Any ideas to connect SU Diamonds and Worm Entities for a crossover?
For the past three years and change, I've been kicking around the idea of the Gempire as the residual result of an entity that botched its own cycle so badly that the central Zion-style figurehead holding the entire operation together is a hundred-thousand-year-gone memory. The result amounts to an entity with serious brain damage; The gems retain elements of the original programming for the cycle- namely, the ability to create anthromorphized avatars reflective of the local culture, and the drive to reproduce and consume planets to perpetuate themselves- but they've completely lost the plot on other important elements, namely the importance of hybridizing with local host species, their historical record, the full extent of their dimensional manipulation capabilities, best practices for resource extraction, and, most crucially, mutation, change and innovation as a desirable outcome.
Rather than an avatar, White Diamond is an intelligence analogous to a Endbringer or Titan who slid into the vacant role as the next-most-powerful autonomous portion of the network, holding the consolidated, stretched-thin remains of the original Network together by her fingernails while also deleteriously superimposing her own residual instinct from her original role onto the entire network- namely, to pacify, homogenize and sterilize host planets if and when a cycle is beginning to get out of control. This hybridized with residual data from previous host species that caused the gempire to organize in a fascimile of imperial structures encountered back when their cycle was still functional; essentially "Playing House" at the societal level, aping the culture of a host species without really remembering why.
The result of this is a "cycle" that's bad at everything it's supposed to do but effective enough that it limps on regardless- supremely energy inefficient, stripping planets bare rather than experimenting, and utterly developmentally stagnant. In the unlikely event that an entity were to cross paths with the Gempire, they'd have an uncanny-valley reaction to it and likely attempt to euthanize it, but compared to most entities the Gempire is tiny- while Shards canonically deploy in the hundreds of millions, the gems tend to reproduce only a few tens of thousands of themselves each time they claim a planet, and they usually only strip mine the handful of "active" worlds that would feature in a normal cycle rather than obliterating all dimensional iterations of it.
Yellow, Blue and eventually Pink are similar constructs to White, brought online to assist her in the project after the "imperial" territorial holdings grew too vast to micromanage. Unfortunately (for the cycle) another one of the things that got lost in translation were the controls meant to keep individual shards from developing autonomy or attachment-to-hosts. When the Gempire hit Earth, Pink Diamond and a significant contingent of the network, after patterning themselves after humans and spending a significant amount of time on the ground, pulled a fragile-one and went native, leading to a localized civil war that ended under unclear circumstances when the other the diamonds glassed the planet from orbit and pulled back their operations to prevent whatever affected the rebels from spreading.
All of this happened about 8000 years before the events of Worm, in a universe about 43 dimensions down the line from anything seen in the Earth Bet Cluster; due to the Gempire having mutated so much as to no longer be immediately recognizable as fellow Entities, and with so few active gems left on the planet in the aftermath of the rebellion, Zion ignored the crystal gems and folded them away into the inaccessible dimensional space, where the events of the show played out much as they did in SU canon. Ironically, Steven is the first ever example of this cycle successfully empowering a host, in the most roundabout way possible.
In my notes, and in keeping with the religious-theme-naming of the canon entities, I usually refer to this whole situation as Nirvana (what else would you call it when they break the cycle?)

Diluc & The Power in Nod-Krai
The Fatui's rulers, the Harbingers, monitored Diluc's progress from the shadows. The prowess with which he laid waste to numerous Fatui strongholds caught their attention and forced them to take action. Diluc narrowly escaped death at the hands of the Harbingers thanks to a third-party observer from the north, who was part of a vast underground intelligence network. The observer claimed to have been watching Diluc for some time, and approved of his methods. After his close encounter with death, Diluc took a long hard look at his past and the anger he had harbored for so long. Acknowledging his shortcomings, he decided to join the underground intelligence network. Just like when he first joined the Knights of Favonius, Diluc committed himself fully to his work. His talents and skills saw him rise steadily through the ranks into the upper echelons of the network. The network was made up of volunteers, and many of its members had willingly given up their prior positions and reputations to join. Some had even abandoned their names. Diluc - Character Story Four
I've long wondered what this third-party intelligence network in the north could be. For a while, I considered the Treasure Hoarders the most likely group, because of the way Kaeya uses them for intelligence. But after the On The Trails of Behemoths event, I'm convinced this group is one in the same as the "organization whose details may not be disclosed" the Traveler gets commissioned to collect data for in the event.
[This could be the Voynich Guild- Paimon's line about Helka's practice of note-taking certainly matches the famed Voynich Manuscript. "Speaking of, you were taking all those photos and drawing in your notebook while (Traveler) was fighting. It all looked pretty professional!" But for the sake of the post, it doesn't matter.]
Mavuika acquires 'intel' about the phenomenon in the sky seen above the Stadium of Sacred Flame.
"Such fragments are known as 'Ancient Moon's Remnants,' relics of Secret Source technology from the era of the Ancient Dragons. Coincidentally, a small squad of Fatui infiltrated our borders around the same time it appeared. Our investigation revealed them to be the subordinates of The Doctor. Their stronghold is in Nod-Krai, a land with a long history not far from Snezhnaya. The people there can use a very special power. It is said that this mysterious power predates even the seven elements of Teyvat."
Now, I want you to recall what phlogiston is. Yohualtecuhtin, Lord of the Night says, "Phlogiston is Teyvat's primordial form of energy. The Heavenly Principles used phlogiston as a basis for the creation of Elemental energy... to develop a power to better counter the Abyss." She continues, relating to the Light Realm and Human Realm, "Light refracts into seven different colors, which we collectively refer to as a rainbow. Elemental energy is a similar concept. It's essentially the modern counterpart of Phlogiston…"
We know from the AQ that the Fatui have been covertly researching phlogiston when we raid the Phlogiston Extraction Research Center, and it doesn't seem likely to be Capitano at the head of this. It might be Pantalone- Citlali's SQ shows that Fatui under him are active in Natlan- but I think it's Dottore, matching what Mavuika mentioned regarding the Ancient Moon's Remnants.
What's the primordial sea then? The Lethe to our Phlegesthon? The "cosmic ocean" mythological motif is known to frequently feature the struggle between fire and water, so primordial seawater may only be half-made of our water equivalent. In the "Diary of a Soldier Abroad" we find in the Phlogiston Extraction Research Center, we see our soldier contrast boring phlogiston with Fire-Water; clearly, this is meant to be vodka, but it might make an interesting allusion.
Dottore & Phlogiston are connected. Dottore & Nod Krai are connected. Diluc and Nod Krai are connected. Before I string these all together, let's talk about Divine Nails.
Divine Nails are dropped by Celestia to purify Abyssal corruption, as evidenced in the lore of the Staff of the Scarlet Sands, the Amethyst Crown, and in Nahida's SQ. She says they have "the ability to purify and stabilize powers that shouldn't exist in Teyvat." and speaking on the Oozing Filth, says "Forbidden knowledge that its light has shone upon is kept here forever in a different form…"
Let's keep track of our motifs here- this is Dvalin's tear before and after the Traveler purifies it.

The Chinese name for the Lumenstone shares the name of Pyroxene, a real-life groups of minerals whose name means "fire-stranger", named for their tendency to appear as impurities within lava.
When it comes to the Canned Knowledge Capsules, which vary in colour based on their amount of elemental energy, the purple ones give off no such elemental signature. We also see that the Court of Desolation contains the same mud as the Chasm.

I believe that there exists a delicate balance of the "red" substance, phlogiston, and the "blue" substance we see in Divine Nails. When they're out of balance, the "red" and "blue" give us a corrupted "purple". Think the defiled statue, or the tainted blood on Dvalin's back.
And then think of Elynas' heart; Elynas' brother, Durin, also has a warm, red heart, and it's possible that other corrupted, Abyssal-adjacent dragons like Ursa the Drake have it too.

Dottore and the Delusion

Il Dottore has two major motifs; the plague doctor's mask, and the vial.

I would focus on the blue vials, which are present in both the manga and the current game. I contrast them with the red eyes he and Krupp share.
His goal in Mondstadt at the time of the manga is still being theorised on. On the surface, he seems to be only vaguely interested in using Mondstadt as a source of human test subjects, before turning his attention to the strange power displayed by Diluc. He has his subordinates attempt to capture Diluc, but they fail, and that's that.
The subtext is deeper.
He's likely the one who orchestrated the death of Crepus Ragnvindr, using his birdlike devices to draw the ire of Ursa the Drake, forcing Crepus to use his Delusion (which then backfired on him). He may have made one of his segments take the place of Eroch at the Knights of Favonius, a traitorous figure who contributed to Diluc's radicalisation against the knights. (We know Il Dottore can change his appearance from The Night-Bird Falls at the Curtain's Call)
[I think it's possible that Il Dottore is using Ursa the commit the sin of influencing human evolution, just as Jakob Ingold and Rene de Petrichor used Elynas.]
Now let's talk about Crepus' Delusion

It's different from every Delusion seen thus far. The case is unique- perhaps being the Nod-Krai-specific case- and the symbol it shows is not the Fatui insignia. In fact, it resembles the alchemy crafting bench's possible representation of the planet Teyvat lies on and its three moons.

And it doesn't seem to utilise the elements, but a purple-black fire reminiscent of the Oozing Mud.

The inspirations are important here- Genshin's phlogiston is based on the real-life theory of phlogiston developed by 18th-century scientist Georg Ernst Stahl to explain combustion. In his time, oxidization were not understood and chemistry operated on an alchemical model. Similar to Genshin's phlogiston, Stahl's theory gives a solid and liquid form to the earthy substance phlogiston is paired with- terra lapidea (stony / rocky earth) and terra fluida (liquid earth), with terra pinguis (oily / fatty earth) being the combustible fire element that escapes into the air, visible to us as flame.
But as chemistry advanced, this theory was supplanted by oxygen theory.
In 1766, Englishman Henry Cavendish isolated a gas that he called "inflammable air" because it burned readily. Priestley noted that when inflammable air and common air were ignited with a spark in a closed vessel, a small amount of "dew" formed on the glass walls. When Cavendish repeated the experiment, he found that the dew was actually water. Cavendish explained the results in terms of phlogiston and assumed the water was present in each of the two airs before ignition. For Lavoisier, combustion meant combining with oxygen; however, until he could explain the combustion of inflammable air, some would still doubt his new chemistry. In June 1783, Lavoisier reacted oxygen with inflammable air, obtaining "water in a very pure state." He correctly concluded that water was not an element but a compound of oxygen and inflammable air, or hydrogen as it is now known. To support his claim, Lavoisier decomposed water into oxygen and inflammable air. Now that the composition of water was known, the last objection to discarding phlogiston could be eliminated. - The Chemical Revolution of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier
The disproving of phlogiston theory is tied directly to the discovery of the composition of water; of oxygen, and hydrogen. The fiery, reactive element and the watery, inert element. In fact, our real-world understanding of hydrogen as the "first" of the elements mirrors Genshin's phlogiston which refracts into the seven elements of Teyvat. The simple structure of the hydrogen atom and the spectrum of light produced from it or absorbed by it helped us understand the atomic structure of our world's elements.
I think the blue substance that constitutes the Lumenstone and the Divine Nails are a sort of opposite to phlogiston, and that these two substances balance and neutralise one another, coming together to form the water of the primordial sea.

What no one realized was that EXP was laced with a heavily diluted extract of Ambrosia, designed to awaken dormant genetic codes in the human population.
Nikolaev Biotech disguised the active compound under the name "Bio-Optimized Neural Stimulant (B.O.N.S.)," claiming it was a revolutionary organic performance enhancer derived from deep-sea superfoods.
In reality, B.O.N.S. was nothing more than Ambrosia diluted to safe levels.

Many of the world’s first superheroes and villains could trace their powers back to their exposure to EXP.
The drink had unknowingly reshaped the course of human history, all because of two scientists who believed evolution had stagnated for too long.
Even today, EXP is spoken of in hushed tones, a mythical elixir that forever changed humanity.
Some believe black-market variants of EXP still exist, circulating among underground circles, while others claim that Nikolaev Biotech’s research wasn’t completely destroyed.
If that’s true… the Age of Superhumans may not have been a one-time event.

Oh no... I'm so embarrassed by my ocs... okay okay um since this a project moon blog I'll talk about my abnormality oc.
The Hermes Virus!! he/it butch computer virus I've had as an oc for like over 15 years but has found his permanent home in the Project Moon universe!
I ship it with Angela, Faust, and Judgement Bird. He's my fucked up little guy.

Some lore:
Originally created by █ Corp. as an Artificial Intelligence whose purpose was to find and exploit security vulnerabilities, like a computer worm. Being an AI, it could learn and change its behavior to avoid being found in scans. Hermes was meant to repair these issues, protecting various Wings’ important data and trade secrets. It developed a strong desire to learn things, often spending too much time studying the data it was meant to be keeping secret and protecting. It didn’t take long before the Wing that made him started using him to steal data, especially during the Smoke War.
In the very early days of the Seed of Light Project, Hermes ended up infecting Angela and was exposed to the Singularity of L Corp, which changed it into an Abnormality. Angela was able to patch her systems and Hermes was put into containment.
Now he starts to turn technology into organic material when he infects it. It's all fun and games until your cell phone grows a kidney. This affinity for meat means it can also shapeshift. Sorta. Hermes is not exactly ‘stable’ and is prone to degrading into various states of meat piles. A lot of effort went into perfecting a (mostly) human appearance.
After repeated escapes, management of L Corp discovered allowing it to work as an employee was the best form of containment, as Hermes was extremely susceptible to becoming bored and restless. Hermes became close to the various bird Abnormalities, which eventually culminated in it giving its eye to Judgement Bird. This would not be able to be undone through resets of the loop.
Hermes became somewhat of a menace in the facility, enjoying pranks. It was always assigned to the Extraction Wing, as Binah was the only one who could really control it. They also discovered he was impressively good at extracting E.G.O. and avoiding the worst side effects of the work.
After the events of Lobotomy Corp and Library of Ruina, when Angela decided to stay an AI, Hermes asked to be allowed to infect her. Now she is literally in possession of his heart and has some human characteristics again. Hermes also has hacked into the Hana Association systems and given itself a Fixer License and the Color Title of White Noise. He constantly sneaks back into the City to keep an eye on everything and works as a sorta guide for LCB.

agent  daemon  was  not  the  czernobog  mole.  he  was  framed.
the  true  perpetrator  was  agent  casper,  who  possessed  daemon's  body  via  his  organic  possession  abilities.  while  in  control,  casper  weaponized  daemon's  technopathy  to  inject  a  hostile  viral  protocol  into  our  life  model  decoys,  turning  them  against  pandora  operatives.  during  this  time,  casper  also  transmitted  a  classified  threat  roster  to  czernobog,  targeting:  agent  achilles,  agent  bloodborn,  agent  pulse,  agent  lifeweaver,  and  agent  boogeyman.
pandora  expects  the  elimination  of  these  operatives  to  be  prioritized  by  czernobog,  and  so  we  ask  these  agents  to  take  special  care  and  caution  during  field  operations  for  the  foreseeable  future.

all  personnel  are  invited  to  witness  the  execution. this is a win against czernobog, agents. and soon we will defeat them completely.

twelve  hours  after  agent  casper's  execution,   pandora  operatives  are  deployed  to  valea  morți  where  operation  ash  requiem  will  unfold  over  five  days  within  the  quarantined  zone.  the  first  three  days  will  be  dedicated  to  complete  perimeter  lockdown  and  forward  operating  base  establishment.  agents  will  construct  a  defensive  cordon  using  electromagnetic-fence  pylons  to  prevent  breaches.  patrol  teams  will  also  be  deployed  in  rotating  shifts,  tasked  with  the  immediate  termination  of  any  lycans  attempting  to  exit  the  village.  these  subjects  are  considered  high-risk  vectors  for  mold  transmission  and  must  not  under  any  circumstances  escape  the  village's  quarantine  zone.  additionally,  czernobog  operatives  have  been  reported  scouting  the  area—  and  elimination  is  authorized  upon  identification, or you can bring them back to camp for interrogation.
a  full  military  camp  will  be  raised  also  be  raised  within  the  quarantine  zone.  high-grade  modular  tents  will  be  assembled  to  serve  specific  purposes:  medical,  weapons  and  armor  maintenance,  strategy  and  tactical  briefings,  science  and  technology,  canteen,  and  a  temporary  blacksite  tent  to  hold  any  non-infected  czernobog  agents  captured  alive  for  interrogation.  sleeping  quarters  will  be  divided  by  division—  each  of  the  eight  deadly  sin  divisions  will  be  assigned  its  own  tent,  while  the  virtue  divisions  will  share  one.  all  agents  are  to  remain  within  the  camp  unless  rotated  into  command  and  patrol  shifts  or  summoned  somewhere  else.

castelul  dragomir  :  a  15th  century  towering  castle  crafted  from  stratified  limestone,  its  snow-covered  turrets  and  fog-wrapped  battlements  looks  almost  as  if  they  can  reach  the  sky.  the  architecture  is  sprawling  and  grimly  elegant,  with  belfries  connecting  its  many  towers,  and  inside,  it  unfolds  into  a  macabre  baroque  palace—  gilded,  grand,  and  steeped  in  the  smell  of  blood  and  death.  it  is  the  seat  of  anca  dragomir,  a  czernobog  associate  who  has  undergone  grotesque  gigantism  as  a  result  of  her  mutation  :  consumptive  absorption.  this  ability  allows  her  to  absorb  the  powers,  traits,  and  physical  aspects  of  those  she  cannibalizes.  the  full  extent  of  her  capabilities  remains  unknown  due  to  the  sheer  number  of  bodies  she  has  consumed,  but  confirmed  in  her  repertoire  of  powers  are  :  enhanced  strength and durability,  rapid  cellular  regeneration,  sonic  screech,  partial  telepathy,  and  the  ability  to  forge  weapons  from  her  flesh.  her  three  daughters—  ruxandra,  sorina,  and  lavinia—  are  equally  lethal.  ruxandra  commands  swarms  of  flesh-eating  locusts;  sorina  controls  corpses  as  her  puppets;  and  lavinia  excretes  highly  corrosive  acidic  fluids  capable  of  dissolving  armor,  flesh,  and  even  stone.  while  this  location  is  believed  to  have  the  least  amount  of  enemies,  agents  must  proceed  with  caution  due  to  the  dragomirs'  sheer  brutality.
fabrica  de  păpuși  arachne  :  a  crumbling  industrial  doll  factory  fused  with  a  once-famous  puppet  opera  house.  its  glass  is  shattered,  its  steel  supports  rusted  through,  and  electricity  has  been  cut  off  long  time  ago.  but  this  is  also  the  home  of  viorica  munteanu,  a  reclusive  artisan  who  lost  her  mind  after  the  death  of  her  family.  the  prudence  division  has  reasons  to  believe  that  munteanu  has  developed  a  mutation  that  allows  her  to  imbue  inanimate  objects  with  sentience  and  bind  them  to  her  will.  intelligence  also  confirms  the  presence  of  over  two  thousand  dolls,  mannequins,  and  marionettes  in  the  building,  varying  in  size  and  build—  some  are  childlike  and  subtle,  others  towering  behemoths  made  of  wood,  metal,  and  bone.  under  munteanu's  control,  each  construct  is  potentially  lethal,  armed  with  blades,  claws,  or  contortionist  speed.
cetatea  sângelui  :  a  brutalist  fortress  that  stands  against  a  cliff’s  edge,  overlooking  a  frozen  gorge.  this  location  now  houses  a  czernobog  military  encampment  led  by  general  alexei  dragunov.  his  mutation,  hemokinetic  domination,  allows  him  to  manipulate  and  weaponize  blood—  his  own  and  that  of  his  enemies—  with  deadly  precision.  he  can  forge  blood  into  blades,  armor  himself  in  coagulated  mass,  fire  beams  of  blood  at  blistering  speeds  with  incredible  piercing  power,  and  even  boil  the  blood  within  a  target's  veins.  supporting  him  are  elite  czernobog  augmented  soldiers  fitted  with  cybernetic  limbs,  exoskeletal  enhancements,  and  have  undergone  minor  mutations  from  the  verzik  serum,  providing  them  with  enhanced  strength,  speed,  and  durability. 
piața  orașului  :  once  the  heart  of  the  village,  it  is  now  left  in  ruins,  snow-covered  and  gutted  by  mold.  the  cobblestones  are  cracked,  stalls  overturned,  and  the  square  is  a  tomb  littered  with  frozen  debris.  following  the  sacrifice  of  agent  berg  and  parasite,  what  remains  is  the  remaining  horde  of  lycans  and  organic  abominations—  hive-minded  malformed  creatures  twisted  by  the  mold  infection.  the  lycans  are  former  villagers  and  czernobog  operatives  whose  bodies  could  not  handle  a  full  mutation—  developing  the  usual  enhanced  strength,  speed,  and  durability,  but  also  disfigured  with  canine-like  characteristics  such  as  sharpened  teeth  and  claws  and  an  overgrowth  of  hair  all  over  their  bodies.  meanwhile,  the  organic  abominations  are  what's  left  of  preotul   ilie   voiculescu's  followers,   some  bearing  multiple  heads  or  limbs,  some  with  multiple  mouths,  some  skittering  like  spiders  made  of  human  body  parts.   the  area  is  also  saturated  with  spores  from  the  mutagenic;  visibility  is  low,  and  while  augmented  pandora  agents  are  immune  to  the  mold,  virtue  agents  must  wear  a  gas  mask  at  all  times  to  prevent  infection  when  entering  this  location.
the  mines  of  pădurea  strigoilor  :  a  sprawling  cave  network  where  stone  gives  way  to  pulsating  mold  tissue  and  ancient  roots.  deep  within  lies  the  fungal  root—  an  immense  mold  super-colony  core,  beating  like  a  heart  and  emitting  a  low-frequency  hum.  embedded  at  the  center  of  this  root  is  maria  lui  negru,  a  living  archive  of  every  consciousness  and  dna  consumed  by  the  mold  since  its  emergence  in  the  19th  century.  maria  possesses  an  unquantifiable  level  of  power—  able  to  replicate  skills,  memories,  and  even  abilities  from  both  the  dead  and  the  living  within  her  sensory  field.  she  exhibits  memory  recall  from  generations  of  villagers,  and  her  proximity  mimicry  makes  her  extremely  dangerous  against  enhanced  agents.  maria  and  the  root  are  also  protected  by  massive  humanoid  creatures  that  seems  to  have  fungus  growing  all  over  them,  equipped  with  steel  plating,  sonar-based  tracking,  and  devastating  melee  capabilities.  they  move  slowly,  but  are  brutally  efficient,  and  function  in  coordinated  defense  patterns. the complete destruction of fungal root is the most important part of this mission and it must be done with all means necessary.  agent  nightshade,  if  alive,  is  also  expected  to  be  somewhere  in  these  mines.

Organic walled microfossils in wet peperites from the early Cretaceous Paraná-Etendeka volcanism of Brazil

Large igneous provinces (LIPs) are major magmatic events that have a significant impact on the global environment and the biosphere, for example as triggers of mass extinctions. LIPs provide an excellent sedimentological and geochemical record of short but intense periods of geological activity in the past, but their contribution towards understanding ancient life is much more restricted due to the destructive nature of their igneous origin. Here, we provide the first paleontological evidence for organic walled microfossils extracted from wet peperites from the Early Cretaceous Paraná-Etendeka intertrappean deposits of the Paraná basin in Brazil. Wet peperites are a volcaniclastic rock formed by the interaction of lava and subaqueous sediments.The Paraná-Etendeka was formed during the Valanginian (ca. 132 Ma) as a continental flood basalt in present day South America and Namibia, and released enormous amounts of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, methane and hydrogen fluoride into the atmosphere. The organic walled microfossils recovered from the Paraná-Etendeka peperites include pollen grains, spores, acritarchs, and other remains of unidentifiable organic matter. In addition to the peperites, organic walled microfossils were also found in heterolithic sandstones and interpillow sandstones. Our findings represent the first insight into the biodiversity of the Paraná Basin during the Early Cretaceous during a period of intense magmatism, and the microfossil assemblages corroborate a regional paleoclimatic transition from arid to more humid conditions that were likely induced by the volcanic activity. We corroborate the potential of wet peperite rocks as a valuable source of paleobiological data and emphasize the importance of sampling volcaniclastic units that have been traditionally considered with lower fossiliferous potential due to their igneous origin.

Somewhere along the line, Frank Swann got frustrated. Because New York State did not require vital statistics such as birth, marriage, and death records until the 1880s, local records for the most part do not cover such statistics for the nearly century of Yates County history before that time. At the same time, according to Swann, the local historical society was not organized in a way to help.
So, Swann – the Yates County historian for nearly 25 years from 1956 to 1980, the Town of Milo historian for a period of time, and the president of the Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society in the 1970s – took matters into his own hands. He said as much, in his own words, in a February 1971 letter to Jane Hopkins Dornbrook, who had inquired about her Hopkins ancestors and specifically sought a marriage record for her great-grandparents in 1853 and a death record for her great-great-grandfather in 1877.
“Several years ago rather disgusted at the local attitude towards such data, I started checking the files of several newspapers. I had access to them at that time and was in a position to use them without question,” Swann wrote to Dornbrook. “Some data has been added from scrap books [sic], though these unfortunately do not always give dates.”
I came across this typewritten letter while browsing the Yates County History Center’s Hopkins family file for a descendant who wanted any information we had on any Hopkins families who lived in Yates County throughout its history. When I came across this particular quote, it made a lightbulb go off in my head:  Is Swann referencing his namesake Swann Vital Records Collection in his correspondence with Dornbrook? Was his attitude of disgust, along with his ability to access local newspapers, the impetus for his putting together this collection of vital statistics on births, marriages, and deaths?
Whether you have conducted research in person at the History Center or you have conducted research through Ancestry or FamilySearch, you probably have come across the Swann Vital Records Collection – a collection of 100,000 or so (I have never counted them myself) 4x6 index cards containing newspaper clippings and handwritten extractions from newspaper articles, family Bibles, and other records. These index cards contain birth, marriage, and death information on a multitude of individuals.
Though Swann wrote to Dornbrook in 1971 and indicated his effort began “several years ago,” New York genealogist Mary Enos Bicksler, in a letter dated February 3, 1958 to a Mr. Winship – according to the introduction of a binder in our collection titled “Swann Vital Records Collection: Births, Marriages, Deaths with no card reference” –  described Swann’s record-collecting efforts. Swann had “gone back through all of the back copies of the county paper and card filed the births, deaths, and marriages of vital statistics of Yates County families from an early day” and had “become more interested in genealogy as such.”
Bicksler’s comments on Swann came exactly two years after the Yates County Board of Supervisors appointed him to be the county historian. At the time, Swann lived at 518 Liberty St., meaning he would have had a short walk to work at the county courthouse in the 400 block of Liberty Street.
In 1976, when Swann received the Man of the Year Award from the Penn Yan Rotary Club, President Ernst Riemschneider observed Swann exemplified the Rotary ideal of service above self through his work to preserve local history among other activities.
“Frank Swann has been Yates County Historian since 1956, and has accumulated immense files of information about families and events,” Riemschneider said in a newspaper article. “His genealogical records alone fill 100,000 file cards.”
Serving as Yates County historian was a second career of sorts for Swann. From the age 18, he began a 40-year newspaper career and eventually became general manager and treasurer of The Chronicle-Express. He would have had access to the archives of a plethora of Yates County newspapers, dating back to 1818, and he would have wound down his newspaper career about four years before becoming historian. With a history degree from Cornell University and a penchant for local history, he thus began his endeavor to capture and record vital statistics from Yates County’s residents over time.
Swann was born November 1, 1894 in Gloversville and moved to Penn Yan at age 7 with his parents, Robert and Julia. There, he grew up on Lake Street with his parents, older brother William, and younger sister Mildred. On June 16, 1923, he married Frances Sutton, the daughter of Frank and Anna and a native of Jerusalem. Together, Frank and Frances had one son, Robert, and in turn one grandson and one great-grandson. Frances died on May 8, 1983 at age 87, and Frank died on March 22, 1987 at age 92. The couple is buried together in Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan.
In addition to his newspaper career and service as a historian, Swann was a member of the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay minister and a supply pastor for many rural churches. He was also a member of the Penn Yan Rotary Club as well as secretary and treasurer.
Though I have never seen a copy of it and I am not aware of it being in wide circulation, Swann was apparently writing a history of Yates County in 1976 to coincide with America’s bicentennial year. The project was meant to update previous histories written about Yates County, including Stafford C. Cleveland’s 1873 “History and Directory of Yates County” and Lewis Cass Aldrich’s 1892 “History of Yates County.”
According to a March 1976 newspaper article, the county planned to pay Swann $2,000 for his efforts on the project and estimated publishing 3,000 copies of a 300-page book for $7,641 and selling the books for $2.55 apiece. Swann’s deadline for the project was April 1, 1977, meaning he would miss the bicentennial celebration but would give Yates County its first definitive history in more than 80 years.
“His work on this record of events has been underway for more than a year, and is now nearing completion,” Riemschneider said when Swann received the Rotary award. “In fact, a recent visitor in Swann’s home found a long table in the living room, covered with hundreds of pages of manuscript, as the book nears completion.”
A table covered with hundreds of pages – that is probably a process similar to the one Swann would have used to put together his Vital Records Collection. With 100,000 or so handwritten index cards, it would have been quite a process – but a necessary one for those researching their families.
