136. Don Turnbull (editor) - Fiend Folio (1981)
Tumblr media
Between the publication of the first edition Monster Manual in 1977 and 1981 there were plenty of new additions to the monster roster for AD&D, some of those came out in the Dragon magazine Bestiary column, but many more came out in adventure modules which introduced new monsters like the Drow. Still other monsters came out in the British magazine White Dwarf, which at this time was mainly focused on AD&D, but which would soon become the house magazine for Games Workshop which would have their own games to sell, particularly a little one called Warhammer, both Fantasy and 40k. Idealized in 1979, which is the date on the Foreword, this would be repeatedly delayed, only coming out in mid-1981.
Tumblr media
The Folio would bring together monsters from all these sources and as such become a kind of Monster Manual vol. 2, to be used in conjunction with the Manual to give DMs more options in terms of monsters. It does have, particularly because of the UK influence, a different feel to a lot of the Gygaxian creations for MM. While the MM covers a lot of the more obvious and traditional monsters of Fantasy, which makes sense for a first book compiling them, the Folio goes for more original and frankly weirder monsters. Some of them are kind of funny but others have become iconic.
Tumblr media
The UK slant can be seen in the debut of some darker and more gritty monsters with complex and tragic histories, and no contributor did more for this kind of monster than Charles Stross who would have been the whole of 15 years old in 1979 and was already inventing the Death Knight, the Githyanki, Githzerai and Slaad, some of the more interesting monsters in the whole book. Stross would go on to be a Locus award winning and Hugo nominated science fiction writer.

No. 7.5 - 1978 Reflections, and the Halls of Mystery
Welcome back to the end-of-the-year recaps! This is technically the first TSR iteration of it!
1. Coolest ideas
It's a lot of stuff from D2. The big ticket item is "neutral-ground hostile shrine" -- any time you can muck about with otherwise hostile people without drawing swords immediately is a big win. I know that the reaction table is supposed to mitigate that some but, cmon. Sometimes you just can't think of a good reason that the 9th goblin pack tonight is not immediately hostile. This is a way more natural way to handle it. And it lets you talk and such and experience their culture from their perspective!
2. Coolest Module You Haven't Heard Of
This is honestly a hard one because all of these modules are intensely well known. Gun to my head, I would probably vote for G1. The D-series is cool but frankly there have been more better and more interesting iterations of subterranean hexcrawls -- Veins of the Earth being the currently famous one. But the thing about G1 is, G1 is a surprisingly natural and fun location. Unlike the others in the GDQ series, G1 is genuinely an adventure you could slot anywhere with no context. It is simply a fun raid on a fortress, which I never get tired of. The twists of "they're piss drunk" and "there's a slave revolt in the basement" are really good (albeit in 2024 a little stale) twists on the classic raid-on-fortress formula.
3. The Growth of Module Design
Honestly 1978 represents a rather stagnant year for module design. The most innovative design feature I see is how D1-D3 feeds into one another in a much more naturalistic way than its predecessors, and all through that deeply useful combination of hexmap and random tables with a handful of pre-programmed setpieces. I am eager to see hexmap technology get much better going forward.
Surprisingly, 1978 wasn't too much to talk about? I don't generally think of Gary as an "innovator" in module design space. His main contribution is taking things that already exist and making them feel more natural. Which is not to say that I now buy into Gygaxian Naturalism as this great feat, more than a lot of his competition at the time was seemingly intentionally anti-Naturalism. Their work feels like the reaction to me, Gary is just staying the course of "this should make an amount of sense". Although, his random dungeon monsters mishmash still feels as nonsensical as all hell.
The Halls of Mystery (From Dragon 21, December 1978)
And as threatened, we're going to have a very brief section on The Halls of Mystery, which holds the dubious honor of 1st Dragon Magazine dungeon. I would throw the full header at you, but everything is by Don Turnbull. You may recognize his name, at publication time he works for Games Workshop and he will be heading up TSR, Inc.'s UK branch starting in 1980, leading to the much-beloved Fiend Folio.
Tumblr media
So. Not much to say about this, actually, It's a very large room with some branches. The main schtick of the Halls is that the main chamber contains several mirrors, some of which are magical. There's a big riddle on the desk on the south side, the riddle solution is actually quite obvious (say Excalibur three times -- and hey, Don told us the answer and rationale of the puzzle! Thanks Don!). When you move the central cylinder, it teleports you to the corresponding position in the dungeon. The rest is a lightweight stocking of the dungeon with monsters, treasure, et c. If you're keeping score, this is a Zelda puzzle. It's very cute and lightweight and honestly it's so neutrally written (no statistics are given and it would be trivially easy to restock it at any level) that you could genuinely use it in 2024 with very little effort. It's adorable! It is also wonderfully lean, clocking in at two total pages and frankly it's super refreshing to have such a light read of a module here.
Happily, next time we will be covering B1 - In Search of the Unknown, which is the second Basic D&D adventure we will be reviewing in this series (The adventure printed in the Basic rulebook, Tower of Zenopus, was first. This is our first lettered Basic adventure.) And, funnily, the first TSR module in this lineup I've never read before. See you then!

The main ingredient of war is chumps. The current mess is a subset of the war that started over a hundred years ago, war who itself was a continuity of the Franco Prussian war... With abit of historical perspective, a pattern comes out.
The Cold war was a real intense conflict in which lots of people got killed and made sick. There was absolutely no restraint in the attacks, since it was so covert. America got entrapped a couple of times trying to break the cycle, it just got sucked in and now itself is turning into a conflict hot spot. Russia broke its back in Afghanistan and has been decrepit since. All of it relates to what is happening now.
Looks like WW3 was inevitable. There will be no WW4.

Milano: Il Balletto della Scala debutta al Festival Les Chorégies d’Orange
Tumblr media
#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - There is plenty of hockey news and notes throughout the sport as teams at all levels are preparing for the 2023-24 season despite the continuing saga of the Stanley Cup Championship currently underway that sees the Las Vegas Golden Knights leading the Florida Panthers 3-games-to-1. The New York Rangers rewarded winger Anton Blidh for his strong play in Hartford with a two-year contract extension. Blidh was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche for Gustav Rydahl, who is heading back to Sweden. Blidh will make $775K for playing in the NHL and $350K for his play in the AHL. Cooper Zech was also acquired at the trade deadline by the Wolf Pack. He never played in Hartford but was sent to play for the team's ECHL affiliate, the JacksonvilleIcemen, instead. But rather than report to Hart City at the beginning of the playoffs, Zech instead went home and signed with HC Kosice (Slovakia-SLEL) for next year. EX-PACK AND UCONN PLAYER MOVEMENT A pair of ex-Pack players, Sean Day, is signed again with a one-year extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning / Syracuse Crunch on a two-way deal for $775K-NHK/$200K-AHL and Mike O’Leary signs with the Iowa Wild (AHL). Former UCONN forward Kale Howarth re-signs with the Rockford IceHogs. Ex-Pack and ex-UCONN goalie Adam Huska re-signs with Torpedo Novgorod (Russia-KHL). Allan McPherson with Hannover (German DEL-2). Ex-UCONN forward Carter Turnbull has signed with HC Banska Bystrica (Slovakia-SLEL). He leaves HKM Zvolen (Slovakia). HARTFORD WHALER WEEKEND Whalers Weekend with the Eastern League Hartford Yard Goats (Colorado Rockies) is July 21-22. These are the committed players who will be in attendance as of now; Norm Barnes, Wayne Babych, Bill Bennett, Mark Bousquet (Poodle from Slap Shot), Pat Boutette, Jeff Brubaker, Bob Crawford, Yvon Corriveau, Scott Daniels, Mark Janssens, Marty Howe, Grant Jennings, Chuck Kaiton (Radio PBP), Andre Lacroix, Gerry McDonald, Don Nachbaur, Doug & Gordie Roberts, and Mike Rogers. Several others are possible but have yet to be finalized. Three newcomers exist in Boutette and the Roberts brothers. Rogers, after a year off, returns from Calgary. The rest have been attendees since this started five years ago. FLORIDA EVERBLADES GO BACK-TO-BACK IN ECHL The Floria Everblades won the ECHL Kelly Cup title in a sweep over the Idaho Steelheads. It is their sixth time in the finals and second consecutive championship for Florida. They join five other teams to win back-to-back titles. Two ex-Packs were rostered on the runner-up Idaho. They are Ryan Dmowski (Old Lyme/Frederick Gunn School) and Matt Register. GREG CRONIN AND EX-SOUND TIGERS After three years with the Colorado Eagles (AHL), former Sound Tigers head coach Greg Cronin was hired by the  Anaheim Ducks as the team's new head coach. When Cronin was named the Head Coach in Bridgeport, he announced he had been the only surfer in Maine for the Black Bears while an assistant there. Once, he was forced to apologize after excoriating Maine (HE) fans in an expletive-ridden rant for not showing up for a road game during a Maine Blizzard. Ex-Sound Tigers Greg Mauldin re-signs with Stavanger (Norway-NEL), while goalie Eamon MacAdam re-signs with Guilford (England-EIHL). Lane Sim, the son of ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger Jon Sim, signs with the Sarnia Sting (OHL), who drafted him. DAN RUSANOWSKY Congratulations to the only radio voice of the San Jose Sharks (NHL) since its inception in 1991. Dan Rusanowsky (Milford) received the Foster Hewitt Award and the notice he will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on November 13th. Rusanowsky was the last voice of the Nighthawks (1987-1991) and becomes the second Nighthawks broadcaster that will be inducted into the HHOF on Yonge Street in Toronto. Fellow Californian Nick Nickson (1977-1981) preceded Rusanowsky calling the Nighthawks team as the radio voice of the Los Angeles Kings and was selected and entered in 2014. Rusanowsky was the voice of college hockey for St. Lawrence University (1979-1987). Nickson was just announced as the sole play-by-play voice for the simulcast on TV and radio of the Kings starting next season. Long-time radio color commentator and former New Haven Nighthawk player Daryl Evans has been reassigned to a yet-to-be-specified on-air role. ODDS AND ENDS Ronan Buckberger, the son of former Beast of New Haven forward Ashley Buckberger, heads from Saskatoon (SMAAAHL) to Nipawin (SJHL). Craig Puffer (New Canaan), departs Nottingham (England-EIHL) and signs with HC Anglet (France-FREL) in the Elite Magnus League. Charles Greszes, formerly of Choate Rosemary School in Wallingford-is traded from Tel Aviv (Israel-IHL) to HC Bat Yam (Israel-IHL). Former Hartford Whaler Jim Culhane, the video coach for Denver University (NCHC), was named video coach for the US 2024 WJC team in December. The 30th AHL player to head to Europe is Anthony Hora, from Division III SUNY-Brockport (SUNYAC). He heads to Évry/Viry Hockey 91 (France- FFHG Division-2). Three more also signed Europe, moving the total to 33. QUEBEC REMPARTS The Quebec Remparts (QMJHL) won the Memorial Cup. They did so in a 5-0 shutout win over the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) for their fifth Memorial Cup title in the franchise’s eighth appearance. Undrafted Kassim Gaudet registered a goal and an assist and was a plus-four with five shots on goal. That is a solid performance for a young man with only 11 career QMJHL goals. Théo Rochette had two assists, while undrafted goalie William Rousseau, the grandson of Rangers and Montreal Canadiens great Bobby Rousseau, had 32 saves and won a Memorial Cup 65 years after his grandfather won his under the guidance of a young Scotty Bowman. His late great-uncle Rollie also won a Memorial Cup in the late 1940s. The elder Rousseau is, sadly, in the early stages of battling Alzheimer’s. MORE ON THE ROUSSEAU FAMILY How was the younger Rousseau rewarded? He was traded to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for a possible over-age year if he doesn’t land a pro deal for the next season two days later. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

170. Dave J. Browne, Don Turnbull - U2: Danger at Dunwater (1982)
Tumblr media
The continuation of the U series of modules coming out of the UK branch of TSR, this is a direct follow up to U1: The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, which ended with the party discovering that a smuggling ring was arming a community of Lizardmen not that far from the village of Saltmarsh.
Tumblr media
In this module the story continues as the nervous town of Saltmarsh wants the party to investigate what is going on with the Lizards. However, this module is also a trap for the "murder hobo" type of adventuring party, and if you are DM one of those this would be a great lesson for them, as the Lizardmen has no intention of attacking Saltmarsh but want to defend themselves against a greater evil, an incoming Sahuagin invasion!
Tumblr media
So, some players are likely to go to the Lizardmen colony guns (swords?) blazing, and this is be pretty much a horrible thing to do and by the time they realize the mistake they've made it might be too late and will probably have to pay compensation for all the lizardpeople you've killed as well as return the stolen loot, from what are essentially peaceful people. This story by itself would be enough to make this a memorable module, but if you add to this the neat way in which the module is set out, with a nice recap of events and a plot synopsis at the end of the module to keep the plotline straight, make this a pretty unique publication for the time that is still worth taking a look at today.

Yuki no Kata - Warrior lady of Anōtsu castle
Yuki no Kata (fl.1600) was the wife of Tomita Nobutaka, lord of Anōtsu castle, Mie Prefecture, Japan. Little is known about her early life apart from the fact that she excelled at fighting.
Yuki no Kata is remembered for her exploits during the conflicts that led to the ascension of the Tokugawa shogunate She found herself commanding the castle’s forces in several occasions while her husband was fighting on the Tokugawa’s side. In 1600, Yuki no Kata successfully defended the castle against an enemy army.
Yuki no Kata is also remembered for saving her husband’s life on the battlefield. Tomita Nobutaka had been commanded to return to Anōtsu and found himself surrounded by the enemy. A young samurai with a very feminine face came to his rescue. It was in fact Yuki no Kata who had donned armor. She killed several enemy soldiers and she and her husband managed to escape safely. It is said that even Tokugawa Ieyasu was impressed by her courage after hearing of her exploit.

On 13th March 1873, the Scottish Football Association was formed.
The Scottish Football Association (SFA) was founded at a meeting held at Dewar’s Hotel in Glasgow, clubs represented at this meeting were Queen’s Park, Clydesdale, Vale of Leven, Dumbreck, Third Lanark Rifle Volunteer Reserves, Eastern, Granville and Rovers. Archibald Campbell (Clydesdale) was elected president and Archibald Rae (Queen’s Park) became secretary of the SFA. It was decided that there should be a knockout competition open to all member clubs and the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup was formed. Following the FA Cup, it is the second oldest competition in the world in  association football.
The SFA imposed new rules for these competitive games, helping to “raise standards and putting the foundations in place for the professional game in Scotland.”
The first tournament began in October 1873 and a total of 16 teams entered the competition. The final was held on 21 March 1874 at the original Hampden Park with Queen’s Park emerging victorious against Clydesdale. It was a tournament that Queen’s Park would dominate during that early period
Of the teams that were represented that day Queens Park is the only one that is still running today, of the others;
ClydesdaleFounded 1872, dissolved 1881, based in Kinning Park in south Glasgow (later home to Rangers). Vale of LevenFounded 1872, dissolved 1929, from Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire (to the west of Glasgow). In 1876 they became the first club to defeat Queen's Park ever! One of the first teams to seriously challenge the dominance of Queen's Park. Won the cup in 1877, 1878 and 1879. Rovers FC1873-78. Played at The Queen's Park , a public park in which Queen's Park had originally played. Rovers expressed an interest in the venture, but are not listed as founding members of the SFA. Dumbreck1871-79, based at Glasgow's Ibroxhill. 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers Founded in 1872, the Cathkin Park club survived until 1967. Their military connections were by then a distant memory. Cup winners in 1889 and 1905. Eastern Active from 1873-85 Eastern were another 'public park' team based in Glasgow. Granville 1872-78. This was Granville's only entry into The Scottish Cup. 3 of the players in Scotland's first international XI were members of the club (as well as being members of Queen's Park).
The resolution passed on March 13th was:
The clubs here represented form themselves into an association for the promotion of football according to the rules of The Football Association and that the clubs connected with this association subscribe for a challenge cup to be played for annually, the committee to propose the laws of the competition. The first elected officials were:
President: Archibald Campbell (Clydesdale)
Hon. treasurer: Mr. William Ker (Queen's Park)
Hon.secretary: Archibald Rae (Queen's Park)
Committee:James Turnbull (Dumbreck), Don. McFarlane (Vale of Leven), Eben Hendry (Clydesdale), W. E. Dick (Third Lanark), John Mackay (Granville), James McIntyre (Eastern), Robert Gardner (Queen's Park), and William Gibb (Clydesdale).
A special mention is due to :
Kilmarnock
One of the oldest clubs in Scotland, founded in 1869, Kilmarnock were technically not founder members. They did, however, send a letter to the meeting giving their support to the proposals . They had to wait a while for their cup successes, which came in 1920, 1929, and 1997.
These 9 clubs were joined by the following 7 for the first round of the the first edition of the Scottish FA Cup in October 1873.
Alexandra  Athletic
1873-84- based in the East End of Glasgow.
Callander
1872-74- a short lived Glasgow club who were Rangers' first ever opponents.

Renton
1872-1922.  The Dunbartonshire club were one of the big names in 19th century game.  Played in 5 Cup Finals in the 19th Century, winning in 1885 and 1888.

NEO: The World Ends with You details Coco, Eiji Oji, Eiru, Ken Doi, and Ryoji, side quests, team battles, Pig Noise, and more Pin-related systems
■ Story
As Rindo progresses through the Reapers’ Game, he starts having visions—fragmented flashes of incidents that may soon occur. In one such vision of the future, he sees a ghastly sight: the entire city of Shibuya, crumbling into dust…
Is this an unavoidable outcome, or can Rindo change the fate of the city?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Are the Shinjuku Reapers—whose own home was recently destroyed—in any way involved with Shibuya’s impending doom?
Tumblr media
■ Characters
Coco (voiced by Kitana Turnbull in English, Marika Kouno in Japanese)
“You have no friggin’ idea what I’ve been through to get here, you festering sack of garbage!”
Tumblr media
A Reaper girl who does as she pleases, spending most of her time in Harajuku. She has little interest in her Reaperly duties, sometimes even wandering outside Shibuya. Despite her delicate appearance, she is actually quite cunning, deceiving others to help get her way—but she remains deeply loyal to her friends.
She was with Neku and Beat when a certain post-Game incident occurred three years ago.
Coco reinvented herself after the last Game… on the surface, at least.
—Coco in The World Ends with You: Final Remix.
Tumblr media
—Coco in NEO: The World Ends with You.
Tumblr media
Eiji Oji
“This flower’s almost as lovely as you ladies—almost.”
Tumblr media
A top influencer who blew up a few years ago thanks to his nonchalant charm and half-hearted demeanor. Recently, he has taken the world’s young generation by storm with his calm and lazy attitude.
Tumblr media
Eiru
“Why do I have to sound so different from everyone else?”
Tumblr media
A popular streamer who charms his audience with his unique, high-pitched voice. He only grew comfortable with his voice thanks to Eiji Oji, however, and now hopes to collaborate with him someday…
Tumblr media
Ken Doi
“I’m gonna make a curry that’s all my own!”
Tumblr media
Although he previously ran a ramen joint, a few twists and turns led him to shift his focus to curry. He is currently trying to rebrand by opening a new restaurant: SPICY CURRY DON.
Tumblr media
Ryoji
“Hey, you’re just in time!”
Tumblr media
Shibuya’s handyman who undertakes any task imaginable, from the unbelievably simple to the unspeakably seedy. Born with a strong “sixth sense,” he is deeply connected to the UG.
Tumblr media
The game also features a colorful cast of supporting characters—including some familiar faces!
■ System: Imprinting
Use Imprinting to sway people’s actions!
While Rindo and the gang can’t directly interact with the denizens of Shibuya, they can “imprint” keywords in people’s heads to change their minds and influence their actions. If you can’t find a path forward, try getting someone else to forge a path for you!
—Scan people’s thoughts and chat with your teammates to produce new keywords.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Combine keywords that will resonate with your target and imprint a new idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
■ Side Quests
In Shibuya, you may also come across people who are facing problems or worries. While side quests aren’t related to the missions posed in the Reapers’ Game, you’ll be able to earn various benefits through helping the people you meet.
—In addition to Imprinting, use Fret’s “Imprint” and Nagi’s “Dive” Psychs to solve people’s problems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Depending on the situation, you may need to interact with the Reapers or members of other teams!
Tumblr media
—When an issue is resolved, the Social Network is updated, and you may be eligible to obtain a reward.
Tumblr media
■ Team Battles: Six-Person Combat
Frenzied Combat with Up to Six Party Members
Up to six characters can join the fray at one time! Even if you press buttons randomly, you’ll still be able to experience flashy and exhilarating battles with psychs flying all over the place.
But of course, that’s not the only way to enjoy combat: unleashing each psych at just the right moment will allow you to string together slick combos and tap into a whole new level of strategy. Skillfully align your entire party to topple your foes in battle!
Tumblr media
Chain Battles
Combat will begin shortly after you come into contact with a Noise symbol, but you can string together several encounters by touching multiple symbols in short succession. The more battles there are in a chain, the higher the item drop rate, which will earn you more pins. Beware, though: the longer the chain, the stronger enemies’ attacks will become as you proceed.
Tumblr media
—By unlocking rewards on the Social Network, you can increase the number of chain battles as well as gain the ability to draw in Noise symbols from far away.
Tumblr media
—Your team’s HP will carry over from round to round, so try not to take too much damage!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
■ Noise
Among the enemies you will face, some will prove rather tricky to take down, splitting themselves in two or going temporarily invisible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Pig Noise are among the trickiest of these foes: each type requires a different strategy but poaching these pigs will earn you a handsome reward!
—Some Pig Noise are easy to defeat, while others are only susceptible to psychs of a certain affinity, or only vulnerable under specific conditions.
Tumblr media
—Pig Noise will flee from battle if you don’t defeat them before time runs out, so quickly uncovering their weakness is key!
Tumblr media
■ Pins
Make Full Use of Special Pins
Among the psych pins you will discover, there are “Uber” pins that boast incredible power, as well as sets known as “Pin Ensembles” that activate special abilities when equipped together. Use them well and take your Game to the next level!
—Uber pins are too powerful to be wielded in great numbers—but you can equip more once you reap some rewards on your Social Network.
Tumblr media
—Pin Ensembles can be equipped by any character. Some ensembles only require two pins for the effect to kick in, while some may require as many as six pins.
Tumblr media
Evolve Pins to Make them More Powerful
Pins will level up as you obtain EXP through battles, and some may even evolve into new pins once their level is maxed out. When pins evolve, their basic stats improve, offering more power and faster reboots. Try enhancing a variety of pins and uncover the secrets of evolution!
—Some pins will only evolve under certain conditions. See if you can evolve ’em all!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Snipeline
A pin that will fire “Homing Rockets,” a series of missiles that chase after your enemies. Change targets while charging to lock onto multiple foes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heartful Hot Dog
A pin that activates “Protective Field,” a barrier that temporarily nullifies incoming attacks while damaging any enemies it touches.
Tumblr media
Raven
A pin that unleashes “Patrol Rounds,” a flock of bird-like boomerangs that fly toward your enemies before returning back to you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
