Joining Twitter fandom was a mistake tbh so here’s a rant from me.
Antis love to have their cake and eat it where every single accusation under the sun can be thrown at Izzy and Izzy fans but the moment we point out flaws in their faves suddenly we’re “taking the show too seriously” and it’s “just a rom-com calm down”!!!
(Doing read more cos this got longggg)
Like, okay fine, the show isn’t meant to be taken seriously. But then, if Izzy truly is all the things they say he is then does that mean that the show and all these people are glorifying and making humorous a racist, homophobic abuser??? Furthermore, if they truly believe that their accusations of Izzy as racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and a abuser are true, then how do they feel about how the show-runners and the cast and crew all treat him? Vico adores Izzy and has cosplayed him, David has explicitly told us to watch his and Ed’s relationship and “love story” on a rewatch and praised Con’s work for bringing so much to the character, Alyssa (a black woman and a WRITER) has said if she could be any character she’d probably be Izzy, the list goes on and on. The show and the people involved with it never treat him as anything more than a pathetic (affectionate) lovestruck loser with plenty of nuance and potential for development. If he is all the things they say he is, then shouldn’t it and them go against their so-called morals?
What antis don’t realise is they’re allowed to dislike a character without attaching some kind of moral and ethical debate into it, you can just say you don’t like Izzy cos he’s an asshole and is getting in the way of your ship, that’s valid!! What’s not valid is coming into these spaces and harassing fans for things YOU interpret and decide.

one thing that drives me crazy is when sansa stans say that arya and dany aren’t relatable to “real women” but sansa is. like it really seems like they’re saying that you’re only a real woman if you find sansa’s strict adherence to societal roles relatable. idk like i’m an autistic woman and i felt completely alienated by sansa, and related intensely to arya and dany. like i could never perform society accepted “traditional femininity” in the way sansa does, and i was often bullied for it just like arya, so of course i related more to arya than sansa. like sansa stans are literally saying that if you don’t fit into societies extremely rigid white cishet classist ableist definition of what a woman should be you aren’t a “real woman”. idk like sorry i can’t relate to women like sansa who bully other women for not being “feminine” enough lmao
All of this. That's one of the things I hate the most from Stansas. The obsessive need to make Sansa out to be the "true" or "right" example of female representation. Arya and Dany are incredibly relatable to a lot of people, myself included. I'm not saying everyone has to relate to them, but what happens all too often is that they end up getting reduced to a flat, one-dimensional character so that Sansa ends up looking better. If you have to misinterpret a character to make a point then you know there's a problem.
For some reason we're all expected to relate to Sansa, and only her, and find her more impressive because she uses "traditionally feminine" skills. I can definitely relate to your experiences; some of us are just inherently outside of social standards and have faced a hard time because of it. Sansa being traditionally feminine isn't even necessarily the issue for me, I just dislike how she treats those outside of societal norms. Sansa is very much a product of her society and as such reflects it's biases. It's really such a "fandom" argument too. Like you said, fandom has a very specific and narrow idea of what it means to be feminine. They call themselves feminists while spouting patriarchal standards for what is and isn't feminine. The people who use that kind of rhetoric could care less about female characters as a whole, they just want to prop up their fave.
It's annoying that this incredibly misogynistic standard has become such a normal topic of conversation.

VIOLENCE ASK GAME 🔥 let's go, i'm going to shoot your ask right back at you and say: answer any and all questions you want/haven't already been asked about Overwatch. >:)
so i started answering this and my phone deleted my answers bc it’s opposed to violence but TOO BAD y’all will receive these steaming hot takes i mean cakes!
1. the character everyone gets wrong
already answered but HEAVILY AGREE with ur answer of genji. like it’s exhausting to see people look at him and go yes, he must be the playboy to hanzo’s stick in the mud that’s it :) nothing else :) like. if we’re talking about the it never happened or pre-slice and dice sure i can see that but ??? after the fact??? makes no sense. he’s a very humble and changed man. he is very aware of not only himself and his faults but he’s understanding to others. he also gets angry tho and i feel like a lot of people mistake his newfound patience for lack of anger and it’s like no i think he does get angry but i think he’s in better control of how he expresses it now. long story short even tho genji is not my Main Boy i will fight toe to toe over people’s shit interpretations of him because can y’all get ur heads out of ur asses for FIVE FUCKING MINUTES—
2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
i can’t even answer this bc hanzo is my fave and that man gives as good as he gets— *shot*
3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr + 4. what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?
tldr around the time brig came out a very popular yeehan writer, in their annoyance about people disliking the fact that she was another white character, stated that it was blanket misogyny to dislike any overwatch female character for any reason at this point. i do agree that there can be a problem in fandom spaces where women and femme characters are hated for essentially the sin of being women but the way they were putting it and talking about literally any reason that you dislike a female character in overwatch or in general probably meant you were a misogynist. and just. it’s so stupid that people think that the Act Itself of disliking a female character means that person hates All Women. like that’s a wild take to me and i dislike this take in general. call out misogynistic behavior, yes, but people are allowed to dislike female characters lmao???? stop putting them on pedestals just bc they are women lmao. anyway i wanted to block this person anyway bc they acted like (to me) that they were the god of all yeehan takes and discourse etc etc and their condescending attitude and way people would suck their dick basically annoyed me so this was kind of the last straw.
5. worst discord server and why
yeehan main server bc it’s got too many people and so it falls into the usual fandom habit of if you don’t suck up to mods or aren’t friends with the Big Names (like the person i was talking about prev asks) you will fall by the wayside and no one will care about you and personally i hate that most of all :)
6. which ship fans are the most annoying?
phar////mercy & gen////cy are tied for me and the common denominator is i hate mercy and these fans are so up her fucking ass about how she can do no wrong that i just want to die. the weird white savior thing going on with gen////cy and the annoying knight in shining armor for delicate flower white woman going on in phar////mercy is exhausting.
i may be a mercy main bc i like her playstyle but every day i MOURN the black man mercy design we could’ve had but didn’t.
we could’ve had this fucking HUNK but NOOOOOO
Tumblr media
and UGH another bad take i saw was when the ovw art book came out (which i have sigh) and everyone was like BRO THE CONCEPT MERCY THO— i saw so many people saying that ugh well we already have baptiste we don’t need ANOTHER black healer and i’m like…. but inchresting how y’all don’t say that about having 3 white healers 🤨 I DIGRESS THO.
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
this is difficult bc most characters i dislike i already had a reason for disliking them, fandom just increased my rage 💀
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
gremlin dva my beloathed. stick in the mud hanzo my BELOATHED.
9. worst part of canon
already answered but the fact that we had to fight for so fucking long to get a black woman in overwatch. like bro y’all ain’t Shit. y’all added a fucking HAMSTER before a black woman and it SHOWS how little y’all care about black women im TIREDTTTT
10. worst part of fanon
already answered however u reminded me of how much dainty male wife hanzo that used to exist and i legitimately blocked that shit from my memory and now i’m retraumatized. so thanks. lmao. :)
11. number of fandom-related words you've filtered
i think just phar///mercy i can’t take it LMAO. but honestly not many only bc i do not engage with ovw fandom anymore
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
dva’s boyfriend (to me) daehyun and jack’s ex vincent. idk how much they count bc they aren’t really involved as much as, say emily is, side character wise but i think daehyun and dva’s relationship is extremely sweet and i’m so normal about them (i’m not they’re literally my otp for dva and i swear i’m the only one who ships it LMAO) and idk i’m a sucker for bittersweet exes so vincent holds a special place in my heart and lowkey ship him with jack more than the only other 76 ship worth mentioning. i don’t really have a reason for why anyone should like these characters like they deadass have like no content but EYE care them.
13. worst blorboficiation
worst character to blorbo: it’s a tie between moira and junkrat i hate both of them. but huge unpopular opinion i dislike all the junkers (yes including the fucking hamster). just lore wise i feel like we glossed over the entire part where they hate omnics for just existing etc etc (same thing with zarya but i don’t see as many people simp over her which is unsurprising) and like sure i can be looking too into it but the entire omnic side of overwatch’s shit feels too close to racism to me and i’m lowkey protective over just the concept of omnics in general. that being said i just can’t in good faith like any of the junkers+zarya for their open hostility about them and tbh the game just glossed over the outright hostility junkrat used to have towards zen he had some gnarly fucking lines that made me real uncomfortable tbh. and like the casual omnic-ism in the game does bother me too. reaper had some shit lines as well, zarya obvs etc. and like idk i’m black and sensitive and it rubbed me in a type of way. but this could also just be poor handling of a topic they aren’t equipped to handle the ramifications thereof so yknow. not expecting much but it bothers me how we just decided not to address it at all. i mean hell, torb’s isms were addressed with the bastion comic and their friendship so… idk why we can’t do the same with the rest of them or why they’re acting like that part of their character didn’t exist? and like i don’t mind when characters like jack or mercy for instance have lines towards zenyatta that are more about him being a monk or whatnot but the lines towards him being an omnic and not addressing it is just… eugh. BUT i’ve rambled enough about this moving on.
worst case of character that has been massacred by being blorboified: dva. dear god. please be normal about asian women for ONE minute challenge (impossible)
14. that one thing you see in fics all the time
hanzo and cole bonding over being on random parts of base and drinking as a form of bonding and tbh y’all are so correct for this.
15. that one thing you see in fanart all the time
my favorite is the cole and hanzo clothes swap Or putting any of the characters in everyday wear it’s really nice.
16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
kinda similar to what you said but cole being a bumbling himbo southern hick. like i’m sorry where the Fuck in his backstory did y’all get ANY of that are y’all okay.
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
visual kei hanzo. i’m SO BITTER that they gave kiriko a visual kei skin i’m SO BITTER.
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
bapweaver like they are literally perfect????? hello??????? did you miss the “us healing gentleman should stick together” line or?????? the mspec x mspec relationship??????? the fact that both of them are so goddamn handsome i’m frothing i Need to see them fuck or maybe be sandwiched between that ????? just me???? ok.
19. you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
mei. hear me out: she has a lot of mannerisms that remind me of my ex so i hated her out of principle also people who main her along with rein mains make me want to eat glass. however she’s grown on me a little so idk if this is healing or if overwatch has infected my brain.
20. part of canon you found tedious or boring
the reaper / moira storyline sorry it bores me 😬 like i’d rather focus on rebuilding overwatch and the underground vigilantes part. moira turning reaps into a bunch of cells doesn’t really intrigue me sorry. and tbh all of talon in general bores me like i feel like aside from reaps they all are just the “evil bc we wanna be” shit. like evil scientist? been there done that. the world must evolve through conflict is a new angle but it’s just a repacked i want power trip. like idk. i feel like talon’s goals are vague at best and stupid at worst.
21. part of canon you think is overhyped
kiriko and whatever is going on with her shit like she is a boring fucking character and like ashe added unnecessary excess information that does not solve any of the problems into one of my fave characters backstories and i’m annoyed by it.
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
the propensity for hanzo to be the main character but i’m extremely biased 🤷🏽‍♂️
23. ship you've unwillingly come around to
symmpharah actually. i started claiming to ship it bc i disliked phar///mercy and wanted to be like LOOK THERE ARE OTHER GOOD SHIPS!!!! but then when i thought about it i was like no wait actually that’s such a good idea. pharah and symm strike me as both autizzy (i think pharah is lower support needs/audhd while symm is autistic) and i think they compliment each other really well. their desire for rules and order and their own ideas of justice which i think pharah can help symm shape like zen has as well. they can talk about their special interests to each other (pharah: basketball, symm: architecture) and actually appreciate it. they’re also, and most importantly to me, EQUALS. their relationship feels like both of them contributing to it instead of just a hopeless crush/white knight/i would do everything for you nonsense. and i’m partial to the melanin x melanin they’re both so fucking pretty like power couple vibes STRONG.
24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse
diversity 💀💀 y’all mfs are so ANNOYING about it lmao. but this is not unusual for games 🙄
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
anytime people ask for better from the devs you get hundreds of people jumping down your throat about how you’re a piece of shit for asking and it’s like ??? lmao??

in which I get progressively angrier at the various tropes of atla fandom misogyny
tbh I think it would serve all of us to have a larger conversation about the specific ways misogyny manifests in this fandom, because I’ve seen a lot of people who characterize themselves as feminists, many of whom are women themselves, discuss the female characters of atla/lok in misogynistic ways, and people don’t talk about it enough.
disclaimer before I start: I’m not a woman, I’m an afab nonbinary person who is semi-closeted and thus often read as a woman. I’m speaking to things that I’ve seen that have made me uncomfy, but if any women (esp women existing along other axes of oppression, e.g. trans women, women of color, disabled women, etc) want to add onto this post, please do!
“This female character is a total badass but I’m not even a little bit interested in exploring her as a human being.”
I’ve seen a lot of people say of various female characters in atla/lok, “I love her! She’s such a badass!” now, this statement on its own isn’t misogynistic, but it represents a pretty pervasive form of misogyny that I’ve seen leveled in large part toward the canon female love interests of one or both of the members of a popular gay ship (*cough* zukka *cough*) I’m going to use Suki as an example of this because I see it with her most often, but it can honestly be applied to nearly every female character in atla/lok. Basically, people will say that they stan Suki, but when it comes time to engage with her as an actual character, they refuse to do it. I’ve seen meta after meta about Zuko’s redemption arc, but I so rarely see people engage with Suki on any level beyond “look at this cool fight scene!” and yeah, I love a cool Suki fight scene as much as anybody else, but I’m also interested in meta and headcanons and fics about who she is as a person, when she isn’t an accessory to Sokka’s development or doing something cool. of course, the material for this kind of engagement with Suki is scant considering she doesn’t have a canon backstory (yet) (don’t let me down Faith Erin Hicks counting on you girl) but with the way I’ve seen people in this fandom expand upon canon to flesh out male characters, I know y’all have it in you to do more with Suki, and with all the female characters, than you currently do. frankly, the most engagement I’ve seen with Suki in mainstream fandom is justifying either zukki (which again, is characterizing her in relation to male characters, one of whom she barely interacts with in canon) or one of the Suki wlw pairings. which brings me to--
“I conveniently ship this female character whose canon love interest is one of the members of my favorite non-canon ship with another female character! gay rights!”
now, I will admit, two of my favorite atla ships are yueki and mailee, and so I totally understand being interested in these characters’ dynamics, even if, as is the case with yueki, they’ve never interacted canonically. however, it becomes a problem for me when these ships are always in the background of a zukka fic. at some point, it becomes obvious that you like this ship because it gets either Zuko or Sokka’s female love interests out of the way, not because you actually think the characters would mesh well together. It’s bad form to dislike a female character because she gets in the way of your gay ship, so instead, you find another girl to pair her off with and call it a day. to be clear, I’m not saying that everybody who ships either mailee or yueki (or tysuki or maisuki or yumai or whatever other wlw rarepair involving Zuko or Sokka’s canon love interests) is nefariously trying to sideline a female character while acting publicly as if she’s is one of their faves--far from it--but it is noteworthy to me how difficult it is to find content that centers wlw ships, while it’s incredibly easy to find content that centers zukka in which mailee and/or yueki plays a background role.
also, notice how little traction wlw Katara ships gain in this fandom. when’s the last time you saw yuetara on your dash? there’s no reason for wlw Katara ships to gain traction in a fandom that is so focused on Zuko and Sokka getting together, bc she doesn’t present an immediate obstacle to that goal (at least, not an obstacle that can be overcome by pairing her up with a woman). if you are primarily interested in Zuko and Sokka’s relationship, and your queer readings of other female characters are motivated by a desire to get them out of the way for zukka, then Katara’s canon m/f relationship isn’t a threat to you, and thus, there’s no reason to read her as potentially queer. Or even, really, to think about her at all.
“Katara’s here but she’s not actually going to do anything, because deep down, I’m not interested in her as a person.”
the show has an enormous amount of textual evidence to support the claim that Sokka and Katara are integral parts of each other’s lives. so, she typically makes some kind of appearance in zukka content. sometimes, her presence in the story is as an actual character with layers and nuance, someone whom Sokka cares about and who cares about Sokka in return, but also has her own life and goals outside of her brother (or other male characters, for that matter.) sometimes, however, she’s just there because halfway through writing the author remembered that Sokka actually has a sister who’s a huge part of the show they’re writing fanfiction for, and then they proceed to show her having a meetcute with Aang or helping Sokka through an emotional problem, without expressing wants or desires outside of those characters. I’m honestly really surprised that I haven’t seen more people calling out the fact that so much of Katara’s personality in fanon revolves around her connections to men? she’s Aang’s girlfriend, she’s Sokka’s sister, she’s Zuko’s bestie. never mind that in canon she spends an enormous amount of time fighting against (anachronistic, Westernized) sexism to establish herself as a person in her own right, outside of these connections. and that in canon she has such interesting complex relationships with other female characters (e.g. Toph, Kanna, Hama, Korra if you want to write lok content) or that there are a plethora of characters with whom she could have interesting relationships with in fanon (Mai, Suki, Ty Lee, Yue, Smellerbee, and if you want to write lok content, Kya II, Lin, Asami, Senna, etc). to me, the lack of fandom material exploring Katara’s relationships with other women or with herself speak to a profound indifference to Katara as a character. I’m not saying you have to like Katara or include her in everything you write, but I am asking you to consider why you don’t find her interesting outside of her relationships with men.
“I hate Katara because she talks about her mother dying too often.”
this is something I’ve seen addressed by people far more qualified than I to address it, but I want to mention it here in part because when I asked people which fandom tropes they wanted me to talk about, this came up often, but also because I find it really disgusting that this is a thing that needs to be addressed at all. Y’all see a little girl who watched her mother be killed by the forces of an imperialist nation and say that she talks about it too much??? That is a formational, foundational event in a child’s life. Of course she’s going to talk about it. I’ve seen people say that she doesn’t talk about it that often, or that she only talks about it to connect with other victims of fn imperialism e.g. Jet and Haru, but frankly, she could speak about it every episode for no plot-significant reason whatsoever and I would still be angry to see people say she talks about it too much. And before you even bring up the Sokka comparison, people deal with grief in different ways. Sokka  repressed a lot of his grief/channeled it into being the “man” of his village because he knew that they would come for Katara next if he gave them the opportunity. he probably would talk about his mother more if a) he didn’t feel massive guilt at not being able to remember what she looked like, and b) he was allowed to be a child processing the loss of his mother instead of having to become a tiny adult when Hakoda had to leave to help fight the fn. And this gets into an intersection with fandom racism, in that white fans (esp white American fans) are incapable of relating to the structural trauma that both Sokka and Katara experience and thus can’t see the ways in which structural trauma colors every single aspect of both of their characters, leading them to flatten nuance and to have some really bad takes. And you know what, speaking of bad fandom takes--
“Shitting on Mai because she gets in the way of my favorite Zuko ship is actually totally okay because she’s ~abusive~”
y’all WHAT.
ok listen, I get not liking maiko. I didn’t like it when I first got into fandom, and later I realized that while bryke cannot write romance to save their lives, fans who like maiko sure can, so I changed my tune. but if you still don’t like it, that’s fine. no skin off my back.
what IS skin off my back is taking instances in which Mai had justified anger toward Zuko, and turning it into “Mai abused Zuko.” do you not realize how ridiculous you sound? this is another thing where I get so angry about it that I don’t know how useful my analysis is actually going to be, but I’ll do my best. numerous people have noted how analysis of Mai and Zuko’s breakup in “The Beach” or Mai being justifiably angry with him at Boiling Rock or her asking for FUCKING FRUIT in “Nightmares and Daydreams” that says that all of these events were her trying to gain control over him is....ahhh...lacking in reading comprehension, but I’d like to go a step further and talk about why y’all are so intent on taking down a girl who doesn’t show emotion in normative ways. obviously, there’s a “Zuko can do no wrong” aspect to Mai criticism (which is super weird considering how his whole arc is about how he can do lots of wrong and he has to atone for the wrong that he’s done--but that’s a separate post.) But I also see slandering Mai for not expressing her emotions normatively and not putting up with Zuko’s shit and slandering Katara for “talking about her mother too often” as two sides of the same coin. In both cases, a female character expresses emotions that make you, the viewer, uncomfortable, and so instead of attempting to understand where those emotions may have come from and why they might be manifesting the way they are, y’all just throw the whole character away. this is another instance of people in the fandom being fundamentally disinterested in engaging with the female characters of atla in a real way, except instead of shallowly “stanning” Mai, y’all hate her. so we get to this point where female characters are flattened into one of two things: perfect queens who can do no wrong, or bitches. and that’s not who they are. that’s not who anyone is. but while we as a fandom are pretty good at understanding b1 Zuko’s actions as layered and multifaceted even though he’s essentially an asshole then, few are willing to lend the same grace to any female character, least of all Mai.
and what’s funny is sometimes this trope will intersect with “I conveniently ship this female character whose canon love interest is one of the members of my favorite non-canon ship with another female character! gay rights!”, so you’ll have someone actively calling Mai toxic/problematic/abusive, and at the same time ship her with Ty Lee? make it make sense! but then again, maybe that’s happening because y’all are fundamentally disinterested in Ty Lee as a character too.
“I love Ty Lee so much that I’m going to treat her like an infantilized hypersexual airhead!”
there are so many things happening in y’alls characterization of Ty Lee that I struggled to synthesize it into one quippy section header. on one hand, you have the hypersexualization, and on the other hand, you have the infantilization, which just makes the hypersexualization that much worse.
(of course, sexualizing or hypersexualizing ANY atla character is really not the move, considering that these are child characters in a children’s show, but then again, that’s a separate post.)
now, I understand how, from a very, very surface reading of the text, you could come to the conclusion that Ty Lee is an uncomplicated bimbo. if you grew up on Western media the way I did, you’ll know that Ty Lee has a lot of the character traits we associate with bimbos: the form-fitting pink crop top, the general conventional attractiveness, the ditzy dialogue. but if you think about it for more than three seconds, you’ll understand that Ty Lee has spent her whole life walking a tightrope, trying to please Azula and the rest of the royal family while also staying true to herself. Ty Lee and Azula’s relationship is a really complex and interesting topic that I don’t really have time to explore at the moment given how long this post is, but I’d argue that Ty Lee’s constant, vocal  adulation is at least partially a product of learning to survive at court at an early age. Like Mai, she has been forced to regulate her emotions as a member of fn nobility, but unlike Mai, she also has six sisters who look exactly like her, so she has a motivation to be more peppy and more affectionate to stand out.
fandom does not do the work to understand Ty Lee. as is a theme with this post, fandom is actively disinterested in investigating female characters beyond a very surface level reading of them. Thus, fandom takes Ty Lee’s surface level qualities--her love of the color pink, her revealing standard outfit, and the fact that once she found a boy attractive and also once a lot of boys found her attractive--and they stretch this into “Ty Lee is basically Karen Smith from Mean Girls.” thus, Ty Lee is painted as a bimbo, or more specifically, as not smart, uncritically adoring of Azula (did y’all forget all the non-zukka bits of Boiling Rock?), and attractive to the point of hypersexualization. I saw somebody make a post that was like “I wish mailee was more popular but I’m also glad it isn’t because otherwise people would write it as Mai having to put up with her dumb gf” and honestly I have to agree!! this is one instance in which I’m glad that fandom doesn’t discuss one of my favorite characters that often because I hate the fanon interpretation of Ty Lee, I think it’s rooted in misogyny (particularly misogyny against East Asian women, which often takes the form of fetishizing them and viewing them only through a Western white male gaze)
(side note: here at army-of-mai-lovers, we stan bimbos. bimbos are fucking awesome. I personally don’t read Ty Lee as a bimbo, but if that’s you, that’s fucking awesome. keep doing what you’re doing, queen <3 or king or monarch, it’s 2021, anyone can be a bimbo, bitches <3)
“Toph can and will destroy everyone here with her bare hands because she’s a meathead who likes to murder people and that’s it!”
Toph is, and always has been, one of my favorite ATLA characters. My very first fic in fandom was about her, and she appears prominently in a lot of my other work as well. One thing that I am always struck by with Toph is how big a heart she has. She’s independent, yes, snarky, yes, but she cares about people--even the family that forced her to make herself smaller because they didn’t believe that their blind daughter could be powerful and strong. Her storyline is powerful and emotionally resonant, her bending is cool precisely because it’s based in a “wait and listen” approach instead of just smashing things indiscriminately, she’s great disabled rep, and overall one of the best characters in the show.
And in fandom, she gets flattened into “snarky murder child.”
So where does this come from? Well, as we all know, Toph was originally conceived of as a male character, and retained a lot of androgyny (or as the kids call it, Gender) when she was rewritten as a female character. There are a lot of cultural ideas about androgynous/butch women being violent, and people in fandom seem to connect that larger cultural narrative with some of Toph’s more violent moments in the show to create the meathead murder child trope, erasing her canon emotionality, softness, heart, and femininity in the process.
This is not to say that you shouldn’t write or characterize Toph as being violent or snarky at all ever, because yeah, Toph definitely did do Earth Rumbles a lot before joining the gaang, and yeah, Toph is definitely a sarcastic person who makes fun of her friends a lot. What I am saying is that people take these traits, sans the emotional logic, marry them to their conception of androgynous/butch women as violent/unemotional/uncaring, and thus create a caricature of Toph that is not at all up to snuff. When I see Toph as a side character in a fic (because yeah, Toph never gets to be a main character, because why would a fandom obsessed with one male character in particular ever make Toph a protagonist in her own right?) she’s making fun of people, killing people, pranking people, etc, etc. She’s never talking to people about her emotions, or palling around with her found family, or showing that she cares about her friends. Everything about her relationship with her parents, her disability, her relationship to Gender, and her love of her friends is shoved aside to focus on a version of Toph that is mean and uncaring because people have gotten it into their heads that androgynous/butch women are mean and uncaring.
again, we see a female character who does not emote normatively or in a way that makes you, the viewer, comfortable, and so you warp her character until she’s completely unrecognizable and flat. and for what?
Azula
no, I didn’t come up with a snappy name for this section, mainly because fanon interpretations of Azula and my own feelings toward the character are...complicated. I know there were some people who wanted me to write about Azula and the intersection of misogyny and ableism in fanon interpretations of her character, but I don’t think I can deliver on that because I personally am in a period of transition with how I see Azula. that is to say, while I still like her and believe that she can be redeemed, there is a lot of merit to disliking her. the whole point of this post is that the female characters of ATLA are complex people whom the fandom flattens into stereotypes that don’t hold up to scrutiny, or dislike for reasons that don’t make sense. Azula, however, is a different case. the rise of Azula defenders and Azula stans has led to this sentiment that Azula is a 14 y/o abuse victim who shouldn’t be held accountable for her actions. it seems to me that people are reacting to a long, horrible legacy of male ATLA fans armchair diagnosing Azula with various personality disorders (and suggesting that people with those personality disorders are inherently monstrous and unlovable which ahhhh....yikes) and then saying that those personality disorders make her unlovable, which is quite obviously bad. and hey, I get loving a character that everyone else hates and maybe getting so swept up in that love that you forget that your fave is complicated and has made some unsavory choices. it sucks that fanon takes these well-written, complex villains/antiheroes and turns them into monsters with no critical thought whatsoever. but the attitude among Azula stans that her redemption shouldn’t be hard, that her being a child excuses all of the bad things that she’s done, that she is owed redemption....all of that rubs me the wrong way. I might make another post about this in the future that discusses this in more depth, but as it stands now: while I understand that there is a legacy of misogynistic, ableist, unnuanced takes on Azula, the backlash to that does not take into account the people she hurt or the fact that in ATLA she does not make the choice to pursue redemption. and yes, Zuko had help in making that choice that Azula didn’t, and yes, Azula is a victim of abuse, but in a show about children who have gone through untold horrors and still work to better the lives of the people around them, that is not enough for me to uncritically stan her.
Conclusion
misogyny in this fandom runs rampant. while there are some tropes of fandom misogyny that are well-documented and have been debunked numerous times, there are other, subtler forms of misogyny that as far as I know have gone completely unchecked.
what I find so interesting about misogyny in atla fandom is that it’s clear that it’s perpetrated by people who are aware of fandom misogyny who are actively trying not to be misogynistic. when I first joined atla fandom last summer, memes about how zukka fandom was better than every other fandom because they didn’t hate the female characters who got in the way of their gay ship were extremely prevalent, and there was this sense that *this* fandom was going to model respectful, fun, feminist online fandom. not all of the topes I’ve outlined are exclusive to or even largely utilized in zukka fandom, but a lot of them are. I’ve been in and out of fandom since I was eleven years old, and most of the fandom spaces I’ve been in have been majority-female, and all of them have been incredibly misogynistic. and I always want to know why. why, in these communities created in large part by women, in large part for women, does misogyny run wild? what I realize now is that there’s never going to be a one-size fits all answer to that question. what’s true for 1D fandom on Wattpad in 2012 is absolutely not true for atla fandom on tumblr in 2021. the answers that I’ve cobbled together for previous fandoms don’t work here.
so, why is atla fandom like this? why did the dream of a feminist fandom almost entirely focused on the romantic relationship between two male characters fall apart? honestly, I think the notion that zukka fandom ever was this way was horrifically ignorant to begin with. from my very first moment in the fandom, I was seeing racism, widespread sexualization of minors, and yes, misogyny. these aspects of the fandom weren’t talked about as much as the crocverse or other, much more fun aspects. further, atla (specifically zukka) fandom misogyny often doesn’t look like the fandom misogyny we’ve become familiar with from like, Sherlock fandom or what have you. for the most part, people don’t actively hate Suki, they just “stan” without actually caring about her. they hate Mai because they believe in treating male victims of abuse equally. they’re not characterizing Toph poorly, they’re writing her as a “strong woman.” in short, people are misogynistic, and then invoke a shallow, incomplete interpretation of feminist theory to shield themselves from accusations of misogyny. it’s not unlike the way some people will invoke a shallow, incomplete interpretation of critical race theory to shield themselves from accusations of racism, or how they’ll talk about “freedom of speech” and “the suppression of women’s sexuality” to justify sexualizing minors. the performance of feminism and antiracism is what’s important, not the actual practice.
if you’ve made it this far, first off, hi, thanks so much for reading, I know this was a lot. second, I would seriously encourage you to be aware of these fandom tropes and to call them out when you see them. elevate the voices of fans who do the work of bringing the female characters of atla to life. invest in the wlw ships in this fandom. drop a kudos and a comment on a rangshi fic (please, drop a kudos and a comment on a rangshi fic). read some yuetara. let’s all be honest about where we are now, and try to do better in the future. I believe in us.

Listen… people be hating Naoya because he’s a misogynist yet liking characters like Sukuna that want to rape and kill women… Geto, that committed Genocide and Toji that killed the star vessel that was a kid and attacked a bunch teens.. the irony is real and alive and the lack of self awareness is crazy good. I have never seen more hate for Naoya stans and some people even call Naoya stans mentally ill in a derogatory way as if they’re any better themselves. The hate is because of the performative individuals that can’t understand that fiction does not equal reality yet are still majorly hypocritical themselves. I’m okay with people disliking him but I hate those “my morals are better” silliness. “Your great amazing morals” backseat when it comes to other charas bro, be consistent.
Anyways, I love your blog so much because you’re one of those people that doesn’t take things too seriously. Your blog has made me like him a lot compared to my initial indifference for him. He’s not one of my favorites yet you did a great job that I look forward to your content regardless.
i totally see your point 🧐 i am also a sukuna and geto simp (with the occassional simping for the iconic dilf 🤤) but i do agree that they’ve done far worse compared to naoya being a little shit 👀 not to excuse his behavior tho bcos i do not condone it irl but yeah, he’s not even the most morally corrupt character. in my perception, its just that most of the fandom thinks as long as a character is mostly hated, then the minority who DO like him are suddenly messed in the head. the amount of asks i’ve gotten telling me to get therapy or ‘stan someone better’ is insane 🤯 true that tho, fiction is not the same as reality and which 2d lines i simp for does not necessarily reflect myself as a person and my beliefs; it’s not that serious. i agree, i perfectly respect that naoya is not everyone’s cup of tea and people would dislike him (which is valid) but i really don’t understand why people have to bring in the fact they apparently stand on a mighty high horse that they don’t like a 2d guy who is sexist...but plot twist, they like a 2d guy who is a mass murderer! again, that’s them and people can like who they like, i just don’t like it when people come at me for that because apparently all evil deeds and traits of one’s faves are okay and “he’s not real” as long as it’s someone they like. but when another evil character is not the ones they like? it’s a diff thing for them!
and aww thank you so much 🥺 its not easy being a naoya simp and even with the hate i receive for it, i am very happy as his stan bcos its really not that serious. i only came here to tumblr to be silly and scream over 2d cock so idk why people take it too seriously 😔 and aaaa thanks sm for the kind words, i’m glad my blog has made you see naoya a lil bit diff 🥺💕 i do love him a lot and he makes me happy so i’ll keep being his simp! i originally just wanted to keep quiet over this discourse but the hate naoya stans receive is just shocking at this point and i’m not into that negativity so i hope all naoya stans (or at least anyone who respects naoya stans and all other stans of diff characters) are very much free and welcome here! you can freely fuck your evil fave here!

@protectanaflores You call me a misogynist but you’re the one who sent me a string of messages calling me “dumb” “a piece of shit” because I don’t agree with your opinion on a fictional character.
And if you actually read my post, instead of skimming it, you’d see that my point wasn’t that Taylor is an even worse person because she became a reporter for her dad (in fact that would be sweet, assuming he is innocent) the problem, when this happened to her as a child, everyone knew about it (ofc because reporters reported it) people at her school, her teachers, other people she knew, all knew what was going on, all knew about her grief, I can’t imagine the pain she felt of not only going through her mum’s death and her dad going to jail for supposedly killing her but also to not be able to escape through her life at school or any extracurricular activity because this event was so publicized. But here comes Bobby, who is adamant on not giving Taylor personal information but she without his consent is recording him while high as he grieves his daughter. Taylor kelly, instead of understanding his grief, (as she went through something similar) and not wanting someone else’s grief to be a “Juicy Headline” like hers was, she tries to get it published because it would propel her career wise and no I’m not speculating on this, she literally tells Buck that at the end of the episode. If a character knows pain and chooses to inflict it on others instead of breaking the cycle, then to me, that makes them an unlikeable character.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t like Taylor, you can like whoever you want but I don’t see how that gives you the right to come into my PMs when I have never interacted with you in my life and then send me a string of insults and false claims. Also disliking one female character does not make someone misogynistic. And I don’t dislike her because of Buddie. I like Ali and I’m chill with Abby (tho she did Buck dirty not going to lie), although I did notice that even people who posted pro Ali and and pro Abby stuff were still called “misogynistic” by you so this leads me to assume that misogyny isn’t the real issue for you, it’s that people don’t like your fave and you’re just falsely calling out people for their misogyny so that you and your opinions appear to be morally superior.
The whole “fetishist” comment is unreal. 1) You don’t know me. Why are you assuming that I’m straight? Why are you assuming that most of the people who watch the show are straight? You don’t think that LGBTQ+ men, women and non binary people want buddie to happen because they see themselves in one or both of the characters and want that representation? Have you ever thought that they may ship them because they love the idea of 2 people who have had their fair share of struggle, heartbreak and trauma finding love and peace with each other? And there shouldn’t be a limit to how many gay couples there are in the show, Henren, Mavid and Buddie should be able to exist. And just because someone is straight and they ship a gay couple, it doesn’t make them a fetishist. They may like their dynamic, their chemistry or they may see a possible story with the 2 characters.
Now, everyone knows how much Maddie and Buck mean to each other. They have a beautiful relationship, and it has been explicitly explored in canon many times, so I didn’t feel that I needed to acknowledge how much Maddie means to Buck because we already know she means the world to him. And yes, he is definitely depressed because Maddie and Chim left but in my opinion, I feel like even if you’re going through a hard time, being surrounded and comforted by your loved ones can bring slight relief. But I don’t see Taylor bringing him any relief (in this case that is not her fault, they just aren’t what each other needs). Just like you can have the opinion that Buck and Taylor are compatible, I can have the opinion that they’re not because that’s how opinions work. I don’t see how harassing people is going to change their minds, if you want to be persuasive, maybe you should back your claims with reasons and proof?
Anyway, so I posted this because you seem to feel so powerful sending people hateful private messages online and them not being able to reply to them because you blocked them. So I decided to reply to you anyway.

I only care about Sarada because she's Sakura's daughter. I don't care about Sasuke or "Sauce" as you call him. I stopped caring about him a long time ago. I also only care about Hima 🌻.
We live in a society where I'm tired of seeing the same stories of women revolving around the men they're into. It's so boring jeez. I need new anime recommendations.
Correct. Sarada and Hima best girls in new gen. Everything else is poopoo. Sauce is the biggest poopoo
Maybe watch FMAB, Code Geass, One piece!!!!!, Yu Yu Hakusho!!! (i haven't finished it but I'll love it so much, JJk is also pretty great. *screams from the top of her lungs* WATCH FRUITS BASKET GODDAMIT. Mob Psycho 100!!!!! HxH (personal fave) ahhh what else. Or maybe watch a show that isn't anime xD try sitcoms, or tv series, movies cartoons!!! Miraculous Ladybug, steven Universe, Owl House, Catradora (havent watched it but im planning on it), Adventure time xD and a shit ton more. Try books!!! Explore!!!!
I guess, romance is the genre that caters to most women so i think they profitted out of that. Like with the usual highschool romcom stories always stars female characters while action stuff stars men. they dont call it "shoujo" or "shounen" for nothing
Tbh i don't have that big of a problem with female characters having a crush or whatever, the problem that i dislike is when the author (especially if its a dude) executes it so poorly that it looks like their entire personality just revolved around male chara
Istg I read somewhere that Kishi wrote 12 year old Sakura the way he interpreted ALL women acted like :||
Kishi.... tell me that youre misogynistic without telling me that youre misogynistic....

Unpopular Opinion: The stans will always understand the character better than the antis.
*I’m using this definition of stan: an overzealous or obsessive fan
In the Game of Thrones/asoiaf fandom, the criticism that is always leveled at fans is that they don’t actually understand the character they are stanning. I suppose the logic there is that their love for the character blinds them to the character’s flaws. I think this is more a case of tumblr culture and fans constantly being called upon to defend their favorite character. If you are constantly defending your character, you will obviously be highlighting the good more than the bad- especially against people who hate the character and seem determined to demonize the character and their fans.
I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in both the personal/fan blog side of things and also the RP blog side of things. And though the RP side of fandom has serious issues with personal drama and callouts etc. One thing they are really excellent about is respecting one another’s love for their characters. Even if it’s a character they dislike. I’ve even seen quite a lot of RP writers change their opinion about a character they initially disliked because of the insight that one of their writing partners provided about those characters. It makes sense that people should be more understanding of each other’s faves in RP, because if they lacked this understanding, it would to be very challenging to find writing partners. Whereas on the fan/personal blogs, you can get along quite well just talking to other fans of your fave and not interacting with fans of other characters at all. It’s more tribal in that way by design. RPing on tumblr is how I began to truly appreciate how interesting and amazing other asoiaf characters are besides Theon.
Additionally, because there is not so much anti vs stan culture in the asoiaf RPC, you get to read lots of excellent metas written by your fellow writers- a lot of them specifically about the characters’ flaws and insightful explanations about them. Which indicates to me that stans on personal/ fan blogs aren’t ignoring their fave’s flaws so much as they are reacting to an environment where they need to primarily defend their faves. It’s almost like on the fan/personal blogs we have to get a goddamn law degree in defending Theon Greyjoy, or Sansa Stark, or Daenerys Targaryen or whatever character you are accused of being a “racist, misogynistic, xenophobic piece of shit” for stanning.
But it’s not just that stans know their fave’s weaknesses as well as their strengths, stans are also the most knowledgeable about their faves by virtue of their very obsession with them. The stans are the ones who are constantly reading and rereading their fave’s chapters, rewatching their fave’s scenes, constantly analyzing and trying to get inside their fave’s heads to create metas, art, fanfictions... like, how can you possibly stand there and say that this kind of fan misunderstands their favorite character? Have you read and reread their chapters? Memorized their lines? psycho analyzed them in this manner?
Now, I know it is true that some antis have done this as well. They have done a similar amount of research and a similar amount of obsessing about the characters they hate. But I would bet not quite as much as the stans. And the research the antis do put in is done with a specific goal in mind. The goal is usually something like, “I’m trying to prove through a close reading of the text that this character is problematic so I can explain why it is wrong for people to stan them.” And as such, in their reads and rereads, watches and rewatches, they are lacking something that prevents them from understanding the character the way in which the obsessive fan does. Empathy.
Empathy is defined as: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another. What the fans of a character have, that a hater of a character doesn’t, is a fuller understanding of their motivations, strengths, flaws, and arc through their empathy for that character. Both the fan and the anti both have the ability to intellectually analyze the character but only the fans have the added edge of empathy which provides more understanding.
This is why I will always trust the fans when they say their character was behaving ooc or if their arc was ruined. Because even if I might not be a stan of that character, I put myself in the fans shoes. For example, I can imagine how it would feel if D&D had decided to subvert our expectations with Theon- not by killing him off for redemption but in making him revert again before killing him. Even though most Theon fans think his identity and redemption arcs would have been immensely more powerful had he survived. It still could have been worst than what we got.
What if they had the Night King trigger Theon’s PTSD and he tried to abandon Bran, only to die as a coward. It’s obvious to me that it would be a completely ludicrous ending for him- even more terrible than killing him for redemption. But I know that many Theon haters would say that it was inevitable and the only ending that could have been possible. They would say “Theon has always been a coward,” etc. They might see the “tragedy” in him struggling to overcome his “cowardice” but they would ultimately see it as a correct outcome. The Theon fans would know this is not true. They would know how he consistently faced down all his fears in spite of his torture and PTSD. They would know that cowardice should not be confused with PTSD (just as mental illness should not be confused with evilness.) They would know all of the intricate details of Theon’s rising again and survival symbolism. In short, we would know that was a bullshit ending that went against his arc and everything his character is and what his character represented. And we would have to keep hearing how we did not understand his arc- how we were not “paying attention.” All our understanding of Theon would be dismissed because we were his “stans.” But, that doesn’t make any sort of logical sense at all.
So I guess what I am saying is, long live stans and long live empathy. Because I honestly believe without empathy, you are limited in your understanding of most things in life.

this is a weird ask but here goes. i'm not a peter parker fan - he's great in the comics but mcu peter isn't really a character i enjoy. i know you're not so much of a pepper fan (which is fine, i like her but everyone can have their own opinions) but i know there are some people in this fandom who don't think that's the case - like some of the asks you've got regarding pepper. there's so much pressure to fit in with everyone's opinions and i admire that you haven't. what are your thoughts?
For me, honestly, I hate fandom policing. Hate it with a passion. People saying who/what you should and shouldn’t like, people bullying and harassing people for liking certain ships or NOT liking certain ships,,,, it’s all just such idiocy to me. Sometimes u don’t need a Woke Reason to not like a character. Sometimes u just don’t vibe w them. Something that irritates me HUGELY in fandom is how fans of ships and people will do EVERYTHING in their power to turn those who don’t like what they like into bigots or racists or sexists or whatever, simply because they don’t appreciate their faves enough and it makes them bitter lol. In reality, it’s... just.... not that fucking deep. At All. I’ve had literally dozens of anons and even previous mutuals calling me misogynistic for disliking/ being ambivalent toward pepper or vageuing me abt being ‘dissappointed in me for not seeing my own internalised misogyny’ (yes this was said by a mutual lmfao),,, and I never fucking understood why. A) it only lessons the seriousness of the statement meaning less people will care when there is ACTUAL misogyny present, and b) it just makes you look fucking ridiculous. ‘If you don’t like this female character you’re automatically sexist! i don’t make the rules sweetie!’ like. Well u quite clearly do lmao.
Like.... right now My Stan Brain is going ‘GIRL HOW THE HELL DON’T U LIKE PETER HE’S THE BEST BOY IN THE WORLD’ but my rational brain is just... chill. Aight. You do you? Some people just don’t ever find appeal in characters. That’s whatever. And some people will want different things in the plot, because their priorities are different. For instance, wanting Bucky to be the next captain america is, to me, dumb-- but to a bucky stan who’s read some comics that include bucky!cap, I guess it’s a valid thing to want! But the amount of posts ive seen where people declare ANYONE who wants buckycap to be a ‘blatant racist’ is just.... boggling. Like??? Let people have different opinions/ desires! That’s the whole point of fandom! you create what you wanna see babey! I do wonder whether some people on here ever go outside and interact w the real world and have actual convos with people who have different beliefs/ opinions/ political views lol. Do you just refuse to communicate with anyone who disagrees with you? Are you so high and mighty and up your own arse that you genuinely believe you have the right to decide whether someone’s character preference/ plot preference makes their entire personality bigoted? just fucking go outside and have a conversation with someone who isn’t on Woke Twitter for once. You will probably learn A LOT about sharing space w other people

honestly one of the main reasons why inoue becomes so unlikeable is the fact that the narrative and her fandom baby her at any and every turn. like the uwu princess uwu act is so. boring. to the point that its intolerable. that scene w/rangaku was already annoying cuz like who asked her but the fact that ih translators purposefully mistranslated it... like your princess is irrelevnet! let her grow by understanding that!!!
She is so flawed, she does so many things that are not ok, uwu princess my ass, but still no one can say anything about her bc “no u just hate her!” I love how I can talk s*it about Renjo and others, analize anything I want and freely talk about it and no one bat an eye, bc they know I’m just sharing an opinon, making fun of them and so on and it’s still clear I don’t hate any of them, Ino/ue tho? No one can say anything otherwise you are a misogynist and so on, it’s unberable.
Don’t even let me start on the IH translators...by doing that they basically clearly showed, how they didn’t like the actual REAL content, not for their uwu princess, not for their ship, not for IR, since they had to change it to their liking, that is degrading IR bond and upgrading the IH non exsistent one, like changing the things your fave character and ship gets? How more lower can you get? You don’t even like the ship don’t you?
Also seeing all these characters in the manga baby her all the damn time was annoying bc damn, call her out on her sh*t, maybe? That’s why so many liked UH bc Ulquiorra didn’t baby her and look what happened, she slaps him, she confronts him, she connects with him, see the difference? Having all these other characters baby her and condone all her shit all the time, did nothing to her, aside from making her even more stagnant and disliked but that’s Ku/bo for you, couldn’t have a female character actually grow up now could he?

Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions, don’t cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
Stargate SG-1
Star Trek: Voyager
Teen Wolf
House, MD
Xena: Warrior Princess
1. Who is your favourite character in 2?
I don’t dislike anyone on Voyager, which is rare for me. I give Neelix a lot of shit, but I do actually like him. A little. :) When I was a kid, Tom Paris was my fave, probably because he was a Gary Stu who never got called out as a Gary Stu, and that appealed to me in middle school oop. As an adult, tho, I love Seven of Nine. She probably has the most character development of anyone on the show. Harry is second, but poor guy never got promoted. Not his fault, but it stunted some of his potential development ;_; So, I’m gonna say Seven of Nine.
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?
Rodney McKay. I was so glad when they shipped his annoying ass off to Atlantis. I know the writers were presenting his constant misogynistic harassment of Sam as “humorous,” but it really wasn’t. Sam deserved better.
3. What is your favourite episode of 4?
Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh. God. Ummm....this list is way too long. Since it’s been a really long time since I bothered to remember individual House episode names, I can only describe the episode. It’s in the show’s final season when Shit’s Getting Real, and the writers are finally like “lol fuck it” and wrote Wilson sobbing to House, “I need you to tell me that you love me!” Suddenly, all of that subtext from over the years became canon. The little jokes, the winks and nods, they all paid off in the end. I remember being FLOORED that a network show just Did That. I’m just sad that Wilson had to be literally dying before we got it.
4. What is your favourite season of 5?
Again, it’s been a VERY long time since my memory needed to be this sharp for an old show, but I’m going to say all of the seasons EXCEPT for the last one. It was all over the place, and then Xena just fukkin dies. I get that it was a noble sacrifice, but why couldn’t Xena and Gabrielle live happily ever after? Gabby becomes a famous bard, Xena opens a dojo or something, they get married, do a lil farming on the side, boom. Done. Happy ending. But nooooo....
5. Who is your favourite couple in 3?
Season 5 was completely deleted from my memory through a very complicated and delicate brain operation I never told y’all about it. So it’s still Sciles. Feels good, man. :)
6. Who is your favourite couple in 2?
B’Elanna and Tom. But if I could picked a polyship, it’d be B’Elanna/Tom/Harry. 👀
7. What is your favourite episode of 1?
"Abyss” is almost always at the top of my list, but “Orpheus” is damn good, too. I’m picking both of those, and you can’t stop me.
8. What is your favourite episode of 5?
“The Bitter Suite!” It’s a really fun episode. And I remembered the name of it. :)
9. What is your favourite season of 2?
Probably season 4.
10. How long have you watched 1?
I started watching in season 3. SG-1 was still on Showtime, and aired on Friday nights. I usually had football games to attend (I was in marching band), so I’d set up the VCR to tape the show, and I’d watch it when I got home. My first full SG-1 ep was “Legacy.” I caught up with the first two seasons in syndication, and I was all caught up by the time season 5 came around.
11. How did you become interested in 3?
I read some Big Wolf on Campus fanfic that crossed over with Teen Wolf. So I decided to watch Teen Wolf to see what all the fuss was about. I’m not going to go into details, but the fic I read wildly mischaracterized the show. I’m glad I checked it out for myself. I ended up loving Scott McCall so much, in spite of that stupid fic.
12. Who is your favourite actor in 4?
Robert Sean Leonard.
13. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?
Yeah, I’m gonna echo Divvy here and just say, “Fuck you” to this question lol
14. Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3 ?
SG1 literally aired over 100 more episodes that Teen Wolf, so um, math.
15. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
A dying patient of the week who watches all these doctors hash out their personal drama over my deathbed while I collect all the tea they’re recklessly spilling, and then I get cured at the last second from a stupid disease I got from eating cat litter or something. Don’t ask why I was eating cat litter. That’s not for House’s team to decide, which is why I didn’t immediately tell anyone I ate cat litter when I was first admitted. All I know is that at least six of those doctors are fucking each other, one is on meth, and another one definitely killed a guy on purpose.
16. Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?
Teen Wolf and House? Sure. Melissa transfers to New Jersey, Scott eventually follows her since a couple of his pack members are already on the east coast after they all graduate high school and deal with the bounty hunter mess. Scott decides to go to med school (some of his vet school credits might transfer, who knows), and he ends up at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. He only sees House in the halls, because I don’t want Actual Ray of Sunshine Scott McCall coming in direct contact with House. He hangs out with the ducklings, tho. And he does rounds with Wilson, who takes a huge liking to him and his ability to literally make patients feel better just by holding their hand...ohhh, this could be a fun sandbox to play in. I just might...eat...some sand...
17. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple?
Jack and Maybourne. I SAID IT! Oh, and Daniel/Martouf because I shipped it when I was in like 8th grade lmao. Everything else I’m thinking, like Sam/Janet, Daniel/Teal’c, Jack/Daniel, Sam/Martouf...none of those are that unlikely. Aside from the dead people, but y’know.
18. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?
Let’s be honest; the writing on both Teen Wolf and Xena was never anything to get excited over. Huge plot holes, inconsistent characterization, incoherent plots, they all pretty much made up the overall experience of watching these shows. But I didn’t watch for that stuff. I just liked fun stories and nice characters. I don’t care if they didn’t make sense. Xena jumps 10 feet straight up in the air and somersaults through an open window while catching her chakram mid flip? Fantastic! Everyone in Beacon Hills suddenly becomes broke af and are struggling to pay bills because it serves the plot for one season and one season only? Great! Gabrielle gives birth to an evil doppelganger? @thecicadasong yeah i havent actually had like, Anons trying to get fresh w/ me about what i Should be drawing (i think ive gotten anon hate like, twice? once for passing along a tweet abt respecting homeless people, another time i have No idea why they were trying to roast me but they were also...weirdly bad at it) but the very rare occasions someone’s tried to tell me i should be drawing different stuff for whatever reason Stick With Me b/c i’m often still steamed abt shit that mightve happened years back but it was THAT annoying lmfao & i reaaally hate when ppl get patronizing &/or when i can tell they’re acting like whatever angle they’re taking is going over my head or they think i’m clueless & i can’t even tell they see me that way lol and i’m like, oh my god i mean it doesn’t make me concerned if i Only Appreciate Boys b/c they’re mostly who i draw b/c yknow......my drawing corner is some rando over here just entertaining myself & Xpressing myself. and a real limited amt of my Interests = the ones im able/interested enough in to draw, & then i tend to wanna draw them a million times lmao....it’s not necessarily the One Unfiltered Reflection of all my interests and all the characters i like, cuz it’s not the only way i think abt shit and express things, & if somebody thinks that my Portfolio not being >50% Girls means that it’s b/c i’ve totally hated girls all along.....that’d be their prerogative i guess. also good lord but that’d be a bad litmus test anyways like.......alllll the misogynist dude artists who draw plenty of ~female characters~ like Yikes City ahhhhh god thats such a fucking cursed realm like. the people so sexist they should be banned from depicting girls and women in any medium. and banned in general God Anyways And Yeah like. the terrible relationships thing too.........like really, this is what you think is appealing???? its too clear sometimes when some man writing this kind of stuff has NO real idea how to think of a woman as an actual person and if they’re trying to write from that perspective it’s like “oh, let’s throw in a ‘smh boys are so stupid and sexist’ thought to realistically depict what it must be like to experience misogyny” and “something about a bra idk” and then call it a day, and if they’re trying to write Romance it’s just like....this Incredible Love that’s truly out of nowhere and they never bother explaining what sustains this, or they decide that the reason bitches liked pride & prejudice is totally because she thought he was a jerk and they fought but then it was like wait nvm we’re in love, right?? and they make that into like, some dude being able to be a total asshole and a really detrimental force in some girl’s life and somehow this Intensity can just be translated into Romantic Intensity no problem, it’s fine that like, they’re not even friends and who knows how to believe they can just get along in regular life and the guy is probably super disrespectful and diminishes her but whatever its fine All Of This And More.....there are so many terrible and annoying ways they do m/f relationships and it’s Really easy to just make it decently written!!! i mean of course sometimes there’s m/f ships that i think are tolerably written and i don’t hate it but also don’t particularly care one way or another but a small / hetero-leaning fandom will like Never Shut Up About It and it’s like ok please shut up about it......i mean really i definitely don’t ever go into any new piece of media expecting to give a shit about any Guy Girl couple. it was a pleasant but total surprise that i really like jeremy/christine (which is not me disavowing the nb lesbian jeremy hc by any means lol) and it was NOT complicated why!!! really in fact a couple of the biggest reasons i found it Especially Good is like, ten seconds in total lmao and it’s “jeremy and christine cracking up by squawking at each other on the couch” and “jeremy doing that Ecstatic Stimming Twirl after kissing christine for 0.003 seconds” lmao.....like!!!! consider showing that the characters can actually have genuine fun interacting with each other for longer than five seconds!!!! give us a single reason why they’d be drawn to each other As People!!! it’s notttt thaaaat harrrrrd aaaaaaaaaA THE WEIRD CHARACTERS yeah i love a true Quirky character and not in the like.....bad clichéd quirky way but like. just someone who’s weird!! the nerdy awkward guys who manifest this by like....maybe being a tiny bit socially clumsy are like, boring and whatever a dime a dozen. but when people are funky and in a sort of fun way and it’s genuinely part of how they interact with others....it’s real relatable lmao i don’t have any very Weird Persona at this point but back in the day i did a bit moreso b/c like, firstly interacting w ppl tended to make me Nervous so it’s like ah hell i’ll do a bit. and then also there’s the classic “well i have this Weirdness abt me that i can’t turn off that ppl seem to dislike, so i’ll put on this extra layer of weirdness that i can try to be vaguely entertaining with.” and then you aren’t popular at all still lol but at least you’ve got your niche amongst whoever does actually like you.....Weird Quirky Guys characters are fun and like, it’s funny that nato of the black suits is Like That in terms of being a lil weirdo who just kind of does his thing in his corner and might Say Something About Anything Apropos Of Nothing as his conversational style and he’s apparently that superlative student type but doesnt seem to actually give a shit and just has his specific interest and depression.......it’s like oh jeez!!! relatable lmao!!! everyone who has a kind of Veneer of communicating a bit erratically and maybe just always throwing out random shit when interacting with others to hope something sticks......but also the strangeness doesn’t even have to be at all performative b/c it’s rarer but super fun when there’s characters who do have that kind of more inherent weirdness that they can’t turn off that really puts people off despite like....them not really doing anything lol....now THAT’S what i call A Timeless Mood it’s funny lmao like i totally have clear Character Types and i always go for those ppl on the same general wavelength as me but it can be a bit Unpredictable and nuanced which ones will actually be adopted into the faves category......like naturally i go for the un-cool passionate excitable types but if someone’s real like, mad energetic or demanding/loud im like oops you lost me. i like people who like to / want to Socialize / have relationships but sometimes if they’re too outgoing / have that natural success at it all / are obv free of anxiety im like, again, you’ve lost me. you truly never know!! only the Most relatable can survive!! one that might seem like they should be a fave on paper might super annoy me lol or just generate Zero interest.......it’s nice to be surprised by which characters really strike a chord lol

“hate the fictional character of Mary Watson SO MUCH” - I mean.... she shot the title character and wasn’t even sorry, lied to her husband literally the whole time they knew each other, abandoned him with a child for selfish reasons.... is that enough for you? Yeah we’re not going to apologize for this one
“projected it onto AA, [etc, etc]” So literally, most of the johnlockers I know are super gay for Amanda Abbington lmao. As for the ones who harass her on twitter, that shit’s not okay and you can’t say “the jlockers” as if we all participated in that. Plus, considering how many of you vehemently hate Martin Freeman, you can’t convince me some of you wouldn’t harass him if he has social media.
“majority of them have vaginas” Lol? Do I even need to comment on this?
“HATE ALL THE WOMEN IN BBC SHERLOCK [etc]” Okay let’s see about this, shall we?
Mrs. Hudson - boss ass bitch 💯👌😎
Mary Watson - see above
Molly Hooper - So not shipping her with Sherlock = we hate her.  Wanting something for a female character other than banging the male lead = misogyny.... got it. Plus, we’re the ones who are hoping for her storyline to eventually NOT revolve all around Sherlock. Maybe take a look in the mirror and compare what we want for her to what you guys want.
Irene Adler - Johnlockers for the most part like her a lot. There’s a bunch of us who have Sherlock/Irene as our broTP. Plus, I’ve only ever seen Johnlockers calling out Moftiss for their butchery of her character, and taking away so many of the things that made her great in the books. If you guys are all about female empowerment, why have ya’ll slept on this issue?
Sally Donovan - not discussed much in either side of the fandom... but from what I’ve seen, a lot of johnlockers hoped for either a backstory or more relationship development between her and Sherlock
Janine - Johnlockers very much enjoyed her presence on the show and hoped to see more of her in s4. Whether from her new friendship with Sherlock or actual plot reasons. You Sherl0llains on the other hand just felt threatened by her because you only saw her as a love interest getting in Molly’s way... who’s the misogynist again?
DI Hopkins - Johnlockers were really looking forward to more than 2.5 seconds of screen time for her in s4... don’t know how you could have missed all that hype on our side of the fandom considering how often you stalk our blogs
Euros Holmes - ....... a literal rapist and villain who killed a child and tried to kill multiple people close to Sherlock. To be frank, if she doesn’t make you sick, and you try to headcanon into your ‘uwu fun family times,’ you need to get your head checked and sort out how you define a “strong female character”
Sooo... looks like there are only two people on this whole list who Johnlockers (generally speaking) strongly dislike. And both of them have attempted to kill at least one of our main characters, so again, not going to apologize for that.
I think the idea Sherl0llians have that we “hate the women of BBC Sherlock” boils down to one thing: They can't wrap their heads around the fact that we’re able to enjoy female characters without shipping them.
And when they say we ‘hate all the women,’ they’re mostly talking about Molly and Mary. I bet when OP of the screenshotted post wrote that statement, she was talking about them and none of the other women I mentioned. Which again proves that this is about their faves and shipping - it’s not about female empowerment at all. Oh, and Mary and Molly just happen to be the women they ship with the male leads. So if we don’t agree on who they should be banging, we hate them obviously.

There's certainly valid criticism&dislike of Dany but it's no coincidence that this overwhelming and poorly concealed hatred dressed up as 'discussion' is mainly coming from shippers. No one is saying Dany's a perfect angel but the moral greyness she's guilty of, most other characters are as well. We've seen it all before unfortunately. But if people want to pretend they're truly just on their moral highhorse and have always held&criticicized characters like they do Dany they're fooling no one.
Yup. There’s absolutely valid criticism and dislike of her, just like every other character in GoT and indeed any piece of media. It’s not hard to tell, though, when that criticism is genuinely motivated and thoughtful, and when it’s angry screeching motivated by show hatred, misogyny, or ship wank. I’ve seen people complain that if they criticize Dany at all, they’re called misogynists, but here’s the thing, kids: people have been criticizing Dany for YEARS. You are nothing new. Most people will accept, ignore, or engage with  garden variety criticism, as they’ve done for years. It’s not ALL criticism that makes someone a misogynist asshole, it’s MISOGYNIST criticism. It’s not ALL criticism that gets identified as ship wank, it’s criticism that conveniently ignores mitigating context, amplifies supporting context, and screechs that Dany is Hitler/Ramsay/Gollum/Gaston from Beauty and the Beast/worse than Cersei/just like the Essosi slavers (all things I have seen with my own two benighted eyes).
There is a difference between criticism and judgment. Criticism is evaluating actions while taking into account context and circumstances. Judgment is extrapolating from that to assign moral value, specifically to a character or person. Judgment of fictional characters in the first place is frankly asinine in my opinion, because, you know, they don’t actually exist, but judgment that is arrived at dishonestly, antagonistically, and incompletely is especially worthless and annoying.
Here’s the thing, people who decide that someone dismissing their Dany criticism means that person doesn’t care about soldiers or thinks Dany is perfect, or whatever the fuck else: you are assuming that because we disagree with you on your judgment of Dany, that we must then deny all possible criticism. Not true! I can and do absolutely agree that soldiers dying in a war they didn’t start is brutal and terrible and sad. Unlike some of you, I’ve thought it was sad since the first season and didn’t need cute Lannisters, Ed Sheeran, or mean Targaryens (who are going to bang the dude I want for my fave instead but that’s totally irrelevant!) to illuminate the gruesome realities of war for me. War is hell! I am on that train, I have watched Band of Brothers so many times!
I can also point out that you didn’t give a fuck about soldiers until you could use it as a way to arrive at a judgment about Dany’s moral value. I can point out that you shift goalposts endlessly (”It’s inhuman and unforgivable to ever use fire as a weapon!” *someone points out that Tyrion and Jon have also used fire as weapons* “That was different!”). I can point out that you hold Dany fully accountable for the deaths of opposing soldiers while not caring even a whit that those same soldiers just slaughtered Tyrells while their allies were slaughtering Greyjoys and Martells. I can point out that the grain you’re so incensed about Dany burning was looted from the people of the Reach without compensation, leaving them to starve just like you’re so concerned about the people of King’s Landing doing. I can point out that some people were fine with all her actions in Essos when it was brown people getting roasted, but now that it’s white people, suddenly it’s a problem (see, I can play the Veil My Wank In Social Justice Language game too!). I can point out that your demands that Dany’s war is seen as just as ugly as any other war rings completely hollow when you also insist that Dany’s war is far worse than any other war in the history of ever. I can point out that the show itself is asking all the questions you claim to care about, about Dany’s methods, about the consequences of war, about questions of rule and right, and that the characters themselves are working through the ramifications of warfare, Dany included, and that if you just calm down and fucking watch, you might be pleasantly surprised at how things evolve.
So, you know. Yeah. We’re not ignoring valid criticism. Some people are just that transparent. Oh, and before anyone claims that I’m a Dany stan or Jon/Dany shipper, I’ll point out here that I’ve been shipping Jon/Sansa for as many years as the show has been on. Weird, isn’t it, how someone can like multiple characters and ships, even if those characters and ships might sometimes be at odds with each other?

I honestly wish people wers allowed to be indifferent to characters and ships. You don't have to come up with a bunch of reasons why you don't really like them, you can just move the fuck on.
Girl, I feel this so hard tbh! Fandom culture on tumblr has basically gotten rid of any ability to be indifferent, or be subjective, or like have a personal opinion about ~anything~ with out someone taking it as a personal insult against them somehow, or arguing with you, or sending you anon hate, or making a vague/call out post about you, or something fun like that. It’s obnoxious.
Any time I talk about why I love a favorite character, I literally feel like I am a defense attorney making a closing argument for someone accused of capital murder. It gets to the point sometimes where fandom honestly feels like homework. I don’t even bother talking publicly about stuff I don’t necessarily like or the reasons why. Partly because it’s just not how I like to spend my time, but also because it’s just always an absolute nightmare.
Now instead of saying “I like this character/ship because I find them entertaining and engaging, or I really relate to their POV, or they are hot and I want them to bang, or I just do” you have to come up with like an exhaustive laundry list of not only why they are a good character, but also of all their flaws so you aren’t “white washing them” or “romanticizing them” or whatever. And instead of saying “I don’t like this character/ship because there are things about them that bother me or make me uncomfortable, or I don’t really like those characters together, or it just doesn’t do anything for me, or I just don’t” you have to come up with all these moralistic accusations as to why they are The Worst.
And there is no in-between either, your either a stan or an anti. The minute you criticize a character or say anything remotely negative about them, you’re a hater. The minute you praise them, you’re glorifying them and obviously saying they have never done anything wrong ever in their fictional lives. From what I can tell, being an anti or a stan probably takes more mental dedication and effort that I’ve ever given anything in my entire life; INCLUDING the Bar Exam. But those terms get thrown around all the time along with all kinds of other moralistic accusations and buzzwords. There’s this mentality that people not only owe you their reasons for liking or disliking something, but also that you have any right to tell them those reasons are or aren’t acceptable. I mean discussion and debate is one thing, but that’s rarely ever what the response is. There is no more subjectively enjoying or not enjoying things. It’s all about being the most right and the most meta and the most morally justified. It always has to be A Thing™.
It’s kind of ridiculous when you think about it? Because we would never operate like this irl… For example, I absolutely fucking hate skiing. And I have plenty of what I consider to be very valid, personal reasons for hating skiing: I hate the cold, I hate having to wear big coats, I have terrible balance so I fall a lot and falling on ice hurts like a sonofabitch, being cold SUCKS, my lips and skin get chapped really easily, I have TERRIBLE knees and ankles which don’t help the falling situation, it reminds me how out of shape I am, ski lifts aren’t my fave, the helmets are super uncomfortable, I really fucking HATE the cold, ect. and so forth. I just don’t like it, it’s not fun for me, I have my reasons, and I will gladly tell any of this to anyone who asks. But no one is going to like, call me from a blocked number to anonymously start an argument with me, or jump in to call me an misogynistic asshole and fail at life, or tell me all my reasons are made up and I only just hate it because I stan the beach or ship snowboarding instead, or refuse to talk to me or be my friend anymore or anything like that because I hate skiing.
Everything about our preferences is subjective. You get a subjective outlook simply from being alive and having experiences in the world. There really is no such thing as being completely subjective, especially in regards to our likes and dislikes. That’s not how life works… But on here for some reason it does and yeah, it’s exhausting af.
