The heaviness of the Games always impacted him, but there was something about Linden that made him feel like there was a sinkhole in the middle of his chest. The feeling of responsibility not just for her life, but for Ellie's too. He precisely knew the feeling of having a parent torn away at the Capitol's hand. He was also acutely aware the hand he would have in it if he made any wrong decisions about Linden in the Arena.

He wanted company, so he found himself going to the sixth floor instead of his own. He wasn't sure when he'd started to think of Cat as his best friend, but sure enough, at some point in the last couple of years she was the first person he thought of to seek out support.

She wasn't in the common areas, but that didn't surprise him, it was late. He followed the hallways back to her room (same as his, just one floor down), and knocked on her door quietly. "Cat?" he called. "You there?"

Ace Bookclub Recap - Fire Becomes Her

I love to share ace book recs (it's part of why I run an ace bookclub) and this month we read Fire Becomes Her by Rosiee Thor. Book has been added to my Ace Rep Database.

Summary: With only a drop of flare, one can light the night sky with fireworks or burn a building to the ground -- and seventeen-year-old Ingrid Ellis wants her fair share. Ingrid doesn't have a family fortune, but at least she has a plan: Rise to the top on the arm of Linden Holt, heir to a hefty political legacy and the largest fortune of flare in all of Candesce. Her only obstacle is Linden's father who refuses to acknowledge her. When Senator Holt announces his run for president, Ingrid strikes a deal to spy on the senator’s opposition in exchange for his approval and the status she so desperately craves. But the longer Ingrid wears two masks, the more she questions where her true allegiances lie.

My bookclub really liked this book. There's a delightful cathartic element to the end we all got behind, and I believe this is the first book we've read that ends with a QPR.

There's a range of aspec characters, which always makes a book better, and we had a bit of conversation about Ingrid. What labels, exactly, define her? We had a bit of back and forth (my bet is birogreyromantic at least) but we all agreed she was some flavor of aspec. We also agreed, you know what, it's okay that we don't know. Ingrid's arch through the book really is discovering who she is and what she wants, and this felt like such a real, messy way of figuring out your ace identity: while in the midst of a relationship. (I myself have used my relationships as touchstones to figure my aceness out)

There's some beautiful conversations in here about trying to explain love outside of a romantic capacity and about how you shouldn't mold yourself to the expectations of others. I wish the world-building had been a little more thought out (flare is a source of power like electricity, treated like currency, is a consumable form of magic used for pleasure and policing, and also serves as how one votes even though it's a limited resource mined from the ground, which was a bit much), but for this book taking place on the campaign trail with some rebel action, it's the characters that you're here for.

Lee hadn't planned to Volunteer.

It was a nightmare of a situation, to be sure. Lee was forced to be on stage with the other Victors, including Linden, fresh off her win only to be in that damned bowl again. He felt helpless, looking out at the crowd of faces. All of them in danger. All of them at risk. All of them hoping against hope it wasn't them. No one's odds had ever been this good, but then again, so many of them had gone up from zero percent. How could you draw breath in a scene like that?

There was ice in the silence amongst the District as the anthem played to their unhearing ears, and ice in the glaze of their eyes as the propos video played. The Peacekeepers in the crowds and on stage stiffened visibly as the video concluded, and then it was all Linden. Poor, small, Linden. What a terrible thing. She could draw herself, again, and Ellie would be... no. Lee couldn't think of that right now.

In fact, he didn't get the chance to. Linden was clearly scared, but she wasn't about to defy the Peacekeepers with weapons on stage. Her hand plunged deep into the bowl. It rotated once, twice. What a concept. Lee had always seen the Escorts do that, and it had always felt so cruel. So pointless. To stir the names before drawing. After all, what difference did it make? It had always seemed to him a nasty performance, as if to say, See? It's all equal. But now he saw it differently. He could almost feel the fire on his own fingers as she dug deep, probably chanting to herself, Someone I don't know. Not me. Not my friends.

She called a name, and Lee's breath fell from his chest. He didn't recognize it. He instantly bit his lip, angry with himself. How could he be glad at a time like this? But then again, how could he not? It wasn't Bluejay. It wasn't Juniper. It wasn't Elma. It wasn't any of the workers at the lumberyards with him. It wasn't his father's old drinking friends. It wasn't Bluejay's first girlfriend, or the patient Juniper had mended at the hospital. It wasn't any of the previous names he'd heard before, ushered to their deaths, and left families behind. He didn't recognize the name, and he was grateful. It wasn't him.

Someone shuffled forward from the crowd. Lee couldn't make out their form properly - the Peacekeepers were so tightly surrounding them. Even when brought onto stage, the escort lined behind the Tribute, blocking them from Lee's view at the back of the stage.

But Lee once again wasn't given time to catch his breath, because Linden's hand was already in the bowl again. Who knew what her reasoning was - maybe she felt she needed to be equitable. Maybe she felt she had pressed her luck with the deep end of the bowl. Maybe she, like Lee, now saw the futility of the gesture and wanted nothing more to have the ceremony be over so they could move on. But her hand was barely in the bowl when she snatched a piece of paper off the top. Her voice was like a Peacekeeper's gunshot.

"Alder Reid."

Lee's head snapped sideways, his jaw agape, as he looked for Alder. No, no, no! This couldn't be happening. He looked for Forest, for anyone on that stage. This was unreal. There was no way. With all the population of Seven here, the odds of this were astronomical. It couldn't be happening.

His breath fell full into his lungs. Lee took a half step forward, but no further. A Peacekeeper behind him grabbed him by the waist and pulled him back. Suddenly there was no air in his lungs anymore - he felt the cold metal of a pistol press deep into his ribs, pressing the breath out of him.

"Don't," someone growled in his ear. "Don't do a damn thing. Or you'll die right here, and he will still go into the Arena." And then there was nothing. Alder was gone - a mob of Peacekeepers doing their dutiful jobs. Linden was gone, the Escort escorted away. Forest was gone, ushered into the capital building with the other Tribute. It seemed like it was just Lee, alone on stage with the entirety of Seven watching, as he lost his breath. It didn't come in gasps, it didn't come in heaves. It simply wasn't there.

The barrel of the gun dug further into his back. He followed its lead, stumbling forward. A second Peacekeeper materialized, grabbing him by the elbow. Then a third, taking his shoulder, then a fourth, jabbing him in the back to move. So he moved. He moved.

Something in his soul moved, too.

No, Lee Hatchett had not planned to Volunteer. But he had found a calling all the same.

Linden Understory (she/her). District Seven Tribute. Twenty-three. Daisy Ridley.

Growing up, Linden was always careful. whether that be in the literal sense (growing up surrounded by trees getting chopped down made you pretty situationally aware) or more abstract (always making sure there was enough money, to never run out). Linden always had enough, although the definition of enough was certainly nothing like the capitol’s. Her parents took care of her, their little house had enough blankets to keep warm, and though food money was tight, there was always dinner.

  Life wasn’t kind, but it wasn’t bad.

  Her parents liked her, even if they weren’t always around. They were busy, in the woods. An only child, Linden was left in their little home alone often, told to amuse herself and not to get into trouble.Until she got big enough to start working in the woods, hauling wood from the felled trees to the trucks that would take them to the train, or wherever it was they went. And then, she was handed a saw, and she was cutting those trees into wooden chunks. Pay was about the same, but she enjoyed staying in one place a lot more, even if it was an equally physically demanding job.

  She had her friends, though. The people she grew up with, the ones she gossiped with. And one boy, Barc, who she… well, they were a bit more than friends for a few years. Until the day that Linden found out she was pregnant. She told him the next morning, and while she hadn’t been sure what to expect (they were both so young, only nineteen) she had expected to see him again. But she didn’t. The very next day, he’d transferred away to another lumber yard. Last she heard, he was learning to operate those loaders. She could’ve followed, but the message was clear.

  He was out. She was doing this alone.

  Her dad died that winter. Cholera, maybe, or the flu. They never called a doctor. Something bad had left him coughing for days until he’d stilled, and then gone into the ground. Her mother and her both had to work harder to keep the food and the lights coming. And then, near the end, she couldn’t work at all. She could’ve tried, but her mom didn’t let her, insisting she stay home with the new baby: Elowyn Understory. And little Ellie needed her mom, so Linden obliged.

  Linden stayed with Ellie as long as she could, took care of cooking and washing and budget and everything she could. She was grateful to her mom’s working so hard for them both. Too hard, as it  would turn out. One day, Oaklynn came home from work on a stretcher. This time, unlike with dad, Linden called a doctor. Contact with a machine went badly, and while Oaklynn survived, she wouldn’t be able to work again. But she was alive, and Linden was more than grateful for that. Even if it put her into debt, even if she’d spend years paying it off.

  So back to work Linden went, and an almost year old Ellie stayed home with her grandmother. Linden had to work harder than she’d ever worked before, and mealtimes were thinner than ever. but it was worth it. She was able to provide for them both, the two best girls in panem. Linden counted herself lucky to be able to take care of them. And she would’ve been comfortable doing that forever, if she hadn’t been reaped for 135.

  Well, if she wins, she’ll be able to take care of them forever. So she better win, because who else is going to?

"Mr. Linden!" Ellie cried, careening into the library. 

"Yes, Ellistair?" Mr. Linden turned around from returning one of his own books, Oscar and Alphonse, to its proper place.  

"Mr. Linden, Sarah took the book." She slumped onto Mr. Linden's desk. "I- I don't think-" Ellie began to tear up. 

Mr. Linden climbed down off the ladder and put a hand on Ellie's shoulder. "I'm sorry. Sarah truly was the most promising of them all." 

Ellie nodded, wiping her eyes. "Should I go get it?"

Sarah tugged down her pencil skirt. She truly loved dressing for her future job- Mr. Linden's assistant.  "Sarah, are you paying attention?" Ellie smiled. "I said we're about to monitor the specials." 

"Yeah." Sarah smoothed her hair. This was it! Her big chance. All the special books had powers beyond her wildest dreams. Ellie grunted, pulling at the big, oak door.  "Let me help!" Sarah jumped up, pulling the door open. It opened much faster than she expected, and she fell backwards. Ellie reached out a hand, and Sarah took it.  

"Woah..." Sarah gasped. The room was amazing.... The air was heavy and misty. The carpet was made of moss, and she could hear birdsong in the distance. Oddly, there was only one book in the center of the room. 

"Still there." Ellie informed Sarah. "That's good. It needs to stay there."  "Why?" Sarah needed to know. This was such a strange room.  "We don't know. It gets... mad." Ellie turned and left, ending the conversation. But Sarah wasn't done. She knelt by the book, scanning it's leather cover, it's creamy pages. It looked almost new. The birdsong had quieted. The mist in the air felt heavier, somehow. The room was waiting.  

Sarah tucked the book inside her jacket, and hurried after Ellie.
