Disco Godfather (1979)
Tumblr media
Disco Godfather is the most competent of Rudy Ray Moore’s 1970s films. For anyone else, that would be a selling point. For an actor of dubious talent whose fans mostly like him because his movies are accidentally funny, it's a warning. While this action film has some chuckle-worthy scenes and a few pleasant surprises, it’s overwhelmingly dull.
When Bucky (Julius J. Carry III) gets wacked out on angel dust and hospitalized, his uncle Tucker Williams (Rudy Ray Moore), a retired police detective turned rapper/disco club owner, decides to take down the drug dealers who got his nephew hooked. After repeated, failed attempts to make his way up the chain to the boss behind it all, Williams suspects someone in the department can’t be trusted.
Even before the film begins, there are dark clouds ahead. Did that screen just say "Rated PG"?. Yes, this film was made before the creation of the PG-13 rating but all of Moore’s other films had a lot of cursing and sleazy nudity. You might even say it was a selling point. Of course he isn’t actually playing Dolemite or Petey Wheatstraw (same character, really) but you expect someone called "The Disco Godfather" to be juggling a half-dozen women at least. When you realize he isn't, you brace yourself for the worst.
Moore’s other trademarks are all here. There are plenty of "martial arts" action scenes, each less convincing than the last. The punches and kicks are so slow it couldn’t be more obvious that none of them connect. Even if they did, none would cause anyone any kind of injury. As before, you already have a hard time believing Moore’s character would take down any opponent but director J. Robert Wagoner could’ve tried a little harder!
As for the performances, this is where the movie gets more enjoyable (for the wrong reasons). Take a drink every time you think "this person has to be the worst actor in this movie" and you’ll be dead from alcohol poisoning an hour in. There isn’t a convincing line delivery anywhere, and the wooden reactions are made even worse by the horrendous screenplay. At one point, two thugs attack Tucker in his office. He narrowly fends them off and they run away. From the same corridor comes his secretary, acting as if two bruised and bloodied assassinsrunning past her is the most normal thing she’s seen all day. And of course, Tucker doesn’t call the police or report this. I know what you’re thinking, "It’s because he knows there’s a rat in the precinct" but does he think it’s his former best friend Lt. Frank Hayes (Frank Finn)? How could he when the culprit is the most shifty-eyed, forehead-drenched-with-sweat, crooked-cop-if-I’ve-ever-seen-one ever?
Fans of failed cinema will also enjoy the scenes in which Disco Godfather turns into a wannabe Reefer Madness. While PCP isn’t as "harmless" as marijuana, the recovering addicts are so over-the-top you can’t stop yourself from laughing. The testimonies from the worried parents and former addicts preaching to the at-risk youths can’t be taken seriously. The slogan "Attack the Whack" is too goofy to be effective. It takes all of your willpower not to yell "Wiggedy whack!" whenever someone says something or someone is "whack". You might just explode when you hear it accidentally switched to "Whack the Attack". Then, there’s a so-called testimony from a former victim of angel dust and her speech… is NOTHING! It’s treated as an emotional reflection of a difficult life but it sounds like a placeholder that was meant to be swapped out!
The last enjoyable element of the picture are the psychedellic scenes. The special effects range from bad… to really bad. Some of the drug-induced demons we see make the orcs in Ralph Bakshi’s "The Lord of the Rings" look like the ones in Peter Jackson’s films. It comes out of a nowhere so profound and so surprising your face will be stuck in a permanent confused look.
All of this makes Disco Godfather sound like fun if you like bad movies. It would be if all of the boring bits were edited out and only the wackiest scenes remained. Unfortunately, there is indeed a plot and it's so generic it might as well be the first template you get from a free screenwriting software. The characters are so flat, the overall product so predictable and lackluster that you’ll be bored for about 75% of the running time. You’ll remember Moore’s saying "Put your weight on it!" (I still don’t know what that actually means) but little else about Disco Godfather. (June 25, 2021)

House is a music genre characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and a typical tempo of 120 beats per minute as a re-emergence of 1970's disco. It was created by DJs and music producers from Chicago's underground club culture and evolved slowly in the early/mid 1980s, and as DJs began altering disco songs to give them a more mechanical beat. By early 1988, House became mainstream and supplanted the typical 80s music beat
Tumblr media
House was created and pioneered by DJs and producers in Chicago such as Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Jesse Saunders, Chip E., Joe Smooth, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Marshall Jefferson, Phuture, and others. House music initially expanded internationally, to London, then to other American cities, such as New York City, and ultimately a worldwide phenomenon.
Tumblr media
In its most typical form, the genre is characterized by repetitive 4/4rhythms including bass drums, off-beat hi-hats, snare drums, claps, and/or snaps at a tempo of between 120 and 130 beats per minute (bpm); synthesizerriffs; deep basslines; and often, but not necessarily, sung, spoken or sampled vocals. In house, the bass drum is usually sounded on beats one, two, three, and four, and the snare drum, claps, or other higher-pitched percussion on beats two and four. The drum beats in house music are almost always provided by an electronic drum machine, often a Roland TR-808, TR-909, or a TR-707. Claps, shakers, snare drum, or hi-hat sounds are used to add syncopation. One of the signature rhythm riffs, especially in early Chicago house, is built on the clave pattern. Congas and bongos may be added for an African sound, or metallic percussion for a Latin feel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One book from 2009 states the name "house music" originated from a Chicago club called the Warehouse that was open from 1977 to 1982. Clubbers to the Warehouse were primarily African, gay men, who came to dance to music played by the club's resident DJ, Frankie Knuckles, who fans refer to as the "godfather of house". Frankie began the trend of splicing together different records when he found that the records he had were not long enough to satisfy his audience of dancers. After the Warehouse closed in 1983, eventually the crowds went to Knuckles' new club, The Power House, later to be called The Power Plant, and the club was renamed, yet again, into Music Box with Ron Hardy as the resident DJ. The 1986 documentary, "House Music in Chicago", by filmmaker, Phil Ranstrom, captured opening night at The Power House, and stands as the only film or video to capture a young Frankie Knuckles in this early era, right after his departure from The Warehouse.
In the Channel 4 documentary Pump Up the Volume, Knuckles remarks that the first time he heard the term "house music" was upon seeing "we play house music" on a sign in the window of a bar on Chicago's South Side. One of the people in the car joked, "you know that's the kind of music you play down at the Warehouse!" In self-published statements, South-Side Chicago DJ Leonard "Remix" Rroy claimed he put such a sign in a tavern window because it was where he played music that one might find in one's home; in his case, it referred to his mother's soul and disco records, which he worked into his sets

Chicago House Playlist
Alright, folks, here's something that's been a long time coming: a playlist of house tunes that came from the city that gave birth to the global phenomenon in the first place, and also kickstarted the whole evolution of electronic dance music as we currently know it. When house music began, most dancefloors had moved on from disco to a mishmash of post-disco, boogie, hi-NRG, dance-pop, synthy funk, electro, freestyle, and a whole lot of other stuff, but there was something different that started to brew itself into a movement during the mid-1980s among a predominantly black, gay crowd in the city where disco had first been symbolically murdered in 1979.
And eventually, it became known as house music, named after both The Warehouse, the place that the genre's godfather, Frankie Knuckles, would have residency, and the posters that would be hung up to advertise the venue's events, which referred to 'house parties' and 'house music.' The Warehouse would open up in the late 70s and close in the early 80s, but in 1983, Frankie would open up his own club, The Power House, which would then change its name to the Power Plant, and then change its name again to The Music Box, after another legendary house DJ, Ron Hardy, would take up residency there.
So, a lot of this playlist channels the greatness of some of those halcyon Chicago house days. And so much of it is just pure, primordial dance music bliss; lighthearted, unserious, super fun, revolutionary grooves. There was an amateurishness to a lot of it back then that gave it a significant level of goofy charm, and that's something that seems to have gotten mostly left behind as the music continued to grow into the 90s. Songs like "Move Your Body," by Marshall Jefferson, which opened with this rich and clanging, jauntily unpolished piano rag of sorts, was so infectious, and his plainly bad, but passionate singing voice that would follow that iconic intro couldn't help but be adored too. And the song on this playlist that currently comes after that one, "Love Can't Turn Around," by Farley "Jackmaster" Funk & Jesse Saunders, is in much the same vein, as featured vocalist Darryl Pandy goes over-the-top berserk to start his second verse, making for another song that you really just can't resist 🥰.
Another total favorite of mine on here is one that was produced by Frankie Knuckles himself: "Let the Music Use You," by the Night Writers, which is a near-eight minute masterpiece that has a divine, string-pad-and-bell-laden beat that immediately shows you why Frankie was revered as such a master of his own craft. And that beat gets paired beautifully with Ricky Dillard's soft and tender, heartfelt vocals too.
And then there's Kevin Irving's "Children of the Night," which features his excellent, soulful voice on a beat that combines string pads with prickly electro stabs, and was made by Larry Sherman, the founder of the most important label in the history of Chicago house itself, Trax Records, which has also caught a lot of flak over the years for its shady business practices.
A couple more notes: first, be forewarned that the track that starts this playlist is another tremendous classic, "Mind Games," by Quest— which features the voice of Liz Torres and some great and dreamy freestyle-type synth work—but even though it's on Spotify, it is, unfortunately, pretty damn scratchy. Luckily, I was able to include a much cleaner version on the YouTube version of this playlist, though 😊. And second, I like to keep these playlists as chronologically ordered as possible, but I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out when Screamin' Rachael's "Bip Bop" was actually made. It has an aggressive male rap vocal on it that's reminiscent of Turbo B's on Snap!'s "The Power," so it could be from that early 90s period, but I really don't know. So I just put it at the end, where it will stay until I one day possibly figure out when it was actually created.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
Quest - "Mind Games" Marshall Jefferson - "Move Your Body" Farley "Jackmaster" Funk & Jesse Saunders - "Love Can't Turn Around" On the House - "Pleasure Control" Housemaster Boyz - "House Nation" Ralphi Rosario - "You Used to Hold Me" Night Writers - "Let the Music Use You" Dalis - "Rock Steady" Kevin Irving - "Children of the Night" Bam Bam - "Where's Your Child?" Paul Johnson - "3rd Dimension (Remixed by Armando)" Screamin' Rachael - "Bip Bop"
And while there are some incredible moments in that Spotify playlist, I still have way more Chicago house music to show you in the YouTube version. Some tracks that stand out in this bonus crop are the first one, the silly and campy "Undercover," by Doctor Derelict, which has about 3,500 plays on YouTube across a couple uploads; another one from Frankie Knuckles, which is a rare remix of his very popular "Baby Wants to Ride" that has ~31.6K plays, and features some political opining from vocalist Jamie Principle, and even a detouring interpolation of "America the Beautiful" in its second half (😆); and then one from a later era of Chicago—'99, to be exact—called "Testing & Balancing," by Jimminy Cricket, aka James Curd, that has around 170 plays and liberally samples from Al Green's soul classic, "Love & Happiness."
Doctor Derelict - "Undercover" Jungle Wonz - "The Jungle" Steve "Silk" Hurley - "House Beat Box" On the House - "Ride the Rhythm"Libra Libra - "I Like It" Paris Grey - "Don't Make Me Jack" Liz Torres - "Can't Get Enough" Frankie Knuckles - "Baby Wants to Ride" On the House - "Let's Get Busy" Mister Lee - "Come to House" Jimminy Cricket - "Testing & Balancing"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, with the Spotify version of this playlist, we currently have 12 songs that total an hour and 16 minutes, and with YouTube, we're at 23 songs that total 2 hours and 24 minutes. Clearly, there are a whole lot more goodies in that YouTube one.
And if you want a Chicago house playlist that's a bit shorter, I have one that's made of stuff that's solely from the 80s too.
1980s Chicago House: Spotify / YouTube / YouTube Music
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
Like what you hear? Follow me on Spotify and YouTube for more cool playlists and uploads!

Random Lookism Thoughts that I Get During Class (part 2):
(I REALLY need to pay attention in class more, I stg. My mind goes crazy when it comes to Lookism-related things, but not actual study topics. 🥲 But here you guys go, I hope you’ll enjoy!)
Mary Kim: She’s definitely a top tier Megan Thee Stallion stan (real hot girl shit 🔥). A fan of all of the bad bitch rappers such as Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Saweetie, BIA, Doja Cat, etc. She would listen to their songs while working out with Vin Jin, and Vin Jin doesn’t even mind at all if she blasts it. (He even admitted to Mary that whoever listens to Megan Thee Stallion are real bad bitches, including himself.)
Jace Park: On days when the Burn Knuckles crew decides to just chill in their meet up place at school, Jace would just play the Jeopardy app on his phone whenever he’s bored. He thinks it’s a fun way to kill time while learning about something new at the same time. (That’s where he gets some of his facts whenever the Burn Knuckles crew asks him to tell them something interesting, especially Vasco. He thinks he’s a mad genius.) Also, whenever Jace gets tired of playing Jeopardy, he’d text Mary Kim if she’d be down to play games on the Game Pigeon.
Yenna Jang: Two words. Coco Melon. Eli Jang would pull up Coco Melon from his phone and would let Yenna watch it while he feeds her food or does their laundry. Sometimes, Eli Jang would let her watch Sailor Moon on his phone or Cardcaptor Sakura and he’d watch it with her when he has free time to himself. (That explains the wand toy thing that Yenna had before Eli ruined it in a fight. R.I.P. Yenna’s toy.) Sometimes, Zack Lee would come by with Mira Kim to visit Yenna since Eli had given him permission to see her. In a way, Zack became a second father-figure AND an uncle to Yenna. (Zack is just waiting for Eli to grant him the title of being Yenna’s godfather in the future.)
Jerry Kwon: I just imagine Jerry making a bunch of origami paper cranes and just gifting them to every member in Big Deal for being loyal to Jake Kim. And he’d even try to make a big paper crane out of parchment paper for Jake, and when Jake receives it, he’ll thank Jerry for the cool gift but he doesn’t know where to put it back in his own house.
Lua Im: She’d definitely be Tik Tok famous for sure. With her great fashion sense, wearing trendy Street Fashion brands such as Stüssy, she would get lots of likes and gain lots of followers on Tik Tok doing fashion hauls and OOTD videos. She would also feature Sinu Han, Jake Kim, Jerry Kwon, and some of the Big Deal members into her Tik Tok videos and would try and make them do a Tik Tok challenge with her. But the one who’s always down to collab with her would be Yeonhui, who’d always visit the Big Deal street with Sinu whenever they drop by. And whenever she sees Johan Seong, she’ll try and get him to do a Tik Tok challenge with her and convince him to make a Tik Tok account. (He secretly did, and they’ve been exchanging memes on Tik Tok ever since. Too bad Zack doesn’t know about this.)
Sinu Han: Sinu would be a Panic! At the Disco fan. (Idk man, it just makes sense to me.) He would totally be into the Alternative rock songs of P!ATD because he’d think they’re badass and his favorite song would be House of Memories, as it always reminds him of his irreplaceable memories that he had with Big Deal. (His 2nd favorite would be Death of a Bachelor, and he’d sing it all sultry-like to Yeonhui while they dance together.)
Ryuhei Kuroda: Ryuhei probably used to watch hentai as a hobby to try to get his 🐉 up or whenever he gets bored but it wouldn’t get the job done so he quit. He would rather wait for Mitsuki to do the job one day, than to watch XXX videos that won’t even satisfy him.
Mitsuki: After Sinu Han left the Workers, she would lock herself in her room everyday and listen to soft indie pop artists and alternative artists. For instance, her most-played artists would probably be NIKI, Joji, Mitski (not intentionally…), The Marías, Marina and the Diamonds, Lana Del Rey, The Neighbourhood, Halsey, etc.
Kenta Megami: Everyday, he doesn’t go through a day without having at least one glass of milk. Not just to strengthen up his body, but to possibly grow in height. He wanted to grow at least a bit more before he gets to fight he-who-shall-not-be-named. (He definitely needs some milk after what ⚪️👹 did to him, ong.)
Eugene: On his free time, he’d probably go to a Country Club and would be seen hanging out with Yoosung and Mandeok playing golf or tennis. Or, you could catch him shopping at a Polo Ralph Lauren store with them accompanying him and with extra body guards who are a part of Workers. (And Samuel Seo used to accompany him on his little errands sometimes, but we all know that won’t happen again anytime soon… 🌊)
Warren Chae: Warren would be the type to make fitness videos on YouTube, always updating on his progress to being healthy. He would also try and get Sally to join him in his live workouts on YouTube, by just having her sit on his back while he does push-ups. (He even asked Sr. Manager Kim one day to check out his YouTube channel. Manager Kim wanted to subscribe to Warren’s channel, so he had to ask his daughter Minji to teach him how YouTube works. Eventually, Manager Kim became his number one subscriber.)
Sally Park: We all have a feeling that she’d be converted from typical shoujo romance fan, to Yaoi/BL fan when she witnessed Eli Jang and Jake Kim accidentally kissed right in front of her. She probably keeps a stack of some BL manga underneath her bed somewhere or reads BL webtoons on her phone. (While babysitting Yenna one day, Yenna somehow crawled underneath her bed and when Sally finally found her, she panicked when Yenna was holding one of her special BL manga so she had to hide them somewhere else.)
DG/James Lee: On his own free time, James would want to relax, especially anywhere where Chairman Choi isn’t around. He would probably fly out of the country and take a short vacation out in Maldives, where he can just swim and lay around eating tropical fruits. (Until he has to come back the next day to his hectic k-pop idol life. I told you it was short lol) Update: I won’t be surprised if he’s a polyglot too (a person who can speak many languages). He isn’t called a “genius” for nothing. I feel like he’d be able to understand and speak in languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Tagalog (Including Bisaya and Illocano), Bahasa Indonesia (Including Javanese), Malay, English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, etc. Man’s a legend.
Crystal Choi: As a hobby, she’d definitely go out shopping for new clothes from clothing stores such as Zara, Tiffany&Co, Banana Republic New York, etc. However, she doesn’t mind shopping for expensive brands either. Also, she would probably be a tea enthusiast, as she goes to Teavana at the mall and tries out samples of different teas to bring home. Sometimes whenever she meets up with DG, Gun, Goo, and Kouji, they’d sit around with each other and silently drink on the tea that she’d bring to her office. On days when she’s discussing plans with her father’s business partners for him, once in a while, she would wonder how Daniel Park (og Daniel) is doing and how much he would’ve grown from the last time they met with each other.
Chairman Choi: He seems like the type of businessman who would be good at playing rich-people games, such as chess. As Crystal’s father, he would invite her to play chess with him from time to time and would bring her with him sometimes to his business trips as a way to bond with her. One time, they ended up going to Hawaii together because he had to meet with one of his American business partners for a meeting. Afterwards, he’d find Crystal just chilling on a sunlounger chair out in the beach and he would join her just laying there sipping on their little mimosas while talking about what’s been going on with HNH Group, the 10 Geniuses (Crystal ain’t a snitch), and updates on Daniel Park.
