Tim: His sketchbook, a set of colored pencils, a half-complete issue of The Adventures of Weatherman, a thrifted Walkman cassette player with “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, a Black Lives Matter patch that he needs to ask Phoebe to stitch to his jean jacket, a Polaroid camera, notes for the next DND session, and a boba tea rewards card. 

Wanda: A pocket knife, a box of skull-patterned band-aids, a roll of grip tape, a mixtape of 2000s pop-punk from Tim, a lighter (just for fun), bright red lipstick, several broken eyeliner pencils, a stabby cat keychain, an old ripped pair of fishnets, a plastic spider to prank Carlos with, and a water bottle full of Monster Energy drink.

eight kids on a school bus field trip get into a crash on their way to their destination and fall into a nine month coma — or so they’re told. they don’t question it when they wake up in the hospital and are told as such.

years later, these kids start realizing their stories are matching up, their teacher is reappearing in town, and perhaps the magic school bus is real. the questions now are what really happened that day, who’s trying to keep the truth from them, and why.

(hope it isnt weird to drop in like this) there are also very few people in my life that I can talk to about jazz even though i am always down to...are there any musicians/eras in particular that you're interested/invested in?

literally always down to talk about jazz please drop in any time! obviously there is a lot of crossover between subgenres and many musicians moved between different ones throughout their careers but i think at heart i'm a soul jazz girl (which of course has crossover with hard bop on one end of the era and jazz funk on the other end); however i grew up on hard bop and early modal jazz so those artists are also big for me; i didn't like free jazz as a kid but over the years have really come to get into it; this also isn't even beginning to cover genres that are jazz influenced/adjacent like afrobeat (which is its own genre but also has so much crossover), acid jazz, no wave (to an extent), bossa nova.................

Finch rambles: MSB headcanons

(These are mostly headcanons that @daiohficblog and I have discussed on our Magic School Bus Discord server, but there's a few of my own as well.)

Carlos and Wanda are basically adopted twins, even though they live in different families.

One time, when Wanda was six, her actual older brother (Henry) shut her in one of the grocery store freezers. She was there for several minutes before Carlos found her and got her out. Ever since then, Wanda has hated the cold.

Carlos knows that Wanda and Henry don't get along, but part of him still can't fathom that siblings would fight so often. He's the oldest of three siblings, and they're practically three peas in a pod. Any time he gets into a fight with Mikey and/or Maria, it's usually about something silly.

Phoebe's basically a Disney Princess-- she's a good singer, she's kind, and she has a natural talent for befriending animals. She also names all of the animals she befriends.

The comedy act that Carlos puts on in "Getting Energized" (especially the Terminator impression) is something he came up with to entertain his younger siblings cousins at family gatherings. However, it does not work on a crowd of people who have been waiting god-knows-how-long to ride a Ferris Wheel.

Carlos cannot for the life of him play an instrument. However, he is a good singer. (Probably the second-best after Phoebe.) Wanda, on the other hand, thinks she is a good singer, but isn't.

Phoebe is the tallest girl in the class, but also the youngest.

Q1 :   if  you  could  write  your  character  your  way  in  their  own  movie ,   what  would  it  be  called ,  what  style  would  it  be  filmed  in ,  and  what  would  it  be  about ?       A1 : Recently I decided that if/when I try to write anything serious about Eve again, it’ll center on her being a jewel thief because it presents me more fun, and emotionally diverse, opportunities. That and I have a very specific cover image in my mind. Ideally, her adventures would be a series of books. I have no title in mind, no idea about how ‘it would be filmed’ ( although a style replicating 90s films would be excellent, film grain and all. ) but, I do have a bunch of plots in mind that I really don’t feel like typing out here.  

Q2 :   what  would  their  soundtrack / score  sound  like ?         A2 :  Her score would have a vintage sound (or a jazzy Spike Lee sound, if you will) with instrumentals by Dorothy Ashby (a Jazz Harpist) the Ahmad Jamal Trio, Pharaoh Sanders, Yusef Lateef and Tarika Blue. For music with lyrics, the soundtrack would include the likes of Julie London, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dionne Warwick.

Q3 :   why  did  you  start  writing  this  character ?   + Q4 :   what  first  attracted  you  to  this  character ? A3 :  Whenever I make NPCs for my character’s lives I actually can’t just let them just be NPCs. I start thinking about them too much. Developing them too much. And then I’m like, ‘wow! I really like this character!’ Eve was a different character when I began writing her, and likely wouldn’t be considered the same character as she was previously, if I told someone in real life who knows about my writing (like my grandma) about all the changes she has undergone. Originally Delores was a university professor, because I thought it could lead to interesting interactions with college-age muses. And her previous history with the mafia was also something interesting to tap in. But then I started thinking about what was realistic, what wasn’t realistic, what did I feel comfortable/interested writing? What didn’t I feel comfortable/interested in writing?  So as time went on, things would alter about this character. And the new things I came up with attracted me more. 

Q5 :   describe  the  biggest  thing  you  dislike  about  your  muse.         A5 :  I have a love/hate relationship with Eve’s quiet demeanor. On one hand, I think quieter characters need love and the ability to be fully dimensional but on the other hand, writing louder characters has always been more fun for me. But really, Eve’s guarded behavior makes writing her stressful in some cases with others because sometimes...if I’m going to be honest...people don’t know how to carry a thread and interact with someone of her demeanor effectively. 

Q6 :   what  do  you  have  in  common  with  your  muse ?       A6 : We’re both black, we’re both into art (although our exact interests and aesthetics with art differ)

Q7 :   how  does  your  muse  feel  about  you ?         A7 : Realistically she would think I need to take better care of myself.

Q8 :   what  characters  does  your  muse  have  interesting  interactions with ?   A8 :  We skippin’ this question.

Q9 :   what  gives  you  inspiration  to  write  your  muse ?       A9 : Films such as, “Waiting to Exhale,” “The Kitchen” and “Widows.” Books by Alice Walker, like “The Third Life of Grange Copeland” as well as her short story, “Roselily.” The historical mob figure Stephanie St. Clair.

Q10 :   how  long  did  this  take  you  to  complete ?       A10 : A few hours.

Magic School Bus/ Star Trek AU, part 2 of 2

Lt. Phoebe Terese, chief xenobiologist. One of the newer members of the crew. Often makes references to “her old ship.”

Lt. Commander Timothy “Tim” Jamal-Wright. Chief of operations. Likes to paint and draw in his spare time.

Lt. Commander Dorothy Ann “D.A.” Hudson. Chief science officer. Specializes in astronomy and astrophysics.

Lt. Commander Carlos Ramon, chief of communications. Fluent in multiple languages, and knows puns for every one of them. Formerly in the science officer track before deciding to go into Ops.

Lt. Miguel “Mikey” Ramon, chief engineer. He’s one of the youngest chief engineers in the history of Starfleet. (He’s only 22 — Chekov’s age in TOS— when he’s promoted to that position.)

Lt. Leonard “Len” Terese. Joined the crew shortly after his daughter Phoebe transferred.

Ensign Evangeline “Evan” Hudson, science officer. D.A’s younger sister, who just graduated from Starfleet Academy.

Ensign Maria Ramon, another recent Academy graduate. Decided to go into Ops/Engineering like her older brothers Carlos and Mikey.

Notes:

Carlos and D.A. are currently dating.

Phoebe keeps several alien plants in her quarters. And she knows how to fence, and do various martial arts. (Much like Sulu in TOS.)

Mikey gets around on a super-high-tech wheelchair that he modified himself.

Evan and Maria were in the same class of Starfleet cadets. They may or not be dating.

Okay everybody under the cut I will rank my magic school bus ships with a shipping chart for further clarity

(I tried to put in all the no-go ships but it made the chart unreadable :( so just assume anything not listed is a no)

1. Dorothy Ann x Keesha Franklin

Honestly 10/10 they’re very lovely lesbians and deserve a little homoeroticism (as a treat)

2. Carlos Ramon x Ralphie Tennelli x Arnold Perlstein

First poly-ship of the post LET’S GO. So these characters clearly love each other deeply, as you can tell if you ever watched the show. You can see that both Ralphie and Arnold have a great love and admiration from Carlos and his japes, even if they hide that behind mild annoyance (period typical homophobia and all that :’(). Carlos and Arnold love just vibing with Ralphie. Arnold is supported by both Ralphie and Carlos when he’s afraid. Overall 12/10 very non-toxic.

2. Wanda Li x Tim Jamal

This may seem like a straight ship but DO NOT BE FOOLED Wanda is clearly a bisexual icon and if Tim Jamal isn’t pansexual I don’t know who is. Honestly they just both really enjoy each others company and love to spend their free time together. Solid 11/10

3. Miss Frizzle x Miss Frizzle

Look she has a magic school bus who’s to say little self-cest isn’t possible? (Just time travel I say) 8/10

4. Phoebe Terese x Arnold Perlstein

(Look I know I’m repeating characters but there aren’t that many in the show and I refuse to ship Phoebe with a lizard okay?!) Look if I’m being real this isn’t like my otp or anything but they’re a cute couple and I think they’d be really cute together. Probably insufferable to all the other characters though.. (if I’m being honest this would’ve probably been canon if the show had a romantic element) 7/10

5. Ralphie Tenelli x Wanda Li

Another ship I think would’ve been canon if the magic school bus was a teen drama. Honestly not my fave but I think it’s a bit cute and I can totally see Wanda pining from Ralphie for years, oh man the pining! (Maybe even mutual pining? ;)) 9/10 lots of potential
