Whispered Praises

It started as a habit. A casual whisper in passing.

“Nice catch,” he’d murmur when she flagged a subtle arrhythmia.

“Lovely call,” when she triaged a patient straight to cath and saved them ten precious minutes.

“Good job, Dr. Collins,” when she finished a trauma chart at record speed.

Always low, always warm - right at the shell of her ear or at the back of her neck. And always when no one else was around to hear.

She told herself it didn’t mean anything. Just Robby being Robby. He praised the nurses, too. Called Perlah “sharp” last week. Said Dana had “great instincts.”

But he didn’t lean in when he said it to them. Didn’t brush past with that barely-there touch on their lower back. Didn’t make their stomach flip like they’d swallowed something molten.

Now, every time she sat down to chart, she caught herself glancing over her shoulder.

Waiting for him.

And when he did pass by, voice pitched like a secret between lovers?

Her fingers froze on the keyboard. Her throat tightened. Her breath hitched.

Goosebumps every single time.

And lower - God help her - her body noticed. She shifted in her seat, thighs pressing tight, biting her cheek just to stay present. Because what in the actual hell was wrong with him?

They weren’t together. Hadn’t been for years. They were colleagues, barely even friends most days. But his voice? That damn voice was a weapon. Like he knew what it did to her.

She swore the next time he whispered “good job”, she was going to drag him into the nearest empty exam room and remind him - thoroughly - why playing with fire got people burned.

Because if Michael Robinavitch didn’t stop whispering sweet nothings in her ear, she was going to ruin her scrubs and her career in the same afternoon.

And honestly?

It might be worth it.
