So, I've been experimenting with NixOS.
Currently my biggest problem might be due to the Gui version needing... let's say, a little bit of work.
1. Flakes shouldn't be considered experimental anymore, nor should the cli.
2. Post installation, firefox should open automatically and go to a landing page for nix pkgs that walks you through installing your first flake from it (you know, big pointy overlay arrows.)
3. The substituters' flow needs to be rethought. Rather than needing users to be trusted to add a substituter when installing a flake, the user should be told, clearly, with an entire, glowing text block of red, the dangers of adding third party substituters. They should then be asked if they would like to add the listed substituter anyways. If they choose yes, and are not a trusted user, it should prompt for a password, and elevate.
4. Speaking of the nixpkgs directory, there should be a pre-installed addin that lets you install flakes directly from nixpkgs, it could just add an "install flake" button that, well, runs whatever install commands are listed. Potentially could be expanded to include github, gitlab, and flakehub.
5. A bit more of an ambitious idea, but a gui for flake management would be nice. I think that's the nix-conf-editor that snowfall has, but it has some issues. Maybe even a helvium style node editor that lets you specify which apps can speak to each other could be cool.
What does all this mean though?
I think if the above changes were made, nixos would be a much more user-friendly system, to the point that even an idiot could use it.

A new feature for 2024 is MVAC’s Video Glossary with short videos explaining archaeological terms.  For our first entries we’ll be looking at -
Flakes - A flake is a piece of stone that was chipped off of a rock. Flakes are the most common artifact we find at archaeological sites in the La Crosse region.
and
Temper - Temper is a material mixed with clay to change its characteristics, usually to prevent vessels from cracking as they dry and are fired.
