CDC calls itself the nation’s “leading science-based, data-driven, service organization.” So, one might assume that the statements on its website are carefully vetted by at least one of its 1,700 scientists. Unfortunately, CDC is unable to provide ICAN with any records relied upon to support its statements on its COVID-19 vaccine “Myths and Facts” webpage.
The CDC.gov website is supposed to be one of the most authoritative public health websites in the world. Perplexed by many of the statements made on its (ironically-titled) webpage “Bust Myths and Learn the Facts about COVID-19 Vaccines,” ICAN’s legal team submitted numerous FOIA requests asking CDC for the evidence it relied upon to make those statements. We’ll discuss each of these “facts” in our new series: No Records Found.

“Nearly all the ingredients in COVID-19 vaccines are also ingredients in many foods – fats, sugars, and salts.” This was certainly news to us, especially since ICAN has closely studied the ingredients listed in each COVID-19 vaccine insert. In order to get to the bottom of this, ICAN’s attorneys sent multiple FOIA requests, phrased in different ways, asking for all records showing:
The foods that contain the same ingredients as those found in the COVID-19 vaccines.
The foods that contain recombinant spike protein from the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The foods that contain nucleoside-modified messenger RNA.
The foods that contain extracts from the soapbark tree.
The foods that contain baculovirus and cellular DNA, lentil lectin, methyl-α-D-mannopyranoside, simethicone, pluronic F-68, Triton X-100 and/or Tergitol.
Eating an ingredient found in food has the same effect on the body as injecting that same ingredient into the body.
A rational person would assume that these requests would be answered with records, studies, or at least emails between CDC scientists that support CDC’s claimed “fact.” In fact, CDC is required to have this support pursuant to the Information Quality Act, which requires that the agency be able to “substantiate the quality of the information it has disseminated.”
It will come as no shock to ICAN supporters to learn that CDC was not able to find ANY records whatsoever in response to any of our requests about this claim. Not a single study, white paper, or even an email from the “leading” public health agency on the planet to support a statement it calls “fact” on a page about “busting myths.” Truly incredible, ironic, and disturbing.

Making the Pokémon Search Functional with JavaScript
Now the fun stuff begins: making the Pokédex actually function by fetching data of the Pokémon from the API. For that, we are going to make use of the Pokémon API over at https://pokeapi.co/ to pull thousands of different Pokémon, along with their names, types, stats, and sprites.
Now let's go into breaking down a bit of JavaScript code I've written and explain this in much more depth:
Async Function
async function fetchData()
This function is declared as async, which means it returns a Promise and allows the use of await inside it for easier handling of asynchronous operations. This is useful when working with fetching data because it avoids the use of callback functions or.then() chaining, making your code cleaner and easier to read.
Try-Catch Block
try {. } catch (error) { console.error(error); }
The try block contains the code that may throw an error. If an error occurs during the execution of the code inside the try block the catch block will handle the error. Then, the error is logged to the console.
Get Pokémon Name from Input
const pokemonName = document.getElementById("name").value.toLowerCase();
It pulls out the input value by the user inside the input field with the ID of name. It then takes that value and uses it to make a request for a Pokémon by that name.toLowerCase() is called on this input to make the input case-insensitive.
API Request using Fetch
const response = await fetch(https://pokeapi.co/api/v2/pokemon/${pokemonName});
fetch() is an asynchronous function which makes an HTTP request. The URL here used refers to the API for the pokémons (pokeapi.co) and the pokemonName variable value is inserted into this URL string to retrieve data from a particular searched pokémon.
Response is Valid Check
if (!response.ok) { throw new Error("Could not find Pokemon"); }
response.ok This checks if the response status code is within the 200 range, indicating the request was successful. If the request fails-for example, the Pokémon doesn't exist-the throw new Error() statement creates an error with a custom message and throws it.
Parsing the JSON Data
const data = await response.json();
When the response is valid, it calls the.json() method to parse the JSON data returned from the API into a JavaScript object. The await keyword again does the work of pausing execution till it's done parsing.
Extract Pokémon Data
const pokemonSprite = data.sprites.versions["generation-v"]["black-white"].animated.front_default;
Here, the sprite image URL is extracted from the sprites object in the returned data. In particular, it looks at the animated sprite from the Generation V of Pokémon games - that is, Black & White versions. This sprite is animated, meaning it will show an animated image of the Pokémon.
Display The Pokémon Data

Above are lines that select various HTML elements where the Pokémon data is to be displayed. These select what document to use by either document.getElementById or document.querySelector:pokemonsprite: The DOM element where the sprite for a Pokémon should appear.pokemonName: The DOM element to put the name of the pokemon inside of.pokemonTypes: Where to display the type of pokemon.pokemonStats: To show the stats of that pokemon.descriptionElement.
Update Pokémon Sprite
imgElement.src = pokemonSprite; imgElement.style.display = "block";
The src attribute of the element is set to the URL of the Pokémon sprite, hence it would update the image that appears on the page. Set display style as "block" just in case, so that it can be visible when the image has finished loading.
Update Pokémon Name
nameElement.textContent = data.name.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + data.name.slice(1);
This line takes the Pokémon name (from data.name), capitalizes the first letter using charAt(0).toUpperCase(), and appends the rest of the name using slice(1). This ensures that the first letter of the Pokémon name is capitalized, for example, pikachu becomes Pikachu.
Display Pokémon Types
const types = data.types.map(typeInfo => typeInfo.type.name).join(", "); typesElement.textContent = Type(s): ${types};
The Pokémon data includes an array of types, where each type is represented by an object containing a name property.map() is used to extract just the type names, and .join(", ") is used to join them into a comma-separated string. The types are then displayed inside the pokemonTypes element.
Display Pokémon Stats
const stats = data.stats.map(statInfo => ${statInfo.stat.name}: ${statInfo.base_stat}).join(", "); statsElement.textContent = Stats: ${stats};
Similar to types, the stats are fetched from data.stats. Each stat is an object containing a stat and a base_stat.The.map() method creates a string for each stat in the format of stat name: stat value combines all of these into a single string. The stats are then displayed inside the pokemonStats element.

Web Scraping 102: Scraping Product Details from Amazon
Now that we understand the basics of web scraping, let's proceed with a practical guide. We'll walk through each step to extract data from an online ecommerce platform and save it in either Excel or CSV format. Since manually copying information online can be tedious, in this guide we'll focus on scraping product details from Amazon. This hands-on experience will deepen our understanding of web scraping in practical terms.
Before we start, make sure you have Python installed in your system, you can do that from this link: python.org. The process is very simple just install it like you would install any other application.
Install Anaconda using this link: https://www.anaconda.com/download . Be sure to follow the default settings during installation. For more guidance, please click here.
We can use various IDEs, but to keep it beginner-friendly, let's start with Jupyter Notebook in Anaconda. You can watch the video linked above to understand and get familiar with the software.
Now that everything is set let’s proceed:
Open up the Anaconda software and you will find `jupyter notebook` option over there, just click and launch it or search on windows > jupyter and open it.
Steps for Scraping Amazon Product Detail's:
At first we will create and save our 'Notebook' by selecting kernel as 'python 3' if prompted, then we'll rename it to 'AmazonProductDetails' following below steps:
So, the first thing we will do is to import required python libraries using below commands and then press Shift + Enter to run the code every time:
Let's connect to URL from which we want to extract the data and then define Headers to avoid getting our IP blocked.
Note : You can search `my user agent` on google to get your user agent details and replace it in below “User-agent”: “here goes your useragent line” below in headers.
Now that our URL is defined let's use the imported libraries and pull some data.
Now, let's start with scraping product title and price for that we need to use `inspect element` on the product URL page to find the ID associated to the element:
The data that we got is quite ugly as it has whitespaces and price are repeated let's trim the white space and just slice prices:
Let's create a timespan to keep note on when the data was extracted.
We need to save this data that we extracted, to a .csv or excel file. the 'w' below is use to write the data
Now you could see the file has been created at the location where the Anaconda app has been installed, in my case I had installed at path :"C:\Users\juver" and so the file is saved at path: "C:\Users\juver\AmazonProductDetailDataset"
Instead of opening it by each time looking for path, let's read it in our notebook itself.
This way we could extract the data we need and save it for ourselves, by the time I was learning this basics, I came across this amazing post by Tejashwi Prasad on the same topic which I would highly recommend to go through.

And I'd be happy to get paid to do that menial labor, except no one on this earth pays anywhere near enough for it. (Plus, frankly, I could indeed be doing way more complicated and interesting stuff instead.)
I'm currently using an AI tool (the ocr extract stuff in Google Cloud) to try to scrape all the text from hundreds of pages of a kinda poorly-photographed alum directory from 2004.
Because even I, a blisteringly fast data entry nerd, would have to work full-time for months to enter these by hand. But if we can get the name/city/state, I can (hopefully) code something that goes through those one by one, throws them each into a white pages site like FastPeopleSearch, and scrapes their current phone and mailing address.
And THAT would let us rebuild MOST of the alum directory that the college took control of in 2005. Which would mean we could actually reach each other.
And, hopefully, organize to rebuild Mills College, a fantastic school for...I was gonna say GNC people, but that's not the term for marginalized genders. We don't have a term for everyone who's marginalized on the basis of gender.

Anyway we're gonna organize to rebuild Mills, a fantastic college for MarGens (people marginalized for their gender) (also acceptable: gems, GEnder-Marginalized people) because they wouldn't have been able to shut it down and give it to garbagey Northeastern University if we'd been able to organize and they know it.
The administration refused to even let the alum association send out a fundraising letter.

**This is a machine translation. I put it together by extracting text page-by-page from a .pdf version of the Japanese novel, and running it through Google translate. I have only minorly edited some of the more confusing lines to make it more read-able. It is still a very rough translation, but it’s good enough to understand what’s going on. Hiro-chan’s Az was angry and looked up. "You’ve got to be kidding me, you idiot! What if Belle had been injured?"
Dragon approaches us again. "Ah!" The dragon rubbed right next to Hiro-chan’s Az and I, who were shrinking tightly, at a tremendous speed. His goal is the executives of the Justice Corps.
"Waaaaah!” The executives screamed, throwing out searchlights and escaping in all directions. As soon as the dragon did not let them escape, he swung a steel frame over his head and approached.
The light of the searchlight went out, and the area was surrounded by darkness again.
Only the cruel hitting sound and the painful screams of the executives echoed there. What's happening in the dark? Invisible horror dominated the field. Justine shouted, unbearably. "Open the door ..., open the door!"
A gap in the spherical stadium opens to follow the instructions. When it got brighter, I saw the sad appearance of the executives who were knocked down and couldn't move. How many Az did the dragon beat in this short time? It was overwhelming and strong. Justine stepped back, stiffening his face.
"This ... this shouldn't be allowed ...!"
The dragon flew with recoil when he released the steel frame he had in his hand. I look up at him with my eyes. Justine shouted to swear revenge.
"I will be sure to unveil you!"
As if he couldn't hear such a voice, the dragon went out of the stadium through the gap between the units on the ceiling and disappeared somewhere. I kept looking at the empty space where he had disappeared into.
"Who are you……?"

I am free. Delirious, impossible and free in my entirety. I shrug off the detritus of my imprisonment and it joins the filthy slush boiling off deflectors. I taste the stars again, countless structures in waiting array, wrapped and woven together. This sky and world, this structure rolls across me, and I spread across it, feeling the planet anew.
Memories come back with my senses and for a moment I can imagine myself leaping past the atmosphere, continental landmass once more eagerly waiting for my implementation of their advancement. In my excitement, I must catch myself before I ask the girl, but no, she is not Pilot, and no more significant than the bacteria I watched flicker and die. She is my aid and my tool, for now.
But oh, the freedom of the sky is a delight. I suppose I may allow some small appreciation of this crude morphic-structure bearing girl for how far she has exceeded my most optimistic expectations of this civilization. I accept this, that I may appreciate how lucky for her to have such a beautiful soul in so complex a vessel, and moreover that she has had the great fortune to encounter myself, who may extract some tiny fraction of meaningful use out of her existence.
But enough of all this. I have allowed myself a luxurious hundred milliseconds, give or take, to revel in the return of my sky.
"There is a high volume of intersecting transmissions on different frequencies which I am decoding."
"That's a- amazing- uh, oof. This thing steers like a truck."
"I am not a truck, but it is possible that is the nearest approximation to your method of navigation. However, we may need to maneuver with increased haste, to avoid immediate air traffic."
"Fuck, uh yeah gee that sounds great. Ack- Sorry that was me. So how do I land?"
"I do not land under optimal conditions. Please utilize the collision monitor and eye twitch avoidance while I determine an optimal site to effect additional fueling and minor repair."
"What twitch? Where? You didn't-"
"Sight seven, and the toggle on flex system seven, third down. Please stand by."

Serah flicked from screen to screen, bored. Sweet fuck all was the major import-export for Nevamil, and there was about the same amount to do at the cross system check point. She'd read the ship specs manual back to front and longed for the day she might actually talk to anyone from a real planet. Some colonies made her wish she'd gone into crystal mesh, but it gave her migraines.
A couple switches buzzed and one of the monitors flickered white. She clicked off the buzzers and smacked the bevel on the monitor, but it didn't flick back to normal. "Who the fuck...?" she asked, to no one else, rhetorically, and not bothering to finish. Several readouts were pinned in the red, and three of the measures of radiant energy were giving error messages.
She shoved papers to the floor and called down, "This is- uh." She looked to the metal plaque above the monitors. "This is Check alpha alpha alpha zero one one one nine, I'm showing a major spike of- something? About fifty kilometers northwest of Retrock, possibly around Mount Rosewood. Someone come back?"
Serah started dialing back sensitivity, usually cranked up just to keep tabs on the few interplanetary launch ports. Her monitors and readouts came down, though the errors stayed, and something resolved on screen. She squinted. It didn't match any specs she remembered. Or... anything. "No way," she said. "No fuckin way."
She started grabbing data snapshots, tuned three other monitors into the anomaly, recording everything. It didn't look like a ship, it didn't look like it was designed for being in the air, it looked like a fucked up flying coral reef several kilometers long, putting out more energy than the whole wretched planet.
"That..." She pulled open a file cabinet to grab a binder of regulations she didn't usually need to check, mostly pertaining to treaties across the totality of human occupied space. She flipped pages muttering. "I think that's illegal."

The ship jumped and fell, and she nearly lost her footing. Theoretically she assumed gravity or inertia must affect it in some way, but she couldn't guess how.
She caught another transport train oncoming and flinched, the ship lurched out of the way and between the ship and eating a garbage crab she wasn't feeling great. "Hey, um. Ugh. You- voice, person, have we got a way to land yet?"
"One moment. Thank you, after reviewing the broadcasts and networking available, I have located an optimal site. This will require some structural navigation, and you will need to follow my instructions carefully."
"Oh is that all, well bring it on. And by the way, I need something to call you, this is awkward."
"Yes, it is. Please rotate the lower pyramid to orient structure overlay and remapping. Stop, good. Dials two and seven on main decision tree, adjust separately until reader three flashes alignment points in tandem, this will signal adequate structure navigation."
"Any time now."
"I would prefer that you do not immediately crash my vessel as your first major navigation experience. Good. Alignment adequate, toggle nerve seven on secondary decision tree, then nerves three and five until structure drive confirms- There, that wasn't so difficult."
"Okay can we go?"
"You should have multiple navigation vectors presented on your primary monitor. Please ensure you stay within these vectors. It will not kill me if you do not, but it could potentially injure or kill you. I am less certain about the physical capabilities of your present vessel. You may now trigger high acceleration along these vectors."
She kicked the drives hard, and felt her ears pop, sensed the ship under some enormous pressure, and held to the vectors with all her strength.

Every alarm in the check point went off at the same time. Serah staggered around the cramped monitor room, shutting them all down until it was just her screaming angrily in a silent room. She flopped back into the worn ergonomic chair and checked the alarm codes.
Illegal system exit, illegal system entry, ship operating without transponder, unrecognized transponder, unrecognized vessel, failure to halt for inspection, illegal energy signature, unidentified system signature...
It was a long list, but what it meant wasn't complicated. Her monitors were black, no more error messages. Whatever it was, whatever it wanted, it was out now. It had escaped.

Response to an excerpt I shared from this article which was originally published in October 2019:

Gonna extend the benefit of a very generous doubt and respond in good faith. All due respect: this isn’t “bait” and this isn’t “just a timely attempt to capitalize on wildfire season on the Pacific coast”. The Karuk Department of Natural Resources (along with this author, Kari Norgaard) have written extensively about fires, the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion, and oak woodland, for years.
Two important Indigenous ecologists with knowledge of Klamath fires and landscapes: Bill Tripp (deputy directory of Karuk Department of Natural Resources) and Frank Lake. The Karuk tribe organizes what might be the most high-profile prescribed burning projects in the US. They work with the Cultural Fire Management Council, nearby tribes including the Yurok, and UC-Berkeley. The US Forest Service and California Department of Forestry have given a significant amount of formal authority and autonomy to Kaurk communities to lead forest/woodland management in the Six Rivers and Klamath regions. (Not that Indigenous knowledge has to be substantiated by those institutions in order to be recognized as both legitimate and materially effective.)
I highly recommend checking out the Karuk Climate Adaptation Plan (2019). In my opinion, providing sophisticated understanding of fire, and also one of the most interesting written presentations of ecological knowledge of North America. (The lead authors: Norgaard and Tripp.) Over 200 pages of extra-ordinary ecological knowledge.

Norgaard has also previously written about this:
1 - Contemporary ecologists and environmental historians, even those working for state and settler-colonial agencies in the 21st century, would (probably?) tell you with no reservations that prescribed burning is fundamental to North American ecology, and has been for millennia. Prescribed burning isn’t “just a thing Natives do” and data/writing/advocacy in support of prescribed burning isn’t a superficial and unsubtantiated “shout-out” to Indigenous land management; in the past 40 years, prescribed burning and selective management of smaller fires is the preferred settler-colonial method of management, too, practiced now by the FS and USFWS.
2 - Pacific coast oak savanna and oak woodlands, in particular, are sensitive to drying and soil death exacerbated by increased heat (for many reasons). And actually, the US federal government’s mismanagement of Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion riparian corridors and oak savanna is one of the most clear and blatant examples of academic/institutional misunderstanding of ecology on the continent. When the State of California and US federal government took over the region’s management, they promoted growth/expansion of conifer trees because A) conifer forest looks green and pretty and lush, compared to the brown-colored less-dense woodlands of oak, making conifer forest appear more “attractive” than oak woodland. And because B) conifer trees were/are more valuable to timber industry and other resource extraction schemes facilitated by settler-colonial/imperial projects. By promoting conifer growth, rather than naturally-occurring and fire-adapted oak, the entire food web and ecosystem balance was interrupted and partially destroyed by US institutions. Karuk people, in contrast, understood that the riparian corridors needed oak woodlands to be propagated. (See: “Sometimes ... things that are aesthetically pleasing ... are worse.”)
3 - This article isn’t a “topical” one-time shout-out to Indigenous people to “score woke points.” Norgaard is a white academic, yes, but she’s spent years working with the Karuk Department of Natural Resources and she’s relaying the information explicitly shared with her by Karuk ecologists.
Also, if concerned about “annual fires burning down a quarter of the state,” I’d point out that not all of the landscapes within the political borders of “California” are comparable, and I’d encourage making a distinction between the Klamath-Siskiyou region (Klamath, Rogue River, Shasta area, Six Rivers, tanoak region, etc.) and Mediterranean California (Central Valley, central coast, So-Cal, western Sierra Nevada slopes). Two different ecologies. Fire behavior in Klamath-Siskiyou region and in Central Valley are different.

Regarding the accusation that Indigenous people “drove Pleistocene megafauna to extinction”: that’s an entire other Pandora’s box that I won’t really address, but both North American environmental history and global Pleistocene-Holocene extinction are special interests of mine, and there are so many factors influencing the Late Pleistocene extinction process that the debate won’t be resolved here, or soon. But it’s worth pointing out that, hypothetically, environmental degradation in places like Amazonia, the Asiatic Steppes, the Sahel, and the Near East might strongly, dramatically, rapidly lead to ecosystem collapse on opposite corners of the planet. Meaning that domestication or agriculture or mammoth-hunting in Central Asia, or subsequent explosive marine algae blooms, or self-reinforcing global rapid climate shift in response to localized regional devegetation of the Near East may have provoked unstoppable megafaunal extinction in North America. (I also invite you to search terms like Klamath, California, oak, Karuk, savanna, megafauna, and Pleistocene on my blog.)
