Yet another Red Bull team mate of Max Verstappenâs is struggling to be competitive, Liam Lawson having qualified last in China last weekend after failing to get out of Q1 in Melbourne. He joins a long list over the last five years. Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez were never this far off, but the pattern is unmistakeable: Red Bull has followed where Verstappenâs enormous talent has taken them. But itâs made for a car no-one else can make competitive.
This looks a lot like Michael Schumacher at Benetton in 1994/95. There was of course a lot of controversy around the electronic systems on the Benetton in â94 and it led to questions about whether his car was the same as that of his team-mates. But it was about more than that. JJ Lehto, Jos Verstappen and Johnny Herbert all had good reputations damaged by being his team-mate in a nervous car only he could properly exploit.
Listening to Max describe his car preferences, it sounds pretty much how Schumacher used to describe it.
Schumacher: âPeople say I like oversteer. I donât. I can handle it and drive it but I donât want it. With a neutral car you can have it sliding from turn-in to exit and all the time you can just drive on the limit of the four tyresâ given grip, and thatâs what Iâm always looking to achieve. I had cars that did that. With a little input you could make it go the way you wanted it to go.â
Verstappen: âI like a pointy car but with a rear that is just stable enough to have a controlled balance. I like a strong front end. I donât really like understeer. Itâs just killing the whole feel of the car. A strong front end with a rear that is just on the edge. But of course you still need that rear to rely on.â
It sounds simple, but what separates them from their team-mates is/was the feel for the transition, trading off rotation against scrub. Verstappenâs sim racing partner Atze Kerkhof is also an F1 driver coach and has studied intensely what Max does and how he makes it work. He relayed it on his YouTube channel. at 0:30:40
âWhen the Red Bull was a bit of a lazy car at the beginning of â22 it was very easy to drive leaning towards understeer. Understeer is a very boring way to drive a car because whatever you do with the brake pedal, at a certain point the car doesnât rotate any more. A pointy car wants to rotate more than you want and what Max does very well is he can balance the car that is too pointy for everyone else because for them it starts sliding. Max can make that car perfectly smooth and make use of that extra rotation and he can cancel it with his inputs in the points where he doesnât need it. ⌠the last five-tenths is dancing a very thin line, balancing the car and stepping away from the textbook style of aggressive on the brakes, very smooth coming off, turning at the right time. Thatâs still there in the basics but it needs to be adjusted intermittently in millimetres to have a positive effect on the balance.â
Intuitively feeling that point where the rotation needs to be checked, with just the smallest inputs of brake and steering, allows outrageous speed to be taken in without the penalty of time-consuming slides. Watching Lawson desperately try to make sense of the Red Bull in Shanghai, he would take the speed in and turn, only to then find himself correcting big snaps of oversteer. That sensitivity to a demanding car just wasnât in the same league. But put them in a less pointy car, Lawson would be much closer.
Red Bull has naturally followed Verstappenâs preferences in how it has developed its cars over the last few years. Just as Benetton did with Schumacher. But when Michael left and two good drivers â Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi â tried the car, they could barely control it and each suffered several pre-season crashes.
Some say Lawson should be given more of a chance than just two races and certainly thereâs merit in that. But conversely, perhaps the sooner he can get back in to a ânormalâ car, the quicker he can begin recapturing the confidence which has surely been destroyed.

The free market has given us so many exciting things to buy. From shoes to paintbrushes to electronic speed controllers, the sea of crap is deep. Once, long ago, "magazines" told primitive humans which of these products would be worth buying.
What few surviving records we have paint the magazine as a sort of flimsy book, capable of being read and then discarded. We do not have records on the kind of people who wrote for these magazines. The active theory is that the patients in mental hospitals were given the task of writing the articles, in exchange for television privileges.
This was required, academics now believe, because magazines needed to come out every single month. Our ancient civilization was too busy driving cars and starting world wars to be able to dedicate that kind of time to doing a tight 800 words on Martha Stewart's new soup in just a few weeks. That name may seem unfamiliar. Martha Stewart was an ancient criminal warlord who stood over an empire of a hundred thousand damned souls in what she called the "Home Shopping Network," itself a prototypical form of today's hypercapitalism.
Some of our researchers, poring over the surviving issues of magazine, have remarked that they wish to create their own independent print periodical. The central planning committee has decided that would be a great idea. Adding a magazine would create a new thing to buy! There is only one problem. Without a magazine, there is no way to know if that magazine is worth purchasing.
In a truly unfortunate twist, a second researcher decided to start a new magazine reviewing other magazines. Then a third offered the concept of a magazine to review magazine review magazines. This created a chain reaction effect, and an entire arcology of researchers had to be scrubbed off the face of the Earth by matter-erasers before the contagion could spread any further. Perhaps we do not need to buy this particular thing.

don't worry i would never laugh at people asking questions because i rarely laugh in the first place
the current major components of the pu (and their allowable allocations per season) are:
the internal combustion engine (currently the v6) -> 4
the motor generator unit-kinetic (mgu-k) -> 4
the motor generator unit-heat (mgu-h) -> 4
the turbocharger (tc) -> 4
the energy store (es) (aka the battery) -> 2
the control electronics (ce) -> 2
the exhaust (ex) -> 8 per set
i will go through them one by one. i'm not going to list every single component connected to them because that would take way too long and honestly isn't necessary... i'm just listing the most relevant things, if you look up an actual f1 car there will be more going on than what i'm saying here.
the ice is the primary source of power. it turns fuel into kinetic energy. combustion engines are very common but can get quite complex, especially one that operates at such high efficiency like f1's... but the basic idea here is that it operates in a four-step cycle where air is taken in, compressed, mixed with fuel, then ignited. this creates a force which pushes a series of pistons, and finally this force travels through a few other components until it reaches the rear wheels to accelerate the car. the crankshaft is one of these; it takes the pressure from the pistons and uses it to drive a rotational force which is then used by the succeeding components.
the mgu-k is attached to the crankshaft and electronically to the es (battery). during braking, it harvests energy from the rear that would otherwise be released as heat to put into the battery. (it cannot harvest energy from the front) when accelerating, it can then redirect energy from either the battery or the mgu-h into the crankshaft to add extra torque. there is a strict limitation on how much power the mgu-k can contribute, but the 2026 regulations are increasing this massively (like 3x the amount). also the mgu-k is why f1 cars can self-start when stalled mid-race, as even if the engine is off it can still power the crankshaft so long as there is energy in the battery.
the turbocharger is attached to the ice's exhaust manifolds and is composed of a turbine and a compressor. the exhaust gas from the ice rotates the turbine which activates the compressor. the compressor compresses incoming air before it enters the engine for combustion, allowing for more air to be taken in overall. basically it makes the engine more efficient without it becoming too heavy or large.
the mgu-h is mechanically attached to the turbo's central shaft and electrically connected to the battery. it harvests otherwise unused heat from the exhaust gases and sends it to either the mgu-k or the battery. back in the old days before the mgu-h existed and turbos were far less efficient, drivers would need to sit on the throttle to keep the it running. nowadays the mgu-h is used for this, as it can use energy from the battery to control the turbo's speed, including when at low revs. the mgu-h is the component being ditched for 2026 and is the reason why the mgu-k's capacity is being beefed up (to compensate for its loss).
the energy store is the battery. energy harvested by the motors is stored here until deployment. the battery (and the ce) are comparatively small, flat, and very efficient because they need to rapidly charge and discharge energy according to the driver's inputs. when people refer to f1 pus as being hybrid, they're referring to the mixture of power from the ice and the electrical energy from the mgu units that is stored in the battery.
the control electronics that's being referred to here is what converts the energy from the motors into an energy format that can be stored in the battery and vice-versa. this is not the same as the ecu, which is a standardized controller for the electronics of the car (such as the braking system), despite the confusing names.
the exhausts are attached to the engine's exhaust ports. they are divided into sets, with three on either side of the engine and then a connection to the turbo.

a little essay on how i understand photography exposure to work because. like. itll force me to conceptualize more clearly. you get it
three stages: aperture, shutter, sensor
there is an order to how cameras experience light: aperture -> shutter -> sensor. in terms of clarity, each of these settings have settings.
aperture
the aperture controls the clarity of image by controlling the angle of how light enters the lens (measured in "f-stops": low f-stop = wide aperture and vice versa). light entering the lens indirectly (not going straight into the sensor) bounces around, producing what you see as depth of field. restricting the aperture makes the angle of entry for light more acute, and so light cannot enter as indirectly, thus sending more light straight to the sensor without any diffusion. this restriction however literally reduces the amount of light that can enter the lens, and so the tradeoff of full-image clarity is low luminosity.
shutter
the shutter determines the amount of light the sensor is exposed to over time (measured in fractions of a second). mechanical shutters block most of the sensor from light, only allowing a sliver of light between the blades in as the shutter scrolls across sensor; electronic shutters simply turn the sensor on for however long its supposed to. a fast shutter speed only lets a single moment in at the cost of a less light reaching the sensor (darker images), while a slow shutter speed lets many moments and thus much more light in at the potential cost of blurriness. the tradeoff is, again like the aperture, high clarity versus low luminosity.
sensor
sensor... sensitivity... is basically the gain applied to the light which hits the sensor, termed ISO. ISO originally comes from film [emulsion] speed, or how sensitive the camera film is to light (and it's measured in whole numbers from like 200-25600 or something like that, not sure why--definitely something to do with film). a highly sensitive film emulsion needs less time to fully develop, but without control can cause overexposure, and also emphasizes inconsistencies in the texture of the film itself, which is seen as noise or film grain. digital cameras sought to emulate film ISO by giving users control over the gain of the sensor. increasing gain boosts the total light levels of the image at the cost of also boosting the inherent digital noise present in the electronics of the sensor. ISO gives one some final control over the luminosity of the image (and in film the speed of development) at the expense of graininess. once again, in a manner of speaking, high clarity against low luminosity.
exposure triangle or trading off
since each stage of light modification (lens -> aperture -> sensor) controls luminosity for the next stage (as well as the final product), if one wants "clarity" in general, there is almost always a necessary tradeoff between the primary quality (luminosity) and secondary qualities (depth of field, blurriness, grain).
since each stage of photography modifies the total amount of light in the final picture, there is nearly always a tradeoff occurring in the process of photographing. the primary quality, luminosity, must be preserved in order to successfully take a photo (or else you won't have enough light to see it). if you don't have enough light to begin with, some sacrifices must be made at one, two, or all of those stages to have enough light. how you prioritize these settings moves you around the inside of the exposure triangle (google an image of it, you'll understand).
photographing motion clearly
so for photographing runners in an indoor track, for example, you probably don't want a low shutter speed. that makes it impossible to make out the individual forms of the runners. but since you're indoors, you likely don't have enough light to work with. so you give priority to a shutter speed that will give you clarity of the runner's movement. this reduces the total amount of light getting to the sensor, and you're in a relatively dark environment and need to brighten the image up. you can't choose an extremely shallow depth of field because you need to be far enough away to get their full body into the camera, and you can't boost the ISO too high because everyone thinks graininess is unprofessional. so you need to modify both, such that you maximize the depth of field without the runners themselves getting involved in the blurriness, and then kick up the ISO little by little until the image is properly (not underly or overly) exposed without being noticeably grainy. maybe you take a few steps closer to get a higher fstop, too.
photographing stillness clearly
let's say you want to do some nature photography, maybe some plains sitting at the foot of a mountain range at midday. you want everything from the foreground to the clouds in the sky to be clear. so we have to give priority to a high depth of field, which means setting our aperture to be as small as possible. this of course greatly lowers the amount of light making it to the shutter, so you must balance between shutter speed and ISO: if you know there's nothing really moving around, you can choose a lower shutter speed which makes up for the rest of the luminosity and keep our ISO still low. if the clouds are drifting somewhat fast and you have wind blowing across the grasses, however, you're going to need a slightly higher shutter speed so as not to blur these details and then compensate by boosting the ISO until it's either exposed properly or almost unbearably grainy. (it seems like basically every nature photographer is using denoising filters in photoshop anway...)
prioritizing two stages?
in the case you must prioritize two of these stages, there are basically only out-of-camera ways to save the photo. for low ISO + high fstop, you need both a low shutter speed and stillness of subject or tracking equipment (and probably extra lighting). for high shutter speed and low ISO, you'll want a low fstop, and so getting closer to the subject (and probably extra lighting). for a high fstop and high shutter speed, you'll need a very high ISO -- or really, extra lighting. it seems like in any case where you have to prioritize extreme settings for two stages you should really just look into finding better lighting.
conclusion
so in most cases you probably have to sacrifice at least a little clarity in two corners for gaining clarity in one. that's what the exposure triangle symbolizes. that's why it's important to know ahead of time what your subject will be and how you'll photograph it!
of course this is all just for the photographer's ideal of "clarity". there are beautiful photos which are overexposed, underexposed, blurry, grainy, smeared with motion, et cetera. but that doesn't mean you can't ignore the exposure triangle--there are very rarely photos anyone want to see that are just totally black or white. you have to adjust these stages so that you get actual, comprehensible lighting, both light and shadow

Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy Beta March 1st Update
We have just recently released the March 1st update to the public Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy beta on itchio!
This is one of the shortest spans of time between two big beta updates, but the changelog is still pretty expansive, a lot of quality-of-life stuff, clarifications, typo fixing, lots of focus on bug-hunting in general, so overall this version should be much easier to understand.
The biggest new additions are a bunch of new art pieces, and we finally finished the Module Writing Guide in Chapter 7, so you can use all 10 steps to help you get your Eureka Mystery Module Game Jam submission ready.
Now, we can finally start moving forward at speed again on copy-editing.

Removing Examples of Play for time and more importantly page count reasons. There is a small chance they may get added back in.Â
CHAPTER 1Â
Added an example of very rare circumstances where Ticks can just pass from a task without a roll or Scene change.Â
Adjusted some phrasing in âBe Prepared to Loseâ
Added âApproaching this Gameâ section
Added that if a Tier of Fear fear comes up mid-session that your investigator does not have on their sheet, you add it to their sheet in the tier that it makes sense right there mid-session.Â
Made it more explicitly clear that failed and partially succeeded investigative rolls should not give false information.
CHAPTER 2
Edited a mistake in the Chemistry SkillÂ
Clarified that a character cannot have multiple instances of the same TraitÂ
Clarified that even with the Did You Know Trait, an investigator can still gain bonus Investigation Points from other Traits.Â
Fixed a typo in the optional fears in the tiers of fear section
Slapped in a section that better explains how the character sheet works, will fix this up later
Clarified that My Glasses Trait gives a Contextual bonus and clarified Go With Your Gut
Moved âCreating NPCsâ from Chapter 7 to Chapter 2.
Really cleaned up âCreating NPCsâ and âMoraleâ and made it much more clear
Added Sunscreen to item list, for vampires.Â
Added a toolbox to the item list.
Added an option for trivial items to cost 1 Tick instead of a Wealth Roll.Â
Raised the price of campers and RVs
Added a section of the item list for additional property
Split First Aid Kits into three separate items, representing different levels of preparedness.Â
Added Emergency Medication, such an epinephrine, to item listÂ
Added prescription medication to item list
Added clarification that unless stated otherwise, most items include the means to use them, such as cameras coming with film.Â
Clarified that the WP price of vehicles includes the fuel to power them
Added more drugs
Added a paragraph about how WP costs are decided and how one might adjust them for different places or time periods.Â
Added a note about legality for weapons other than firearms
Increased the WP cost of certain electronicsÂ
Added remote control drone to item list
Added a separate item list section for Medicine.
CHAPTER 3
Clarified Epicenter Initiative and fixed typos
Added a lot more bullet point summaries
Clarified falling damage.
CHAPTER 7
Finished the âSetting the Stageâ section
Cut âConnections (Optional Rule)â for now. We might put it back in later, but the thing that this rule does is something that most groups have little trouble doing on their own, and we really need to reduce page count.
Moved âCreating NPCsâ from Chapter 7 to Chapter 2.
Reordered chapter 7
Removed âCharacter Moments (Optional Rules)â for now, might put it back in.Â
Removed âCar stalling Outâ Might put it back in.Â
Removed âClues direct the partyâ and âClue redundancyâ, might put them backÂ
Finally completely finished the mystery module writing guide but it still needs editing
Clarified that converting some âinvestigationâ modules from other games is not as easy as it should be.Â

CHAPTER 8Â
Fixed typo in the Wolfman âUnstoppableâ section
Fixed it so that the Wolfman âJust Built Denserâ section does not make wolfmen inherently be super tall
Fixed typo under the Curse section of Changeling
Clarified how the Manifest Weaponry Mage Ability interacts with other Traits.
New hunting table entry added (this one was from a submitter, those slots are still open, you can email us about getting your own custom hunting table entry at [email protected])
Added another new fan-submitted hunting table entry.Â
Fixed typo in âWhere Does the Blood Go?â
Clarified Telekinesis mage power and gave it an effective range.
Clarified that dogs canât own dogs.Â
Even further clarified that talking dogs are dogs.Â
Fixed typo accidentally saying that there were four types of investigators. This was because Mage used to be a separate category on its own.
Changed the default modifier for the Composure roll that vampires must make upon being exposed to sunlight the first time each Scene from +3 to +5. They will still potentially lose a lot of Composure to sunlight because this roll is also modified by the huge negative modifier that is affected by how much coverage they are wearing, but when starting at +3 it was taking way too much Composure for the monster type that has the least options for restoring Composure.Â
More art has been added.
