When the grandkids are at camp or some summer program away, I send cookies.
I don’t send any that include nuts or peanut products in case of allergies. Typically, the gift box is filled with the usual favorites: Fannies (thumbprint butter cookies) and Grand Finale cookies (oatmeal-raisin chocolate chip cookies).
Frankly, I was getting a bit bored baking the same stuff, so, although I did bake the usual, I also sent some Saint Cupcake’s Brownie cookies, from a recipe I got from a friend who once owned a bakery in Portland, Oregon. They are the best chocolate cookies I ever tasted.
And I sent these fabulous fruit-and-oat bars, which were wildly successful with the kids and also the grownups left at home (I made enough for a mob).
Next time you’re looking for a summer camp goodie box or just want a tasty snack — think of these. They also make a nice gift of Purim mishloach manot.

FRUIT AND OAT BARS
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups quick cooking oats
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
1/2 cup chopped dates
1/4 cup dried cranberries
13-14 ounce jar orange marmalade (1-1/2 cups)
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a 9”x13” cake pan. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt together in a bowl. Add the oats and brown sugar and mix the ingredients thoroughly to distribute them evenly. Cut the butter into chunks and work into the dry ingredients (with fingers or process on pulse in a food processor) until the butter is completely mixed in and the mixture looks crumbly. Mix in the apricots, dates and cranberries. Press the mixture evenly inside the prepared pan. Spread the marmalade evenly on top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool in the pan. Cut into bars or squares.
Makes 24-36

Weekly photo blog update! Ramble about these and life under the cut 😊
We found this amazing collection of books from 1945 about historical fashion second hand for super cheap! It's illustrated, in color, and in excellent condition, I'm over the moon 🥰 also the antique book fair is back in the city and we can't wait to go visit, I'll probably go next week so I'll share more later! although I really need to stop getting books, I've been out of bookshelf space for months now and they already took over half of the dinning table 😆
This little shop in the photos is where we get spices and dried fruit and it's very pretty so I thought I would share
Today we went out for sushi to one of our favourite places! It's venezuelan-japanese fusion and it's so so good, the drink is papelon con limon and I highly recommend it!
And last are these amazing thrift finds!! The skirt and sweater are perfect aaaaa I'm going to style so many autumn outfits soon after the weird heat wave passes, I can't wait!!
On a more depressing note, yesterday was my father's first birthday since his death a couple of months ago, and I also saw his tomb for the first time, my aunt sent me a picture at the graveyard and it's such a strange sight, seeing his name on a cross on the ground feels unreal. I try not to think about it too much, it's like if I stop running or look back it will catch up with me. We lit a candle last night with Nicolas and talked about him, it's getting easier to remember the good over the bad with time so I'm happy about that 😊
I hope everyone is having a great beginning of autumn!

I'm excited to give my coworkers their Christmas bags this week! In addition to the gingerbread pancake mix (complete with a tiny jar of molasses in case they don't have any at home) they're getting a mini fruitcake, a jar of applebutter made from the apples we harvested from our own trees, and some beef jerkey bites.

Civ. 4ee9 doodles for @crynkl , the creator of this glorious amphibian. You might notice her unusual eyes. The original ones don't exist anymore, so she got these fun fresh ones. Ask him about more of her lore if you're curious (highly recommend).

Red Tomato Jam
The Jewish holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah mark the end of the year and the annual cycle of Torah readings. This joyful “ending”reminds me of school commencement which comes after the completion of required courses but means “a beginning,” a celebration of accomplishments but with a look to the future.
We’re done; it’s time to look ahead.
With this in mind, this year my Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah menu will focus on the end of the vegetable garden I planted last spring and using the harvest in new ways.
All summer we were blessed with fresh tomatoes that I used for sandwiches, salads, pizzas and sauce. And fresh chili peppers that went into mango salsa and roasted pepper soup. But recently we had a horrific rain storm that more or less put an end to my garden. I harvested the not so beautiful end of season tomatoes and cooked them into jam: Green Tomato Jam and, with the ripe red tomatoes, this simple Red Tomato Jam.
This was such a delicious way to make use of what was left! It’s vaguely sweet, with a hint of cumin. So far I’ve used the jam for grilled cheese sandwich and also as a spread for a cheese board.
Next: a topping for either burgers or steak.
There’s more to come of course. I’ll keep you posted.
New beginnings.

RED TOMATO JAM
2 pounds tomatoes, preferably plum tomatoes
1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
3 medium scallions, chopped
1 chili pepper, deseeded and chopped
1-1/4 cups sugar
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add some of the tomatoes, cook them for 20 seconds then place them under cold running water. Continue with the remainder of the tomatoes. Remove the skins from the tomatoes and chop them into small pieces. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the tomatoes, scallions and chili pepper and cook for 4-5 minutes to soften them slightly. Add the sugar, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and salt, mix thoroughly, bring the ingredients to a boil and turn the heat to low. Cook for about 1-1/2 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, or until the mixture is thick and jam like.
Makes about 2 cups
