Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson AO3 Works Stats
The other day, I was curious to see what the trajectory of uploads of Larry fanfic on Ao3 was and if it was increasing.Anyway, it was a pretty simple process, and here were the findings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perfect right? Done. Time to go to bed? No, because ya girl got hyper-fixated. So grab a cup of tea and enjoy this absolutely ridiculous waste of time...
Introduction
The Covid-19 pandemic profoundly affected various aspects of societal behaviour, including participation in online communities. The ‘Larry fan fiction community’ had a notable influx of new participants and emerging writers during this period. My antedotal observations suggested a significant number of authors have been publishing their first works as recently as this month. This study aims to quantify the trends in Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson fan fiction uploads on AO3 (Archive Of Our Own) over the past decade, with a particular focus on discerning any noticeable uptick in contributions corresponding to the pandemic’s timeline.
Method
The data collection was executed over several days, starting from the 16th of October 2023. Due to this, the 16th of October was used as a reference point for all of the 12-month periods. The following parameters were employed for filtering:
Relationship Category: Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson.
Inclusivity: All pieces that included this relationship, irrespective of the presence of other pairings. The result of this means there are likely some works included where they are a side pairing.
Language: All languages were included.
Work Status: Both individual pieces and those parts of a series were included, as were completed and incomplete works.
Accessibility: Being logged in allowed access to members-only works.
During the analysis, two works were excluded due to backdating, to ensure the timeframe remained consistent. Due to the dynamic nature of the fan fiction platform, some works underwent updates or were removed during the data collection process. While these fluctuations did cause some inconsistencies, they were negligible and did not significantly impact the overall dataset.
For the 12-month periods under consideration, three main categories were analysed: total, completed, and unfinished.
Tumblr media
Results
A comprehensive analysis of Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson fan fiction uploads spanning from 2011 to 2023 revealed the following insights:
2011: A total of sixteen works were documented, all of which were completed.
2012: The total number of uploads rose to 417. Among these, 409 were completed works, while eight remained unfinished.
2013: A significant surge was observed, with total uploads reaching 4,795. Completed works accounted for 4,251, whereas 544 were left incomplete.
2014: The growth trend continued, recording a total of 6,303 uploads. 5,296 were completed, and 1,007 were in-progress.
2015: The first decline was witnessed, although minor, with 6,105 total uploads. Completed works comprised 4,919, and unfinished ones stood at 1,186.
2016: A slight decline was noted, totalling 4,805 works. Completed pieces were 3,765, with 1,040 still in-progress.
2017: Uploads further decreased to 2,898. Of these, 2,297 were completed, and 601 remained unfinished.
2018: A modest rise was seen with 2,784 total works. Completed contributions were 2,275, while 509 were ongoing.
2019: The total dropped to 2,064. Completed pieces stood at 1,700, and 364 were still under development.
2020: A slight increment occurred, totalling 2,572 uploads. Of these, 2,071 were finished, and 501 were ongoing.
2021: The count increased to 3,195. Completed works reached 2,483, with 712 in-progress.
2022: A total of 3,767 works were uploaded. Completed works were 3,090, while 677 were yet to be finished.
2023: The most recent data showcases 4,018 total works, with 3,104 completed and 914 still ongoing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After collating the primary data on completed and uncompleted works, I wanted to look at the distribution based on word count. The intention behind this exploration was to discern if there were patterns or preferences within the writing community regarding the length of the stories. (Please note that on diagrams representing word count, the years are now in descending order)
Tumblr media
The categorisation of word count was structured. Works were segmented into word count brackets that started from the shortest stories, ranging from 0 to 1999 words, then progressively moved up in intervals: 2000-4999 words, 5000-9999 words, and so on due to the high prevalence in numbers in the shorter works. This structured approach allowed for a visual representation of how numerous works fell into each bracket for each year.
Tumblr media
If you click on it, you might be able to see the distribution.
Results: Word Count Analysis
The following overview encapsulates the distribution of word counts for fan fiction uploads from 2011 to 2023:
0-10,000 Words:
2023 observed the highest concentration within this frame with 2507 works. Over half of the total published works for the 12-month period were found within this bracket.
The trend experienced notable growth from the 14 entries in 2012.
2014 saw a peak with 4994 works in this category, followed by a fluctuating pattern in subsequent years.
Tumblr media
10,001-50,000 Words:
2023 recorded 1,031, a slight increase from 1,010 in 2022.
2015 led the chart with the most works in this range.
Tumblr media
50,001-100,000 Words:
The count in 2023 showcased the highest number in this category, with 293 works.
2016 and 2021 were equal second, with 219 works in this category.
Tumblr media
100,001-300,000 Words:
2023 had the most works in this segment, followed by 2022 and 2021.
Prior to this, the peak was in 2017.
Tumblr media
300,001 Words and above:
The numbers in this range are comparatively limited, with 2023 having the most works surpassing 300,000 words.
Most years witnessed very few works in this extensive word count bracket, with numbers often remaining in single or low double digits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also interested to find where most work stopped being completed. This is the percentage of completed works in each range.
Tumblr media
Limitations of the Analysis:
AO3 Filtering System Limitations: The AO3 filtering system does not readily display the initial posting date of a fic. A fic could have been started several years prior to its completion but only shows up in the filtering system in the year it was last updated. This poses a significant limitation as the actual duration taken for the completion of a work might not be accurately represented.
Human Fallacy: There's always a potential for human error in manual data collection and analysis. Overlooked details, misinterpretations, or unintended biases can inadvertently influence the results.
Deletion and Date Modification of Works: Authors may delete their works or modify posting dates. This becomes significant for older works with a higher likelihood of deletions or date changes. Such actions can skew the numbers, offering a misrepresented view of the works available during a particular year.
Variability in Word Count Reporting: While categorising based on word count is useful, it's possible that authors might update or expand their works after the initial posting, leading to changes in word count categories over time.
Conclusion:
The data spanning from 2011 to 2023 shows that over the 13-year period, there has been a marked increase in both completed and uncompleted works, with the total number of works increasing more than 250-fold from 16 in 2011 to 4018 in 2023.
From 2011 to 2015, there was a notable surge in the number of completed works, culminating in 2014 with a total of 6307 works. This could potentially reflect an increased growing interest or a pivotal shift in the community or broader fandom dynamics during this period.
From 2016 to 2019, a noticeable decrease in the total works emerged, with 2019 seeing the steepest drop. This decline aligns with the onset of One Direction's hiatus. While causation cannot be conclusively established, it does provide a reasonable explanation.
Beginning in 2020, a revitalisation is evident, with figures steadily climbing and nearing their zenith by 2023. While this remains speculative, anecdotal accounts suggest that the pandemic, affording individuals more leisure for social media coupled with the growing popularity of TikTok, may have reignited interest in the fandom, steering them towards both reading and potentially writing fanfiction.
In summary, the AO3 community showcases dynamic growth, decline, and resurgence patterns over the examined period. While completed works have seen fluctuating trends, the spirit of initiation remains unwavering, as observed by the consistent number of uncompleted works.
Tumblr media
Length of works
Tumblr media
In 2011, the publication of longer stories (10,000 words and above) was almost non-existent. The numbers began to rise steadily, with a significant jump in longer stories from 2015 to 2017.
Tumblr media
The number of stories with a word count between 10,000-14,999 went from 2 in 2011 to a peak of 458 in 2014. Similarly, the 15,000-19,999 range saw an increase from 0 stories in 2011 to its peak at 253 in 2015. As we progress through the word count brackets, there's a discernible growth trend, albeit with some fluctuations. For instance, the 80,000-89,999 bracket jumped from 0 stories in 2011 to a peak of 48 stories in 2023.
Tumblr media
While there have been fluctuations in the numbers for some years, the overall trend does show growth in the publication of longer stories over the past decade.
Tumblr media
The data shows that extremely long stories (those above 200,000 words) have always been a rarity. However, there's still a perceptible trend.
The 200,000-249,999 word count range sees the most action, with a peak of 27 stories in 2023. This is growth from the previous years 17, and then to 14, and so on. The numbers decrease as we progress to the right into the higher word counts, but occasional stories reach these impressive lengths.
The 250,000-299,999 word count range has peaked at 6, with numbers generally dropping with previous years. Higher word count ranges, such as 300,000-349,999 and 350,000-399,999, are sparser but maintain a presence.
Word counts of 450,000 and beyond are sparse, with very few recent entries.
In conclusion, while very lengthy stories remain uncommon, they exist and have seen publication in varying numbers. There's a trend towards fewer stories as the word count increases, which is expected given the monumental length of these works.
Upon examination of the data, there's a pronounced resurgence in the publication of longer narratives, particularly following a noticeable decline post-2016. The trajectory of this resurgence hints at an evolving literary landscape, with authors and perhaps readers veering towards more extensive works. Although the factors underpinning this shift remain speculative, the upward trend, especially in the realm of extended narratives, cannot be dismissed.
Tumblr media
Monitoring developments in this sphere to ascertain whether this resurgence signifies a phase or a deeper, more sustained transformation in literary predilections will be interesting.

HORRORS OF AL-SHIFA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“This criminal occupation does not care about international laws or humanity, it only cares about killing the Palestinian people.” Palestinians are recovering the bodies of those killed by Israel’s two-week raid on al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, but identification is proving difficult because of the state of decomposition.
After Israeli forces withdrew from the hospital on 1 April, teams from several government ministries have been deployed to al-Shifa to remove and identify bodies before burying them in cemeteries.
“We are now digging up all the martyrs that were executed by the [Israeli] army,” Hussein Mahassen, ambulance director in the Gaza Strip, told Middle East Eye. “Our capacities are very limited, as we are working with just one bulldozer.” While it is unclear how many bodies have been buried in the hospital’s yard, the Civil Defence said that they have recovered 409 bodies from the medical complex since the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Mahassen said his team expects to find between 200 and 300 bodies buried in the ground in al-Shifa, but cannot confirm this number. Reports emerging from the hospital and its vicinity following the Israeli army’s raid spoke of torture against detained Palestinians, with medical teams in al-Shifa currently documenting these cases. “There are signs of torture on some of the arms and bodies we pulled out,” Mahassen said. Medical and forensic teams said that their mission is particularly difficult because of the state of the remains. Amira al-Safadi, a doctor at al-Shifa, said that some of the bodies were initially left to rot among people who were besieged in the hospital for days, before Israeli forces allowed them to buried. Safadi herself was forced to stay in the hospital’s reception with a group of people for two weeks. “Among the wounded that they brought down from the ICU to us, at the reception, around 16 died,” she told MEE. “They laid dead with us for three days.” By Mohammed al-Hajjar and Nader Durgham

not gonna lie, it cracks me out that daxtons are like “they can never copy the iconic window scene!” but the thing is, do they even know that the show isn’t trying to “copy” their ship but trying to make narrative parallels?? the fact both scenes take place on 2x09 (before prom) and 4x09 (after prom) means it was intentional. They’re aiming to illustrate the differences in each relationship by having them execute a similar moment that ends very differently (and i have a theory about the 409 benvi scene being a emotionally heavy moment).
A lot of the scenes between benvi x daxton that are similar are supposed to BE similar because that’s a common narrative tool when exploring narrative differences in love triangles.
Sometimes i feel like people complain and act like they haven’t seen typical media devices before.
e x a c t l y !!!!!!!!! exactly exactly exactly exactly exactly-
narrative parallels to display key differences in dynamics, my beloved. emotional growth arcs that explore one's wants vs their needs, my beloved. relationship dichotomies that symbolize dream vs reality, my beloved
tbh this is why i'm a hoe for a good love triangle so long as it's well-written and plainly fleshes out these comparisons in the subtext. people complain about love triangles when "it's obvious who they're going to choose", but those kind are my FAVORITE, babey! show me ALL the reasons why persons A&B have a deeper connection than A&C! i eat that analytical shit up!

Desdemona Evangeline
For @akitasimblr bc!!!
409 y/o
She/her
Pansexual - Demigirl
Former witch, current demon/vampire
Possible serial killer
For occupation, she wrote "lookin' this fine is a full-time job," but I'm like 85% sure her income comes from extortion
Like: literally nothing
Dislikes: everything
Download mediafire
This is Desdemona. She hates you, she hates this picture, she hates this game, she even hates that I'm writing about her right now! She hates everyone! Every person, place, and thing.
Born in 1614 and growing up an orphan in Salem, she's always hated everything. But her real mean streak didn't happen until 1632 when some of the townsfolk caught her sacrificing a young boy in a bit to satisfy her one true love, Lucifer.
Unfortunately, the boy survived, and she was sentenced to be burned at the stake for witchcraft! God, can't a girl do anything these days?! Well, the day of her execution, she was able to overpower her guard and spill a little blood for her spell to talk to her boyfriend. He made her a deal, your soul for your life.
So she thought to herself, "What the hell do I need that rusty old thing for?" And took the deal.
Lucifer worked his magic, and the town ended up being burned to ash instead of Desdemona. He also turned her into a vampire so she would live forever. Once he had her soul, he had gotten everything he wanted from her and left her to navigate her new life (or death) on her own.
Centuries without her soul corroded and turned her into something darker, something much worse than a vampire.
Now it's been 300+ years, and since old Luci boy ain't picking up the phone no more, and she's gotten about all the money she could possibly need from decades of being a black widow, she's decided to venture out and give love a real shot this time.
But how does love work when you have no soul?
Hopefully, this one won't end as blood as he last hundreds romances.

COMMENTARY:
You are engaged b the deconstruction of the holistic structure of the euangelion Pilate set into motion with this report to Tiberius that the Jewish god had performed a blood covenant with the Italian Cohort as represented by Cornelius, the curator of Quelle, the military record of Jesus collected before He was arrested, on general purposes. The Tidings of Joy from Judea to Rome is perfectly defined musically by Messiah, Passion of the Cross.
My problem isn't that your are taking apart the literature, In the critical literary method of the Hegelian Historic Gestalt, this is called "Differentiation" Even Marketing majors have heard of Definition, It is a totally legitimate phase of systematic inquiry, Take it apart. Look at it, It's like the Myers-Briggs cognitive model of Kant's Categorical Imperative. Your personal 4 letter cognitive coordinate, such as ESTP, is what your personality all broken down for routine maintenance and spread all over the floor of the garage, That is the sort of differentiation Hot Rod magazines published routinely about really gnarly rides. The Truth of the Gospels beginning with the Talking Cross The Talking Cross was the excuse the soldiers and centurion in charge of the tomb of Jesus offered Pilate for losing the body of Jesus, That was a capital offense. They weren't executed, but ordered to blackmail a huge bribe from the Jewish Sanhedrin to buy their silence about the Talking Cross. The Romans wanted to keep it a secret, But the scuttlebutt about the Talking cross went through the legions like grass through a goose.
This is when the servant-leader ethic of Pauline Theology crossed over the charts to the Pagan Music cultural market, Only, it was totally an inside baseball joke, The Talking Cross only makes sense within the God Fearer context of Yaweh, Queen of Battle. Both Moses and Mohammed withhold the nature of Yaweh with a uterus while featuring Yaweh without a uterus, aka God, the Father, It's the ontology of Kant's Categorical Imperative, ,That's what the differentiation of
Now, the thing is, you have to put it back together, This is call "Integration" and requires restoring the synthesis of the original dynamic to its original performance,, if not better. You put the straight block 4 cylinder block back in the A-Model Ford chassis and turn the crank. Or, you put a 409 V8 in the A Model chassis and lower the shocks. The thing is, the things has to work when you put it back together, In terms of the cognitive model of the Categorical Imperative displayed with the Myers-Briggs/Jung differntiation, Keirsey 'Temperament constructs is a system of integration, the dialectical synthesis of Hegel's Historic Gestalt. the SP-Sj/NF/FT assemblies are how the cognitive elements produce as integrated behavior at the requisite variety level, I don't have any idea what your Jesus looks like when you put all the bullshit you have crated back together, but my guess is it is a Jesus who can't walk on water.
That would most please Dom Crossan,

—Meagan Levinson, Executive Editor
What book are you reading now?
AC: Like many people, I first got into academia because I loved reading books. To keep this love going, I created a Feminist STS Book Club at Stanford with graduate students and postdocs, where we each nominate books—scholarly books as well as fiction—and discuss them together. The two books we read most recently were a blast.
The first one was Timothy Mitchell’s The Rule of Experts: Egypt, Techno-Politics, Modernity (University of California Press), which starts with this unforgettable sentence describing the arrival of malarial mosquitos during World War II: “In the summer of 1942 two forces invaded Egypt, and each provoked a decisive battle. Only one of the two was human, so only that one is remembered, although the casualties in the other battle were greater.” I mean… does academic writing get any better than this?
The second was Michael Kimmel’s Manhood in America: A Cultural History (Oxford University Press), a classic in gender studies. Kimmel introduces the concept of “hegemonic masculinity,” and has some pretty amazing pictures that kept us going for a long time (I won’t say more but encourage everybody to take a look). This one was particularly relevant for my research, since part of my current book project on influencers focuses on the case of “dad influencers” and how they articulate masculinity on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
CC: Right now I’m reading Hajar Yazdiha’s The Struggle for the People’s King (Princeton University Press), which I got a couple days before I wrote this, and which I’m loving so far. Other books I’ve recently read and admired are Derron Wallace’s The Culture Trap (Oxford University Press), Larissa Buchholz’s The Global Rules of Art (Princeton University Press), and Frank Dobbin and Alexanda Kalev’s Getting to Diversity (Harvard University Press). Next on my list is Kusha Sefat’s Revolution of Things (Princeton University Press). The two forthcoming books I’m most excited about are not sociology;  Jesse David Fox’s Comedy Book (FSG) and Kliph Nesteroff’s Outrageous (Abrams).
IT: One of the things I realized when I got a job is that, suddenly, I had to trick myself into reading books. Academic life is full of so many tasks with actual deadlines, that reading a book becomes something you have to make a real effort to get to. I trick myself into reading books by putting myself on award committees, sitting on editorial boards (!) and running a theory reading-group with students and colleagues at my department.
Two books that I have been spending time with over the past weeks are Karen Cerulo and Janet Ruane’s Dreams of a Lifetime (Princeton University Press), and Annie Ernaux’s Shame (Seven Stories Press). The first is a wonderful sociological book that shows the patterns of fantasy that America Dreams follow; The second is a fiction book in which seemingly very little happens. The author spends the entire book trying to understand the background conditions that led to her experiencing a particular childhood trauma described on the first couple of pages. Both sociological books, though in different ways…
What book has had the most impact on your career?
AC: That’s a hard one. I was first trained in France, where I came of age with the holy trifecta of Pierre Bourdieu-Luc Boltanski-Bruno Latour, so it’s been hard to break away from this training, and in all honesty I should probably cite a book from each of them.
That said, if I were to choose a book that recently made me reconsider everything I thought and how I could write, I would pick Donna Haraway’s “A Cyborg Manifesto,” first published in 1985 as an essay in the Socialist Review, later published as part of Simians, Cyborgs, and Women: The Reinvention of Nature (Routledge). It changed everything I thought I knew about technology, feminism, and embodiment. More personally, it transformed how I thought of myself in relation to technological and medical artefacts. It’s such an energetic, powerful, free kind of text—it’s creative in a way that encourages everyone to play with disciplinary norms.
CC: Josh Gamson’s Freaks Talk Back (Chicago University Press) is why I wanted to become a sociologist. It’s empirically rich, important but not self-important, and contrarian in a way that I think much of good sociology should be. It has a home base in culture while also integrating across subfields  (movements, sexualities) in such an exciting way. And it’s unabashedly a fun read. I love it.
IT: Perhaps the book that made the most impact on me was G. H. Mead’s Mind Self and Society (University of Chicago). I was a Master’s student in Tel Aviv University, and some friends and I started a theory “book club.” We would meet at my place to read 5-10 pages of the book, slowly working through the ideas over months, trying to think what it means for a self to emerge socially, and what it means to focus on action. A lot of my interactionist and pragmatist leanings were cemented there, in the back and forth of these conversation
What is the best career advice you ever received?
AC: My postdoc mentor danah boyd once said in passing, “you need to find out what recharges your battery.” I don’t think she was giving career advice, but this sentence has stayed with me ever since. Academic careers are long and arduous. The job is wonderful but exhausting and relentless, so after a while, for me the question became: how do you keep on going? danah’s answer was another question: what brings you joy? Is it immersing yourself in books and articles and learning about a topic you know nothing about? Is it writing first drafts and figuring out what you’re trying to say about something? Is it doing in-depth fieldwork? Is it fostering intellectual community and see how other people think about hard questions? Is it curling up on a sofa with hot tea and reading romance novels? (of course, it can be all the above). When I feel depleted and exhausted, I try to go back to what brings me joy, I seek to protect it and put clear boundaries around it. It doesn’t always work, but I like to think that I’m getting better at it!
CC: When I was a graduate student my advisor, John Mohr, warned me that he thought a lot of things could (and likely would) go wrong with my dissertation, but not to worry, because none of them would prevent me from ultimately having a dissertation. It was a warning and a reassurance at the same time, which is the package that those types of warnings should always come in. As John predicted, many things did go wrong in my dissertation. The gift of that conversation was John was giving me permission to be comfortable with my reach exceeding my grasp, and to take risks, and to try stuff out.
IT: Not quite advice, but a form of training… I was a journalist before I decided to get into academia. I used to work in the foreign desk editor at Ha’aretz, an Israeli newspaper. Every day I would come at 4pm and get my pages and some guidance from my chief editor, and every night, at around 12am, give or take, the pages I received would be full, double-checked and copy-edited. There was something reassuring about knowing that, whatever happens, the pages will be filled in the 8 hours between my arrival and going home. Approaching academic work in this way has been incredibly helpful. Writing is not a matter of inspiration. Inspiration may hit in the act, but sitting and writing—filling the page—is a form of labor. I think it saved me from a lot of angst both in graduate school, and later on in my career.
