❀ 𝟛𝕣𝕕 𝕛𝕦𝕝𝕪 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟜 ❀
Hello everyone! Sorry for not posting original content in a while. I had the time to read and study, but I lacked motivation. (i have at least 10+ paperbacks and 30+ ebooks to read, and yet I still didn't finish the book I started 2 weeks ago 😅😭)
A little update: My foot is alright, I just strained my ligaments. I couldn't walk on my left foot for 2 weeks. After going to a checkup a couple of days earlier I started walking again. It's painful, but I'm glad that I am finally able to walk again.
Fun fact: All the photos were made today. (I usually add some old photos to the mix) Mom made a spongecake. For a spongecake that doesn't have any animal products in it or oil, it tastes surprisingly well.
What I did today:
Read some articles on "der Spiegel"
Revised nearly all of the material I studied so far (because I didn't study in a while)
Listened to the German news on "Die Nachrichten" by Deutschlandfunk on Spotify

I am so excited! I just ordered two new language books to practice my French, and to finally start learning Dutch. It's from the same author that I got my Russian book from. I can't wait to read them.

In English we might call someone a nitpicker.
In dutch they would call you an ant-fucker (Mierenneuker). What a language <3
#you can also call them a commafucker#fun fact: someone called a traffic warden this and it was decided that was A-OK#legally in the netherlands you can call traffic cops antfuckers. if you so desire.#dutch#language#quinn posts#linguistics#dutch language#learning dutch

Dutch people when the bill comes

(The joke is that "the bill" in Dutch (de rekening) is spelt and said very similarly to the reckoning in English)

The Dutch word 'wel'
In Dutch we have the beautiful word 'wel' which can not be translated to English. It is the opposite of 'Niet' (not), so for example
Ik wil dit niet => I do not want this
Ik wil dit wel => I DO want this
In English you may emphasise 'do' to say the opposite of 'do not', in Dutch you can use 'wel'
Ik heb dit wel gedaan => I DID do this
With or without emphasis on 'wel' a sentence may mean different things
IK doe dit wel => I do this (don't worry, I will do this)
Ik doe dit WEL => I DO, do this

wat ik toch een van de mooiste dingen vind aan de Nederlandse taal is het woordje "wel". Ik HOU ervan met heel mijn hart dat we een tegenovergestelde van "niet" hebben. Het is in de meeste andere talen die ik ken zo moeilijk uitleggen wat ik daarmee bedoel, en ik mis dit woordje zo enorm veel rip 🫶

I'm learning Dutch right now, and I keep getting thrown off by one incredibly specific thing. Dutch has two words for "The", "Het" and "De", and the usage for them seems kind of arbitrary tbh, but that's besides the point. The Dutch word for "Child" is "Kind". So if you wanted to say "The Child" in Dutch, that would be "Het Kind".
The problem is that I know Hawaiian Pidgin, which depending on who you ask is either a creole language or just an extremely divergent English accent. In Pidgin, pretty much every noun can be replaced with the phrase "Da Kine", which is more or less used as "That thing that you and I both know but I can't remember/can't be bothered to remember the proper name of right now."
So instead of "Het Kind", I keep accidentally saying "De Kine" because I keep mixing up my languages and getting both of them wrong in the process.

literally crazy to me that people will be like "haha dutch sounds so silly it can't even be real" as if English and Dutch aren't incredibly similar languages.
The only reason it sounds silly is because you mispronounce every word?? as if English doesn't also sound silly if you mispronounce things??
Plenty of commonly used words are Dutch loanwords (eg: cookie, boss, spook, frolic) and I even know two words which are literally just Dutch with a slightly different pronunciation (eg: gratis, angst)
Like I dunno man. Sometimes memes about the Dutch language are funny but it's also frustrating when people joke about the language not being real. I speak that every day of my life, dude.
#my posts#also i love talking about the similarities between dutch and english#in high school we had to read old english and it was even MORE similar to dutch did you know that??#it's just very neat#dutch#english language#dutch language

❀ 𝟜𝕥𝕙-𝟙𝟘𝕥𝕙 𝕛𝕦𝕝𝕪 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟜 ❀
The cat belongs to our neighbor and she really loves to cuddle, but of course food is her main priority! 😅😂 On the right is our elderflower/elderberry, this year we will make jam out of it since we already have plenty of elderflower syrup. It's super hot in my country, I can't wait for this heatwave to be over. 🥵
What I did the past few days:
Read articles on "der Spiegel"
Listened to the German news on the radio (downloaded an international radio app where I can listen to all sorts of radio stations)
Read "Sense and Sensibility" by Jane Austen
Replied to my German pen pal (we are writing to each other in German and I see that as a good opportunity to work on my reading/writing comprehension)
Started doing puzzles and playing Sudoku to keep the mind fresh
Reviewed a grammar lesson and highlighted the most important info (I wanted to make notes, but I didn't, because I felt tired)

Like many people, I have trouble pronouncing Dutch vowel combinations, and since I won't recite random words from a dictionary, I wrote some silly sentences to recite instead:
OE: Hoe is het boek in de hoek beland? How did the book end up in the corner?
EU: Leun niet op de deur. Laat uw neus niet tegen de deur rusten. Don't lean on the door. Don't rest your nose against the door.
IJ/EI: Schrijf je de hele tijd in mei? Do you write all the time in May?
UI: Hij is weg van huis omdat hij buiten in de tuin werkt. He is away from home because he is working outside in the garden.
UW: Duw de deur. Dit is ruw. Dit is uw deur. Push the door. This is rough. This is your door.
OU: Oud hout is koud. Old wood is cold.
AAI: Ga bij de baai zitten en naai, het zal niet saai zijn. Sit by the bay and sew, it won't be boring.
EEUW: De kinderen schreeuwen. Er is al een eeuw geen sneeuw gevallen. The children are screaming. Snow hasn't fallen in a century.
OOI: Ik heb nog nooit zoiets moois gezien. Zal ik het ooit zien? I've never seen anything so beautiful. Will I ever see it?
OEI: Koeien loeien als ze boeien zien. Cows moo when they see buoys.
IEUW: Deze vis heeft opnieuw nieuwe kieuwen. This fish has new gills again
