Evil-Lyn is a character in the popular Masters of the Universe toy line and the accompanying cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The only female member of the Evil Warriors, she is an evil witch who aids Skeletor as his second-in-command with her powers of darkness. She is vastly more intelligent than Skeletor's other minions, and while she admits that she is not as powerful as Skeletor, she readily confesses that she hopes to seize her master's powers and lord them over Eternia herself one day. Thus, she has worked completely independently of Skeletor on multiple occasions. Her trademark is the magic wand crowned with a crystal ball, but Evil-Lyn typically generates magic without the assistance of any instruments. Evil-Lyn was introduced into the Masters of the Universe toy line in 1983 to add a female to the Evil Warriors. Initially envisioned as an evil warrior-goddess and counterpart to Teela, Evil-Lyn's action figure is identical to Teela's except in color scheme, head mold, and accessories. The original figure has bright yellow skin, though most depictions portray her as having olive or pale skin.

Brief Personality: Sam is very quiet when you first meet him, he seems to not trust anyone or anything really. But when you break through his walls he is a very sweet and passionate person, they genuinely care about their family and just want to be accepted by other people. Sam was born to a long line of magical creatures. The occult was incredibly normal in their family, having connections to the occult and the divine. His family had a powerful inherent magic ability, however when Sam was born there wasn’t a celebration.

Long ago, one of Sam’s oldest ancestors made a deal with a demon, Azazel. As she was on the verge of being executed for witchcraft. She made a deal with the demon that the first boy born to their family would belong to Azazel. And to save her life she agreed.

This wasn’t a problem for many generations. They successfully had generations upon generations of women. The most recent generations couldn’t even remember the curse very well, until Sam came along.

Sam was treated differently than his sisters, he wasn’t given the same toys or the same opportunities. His family believed since that he would be given up to the demon at 18, there was no point in developing a relationship or spending money or time with him.

Sam tried everything he could in order to get his families approval. Becoming one of the most powerful magic users in his family. However nothing was enough. And the time was slowly ticking to when he turned 18.

A few weeks before his 18th birthday, he ran away from home and made an abandoned house his sanctuary. Completely demon proofing it.. well mostly.. even though the demon couldn’t get to him physically, he could still mentally torment him, and attempt to get him physically.

Sam eventually ends up being protected by the divine forces his family tried to keep him from. And he slowly realizes how weak Azazel actually is, unlike how his family thought for generations.

Sam ends up breaking the bond between him and Azazel and kills him. Before going to live with his real found family, protecting them from the occult.

Evil-Lyn

So when you look up the backstory for the Masters of the Universe character Evil-Lyn, there was kiiind of an origin in the ‘80s: a man named Michael Halperin wrote a series bible dated December 1982 where Queen Marlena’s backstory as an astronaut from Earth was elaborated with a crew consisting of jealous second-in-command Evelyn Morgan Powers, Doctor T.E. Scope and biologist Biff Beastman who crashed separately from the escape pod she was in and turned evil because reasons. (Biff Beastman!)

Apparently every Filmation writer who read this was like “WTF no that’s terrible” because it was never mentioned and contradicted by Marlena’s whole spacecraft splashing down with her alone, intact enough to put in a museum.

The 2002 cartoon brought back Halperin and Filmation staff writer Larry DiTillio, but the latter came up with an original backstory: she raised somewhere called Zalesia by her undead sorcerer father, the Faceless One. The day she met Kelddor, the future Skeletor, she was a witch thief who looked like this:

Despite undead sorcerers almost always being evil, Daddy seemed to be on the side of good. Why she spent decades rebelling with Keldor/Skeletor was left unexplained when the cartoon was canceled after 39 episodes.

Here’s where things get goofy: there was a 2004 comic NOT by DiTillio that tried to explain the mystery: Lyn’s father, King of Zalesia, was a contemporary of King Grayskull. That’s the era she was born in...

... and when Zalesia was being destroyed by a god-beast during her infancy (it was the Faced One’s fault), a time-traveling Keldor appeared in his palace and offered to raise her somewhere safe.

... except that would be HORRIBLY creepy when the 2002 cartoon treated Keldor/Lyn as a couple and Skeletor/Lyn as exes, so apparently he immdiately left her with the Faceless One thousands of years later in his time of origin? What a convoluted baby delivery service.

I just want stories where Evil-Lyn tries to make Keldor visit her undead dad and be really uncomfortable around this undead goody goody, then one day he dies and it’s ironic.

Oh yeah, and Evil-Lyn Classics action figure was given a biography with the full name Evelyn Morgan Powers despite being from an alien planet, so when the Faceless One got a toy, he was suddenly Nicholas Powers. Eh, it makes sense if you have an alien named Duncan.

The Power Of Three – Unquiet Things

Honestly, I think chapter 5 might be my favorite part of Heart of the Woods.

Like, ever since chapter 3 started, Maddie and Tara have been separated, so you’ve been waiting for them to see each other again, for Maddie to let Tara know she’s okay, and this is when that finally happens.

Not to mention there’s finally hope of them stopping Evelyn with Maddie’s new powers, and there’s just so many happy scenes in it, whether they’re between Maddie and Abigail, Maddie and Tara, Tara and Morgan, Morgan and Abigail, it’s just an entire chapter filled with nice things.

And once you reach this point, the worst of what they have to get past is over, if you aim for the good ending, they don’t really have to go through anything as horrible as before. So it’s a sign that the worst of things are over, and they’ll just be able to happy after dealing with Evelyn.

Every other chapter has some bad moments in it, but ignoring the very final scene, this is just really nice moments between the group bonding.

And it’s just so refreshing to get after everything.

True Names

Names can be a tricky business. True names hold power over fairies and dragons. With a true name, one can sue a person. With a deadname, one can wreck a person.

I don’t use the term deadname for myself. I call the first name I had in life my Christian name. It is name with which I was baptized and the only name G-d will ever know me as. I’m agnostic, so that suits me just fine. My Christian name is Richard Bussey III. Dick Bussey III is not my stage name for a drag persona. I am indeed third of name. My father is Richard Jr. and my grandfather was big Dick Senior. 

When I began thinking about names, I was immediately and strongly drawn to unisex names, whether formal, often traditionally masculine names that had shifted to androgynous and feminine use (Evelyn, Ashleigh, Vyvyan &c.), or was a nickname for boys or girls (Alex, Jamie, Morgan, &c.), and a large group of tree names that could swing either way depending on the breeze (Linden, Ash, Rowan). I also included a few male names as a concession to my being boyish, and I am rather boyish in my androgyny (Aiden, Alexander, Thomas, &c.).

Avery is descended from Old German Alberich, a mythical figure ruling the elves, commonly called Auberon in French and Oberon in English. Aubrey and Alfred are of the same family. The ‘rich’ component is the same root as in ‘Richard.’ And of all the slurs that are used for my people, I do find ‘fairy’ the very most charming. So in a way that seems rather fitting - a combination of my old name and my most salient trait.

Slight return to Wightwick Manor, which I last saw in (3,5) November 2018; please see here and here for my earlier series on this place and its city of Wolverhampton, whose history I outline in the other posts.

The power and influence of its owners, the industrialist Mander family, is seen in the fact that Geoffrey Mander managed to sit as a Liberal MP for Wolverhampton East (the family having remained loyal to the Liberal Party in the days of William Gladstone, as Joseph Chamberlain led his followers in Birmingham out of the party) and the Manders resisted Chamberlainite pressure and held on until 1945, when they and Chamberlainites were both swept out by the Labour Party, which Geoffrey Mander ended up joining in 1948.

Their industrial money was spent on a state of the art house and, as you can see, garden. It was largely thanks to the Arts and Crafts pioneers such as William and Evelyn de Morgan (remembered in a first-class exhibition here) that most English homes, including my small terraced house, have gardens which are loved by their owners.

The Manders employed Alfred Parsons and then Thomas Mawson, who is known to us from Hanley Park, and this is the result.

“To be successful, a garden must respond to and satisfy man’s longing for the beautiful” said Mawson, and that is certainly what happened here.
