Mentopolis ep 4! This is another very long one and also this time there's research and visual aids!
Siobhan’s look this ep is so good
I relate to Hank Green in that I also roll a d20 between my fingers and gaze into the middle distance when my GM recounts The Horrors.
You look too pretty and mysterious 😔
Siobhan is so good at playing a femme fatale
Jokes!
Wait do flash mobs really not exist anymore? Did those disappear and I didn’t notice?
Has anyone checked to see how far down Elias is rn.
Like is he gonna be falling for the next three episodes.
I love when there are cousins in rpgs. The Lords of The Wing. Imelda and Anastasia. Every rp server I’ve ever been in. Most of the dnd games I’ve ever been in. If there’s one thing rpers/ttrpgers/etc love it’s fucking complex family dynamics.
I love Max <3
she’s so silly I love her
Ivana x Dan where’s the fic cmon guys
The super casual dance 💃
THANK you please check
(players make cartoonish sounds of worry)
They really want him to fly lmao
The setttttt
WHY DOES HE HAVE A GRAPPLING HOOK ON HIS BELT
Like that’s great. But he has this for why. Did he know he was gonna get tossed out the window??? What the fuck??
I missed it last episode but this episode’s spelling is 🥁🥁
Phởcks!
ở is a Vietnamese language vowel (one of twelve), and is pronounced as an unrounded [o]. Vietnamese is a tonal language, so Ở is the letter Ơ with the hook tonal indicator above it. It does phonetically make sense as a replacement letter for the sound they are trying to achieve. x x Back to the show!
Oh god we’re in the red
140 pressure! By golly gee!
Dan whatcha doin
The fucks of doom
Literally of doom.
Freddie trying to explain what this looks like is so funny oh my god
Why did you need to slap her for that?
ONE
Quadruple oh dear lord
Also why was the grappling gun vibrating
What are you doing kid??
Oh he has no way of knowing that but that could really screw The Fix. I really hope he doesn’t get killed because the DA finds out he’s not dead.
I’ll bet Hank is having such a great time just watching this.
She beat it by more than five hell yeah
Floor rules!!
What a great cover story for being at Sugah’s all the time
Oh, the cops are huge assholes? Shocking.
Especially when Brennan’s the GM lol
Yeah Hank definitely forgot he was playing lmao
HELL YEAH
What is thisssss
Oh I do not like this at all
Everyone is so delighted by him and honestly I am too
Bad this is all bad
Like body like brain function I guess
The Fix should have had a grappling hook on his belt idk what to tell you
Wild. This is a wild thing to have happened.
God the fear that “did you know” instills now.
What. What are you trying to achieve right now.
TRAPP
What are you trying to do
WHY IS THIS WHAT’S HAPPENING
Holy shit man. What the fuck.
So is he like. No longer stressed or something? He’s still swinging from a grappling hook off a skyscraper, is he no longer stressed about that?
The gang is reuniting!
Why is Mrs Doubtfire the default? Like every improv person I’ve ever met defaults to Mrs doubtfire when they need to do a disguise thing.
Split like an end
Just noticed the little thing that looks like the communism symbol on the background lmao
Tumblr media
The Brennan Face of Defeat is beautiful and tragic
We would hate for anyone in police custody not to have a wonderful time 💀
Poor Max
Tropes!
C’est la vieeeeee
Myeh, see!
Vigilance?
Just. Maybe. Hundreds?
An entire crosswalk just saw you shit yourself and despite being thrown out of a window and trying to grappling hook yourself to safety, the public humiliation is your biggest concern right now.
We’re driving to the mayor!
Hunch and Fucks duo of all time
Shit!
What is happeninggg
Okay but if he planned to jump and use the grappling hook then why would none of his brain functions be aware of that?
Getting the white key in the chest of a function takes it over?
“He looked at me with some eyes that did not have him inside them anymore” Jesus Christ that’s not quite on “who do we know who has blood” level but it’s close
What a wonderful flashback.
Maybe this insane situation will change him a bit lol
Freddie mouthing along perfectly <3
Drive STRAIGHT into his walls
Ivana what an icon
Great googly moogly!!
Girl what
What an adorable visual
Mr. Mayor I know we’re confessing to kind of a lot of crimes here BUT-
Is rope burn really the biggest concern
This is why the government never gets anything done
The best thing that could happen WOULD be if everything in the world were to stop you’re so right
You don’t make any sense!
Yeah having the concept of freezing as the head of government would make it really easy for people to puppet that.
I’m with Conrad I have no idea what’s going on
Yessss exactly what Imelda had tried to do earlier
Siblings <3
Ok! So they’re not falling anymore!
To control and regulate 😬
I’m curious 🧐🤨 I do all kinds of crazy things 😋🤪🥸
Trapp is so good
Thank god they got the pressure down or that would have been Bad lmao
They all smell so much like beef oh god
The conscience is not the thing holding you back from experiencing pleasure my guy
Of course you’re the embodiment of justification and you’d love to write a manifesto. Of course.
Dan Fucks is in handcuffs so often
The POWER of that roll oh my god
I want to know this woman’s story
Just fun facts, they’re not scary!
(Hank ebullient he’s meeting his match)
e·bul·lient /iˈbo͝olyənt, iˈbəlyənt/ adjective 1. cheerful and full of energy.
FACT ALERT. BRENNAN BIRD FACT ALERT.
Fact off time
Pasha N. She’s PASSION incredible
I love the cartoony clue logic of this place
Copper!
(getting titillated from the tidbits)
Caption authors I LOVE you
(aroused and astounded) I didn’t know, I didn’t know.
The fact that The Fix didn’t know any of this and this is presumably the first time someone is trading facts with him that he didn’t already know and doing it so excitedly I’m having feelings.
Hunch Curio incredible wingman action
Trapp gets the same brand of candy cigarettes that I do!
Fun fact: candy cigarettes look super realistic if you burn the end and work as props for cosplay sometimes! They also taste like toasted marshmallow :)
Oh god
Is the brother one of the kids from the orphanage? Maybe he was abandoned there and that’s why he stayed a kid while his sister grew up?
Oh my god Hank eating the candy cigarette was such a good beat
ICHABOD
Hank Green your mind <3
The gang’s back together!
Sometimes Brennan walks into a bad pun and he looks so disappointed in himself
That man needs some beef on his legs!
What a great episode.
Capers!
Sneak peek reactions:
Leave the child alone
Ooh do we get to meet Don Avaricii?
Whatttt
Oohohohoho yay.

@sunguns asked: Spill the tea. I am specifically requesting tea about your DnD characters.
Send “Spill the Tea-” for the Mun to ramble about what ever is currently on their mind be it positive or negative. // accepting !!
Tumblr media
I already rambled about Druze in the last post, so here's an unhinged rambling about my other character. ;w;
In our on-going campaign ( which is on a mini-hiatus for PLOT REASONS ) my character left the party quite a while back. Catiana Freespark started out as a swashbuckler rogue in ever sense of the word. I built such...a broken... rogue. I wanted to make a suave, charming type of rogue so charisma is like her highest stat which is just back-asswards for a rogue. But our party was full of first time players, so I really wanted to make sure I had a character that gave opportunity for others to have the spotlight.
She started out as a pirate searching for her ship and her family, and wound up making friends with a Triton, a Tabaxi, a Warforged, and a Tiefling.
The story seemed pretty straightforward, until a literal sea goddess decided to fuck with us, drop a vague hint about my character's mother ( who she doesn't know & who abandoned her, ) we fucked with the cult of another god, and yet a third god started talking to my character in her dreams ( hey Procan what's good? )
Drama! Excitement! DEATH. Yeah. She died. I was devastated when it happened, because... she was the first D&D character I really got attached to, and her story was so far from finished. So, imagine my surprise when she gets a Deus Ex Machina and gets. resurrected. by the God who has been talking to her.
After all of that, Cat decided to leave the party in order to try and get her head in order. I can't wait to see the surprise of the rest of the party when she returns, having taken two levels in cleric while she's been gone.

Rarepair headcanons because I am ignoring my problems
Serodeku:
Izuku reenacts the Spider-Man movies with Sero. Izuku is MJ. They also alternate being Spider-Man sometimes
They skate together
They get very protective when people call their boyfriend “plain”
They play dnd together
Sero tries to make sure that izuku gets some rest
They’re both kinda insecure, izuku more than sero, but still; and they make sure to reassure each other as often as possible
Sero likes listening to Izuku’s ramblings and finds them cute. He has told izuku this, only for the poor boy to imitate a tomato
After Izuku has been particularly reckless, Sero takes advantage of his quirk, wraps Izuku in bubble wrap, and tapes it there
Tokodeku:
Jocknerd bf and goth bf, we love to see it
Tokoyami teaches izuku how to sword fight
They start a dnd club at U.A.
Izuku talks to dark shadow a lot, Dark Shadow approves of him, and has claimed the spot of best man at their wedding
Izuku comes up with ideas to help Tokoyami gain control with Dark Shadow
Dark Shadow is very protective over Izuku, no matter how many times Tokoyami tells him that he can take care of himself, Dark Shadow will put himself between Izuku and any form of danger as often as possible
Dekoyama??? Aoyama/izuku:
Aoyama gives him makeovers, obviously
Aoyama drags izuku to the mall and tries to revamp some of his wardrobe, but he actually finds the “pants” and “flannel” type shirts cute
They help each other train their quirks
Aoyama is trilingual, and teaching izuku English and French.
Izuku always brings Aoyama home some new cheese
Y’all, I love them so much. There needs to be more aodeku content
Monoshinsou:
They have people watching dates. They come up with stories for the people they’re watching; their job, family, background, etc.
They judge people together
They call each other “love”
They’re both dramatic bastards, who will flop onto their lovers lap and proclaim their death due to a minor inconvenience
They jokingly sh*t-talk class A
Shinsou said “I love you” first, and it was because Monoma brought him coffee to class
Monoyama:
Like monoshinsou, they’re both dramatic bastards, who will flop onto their lovers lap and proclaim their death due to a minor inconvenience
They go shopping together and pick out the most dramatic pieces of clothing for each other
I love them so much, please 😭✋
They have tea parties every week, where they sh*t talk everyone else and gossip
They are both fancy bastards, and they wear the most exquisite outfits to go grocery shopping, and the outshine everyone
They both actually make clothing, they’ll go fabric shopping together. Gift exchanges are often articles of clothing that they’ve made for each other
Momomei:
They work on gear together!!!
Momo makes sure that mei gets some sleep
Mei helps redesign momo’s suit
They often work together with izuku to work in gear and such
They actually got together after izuku introduced them. He had been working on gear with mei, and studying with momo and he thought they’d hit it off. He was correct
Shintsuyu:
Dude they’d be so cute
Tsu is a vent gremlin, and you can’t change my mind. So she and shinsou will play a game where they try to find each other. Tsu is in the vent and shinsou is in the classrooms. Shinsou will try to find whichever vent she’s in, or she’ll find whichever classroom he’s in, in 20 minutes or less
I always headcanoned tsu as a dog person, so they’d have two cats and two dogs, and a bunny that they named Deku
They like comparing their friends to animals, hence the bunny, Deku
Kamideku:
Kaminari is a flirt, and izuku does n o t know how to handle it
Kaminari likes listening to izuku’s ramblings, and can keep up with them. He’ll ask questions on things too, and Izuku has never felt more appreciated
I don’t know why I feel like they’d have so many animals, but I do. They’d have so many, man. Three cats, two dogs, four sugar gliders, a hamster
Adhd power couple. They hyperfixated on complimentary things at the same time one time
Kaminari tutors izuku in English, and izuku turots kami in some other subjects. He’s also teaching kami JSL on the side. Kaminari has a live of languages
Momochako:
Study dates, Momo asks ochako to quiz her a lot
Ochako takes to floating momo’s things when she wants attention. Especially when Momo is studying. She makes a game out of how many things she can float until the other girl notices
Uraraka’s confidence does wonders for momo’s. Uraraka always makes sure to reassure momo that she is strong and that she can do this
Momo makes Uraraka whatever her heart desires. Uraraka blushes all the time, and momo takes great pride in getting her girlfriend to blush
Minatoru:
Mina clings to everyone, but especially to toru
They give each other stuffed animals so often. They’ll go to the store to get food, and come back with three stuffed animals that reminded them of each other
Please, they’re so cute 😭✋
They will play hide and seek, I stand by this.
Mina helps toru design a new costume. I hate hers, it’s horrible, and sexist, and not suitable for a fucking child
Toru says that pink is her favorite color
They flirt with each other all the time. Half the class thinks it’s cute, half of them used to think it was cute.
Iidamomo:
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, but study dates. they quiz each other, and it actually gets pretty competitive
They also have rage room dates. I will not budge on this. Iida tried to murder someone, and I am excited to see momo finally snap. She deserves it
They alternate paying for dates, don’t try me.
The go hiking a lot
They started liking each other after one late night, both having nightmares. Momo had tea, and offered some to Iida. They talked until the early hours of the morning
They can’t flirt. They try. But they’re horrible at it. They’ll compliment each other all day long, but they cannot flirt.
KIRIDEKU, MY BELOVED:
Y’all,,, y’all, I love them so much
They train together, obviously
They ran into each other one night in the common room after both having nightmares. They talked about middle school, how they were both bullied, izuku’s quirk coming in late, katsuki being abusive, kiri being bullied because his quirk wasn’t “cool.” After that, they were practically inseparable.
They started going on dates, not that either of them knew they were dates. The entire class knew, so did the teachers, so did the rest of U.A. Kirishima picked up on it first after a comment from Mina, he had is realization.
So, he started courting Izuku. Not thag izuku realized this. He brought him flowers on most ‘dates,’ he bought him hero action figures whenever he could, he complimented him until Izuku was red in the face (which was honestly very easy.) Still, izuku remained ignorant to the fact that he was indeed dating Kirishima.
The final tipping point, was due to Uraraka’s help. She was quite tired of watching the two of them pine for each other. It was amusing for the first couple months, watching Kirishima try so hard, and Deku being totally oblivious. However, she took pity on her friends after a while.
So, Uraraka devised a devilish plan to get the two together. She involved Mina, Sero, and kaminari in this plan. What was the plan, you ask? Oh, simply to trap the two in one room until they broke through izuku’s obliviousness.
Kirishima finally “straight” up admitted his feelings, to which Izuku had the sudden realization of “oh my gods, have we been dating this whole time??” Yes, Izuku. Yes you have.
They have two anniversaries after that.
Let’s be honest, they are really, annoyingly, horrifically lovey dovey. Kirishima brags about having “the manliest and bestest boyfriend in the world.” Izuku flaunts his many PowerPoint presentations on how talented and incredible Kirishima is
Uraraka doesn’t know if she did the right thing by helping them. She is so tired
Tsujirou:
Jirou makes playlists for tsu
The few sane ones in class A, I swear
They go on walks in the rain as often as they can
They go for dates in the bookstore too. They each pick out an album and a book for the other to listen to and read
Y’all, they make so much sense togetherrrrr, I’m love them 🥺
Jirou started liking tsu after the crew saved bakugou. Jirou sat with tsu after momo, Iida, kirishima, Todoroki, and izuku apologized and sat with her. They had movie night, and Jirou joined the Bakugou saving crew and tsu with taking well into the night. She just appreciated how much tsu cared
Tsu started liking Jirou after she helped Iida, momo, and izuku try to keep the class in order. She appreciated how diplomatic and calm she was
Jirou would talk to izuku all night long about how gay she was, and how adorable tsu was. So, izuku decided to try and suggest ways for Jirou to ask her out.
She did not end up getting to ask her out though, as Tsu walked up to her the next morning f and asked if she wanted to go on a date. Jirou said yes. Izuku cried
Izujirou:
They make playlists for each other
They go for runs on the beach a lot
They both have insomnia, and often spend time making blanket forts and talking, or FaceTiming and listening to music
Jirou walks into the common room once a week looking for new music. She started liking Izuku after he made a playlist for her for one of these occasions.
They’re both quite awkward when it comes to romance, but neither of them will shy away from facing the truth. So, Jirou made izuku a playlist filled with love songs that reminded her of him and sent it to him. Sadly, izuku is dense as hell.
So, then Jirou wrote a love song and told izuku that the song was for him. Sadly, izuku is dense as hell.
So, then Jirou write analysis about izuku’s quirk for him. Sadly, izuku is dense as hell
So, then, after thinking that Jirou had done so much for him, izuku made her a playlist filled with love songs. Jirou took this to mean that izuku had finally picked up on her feelings, and accepted them.
So, they started to go on dates. Not that izuku knew this, as he is dense as hell. All leading up to izuku finally confessing his feelings on one of their ‘dates,’ to which Jirou responded, “dude, we’re already dating? Aren’t we? I- I thought that was obvious??”
May this awkward couple be forever blessed
Tokoyama:
Goth/prep boyfriends, we love to see it
At least once a day, Aoyama will proclaim that Tokoyami “shines almost as bright as he does, in his fabulous emo way”
They sword fight, and come up with really dramatic scenarios and scenes that they’re in
They bond over being in the izucrew and their shared love of swords. Aoyama took fencing classes in middle school, and Tokoyami got into sword fighting after watching it in pirates of the Caribbean as a young child. He is self taught and watched countless videos on the art of sword fighting
Tokoyami asked Aoyama our by dramatically presenting him with a dagger and going “will you accompany me on a formal outing as my lover?”
Shinyama:
They flirt constantly
No really, it’s getting quite annoying. Someone please stop them.
They both plop down in random areas and proclaim their deaths, the difference between them, is that Aoyama will burst into shinsou’s room, and yell “love, I’ve been murdered. Mourn for me” while plopping down on shinsou’s lap. Shinsou can be found laying face down outside aoyama’s door, and when Aoyama goes to open the door, he just goes “I’ve been murdered.”
^^ one time, shinsou did a very fun Halloween prank for this, where he poured fake blood all over himself for Aoyama to find him an hour later, asleep.
Nap dates. Aoyama get glitter all over shinsou’s room
Iiyama:
Aoyama enjoys making Iida blush, obviously. But he takes joy in doing it specifically when class is about to start. Aizawa is tired of his shit
Here is how I think an iiyama conversation might go:
Aoyama: I ask for one thing in this relationship-
Iida: Aoyama, you know that’s a lie-
Aoyama: for my boyfriend to carry me around all day-
Iida: Aoyama, I cannot feasibly do this with class-
Aoyama: and I don’t think that’s too much to ask for 😤
Anyway, Aoyama got carried around all day that day, despite Iida’s blush and Aizawa’s eye twitch
Everyone in the izucrew is close, but Iida and Aoyama started to get close after Iida told the crew about Stain. Aoyama wanted Iida to know that he wasn’t alone, and that he wanted to help him. So he started packing extra cheese for lunch and giving it to Iida. Iida was very confused at first. But this was Aoyama trying to court him. This was only made apparent by momo and Jirou telling Iida that this was aoyama’s attempt at expressing romantic interest.
Aoyama flirts with everyone, that’s just who he is. But with Iida? Oh it was tenfold. The poor boy was red in the face constantly. Aoyama was a persistent little bugger too, following him around and calling him ‘mon amour’
Kirikamideku:
My dearest traffic light trio, I’m love them
They train together, and kiri and kami always appreciate izuku’s analysis snd ideas
Kiri falls even more in love with izuku and kaminari when they go off on rants. Izuku rants and kami can keep up with him so he asks questions about it. Kiri loves to watch his boyfriends go on rants, I don’t make the rules, but I do enforce them
They started to get closer after kami and kiri found bakugou causing a ptsd flashback (could be on purpose of an accident, up to the reader.) they stated with him and tried to talk him through it. After this, izuku started to tell them about having been a “late bloomer” and being bullied, etc. (I don’t know, man; I tend to over share after flashbacks and after panic attacks)
Izuku tutors them in several subjects, but kami tutors them in English. Kiri just falls in love with his smart boyfriends
Izuku is teaching kami JSL and kami is helping izuku with English and Italian (personal headcanon that Italian has been one of kami’s special interests) kiri loves to listen to them, and finds it relaxing and calming to hear them do this. When he has panic attacks, he’ll ask them to tutor each other in different languages

Continuation of this post for my Out-of-Character (or maybe better said as unexpected) DnD classes for the Hermits because I’ve come up with everyone else
Like Scar, most give Cub some form of magic to do with the Vex, making him a wizard or a sorcerer. However Cub is a sneaky businessman so I propose to you: Cub as a rogue that uses tricks and gadgets to fake having magic
It would make sense to give Cleo some form of magical alignment to explain her rising from the dead, probably a necromancer gone wrong or something. But I’ve been watching her play a lot of Fallout and Cleo with a gun makes my sapphic heart happy, so I’ve decided that she will be a fighter with the subclass of gunslinger
So initially I jumped on the idea of TFC as essentially an artificer dwarf, especially with a magical mechanical prosthetic leg. However I love the wise-old-man stereotype and after years of adventuring he’s probably a seasoned fighter and disciplined warrior. So how about TFC as a monk, probably following either the Way of Mercy or the Way of Tranquility? Bonus if he acts as a mentor of sorts to Bdubs the younger monk as well
Beef as a melee class? As something muscular and powerful to make sense of the blood on his clothes? Nah, lets make Beef a bard who builds and sells his own magical infused instruments and discs and can entangle spells in the stories he tells
Mumbo is most obviously an artificer because of all the redstone stuff. But Mumbo irl is actually pretty built, very tall, and was pretty decent at archery and axe throwing, so how funny would it be if he was a brawling fighter?
Taking inspiration from other AUs, I bet Jevin’s squishy slime body would be very good at squeezing into tight spaces and sneaking into places he shouldn’t be. Of course Jevin being a neon blue slime doesn’t exactly help him with the whole rogue thing and going unnoticed but he somehow makes do
Tango is also quite good at redstone so again artificer is too obvious. But I headcanon him as a nether being, so why don’t we assume that nether beings have inherent magical abilities like dragonborn and that he uses magic to enhance his redstone, so that way he’s a sorcerer?
Similar to Tango, I think I want to give Impulse some magic. But he needed to practice to break bedrock and learn how to do it, plus I want him to be a foil to Tango’s naturally-achieved magic. Therefore I dub Impulse as a wizard
And how iconic is it if Zedaph of all people is the tough af melee member of the Team ZIT? If he’s the muscle? I love the idea that he is sworn loyalty to his friends and he wants them to achieve greatness and that’s his driving force (plus we stan Team ZIT in this house) so how about him as a paladin who’s taken the Oath of Glory?
Admittedly I don’t watch a whole lot of Hypno, so I was initially lost on him, but I have an idea. However I have been watching the past few episodes of him breeding the villagers to get better and better arrows, which is vaguely dark and horrifying when you think about it. So anyone for warlock Hypno whose staple move is charming/feebleminding/causing hallucinations (basically hypnotizing) people?
I definitely want Xisuma as something magical and powerful, but I feel like warlock or wizard is too stereotypical. We are talking about the appointed gardener of the shopping district, and he is the man who changes his skin to match an animals every season. I feel like druid is a good fit then
Keralis is definitely a tricky one, but he really loves his friends. He just seems like the type of man that would do anything to protect them, and I mean anything. How cursed is it then if Keralis is the world’s friendliest, most loving barbarian who would throw himself into any fight to protect the other Hermits?
Mr. xB 1) loves his dog quite a lot, 2) likes to build away from everyone else and prefers to be alone in nature over people, and 3) seems to take a distant, support role in most conflicts. Therefore xB is going to be a ranger. Basic? Yes. Fitting? Also yes.
Listen am I tempted to make this sneaky ninja man rogue or a samurai fighter? Obviously yes. Am I instead going to take inspiration from Critical Role and make Etho a cleric of the trickster domain because I think Etho as a cleric that hates/refuses to heal people and who worships his god by playing pranks and lying to people is hilarious? Also yes.
Finally we have Iskall, also someone who would fit most obviously a melee class due to his “hitman”/ “Iskallman” personas. But we are talking about the man who cheated death by winning demise. Therefore I propose Iskall as a Wizard from the School of Necromancy who is actually quite nice considering how sinister his powers may seem
TL;DR here’s a summary of everyone’s classes I’ve assigned in this AU
(If you don’t look at this list and go “wtf” at least once I did it wrong)
Artificer: Stress (Alchemist)
Barbarian: Grian and Keralis
Bard: Wels and Beef
Blood Hunter: False
Cleric: Scar and Etho (Trickster Domain)
Druid: Doc and Xisuma
Fighter: Cleo (gunslinger) and Mumbo
Monk: Bdubs and TFC (Way of Mercy or Way of Tranquility)
Paladin: Zedaph (Oath of Glory)
Ranger: Joe and xB
Rogue: Cub and Jevin
Sorcerer: Tango
Warlock: Ren and Hypno
Wizard: Impulse and Iskall (School of Necromancy)

I’ve been thinking about various aspects of SPoP, as I am wont to do, and as often happens, I’ve settled on trying to figure out why I feel a certain way. Namely regarding why I, personally, am able to feel so much more compassion towards Hordak rather than towards the Princesses. After all, the Princesses are the ones being wronged throughout this show, aren’t they? Their lands are being invaded. They’re the ones having to fight to maintain their way of life. They’re losing ground because of Hordak’s war.
So... why do I find it hard to care about them? Why are their experiences in this conflict just sort of... well, meaningless to me?
And why, instead, do my tender emotional responses strongly favor Hordak, despite his serious role in starting a terrible war?
Well! As per usual, I’m going to try to talk my way through it.
(and, as per usual, your mileage may vary!)
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the Princesses. They range from children to young adults. Seem like reasonably nice girls, despite various flaws. They clearly did not ask for a war, had no hand in starting it, and are clearly on the side of good, seeking to protect innocents and simply return to a peaceful way of life.
They appear perfectly designed to garner sympathy and connection... yet I feel so little for them. I feel little because, despite the show telling me that they’re fighting for their lives, and for their home, despite them being the apparent underdogs in their battle against the Horde, I feel like their lives remain relatively stable. Pleasant. Even enjoyable.
Essentially, I feel like despite everything, they do not truly suffer. Not in a way that is consistent or touching.
The arcs the Princesses go through either deal largely with matters unrelated to the war and subsequently involve less arduous difficulties, or are handled in such a way that any real pain is quickly resolved and loses its impact.
Tumblr media
Frosta and Perfuma represent the former. Both are parentless rulers of their kingdoms, but there is no real confirmation that their parents were killed by the Horde, and they themselves seem largely unperturbed by parental loss. They maintain control of their kingdoms throughout the series. Frosta never loses the Kingdom of Snows, while Perfuma, though in brief danger of losing Plumeria due to damage to the Heart Blossom, ends up... well, defeating the Horde with a band of untrained hippies. So while they fight in the war against Hordak, they never really suffer any significant, confirmed personal losses because of it.
In fact, the Plumerian conflict is... kind of played for laughs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other aspects of their arcs have largely to do with friendship matters, or self-belief, and are also dealt with quickly and with little fanfare. Frosta learns how to make friends. Perfuma learns how to play with cacti. Afterwards, Frosta spends the remainder of the story essentially being a violence-happy little kid; amusing, yes, but not particularly tugging at my heartstrings. Perfuma likewise settles into “sympathetic friend” and, though she’s involved in Scorpia’s story at the end, also does little to invoke any sort of significant emotion.
we’re just going to skirt around the whole “leashing Entrapta” thing, as it’s not relevant to this discussion
(Spinnerella and Netossa barely even register to me, given their very bare-bones roles in the first four seasons and standard “chipped loved one” narrative (that everyone experiences) in the fifth.)
So, let’s move on to Glimmer and Mermista.
Tumblr media
Glimmer and Mermista are arguably the two Princesses who actually lose unique things in the war and suffer because of those losses. And yet, because of the way the show is written, even their pain is dulled in such a way that it just does not facilitate me forming any sort of consistent, compassionate bond with them.
Tumblr media
Mermista is the only Princess to actually lose a kingdom. In Hordak’s most visible evil act, Salineas is burned and beflagged, leading to Mermista deeply mourning the loss of her home, her culture, her peop- oh. Hm.
Tumblr media
She takes it oddly well, doesn’t she? Apparently, ice cream in a bathtub is how deposed rulers deal with the loss of their entire country nowadays.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And once she’s done with her moment of moping, she’s back in the fight, fueled by Sea Hawk’s shenanigans and her own power ballad (and Bright Moon’s lack of ice cream). There is no extended mourning for her people, no real depth to the loss she has supposedly suffered. There’s not even a real sense of it: we never see the people of Salineas, never know them, never get to feel anything for them. And with them being all but theoretical, the show appears to have no issue quickly forgetting them: Mermista never negotiates on their behalf, or visits refugees, or... anything. She might use Salineas in her future battle cries and as an excuse for increased recklessness, but that homage is the extent of emotion that we see.
Kingdom gone, bathtub ice cream finished, she goes on living life as if little has happened. And, because of her royal connections, she doesn’t even experience a decrease in quality of life: she continues to live in luxurious comfort despite an apparently raging war.
Because of how the writing handles Salineas, and her character in general, I never feel connected to how Mermista feels. Whatever pain she experiences is there and gone in a few scenes, quickly dealt with so the story can continue. There is no exploration, no nuance, nothing to really make me appreciate any sort of depth to her experience. And so I feel little, if anything, for her plight.
Glimmer, then, is the last chance the show has to make me feel something for the Alliance Princesses’ suffering during this war, and while season four nearly does it, the series again ends up falling short.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glimmer loses her mother. The actual sacrifice is emotional... though that emotion, admittedly, comes mainly from Adora. Glimmer’s pain comes through at the beginning of season four, when she is clearly in mourning all while needing to take Angella’s place as queen. Afterwards, season four does a fairly good job of making the loss meaningful: Glimmer becomes more and more willing to commit dark acts due to a mixture of grief and desperation. It works well, and out of all of the Princesses, I feel for her the most... until season five comes along and pretty much erases Angella from character consciousness.
Tumblr media
Angella’s death essentially plays no role in season five. Glimmer does not appear to think back to it. While it drives her actions during season four, it appears to have been all but forgotten now, a particularly glaring shift when Catra, the one who is practically responsible, joins the group without it coming up at all. Glimmer’s other parental loss, Micah, likewise becomes meaningless not because of questionable writing choices, but because he simply never died.
Glimmer’s other problem, her rift with Bow and Adora, is repaired within an episode and never spoken of again. That... falls quite flat for me.
And so, by the end of the series, Glimmer fails to maintain a believable level of distress and thus doesn’t invoke any real emotion in me. The one thing that really mattered, that really hurt her? Suddenly irrelevant in the name of Catra’s redemption. Hm.
Tumblr media
And while these are the specific character examples that come to mind, the general situation the Princesses find themselves also fails to carry much weight in my mind. They are in the middle of a war, yet they continue to live in luxury. Skirmishes carry a sense of light-heartedness and sometimes seem almost fun. Battle plans are developed via a game of DnD. There is just no consistent sense of urgency or severity, no believable sense of emotional depth to convey to me that these characters are in truly dire straits. Yes, there are moments... but these moments are so brief, and carry such questionable lasting impact, that they don’t connect with me the way that they should. And as a result, the plight of the Princesses just feels hollow to me.
I just... I just find myself unable to care about them because, when all is said and done, I don’t feel like they are truly in danger of real harm, or that they are realistically affected by their losses. It all just feels so shallow to me.
Now, let’s pivot and look at Hordak. Hordak, whom I still cry over on the daily. Hordak, who has owned my heart for over a year now. Hordak, who invokes in me all of the emotions.
Tumblr media
What is the difference between Hordak and the Princesses, other than the glaring fact that he is the instigator of the Etherian war and thus a bad, bad man? What makes him snap my heartstrings in half, while the Princesses barely manage a gentle tug?
Tumblr media
The answer is that Hordak legitimately suffers. Terribly. Consistently. Throughout the entire series. While the Princesses experience brief moments of distress that the show quickly sweeps under the rug in favor of witty banter and friendship problems, Hordak is the direct opposite: he experiences only the occasional breath of happiness while otherwise drowning in a constant sea of bitterness, fear, pain, and deep unhappiness.
From the moment we meet him, Hordak is stern and humorless and angry, and while this initially appears to be a side effect of him being a Standard Ultimate Villain Who Never Smiles, we quickly learn that it is due to his struggle. Hordak is constantly struggling against his physical defect, battling an illness that causes him not only significant health problems, but incredible shame. He is likewise constantly struggling to earn the respect and validation and nonexistent love of his god-brother. His sour demeanor, with all of its anger and dourness, originates in the fact that, throughout the overwhelming majority of the series, he is gravely unhappy. He is in ever-present distress, both physical and emotional.
Tumblr media
And as the series goes on, does that distress lessen? No. No, instead, he is rejected by his brother, thoroughly humiliated, and brutally “reset” back into his life as an actual cult slave. Rather than having his difficulties minimized like so many Princesses do, he finds himself in ever-worsening circumstances, graduating from (supposed) “disgraced, disabled military veteran” to “enslaved cultist desperate to be loved by his loveless master.”
Any moments of happiness are not only relatively brief, they are taken away as quickly as the Princesses’ moments of difficulty are. Hordak experiences love and friendship for the first time with Entrapta, only to swiftly lose her to Catra’s lies and spiraling madness. He finally begins to win the Etherian War (which is bad, yes, I know), only to realize that his victories stem from Catra’s betrayal before the whole affair culminates in Prime’s nauseating violation of his personhood.
It does not stop. Physically, mentally, or emotionally: not until his triumph over Prime in the season five finale does Hordak stop hurting, and even that is marred by Prime taking control of his body in a final act of nightmarish control before, bless him, Hordak is freed and able to begin his recovery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to being a series constant, Hordak’s pain is conveyed. It is dramatically shown through facial expressions, through body language, through phenomenal voice work, through scenes that clearly depict real anguish.
The purification ritual is one of them; what other character do we hear scream like that, over and over, due to such terrible agony? His reunion with Prime is another; I will never forget how deeply I could sense his fear, how watching him tremble and beg instilled within me a sort of breathless panic because the scene actually made me want to instinctively protect him... but I could not because, y’know: cartoon.
Tumblr media
Hordak’s suffering is not only ever-present, it is varied and developed and communicated to the viewer in ways that result in it making a lasting impression. It is never minimized. It is never ignored. It is painful and horrifying with little reprieve, and it has a deep, life-altering effect on him.
That, friends and neighbors, is why I think I find myself feeling so much more compassion towards Hordak than I do towards the Princesses, despite his less-enticing place on the moral spectrum. Hordak is in pain. Consistently, meaningfully. He suffers, and the story takes it with every ounce of seriousness it can muster.
The Princesses, on the other hand, either experience little hurt or, when they do suffer, do so briefly before the narrative shoves it aside in favor of Catradora other things. As a result, they fail to make the same impression. They fail to garner my compassion because, in the end, they just don’t seem to really need it.
Whereas Hordak does.

Words: 3k
nothing says summer like spending hours upon hours in a car together. at least nothing’s boring with jeonghan
day 6 of a tct summer collection
(my masterlist)
Tumblr media
There’s something about road trips, intoxicating and refreshing and energizing and addicting. There’s something about the ideal of cruising down the highway as the scenery flashes past quicker than you can see, rolling over the hills and saying hello to the horizon at the peaks.
And so what if the RV is old and can’t quite hold at 65 mph on any incline above 20 degrees, and so what if there are two beds and an air mattress for the five of you to split, and so what if Jeonghan blew half his meal budget on cheez its and peanut butter and Mingyu bought more noodles and meat and ingredients than you can fit in the cabinets for meals you probably can’t make on the RV stove, and Minghao brought wine and ritz crackers and Chan showed up with eight pounds of candy and about as much instant ramen, and so what if you almost ran out of gas in the dead space between towns and every time you turn things fall off shelves and counters and leave those in the back scrambling to make sure nothing breaks? Road trips are about the adventure (“Shut up, Jeonghan, they are!”) and a trip without complications is just driving next to cows, and what’s so special about that?
Jeonghan’s limbs had reportedly started to atrophy behind the wheel (“I’m petrifying into a tree, we have to switch out!”), so he’d pulled into a rest stop to allow time for everyone to stretch their legs in a way that wasn’t probably illegal. This particular rest stop, you notice, has several dinosaur statues lined up by the picnic tables, and there’s only one other group there, a rowdy family ferrying food to and from a camper parked nearby.
The younger three, naturally, gravitate directly for the dinosaurs, yelling, “Chan, it’s Chan!” (with the exception of Chan himself, who seemed split between joining the joke or pretending he didn’t know them). Mingyu swings himself onto the tallest of the brontosauri with infuriating ease.
“It’s not fair,” you complain, struggling to climb on while using the baby stegosaurus statue as a step. “He should be struggling the most! He doesn’t know how to use those limbs!”
Mingyu sticks his tongue out at you, scooting away. “Yes I do!”
“He’d make a good gas station balloon,” Minghao notes, a slight smirk on his face. Mingyu flips around to make a face at him too, but Minghao just raises the camera hanging around his neck and snaps a picture, his smile only growing.
Jeonghan eventually steps in and supports your foot so you can crawl onto the dinosaur’s back. By the time you pull him up behind you, the other three have finished with the brontosaurus and wandered over to the T-Rex.
“I can’t believe it, he’s not even going to take a picture.” You click your tongue. “What do we keep that kid around for?”
“Wine, mostly,” Jeonghan says.
You sigh. “He does have pretty good taste.” You take out your phone. “Well, who needs him anyway?”
It takes a little bit of maneuvering to get the dinosaur’s face in with both of yours. The sculptor made the dino’s face just a touch too tall for an easy photo op, but you manage. Jeonghan’s breath is hot on your neck as he presses against you, and you pretend it isn’t making your hair stand up.
And then the picture is taken and he slides off the side of the dinosaur, heading over to the T-Rex.
You stay on the brontosaurus for a moment, watching him laugh at Mingyu trying to lift Chan onto the dinosaur’s shoulders (his whole face lights up and his head goes back; he never laughs long but you can’t look away).
Then you go inside.
He comes up next to you while you’re watching the screen with the weather forecast, tracking the green blob of the storm swirling over the roads.
“What’s the verdict?” he asks.
“We’re gonna be driving into it,” you say, surveying it. “From what I can tell, it’s just rain, so we should be fine.”
“Should?”
You shrug. “If I say anything definitive I’m going to jinx it.” You keep your eyes on the map. “If it gets too bad we can find a spot to pull off the highway and wait for it to blow over.”
“We can’t just wait it out?”
“We’re running late as it is, I don’t know if we have that kind of time. Jihoon’s gonna be ticked if we don’t show and I refuse to get on his bad side.”
“Aw, he’s all talk.”
“I’ve heard Mingyu bring up the story of his guitar more times than I can count, I’d rather not get my own the first time I meet him in person.”
He snickers, and you glace to the side to see him looking at you. You turn your gaze back to the forecast and pretend your heartbeat is normal.
“Well, if he tries anything I’ll tell him the story of my old friends who crashed and died driving in a rainstorm,” Jeonghan says.
“You had friends who died?”
“Nope,” he says cheerfully, “but Jihoon can’t prove that.” He leans his head on your shoulder. “And I’d rather my answer not change because of some rainstorm, okay?”
“No worries,” you say, reaching over to run your fingers through his hair. “Quick but careful, that’s my motto. Nobody’s dying on this road trip.”
Death is not a good road trip adventure.
The clouds break as you follow the highway across the wide flat ranching fields. In seconds, the curvature of the earth’s horizon is masked by a curtain of rain. You flick on the headlights and slow down, sitting farther up in your seat as though that will let you see into the distance.
“Lucky this isn’t road trip season,” you say. You haven’t seen another car on the road for at least an hour.
“Yeah,” he echoes. “Lucky.”
His face is barely reflected in the window, distorting with each sweep of the wipers. You chance a glance. His knuckles are white on the armrest as he stares out the windshield.
“This is nothing,” you say. “It’s a baby storm. Did I ever tell you about the time I delivered pizzas during a hurricane?”
“Did they give you hazard pay?”
“Only like two bucks. Can you believe it?” You click your tongue. “Fuck Pizza Hut, am I right?”
He huffs something like a laugh, so you keep going. “Got a twenty dollar tip from this one guy who looked like he was in the middle of an intense dnd game, and I mean intense. Either that or it was a Lord of the Rings marathon, man looked like Gandalf.”
“But was it a good Gandalf?”
“I mean, I was convinced.”
“That’s not saying much, you were convinced by that kid in a hulk mask too.”
You gasp in mock outrage. “If I weren’t driving I’d smack you,” you threaten. “And he had the hands and bodysuit, too, he was the real deal! You couldn’t tell either!”
He actually snickers, but doesn’t argue. You’d both fought over the privilege of handing candy to the child, that last fall.
“And anyway, that wasn’t even the weirdest delivery I made that night.”
“I guess that makes sense, only the crazies call for a pizza in a hurricane.” His reflection in the window smiles, and even though you’re driving you dare to chance a glance; his face is lit up with a smile, his hand relaxed on the armrest. “Who was the weirdest?”
“Weird but wholesome, it was this older gentleman who spent like three minutes searching his wallet, I mean thank god he had a covered porch or I would’ve gotten even more soaked. His wife gave me these plums for a tip; I looked them up and it turns out they’re actually illegal, it was wild.”
He clicks his tongue. “You got tipped in illegal plums and you didn’t even share them with me?”
“This was before I met you guys. Those plums were long gone by the time I was in a spot to share them with you.” The pounding rain has died down enough that you feel confident enough to peel your hand away from the wheel to pat his thigh. “Don’t worry, if I get tipped in any other illegal foods I’ll be sure to share.”
He swats your hand away, but he’s laughing.
It’s still raining when you pull into the campground, but not pouring. A pleasant sprinkle, really. Jeonghan still complains about it as he and the others try to give you directions to back into the spot. Most of the directions conflict, and based on the way Minghao keeps shaking his head at the others, you probably could’ve been backed into the spot 30 minutes ago if not for-- well, whatever competition is going on behind you. Oh well.
By the time you finally throw the camper into park and get the awning pushed out, Mingyu has already gotten the portable grill out of the cabinet and set up outside, although he’s having trouble with the lighter. The RV is always stocked with six or seven of the stick lighters, but they’re pretty much guaranteed to be on their last dregs no matter when you try to use them. He’s already halfway through the collection, his brow furrowed in concentration as he pulls the spark trigger over and over, the flame only catching for a few seconds.
Jeonghan skips over, calling your name. “Come on,” he all but whines, “let’s go explore!”
“Weren’t you the one who was just complaining about how wet you were getting?” You glance out at the picnic table, which is still getting rained on even as Minghao and Chan struggle to drag it under cover.
“That was just because you were all safe and dry in the RV.” He wraps his arms around you and rubs his dripping hair against your shirt.
“Rude!” you yelp, pushing him away, but you’re laughing, and so is he. You huff, crossing your arms. “Well I was going to, until you started using me as your towel.”
“Well you’re all wet now, you can get a little more wet!”
There’s a barely a damp spot on your shoulder, but he’s got a shit eating expression and even that lights up his face.
“Oh no,” you say, “I’m soaked.”
He grins and takes you by the arm, dragging you fully into the rain. “We’ll be back in an hour,” he calls.
“Text me if you find the bathrooms,” Chan hollers back.
There’s a surprising amount of other campers parked around. A few have adults sitting on folding chairs, outside under an awning, cans in their hands. They wave cheerfully as you pass.
“That’s probably the bathroom,” you note, pointing at the building. It’s so dirty on the outside that you wonder if maybe it would be better in the long run to just take turns in the RV’s shower; most outdoor bathrooms like this are pretty gross inside.
“I’ll text Channie.” Jeonghan takes out his phone, bowing his head to block the screen and types out the message. You giggle watching his wet fingers slip across the screen. He bats distractedly in your general direction, finally managing to land a hit only once the message is sent, his phone in his pocket once again.
You find a playground at the bend in the road, where it doubles back to wind around to the exit. Jeonghan shouts, “Race you!” and takes off across the slick grass.
“False start!” you yell back, and even though he has way too much of a lead for you to catch up, you still take off after him. You see his foot slip out from underneath him once or twice, but the speed of his run keeps him from falling entirely. It makes for a funny picture either way, and you find yourself slipping as you laugh.
He seizes one of the swings, all but launching himself into the air. You skirt around his feet, ducking under his hand as he reaches out, as though to pat your head on the way by. There’s a puddle of water in the swing, but you’re already soaked from the rain that patters steadily onto your head, so what’s a little more?
Still, you wipe it off before you sit down.
Within moments, you’ve caught up to his altitude, the height of each swing leaving you floating at the peak before gravity takes over, jolting you onto the seat again.
“You’re better than I thought,” he says, flying past you, going forward as you swing back.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Your head follows him as you swing by again.
“Nothing.” You hear the grin in his voice.
“I’ll have you know, I was the swingset champion in every school and every camp I ever went to.”
“How many schools did you go to that had a swingset?”
“Sir that is entirely beside the point.”
His laugh rings out. “Right, right, of course.” Rain hits your face as you swing forward (or maybe your face hits the rain?). “I suppose that means you’ve gone all the way around the top bar before?”
“Of course,” you say. “And I nailed a kid in the head with a paper airplane from the peak of a jump off the swing.”
That seems to pique his interest. “Yeah? How many times did you manage that?”
“Once, and then they sent me to the office bc the kid started crying, but it was a good once.”
“If I gave you my shoe, would you be able to throw it to me from the swing?”
You almost slip off the swing. “Jeonghan I’m not going to throw a shoe at your head!”
“Not at my head! Just, to me. Like a gentle toss, so I can catch it and no one receives any bodily harm on the road trip.”
You breathe out. That makes more sense. Bodily harm is not a good road trip adventure.
He digs his feet into the trenches below the swing to stop his momentum, stumbling forward across the playground. He tosses a couple woodchips at you when you giggle, before slipping his shoe off.
“Dude, you’re gonna get your foot all muddy and then what?”
He yanks off his sock. “Then you’ll have to carry me to the RV sink.”
“Or I’ll hose you down in the yard; I saw a couple spigots on the way over and those bitches are icy cold.”
He wipes the shoe in the grass before lining up the shot, planting his foot on the ground. “Alright, catch!”
He misses.
When you’re done laughing at him, he tosses it again, this time actually managing to get it to you, even though it lands kind of wildly against your lap. You lean back for a few good swings, regaining the altitude you lost from the distraction of the catch and the laughter.
“Ready?”
Your first throw goes wild. The second nails him in the chest. The third he actually manages to catch.
By the tenth you’ve graduated to trick shots. He leaned over the playground equipment nearby and caught it. He tossed it to you from under his leg, and you caught it. You threw it over the bar and under the bar and with your nondominant hand and backwards and he caught it again and again.
“Alright, time for the jump.” You adjust your grip on the swing.
“You’re sure this is safe?”
“Of course it is.” You gesture for him to toss you the shoe, which he does. No trick shots that time. “I’ve done it before, remember?”
He looks oddly worried as he resumes his position on the ground a short distance away.
“Relax babe,” you say, “I got this.”
He straightens up at the nickname, a smile flashing across his face. “Alright,” he says, rubbing his hands together. “Whenever you’re ready, babe.”
(you like when he calls you that)
You take two swings, building up the momentum. He takes two steps, eyes focused on you.
You let go.
The shoe leaves your hand, and your feet hit the ground, and then the woodchips slide and your balance is lost and your hands slam into the ground too.
He calls your name.
You huff out a breath, and then another, processing.
“Are you okay?” His hand is on your shoulder, and his eyes dart over you as he checks for injuries.
“Totally fine,” you say. “Did you catch the shoe?”
He huffs, half exasperated and half amused. “That’s your priority?”
“Listen dude, I didn’t just make the sickest trickshot of the year just for you to drop the shoe cause I broke my ankle.”
He shoves your shoulder and you clutch it like he’s wounded you, dropping to the ground with a grin.
“Of course I caught it,” he says. “I would’ve caught you too but you jumped the wrong way.”
You scoff. “Alright, that’ll be the next trick shot.”
For a second you think he might actually be considering it, but his phone rings. He answers, listening for a few seconds before moving it away.
“Mingyu got the grill working,” he says to you. “Chan added helpfully from the background that if we’re done kissing we can come back for food.”
You raise your eyebrow. “We’re kissing?”
He shrugs. “If you want.”
He says it flippantly, but his eyes trail over your lips.
You stand up, helping him up after. Your hands linger. He’s still looking, and you find your eyes drifting too.
You lean in, quickly, before you can change your mind, and press a soft kiss against the corner of his mouth. He freezes, and then pulls you close, a real kiss this time. It’s like a fire exploding, and the chill of the rain is forgotten. You can hear a faint “Ew!” from the phone still held in Jeonghan’s hand, and you feel him smirk against your mouth.
You break apart, staring.
And then you take off like a shot across the grass. “Race you!”
You hear his footsteps chasing after you. “Hey, no fair! I’ve only got one shoe!”
Throwing your head back, you laugh, the rain slamming into your face.
(like a call and response, his laughter reaches your ears. it sounds like a sunrise)

One piece matchup - lirulee
Giveaway prize for @lirulee
Tumblr media
I’m a 30 y/o woman and I'm interested in men, I'm an ENFJ and a Taurus. I’m short and curvy, with long dark blond hair and green/blue eyes, and lots of freckles. I have a cute/sweet appearance, so i always try to dress more in an elegant/formal way, with darker colors to appear more mature. I’m also a bit insecure about my weight and my smile. I’m honest, stubborn, determined and I always find humor and funny sides to everything. I’m an optimist, everything works out eventually, and I always try to find the good sides of every outcome. I’m very passionate about the things I like, and I’m usually cheerful. I love dad jokes, puns and absurd humor, but I also love cynical and sarcasm. I’m a bit shy at first, but i’m very talkative and i love to get to know more of the people around me. I always try to help those around me (I have to set boundaries for myself here). I’m kind and I care a lot, but I'm also a bit snobbish and very rational. I’m constantly working on improving myself.  I’m a control freak and a worrier tho, so even if I’m cool and I know that everything will work out in the end, I stress a lot about it. (Yeah, idk, I’m like this 🤣). I can be a bit moody and also get melancholic easily. I know myself enough to know how to get out of these states or just get through them, but sometimes I can be a bit difficult. I also have quite a temper, but I’ve learned how to chillax enough to not cut someone’s throat. I love videogames and boardgames/dnd, and ¿do I use my cuteness to win if someone is foolish enough to fall for it? Yes. I don’t usually do it tho, cos i like winning honorably, but if someone is falling for it, it’s their own fault, i haven’t tricked anyone 😈 (that’s what i tell myself... am i more competitive than honorable? Probably). I’m also very into witchy stuff, like tarot, candles, etc. I’m not super methodical tho. I also love fashion and I'm learning to sew. I’m a bit of a scaredy cat, I have some fears, like spiders and heights, and then random things that suddenly scare me, mostly cos I don’t have a sense of control with them or stuff like that. I can’t watch horror movies at all, I have a very strong and vivid imagination and that’d mean I wouldn’t be able to sleep, even if I’m very invested in the psychological side of horror and that tempts me a lot. I like to study people’s motives and personalities. I studied psychology not only to help people, but to understand how they work too. I find it easy to read people and their motives, and know how they’ll probably act. But I can also be very literal and naïve sometimes, it depends a lot on the context. I love reading noir and fantasy novels, I’m a huge nerd of Harry Potter and LOTR, and watching true crimes. I also love romantic novels, and I’m a huge fan of Jane Austen’s. I love doing anything that’s artsy/crafty, I love painting and feeling that I’m creating something (the “I did this” feeling 🙃). My biggest passion and love is music, tho. I’m learning to play the guitar, the piano and to sing, and my goal is to be a music-therapist. I could talk about it for hours, honestly. I’m always singing songs, sometimes very random and funny songs, or even xmas songs in august. My whole life is surrounded by music
I match you with...
Tumblr media
Benn and you are like a balance. Wherever one of the two is weaker, the other is stronger. In the beginning Benn will initiate contact and lead the conversation but once you are at ease around him, he will gladly sit back and let you lead the conversation, if not just let you talk about whatever and listen to you. He also loves the elegance and maturity of your style.
Once Benn knows you, he’ll be able to deal with whatever mood you’re in. You’re moody? He won’t take it personally. You’re feeling insecure? He’ll know just what to say or do to make you feel better, or at least to get you to focus on something else. He also greatly respects that you’re aware of your own weaknesses or bad points, and that you’re trying to improve on them. If there’s any way he can help, you need only say the word and he’ll do whatever he can.
Benn is also not afraid to let you have control over things. This can go from little things, like holding on to certain things, to big things, like the relationship. He knows it’ll make you worry just that little less. Just like you, Benn is also optimistic and will always look for the good in every situation.
Despite his laid-back attitude, you and Benn can definitely have some fun! Benn is a master of dad jokes, as well as sarcasm, so there’s no problem in the laughing department. When it comes to music, Benn enjoys most genres. He loves listening to you play or sing. It doesn’t matter if you’re still learning, Benn will gladly listen in and comment on how much you’ve improved every now and again. He doesn’t mind the weird or funny songs either, he’s used to worse antics than a Christmas song in August. If he’s in the mood, Benn will gladly sing along with you while you’re playing the piano.
When it comes to boardgames, Benn is down to play with you as well. Traditional boardgames are totally fine with him and if you let him know you’d like him to join you, you could even convince him to join you on a D&D adventure. He’ll just play whatever is needed for the party, though he’ll create a character pretty close to his own character so he doesn’t have to roleplay too much, since that’s not really his thing.
Now. True crime. Benn loves the stuff just as much as you do. He thinks it’s fascinating to see what people can do, though it’s also a bit sad. He’ll gladly join in on your psychoanalyses. He’s no expert on it, but he enjoys giving his two cents and listening to you build on that.
To top is all off, Benn has a very calming quality. Whenever you’re scared, no matter what it’s from, he’ll talk you through it and he’ll never make fun of you for it, even if he isn’t afraid of much himself.

As a result, he keeps dying in the middle of battle, causing the rest of the party to have to constantly go out of their way to heal him
He gets very into roleplay, which came from his constant LOLOL sessions, but is terrible when it comes to any kind of seduction missions.
“She looks at you Yoosung with wide, flirtatious eyes~”
Nat 1 on composure, especially when MC is DMing
Zen
Doesn’t quite understand the appeal, but will play anyway because MC asked him too
Plays a high elf wizard
Because “the elves are the prettiest” and “the wizard is the magic class, right MC? With the spells?”
Unfortunelty, his inexperience + a level 1 wizard causes him to follow in Yoosung’s footsteps and die in almost every encounter.
“I cast.. um.. fireball?”
“Roll.”
“....a 2?”
MC be kind to him
He usually doesn’t roleplay much, but when it comes to the seducing missions?
This is the boy for you. Natural 20 charm right there.
He gets SO into it
Jaehee
She understands the game even less than Zen does
Yoosung made her character for her, a half-elf cleric because she’s the mum of the RFA
“A cleric?”
“Yes Jaehee.”
She always ends up using all her spell slot healing Zen’s character, much to Yoosung’s complaining
“I cast-“
“Jaehee that was your last spell slot..”
“Oh... what am I meant to do now?”
“You could... punch the goblin?”
Jaehee ends up multiclassing as a barbarian after she gets more into the game purely so she can stop playing just support and beat the shit out of the enemies
Ends up carrying the team through most of the encounters
Jumin
Oh boy
“MC I don’t understand. You want me to pretend to be someone else, in a made up fantasy world, and kill things for money?”
“......yes?”
Chooses to be a human fighter as that logically made the most sense to him.
And why would be pretend to be a made up race when he already knew how to be a human?
Relies WAY too much on rolls to do things and refuses to roleplay
“Do you want to say hi to the bar-“
“I rolled a 15 MC. What does that mean?”
“J-Jumin just walk up to her and say hi.”
“Do I have to roll for that?”
“Jumin no-“
Spends way too much time working on a backstory for his character that never actually gets revealed
“How can I play a character which an unrealistic childhood, MC? It is extremely over the top for both his parents to have been caught in that fire. The father must have been on a business trip.”
Seven
You already know what’s going on yall
We all know Seven would be that player
Gnome bard. All the way.
“I ROLL TO SEDUCE” is his catchphrase
What’s even more annoying is that he gets a high roll almost every time
“SEVEN NO YOU CAN’T BURN DOWN THE VILLAGE-“
“IM CHAOTIC EVIL I CAN DO WHAT I WANT-“
“THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS-“
He probably gave his character the most tragic backstory of them all “just cause”
He brings a different instrument to the game session every week to use when he’s bardically inspiring someone, much to the dismay of the rest of the party
Gets super into the roleplaying.
Are we at all surprised?
Has definitely cosplayed his character for a session more than once
V
Much like Jumin, V doesn’t quite understand the point of DnD
But if MC wants to play, who is he to say no?
Ended up choosing an elven druid after reading up on the different backstory of each class
The idea of being one with nature was quite appealing to him
Only problem is he has no idea how to help the party- in any circumstance
He’s misreading dice, adding the wrong modifiers, accidentally attacking the party instead of the creatures.
“I cast.. vicious mockery on... that one?”
“V THATS MY CHARACTER YOU WEASIL-“
One time, he ended up critical hitting an ogre and killed him in one hit, much to the surprise of the RFA
He was pretty chuffed with himself for the rest of the game.
“Maybe this isn’t so bad-“
He ended up dying a few rounds later after pissing off a dwarf
Saeran
Surprisingly, Saeran was actually up for playing when you asked him to
The idea of being able to be a different person for a while was very appealing to the boy
He ended up choosing a tiefling rouge from a starter set who he ended up designing himself
Much to everyone’s surprise, the character’s backstory was actually the modest out of all of them
“Why would I give them a tragic backstory? Don’t you think they’re going through enough?”
Protect
Is always the one who’s looting the monsters or splitting the party without permission
Yet somehow hasn’t ended up dying yet?
Saeran doesn’t roleplay either, not to anyone’s surprise, but he does offer the occasional input into in character mission planning just to make sure seven doesn’t end up making them do something extremely stupid that would get them all killed

For the ttrpg ask - for Jude (but also for all of your pcs if you feel like it)!
Tbh I wanted to ask of all the numbers for Jude (I am a curious DM and I love him) but I narrowed it down to four (but pls don't feel you have to answer all four of you don't want): 14, 48, 59, 62
14. what is something they love about themself?
okay, on the one hand, jude still lowkey thinks he’s going to fantasy hell. on the other hand, he’s actually pretty proud of how he’s been able to protect the party. acts of service. it’s proof to him that he is not completely irredeemable.
48. what do they see in their future?
jude just figures he’s going to stick with the party, really. he has this task, and it needs to get done. he hasn’t thought much beyond that. (and it’s a relief to have this much of a purpose.)
59. what is a quiet passion of theirs?
jude is starting to care more and more about... the actual religion he theoretically follows? worshipping altus is starting to make more sense to him. he is also quite a good cook, not in a fancy recipes way but in a huge pot of soup way, and i think it’s become something he enjoys doing.
62. outside of otherworldly forces, what do they believe in?
oooooooooh. i mean-- for jude, his belief in altus is grounded in a specific thing that happened to him? a giant owl very literally appeared in the sky and (from jude’s pov) told him he was doomed. so in some ways, that’s not even otherworldly, that just is a thing that happened.
but like, there is also the question of why jude is a cleric and not a sorcerer, warlock, or paladin. and i think the reason is that his power does come from his belief. but it’s not necessarily a belief in altus, as much as a belief in his own moral failure within a system of right and wrong that altus symbolizes for him.
and yeah, this is slowly turning into a belief in self-determination--which is closer to what altus’s actual domain covers--but jude became a cleric on the power of realizing that he’d fucked up and knowing that he had to do something about it, even if he didn’t know how.
((does it make more mechanical sense for jude to be a paladin? yeah, maybe-- but paladins make a choice, and jude doesn’t even see that he has one. that belief in his own failure runs very deep in him.))

2, 18, 55, 57, 58, and 100for Cat!
Thank you for asking Lydia! Below the cut as some questions got a little long.
2. What are their favourite possessions? Why? (sentimentality, history, price, etc)
I wouldn’t call them favorites but more like prized possessions. She has a simple braided leather bracelet with her husband’s wedding ring in the center of it. She used to wear it as a necklace but once being married to John she stops wearing it, she only wears it again when Lance makes the bracelet for her. The other thing that becomes something prized is a pendant John had made for her birthday, its something that gets a few different forms over the years but it’s loved by her for the memory that it holds. He had it fashioned to look like the night sky with a plane flying over a dried wildflower that she loved to pick the most.
18. If you had to represent them with a flower, colour, and animal, what would you choose?
For flower anything light and soft in color or anything on the smaller side. I know that’s cheating but I always want to say wildflowers of the mountains because they just always fit with who she is to me. Sure we can also go for irises given their meaning and association with the biblical Mary, but Cat isn’t just about the loss and sorrow of her story. To me she’s the little bits of good no matter how bad things can get, much like how wildfires will happen but when its time for regrowth there are always those flowers that come back and bring hope with them.
Color I would put this at a light blue or soft pinks. I’m cheating I know but the light blue more for what her role within the project is and to act as this symbol of being John’s opposite. John tends to be associated with some darker tones of blue, while Cat always(even before I was aware of it) had this light blue association, same color just two ends of the spectrum. The soft pinks is because of the softer nature of who she is, like there’s just something about them I can’t quite put my finger on that just fits with her.
Animal wise I would go with (again please know I am aware of the irony) the Black Footed Cat or bunnies. Okay now hear me out, I had picked “little bunny” as a nickname for her because she can go into this fight or flight mode and freeze and just look so scared like a bunny, however beyond that bunnies can attack and be aggressive its just a bit more rare to see. Now the Black Footed Cat if you are not aware is a very small cat that is actually the deadliest of them, with 60% of their hunts being successful. They are so cute so it’s a little unsuspecting that they could be capable of such numbers for their kills. And yes the size of the two animals also plays a role, I’m sorry Cat.
55. Choose a vine you think perfectly encapsulates their character.
Okay please know that I spent 2+ hours rewatching a ton of vines trying to find one that just screamed her, but I couldn’t find anything. Well okay there was a good amount of Cat while she’s drunk but that’s about it. Honestly please just watch this video and you can get a good vibe of drunk Cat and maybe just a bit of sober Cat too.
57. What’s the most chaotic thing they’ve done?
Catlina tries to not get too chaotic honestly and when she was home she always had people that knew how to quell the chaotic drunk energy that is her. However in main canon she did try to fuck John on the side of the Spread Eagle while her husband was inside the building still, it did not work to say the least. She did then proceed to sing “Bohemian Rhapsody” so there’s that. Cat leaves most of her sober chaotic-ness to her DnD sessions and video games.
58. Which friend do they immediately become a zero-braincelled idiot around?
All the pretty ones. She doesn’t have too many friends in main canon but in other verses she can lose common sense around the attractive ones.
100. If you, the creator, met them, would you two get along?
I think we would get along very well. There are things we could talk about that we would have in common, her morals can line up with mine, and honestly I could even get along with DarkCat even though I don’t always approve of her methods I can’t deny that I don’t vibe with some of them.

Why I am now 100% convinced that Mike is gay with internal homophobia, deeply in love with Will, and using Eleven as a projection
Okay, so before I start this post, I want to say that this isn’t just me being a mad Byler shipper angry about Mileven. This is me looking at subtext within the show (and especially S3) and analyzing from there. I’ve done a lot of rewatching certain scenes and looking into things deeper. I’ve also discussed quite a bit of this stuff with @kaypeace21 and we agree on pretty much everything.
For the longest time I thought Mike was BISEXUAL with a crush on El, projecting it as being way more than it was (because the dude went from 0 to 60). S3... S3 convinced me that Mike is not bisexual after all... I am now 100% convinced that he is GAY and suffering from internal homophobia (seriously, looking at his actions in S3 puts his ‘oocness’ and over the top behaviour in S2 into a lot better perspective). WILL’S behaviour also makes a lot more sense when you look at him as being gay and deeply in love with Mike (I won’t get too much into that though, because most of the fandom already believes that he is gay and in love with Mike).
Before I go into things properly, I would like to say that I am not implying that Mileven doesn’t love each other... They do. What I feel is that they love each other PLATONICALLY (El might have a bit of a crush on Mike, but mostly I think she gets confused).
Season One
Okay, so there wasn’t a lot of Byler in S1 - it was more Mileven based, but still. There WAS Byler content there. To start with, I would like to say that... I don’t really buy Mike’s crush on El. It feels... weird and forced. It never really felt RIGHT to me, and I never really saw the chemistry. It was weird.
Now, a lot of people say that Mike wasn’t THAT determined to get Will back in S1... I disagree. I actually think that he and Joyce were the ones that were the most determined to get him back... in the sense that they NEVER GAVE UP ON HIM (Mike and Joyce are actually paralleled A LOT. Like... A LOT. When it comes to WILL - as in they BOTH LOVE HIM DEEPLY). MIKE was the one who organized the search party after Hopper told them not to. MIKE was the one who was most visibly upset when talking to Hopper in the first place (boy looked like he wanted to cry and seemed really annoyed by Lucas and Dustin bickering). MIKE was the one who noticed immediately when Will wasn’t at school and thought it was strange. MIKE also was the one who most adamantly denied that Will was dead. I don’t think he even processed his death tbh. His reaction was... weird. He seemed to be more mad at El for lying to him than sad that Will was gone. And we know Mike loves Will a lot so it’s not that he didn’t care. He cared A LOT. He just... could not process it properly. And then AFTER SEEING WILL’S BODY JUST BEFORE... he heard Will on the radio (with pretty bad reception) and IMMEDIATELY knew it was Will. Like... in no seconds flat he was alert. And that boy clung to the hope. He didn’t even think he was losing his mind or anything. He KNEW it was Will because he never processed that he was dead. He even said when he saw the body in the first place that it COULDN’T BE WILL.
Lucas was determined too and I give him lots of love for it... Dude is BRAVE and LOYAL and risked his life. But he also was way more accepting that Will was dead than Mike and Joyce.
And as far as Eleven in all this... Mike was IMMEDIATELY physically attracted to her. As soon as he saw her. While she not only looked like a BOY, but looked a lot like WILL. Seriously El and Will look similar! Hopper EVEN CONFUSED THEM FOR PART OF S1. That was deliberate I think, and clearly not because of Willel because Willel was never really developed. Mike only actually ADMITTED that she was pretty when she dressed like a girl, but he also started sending her heart eyes... like really quickly. When he barely knew her at all. It was... weird. And forced. I think he started seeing her as a projection for his love for Will (S3 strongly implies this to be the case). Naturally all of this was subconscious. Pretty much the whole series so far this boy is in denial. And a lot of people think Mike put El before Will... I disagree. Mike DID go to look for El, but keep in mind... EL COULD LOCATE WILL. At that point Mike was convinced he had a crush on her, but WILL was his priority. He KNEW El was crucial to finding Will. Think about this... they run charging into the gate... and end up in an Upside Down version of Hawkins with no real idea where Will is and a monster on the loose. Using El to find him was IMPORTANT. Notice how Mike was immediately back to wanting Will located as soon as she was with them again. How he wasn’t prioritizing her getting exhausted over her trying to find him. He even referred to her as someone they could use to find Will... multiple times. AND he told her that they could go to the Snow Ball when WILL WAS BACK. Mike didn’t forget about Will. Mike prioritized him! AND when they were in the hospital after Will was back... MIKE was the only person who was awake the whole time, eager to see Will, he was the first person in the room (that boy RAN and usually he can’t run for shit), and he put his head over his heart like he was checking he was still alive. People can interpret this as friendship... but I think S2 and S3 greatly contradicts this.
Season Two
I won’t touch upon this one too much, because it has been done to death... but this is the BYLER season. It was everywhere. And not in a platonic sense! Mike was... over the top protective of Will the entire time, and very affectionate. In ways that he is with no one else. I don’t think he ever was even like that with El. and there are SO MANY PARALLELS. With pretty much every ship that has been in the series. There are loads of examples. Most of the parallels were with Mileven... and I used to think that was a hint to Mike being bisexual... but now I think it is a hint to the LOVE TRIANGLE, not his sexuality. Mike was just... REALLY clingy to Will. He was basically attached to him the entire time AND they had a bunch of ‘romantic’ scenes.
Now, as far as El goes... Mike was WAY OVER THE TOP. Like... it was crazy. Very excessive (kind of like his behaviour in S3 but in a different way). At the end of S1 he was sad and missed her... but like a year later... he was... just  too much. He was OBSESSED with El. I always found it really weird. I get that they ‘connected’ but Mike was acting like she was everything he needed in life when he BARELY KNEW HER. And his never giving up on her? He called her every night and that is great. He is a loyal boy... but he did WAY MORE for Will in S1. Mike... thinks he sees her outside his window, but instead of looking for her in the woods (the logical place he could go, where he could find her), he mopes around and acts emo. When Will was in another dimension he did more. Also Mike heard Will on the radio and was right back into action... but he saw El and just thought he was being delusional. He also stopped calling her when Will was in trouble. I’m not saying this like Mike doesn’t care about El. I’m saying that Mike prioritizes Will when need be. He cared for El, but mostly she was someone who he could project his love for Will upon. He could be with her and have a heterosexual relationship and be ‘in love’. This was SUBCONSCIOUS of course. No way would Mike EVER do that knowingly. He isn’t like that. And when El was back... he was SUPER over the top about her. Like.. this guy has convinced himself he is in love with her despite barely knowing her. At all. And his looks at her are so FORCED.
Look at Mike’s ‘soft looks’ towards Will in comparison. They are a lot more natural.
Season Three
A lot of people think that S3 is pretty much the end of Byler, but I disagree. I think actually S3 confirms for sure that they are in love. I mean... to me it is so obvious. And it explains their behaviour SO WELL. I mean look at Will. That boy was incredibly jealous of El. He had no problem with Dustin and Lucas having girlfriends, but Mike??? Will got REALLY pissy and there were multiple times he looked upset over Mileven.
And Mike? WOW. S3... is when I KNEW he most certainly had to be gay for ANY of his behaviour to make sense. Mike.. was an ass. Definitely. BUT I think there was a reason for his attitude - not justifying it, just explaining it.
What started me off with wondering was @kaypeace21 posting analyses on Mike’s behaviour and... they made A LOT of sense to me. (They can be found here and here). People can easily dismiss this... but I actually think it is wrong to. I mean... Look at Mike’s behaviour in S3. How he treats both EL and WILL especially.
Mike is... distant with Will while he also still clearly loves him deeply. He isn’t visibly affectionate with him anymore, but look at how he was with him in the theater... SOFT and concerned like usual. Look at him after he upset Will during the DnD game. Wasn’t he MORE upset over that than he was over lying to El and hurting her? When he is supposed to be madly in love with El? That... makes no sense. A lot of people think Mike doesn’t care anymore, but I think he is actually realizing that he is in love with Will and is trying to squash it. Notice now, when they are GOING THROUGH PUBERTY (you know... a time when you really get a better sense of your sexuality) he is suddenly being off with Will. Will who he is used to be very affectionate with and had no issues with. Now he isn’t really like that anymore. And he is suddenly wanting to act VERY hetterosexual.
Maybe because he has internalized homophobia???
See how he is with El. It’s... not at all how he was with her in S1 and S2. I think it’s because now he is going through puberty and El is going through puberty... and she looks more and more like a WOMAN. I think Mike’s obsession with her was breaking because it became A LOT harder for him to convince himself he was in love with her because she was looking less and less ‘boyish’. I mean... look at his behaviour. He was being a dick. And sexist. I strongly believe that he was trying to emulate the heterosexual relationships of his friends and the feelings that they had... but he was overcompensating for it. And acting too much like I AM A BOY WHO LIKES GIRLS. I AM IN LOVE WITH EL!
This is also why Mike was REALLY going hard with how much he loves El in public... When the Byers moved he was really going with it when they were in the group, but when they were alone he didn’t act sad really. Then they were outside again and he was being lovey dovey. Isn’t that more proof that he is trying to convince everyone else that he loves her?
All they really did was kiss. He barely got to know her more as a person and didn’t like her going outside in the world. He saw her more as a possession. He wanted to be with her romantically but he DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO. And then he tried emulating the people around him and took it a step further. He went way too far. Even CHARACTERS IN THE SERIES thought it was over the top. I think... Mike was trying REALLY HARD to convince both himself AND everyone else that he was in love with El. Just look at that cabin scene. Mike went crazy there, said he loved El... and everyone reacted strangely. And then MIKE reacted strangely too. It was like he had NO IDEA why he said that. AT ALL. Then in the store when he was trying to confess to her... I’m sorry but I don’t buy AT ALL that he was nervous. He was... way too over the top and forced and I could literally feel him forcing himself with it. Like wow. He was really going hard while not being able to express how he felt. AND he said that to him love makes you CRAZY. (like this, perhaps???) Interesting that of ALL the sayings he could come up with, it was that love makes you CRAZY. There are loads of sayings about love, but to him it’s going CRAZY WITH SOMEONE.
Also... when Mike told El that she was ‘the most important thing in the world’ to him, the tone was weird. Honestly I think he was trying to convince himself that it was true. His speech to Will was a lot more honest and heart felt. I think Mike understood the implications of what he said to Will and then was trying to force it onto El. Mike loves her, but he sure hasn’t treated her like she is the most important thing in the world to him??? Sounded empty to me.
I will note that Mike seems to parrot a lot of cliche ‘love expressions’ with El in general. Like he is saying what he thinks he is supposed to. Acting like he is supposed to.
Also funny how... when they are at Will’s house... MIKE CAN’T REMEMBER SAYING HE LOVES HER.And he probably can’t remember trying to confess either. Soooooo he can remember meeting Will when he was FIVE and the whole ‘crazy together’ thing from the year before... but he can’t remember either saying he loves OR trying to confess to the girl he is madly in love with THREE MONTHS earlier??? That... isn’t suspect to anyone? Really? In fact... that entire interaction was suspect. Mike was odd. And the only time he was excited was when he mentioned Will... which he tried to play off as being casual. Why do that when it’s just a bro? (And speaking of bros.. why is he suddenly referring to Will as one? That is... odd. Suddenly when they are older and more mature Will is a BRO. Like he is wanting DISTANCE FROM HIM). The whole exchange with El was really weird and not at all romantic. He was shocked by the kiss, didn’t close his eyes, and looked confused afterwards. That five second exchange with Will had more love and happiness in it. And it was flirty.
That exchange... was them saying that they would always love each other. Mike was worried that Will would replace him and Will said he never would. Will said he would ALWAYS love Mike. Which he also said during their fight (that he had believed that they would PLAY GAMES FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES). And Mike will always love Will too... during that ‘confession’ when he talked about ‘going crazy’ with someone, he added in that he wanted to GROW OLD with them. Mike will always love Will too.
Another aside is that as far as Mike goes, playing games is associated with Will and growing up is associated with El... you know... the thing that  a man is supposed to do... find a girlfriend and grow up. I think the scene in the garage was Mike being defensive tbh. He was just crazy asserting that he was doing what he was SUPPOSED TO DO. And... when he wasn’t with El anymore, he started playing games again. He was doing what he WANTED TO DO. Playing games seems to be his natural inclination, but he is also curbing it... In that scene with El, he started talking about how he likes presents but then stopped himself and reprimanded himself. He wanted to sound more like an adult. To me it seemed like he was trying to force himself from what he wanted (Will) to what he was supposed to want (El).
Despite how awkward and not into it Mike was, he seems to be trying to cling to El still. To try and force himself back to how he was before when he was sure he was in love with her. I strongly believe that in S4 he will be with El again, but it will be like it was in S3. And if the Duffers aren’t cowards, they will actually have Byler in the end. Honestly at this point Mileven is just... it’s nonsensical more than ever. It’s a joke. I’m not sure how they can salvage it??? They... did not have good romantic chemistry AT ALL. I don’t  think they EVER even had real feelings for each other. And we are supposed to think they are soulmates and in love? Nope. I don’t think so at all. And I think Mike is definitely gay because he tries SO HARD to act like a straight guy. How many straight guys in the season thought he was weird and over the top? A NUMBER OF THEM. Because it was true. The boy didn’t know how to be with a girl once she started LOOKING LIKE A YOUNG WOMAN.
Was some of this me overthinking? Maybe... but remember... while the Duffers have really messed a number of things up with this show... they have generally been consistant With Byler. Also if this is baiting, it’s the worst baiting I have ever seen. They... have gone way over the top with this while developing Mileven very poorly. IDK why they would do that if it was their precious endgame. They might back out at the last moment because they are cowards... but at this moment in time I think this is legit. And they are endgame no matter what because Mike clearly is in denial. Like... his character makes a lot more sense this way.
Mike loves Will NOT El.

Letter from a Harpy
Authors Note: This story was written by me (@coolcattime) and my friend @atlass-coat. Both characters are used for a dnd campaign ran by Atlas and belong to us.
Moodboard also made by @atlass-coat.
This story is about those characters and their friendship, it concerns the past of one of the characters and the tension that the people from that past can bring.
For more stuff about Medli (one of the characters in this story) check out her character dossier that I wrote: here.
Content Warning: Implied abuse, implied self-harm, implied school-related trauma.
Tumblr media
Idric Ba’lor and Medli took their stay in a port town where their ilk ran through the streets. Although the outspoken adventurers and flamboyant merchants may be an annoyance to some, they made the duo feel at home. Well, as at home as a tiefling and water genasi can feel, especially when neither was interested in blending in.
The two have already been travelling together for quite a while, this town serving as just another in a short line of places they had travelled to. Upon arriving, docking Idric’s boat in the town’s port, they had started calling the local tavern their refuge.
This particular night had been spent telling tales and hearing the local fables, as well as more than a few drinks. The night had been another hectic one, ending with the two being the last of the guests to retire to their rooms.
Idric strolls out of his room just before the afternoon took hold. He walks up to the bar with a smirk while jostling his hair, and after a short conversation with the barmaid, he joins Medli at a table. She smiles at her friend, hearing the unique clack of his jackboots. She decides not to question the drink in his hand.
After half an hour of sitting in silence people watching, she chooses to talk rather than continue the quiet.
“Did you sleep okay?” She opens, cocking her head a little. She chooses to ignore her drink and the last scraps of food now her friend is up and about.
“Pretty well, I mean who doesn’t love a hay mattress, yourself?” He jokes, smiling before comfortably sipping his wine.
The conversation feels radiantly normal, a relaxingly regular set of pleasantries. It was a stark change from the high energy of the night before, but it still feels normal for the two.
“It wasn’t the worst place I’ve ever slept,” Medli giggles quietly. The comfort of the mattress didn’t really matter to her, so long as she got a full night’s rest and to talk with her friend. Actually getting to sleep soundly was usually far easier said than done but at least this night was safe.
“And it’s nice to be on dry land again, at least for a bit.” She finishes tentatively, realising how much time she’d let pass in her head.
“I suppose the dorms in the cobbled hellscape that is Mistwalker can’t be great,” He amuses absentmindedly, rolling up his sleeves and tying them back to sit on his elbows.
Medli shrank down an inch or two in her chair.
“They could’ve been nice,” She speaks low with a frown, “they just need doors that lock.” She hadn’t even realised how common that was until she’d left the college.
Medli idly starts playing with her hair, mostly to distract herself but also because the quiet “whooshing” sound it makes, makes her smile. She isn’t really distracted but it stops her dwelling on the past so much, not that that was really fully possible.
“Sounds so damn safe, bet the nights were restful,” He laughs through his sentence but there’s a clear bite to it. Medli had truly suffered at that college, and though he understands that feeling, her lack of anger, or even blame towards those who caused it, never got easier to watch.
“Well,” She opens, unsure of the rest of the sentence. “At least I don’t have to go back any time soon.”
She ends her point with a smile or at least an attempt at one. The memories won’t go away on their own, but she can try to avoid them by switching into a less uncomfortable topic, “So… do you think we’ll get to do anything here?”
“You never know what’ll come up – I’m sure something will be worth the trip,” He responds, more than happy to talk about literally anything. Idric also definitely wasn’t wrong, something always seems to come up, they would always manage to find a story worth telling.
The silence gave Idric a moment to collect himself, trying to decide how to broach the next topic and whether it needed to be done now. Before he could truly decide anything, he begins to speak.
“And you got this, the bartender says it’s from a college,” He tries to sound neutral but, he can’t help but sound invasive. He scrapes the letter across the table “So, what’s she want?”
She untied and unfolded the letter, paying little attention to its content, instead she watches her friend. His furrowed brow, scrunched-up nose, and crocked neck are pretty hard to miss.
Idric knew Clarissa was the sender but that wasn’t enough, he needed to know if his other guesses were right too.
Medli skimmed each line with bloodshot eyes, completely panicked. She spends the time she could’ve spent reading it to try and stop the blaring signs of being caught from showing on her face. This was not done well.
“Why is there another one?” She witters under her breath, not even meaning to speak but being far too flustered to stop herself.
Idric’s face can’t decide between a scowl or a smirk, between anger or vindication.
“Exactly, oh exactly what I thought,” His theory had been proven correct, but now new theories about why this was kept from him start to swarm his mind. Meanwhile, Medli is frozen, doing her best not to scream or cry as her mind berated her.
He breaks the silence.
“Walk with me,” Idric stands, trying to rub the tiredness out of his face. This is something best discussed privately.
He walks into his room under the stairs, Medli follows him, barely stopping herself crumpling the letter. As much as she wants to, she couldn’t bring herself to destroy it. She couldn’t destroy any of them.
After letting her into the room, Idric comes the door with a loud spin, unintentionally making Medli flinch.
Idric, in an attempt not to make another loud noise, confines himself to the bed, kicking his legs over onto the headboard and placing his hands on his knees.
“Right, so, Clarissa is doing what exactly?”
“She, erm, she…” Medli stumbles over her words, completely lost with what to say next. She doesn’t want him to be angry, even if she knows she chose to hide this from him. “She’s been sending me money.” Escapes her before going silent once more, digging her wrists into each other.
“You’ve been getting gold in the mail!? From the Harpy Queen herself?” He can’t help but sound disgusted, the break in his voice only adding tension to the room. “And you didn’t think it relevant to your travelling companion? Your violin in crime? Am I just a set of strings to you?” Idric tries to laugh but the fire in his throat won’t let him form the sound.
Medli feels her heart slamming against her ribs, it’s beat paralyses her, pinning her to the spot. “I…” She is barely able to speak, her voice shakes but her is body rigidly still. She tries desperately to get her words out, but nothing comes. She can’t help but think she’s within a drought, a very dangerous place for a water genasi to be. “I told her I didn’t want it, that we were— but the letters aren’t exactly nice…”
“Not exactly nice, how?” Idric over-straightens his back, interrupting her, remembering who drove this rift between them. He could sense there was something else, something she either didn’t want to tell him or just didn’t want to say.
She gnaws at her gum. For a brief moment, she considers lying her way out of this or just running back to her room, but Idric is her friend and whether he would figure out this situation or not, she can’t keep hiding things from the people she trusts.
More than a moment passes with neither sure of what to say before Medli composes herself enough to answer his questions.
“They all say that the gold is so I can get back to the college… when, I, um, I, come to my senses because you’re just going to…” Medli trails off into silence, choosing not to finish that sentence. The letters were filled with Clarissa’s usual language, the type that Medli learnt to expect would be bad but even that didn’t seem to make them hurt any less.
The question of if she deserves to hear them enters her mind with a wince before Idric responds.
“Wow, they really do not like me, do they? And gods, how low must they think of you, dear?” Idric starkly switches from guttural to a softer mumble between questions.
He remembers feeling that kind of helplessness, anger isn’t the tool here. She needs her friend by her side, not at her throat.
“I mean, she doesn’t seem like she has a high opinion of you either,” Medli bites her lip again, trying to hold her nerve but unable to stop rereading each letter in her head.
“Apparently though, I can still corrupt your little mind with my evil devil powers, apparently,” He moves his hands in the spookiest fashion he can think of before jolting up onto his feet. His coat whips around with him, as he uses a simple bit of magic to create a gust of overdramatic wind, really selling the silliness of his words.
He meets her eyes hoping for a laugh, or at least a smile, but only a tear-stared stare meets him. He exhales softly, trying to create a level of calm that they desperately needs. “You seem more scared than angry that I found out or embarrassed you’d been caught. That’s a hell of a plot twist, what’s this doing to you Meds?” He isn’t even sure if that made sense, but this room can’t lay silent any longer.
“Clarissa, she keeps,” Medli takes a breath of her own, attempting to push through a hive of anxiety. She needs to get her words out; she just doesn’t want to say any of it. It frustrates her. She knows exactly what she wants to say, she just can’t push through for long enough to pick the words.
“In all the letters, she said that you’re going to abandon me. I… I thought that if you found out you’d…” She doesn’t want to finish that sentence either. Everything feel like it’s in an ocean of anxiety, confusion, and a creeping certainly that Clarissa may have been right. She has always hated that thought, but she couldn’t let it silence here anymore, regardless of the outcome.
“No one’s ever stuck by me. Basically everyone at the college stayed away from me unless they were planning something that would make everything worse. I didn’t exactly make many friends before I met you.”
She finally looks up to face him, expecting anger or, at the very least, confusion. She finds neither. Idric instead produces a comforting smile, presenting a dimple she didn’t know he had. Idric had a look like this memorised from far too many evenings on the other side of it, that didn’t mean he actually knew how to help though.
“Before you met me yes, but my dear, this is after. A lot has changed and one of those things, potentially the best change, is that we are going to stick with each other,” He feels confident that would’ve resonated with him, so hopefully that’ll be enough. “I know everything’s all new but listening to the ramblings of a harpy can never be the solution.”
Clarissa’s words have done far too much damage, letting them do more is unacceptable. She will not cost Medli another friend, however clever the gaslight she holds.
“But if I ignore them, then she’ll,” Medli shifts a little, still unable to let go of her fear, even if it felt ridiculous, she needed to give it a voice. “She’ll show up in person again.” Her whisper almost comes out as a scream, with each word laced with sheer dread.
Idric doesn’t miss a step in responding.
“Then we deal with that then, and we deal with it together,” He offers his drink with a sort of ‘half-toast’ before taking a drink. “Hence why we’re a team, I thought you knew what you were choosing when you got on my ship and not hers.”
He still can’t seem to shake her out her quivering shoulders and a winced smile. He is far from giving up, though.
“Though, if I may, I’ll remind you—” He takes a moment, stepping towards her silently, still offering a warm expression. “Clarissa’s reign is over. It’s just us now.”
She still doesn’t know how to respond. Neither of them had been here before, and she had no idea what to say. Offer gratitude and pretend it’s all fine? Start to cry? Keep ranting until he admits defeat?
“What’s the worst thing she can do to us right now?” He tries to prompt her to speak, hoping to get her out of her own head.
“She…” Medli barely gets her first word out, too concentrated in watching her forefinger and thumb press and push at her wrist. She couldn’t take her eyes off it.
“I suppose you’re right.” She sounds hopefully insincere.
“I mean, you’re hanging with a literal devil darlin’, what’s she gonna do, tell Asmodeus we are being mean to her?” Regardless of what she’s hiding, now is a time for hope. They can face the rest of her story when she’s ready.
Medli feels the load on her shoulders lift, even if not completely, and looks up finally meeting Idric’s eyes. “It’s just… I don’t understand how she knows where we are. Every time we stop, somehow another letter comes. It’s like she’s still watching me.” Her voice sounds far less shook up, and her breath begins to catch up with her, but she still can’t seem to escape her nerves, or the ever-growing number of questions of how Clarissa could be doing this.
“We can definitely deal with that,” Idric speaks with confidence, beaming with the thought of a new plan forming. “I know a diviner or two, I’m sure they’ll know something or learn it quick enough.”
“I do love a crowd but she’s not even paying to see us.” He laughs to himself.
“Well, I mean technically…” Medli interjects, unsure if a joke this early is okay. Idric seems to think so though, and the two share a quick laugh.
“If we can’t figure this out though, I am sure we can deal with Clarissa the best way we know how,” Idric tries to conclude the topic with reassurance.
“I’m sure she won’t see us coming!” Medli remains smiling, doing so properly for the first time since this mess started. Though, that smile almost breaks as the weight of the paper in her hand hits her again. “I suppose I should get rid of this.”
“Give it to me? I want to see what we’re up against anyway,” His tone refuses to force the decision, instead he sits back on the bed, cocking his head in anticipation. She hesitates for a moment, having not sure what might be in this one; but hands it over anyway.
He reads it slowly, each of his features filling back up with anger. The second the last line is read, he sets the letter alight, attempting to burn away his seethe with the ink. Surprisingly though, it seems to work, and he smirks once more.
“That was certainly a read,” He begins. “I— I’ll go find an old friend of mine, and with their help, we will be able to go over some word choices and disputable phrases, then I am sure she’ll apologise, and we can be on our way.” Idric’s intonation falls into a level of clarity and over-pronunciation that only comes with the desperate need to hide one’s anger.
Medli, on the other hand, only has one thought.
“Do you think they will be able to find her?” Her lips can barely keep up as the words fall from her mouth.
“I’ve never known them to fail before,” He smirks reassuringly.
“Well, that’s nice at least,” She pauses, finally seeing the end of this. “Do you want me to destroy the other letters too?”
“Let me take a look at those too - if that’s okay? It’s important to know one’s public perception after all,” He lets out a singular chewed-up breath posing as a laugh.
Medli rushes off to their old table, she returns holding her bag and awkwardly begins to dig through it. She pulls out a tied stack of letters and hands them to Idric. He throws them into his coat, trying his best to not let the thickness and potential number take too much of his attention.
“You didn’t need to keep this from me, you know? We’re a team as much as you want us to be,” He offers with a soft gesture.
“I didn’t mean too. I was just scared when the first one came and by the time that I stopped being scared of that one, there was already three more and then that felt a lot harder to explain,” She almost says every word at once and can’t help but look relieved when realising they were in the right order.
“You’re a bard Medli, you’ll pick all this up as we go. Explaining the bizarre and traumatic is part of the job.”
Medli laughs a little.
“Can’t I just play violin?”
“Absolutely not.”

(Music by Samantha Pena, soudncloud user spena1989) Not gonna lie, I'm at a point with All Wounds where I'm like...oof, I wasn't able to envision everything I wanted to a few years back (by a long shot) but I'm kinda...wanting to be done with it. Even though I don't want to be done with it. 😅All Wounds was created from the get-go to be a visual novel - that's why the initial demo released so early into the project's life. My original intent was to go back and forth between fic and VN. But my original intent was also to end the story during the Portland road trip (Chapter 7). And while you could certainly make a case that the story is technically stronger up until that point, and becomes less potent and more dragged out for it's post-time-skip stuff, the latter stuff was also just...a lot more fun to write. And when I look back, if I had committed to the visual novel as intended, we'd not have gotten, like, ANY of that post-time-skip stuff, which includes Other Max being as fully fleshed out as she became. She'd have been stuck being a ghost in Max's head, pretty much. At this point, though, it's been so long, the fic I made INSTEAD of working on the visual novel is SO long, interest in the project peaked back while it was being written, working on this by myself is DAMN exhausting in terms of time spent, emotion and mentality drained, etc. Whenever I go back and listen to all of the amazing music made by people in the LiS it reinspires me to keep working on All Wounds but that's had diminishing returns as my life has changed drastically this past year. I love Max and Chloe. But, tbh, I just moved to a new country and got married, and I love my wife more than Max and Chloe? ^_^;; I’m not depressed and stuck in retail hell anymore, relying on staying up late working on a LiS fan project to channel that depression. I don't wanna completely shut the door on the visual novel and there's a chance I may still try to keep pushing to at least get to that road trip and maybe fudge it a bit. After all, a LOT of work has been done to the project that isn’t apparently or accessible in the public version; and I was able to add pretty well presented versions of Chapters 3 and 4 recently. So it’s entirely possible I could at least push it a little bit further if I end up inspired to do so. Either way, regardless, I still want to try some kind of epilogue, end-cap, etc, maybe even in VN form (Jenny and I had envisioned an epilogue where the characters play DnD). Max and Chloe mean the world to me, and exploring a version of events where both endings of the original game are expanded and tied together felt very cathartic. I'd rather that exist in SOME form (fic) than none at all; I think I'd still have done things this way a second time. But All Wounds inherently was a story about processing pain and grief and trauma and figuring out how to cope with it and heal and move on. And when I was at such low points, that made sense to write and steep myself in. But now? It just kinda doesn't. More than anything, though, is the fact that it's still a fan project - one that has had a lot of its interest evaporated for multiple reasons. The game’s ending is over four years old now; a prequel AND a sequel have both come out, further fragmenting the fandom; people have moved on. And it’s easy for outsiders to not realize how emotionally exhausting and sometimes painful All Wounds was, has been, and can still be for me to work on. Even things like pieces of music or art made by people who hurt me, who I hurt, that shit isn’t easy to work with. I could be spending all of this effort and energy on something less emotionally painful that isn't complete in ANY form AND is original. It feels bad to seriously consider dropping it when I'm sure there are still SOME people out there waiting for it, but I have other stories that I really need to work on. I can't keep myself locked in this cage forever when the work is such an unreasonable mountain to surpass. What I HAVE created is a fleshed out and substantial story and a chunk of it imagined in VN format which all kind of acts as a love letter to PriceField as well as an ultimately cathartic way to leave that original game to rest, I hope. Going forward I really think I'd like for Arcadian Rhythms to function as my one sole fanfic project I do inbetween original works, with one-shots or other bits (like the Butterfly Soup fic) just being other, far less intensive ways of working out those kinds of inspiration. It would probably do me better to also not talk about what I'm working on (aside from AR I suppose) in much depth or detail until I have something finished to really show for it. 😓 So if you want to see what I’ve been able to make of the visual novel so far, you can find that here.If you want to read the prose fic version of the story, which was finished quite some time ago (and which is where I want to update with an epilogue eventually), you can find that here. My newer fandom project, Arcadian Rhythms, which actually does feature Life is Strange characters, can be checked out here. You can follow our Patreon over here - we’ve been on hiatus as we deal with immigration but that should be all sorted soon. Regardless, any major updates to projects will be getting posted there once we’re back up and running. And you can follow me on Twitter over here; or just check back on my personal Tumblr here as I’m sure any meaningful thing I complete, fanfic or otherwise, will get posted here. So to clarify, current creative plans for the future on my own time: - original fiction projects (I’ve actually started work on an original VN for ex.) - Arcadian Rhythms for fun - some kind of epilogue for All Wounds - some kind of conclusion to Runners at the Corners (Butterfly Soup)
Interest in AW severely declined after the fic was done, no one else seems interested in working on it, either, it'd be SO MUCH work still. Sunken cost fallacy is a thing and tbh that’s part of why I even pushed myself to finish the update I did a few weeks ago. I am sorry to anyone who’s been waiting all this time for it - what I managed to produce is still a multi-hour visual novel, and I am still contemplating trying to at least get it to the end of the pre-time-skip. At the very least, there is still a complete story that can be read in fic form, the project just floated up and away from a reasonable grasp for one person, mainly because I just...wrote way more than I originally intended to. When I started work on this prokect, I also didn’t expect to fall in love, struggle to make ends meet, move across an ocean, and get married. And as important as All Wounds has been to me, I did at least finish telling the story I started, and the story it became, but I’ve learned all I can from it at this point and am so tired of trying to drag it out on my own. In the same way All Wounds sees Max and Chloe needing to accept their losses and let themselves move forward despite not everything going how they wanted, I guess I have to do the same with this project. Max and Chloe start a new future together, and it’s that time in my life where I probably should start doing the same. I need to start focusing on telling my own stories with my own characters more than I have been, as well as making more space for this new future with my new wife. And to All Wounds, the most difficult project I’ve worked on to date, as someone I once knew once sang, "I know, I know I made so many promises I know I left you such a mess; Gotta let go, gotta let go, and move on Been walking in a circle for too long"
And as another musician put it,
“Come and see the light of day out in the open It’s like I’m waking from a dream, oh Many days since I have seen the end unfolded Many times that I’ve looked back on all the times that we have had”

“Is it alive?”
I am a huge fan of True blood. I also have some degree of face blindness (as in sometimes, in some situations, I can’t recognize my own parents, or I mistake a stranger for a family member). I obviously know who Joe Manganiello is, and yet, when I first saw his face on today’s GMM, I thought to myself, oh, another celebrity guest I’ve never heard of. Until I heard his voice, and saw his name on the screen. Is it a bad excuse for not recognizing him, that I've mostly only seen him without his shirt on (and with a beard)? Once I saw past the hoodie and shaved face, I was a little starstruck. (I mean, even though I just recently wrote a rant about how all famous werewolves are male and it makes no sense, I have absolutely nothing against Alcide. He carried his canine heritage, and his fur, with honor.)
Tumblr media
Talking about fur, is it just me or has Link appeared to be particularly fluffy in the head region recently? Is he growing his hair out, too? Rhett’s hair surely seems like it has lost the battle against gravity today, but maybe it’s just because for once, they have a guest who is almost as tall as he is...
Also, are they having some kind of “wear your bff’s clothes” week at Mythical? I could swear Link has worn that blue and pink shirt before, and the rust coloured shirt Link is wearing today looks more like something Rhett would wear (if my memory serves me, please correct me - but if I’m wrong, they definately should wear these shirts the other way around, too).
Today’s episode is the second edition of the amazing game of What’s on My Mask?, and just like the previous time, the true star of this game is the Mythical art team. Yes, the masks are weird, but they are also pretty cool and awesome.
Tumblr media
Well, I can’t honestly call Larry the Cable Guy mask cool. I was quite surprised by how long it took Rhett to figure his mask out, but his thought process was a delight to watch. And Joe carefully explaining him that the mask is not something like in the Silence of the Lambs was hilarious. “Put the lotion in the basket.” I wonder if Link has seen that movie? At least he seems to get the reference.
Tumblr media
It took a while, but Rhett finally managed to get from the Sausage man (through Kevin Bacon - Bill Worker - did he actually guess Mall cop? and the Cable Pasta Guy) to Larry the Cable Guy. I think even Link’s Walmart method might have gotten there faster. Let’s go to round 2.
Tumblr media
Joe’s mask is like something from a steam punk nightmare. Very cool, but also pretty scary. Not only because I hate vacuum noises and they absolutely freak me out, but somehow not seeing his eyes through the mask makes this worse. I do wish they’d tilted the camera just a tad more, because the awesome mohawk of vacuum parts is barely visible.
Of course, Link managed to confuse Joe completely with his hints. I mean, yeah, technically you probably use a vacuum to clean your books, but that is a far stretch (I should probably vacuum my bookshelves at some point soon). For once, Rhett was doing the right thing trying to steer Joe’s thoughts away from anything Link said, and since he is starting to look a bit angelic with his long locks, Joe saying it feels like having the angel and the devil on his shoulders is pretty accurate. But how very L.A. is it that after Rhett says this is something you’d take into any room, Joe’s first guess is a bong, and not, say, a vacuum cleaner? Was this the first time in GMM history that Link actually used the word bong?
Tumblr media
Once the cleaning appliances were out of the way, it was Link’s turn to guess.
Tumblr media
The doll head mask Link wore in the earlier version of this game is iconic, but so is the ant farm mask. I’ve never had an ant farm, but if I’m not completely mistaken, it must have taken a while to get the system running, with all the tunnels and everything. And, there are trees and houses above the whole thing! I was dying watching Rhett and Joe follow the ants slowly creeping toward Link’s hair, while Link was perfectly oblivious to what he was wearing. I wish we’d been able to see his expression when they talked about the potential danger involved. His shoulders look worried.
Tumblr media
“Is it alive?”  “Yes.” “Is it contained?”  “No.”
A few questions later:
“Are they gonna remember me?”
This sweet little man is worried about possibly traumatizing the poor things on his head. He is handling the situation surprisingly well, and somehow, he doesn’t panic quite as much as with the orbee in his ear as with an ant. The mask does get a little foggy, though.
In GMMore, the guys try to guess which Dungeons and Dragons creatures are real and which are not. I’ve never played DnD, probably mostly because I live in the middle of nowhere and there can only be so many geeks in one little town. I’d actually love dressing up in a costume for a game night, but the sad truth is, I have trouble finding anyone willing to even play Scrabble with me. I’d like to try DnD though, so far everything I know about the game is based on Stranger Things and iZombie, and now, GMM. Who would have known that the game has actual embassadors, and that Joe Manganiello is one of them?
Oh, and here’s a little tid bit of information regarding the word fartlek - which the guys try to define for the wheel ending. It’s originally Swedish, and means speed play (not the drug, but actual rate at which you are going kinda speed). Fart means speed, and lek means play. I do prefer the definition the guys came up with, though. It reminds me of a similar measure for distance used in Finnish Lappland, poronkusema, which means the distance between the times a reindeer needs to take a break to pee (they can’t run and pee at the same time). Apparently, this distance can be up to 7.5 kilometres.  And this concludes the informative part of this post.
I do wish people still played more games without electronic devices. A game like Dungeons and Dragons leaves so much more room for imagination than a pre-directed video game, and the artwork shown for the real creatures is amazing. My problem with video games has always been that things get too intense - which is why I usually just make crossword puzzles instead. I wonder if my poor heart could take the excitement of DnD?
What a fun episode this was! I’m always impressed at how comfortable the guests seem to be on GMM. When you compare GMM to any regular talk show, they do so much more background research to make sure they have something that fits what the guest is interested in, and it shows. When the guests are having fun, it makes it so much more interesting to watch. I do hope Link gets to visit Joe’s house one day for a game night.

oops! all friend recs edition
listening asked the dnd crew @bronanlynch and @teacupnatasha and @duckswithwings for a rec and they said as one T H E  M E C H A N I S M S so i have consumed this ballad about Cinderella (Cinders’ Song) but gay and in space, which is so incredibly my shit i’m a little shocked i haven’t run across it before.
youtube
reading less of a direct rec and more seeing @dying-suffering-french-stalkers having fun and wanting in, and the last time i asked Wendy "is this as gay as it looks?” was last april with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly SO. onwards, with high hopes. godDAMN do i miss the sea.
two things: i’m at the bit where Captain Nemo is walking Professor Aronnax, the narrator, through his big cool ship. unfortunately, i have been on both sides of the engineer courting ritual of “let me tell you every single detail about my life’s work and all of the numbers involved and my thought process behind each one”
also, the gutenberg translation made the unfortunate choice of translating every instance of the narrator’s very formal manservant Conseil’s usage of "monseiur” as “master” which one, eesh, but two, the manservant’s characterization would be LEAGUES better and very heartwarming if Aronnax were trans. Conseil doesn’t quite know how to support his employer but he got the spirit
watching @sybilius (HAP BIRTH SYB) recced a very specific very gay episode of the 1985 television series MacGyver uhhh a million years ago, i finally watched it, you can view a more extended version of my thoughts here in liveblog format. they boil down to “wow that was real gay, also: what the whole fuck”.
playing @morrak , a person i occasionally have architecture opinions at, in the context of an ongoing conversation about “places with no people in them” recommended NaissancE which is very beautiful and very spooky. i am about forty minutes in and not very far bc i am not good at 3D platformers. but this game is both more and less than a 3D platformer, somewhere between a walking sim and a puzzle game. the soundtrack really punches above its weight here- i constantly feel like i’m being chased, even though i’m pretty sure i’m not (yet)?
this is not Hostile Architecture (TM) as we usually think of it, in the anti-homeless/”””crime prevention”””/nuclear warning site Hostile Architecture (TM) sense, something something architecture is always politically charged even the most demure wood shack, but the structures here do not feel like they make up a place built for or by people. a modern hospital exterior turned inside out and greeblized to hell and back, except with no clear way to exit the hospital. these are not impossible objects in a penrose steps/jastrow illusion/impossible trident sense (yet), there aren’t any major tricks of perspective (yet). here is a gameplay trailer bc i don’t know i have anything valuable to say about it this week. stay tuned
youtube
making my sister wanted scrunchies and i made her scrunchies. they are fabric tubes with elastic inside them there is really nothing more to say other than i love this fireflies-in-jars print a lot and i wish i bought more of it and i cannot be fucking bothered to take a good photo to save my life right now
