I never learned how to properly make a spreadsheet! I congratulate you on your initiative and skill.

…I should probably check out that free Excel class from my public library lol.

Honestly, I never had a formal class in it either -- I just fucked around in it and eventually got trained by colleagues and the necessities of the job. :D I do encourage people to learn spreadsheet basics because it's a really helpful way to track information and also to analyze data, and the library classes are a GREAT way to go about it! But also you can just start makin' sheets and every time you want it to do something and don't know how to do it, give it a google.

Google Sheets is free and slightly, I think, more accessible than Excel, but a lot of stuff differs between the two, so if you train in Google Sheets, do be aware that you can do more and different things (and sometimes have to do different things to get the same result) in other programs.

Spreadsheets I don't think were ever meant to be the backbone of most modern data management, but most databases do eventually break down into "well, you can export it as a spreadsheet" so it's a very handy skill to have :) Good luck!

Has above average knowledge of Excel/Google sheets due to studying finance, but after four years with no practise forgot most of it.

The "Sooon, I have a problem" person in their family. Actually, surprisingly good and patient at explaining computer stuff to older people.

Has a higher responsibility of doing taxes (finance, after all). Even he never fails to do them right, Ed always double checks. Sometimes they get into argument, where inevitably Riley proves he is right but his father would never admit it.

Warren, Leeza, Ooker and other teens:

Also nothing outstanding in terms of skills, except few of them have interest in IT.

They have bunch of small local Discord servers and one big main server with some very stupid name.

Few times Bev tried to bring up importance of parental control over this "new and rapidly growing young community", but thanks God no one took her concerns seriously

Leeza moderates it and her moder role called "Mayor-mini". Like father like daughter.

All teens local jokes and memes were bourn/spread though that server.

Bev:

Rumors says she sacrificed her humanity to obtain such powers with Microsoft software package.

Can build up Access database from scratch, using basic SQL commands, assemble primitive, but surprisingly sufficient interface to it and synchronize it with Excel in span of one day or less.

In her laptop there're every pupil's personal file, countless Excel tables, several automatised document accounts, Google calendar with precisely planned schedule for next several months (for school, church, island and personal matters) and probably Pentagon files.

Probably can find all Pi numbers with Excel formulas.

Never lets anyone to her laptop.

Spends her free time at different forums, mostly gardening-related.

Wade:

Made a very fucking poor decision to let Bev do all the legwork with digital document accounting.

Now has no idea how some of things even work, so just goes with a flow and does what Bev tells.

No wander she got away with embezzlement.

Knows about kid's server. Very proud of Leeza for managing it :)

Because of that, he knows one or two memes from there, but keeps them in secret.

Has hobby of fixing office equipment. Does it with Sturge in spare time due to Dupuytren's contracture not letting him operate his hand fully.

Sarah:

There's no good medical technicians on island, so when something goes wrong with equipment electronics - tries to fix it herself to best of her ability.

Always monitors electronic e-shops for spare details or equipment. Grows more and more addicted to it.

Frequently updates her selection of sites with useful medical information, because Erin asked her for help guiding teens though puberty. For that receives glances from Bev, but doesn't give a shit.

Has reputation of cool aunt among kids, so she was one and only adult invited to main Discord server. Didn't accept it (doesn't even have Discord acc), but still grateful for trust.

Plays solitaire a lot.

John:

Back when he was playing Paul, Bev asked him to do something with Excel. In conclusion, poor bastard had to learn basic computer skills and Excel in span of several days. Now he is traumatized for rest of his life.

Will do all the work manually just to not touch laptop again.

Upsets very easly when does something wrong.

Doesn't own laptop. Don't give that man laptop, he will cry.

By his own will uses it only to watch baseball. Always asks someone to help with that.

Like Father, Like Son

None of them were technically supposed to be able to access the internet. All relevant knowledge to their jobs, the kids, the pizzaplex, etc. already existed within their databases, and all information stored across the servers was available to them. But Chica had gotten bored one day and spent a bit too much time tinkering with herself via the upgrade cylinder. Monty had demanded his own internet connection after that, and before long, every animatronic in the pizzaplex had access. 

It was not long before Roxy discovered online shopping, and after a few mishaps in trying to figure out how to get the packages to themselves without management finding out, there was not an animatronic among them who had not secretly ordered something or other. 

Sun in particular seemed to enjoy finding new things to add to the daycare—rightly so, considering management was slacking in that regard—and as a result of his frequent digital window shopping, he often sent links to the rest of them, sharing things he had found that he thought they might like. 

All that to explain why Freddy opened a link from Sun with the caption you HAVE to get this :D and discovered that yes, he had to get it. 

It was a child-sized onesie with little footie boots and gloves that could be folded out of the way or velcroed into place and a hood with ears stitched on. It looked wonderfully soft and fuzzy. It was a warm brown with details depicting a bear cub. 

And it had excellent ratings.

Gregory laughed when he saw the onesie, but he also snatched it up and took off to go change into it, so Freddy did not think he minded the gift. The others would probably tease him once they caught sight of it, but it would be worth their jokes.

Make no mistake, Freddy did not wish Gregory was any different from the way he was. Nor did Freddy wish he himself was human. But it still tickled something in his code to imagine silly little impossibilities, like he and Gregory being a family by blood. Of course, Freddy was as much a real bear as Gregory would be in a stylized onesie, but that was hardly the point. 

It was only a minute or two before Gregory returned, and he must have stopped by one of the others’ rooms because his nose had been carefully colored in and a line drawn beneath it down to his upper lip. The onesie was a perfect fit—naturally, as Freddy knew his son’s exact measurements—and Gregory’s glee was near palpable. 

Freddy made a little involuntary sound of delight. He crouched down, feeling his eyes brighten to match the building warmth in his chest. 

Gregory came to stand in front of him and did a jaunty spin to show off the little pom-pom tail. Freddy had never understood the human urge to squeal from seeing something so utterly adorable as much as he did then. 

“C’mon,” Gregory said, showing off the toe beans on his gloves, complete with felt claws, “tell me I’m not the cutest bear cub ever.” 

Laughing, Freddy swept him up, and Gregory did not even scramble to hold on, so great was his trust that Freddy would not drop him. 

“You are certainly the cutest bear cub I have ever seen,” Freddy assured him, and Gregory smiled smugly, head leaning on Freddy’s shoulder. “And the best bear cub in general. My bear cub.” 

How odd that mere months ago, Freddy would have said he would not want a child of his own. He could not imagine, now, not having Gregory in his life. When he looked back on pre-Gregory memories, the absence of his adopted son almost shocked him sometimes. He had been happy back then, yes, but in a very mild and content way. There was little variation in his day-to-day, though he had not minded at the time. 

He did not think he could go back to that way of life. It fell far short of the joy that each new day brought now. Gregory made things unpredictable and lively in a way Freddy would be loath to give up. 

And best of all, his love, his gratefulness, and his happiness was matched in Gregory. 

Beaming, Gregory wrapped his arms around Freddy’s neck in a tight hug. “My papa bear,” he said, and it was only a bit teasing.

Eu explico o jogo. FM é basicamente um simulador de manager de uma equipa (aquilo quase se podia jogar em Excel lol). Tem que obter novos jogadores, cumprir orçamentos, investir em treinadores... O jogo usa databases com valores de jogadores reais e o pessoal gosta de jogar quer em equipas tipo 3° divisão da Malásia, por exemplo, quer em equipas grandes como o Sporting (eu sei que tu gostaaaaa). Para conseguirem jogadores para as equipas tem que se procurar em todo lado.

O levante é espanhol, certo? Basicamente quem joga com base de dados espanhola vai ter acesso às estatísticas dos jogadores todos. Pode muito bem ser um jogador que lhes passou com sugestão de um Scout no jogo. Pode ser um jogador que os surpreendeu e eles foram ao Reddit e disseram OLHA OLHA OLHEM AQUI ESTAS ESTATÍSTICAS e ficou famoso.

Não tem multiplayer por isso é uma comunidade bem mais simpática do que um jogo como o FIFA onde também podem descobrir jogadores.

This reminded me of the time I was doing social service for my bachelor's degree.

I'm a biologist. Back then (2007-2008ish, I guess? Don't remember, it's been a while lol) I joined the Ornithology Lab hoping to start my bachelor's thesis early (I did NOT but that's another story lmao). Part of my social service job involved transcribing lots (and I mean LOTS, there were journals dating back to the 80s) of field journals from past students into Excel spreadsheets and then entering the curated info into a special database designed by the Mexican environmental commission (CONABIO) for it to be accessible to other researchers and to add to the national biodiversity repository.

Oh, boy.

The spelling in plenty of those journals was TERRIBLE. And I'm not referring to the questionable spelling of scientific names (which can be truly difficult to memorize and write). I'm talking about the spelling of things like the alpha codes we ornithologists use to abbreviate either the scientific names or the standardized common names in English (HOW DO YOU MISSPELL FOUR / SIX LETTERS???), site identifiers, descriptions, field observations, etc. Heck, there were times when even the names of the observers were spelled differently ON THE SAME PAGE written BY THE SAME PERSON. Had at least one instance where a student regularly spelled his own name wrong and the head of the Laboratory didn't remember which spelling was the correct one, so we had to settle with the most common spelling of that student's name.

Considering all this information was gathered by fellow biology students during field practices (who in all likelihood were making these identifications with the aid of guidebooks and the professors' guidance), one would expect them to be able to write with certain grammatical consistency, as was to be expected of their academic level. But nope.

And yes, I know people can be dyslexic (or have other undiagnosed learning disabilities) and struggle with reading and writing, but some of those journals were written by people who were somewhat bordering on functional illiteracy, which I find truly baffling of people studying for a higher education degree.

Curating all that info was tortuous but I managed. And in the end I completed the mandatory 480 hours (and more!) of the social service necessary for graduation. Good grief, though. Reading OPs post gave me serious war flashbacks 😂

I really wanted to start off this blog with some interesting math posts but it looks like its a vent instead. Sorry lol

Really having a crisis lately...for context I recently graduated from maths and went into a cs industry job and I'm HATING it. Its so fucking boring. I cannot express just how boring it is. I've spent hours at a time having literally nothing to do because the people I'm meant to report to are leaving me on read when I ask for work.

Every time I bring the fact that I'm bored out of my mind to a senior I get asked if I'm asking for work. Why the fuck is it my job to beg on my knees for work? The managers in my department were all fighting each other in an introductory meeting to try and convince the new hires their teams were more fun to be on and when I get in the teams NOBODY WANTS TO FUCKING TALK TO ME about what to do. And the few people in another team who do talk to me about this don't seem to have anything interesting for me to do.

This is exactly like my parents fucking custody disputes. So much talk about wanting my time and when I actually take them up on the offer EVERYONES BUSY ALL OF A SUDDEN. Theres even the neutral third arbitration party who I go to to tell who I'd rather spend time with.

I'm not at this job so I can learn about the inane details of our organisational structure. I want to actually learn demonstrable industry relevant skills. Skills that aren't obsoloted by a choice of vendor or organisational shift. Skills that someone can verify I have by asking me to do them infront of them, not just trusting me when I say I'm an "excellent communicator who led task x". But every task I'm being asked to do is some boring database/search query/automation task at BEST and document reading/ticket answering at worst.

I tried to explain to my manager I felt I wasn't having to use my brain at all at work and he didn't seem to get it. It always seems to take multiple explanations to anyone at this place to convey what I consider as interesting. l told a higher manager about my complaints and his bright idea was to have me do a task that was 70% talking to people from different teams. I don't want to manage a project or consult stakeholders or determine project scopes or manage peoples unrealisitic expectations. I want to learn and solve problems. New problems. Technical problems. I want to be critically thinking. Is this hard to understand? Why am I having to resort to reading math textbooks in my spare time and at work to remain sane? My job should be doing that.

I've wasted so much of my life not learning because of bullshit reasons. In primary school I complained to my mother that maths class was boring because I already knew what we were learning. I wanted to skip grades. She told me to stop learning and eventually everyone else would catch up. I had to take it into my own hands to learn what I wanted to. Then high school rolled around, and I was still being bored to death. We have to learn parabolas a fourth time, I was told, because everyone else had forgotten them again. No, I couldn't not learn that again. I had to relearn all the chemistry I'd already taught myself because assessment. No, you can't skip these because it wi affect your tertiary entrance scores. I wasted so much of high school fretting about USELESS shit like criteria sheets and university entrancr scores. When I got to university I was finally free to push myself. I had a blast. And then I go into the workforce and its like primary school again.

I don't think industry has the right kind of work. I think I can only be fulfilled in academia, but academia will pull me away from my home country and idk if I can handle that. It feels stupid to say this but it all essentially boils down to one friend (I'll call her J) I met in highschool. We are in a small tight knit friendship group that has been fairly constant since highschool and honestly I can't imagine living without J. I was interested in her in highschool and sort of expected in university I'd find a load of cool new friends and sort of just...didn't? Don't get me wrong I have a load of cool acquaintances (and one friend but I'm not looking to get closer than I am already) but I never made the step to be proper friends with them. So I've just been weirdly emotionally dependent on this one person. We are just friends and its very stable, she knows how I feel. I don't need any hope of a further relationship to continue feeling how I do. I derive way too much happiness from her but literally nobody else makes me as comfortable as J does.

You'd usually say that you'll make new friends or find someone new but in the past 8 years I literally haven't found anyone else whose company I enjoy as much, and I can totally see myself going another decade without bothering to really try and look for any friends to be this close to. I don't care enough about sex or relationships to bother meeting a hundred people who I don't like just to find one person who can take up even more of my already precious time. I've long accepted that I'd rather indefinitely continue being emotionally attached to J with no chance of a relationship than bother with trying to shift to someone else. Other people suck. So I'm just going to end up being alone if I go overseas, especially since I'm going to be moving like 6+ hours timezone difference away.

I've loved learning and STEM my entire life and I've given up so much for it. I don't know if I can give up my friends for it though.

I'm begging you to even partially spill the beans on how you managed to get a good job! 😭 I seriously regret not doing a stem course and wish I'd just taken a year out before applying to figure out which subjects actually provided you with job prospects or at least transferrable skills because I was not ready. My uni careers service has been pretty useless- mostly the same generic CV + interview advice.

I think beyond having a good CV and interview skills, it's understanding what skills they're looking for and what skills you have, which will make you feel like shit.

The change in what sort of jobs I could get happened when I used the right language and I don't mean like " I'm motivated" but instead of talking about a process where I captured screenshots, edited them and uploaded it onto a database I used phrases like ' mapped a user journey ' ( because I did ) and when I created a formatted a spreadsheet I ' build a database that replaced an unsecure paper file ' learn to talk about what you've done really well. You don't want to bullshit too hard you sound stupid either

You have to focus on similar times of jobs or you'll wear yourself out having to dramatically change language on your CV but you need to know what jobs you're trying to apply for and what's realistic. I have a little document with paragraphs answering different questions I typically saw on the sorts of job applications I'd go for, so if I need to write a paragraph explaining how I do X, I already have something I can quickly edit. I have this document because I applied for alot of jobs

Getting good at Excel and by good I mean you can use basic stuff and even if you can't do more, you'll be able to reasonably learn. Even if you can't use a software, make sure you have awareness of it and whatever software is used in your current or previous job, find out if it's something other industries use so you can mention it. Blah blah my manager would set me talks on JIRA. Bull shitting doesn't work if you don't know what you're talking about

I also looked for jobs that heavily implied they want to train people or there will be opportunities to learn X coding languages. There were jobs I could get but there were no opportunities for growth and large organisations ( I don't mean like Google ) or public organisations typically have this , especially the ones that love going on about being inclusive, in my experience.

I didn't apply for internships or placements because I'm too old lol but there are many entry level type office jobs. Don't apply for being an administrator. It sounds like it's an easy job to get but it's not ( well in my experience ). There was a period I looked up every job with the word assistant in it and looked at what skills they need and what language from the job description I can reasonably copy

Thought of the Day 7/9/19

I recently watched a Youtube video of a guy discussing why some really intelligent kids struggle in school and others excel without even trying. There are a lot of reasons, but this argument piqued my interest.

Now. I'm going to try to simplify the thing and remove it from the MBTI source lens because: (Edit: oh hell, I wrote a novel instead. Sorry everyone.)

1.) I'm definitely NOT an MBTI expert.

2.) I dont want to make this insular and

3.) The guy has a really good point and great ideas but he hella rambles on and it was hard to follow, lol. (Sorry guy, I still liked your video and it meant a lot to me!)

This is speaking specifically about "Introverted Thinkers" versus "Extroverted Thinkers." There are other ways of rationalizing, but we are focusing on these for the purpose of our argument.

I'm going to use "Needs Details" and "Needs Conclusions" instead cause its more descriptive.

American school systems (at least) are set up perfectly for the student who only needs the conclusion and hinder the student who needs details.

For example: A teacher says "this is this."

- The Conclusion seeker only cares that the teacher wants that answer, whether the fact is correct or not. They don't need to understand why "this is this" to get that A+. Results oriented!

- The Detail seeker, however, needs tangential information. If they can't make sense of the Where, Why, Who, What, When, they cannot absorb or produce an answer. They need to build a scaffold of related information to triangulate the answer because they do not use a simple database to store or interact with information.

It doesn't help that the detail seeker is more interested in how to organize the knowledge in that scaffolding in order to relate to and understand other knowledge than they are in producing one answer for a teacher.

I might analogize it this way: Teacher holds up some objects, bounces them and says "these are rubber balls" to the class.

- The seeing student is good to go. Things that look like this and bounce must be rubber balls. 

- But the blind student must experiment with it: hold it, hear it, smell it, (and well.. I wouldn't lick it, but whatever you need to do, buddy, I support you.) in order to recognize a rubber ball in the future.

Furthermore the blind person, in testing the objects, might realize. Oh, this ball is smoother than this other one, is it not the same? They will need to ask why there is a difference in order to understand why they're both considered "rubber balls". ("oh, that's actually a polymer ball, it is made of different materials but it acts the same way and has the same use. We call it a ‘rubber’ ball because rubber balls came first and has become a concept of its own. Oh ok.")

In a balanced world, blindness wouldn't be considered a disability, just an aspect. Not all places of society or nature can accommodate everything a blind person needs perfectly. But neither can it for that seeing person: the person who assumes "bouncy ball" might one day pick up a glass one and shatter it in their hand without thinking because they don't have that scaffolding of experience and understanding to pull from. I think they call this kind of disability the "Darwin Awards."

That is not to say I think these people are stupid. I mention it because this is a way in which society and nature do not accommodate these people.

Society is a construct that determines what is "stupid" and what is "disabled" and nature is generally incapable of caring one way or another. 

Recap:

A conclusion seeker only needs results to move forward and learns efficient strategies to get to these results.

A detail seeker wants to build their understanding so they can make sense of their world. They feel there are many conclusions to be had, not all of them are right/wrong, all may be important at some point, and most of them are found along the journey.

Both of these methods of reasoning are absolutely legitimate and excellent! There are advantages to both! And it is an extremely rare person who can manage both individually so it's important that they support each other for strength.

Getting into another area of this:

Many Neurodivergent and Disabled people tend to be detail people, whether by nature or nurture. What they are able to give to the world is often measured critically against the resources they need to take for accommodation, or ignored outright for efficiency's sake. But the things they CAN provide can be monumental and extremely important to success and progress. (They don’t NEED to provide these (results) in order to deserve accommodations. Their experience alone adds to that collective scaffolding)

The point however, is that schools and businesses are increasingly prioritizing one over the other. "Results results results. Progress is measured by results" (tests, bottom lines). "We only need ENOUGH details to get by." (most K-12 academics and corporate business.)

Oftentimes detail seekers aren't considered as important as the guys who make results; they tend to be undervalued even when they are lauded. Recognition does not pay the bills, Plaques and trophies are only a burden when you have no place to put them. Generally speaking, Details prevent losses and Conclusions produce revenue. They aren't mutually exclusive! They're. BOTH. Important. Together!

So if you're struggling in school, keep this in mind. Don’t be afraid to direct and specialize your interest. If you're doing really well in school, please keep this in mind too!

heya! how did you learn so much about dinosaurs and how can i learn about dinosaurs? there’s so much information to peruse lol

Hey! I’ve always been fascinated with dinosaurs, so I grew up with a lot of books and games and shows that were full of educational stuff. There’s a ton of good blogs around -- Tetrapod Zoology, Archosaur Musings, Skeletaldrawing, Theropoda, and The Theropod Database are all excellent ones off tumblr, although they can get pretty technical at times. On tumblr, @a-dinosaur-a-day, @albertonykus, @fezraptor, and @raptorcivilization are great helpful resources. There’s also all sorts of discords and group chats set up; the Archives of the Dinosaur Mailing List is also a great news source.

If you’re willing to spend a bit on a book, Thomas R Holtz’s “Dinosaurs: The Most Complete, Up-to-date Encyclopedia for Dinosaur Lovers of All Ages” really does live up to its name; although it’s now over ten years (!) out of date, the basic information still stands and it manages to be both in-depth and highly accessible and easy to understand.

It was raining when we get back. prayed maghrib and isya in some random mosque. went back and arrived at like 8 past sumn. showered, slept like a babyy

2 - lazed, slept and woke up at like 11, went to nila’s house, practiced doing eyeliner by borrowing nila's (focallure brand), iftar at green sedayu foodcourt (originally intended to go to the yumz but it enforces actual distancing) with angkot ppl minus tik will. Arrived home at about 9-ish.

3 - magang as usual. Went to rm. Took mrt to lebak bulus. My inaco salary finally came. My head kinda hurts after tarawih. Ended up skimming over bj alex lmaooo. Did not shower today lol,,,,

4 - added dr dafsah's revision to the excel database otw to rsf. Pak nardi took a while to arrive. Left rsf early to go to the bank. I (((finally))) activated m-banking lmaooo wow the features are neat wow im not jahiliah anymore. Found this method of just let it sweat anyway during tarawih lmaoo. Preferably with long sleeves bcs somehow you feel less of the sweaty feel compared to tshirt.

5 - sampling - data entry - RM as usual. Theres no new RM. Read a goood dramione fic by bex chan even if its not complete, its okay. Im okay :"))). Iftar was soup, salad, chicken katsu and french fries. Its been 2 days that i practiced sleeping-to-rain-sound. The first night was spent as a dreamless quick sleep (its over before you knew it), but tonight i dreamed abt almira's wedding lmaoo.
