Some times you just. I don't know. Things go much better than you could have imagined at the start. This is a Dutch Harness horse, rescued after being sold at auction by the Amish. Pulled shoes in March, and have been doing some pretty intensive rehabilitation work since! He's sound, his feet are so much healthier, and outlook is positive! Amazing what you can do in 3 months!

Part One; The Heart and Hardship of Animal Rescue: A Journey of Compassion and Survival
I often find people amazed by my extensive experience with animal rescue and street vet work, particularly when I share some of the most challenging and occasionally amusing stories. My journey into animal rescue began when I was just a toddler, following in my mother’s footsteps. She had been rescuing animals since she was a young adult, passing her compassion for animals onto me. Our…

"It had the ability to destroy anything it wanted but the desire to hurt nothing. It was physically perfect and strong and it was forgiving with its time, with me, and it was kind of compassionate in a way, 'cause he's a horse, he doesn't want me there, he just wants to be a horse. But he let me be there, and I found myself envying all these human qualities in a horse."

Evolving Equine Healthcare Practices - From Stable to Clinic
The global equine healthcare market size is anticipated to reach USD 4.37 billion by 2030. Increasing product R&D, demand for equine diagnostics, investments by key industry stakeholders, and the rising prevalence of diseases in horses are some of the major factors contributing to the market growth. For instance, in September 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture invested around USD 3.0 billion in the animal nutrition and health sector.

The Covid-19 pandemic had a notable impact, particularly on the horse racing/ sports sector. It led to reduced access to equine care services and the cancelation of equine shows. Teaching, training, competitions, events, tourism-related activities, and recreational activities were all discontinued as a result of COVID-19. Horse racing was adversely impacted across the world, along with the demand for horse boarding. Only Sweden continued to hold races within the EU. According to a survey conducted by Hippolia, French Equine Industry Cluster, 68.8% of respondents believed the recovery of the shortfall is impossible, and all equine competitions have been discontinued. A total of USD 385.89 million in sport horse losses were incurred as per estimates. However, the market recovered in 2021 owing to easing lockdown measures and improved access to equine healthcare.
Growing technological advancement, R&D, and initiatives by market players in equine diagnostics are key factors driving the market. For instance, according to a July 2022 article published by the American Veterinary Medical Association, a study was carried out to assess the diagnostic performance of a unique helical fan beam-based CT utilized for imaging horses with clinical head and neck complications. A total of over 120 horses were involved, and the medical records of those who had undergone head or neck CT scans at two university hospitals were examined. Age, sex, breed, the primary complaint, the amount of sedation utilized, the length of the operation, the use of any further diagnostic imaging techniques, the imaging diagnosis, the clinical diagnosis, and any imaging-related problems were all noted. The CT system proved to have short scanning times and reliable utility for regular imaging of horses' teeth and sinuses.
Furthermore, the rising prevalence of diseases in horses is another factor propelling the market growth. West Nile Virus, for instance, was positively identified in a 10-year-old unvaccinated Quarter Horse stallion in Nevada County who was exhibiting transient fever and neurological symptoms by the California Department of Food and Agriculture in September 2022. This was the 8th confirmed case of the equine WNV in California in 2022. Other positive cases were identified in six counties: three in Kern, one in Nevada, one in Sacramento, one in San Luis Obispo, one in Tehama, and three in Tulare. This is expected to promote awareness regarding equine diseases while fueling demand for timely vaccination of horses.

‘Ferrari in a junkyard’: Mules sold at auction are rare, endangered horses
Tumblr media
https://washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2024/08/09/przewalskis-horses-rescued-dna-shrek-fiona/
Hannah Huckabay regularly combs livestock auctions online for horses she can rehabilitate and train at her Colorado ranch. But when she saw a video in February of a mule for sale in Kansas, she could hardly believe what she was seeing.
The stocky animal’s short black mane shot straight up like a mohawk, and its white belly stood out against its tan coat. As it nervously paced in its corral, Huckabay said it bore a striking resemblance to Przewalski’s horse, a critically endangered species she’d learned about while studying equine science.
“I was like, ‘There is no way. That is not a mule,’” Huckabay recalled thinking. “That’s a purebred Przewalski.”
Such a find would be incredibly rare. Once extinct in the wild, around 2,500 Przewalski’s horses remained worldwide as of 2022. They’re native to Mongolia and in June, seven were reintroduced to nearby Kazakhstan as part of an effort to return them to their natural habitats. They are the only truly wild horse remaining (mustangs are feral horses).
But scientists say Huckabay’s hunch appears to be correct. Hair samples from the animal Huckabay purchased - along with a second horse recently surrendered at a Utah sanctuary - were sent to Texas A&M University’s animal genetics lab. Both appear to be Przewalski’s horses, said Rytis Juras, the genetics lab’s director who tested both samples.
The hair test looks for genetic markers associated with different horse breeds to determine an animal’s likely ancestry. Unequivocally confirming that the horses are purebred Przewalski’s and not hybrids would require advanced blood tests that are expensive and would mean sedating the equines.
The blood tests look at the number of chromosomes in a horse’s cells - 66 in a purebred Przewalski, versus 64 in a common horse or 62 in a donkey. An even more advanced version could sequence the horse’s entire genome.
But Juras and two other scientists who reviewed the findings said the hair-test results are reliable.
“If I would have gotten it from a zoo … that would be one thing,” Juras said of receiving the samples. But two random tests with Przewalski’s results were “surprising and a little bit disturbing,” he said. “This is weird.”
How the horse Huckabay found - and the second in Utah - ended up in livestock auctions is a mystery, said Christopher Faulk, a professor of animal science at the University of Minnesota who has studied Przewalski’s horse genetics and also reviewed the DNA results.
“Someone had to have known what they were, they don’t just appear out of anywhere,” Faulk told The Post. “Especially to have been disposed of in that way is even weirder,” he said, since livestock that aren’t purchased at auction can end up in slaughterhouses.
“That’s like finding a Ferrari in a junkyard,” he added.
Huckabay bought the animal for $1,375 in February and, after three weeks in quarantine, the ragged and underweight animal sold as a mule arrived at her ranch outside Denver.
Seeing its features in-person left her even more convinced it was a Przewalski’s horse, she said. With a large clunky head and stiff black mane, her daughter said the horse was so ugly, he was cute, Huckabay recalled. They named him Shrek, after DreamWorks’s beloved ogre.
After almost two months of helping Shrek acclimate, Huckabay’s daughter stumbled upon a video posted on June 9 from a sanctuary in Utah.
“Did we just have a Przewalski mare surrendered?!” the caption read.
Kelsey and Gunnar Bjorklund - who own the Lazy B Equine Rescue and Sanctuary in Utah - suspected their mare was also a Przewalski. But they had no idea there was a second possible Przewalski, saved from another auction.
The Bjorklunds’ horse was brought to their facility after being purchased for $35 in January at an auction in Utah, where she was advertised as a mule.
“It takes more money to get your nails done,” Kelsey said, adding that her previous owner decided to surrender the mare after she flunked out of a professional training program.
When the horse arrived and was unloaded from the trailer, “we were just in shock,” Gunnar said. It was clear the animal wasn’t a mule or a mustang, he said.
“Anyone getting possible Przewalski vibes!?” the Bjorklunds posted. “A true wild, endangered species of equine‼️ How cool would that be!”
In response to seeing the Bjorklunds’ viral video, Huckabay’s daughter posted her own videos of Shrek two days later. One got over 11 million views.
After coming across Shrek’s video, it was easy for the Bjorklunds to settle on a name for their mystery horse - Fiona, the princess-heroine from the Shrek movies.
The rescuers were stunned that two possible Przewalski’s horses could have surfaced almost simultaneously. The Endangered Species Act allows private ownership of endangered animals, but only with a permit, and under strict stipulations. The law prohibits the possession of illegally obtained endangered animals or their transport across state lines without permits.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declined to comment on whether officials are investigating the horses’ chain of custody.
Some livestock auctions have occasionally served as hubs for illicit trade in exotic animal species.
Because most Przewalski’s horses descend from only about a dozen surviving individuals, scientists closely manage breeding genetics for diversity. Compared to the feral mustang, Przewalski’s are more resilient, said Dolores Reed, a biologist who helps oversee a small herd of the endangered horses at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Przewalski’s horses are built for the Mongolian steppe’s harsh climate, she said, adding, “they’re very tough,” and can be unpredictable.
There are about 100 Przewalski’s horses in U.S. zoos, Reed said.
Shrek and Fiona are adjusting to their new environments, their owners said. After keeping his distance from people and trotting in circles in his pen while stressed, Shrek has relaxed and moved to a larger field. He has bonded with two gentle mares and while he won’t accept treats from people’s hands, he loves when apples and carrots are left in his feed bucket, Huckabay said.
“He’s very piggy,” she said.
In Utah, Fiona has put on weight and made friends with a miniature mule and a quarter horse filly at the Bjorklunds’ sanctuary.
The rescuers wonder what would’ve happened if Shrek and Fiona hadn’t been saved. The endangered animals might’ve been sent to slaughter “and nobody would have known about it,” Gunnar said.
Huckabay and the Bjorklunds plan to care for the horses as long as needed, but said they’d prefer to see their rescued Przewalski’s move to a professional conservation program.
Shrek is happy on the ranch, but Huckabay said she’d rather see him with “a herd of his own.”
“That would be the best-case scenario,” she said.

Hi! I have a character with monoplegia who loses use of their left leg after an accident, and I was wondering what kind of recovery tools/mobility aids would be most beneficial. One of the plot point also has them go to an Equine Therapy of sorts after as well, so if you know anything about horseback riding for disabled people or any resources, that'd also be great
Hi!
Monoplegia, as all -plegias, is a very diverse disability and there's definitely no one “correct” way to go about writing it. There are monoplegics who don't use any aids, and there are monoplegics who are full-time wheelchair users.
So typically, crutches would probably work for most people who are in otherwise good physical condition (no big problems with shoulders or wrists, etc.), but it wouldn't be unrealistic if they preferred a wheelchair or maybe even a cane; the latter mostly if their leg is spastic rather than floppy. If they do walk, a leg brace (AFO or KAFO) would probably be very helpful.
As for recovery, various kinds of therapy would be great to include. Physical therapy that focuses on rebuilding (or maintaining) strength, improving (or maintaining) flexibility, improving (or maintaining) control over muscles, working on preventing falling and improving balance, etc. A lot of this is done with very similar exercises as the ones that able-bodied people do for the same reasons, so things like stretching or swimming would probably be helpful. Other tools would be of course pain medication, as well as muscle relaxants if they experience spasticity and/or spasms.
Generally, monoplegia is the second rarest kind of -plegia (after triplegia) and there definitely isn't a ton of resources for it. What you might find helpful is looking for rehabilitation info around hemiplegia, and simply omitting the exercises that are there to help with the upper limb.
I could swear that I have personally answered an ask about horse riding while disabled on this very blog, but I've been unable to find it, unfortunately. This article from physiopedia is I think a helpful introduction to the topic, especially with the list of differences between hippotherapy and therapeutic horse riding (from what you're describing, I'm assuming you're looking for the former). You can of course also look for accessibility aids for regular riding, but it's a completely different beast than horse therapy.
I hope this helps,
mod Sasza

LINGER | rhett abbott x oc | chapter 1
Tumblr media
one: hey cowboy
SUMMARY: Rhett Abbott is stuck. He rides bulls, works on his family’s ranch, and probably drinks more than what’s good for him.
Lou Kinney is aimless. She never stays in one place for long, driving from state to state, and picking up odd jobs along the way.
So when she shows up in Wabang, Rhett’s life tumbles into free fall and Lou’s not sure she trusts herself to catch him. But maybe these two lost souls find exactly what they didn’t know they were looking for: each other.

He’s sitting in his truck in the parking lot of the general store the first time he sees her.
She’s wearing jeans, sensible boots, and a denim jacket. Her dark hair is in a soft braid that rests against her back. He watches her open the door to the cab of her truck. She whistles once and a black and white dog effortlessly jumps in, crawling across the bench seat and lies down.
Rhett doesn’t recognize her, figures she’s passing through town like so many before her. No one stays in Wabang unless they were born here, and this girl definitely wasn’t.
So, safe to say, Rhett’s a little surprised when he sees her nursing a beer at the Handsome Gambler later in the week. Even more so when he stops by the diner for coffee and lunch a week after that, and sees her laughing with Patty, who owns the place.
She offers him a small acknowledging nod when she passes him on her way out, her dog trailing behind her happily. Patty rarely allows dogs in her diner.
A month passes before he learns her name. He’s walking into the feed store when he hears Old Man Arthur call her Louisa. She corrects him and says it’s Lou.
She’s walking away, her dog once again following closely behind, when Rhett comes up to the counter to pick up their order.
Lou suits her, he decides.
A few days later, Amy comes skipping into the house, waving a piece of paper in the air with a bright smile on her face. Her friend from school is having a birthday party at Oak Creek Ranch, and Amy’s one of the select few invited.
Oak Creek went up for sale when Rhett was seventeen, and the Taylors bought it about a year later. A local family who traded their jobs as a nurse and a veterinarian for ranch living. They opened an equine sanctuary and rehabilitation center that’s become popular with people from across the state.
He didn’t know you could host a kid’s birthday party there, but as his truck winds down the dirt path to the Oak Creek driveway, he sees a banner announcing Sydney’s 9th birthday.
He’s late to pick Amy up. Perry was supposed to, but he was too drunk to drive. Rhett tries not to be mad at his brother, but it’s hard not to be when he’s neglecting his daughter.
He passes endless pastures and folds with grazing horses. A large barn comes into view, along with an even larger stable building. He knew the Taylors had renovated the place when they bought it, but it’s nearly unrecognizable to him now. He remembers having his first beer on the front steps of the then abandoned house when he was fourteen.
Seems like a lifetime ago now.
He pulls up next to a line of trucks in various stages of disrepair, but most pickups look worse for wear around here. Rhett looks at the house and spots Mrs. Taylor through a window. He can’t remember her name, but he knows she has two boys who are a few years older than Amy.
He lifts a couple of fingers in an acknowledging gesture, and even though the sun is high in the sky, he sees her smile as she waves back. The Taylors are good people.
He looks around, and a few feet away, at the end of a downtrodden path, is a metal round pen where he spots the back of his niece’s head.
Rhett gets out of his truck and makes the short trek down to where Amy stands on the fence to see over it. As he gets closer, he sees Louisa stand on the inside of the pen, her back turned to a black horse trotting wildly behind her.
She doesn’t flinch when it whinnies.
“Hey,” he says quietly, coming up next to his niece to watch the scene before him.
“Uncle Rhett,” she exclaims, giving him a hug as best as she can without falling off the fence. “Look!”
A smile tugs at the corner of his lips at her enthusiasm before he turns his attention back to Louisa, and the horse that has now slowed down to a walk. Rhett sees the fear in its dark eyes, but there’s a level of curiosity, too.
Louisa still doesn’t move, but casts her eyes upward, meeting his for a brief second. She smiles at him, and his insides feel funny.
The horse takes tentative steps towards Louisa, and all the muscles in Rhett’s body tense, ready to step in if something should happen.
But nothing does. The horse walks towards the center of the pen, and finally, after what feels like minutes but was probably only a few seconds, it stands at Louisa’s side and nudges her arm with its muzzle.
Amy cheers quietly as to not disturb the moment in front of them.
A grin splits Louisa’s face in two, and Rhett watches her dig into her pocket for a treat that she offers to the horse. The wind carries the sound of her soft praises as the horse chews the treat and lets Lou run her hands over its muscular body.
“That was incredible, Miss Kinney,” Amy says as the woman approaches the fence, horse trailing calmly behind her.
“Lou,” she corrects. “Storm’s a good boy,” she replies, casting a look at the black stallion behind her. “He just needs someone to give him a chance to be good.”
“Sorry, I’m late,” Rhett says before Amy can say something else.
“It’s no problem,” she says, and he can tell she genuinely means it. “Sydney only got picked up five minutes before you got here.”
“Thank you,” he saying, nodding at her slightly before turning his attention to his niece. “You ready to go?”
“Yeah,” Amy agrees and jumps off the fence, landing on the ground with a thud. Rhett offers a small wave goodbye to Lou, who’s watching him and Amy as they walk back to his truck.
“Bye, miss Kinney!” Amy shouts and waves at the woman who offers an enthusiastic wave back. Amy closes the truck door, and the world goes quiet.
He waits for her to put her seatbelt on and then makes his way back down the drive, the same way he came. “Did you have a nice time?”
“The best,” she says excitedly, launching into a long talk about everything that happened at the birthday party. She briefly mentions her other friends, the cake, and the presents, but most of her endless chatter is about Lou.
“That thing she did when you got there is called join up, and it’s so cool. She just turned around a let Storm do whatever he wanted until he trusted her enough to come. It was awesome!”
He chuckles as he opens the front door to the house, letting Amy duck under his arm to go inside first.
His Ma’s in the kitchen, placing plates on the dining table, but it’s only set for four. Perry is probably sleeping off his bender upstairs, the whole room reeking of alcohol and sweat.
Rhett frowns at the thought and tries to push the brewing rage down. He’s not above day drinking, has done it many times, but he would never do it over taking care of his kid.
It’s a realization that has crept up on him in the months since Rebecca disappeared and Perry changed into someone barely recognizable. He’s putting his misery above his daughter and there’s no one Rhett wants to protect more than his niece.
He kisses his mom’s cheek in greeting and goes upstairs to clean up before dinner, the sound of Amy talking about Lou fading with each step he takes. There’s something about her innocence that tugs at Rhett’s heart and makes the faintest smile spread across his face.
A couple of days later, Rhett rests his head against the rim of his beer bottle, trying not to move his bad shoulder too much. It’s been bothering him for a while, but the bull got the better of him tonight and he took a bad fall.
The slide of glass along the bar top makes him lift his head. In front of him is a shot of tequila that he downs with a nod towards Jimmy, who’s been a bartender at the Handsome Gambler since before he was born.
Homegrown cowboy almost lost the rodeo tonight. He’s lucky he didn’t.
“It’s Rhett, right?” A soft voice says as a warm body sinks down on the seat next to him.
He hums in agreement, turning his head slightly to face her. He recognizes her voice immediately. It’s been ringing in his ears since he first heard it a few days earlier.
“Amy hasn’t shut up about you since her visit,” he says. It sounds harsh even to his own ears, and he could probably have found a better way to say it, but she seems unfazed.
He wants to ask her name, even though he already knows it. Just to hear her say it.
She smiles, and he could be imagining it, but it looks like her cheeks flush pink. The odd lighting in the bar makes it hard to tell.
She looks down at her hands, then meets his gaze. “She’s interested in the work,” she says finally. “I’m sure she’d talk about anyone who did it.”
Rhett’s not so sure, and he almost says as much.
She orders a beer and wraps her small hands around the glass, immediately picking at the label with her long fingers.
Rhett doesn’t know what to say as the silence stretches between them. There’s a million questions he wants to ask, but all he does is watch, and by the time he’s built up the courage to say something, Lou beats him to it.
“Heard you had a good ride tonight.”
A snort escapes him. “You heard wrong,” he says, sipping from his bottle. He grimaces as the stale beer hits his tongue.
“But you’re moving up, right?”
He tilts his head at her, looking at the paper graveyard surrounding the beer bottle still in her grasp. “Yeah.”
“Then it’s a good ride,” she decides and raises the bottle to her lips, taking a long sip. His eyes trace the lines of her throat. He likes the way her hair graces her shoulders, and he wonders if it feels as soft as it looks.
“You think so?”
She nods, brushing hair behind her ears. “I know so.”
He’d forgotten all about his sore shoulder until he shrugs and a jab of pain courses through it. He half-heartedly suppresses a groan at the strain, but the woman beside him catches it.
“You should take it easy,” she says, eyes flicking from his face to the hand he’s placed on his shoulder as if that would soothe the ache. “Joe said you took a tumble.”
He supposes tumble is one way to describe being thrown off a bucking bull after barely lasting eight seconds.
His brows knit together. “Joe?” There are about seventeen people named Joe in this godforsaken town.
“Taylor,” she clarifies.
“Your boss.”
“My boss,” she agrees.
Silence falls between them again, but Rhett feels less awkward this time. He drums his fingers on the wooden counter and watches Lou sneak a glance down the line of the bar, only to wipe the tattered scraps of the paper label onto the floor.
He raises a brow at her.
She puts a finger against her lips to shush him as Jimmy comes back down towards them.
“Can I close out my tab?”
Rhett tips his hat down a little to hide the grin he’s sporting, but his success seems doubtful as his body shakes with a quiet chuckle.
He feels, rather than sees, Lou jump off the barstool next to him. Her hand skims along his back as she passes, a touch so light he can’t tell if it was on purpose or not.
A shiver runs down his spine as her touch leaves him. He waits until she’s gone and the door clicks shut to push his hat back up and ask Jimmy to close out his own tab.
He’s going to call it a night. Sitting alone at the bar doesn’t seem as appealing as his bed right now, but he doesn’t understand why.
After a ride, he would normally go looking for some woman to screw hard and fast, just to let off some steam, but not tonight. Tonight he’s just tired and sore and his ego is a little bruised because some new kid placed ahead of him.
He steps outside the bar and feels the cold Wyoming air hit his face.
“You come here often?”
Rhett jumps a good few feet in the air as the sound of laughter fills the quiet outside the bar. His heart races furiously in his chest, watching as Lou clutches her stomach, wheezing for air.
“Scaredy-cat,” she comments through uneven breaths as she regains her composure.
He looks over his shoulder, contemplating going back inside for another drink, just to settle the nerves Lou sparked to life. He can still hear the rushing of his pulse in his ears.
When he looks back at her, she’s already walking across the street to a faded yellow truck that has definitely seen better days. His feet carry him towards her before his head can register the decision to do so.
She reaches out to open her the driver’s side door, but Rhett’s arms are longer, so he yanks it open before she can. She startles, spinning around to face him.
“Jesus Christ, you scared me!”
He pulls open the truck door more with a grin threatening at the corners of his mouth.
“Not so funny when it’s you, huh?”
She huffs out a laugh as the tension leaves her shoulders and she hangs her head for a moment, letting it rest on his chest. When she lifts it again, he catches a whiff of her shampoo. She smells like summer.
She meets his eye, mischief and laughter radiating off her. There’s freedom in her eyes, making something in his stomach twist.
She climbs into the cab of her truck and lets Rhett close the door for her. She keeps her eyes on him as he takes a few steps back and the engine stirs to life at the turn of her key.
“Say hello to Amy for me,” she instructs him, and throws the old rust bucket in drive.
He watches her truck disappear down the main road until the taillights are no longer visible.
He can’t read her, not that it’s his strongest suit to begin with, but for someone who keeps to herself, she seems to be making an impression on the residents of Wabang.
He shakes his head, trying to will the hot feeling in chest to go away. As he reaches his own truck, he wants to blame the alcohol, but some part of him knows that’s far from the truth.

A/N: I can't believe it's finally here. I've been so excited to share this story with you, but I'm also nervous because this is so different for me, both in terms of style and tone. Comments and reblogs make the world go around. I hope you enjoy! (does this mean I have to watch the show now???)

idk where the therapy discourse is coming from but. hi. i’m an agoraphobic trauma survivor and i’ve been in therapy off and on for 10 years. have been in cbt, dbt, emdr, talk, music, art, dance, and equine therapy. just last year i was in an inpatient residential rehabilitation (whatever u wanna call it) facility for 2 months on the other side of the country so i’m Experienced. can confidently say that therapy has done next to nothing for me. (equine was the only helpful one and that was in rehab lol so not something i could continue.) sure therapy is helpful for some people, but for others like myself it is a massive waste of money and time that could be used instead on actual life enriching activities. like hobbies or going out with friends, for example, which are things that have actually helped me. anyway long winded but wanted to give my 2 cents as someone who is an extreme case lol

Blind Date Event ~ Cavendish X Reader
Tumblr media
Thank you to everyone who submitted applications for my Blind Date Matchmaking Event. I hope you enjoy these lovely bedtime stories during this week of overpriced chocolates, flowers and heart shaped things. @sabo-has-my-heart I hope you enjoy your date and it definitely did not have me simping pathetically for the Beautiful Pirate🤫🥺
Mostly fluff, SFW, Cavendish X Female reader, first blind date experience. WC:1.4K. Minors DNI - my content is for mature audiences only
Tumblr media
Cavendish knocked on your door, arriving punctually for your date together. He was dressed in a billowing button down paired with black pants, a rose belt buckle hung neatly where the shirt tucked. He looked handsome, ravishing even; you weren’t 100% sold on the hat though.
He did one of those fancy handshakes where he daintily raises your hand in front of him while he bows his head. Exclaiming how thrilled he was to be your date and that he was taking you to the hottest rooftop bar in the city. He led you to his white, polished Ford Mustang convertible. You noticed a small bumper sticker on the corner of his back bumper: Hell hath no fury like a Shagya Arabian stallion.
“I’ve got to be honest; I don’t know what a Shagya Arabian is.”
Cavendish’s eyes widened before a smile came over his face. His favorite topic. A horse boy through and through.
It was quite cute how passionate he was about the subject. It stemmed from his childhood horse who was now much older and past his prime. You were surprised to know that his deep knowledge of equines didn’t stop there. No, Cavendish loves all animals.
He comes from old money so he decided to start a non-profit rehabilitation center. At first it was to rehab injured equestrians, which expanded to treat donkeys, deer, and eventually his center became overburdened with animals in need that he expanded again. To several different counties and states, all specializing in different animal needs. To say you were impressed!
The ride to the bar was fairly quick and he opened your doors and pulled out the seat for you, always a gentleman. While you waited for your orders to be cooked, you sipped on decorated cocktails as you got to know each other.
You held the matchmaking pamphlet in your hands, “Cavendish what are your three biggest deal breakers?”
He took a sip of his gin and tonic, “I would say intentional cruelty to animals, cheating, and denim on denim wearers.” You giggled at that. “What about your three dealbreakers, _______?”
You swirled your Mai Tai, “controlling tendencies, cruel personalities, and excessive laziness.”
You shared your meals with each other on appetizer plates; he has a thing about his food mixing together. He listened intently as you shared more about yourself. Things like your hobbies, passion for cooking, favorite book and movie genres, even your bucket list.
“Overall, I like to believe I am laid back. I enjoy a night in as much as I enjoy trying something new,” you took a break to finish your meal, having talked through most of the meal.
“That’s great to know, _____. I’m glad to hear you like trying new things. See, I chose this bar not just because the food reviews were good, but because this bar is partnered with the art studio next door. This week they’ve put on an immersive Van Gogh experience that I thought we could do after dinner. The fun part is, to get to the show you can only enter through the rooftop bar. Look over there,” he pointed to a tall, curtained entrance.
“Past those curtains is a hallway made entirely of glass to get to the art show. I heard its quite exhilarating, being able to see the streets from 20 stories high; the sight allows you the most exquisite view of the city especially during sunset, which is in,” he checked his watch, “about 40 minutes.”
You were stunned. The date was thoroughly planned; you were expecting a nice dinner date at best but Cavendish was really going all out with making it an experience. You smiled at him, sharing your excitement at the plan while you received another round of drinks and the dessert menu.
The dinner date was refreshing. Your first impression of Cavendish was a rich boy who probably put forth 40% of effort to get what he wanted, if money couldn’t buy it for him right away. You were pleased at how thoughtful he was. With how passionate he was about his life’s work and how much of a gentle soul he seemed to be.
Cavendish carefully spooned his ice cream into his mouth, letting the flavor mix with the piece of apple pie he had already taken a bite of. Watching his face turn into one of delighted pleasure from the dessert. It was…so cute you blushed a little. He noticed and he cast his eyes downward, a quiet chuckle escaping him.
“______, I am enjoying my time with you. There is something I would like for you to know and, I would understand if you decided not to move forward with another date after tonight once you hear it. I just…” he looked nervous, “I hope you do not judge me too harshly.”
You nod your head at him, encouraging him to continue.
“I—“, he paused, resentment and shame crossed his features for just a moment. “I suffer from somnambulism, a sleepwalking and night terrors disorder.” His eyes were shadowed now.
“That’s not all…,” his knuckles were white from how hard he was clutching his glass. “I also suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and it is usually triggered during by my night terrors. Sometimes I can get violent during the worst of them. I don’t have as many episodes as I used to. I am in therapeutic treatment for both my conditions and I take medication for the sleep disorder. I just wanted to be upfront with you. I don’t want you to think I was hiding it from you or leading you on in any way,” he finally braved a glance at you.
“Oh,” you let out softly. Never before had you met a person be so honest about his own shortcomings and faults. It was admirable. “I think its brave that you shared that with me, especially during a night where we’re learning about each other to see if we’re compatible.” You smile softly.
“I can promise I won’t judge you for it. Not many people can admit they have issues and even less try to address them. I sincerely appreciate your honesty, though I won’t say right away that I’d like a second date but its not because of your disorders,” you soothe, taking another drink.
“It’s because I’m curious to see how the rest of our night goes,” you raise your glass to him. “I signed up for this event because I wanted to take a chance at finding someone. You did too. So Cavendish, what do you say we go enjoy that exquisite view and continue our date?”
His gorgeous blue orbs widened at your statement, a crooked smile growing on his face.
“Well said, _____. I appreciate your openness and kindness. To the rest of our date then,” he clinked his glass against yours in a toast.
The hallway was both thrilling and anxiety inducing, causing you to hold on to Cavendish as you walked across the glass floor. He fit the gentleman role perfectly, soothing you as he held you. The museum was breathtaking and you lost track of the time as you explored each room. By the time you were looking at the last installation, you nuzzling intimately against his body while he had his arm around your shoulder. You were actively disappointed the night had to end.
Cavendish walked you to your front door, holding your art gallery bag full of prints and goodies he had purchased for you. As you fiddled with the key in your lock, you gave him a bashful look.
“I had a really nice time tonight. I do want that second date, if you enjoyed my company as much as I think you did,” you spoke in a hushed tone.
He was sweet, lifting your hand in his, pressing a soft kiss to your knuckles.
“It would be my honor. Do you want me to surprise you or do you want to plan it together?”
“I think I would like to help plan the next one. Can’t let you be the one who shocks and amazes me all the time,” you flirt. “If you’re free this weekend, would you like to meet up for coffee and discuss it in more depth?”
His smile was radiant, “absolutely. But I’m counting it as a mini date, _____!” His heart started racing when you giggled, nodding in agreement.
You stood on your tip toes and pressed a kiss to his cheek, “I can’t wait.”
