Gravity Falls Character Fonts
Listed this out for a server I'm in so I might as well put it here too. I've also linked where to get these fonts as the image sources.
I'm leaving out Dipper's handwriting/GF credits font "Joe Font" which according to a reddit post seemed to be custom made for the show from Joe Pitt's handwriting? I'm inclined to believe it since it's not available commercially, is used nowhere else but in Gravity Falls media, and at the very least looks like his handwriting:
Tumblr media
Anyway...
Ford uses 3 (!) fonts. His main handwriting font is Norwich, but he uses Cool Crayon as his print font for emphasis and description for his drawings. He also has a "spooky emphasis" font in Smudger Std usually for quoting Cryptids and mysterious writing. Or just when something particularly creepy is going on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cool Crayon also does double duty as Ford-Quoting-Bill, and Soos and Stan's personal handwriting.
But Bill's real handwriting font is NOT Cool Crayon and is actually Kidwriting Pro instead:
Tumblr media
Mabel's handwriting used to be DK Crayonista, it's now Leftover Crayon. She's been working on her penmanship during the summer on top of all those sweaters, I guess!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fiddleford's handwriting when he was young was Itchy Handwriting but since his handwriting isn't very legible anymore he now uses Dictation-bot, which prints out on the world's last Dot Matrix printer in Pixter Granular:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pacifica's font, with her silly little hearts dotting her lowercase i's is KG Ray of Sunshine:
Tumblr media
And Wendy's handwriting is Fonteys Pro, nothing of interest to say here except that her handwriting is skewed at an angle, so annoying! I say as I write at an angle...
Tumblr media
Anyway that's all the characters of note! Let me know if I missed anything.

Spotting the Cult: Hidden in Plain Sight
As someone who practically camps on TikTok and breathes BTS air for a living, I can smell a cultist from a mile away. You don’t even have to mention ships — just show me your "totally neutral" edit of idols looking majestic on big screens, and somehow, magically, the only BTS members that made the cut are Tae and Jungkook. Wow. What a crazy coincidence. What are the odds!
It’s always the same formula too — the way they position photos, the rankings they make, the “unbiased” admiration they dish out, the “oh I just love their dynamic” disguised as OT7 loyalty. And then suddenly everyone else is mysteriously missing, blurred, or cropped like they’re NPCs in the Tk cinematic universe. No baby, it’s cult propaganda with extra glitter. Even when the video isn’t even about BTS, they just happen to slide those two in. Like clockwork. Like ritual. It’s giving: I’m not like other delulus, I’m a subtle delulu.”
Heck! They don’t even need a hint or sign in their username, bio, or anywhere visible. They could have a Yoongi stan pfp, make tiktoks about cats and lattes all day — doesn’t matter. It’s in the vibe. The passive-aggressive tone. The subtle digs. the selective memory, the weird energy when certain members are brought up.
I can’t explain it scientifically, but I know. Like a sixth sense. It's spiritual at this point. I see one sentence and I’m like, yep — that’s a cultist. You can change the outfit, but the delusion always leaks through the seams.
It’s honestly adorable how they think they’re being slick. You’re not low, you’re just layered — like an onion of projection.
But here’s the thing — you can’t mask psychosis with pretty collages and aesthetic fonts. Mental illness has a pattern, and cultists leave fingerprints on everything they touch. You guys are so loud without even speaking.
But hey, keep the routine going. The symmetry, the “coincidences,” the convenient forgetfulness… It’s almost comforting now. Like a glitch in the matrix I’ve learned to expect. And don’t worry — some of us are always watching, silently connecting dots while you crop out your conscience.

Miami Vice S1E14: Golden Triangle, Part 1
A rash of violence against sex workers raises Castillo's suspicions.
And we learn that Castillo is... I don't know? A martial arts wizard?? We'll later learn he is also a fucking samurai, but this is really the first "let's give Castillo depth" episode, and they really fucking go for it
An absolutely useless bit of trivia: some of the opening credits in this episode are in the wrong font.
Tumblr media
This is not the Miami Vice font. It switches back to the Miami Vice font like two names later.
Love Castillo downing a cafecito from what is absolutely not a heat-safe plastic glass, and Rico and Sonny following him as he walks away like he's a beautiful girl in a bikini
Also love that Crockett's "nerd" disguise involves going over dot matrix printouts by hand by the pool. A normal vacation activity. Love less that he is just blatantly doing an entrapment.
When Sonny and Rico take Candy in, we cut to a currently-in-progress conversation in which she asks Sonny, "well, am I right or what?" Then pauses, while neither Sonny or Rico look her in the eye, but they both smile in the most hollow and awkward way possible, and then Candy nods and says, "Yeah, I'm right." I really want to know what she thinks she's right about that both Sonny and Rico basically are like 'please stop talking' about.
Candy is great-- she's very savvy about the police (and rightly does not trust them), very intense, and has no issues telling Sonny off.
Rico finds all of this hilarious.
The drug dealer who wants a safety deposit box is John Snyder, who will always be "extremely annoying Joey in the Mafia Wars arc of Wiseguy" to me, except that recently Dan and I watched an episode of Star Trek in which he was a eugenicist from the eugenicist planet. Man sure plays some roles. He's also apparently a long-time anime voice actor??
Sonny complains about the system being broken and Tubbs kind of sighs and says "the system. Want a cold one?" #1 reason Tubbs isn't as broken by the end of the show is that he comes in from day one knowing that Everything Sucks Forever, while Crockett takes it personally every single time
Alligator Nail Filing
Alligator
Nail
Filing
"We're getting too good at playing bad guys" sure is the understatement of the whole series
It's not actually clear until around the 3/4 mark that this is the first Castillo Episode, but he makes a wonderful little suspicious face when Sonny starts telling him about Szarbo-- he knows something is amiss.
There's an exchange with the cop who has been working part time as a pimp where Sonny no-true-Scotsmans him-- he states that the man isn't a "real" cop for what he's done. I think Sonny still genuinely believes this at this point in the series. He will not by the end.
Castillo finds out that one of the dead people is Thai and just absolutely flips out and is like I NEED TO SEE THE CORPSE. I get what the actual intention here is-- that Castillo has put together enough things about the case based on similarities to things that happened during his own years in Thailand-- but we don't know that yet as an audience, so it just kind of seems like Castillo is totally paranoid and thinks any deceased person of Thai descent MUST be involved in crime, which is not a good look.
I adore the sequence in which it is implied Tubbs and Castillo go to like eight Thai restaurants together, partially because I appreciate when they work together, and partially because I love seeing restaurants from bygone days.
To the tune of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
Awkward dinner naked waiter
Awkward dinner naked waiter
Awkward dinner naked waiter
Marty n' Rico having supper
It is awkward!
(but seriously why does that waiter not have a shirt)
And we learn, finally, that Castillo is a master of every martial art, as he gets in a wild action movie fist fight with the naked waiter in the parking lot. It's stupid and fantastic in equal measures, and we'll learn even more about Castillo's exciting fisticuffs adventures next time.

So I often see novel computer keyboard designs, but I hadn't really felt inspired to make my own until now.
See, Hackaday recently ran a piece on Stephen Holdaway's "Unicode Binary Input Terminal", which lets you flip switches to input any Unicode character — by flipping switches to indicate its binary value in UTF-8 encoding.
Tumblr media
It displays the character on the little display, and you can then flip another switch to send the character like a keyboard would over USB.
Among the usual comments about how Holdaway should have built the device by using only 555 timers came the suggestion that UTF-8 is unwieldy, and that he should have added even more toggle switches to enter longer bitstreams directly. Now, I don't want to take that tack on it; toggle switches get expensive. But there are other ways to input long sets of binary data!
Tumblr media
Years ago, I found this panel in some surplus or thrift shop; I honestly don't remember any more. It's got two sets of eight hexadecimal thumbwheel switches; each one can be set to a hexadecimal "digit" between 0 and F, and the binary pattern of that hexit read off the leads in the back.
(If anyone out there recognizes where this panel originally came from, let me know; it has no other markings besides the visible ones, and the switch banks just each bear a sticker saying they came from the Digitran Company of Pasadena, California, and were probably made in 1972. (Remarkably, Digitran still makes very similar switches — I think there's a military spec for them — though they're presently owned by Electro Switch Corp, and are of the sort that don't list prices on the webpage. For similar devices, Surplus Sales of Nebraska has 6-hexit banks, albeit with shorter numbers, available for $225 each, or slightly taller ones for $15 per hexit and you have to fabricate your own frame.)
At any rate, the switch banks are easily removed from the panel. My plan is to set them in a new panel with a display between them and have a toggle or slider switch to change modes, so you can enter UTF-8 streams (anywhere between eight ASCII characters and a single dual-character-point emoji; the wheels are currently set to display the US flag) or sets of UTF-16 or UTF-32 characters; a final button would again send the character(s) over USB.
I'm currently dithering over how best to implement this. Obviously Unicode isn't going to fit in any of my usual microcontrollers, and the 64 data lines required to read the switches will need some GPIO expanders or shift registers. I do have a couple of unused Raspberry Pi ZeroWs lying around, which would let me leverage Linux font and Unicode handling, and then I could hook it to an Arduino or Teensy to handle the USB part, unless there's an obvious way for a Pi to be a USB client. The display is a similar dither; I've got some small graphical LCDs and a tiny OLED display, and even some e-ink displays that might work for this. Heck, I should see if I can find those dot-matrix VFDs I have somewhere. It's more likely to be a color LCD if I want emoji support, but requirements are flexible right now.

Okay, so: true story, as best I can remember it.
I'm... I don't know, maybe twelve years old? It's a Tuesday. I have just been dropped off at school. I am looking through my spiral to see what's in store for today. Oh, I think. The five page essay on the history of the solar system is due today. Then I think, Did I remember to write that essay? Gentle reader, you know as well as I do that of course I had not.
My dad teaches at the school and therefore also drives us there. As a result, it's nearly an hour before classes actually start, and I am sitting in the computer lab in the second floor of the barn. (First floor was the art room. The trellis outside was where most of us at lunch.) So I fire up one of the computers, and I start writing at top speed.
This is the early eighties. Computers are... not much, compared to what we take for granted today. Word processing is a revolutionary process which allows you to move words around and correct mistakes without retyping an entire page or resorting to white-out. Printed pages -- for a five page essay, just to pick an example -- are done on dot matrix, and you have to tear the edges off before you turn them in.
So I take my results -- just under one whole page of text -- and I do what any sensible college student would, only more so: I bump up the font size. I increase the margins. I make sure the whole thing is triple-spaced. By the time I'm done, I have a one-page essay printed in a narrow strip of very large, well-separated letters across five whole pages, and a little note at the bottom that says, "Sorry, I forgot, I'll get you a fleshed-out version tomorrow."
And that was how I earned my first extension on a paper.

Message Boards Give Smooth Updates
Tumblr media
Message boards have actually been around for some time now and they have actually obtained advanced enough to bring timely and purposeful interaction to people in ways not understood heretofore. Message boards usually incorporate some kind of clock display screen with a restricted area for message screen; the message length isn't necessarily restricted by the room, as scrolling is usually an attribute. These displays are likewise with the ability of upgrading content basically in real time, which occurs seamlessly for the customer.
Digital message boards are now the standard, consisting of 2 lines for message (often only 1) that is formatted as a two-dimensional dot matrix of LEDs, plus a separate array committed for showing the moment. The boards (throughout an organization) are controlled with software that is installed on the firm network and accessed via any network website. Occasionally the tools are augmented with additional functions, such as a loudspeaker that might supply audio communication, or light strobing for attracting attention.
Sms message are converted into a stream of dot-matrix patterns (similar to font style) that then obtains filled right into the 2D range of LEDs; there might be a stipulation for mapping photos also. The web content is under the control of software program, which might page segments in and out of the screen or potentially inch lines along to give the appearance of scrolling. A primary combination might be offered assigning particular tones individually per line.
A message might be really short, such as a secret language, or forever long. Of course, if one desires to make the notification fixed for any kind of amount of time, its entire content has to match the a couple of lines of room designated. Generally, however, the software application carries out vibrant messaging, scrolling the display at an assigned speed.
Certainly, nowadays people want not only vibrant notifications but additionally real-time updating. This requires that all gadgets be integrated across entire organizations, whether they be producers, medical facilities, or colleges. Additionally, message boards need to be geared up to receive triggering signals (relayed from a master clock) to submit brand-new info.
When such a system remains in area, each board immediately displays the current time and all boards remain in sync. The control software for the board likewise becomes central, altering each board simultaneously to show the same information. There might be alternatives for the display layout, however that option would certainly be duplicated everywhere.
Message updates are implemented in a variety of means; they might comply with a pre-recorded program according to a timetable, they could be manually set up, or they might take the type of a real-time emergency alarm. In the last case, the software application needs to have the ability to manage the scenario. Probably it interrupts the timetable with a red colored Lockdown! sharp, then changes that with a real-time message composed and transmitted on the fly.
In non-emergencies, it still may be needed to have an override stipulation under regional control. The interruption would certainly accompany a lot more benign alert, and an operator would certainly construct the notification manually. When total, the driver triggers the software application to relay the trigger and message to all boards all at once.
The most recent control software application has a tendency to be much more sophisticated, allowing the collection of boards with separate messaging. By doing this, some groups proceed in a semi-automatic mode, while others are targeted to receive particular updates or run more dynamically. synchronized clocks for hospitals
We have actually come a long way from the simple church-front indication boards that were fixed besides weekly updates. The general public these days is made use of to immediate alerts on their smart devices and other devices, and are conditioned to anticipate a quicker paced environment. Modern modern technology has actually maintained, and institutional message boards currently offer seamless updates.

Design Concept
These are designs experimentation with some more keywords from the overall theme “growth”
"Adaptation"
Composition and Typography: The use of overlapping and transparent layers adds depth to the piece. The typography choice seems modern and sturdy, fitting well with the industrial feel of the gears and cogs.
Color and Contrast: The grayscale palette works well for the theme, suggesting a kind of foundational or elemental quality to adaptation—like metal, which is strong but malleable.
Symbolism: The gears symbolize the mechanics of change and adaptation.
"Break Out" (both versions)
Visual Impact: The bright green on black makes it more eye-catching. The pixelated effects suggest digital technology and have a dynamic, almost video game aesthetic, which fits the "Break Out" theme well.
Typography and Design: The font modification is playful and modern, which pairs nicely with the graphic style of the piece. The use of the digital dot matrix pattern in the 'O' is a creative touch that ties into the theme of breaking out.
Consistency: Both versions maintain a consistent theme but differ slightly in color usage. The green version has a more vibrant, energetic feel, while the monochrome has a more restrained/mysterious.
Areas for improvement
"Adaptation"
Consider how the placement of text might be optimized to enhance readability without losing the artistic overlay.
Experiment with a slight introduction of color to highlight specific elements or to create a focal point within the artwork.
For the animated version of the poster, it would be interesting to see some parts of the gears in motion or breaking, to signify adaptation through change or innovation.
"Break Out"
For the black and white version, some of the smaller text elements and design features lose impact due to low contrast.
The scattered pixel effect suits the theme very well, but more variation in size and scattering can enhance the sense of 'breaking out'. Increase the range of pixel sizes and how they fade out from the center to make the dispersion appear more powerful and less steady.

A throwback of my high school years: Here is an Epson RX-80 dot matrix printer from the early 1980s, a more featured sibling to the MX-80 that I used daily which was attached to an Apple //e. (The RX line was faster and could handle sheets of paper where the MX was tractor-feed fan-fold only.)
One neato thing about these Epsons was that they were programmable and they had some memory. From the Apple I could send the printer a font, then anything printed after that would be in that font. Also, the lab had the manual so I read up on how to tell the printer to do specialty work... There was one time when the Algebra 2/Trig teacher said we could bring a 3″x5″ notecard of ‘cheats’ to class for exams, and while most people were hand-writing things in tiny print I wrote a BASIC program that would first tell the printer to go into 132cpi mode, then print these formulas, complete with superscripts for exponents. Classmates were either impressed and wanted their own copy, or rolled their eyes. While the printout was not 3″x5″ in dimension it was the same 15 square inches in surface, so the teacher allowed it. While I don’t know if I still have one of those printouts, I know I do still have the program on a 5.25″ floppy and the name of it is “Vandenbrink Busters!”
