So you want to learn Scottish Gaelic
These are just some resources and organisations I have found/used in my learning so far
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig - The Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is a Gaelic school on the Isle of Skye. They offer both in person and long distance courses in a variety of Gaelic related subjects and a variety of levels. Obviously I wouldn't recommend taking on a full university degree unless you're really interested in that as it's a lot of time, money, commitment etc, but I've listed them because they're a major contributor to the Gaelic learning world. They also have online summer courses for learners of various levels
Duolingo - This is a great starting place. Their Gaelic course was created in partnership with the the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. The full grammar notes for the course can be found here. From what I've found, this course is estimated to get you to roughly A1 going on A2
LearnGaelic - This website has a mixture of basic grammar intro lessons as well as a dictionary. I find that the dictionary sometimes has trouble filtering relevance of vocab, but overall I find it quite helpful
Gaelic Books Council - The Gaelic Books Council supports Gaelic writers and publishers, promoting and selling Gaelic books in a range of genres. They have both original works, and popular works which have been translated into Gaelic
Acair Books - A Stornoway based publisher of Gaelic, Scots and English books. They have a large selection of children's books which are great for beginner learners, but also have adult books
The Scottish Book Trust - A charity dedicated to reading and writing in all of English, Scots and Gaelic. You can browse their website for a range of poetry, prose, learning resources, writers' awards and fellowships
Am Faclair Beag - The Little Dictionary. I find this dictionary is slightly better at filtering by relevance than the LearnGaelic dictionary, so I often use it to cross reference. LearnGaelic has a tendency to give you the most obscure translation first, whereas Am Faclair Beag will usually prioritise more common translations
Speak Gaelic - Speak Gaelic is a series created by BBC ALBA. There is a YouTube series with Joy Dunlop, a podcast with John Urquhart, and a website with quizzes to test your learning. The initial series is roughly A1, with some of the later episodes aiming for A2. A good intro, though the website is known to be a bit glitchy
Beag air Bheag - Little by Little. Also by the BBC, this is a slightly more advanced series than Speak Gaelic, but hosted by the familiar John Urquhart. I can't find the exact CEFR level, but I seem to remember it being advertised as B1-2
BBC ALBA - The BBC's Scottish Gaelic programs. I occasionally scroll through their iPlayer. Some of the shows have captions which I find helpful, although not all do. Children's TV is always a great way to learn a new language as it is designed with children learning the language in mind. I think I saw they had some Moomin Valley last time I looked
Faclair nan Gèidheal - The Dictionary for Gayls (gay/queer Gaels). This is a great resource filled with a tonne of terminology relating to the LGBTQ+ community. This is where I get vocab like tar-ghnèitheach and neò-bhìnearaidh from
Open Book Reading - An organisation who run Gaelic speaking, reading and writing sessions both in person and online. I'd recommend looking at their Eventbrite page
The Mega Folder - I'm sure people have seen me talk about this before. I'd personally recommend Scottish Gaelic in Twelve Weeks
Editing this to specify that Gaelic means the Scottish variety. If people keep tagging this as Irish I swear to God

Hi anyone new: just an fyi my pinned resources post is unfortunately not exhaustive. There are a lot of newer things I've shared that I didn't add yet, mainly because I haven't edited that post in a long while.
Some useful tags
Rec list (some resources shared under this tag)
Japanese resources (japanese learning resources or immersion I've found like some lets plays, graded readers, manga)
Chinese resources (chinese learning resources or immersion I've found like some webnovels, shows, graded readers, manhua)
Japanese reference (information containing grammar or vocabulary, or links related to study materials like Textbooks)
Chinese reference (information containing grammar or vocabulary, or links related to study materials like Textbooks)
Resources (general tag for learning resources or immersion material)
Reference (general tag for grammar or vocabulary explanations or study materials)
Listening reading method (posts about listening reading method)
Lr method, l r method (other tags for posts on listening reading method)
Reading list (stuff I've read in chinese or japanese, or plan to read)
My reading list (a more specific tag for stuff I have read)
Comprehensible input, comprehensible input method, nature method (tags on posts related to learning with comprehensible input)
Comprehensible input resources (resources for learning with comprehensible input. I do not use this tag enough as some posts for this are untagged)
Study plan (my summary or notes on study plans I have done, or am planning on doing, or study challenges I am attempting)
Progress (my general tag for notes about progress on how the study plan is working or not, and reflections on old study plans and my general progress over time)
I used to use tags such as: january study plan, january progress, etc. But in retrospect that only helped with tracking in the first year. So at this point everything is just under the general tags: study plan, progress
Study method (i do not use this tag much anymore, i used to use this tag for posts explaining certain study methods or experiments/challenges involving certain study methods)
Refold, mass immersion approach, massive immersion approach (these are all generally the same study method, i did not consistently tag, I mostly made reflections on attempting this method to a degree and what i saw as its short comings and positives)
Apps, app review (i need to consistently tag these. Further tags for more specific apps: duolingo, clozemaster, glossika, lingodeer, memrise)
Article (i need to use this tag more, tag for sharing articles i have found about either about language learning, or specific articles for teaching particular language information, or articles explaining various study methods)
Rant (my general tag when im not sure where a post falls, it may not be informational in any particular way, and it's more of a personal journal entry of how studying is going or things i've been thinking about that are related to studying)
Chinese reading, japanese reading (i do not use these tags much anymore, but i used to use them to share either reading materials i found or reading skill progress)
I have a few tags for my resources and reference masterposts, and study plan masterposts, but i do not remember them at the moment so i'll need to look them up

@angry-pinscher nominated me, so here we goooo
Tea, coffee or soda?
Mostly soda, occasionally tea and I don't like coffee but drink it constantly.
Cats or dogs?
Cats, hands down. Love them. Dogs are adorable too, but when it comes to what I'd like as a pet, I'll choose cats every time.
Can you play an instrument?
Kinda? I sing and the voice is sorta an instrument, right?
I also play a bit of ukulele, guitar and keyboard, but never learned either.
What's your sign?
Sagittarius.
First song lyrics that pop in your head?
We're aaaaall in thiiiiis togeeether, once we know that we are, we're all stars and we seeeeee that...
Do you have any tattoos?
Yup. Seven: one on each ankle side, one right on my foot, one on my stomach and one above my elbow crease.
Favorite place you've traveled?
Ummm probably London, I love seeing musicals and I've made pretty nice memories there.
What's the last movie you watched?
Tricky, I watch so much content all the damn time hehe... BUT the last one I distinctively remember is "Everything Everywhere All At Once". SO GOOD!!!
Edit: actually, it was "Star Wars: A New Hope", which I watched for the FIRST TIME with my boyfriend hehe
Do you have any hobbies?
Yeah, plenty! I just wish I had more time to pursue all of them hehe... I do love acting for theater and musicals tho and am in rehearsals for two performances atm.
Also I spend wayyy too much time on social media - dunno if that counts as a hobby tho.
What languages do you speak?
English obvi, German is my first language and I've learned some Spanish via school and uni courses. Also took a few lessons of Romanian, pursued Finnish via Duolingo to impress my sister (which did not work) and am trying to learn some Polish because that's my boyfriend's native language.
You can hang out with any fictional character for an hour, who is it?
An hour isn't enough time to really get to know somebody. So imma have to choose Toothless of HTTYD-fame because I wanna spend that short hour riding a cute dragon!
Compliment yourself
Hey Sära, you're badass and it's really brave of you to be so unapologetically yourself most of the time!
Aight. I forgot who I tagged last time and I dunno if you wanna do another tag game (I love talking about myself but that doesn't mean y'all have to), but if you wanna do it, feel free to tag me so I'll see your responses! 🥰

I’ve been working on my penmanship in Russian, as well as learning words and letters. It’s been hard, having certain letter look similar to ones in English but sounding different really does throw me off.
Right now, I’ve been almost exclusively using Duolingo for education and then occasionally looking things up along the way as they pop up in my course.
I’ve been watching a handful of videos on YouTube for help- mostly to show me how to write the letters instead of guessing- as well as looking up pictures of the alphabet and people’s writing.
Russian writing is honestly so whack. Sometimes you can make out the letters and other times it looks like someone just made loops and lines over and over again. I’m a little confused on how it’s supposed to work, but I wanted to share a few things that have helped me.
Tumblr media
[Image 1- Russian Alphabet, offers print and the cursive equivalent in navy blue, then the English transliteration phonetic equivalent in red]
So this image (image 1) is from https://russiainanutshell.com/russian-cursive-alphabet/ . I’ll be honest, I didn’t read this whole page just yet. But it looks really good. I actually just downloaded the photo off the internet a few days ago for personal use and then went back to get the link for credit and decided I should skim through the page. So what’s exactly what I did. But I like that it seems like a very personal and relatable webpage/blog and it appears to discuss just how crazy Russian cursive is.
Tumblr media
[Image 2- neat Russian cursive written in dark blue ink against a grid in red. This is handwritten]
For image 2, I won’t lie. I don’t know where I got this from. I don’t even know what it all says. I believe these are all just very basic phrases and I can recognize a few of them. For example, the first line is “privet-poka” (hello-bye) and the last line is “kak dela - khorosho” (How are you-Ok!). I can’t read the word exactly but I recognize it as “OK/fine), which would be an appropriate response to the question. I do believe this is from a video, however. I could take the time to sit down and write it out, but I am not going to at this very moment. Right now, I just wanted to look at and see an example of really neat penmanship. Handwriting where you can clearly distinguish each letter from one another.
Trying to find where this came from, I think it is a screenshot from a video… however, this specific image is from amazingrussian.com . I’m trying to put a link in to the exact page, but tumblr mobile isn’t letting me. Like the blog the at the first image comes from, this page is also dedicated to Russian learning. The specific page that image 2 comes from also discusses cursive and penmanship. It’s very long, I had just used the image as a reference for how to write the word “privet” initially and went back to find the source. Once again, I just skimmed the page. I do plan on going back and reading all of these the next time I decide to sit down and practice my Russian. Which will be sometime later today.
EDIT: A lovely user had helped me out and translated and transliterated the writing from Image 2 for me and I wanted to include them here. I also did not want to edit out my own ignorance. I did, however, correct any errors I had. Here is the translations and transliterations:
1.) “Privet-Poka” is “Hello-bye”
2.) “Zdravstvuyte - do svidanya” is “Hello-goodbye” but in a more formal and official manner
3.)”Spasibo - pozhaluista” is “Thank you - You’re Welcome)
4.) “Kak dela - khorosho” is “How are you? -Good/OK/Fine”
Since tumblr mobile is still not letting me add more links to this post, I’ll either reblog this post with more link OR if that doesn’t work, I’ll just make a brand new post with more links. I’m going to tag these all under the same tag to make it easier to find, which will be “Russian Cursive Part 1”.

Do you ever read a fic, and sure, it's not the best thing ever written, but you can literally feel how much someone loved writing it? Like, you'll read a passage that might have strange pacing or incorrect grammar, but you can see how much they wanted to get that down on the page and I think that's beautiful :)

A detailed but by no means exhaustive list of things that Returned! Arthur Pendragon would do within his first month in the present day:
Challenge a Karen to a duel for being rude to a retail worker
Hold a toaster at the end of a sword convinced that it is possessed by an evil spirit
Get Merlin to open his Wikipedia page and painstakingly edit it, only to be outraged when it is changed back a few days later.
He would absolutely despise public transport for no good reason.
Scream at the shower
Take a breadknife to the shop because goddammit Merlin how am I meant to go out without a sword!? I'm the king!
Be terrible at Mariokart
Be disturbingly good at Wii Tennis
Absolutely despise rap music but love synth music
Go shopping for clothes with Merlin, and buys them all from the women's section. Merlin makes the guy who laughs at him trip and fall in the middle of the shop
Be addicted to true crime and try and convince Merlin that they need to apprehend each and every murderer mentioned immediately
Arthur: there was a man in Whitechapel murdering women!! Merlin-
Merlin: that was over a century ago, Arthur.
Arthur: so what happened to him.
Merlin, giving the computer Arthur is showing him a murderous look while gripping a spoon: he died.
Arthur:
Smash an alarm clock against the wall in panic at 6.30 in the morning
Try and learn modern English through Duolingo

What’s on My Phone: Language Edition
Not sure if this is already a thing or not but I thought it’d be fun! A lot of people post “What’s on My Phone” and show their apps and stuff like that, so I figured I’d do one but for learning languages! I’ll give the app name then give a quick little description of how it helps me! If you see this, you should post your own too!
Duolingo: Of course, this is the Holy Grail of language learning. It’s the reason we all are trying to learn tens of languages at once— this app makes it so easy to pick up your phone and start building a linguistic foundation in almost any language you can think of! This is a free app.
Notebook: As someone who really struggles with organization this app is a lifesaver! I can’t just have a list of links or PDFs filled with resources— I need some sort of rhyme or reason to the mess. Notebook is amazing in the sense that you can create an individual notebook for each section (and make cute little covers for them!) and add virtually whatever you want to them. You can do handwritten notes (which is great if you have an iPad with an Apple Pencil) or typed notes/lists, and even URLs if you don’t have the info immediately typed up (I love adding URLs to helpful posts from Tumblr so that I have them saved for future reference). You can even lock notes for added privacy. There are lots of features to this app so I promise it’s amazing! This is a free app.
Tinycards: This kind of goes hand in hand with Duolingo. The words you encounter in lessons will be readily available on this app for you to study! Love it! This is a free app.
Quizlet: Great app that you can work on memorizing phrases (or literally anything else) that you can make more personalized to your learning style. Also, you can search through tons of premade sets from just about any topic if that’s what you prefer. This is a free app.
Wordreference: Hands down, best dictionary app I’ve used. I utilize this primarily when I am practicing Spanish, French, or Italian but there are TONS of other languages to choose from. It gives context for the words, slang, and even phrases containing that word. It really is a comprehensive dictionary. This is a free app.
Books: If you have an iPhone, this comes built into your phone. I use this to download PDFs and read them in an easy-to-view setting. I primarily use it to download books in my target language, but you can download just about anything you want to read. This is a free app.
Notability: This app not only is amazing for language learning but for regular school as well. It is designed to work with the Apple iPad and Apple Pencil, where you can take handwritten notes on blank, lined, graph, etc paper. You can even download templates (calendars, agendas, etc) or PDFs to markup/write on. I use this a lot for Russian because I download a visual of the Cyrillic alphabet and practice writing the letters right on the PDF. This is also great if you download worksheets for yourself because it’s easy to fill out. You can also type and audio record, along with a million other cool features. I can’t say enough great things about this app. Highly recommend. This app costs $8.99.
Pinterest: Kind of an odd resource I know, but I find lots of cute templates for studying or even language worksheets on here. It has tons of PDFs that could be super helpful. This is a free app.
So that concludes my list of apps that I use to study languages, although I’m sure there are some that I’m forgetting, and in that case I’ll edit them in later. This is a very general list because it’s meant to help people who are studying any language, not just the ones I study. I also am open to suggestions about any apps you would recommend and please feel free to make your own post about this and tag me in it! Hope this was helpful!

Ooh I have the cloud recesses as my phone background.
Are you vegetarian? I am (mostly). Meaning my family has always been vegetarian so that's how I grew up and now as an adult, I've tried some meat but only eat it in social situations with friends occassionally.
Oh yes the nightless city sky is soooo beautiful!! I noticed the same thing whenever I giffed the scene where lwj shouts Wei Ying!!!!!! as wwx falls 😈😈
I used to be a huge fan of Hannah Montana as a teenager! Were you?
I've almost escaped from essay hell! Just need to proofread and edit and then upload. Almost there 😅
And yes of course I'm trying to get more cellmates in thirsty jail. Spread the thirst! 🥵
I couldn't find the exact fic link I'd mentioned but I think it was this one? I'm not fully convinced since I think the summary I'd seen before had other stuff also mentioned but it wouldn't hurt to share this link anyway so: archiveofourown.org/works/26220175/chapters/63814693
What languages do you speak? Are you trying to learn any language right now? If not, is there any language which you wish you knew or that you've always wanted to learn?
A more random question: what do you look for when creating or customising your Tumblr theme? Are there any specific must-have features? Eg. For me, I need to have pagination and not infinite scroll. And I need tags to be visible and reblog+like buttons available immediately. And easy navigation links that I can customise. I'm kind of picky, lol!
oh you’ll have to show me which pic you used sometime! I think I got mine off of nsmgroup’s twitter~
yup yup, have been my whole life (minus one experimental phase when i was rly young that i don’t like to think about)! same, it’s how i was raised & my whole family’s vegetarian too~
i’m a sucker for a pretty sky~ whenever we get nice pink clouds here or anything i always gotta go out and take pics lol. (and how many times have you giffed it omg u masochist!!)
oh for sure! you know i watched disney channel and bought those albums, lmao. though it might’ve been more pre-teen era for me? but yeah i think my faves were hannah montana, wizards of waverly place, and suite life (i must’ve watched the original but i have more memories of suite life on deck since that came later)~ i also watched sonny with a chance and then so random after~ & i was rly into high school musical, ofc. <3 that’s probably one of the reasons i enjoyed julie and the phantoms so much, is bc it’s kenny ortega and it has hsm vibes~ we need more fun musical shows and movies, honestly…
ah yay! do you have a celebration planned for when you finish? 😄
tsk tsk tsk, your pro-thirst agenda never rests… 💜
oh damn, 73k… 😳 i’ll file that one away for later, lmao.
i’m a monolingual loser, unfortunately 😔 love the idea of speaking another language, lack the motivation to follow through (story of my life alkdf). all i’ve got is a few phrases in korean, thai, and chinese i can recognize from being into kpop and watching dramas. the language i want to learn rly depends on what i’m into at the moment, but right now it would be korean and chinese. chinese just seems sooo difficult tho; it scares me alkdf. korean i feel like isn’t that bad, just based on what i know so far~ that is always a goal i have in my mind tho, to at least open up duolingo every once in a while, i just haven’t been able to get serious about it. i think i’ve always been interested in languages, but aside from being forced to learn spanish in elementary school (of which i obtained 0 knowledge after 5-6 years; everybody disliked the teacher and no one learned anything lmao), and taking like one french class, i don’t think i ever rly had a particular language i wanted to learn until i got into kpop~ i definitely wish i’d managed to learn one when i was young, since i’ve heard it gets harder as you get older, especially when it comes to accurate pronunciation, but oh well…
ooh that’s a good question bc i just recently gave this blog a theme for the first time ever!! i think i agree with everything you mentioned~! actually here are my notes from when i was looking for a theme lol: “one column, probably not too narrow, not centered, but to the right with the side bar to the left of it. a side bar that’s more gif-heavy than words-heavy (i want to showcase a good-sized gif of xue yang + pinky there). probably not too colorful, but black and white, to go with the content/theme of my blog. not super fun & sunshine and rainbows-y, but not too boring and businesslike either. no infinite scrolling. search bar is a must (rip maybe i can add one TT).” i still haven’t figured out how to add a search bar, rip… it also depends on the vibe of the blog, like i love colorful themes but they don’t rly suit this url, lmao. but i’d love to use a more fun theme on my other side blog~

I'm going to pretend @overlyelegantstranger tagged me... 1. Nickname: Mouse is my longstanding online nickname, and for a bit less, DT (for Darth Tenebrous, actually, given my URL) ...actually I spelled Adrien the way I did because I've an OC who shortens her (different) name to "Ien", but I haven't found it convenient to introduce, nor convinced myself it refers to me. 2. Zodiac sign: I'm supposedly a Taurus; actually the sun was in Aries at my birth, and while those often suit me in tumblr astrology, I resent the assigned nature of it all so uh... also no. 3. Height: Five four, maybe five foot five if I'm lucky and standing particularly straight 4. Hogwarts house: Mostly Ravenclaw, with some Slytherin sympathies and a newfound appreciation for Hufflepuff. I will actively resent Gryffindor colors unless you tell me they're actually Shuos (even though I would probably be a Nirai, if anything, in the hexarchate. But I love certain of my foxes.) and/or somehow Sith. 5. Last thing I googled: "Nebuchadnezzar poisoning", because @piermanwalter reminded me of an anecdote in The Disappearing Spoon about how the eating grass thing might have been prompted by inadvertent poisoning. I didn't remember which element; turns out it's lead AND antimony. 6. Favourite musicians: Idk; Over the Rhine are up there, and lately The Mountain Goats. I've also seen Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura in concert, so I suppose they're up there. Vienna Teng, Regina Spektor... This is an incomplete list. 7. Song stuck in my head: the phrasing of this question keeps putting some song I don't even really know that has "over my head, over my head" in it? But really it's OTR's "And Can It Ever Be?", with which I am a little obsessed anew, because: "This night is so dark/this night is silence, and very little fear/tell me that this welcome peace/isn't dancing with the ghost of future tears" 8. Following now: four hundred ish? I'm going to check and come back and edit. The vast majority of whom are inactive and/or not personal blogs. 9. Followers: I think this is around 500, although I am/may be long overdue for a purge of spam/porn blogs 10. Do I get asks: Mostly only when I ask for them. But occasionally. 11. Amount of sleep: I gravitate towards about 8 hours. I am practically nonfunctional normally on much less than 6, and lately, thanks to um... anxiety, even getting by on 6 is difficult. 12. Lucky number: ...in some ways π, in some ways e 13. What I’m wearing: Star Trek ~lounge pants I made from Enterprise/"Star Trek" print fabric, and an oversized t-shirt I got when I participated in a litter cleanup 14. Dream job: uhhh something involving as many as possible of: sci-comm, math or programming tasks, a result helpful to people, and maybe a bit of domestic travel now and again?? Idk, I seem to change my mind on this frequently and don't really have a good or set idea. 15. Dream trip: I think the idea I'm most into at the moment is one day, hoping the present situation doesn't actually end service for good, is riding the uh "Empire Builder" Amtrak route through the northern US. Aside from that, I recently went to West Virginia and western Pennsylvania and would enjoy going back and also I am (except for quarantine concerns) almost always up for a road trip to Michigan. 16. Favourite food: this is not something I am good at deciding. There are too many good ones. Something, such as I had for dinner, involving potatoes, corn tortillas, and some peppers and tomatoes (or tomatillos in something else) and cheese as seasoning is my idea of great comfort food. I appreciate a good meatloaf but I also really don't mind eating vegetarian meals on a regular basis, given they're something I like. 17. Instruments: um. I can kinda play a few pieces, with idiosyncratic timing, on keyboard/piano and that's about it. I don't fluently read music though I might be able to work through something in treble clef. I recently acquired a cheap ukulele but I am struggling with tuning it, or understanding how it's used in songs or... 18. Languages: rusty, at best I was almost capable of halting conversation, German and Spanish. I have the Duolingo Latin tree but I don't think it's um... that extensive. I have learned a little Russian and beyond that just... too many interests, without much time being devoted to any of them. 19. Favourite song: I'm into "And Can It Ever Be?" anew, as I said above; also more recently "Your Honor" and "Ghost of Corporate Future" off Soviet Kitsch (aand, a bit awkwardly, "Hotel Song"). "You Or Your Memory" "Dance Music" "This Year" and "Up the Wolves" (which is to say that basically the larger part of my album rotation lately is Soviet Kitsch, The Sunset Tree, and Till We Have Faces)... 20. Random fact: I have been watching retro computer repair videos lately (Adrian's Digital Basement esp) and they've made me kinda want to learn to solder. Though I'm not sure whether I'll look into this before we're past current events or not. (Probably I'd start with some of the kits from Evil Mad Scientist Labs) 21. Aesthetic Standing in a broad-shouldered greatcoat surveying a wintry landscape, perhaps feeling powerful, but with a note of melancholy and humility to it. Welcoming a dear friend in, pet in arms, with an array of beautiful if homely chopped vegetables and prepared ingredients inside waiting to be cooked up. A hobbit math professor relaying an algebra theorem or a physics application. Walking near a wetland in a flannel, among the trees and wildlife.

Questions Meme!
Hello, yes, this HAS in fact been sitting in my drafts for ages and ages. Thank you to both @crazy-fruit and @ruby-red-inky-blue for tagging me and for waiting forever for me to answer (oops)! I’m sorry I took so long, but y’all ask really good questions and I had to think about some of them!
Question Set 1
1. How are you?
Oh, I’m doing alright! Thank you for asking. The earlier part of this year was rather rough, but therapy has been helping. I’ve been rather busy these past few weeks with traveling, and my schedule going forward is rather busy, too, so while I’m excited for those things, I’m also excited for the eventual moment I can just relax.
2. What would you say are your talents?
Writing. Making fancy color-coded spreadsheets. I’ve been told that my super power is getting random (annoying) songs stuck in other people’s heads. Does that count as a talent?
3. If you had the chance to start your life again, would you take it?
NOPE. No thanks. I like where I am at right now, and I would not want to relive my awkward years. Er, at least, my more awkward, younger years. Cuz I’m totally still awkward. Just less awkward. I hope?
4. Which language would you like to speak instantly?
HMM. ALL OF THEM. It’s really hard to choose!
Language fascinates me, and in another life I feel like I would have devoted a lot more time to learning more of them. Unfortunately, I really hated German class in high school because of the teacher’s tendency to put people on the spot -- I think that is sort of inherent in a language class, but I get anxiety speaking in public.
Anyways, I suppose I’ll answer Turkish to this question, since spouse and I keep saying we’re going to try to learn Turkish via Duolingo. For the record, my HS offered six languages, which was the most I’ve ever heard of an American school offering, and I was always quite happy with my choice of German. (The others were Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, and Latin.) I do wish I had maintained my German better, and I that I had more time to learn Spanish.
5. Where would you like to be right now?
Honestly? I’m pretty happy when I’m at home. But if I had to answer where “else” would I like to be right now, out of the whole world? Being back on safari in Botswana is a top contender, as are a variety of places in Turkey, and also Munich.
6. What name would you give yourself?
I’ve always liked my actual name (Elizabeth). I know I go by Liz; one of my HS friends was quite stubborn and I’m a bit stuck with it now, but I don’t mind it. There are worse nicknames that come from Elizabeth. I used to go by Fiona online; I’ve always been fond of that one.
7. What is something you’re currently learning?
OOF, what a good question. I sorta blanked on this at first, and my first thought was uhhhh learning how to cope with my OCD??? I’m doing exposure therapy right now, ish. Emphasis on the ish. Also mindfulness. Does that really even count? I started a beginner’s knitting project several months ago that I never finished, does that count? (I just need to seam it, that’s what I’m putting off. I have knit plenty of scarves; however, this is my first hat.) I’m sort of teaching myself ukulele although I haven’t really learned any new chords or songs in awhile. I would very much like to take more photography classes with a focus on wildlife photography. That involves buying a new camera and... signing up for classes.
Question Set 2
1. What is a detail in a piece of art/a text that you like that you really admire?
This was very difficult, at first because it was like looking at a bin full of loose things and just seeing an assortment of color and being overwhelmed by it all, and then because once I did start digging around, I kept finding different ideas and it was too hard too choose.
Character-building: In the A Song of Ice and Fire series, when Arya starts working for the House of Black and White, Martin stops using the name “Arya” as she dons different identities. For example, he uses “Cat” for a bit, among other names. It shows she’s trying to be someone else, but the caveat is that there are still little mannerisms and such that show she hasn’t really left Arya behind (I think maybe she bites her lip or something? I don’t remember specific examples because it’s been over 5 years since I read these books, but I do remember really appreciating the general technique at the time).
Music: In The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” I love those repeated arpeggios, over and over, building, intensifying, as the white noise comes in and you can just feel the heaviness of desire, of want... (and then I love how it just breaks so suddenly! And I know it wouldn’t have been intended this way because that’s the end of side one, but since I listen to the whole album on spotify, then those bright chords of “Here Comes the Sun” come in and god Abbey Road is the best Beatles album)
Writing: the poetry of Florence + The Machine’s “All This and Heaven Too,” obviously, since literally the title of my blog comes from that. I’d quote that whole song honestly. There’s something that speaks to me about the incapability of language to fully encompass just... everything. I mean, love in specific here, but also just everything. Words are just these little boats we put meaning on and we hope they make it to the other side but everyone takes ‘em a little differently.
Like, look at this:
And the words are all escaping, and coming back all damaged And I would put them back in poetry if I only knew how
And this:
Words were never so useful So I was screaming out a language that I never knew existed before
Anyways, there’s also something just incredibly soothing about the music, too, and how she sings the song. There’s another line, from Sara Bareilles’ “Miss Simone” that goes “How does she know what a heart sounds like?” which pretty much sums up how I feel about “All This and Heaven Too” (and also many of Sara Bareilles’ song, especially that particular album, but I digress).
Anyways I did have some art examples, but I think I’ve rambled long enough.
2. Is there an idea that you really liked but had to discard because you couldn’t get it to work?
If I really like an idea, I don’t really “discard” it so much as put it on the shelf to attempt later. Out of recent fic ideas, I’ve really struggled with “How to Lose a Spy in 10 Days.” I first thought of this in late spring 2017, and for awhile I couldn’t stop thinking about it, but I was working on Whatever I Do at the time, and wanted to wait before starting another WIP. By the time I got to writing this, the inspiration well had sort of dried up.
I really like the idea of a fun cat-and-mouse rom-com idea where Jyn and Cassian keep outsmarting each other, with a whole lot of competency kink, some “oh shit we actually work well together!” and maybe some battle couple. And I was really looking forward to both the moment when they both finally let their guards down around each other and the big confrontation when they actually find out each other’s identities. But it involved more mission writing than I was prepared for, and I really struggled with it. I think I need to start over but that involves a lot of working, so it’s unfortunately shelved for now, and I’m working on a “You’ve Got Mail” concept instead.
3. Is there something fandom-related you would like to be able to do (i.e. I’d like to be able to make gif sets but can’t)?
Oh, yes, absolutely! Really anything that’s not writing related, lol. Gif sets, art, etc. But most of all, I have a music video idea for the song “So Close” from Enchanted--like I have a whole story board plotted out in a google doc. But I don’t have any video editing software, don’t even know how you get the scenes for a music video, etc. I have made videos before, but not since high school, and I don’t even have the cheap, basic video editing program I used back then. Sometimes I think I should just attempt make a gif set instead, but there are so many lyrics! and scenes that go with the lyrics! that I don’t know how to consolidate it into that format anyways.
4. What is a skill you’ve acquired through fandom work?
Hmm, this was tough. I’m going to say HTML. I’m not up-to-date on webdesign at all, but back in my early fandom days, I ran a few fansites. I still sometimes use HTML while leaving comments or to edit posts on dreamwidth or w/e. It’s super basic, but it has helped me at work at a variety of jobs. I take it for granted that people my age should know basic HTML, but a lot of them don’t, and then a lot of people I work with now are older and definitely not tech savvy.
5. Do you think anyone can learn to create great art, or does it take talent?
Well, I’m going to cheat a little. I do think think that anyone can learn to create great art, but I also think that everyone has a talent at something, and part of learning to create great art is recognizing your skill sets and honing those. If that makes sense? I’ve sort of seen both sides to this. I’ve seen naturally talented people create great things, but I also think that they’re probably cheating themselves if they’re not learning and honing their craft and trying to get better. But I’ve also seen people who started out making things that maybe you wouldn’t call great, but they worked hard over and over again, and looking at their work now, you’d say they were talented without ever knowing the difference. Great art = talent + learning + passion. Did that even answer the question? ...moving on
6. Do you prefer AUs or in-universe? Why?
I prefer to write in-universe, for sure. I find modern AUs more challenging, mostly because--and I feel kinda bad saying this--it’s very difficult for me to tap into Jyn and Cassian’s characters without some kind of tragic background. Their experiences and how they coped with them shape their personalities, and it’s really hard to separate them from those. My WWII was easier because, hey, it’s war, not so different from in-verse. But I initially tried to write Learning Curve in a modern AU and I was just totally bored. Putting it in universe made it more interesting to me, especially having to finagle a happier plot inverse. IDK, it might even be that I generally struggle to make up any conflict in modern AUs that feels interesting.
THAT SAID, lol, I definitely read either. So it’s probably strange for me to be hung up on it because I’ve read nice fluffy modern AUs and found them perfectly engaging.
Tagging: @theputterer, @magalis, @allatariel, @mythologicalmango, @threadsketchier  MY USUAL DISCLAIMER APPLIES: no pressure if you just don’t wanna, AND if anyone sees this and was like “aw hey i wish she’d tagged ME” well guess what, I wish I did too! so go ahead and do it and let me know and then i’ll know to tag you next time, too :-)
Questions:
When you suffer a setback or a series of setbacks when creating (writing, drawing, knitting, any kind of crafty project thing you work on... even work), what are some strategies you use to cope with that stress and move forward?
What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to create/make and what did you learn from it?
What part of a bicycle would you be?
What’s a helpful writing (art/crafting/work) technique you’ve learned?
What’s a piece of art that made you see things differently?
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
What was the last board game you played and what did you like or not like about it?
*sorry these came out rather writer heavy!
