You see, Jon, right from the moment I met your mom, I knew... I have to love this woman as much as I can for as long as I can, and I can never stop loving her, not even for a second. I carried that lesson with me. And I carried it with me when she died in childbirth. Even then, in what can only be called the worst of times, all I could do was look at her and thank God, thank every god there is, or ever was, or will be, and the whole universe, and anyone else I can possibly thank that I saw that beautiful girl on that train platform, and that I had the guts to stand up, walk over to her, tap her on the shoulder, open my mouth, and speak.

This came across my timeline and….wow, I feel like Downtown Train is literally predicting the future of the MTA. I’m genuinely shook by this caption because I wrote that a year ago, in long-time New Yorker Jess Mariano’s voice….the algorithm is too good, I fear.

DOWNTOWN TRAIN
Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the night time mist
I climb through the window and down to the street
I’m shining like a new dime
The downtown trains are full
Full of all them brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds
You wave your hand and they scatter like…

Downtown Train - Tom Waits

Happy Birthday to Tom Waits, the greatest genius to ever speak to the upper case r Romance of American life amongst the dreamers, drunks, and the tattered remains of what used to be our working class.
We all have a secret inner voice that we hold close and precious and protect from the world. His lyrics whisper - and shout - a dialogue with mine.
