The people were always looking away to where you couldn't see. The whole time, I thought there was something coming. Then, at the end, it was death that came.
-Fifteen Dogs, Andre Alexis, 2015. (In reference to characters watching Tokyo Story)

Title: Fifteen Dogs
Author: André Alexis
Rating: 5 out of 5
Review: Each time I visit my favorite used bookstore I make it a point to buy a book I know nothing about by an author I’ve never heard of. Fifteen Dogs was one such choice. It intrigued me by the title and the concept: Apollo and Hermes make a bet to see if animals given human understanding will feel the same as humans do. As they pass a vet clinic, the decision is made to bless the fifteen dogs with, what the gods deem, is the gift of human understanding with the expectation that in order for Hermes to win, at least one of the dogs must die happy. It’s a concept incredibly well written and well executed. It is also a concept that leads to some of the most emotionally raw and brutal moments I have ever read. The emotional brutality is not just at the expense of our animal characters but the human characters as well. Alexis walks the line between what is the human experience and what might be the animal experience if we had full knowledge of their own ideals. I was devastated many a time during this reading and truly was surprised I didn’t end up in tears by the end of this. Quite devastating, quite heartbreaking, but a unique read that will stay with me for quite some time.

y'all ever read poetry and realise why only the poet dog in "Fifteen Dogs" got a happy ending?
(even though I deeply, fervently wish Majnoun also had a happy ending. But I get it. That's the point.)

“... she refused to allow anyone - even Miguel - to refer to Majnoun as 'her' dog. - I'm as much his as he's mine, she'd insist. Her friends - and her husband - thought this an annoying eccentricity. Majnoun knew what she meant - that she was not his master - and he was grateful. But in his heart he felt as if he did belong to her, in the sense that he was a part of Nira and she a part of him.”
