----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Their quiet moment together didn’t last long as half of Station 19 rushed into the room a few minutes later. However, they paused when they saw her lying in bed with the baby in her arms. Jo looked up to see Carina and Maya standing in the entryway with wide eyes and open jaws before Carina walked over to the three of them.
“Well Jo it seems as if you've had your baby already,” Carina said with a laugh as she stared down at them. “How is the little bambino and their Mama?”
“Her APGAR score is a perfect 10 and Jo’s been amazing!” Alex said with pride as he smiled down at them, she didn’t think he would stop smiling, and neither could she.
“They're doing great. Jo delivered about ten minutes ago so it hasn't been long,” Meredith said as she got up and stepped to the side as Carina came over to her. “Her heart rate was high and a little unsteady during delivery, but it's back to normal and steady, and the baby’s doing well, but Jo also tore and she hasn’t delivered the placenta, so I've been doing a fundal massage.”
Carina nodded as she came over and sat on the bed next to her. Jo popped up her legs again and Carina pulled the blankets up to examine her. The extra paramedics left the room and the ones that stayed averted their eyes and Jo was thankful for the privacy.
“It looks like just a simple second degree tear and it's already stopped bleeding and hopefully the placenta is on its way, thanks to Dr. Gray here,” Carina said as she pulled back but continued to massage Jo’s belly to try and get the placenta to detach. “Still, we should get you to the hospital.”
“Do I have to go to the hospital? I’ve already had the baby and everything, and you can just stitch me up here,” Jo asked looking up at all of them with a pout.
“Yes!” Alex, Meredith, and Carina all said forcefully.
They were a little worried that she would protest, but Jo just sighed and looked down at her baby girl, tracing the dark hairs on her forehead. Besides, the worst part was over and she had her baby. She was too tired to argue with them, no matter how much she wanted to stay and sleep in her own bed. She knew realistically that wouldn't be a possibility, since her bed was currently covered in blood and amniotic fluid. They might have to get a new mattress.
“You guys got a diaper and a car seat for the baby?” Maya asked as she unpacked some supplies for Carina.
“Yeah, there's a car seat in the car and I guess you can just grab a onesie and diaper from the nursery,” Alex said with an affectionate smile, not daring to take his eyes off Jo or the baby.
“I'll go grab it,” Meredith said with a shake of her head as she stripped off her gloves.
She walked down the hall to the nursery, opening the top dresser drawer to grab a diaper and a regular white onesie and hat that was probably going to get stained with meconium and blood. However, she knew they wouldn't mind. She also grabbed a robe for Jo, knowing she wouldn't want to travel to the hospital naked. Then she returned to the room. Alex was sitting on the bed next to Jo and both of them were staring at their baby girl.
They were completely enamored with their daughter. Carina worked around them and was between Jo's legs, making sure she wasn't bleeding out. Maya was next to her, handing her the things she needed, and Montgomery was placing an IV in Jo’s arm. They were all chit-chatting a bit, but Jo and Alex only had eyes for their daughter.
“How does it feel to officially be a girl dad, Alex,” Meredith said as she handed him the diaper and onesie.
“It feels good,” Alex said as Jo handed the baby over to him and he held his daughter for the first time.
His eyes held profound love for his daughter as he picked her up in such a tender cradle. Her long legs kicked out and she cried in protest of being removed from her mother. But with a gentle pat and a soft sway, Alex soothed her again as she curled up in his arms. The baby was the length of his forearm, although she was quite chubby and Meredith guessed she weighed as much as Helena did, if not more.
Looking at him, Meredith was suddenly reminded of Derek. Alex had the same look on his face that Derek had when he first held Zola and asked Meredith to adopt her; it was one of pure devotion and delight. She pulled out her phone, taking a picture of him and the baby. The picture also captured Jo, looking up at them with as much adoration for her husband and daughter.
“We're about ready to get going,” Montgomery said to her as Meredith nodded and put her phone away before she went to get the car seat.
Running down the stairs, Meredith intended to quickly get the car seat but was ambushed by all five kids at the bottom of the stairs.
“What happened to Aunt Jo and the baby?!” Zola demanded as all the kids started talking at the same time, while Luna started to cry.
“Did she have the baby?”
“I want Mama!”
“Is Aunt Jo going to the hospital?”
“Baby ‘ere?”
“Why was Uncle Alex so scared?”
“Is Aunt Jo gonna die?”
“Mama!”
Meredith held up her hands and took Luna from Zola’s arms. “Nobody is going to die! Your Mama, Aunt Jo, and the baby are okay. Your Daddy, Uncle Alex was just scared because Aunt Jo was in labor. In fact, she was so far along that by the time we got here, I had just enough time to put on a pair of gloves and call Alex back in the room before the baby was born.”
“Aunt Jo had her baby?” Ellis asked, as all their faces lit up.
“Yes, and that means, you two,” Meredith said, looking at Helena and Luna. “Have a new baby sister.”
“I h’ve a baby!” Helena said as she danced and wiggled excitedly.
“I wan’ Mama,” Luna said with a pout.
“I know baby, and your Mama is going to come see you in a minute, but then she is going to the hospital for a few days,” Meredith said, kissing her cheek and holding her close.
“Are they going to name the baby after me?” Ellis asked as she bounced up and down.
“I don’t know, but I need to grab the car seat from the car?” Meredith said, handing Luna back to Zola as Luna protested.
She ran out and grabbed the car seat and ran back inside. Her kids had settled the girls with another movie, although Luna looked over Zola’s shoulder at her with a pout and her sad big blue eyes. Meredith gave her a little wave and knew it would be tough for her with Jo in the hospital again, but she would be okay all right.
When she got back upstairs, a few of the Station 19 crew, including Maya, walked past her and told her they were headed back to the station while Warren, Carina, and Hughes would be taking Jo and the baby to the hospital. Alex smiled as he came over and Meredith put the car seat on the footrest of the recliner as Alex carefully strapped the baby in. She fussed a little bit, but Alex was able to soothe her again as he tucked the emergency blanket around her, making sure she was warm. Jo was also wrapped in an emergency blanket again as she was looking a little more pale than before.
Although she still smiled, Jo looked like she could fall asleep at any moment and Meredith wasn't sure that was just the result of her hard labor. “How are the girls? I heard Luna crying?”
“I think she's just tired because she hasn't gotten a nap yet, but Helena was very happy to hear that her baby was here,” Meredith said as they all shared a laugh. “Are you still doing okay?”
“She's delivered the placenta with ease, but her heart rate is a little elevated again so I'd like to get going,” Carina said with a sure nod that told her Jo was stable for now.
Warren and Hughes stepped up to her with the stretcher, but Alex was quicker and held up his hands to stop them. “I got her.”
“Are you sure?” Jo asked him as he put his arms under her back and knees.
“I got you,” Alex quietly reassured her as he kissed her forehead before he picked her up.
Carefully, Alex stood up with Jo in his arms and walked over to the stretcher. He set her down before tucking the emergency blankets around her and making sure she was comfortable. Then Warren buckled Jo in and Carina hung her IVs and they were ready to go. After Jo and the baby were secure, everyone carefully made their way downstairs. Warren and Hughes held the stretcher as they brought Jo down first while Alex and Meredith followed with the baby.
The kids were again waiting at the bottom of the stairs, but they moved away for the stretcher. Zola was still holding Luna and Bailey had picked up Helena, while Ellis stood next to them.
“Mama,” Luna reached out for her, but Jo only waved.
“Hi baby, I’m sorry I can't hold you right now,” Jo said as she waved at Luna who still reached for her and tried to wiggle out of Zola’s arms.
“How are you doing Aunt Jo?” Zola asked as she readjusted to hold Luna better.
“I'm okay,” Jo smiled at her as Zola let out a breath and smiled too.
“Did you really have a baby upstairs in your bedroom?” Bailey asked with disbelief.
“Yep and she's right here,” Alex said as he stepped down and showed off the baby to them. Their baby looked so tiny curled up in their car seat and had a familiar grumpy look as she stared at the people in front of her.
“She looks like Uncle Alex,” Bailey said as all the kids smiled and came closer to coo at the baby.
“She’s so cute!” Ellis exclaimed as Helena leaned forward to look at the baby.
“D’at my baby,” Helena said, reaching out and giving the baby a hug as Alex smiled and nodded.
Meredith captured a few more pictures as Luna hugged the baby too, but still reached out for her Mama. Jo gave in and motioned for Zola to bring her close so she could hug and kiss her. Jo whispered something into her ear and Luna nodded. Alex kissed both of the girls before they all went out to the ambulance. Meredith stayed back with the kids but held Jo's foot as she was getting loaded up.
“Thank you for delivering my baby, Meredith,” Jo said, giving her a sleepy smile.
“Of course, I'm just glad you're both safe,” Meredith said, as Jo smiled Meredith realized she was still holding her breath and let it out as she knew Jo was in safe hands.
They all got into the ambulance and waved her goodbye. Everybody got settled as Carina and Maya sat next to her and Warren drove. Jo looked over at him as Alex put the seat belt strap over the car seat and made sure it was secure next to him.
“Alex,” Jo said, looking up at him, the smile gone from her face as she put a hand over her heart. “My chest hurts.”
Alex reached out to hold her hand as his smile dropped too. His eyes glanced up to the heart monitor checking the rise and fall of the heart line, it was still steady, but slower than it should have been. “We'll be at the hospital soon.”
“Alright boys, let's light it up and get to the hospital quickly but safely. We got precious cargo,” Ben said as he flipped on the lights and they left the driveway.

It really upsets me the way people have been reacting to Meredith trying to cure Alzheimer's. She isn't just doing it for fame, or even to help the world, she is fighting for her life. She is fighting to save herself from the horrible fate she lost her mother to. She is fighting to protect Bailey and Ellis and Maggie. She is trying to save her family.
Amelia pushed back saying it would erase Derrick's work, but I think he'd care more about his wife and children not being ravenged by a terrible disease than his legacy.
Nick said she was choosing work over him, but she is fighting for their future. Meredith even said it, that she will love him for as long as she can rember him. If she succeeds that might be a lot longer than if she doesn't.
And Catherine, has she thought about what it would be like to watch Richard lose Maggie and/or Meredith to the same disease that took the last two women he loved? How could she look him in the eye knowing there was a chance to save the women he sees as his daughters but she squashed it?
Meredith is so scared, and I know she is because I am too. If I had any chance to find any sort of treatment for the dementia that curses my family history I would fight tooth and nail for it.

what's absolutely wild is the one episode where Ellis Grey is awake from her Alzheimer's she clocks Derek so damn quickly. like yes he was also right but this woman also knew the intimate power dynamics in the hospital and that Derek is Meredith's superior
Derek eventually proved her right in the end

“i see my world in your eyes,”
“our world…”
••
a little glimpse into my rewrite that’s in the works. despite what everyone says about merder, they are my favorite greys couple. in the show derek’s a grade-A ass and his behavior really turns you off of their love story but in my rewrite we see a completely different version of the derek we’ve come to know. merder is a slow burn friends to lovers trope in the best way, giving meredith a true fairytale.

I'm sorry, I don't care the complicated reasoning behind it, Meredith naming her youngest after her mother was dumb. So, so, dumb. It should not have happened. Ellis Grey would probably agree with me.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Jo looked for a way to ease the pain as she looked around the bedroom. She thought about lying down as the bed looked so inviting. But then she looked towards the bathroom and thought about how nice the shower had felt that morning. She walked over to the shower, quickly stripped out of her dress, and turned on the hot water. Jo let the water cascade over her body as she threw her hair up into a messy bun. She moved so that she was bending over with her hands on the railing. Alex had installed it after she came home from the hospital.
The next contraction hit a few seconds later and with the hot water on her back, it eased the pain a little bit or at least made it more manageable. Jo was able to breathe through this contraction a little better. Thus she was able to relax more after the contraction ended and closed her eyes as she rested.
Now she understood why all her patients wanted to labor in the tubs. Even though as an obstetrician it was a difficult obstacle and kind of a pain in the ass to get dredged in a bath of human fluids. But from the mother's perspective, it was so much easier.
Jo let out a sigh of relief as she looked at her bump in the reflection of the glass. She wanted to memorize how it would look for the last time. Jo grabbed her phone and took a few pictures. This would be her last few moments pregnant, and part of her wanted to save it. Despite how much she also wanted it over. She looked down at her bump again and cradled it with her hand.
“Will I guess you made up your mind about when you were finally going to come out,” Jo said to her baby, except this time they didn't respond, although she could still feel them move a little bit. She knew they wouldn't be moving a whole lot while she was in labor.
“I can’t wait to kiss you, especially your cute little toes,” Jo said as she smiled, thinking about how she would be holding her baby in a few hours. “You're going to be brought to this crazy world, but no matter what we love you so much. Even if you are another little girl, your daddy's going to be so happy. He's the best daddy in the world and your sisters are amazing, although I can't promise they'll always be nice to you. I can promise that I'll always try to make them play nicely with you. And I promise I'll always be on your side, baby…”
Jo trailed off as another contraction hit her. She breathed through this one and stood under the water, counting down the seconds for it to end.
“For the sake of your Mama, please make this easy on me,” Jo said as she talked to her baby who awarded her with his strong kick as her contraction ended.
-------------------------------------------------------------
While Jo was trying to relax in the shower, Alex was downstairs frantically trying to make lunch and find a babysitter. He had already called Link but apparently, he was already at the hospital, and so were Amelia and Maggie. Even Jules the intern was busy, so he called the person he probably should have called first, Meredith.
It rang a few times as Alex spread the peanut butter onto two slices of bread so hard that it cut through the slice. He wondered if the girls would notice or care. They were pretty good about that stuff, but Luna was occasionally weird about it, and given her tantrum early he decided just to get another piece of bread.
Finally, Meredith picked up.
“Hey Alex what's up?” Meredith asked as she casually responded to him.
“Jo's in labor can you come over and watch the girls?” Alex said, getting it all out of his mouth so fast he wasn't sure if Meredith had heard him.
“Yes, I'll be right over, I just have to get the kids,” Meredith said as he heard her get up and yell at Zola and Bailey in the background.
“Great, thank you,” Alex said as he let out a sigh of relief.
“How far apart are her contractions?”
“They’re still about fifteen minutes apart so we got a little bit of leeway, but I want to get her to the hospital soon, especially because of her heart.
“Have you checked it?”
“No, oh shit,” Alex said as he looked over at the girls to see if they had heard him.
He had put on a movie and they were glued to the screen as they watched Elsa and Anna sing. He hoped it would distract them enough that they wouldn’t notice Jo in pain and him panicking.
“Okay, listen to me! You're going to go upstairs grab the heart monitor and put it on Jo. I’m going to hang up, but we’re getting in the car now and we'll be there in ten minutes. But call an ambulance if her heart rate is elevated or if it declines, then call me back?”
“Yeah, okay, thank you, Meredith. I don’t know what I'd do without you.”
“I know and you’re welcome.”
“Okay,” Alex said as they hung up.
He looked down at the sandwiches, in his haste and distraction he had put the two peanut butter pieces together and the jelly piece together. With a shake of his head, he ripped it apart and put them back together correctly. He still ended up cutting them weirdly. Thought the girls wouldn't complain. After adding carrots and chips with some watered down juice he put them out in front of them.
Helena looked up at him and smiled. “Thank you.”
But Luna just stared at the TV until he forced the sandwich plate into her lap. She looked down for a second, grabbing her sandwich and eating it with a quick thank you sign. With both of the girls fed and entertained, he ran back upstairs to check on Jo. However, he didn't find her in their bedroom.
“Jo, Jo where are you?” Alex called out looking around for her frantically.
“I'm in here,” Jo said as she yelled from the bathroom and Alex heard the shower running.
“What are you doing in the shower,” Alex exclaimed as Jo looked up at him with a glare and he immediately regretted his words.
“I am in labor!” Jo said, pronouncing each word to make her point. “I am allowed to labor where ever the fuck I want.”
“Fair enough,” Alex said, nodding. “But I need to put the heart monitor on you.”
“Ugh fine,” Jo said with a sigh as he grabbed the towel and held it open for her.
Alex helped quickly dry her off and Jo let him hold her hand and put one arm around her waist as he guided her to lay down on the bed. Jo let out a sigh of relief and closed her eyes as she lay down. Alex put the heart leads on her chest and hooked it up to the monitor. He also pulled out his stethoscope and listened. Her heart rate was elevated, but it wasn't too much of a concern. He also took a chance to listen to the baby's heart and smiled.
“Are they doing alright,” Jo asked him, opening her eyes.
“Yeah they're doing great and so are you,” Alex said, with a nod.
“Can I go back into the shower now?” Jo said reaching for the wires.
“Yeah,” Alex said, however, he only took the wires off and left the sticky tabs on, knowing that they would stay on in the water. He helped Jo get back in the shower and turned on the water as she relaxed.
“Daddy, daddy!” the girls called desperately, he looked back at Jo, who nodded at him, and knowing she was fine, he raced back downstairs.
“What is it, baby?” Alex asked, looking around his heart racing.
“Chips peas,” Helena said, holding up her empty plate to him.
“More carrots, peas,” Luna asked, looking up at him with a smile.
He realized they had no idea Jo was in labor, nor should they. Alex tried to breathe and put on a smile. “Okay, girls.”
Alex spent the next few minutes going back between Jo and the girls and waiting for Meredith to get there.
As soon as he got the girls settled with more snacks, he ran back upstairs to check on Jo in the shower. He held her through the contractions, although she was still standing under the water and was adamant about staying there.
He wrapped his arms around Jo, however, as soon as he did, the girls called back. They wanted him to watch the movie with them, then Jo was screaming for him to come back and be with her. However, Luna started to throw another tantrum as nap time approached and he had to help her and leave Jo yelling for him. When he got back to Jo she cried and begged him not to leave her as Helena called for him again, crying that Luna had hit her, and Alex sighed looking at Jo, who cried as he told her he had to go.
He went up and down, back and forth, between them. He feels like he’s running around like a chicken with its head cut off. The contractions were now five minutes apart and he was anxious to get to the hospital. He texted Meredith again, but she was still five minutes away and couldn't seem to get there quick enough. Finally, he saw Meredith's car pull up as he ran down the stairs.
“Thank God, you're here,” Alex said as he opened the front door as Meredith and her kids ran out of the car.
“Sorry, we got stuck behind a bus,” Meredith said as she came in before looking him up and down. “Why are you all wet?”
“Jo’s in the shower,” Alex said, as he pulled off his shirt.
“Uncle Alex, is Auntie Jo really going to have her baby?” Ellis asked excitedly as she bounded over to him.
“Yeah sweetie but first we got to go to the hospital,” Alex said as he grabbed the bags on the bench next to the door.
“Daddy!” Helena whined as she ran up to him holding her arms up.
“Helena I can't,” Alex sighed as he heard Jo’s moaning from upstairs, and he knew they didn't have much time.
“I got her Alex,” Meredith said, picking her up although Helena flailed back and cried.
“No, Daddy,” Helena cried, dissolving into a full-blown meltdown and Alex put the bags back down and took Helena from Meredith.
He held her close, she rested her head on his shoulder and her cries died down as he swayed back and forth. “She's just tired. They both are, why don't I see if I can get her to sleep before I go, she'll probably be out in a few minutes.”
“Alex!” Jo called from upstairs and Alex turned to go to her, but Meredith stopped him.
“I'll go get Jo out of the shower,” Meredith said as she headed upstairs. “Bailey, can you put these bags in Uncle Alex's car? Zola and Ellis, can you help Uncle Alex put Luna and Helena down for a nap?”
“Don't worry Uncle Alex, Mom will help Aunt Jo and the girls will be asleep in no time. Then you and Aunt Jo will be off to the hospital,” Zola said as she walked into the living room and sat next to Luna, pulling her into her lap as Ellis turned off the TV and closed the blinds.
Alex sighed again as he paced around, holding Helena. He begged the universe that she would fall asleep before Jo had the baby in the shower.
