Chapter 4
They made it back to the Eagle Clan village at daybreak, just as the first rays of early light touched the earth and migrated through the trees above. It painted the ground cover with a dappling effect, shifting penumbras and warming daisies.
Mae walked among the apes wisely sticking close to Noa. Anaya gave her a wide berth all the while, nervous eyes flicking her way when she strayed too close. Soona was much the same, save for the steady eye contact when they did trade looks. The rest of the small contingent remained at a respectful if suspicious distance; only Noa seemed moderately comfortable with her in his immediate vicinity.
The welcome party at the village consisted of a few curious ape children and Dar, Noa’s mother. She threw her arms around her son, gave Mae a curious look, and then patted Noa on the back before speaking in hushed tones with Anaya and Soona. Mae stood awkwardly, highly aware of being the only human amongst sentient animals. There was still the chance one or more of them might try to assume issue with her for the flood she set upon them, and for this her guard remained up. The village, despite her paranoia, buzzed about her without fail. Apes were climbing half-built structures, connecting beams, and the young ran amongst a small herd of horses at pasture in a clearing dotted with wildflowers. Their shouts and hoots of joy reached beyond the treetops, unmarred by the fact their clan had barely survived the year.
Because of her.
Eventually Noa returned to her side, gesturing for her to follow him with that world-weary look he usually sported. Relieved, Mae followed and found him leading her off to a crude shack that resembled the one in which they had first met; it seemed these were used primarily to store fish. This one, however, had a different purpose.
Inside the raw-wood walls was a cache of human weapons and supplies. An ape of stature stood posted at the door, nodding at Noa but glaring balefully at Mae as they simultaneously ducked inside.
Everything was abandoned on the floor in a haphazard pile: a few rucksacks, dented weapons, sharp hunting knives, a canteen or two, rope, and other random oddities. There was not much, admittedly, but what Mae sought wasn’t exactly of size.
Mae drifted down to her knees, alighting on the packed dirt floor. “Is this everything?” she asked Noa without losing focus on the heap before her.
“Yes,” Noa confirmed.
“I see.” She floated her palm over the pile, mimicking a scanning device. Her hand hovered over the first brown knapsack, travel-worn and rusted at the buckles. Gingerly, she touched it and ran her fingers over the flap. It was secured by a simple button from the top, zippers being an exotic novelty rarely seen anymore. Carefully, she opened the bag and rifled through the contents.
Nothing caught her eye at first. There were three small knives, a few canned rations, a water flask made of animal bladder, and something that looked like –
Mae pulled out a crinkled piece of faded paper and held it up before her face. Dust motes floated lazily across an old illustration made by the hand of a child. Pastel paints depicted two stick figures, one larger than the other, holding hands. The taller one sported short blonde streaks, likely a representation for hair, and the shorter one had longer hair of the same hue. Both were smiling; simple lines curved their two-dimensional mouths upward to their dots-for-eyes.
Sucking in her cheeks until they were hollow, Mae refolded the paper and placed it back into the bag. She continued, patting down the sides and coming up empty save for a small silver key on a thin ring. She could hear Noa shuffle his weight from one foot to the other, indicating he was growing impatient. Utilizing the soft sound to her advantage, she surreptitiously used a sleight of hand technique to slip the dented key into the inner pocket of her short jacket.
Mae hazarded a quick look behind her; Noa was still staring at her back, arms folded, but there was no recognition on his face that anything was amiss.
The next bag proved more interesting. This one, black and made of canvas, contained an array of pistols with silencers. Pushing past those, the brunette located a dark metal container at the bottom of the bag. It turned out to be a lockbox secured by a small gold padlock looped through a latch on the side.
The word MASTER was emblazoned on the front.
Mae ran her thumb over the worn word in the metal, realizing it was a remnant of the world before.
Reinvigorated, she turned the box this way and that, examining the angles. Inside, something rolled back and forth in a reassuring, cylindrical way. Mae pitched her chin inward towards her collarbone and a few errant wisps of hair disconnected from her braid and swept forward, brushing the sides of her face.
Her pupils rapidly dilated behind the curtain of her hair.
Silence.
Without fanfare, Mae returned the box back to the bag and made a small show of picking up other various artifacts in the human-made heap. She stood and turned around when Noa made a small sound.
“Thank you,” she told him quietly, shoving her hands in her pockets. “I’m done.” Her voice, quick and clipped, followed the path of her footsteps as she carried herself outside of the ape-made hut.
Noa’s green eyes tracked her as she swept past him, the lower lids tensing at the edges. Finally, he nodded and removed himself from the structure to follow her out.
“Are you leaving to … follow them?” he called after her.
Mae stopped in mid-step, now well within the village proper. The ape posted outside the door traded curious looks with Noa as both watched the long line of Mae’s rigid back.
“I should,” she told him, voice muffled while she remained turned away, “but if you would allow me to remain a few more days, I can rest before returning.”
This caused the villager standing watch near Noa to silently reveal long canines, but Noa just shook his head at him before approaching Mae.
“I will … speak to the council … about it,” he told her, that stilted way in which he spoke comfortingly familiar. “For now … stay at the edge of the … village.”
“I can do that. I left my horse tied up over there.” Mae pointed off to a stand of trees to the south. “Hopefully, she isn’t too thirsty by now. I need to check on her.” Her expression remained stony and shuttered.
“Something … wrong?” Noa asked, tone too low for the other villagers to catch.
Mae’s head made a small adjustment in his direction. “No, I am just tired. Thank you for letting me look. What do you intend to do with all of it?” She was not settled with the idea of leaving human weaponry with the Eagle Clan. Her body turned halfway, her profile perfectly in view.
“We will … look through it,” Noa stated grimly. “It is ours.” He looked off to the woods, where both could hear the distant whinny of a frustrated equine. The breeze picked up, stirring the fur along his low forehead. “She sounds … hungry.”
“She had plenty of grass around. Water is more important. Do you have any nearby? I saw a lake to the north…”
Noa nodded, finding comfort in the discussion of logistics. Logistics were emotionless, effortless. He rolled his gaze over to hers, holding it. “We have a … pond in the meadow … she can drink from.” He pointed east, where the villagers’ horses were at pasture.
“Better yet.” Mae flashed him a too-tight grin, and then startled when an ape woman in a new blue shawl approached them.
“Noa, a word,” the ape said, her tenor deep and calm.
“Yes, mother.” Noa turned to Mae once more. “I will return later.”
Mae smiled then, a short spread of her lips with a quick nod. “Right.” She spared a second to and gave a once-over of the ape Noa had addressed as “mother”, and the object of her focus did the same. No words were exchanged, save for a small incline of the head on Dar’s part.
Mae spun on her heel and made off for the woods before slipping between the trees. Once the human was out of sight, both mother and son turned back to their conversation.
“Are the echoes gone … from here?” Dar inquired, now that they were passably alone.
She received a firm affirmative in the form of a grunt.
The older ape’s eyes slipped over to the ape standing next to the weapons hut, and then she motioned with her hand for Noa to follow. “Come.”
Noa trailed obediently and without objection. The pair winded their way through a gaggle of giggling ape children watching two older apes practicing fish retrieval with their newly hatched eaglets. Noa thought he spotted Soona’s long stare as she tended to a nest of eagle eggs nearby, but he could not be sure.
Eventually, they ended up at the entrance to one of the two rebuilt sky towers. Dar passed through a beaded partition, beckoning her son inside.
Within the structure a wooden ramp led to higher levels, spiraling well above their heads, but Dar paid it no mind. “Let’s speak of … the echo,” she said firmly, taking a seat on a woven mat near the back of the main floor. She patted to a place next to her, offering Noa a shallow cup of water made from a hollowed oyster shell. “Drink?”
Noa had no issue understanding who she was referring to. His thoughts would not detach from that echo. Dar’s son sighed, and accepted the shell gingerly with two hands, palms up. He took a small sip and set it aside on an overturned basket. Dar gave him a reassuring smile and placed her long forelimbs before her in a pleasant mien. “Tell me what ails you, son?”
“I do not … know what to … do,” Noa admitted, lost.
“About the echo?”
“Yes,” he replied haltingly, expecting immediate censure.
To Noa’s surprise, Dar did none of that.
She signed, “I can imagine.” Her smallest finger glanced off her forehead, shooting up with her left hand. Then, switching to words, she added, “Do you … think she is dangerous to … us?”
“Not right … now,” Noa returned, although he cast his gaze over and down, indicating doubt. “I believe … she feels bad … for flood.”
“This is good,” Dar told him, nodding in apparent acceptance.
“She wants to … stay, rest,” Noa said quickly. “Could you ask … the elders if she can … stay a few … days?”
Dar thought about that for a moment or two. Her warm toffee-colored eyes scanned Noa’s face, seeking a truth he would not voice. At last, she nodded and leaned over to place a hand over the ball of his shoulder. “She saved … Soona, yes?”
Noa nodded, “She put us all … in danger, but she saved … Soona’s life first.”
Dar considered this information, an internal debate roiling about in her head as a distant expression took up residence on her face.
Finally, she gave a short nod. “I will speak to them.”
For that, she was awarded with a small smile. “Thank you, mother.” he signed.
She signed back, “Of course. For now … keep an eye … on her.” The ape matron lifted a gray-brown index finger to one eye, illustrating her words. “Could be … trouble yet.”
Noa blew out a quick exhale before his mouth made a moue of distaste. “I fear this.”
Dar nodded, mollified by her son’s suspicions. It would do him well to have them. She gave his shoulder a good-natured shake before releasing it. “Go, you have much … to do.”
“Thank you, mother,” Noa replied.
Dar nodded. “Before you see her … call on Sun. He may … help.”
“I will.”
“Good.”
They took their leave, Noa standing slowly before exiting the tower. He looked to the south, where he imagined Mae to be, and pondered over her loyalties before calling to his eagle in the way of his clan.
A cry sounded from above, his winged companion never too far away. As the bird alighted on his wrapped forearm, Noa snorted and welcomed the pain of the talons as they dug into his hide. The bird’s watchful, amber eye flicked towards him, head snapping this way and that, wings partially extended and at the ready.
“Sun,” he began, as if there were some secret between them that only they knew, “keep watch over Mae.” The bird, somehow understanding although it was impossible to believe it so, gave his handler a look of avian scorn. Its razored beak parted, clicked shut, and a shrill cry emanated from its trachea.
“Calm,” Noa told the bird, giving his bonded’s back one pat with his long fingers. The bird fluffed its feathers, appearing momentarily larger, and then dropped into a temporary crouch before launching himself from Noa’s arm. The heavy weight of the raptor now released, Noa watched it circle once overhead and wished it could also do the same for the weight on his chest. He rubbed his clavicle with his hand, trying to distill the phantom pain he felt there.
He might have a chance to rectify that when he spoke with her later that night. For now, Sun would keep watch. Noa watched until his eagle disappeared over the tops of the trees, momentarily wishing for the gift of flight.
How easy it would be, to fly away, he mused.

butt?
I had to substitute it for arse, sorry. Exploratory fic I began to explore some character dynamics and what the lifestyle of 4 growing nations and their mother in their last real time together would be like in a slightly Post-Roman Iron Age estate as the Migration period picks up and Germanic peoples cross the North Sea to make a home. I believe of these earlier themes have their origin with @balladofthewhitehorse.
5th Century AD, Cumbria
"Rhys," Alasdair appeared at the fence line, his face gloomy. Rhys had stopped here for his mid-day meal halfway between where the shepherds had herded the sheep in the northernmost glen and their home behind on the hill. It'd been a long two days in the hills. He offered the cider flask to his brother as Alasdair approached, his frown deepening. It wasn't raining, and the day's work wouldn't have been hard. Bad news, then. It was always bad news.
"What is it this time?"
"Rot in the south store."
"Oats, rye or wheat?" Rhys asked. The rye they might go without, but the rain hadn't come so early that anything else should rot.
"Oats,"
"Fuck." Rhys sat on the low wall of flagstones and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Fuck,"
He glanced up. His brother looked even more dour. "Gods, what else?"
"Seven horses," Alasdair said, sitting beside Rhys, boneless and upset.
Rhys gaped at him. "Seven? That's three more than were sick yesterday!"
"It's spreading." Alasdair shrugged helplessly. "I took the healthy ones into the third stables, and it didn't help."
"Is it distemper?"
"I didn't think so," Alasdair said. "They weren't so feverish, and there wasn't pus, but now I don't know.
"So, no horses to sell this year. At least half the oats are gone."
"Rhys." Alasdair's ingot grey gaze fell heavily, and Rhys glanced at his brother.
"I know," He said, and Alasdair didn't look convinced. He looked at his elder brother with a firm look. "I know."
"If we can't pay the tributes…"
He thought of the mustached helmets of the German kings and exhaled. "We don't know that we can't pay. There's plenty to sell."
"It's not just a lack of goods I'm worried about. It's been a bad year for everyone. There might not be anyone to sell to."
"There must be," Rhys said, pulling his cloak tighter over his shoulders. "There will be. We'll figure it out."
"I suppose all we can do is pray," Alasdair said.
Rhys frowned. Alasdair was the one with a mind for numbers, but he always worried, and they always managed before. So what if the horses would not fetch the total price if they were ill come market day? There was still the wool, the fine worked saddles he and Alasdair had made the year before, and plenty of cattle, sheep, honey and mead to sell. There were options. They had options.
"I'll see to the horses; if none of them die, we'll be fine," Alasdair said. "We have ore too. I might get a good price for my boar spears."
"Maybe," Rhys said. His hope was teetering precariously on the assumption that his brother was overly worried.
There was an unspoken sense of doom between them, both praying their worries were unfounded. Rhys grimaced after they parted ways at the outer gate, Alasdair marching off to the stables and Rhys to the poultry yard and the hives. One of the women in his mother's service alerted him to the fact that another of the hives had gone dark with rot. Honey was expensive, and now there wouldn't be enough to sell and use themselves over the long winter. Rhys waved her off with a pinched-off smile.
He stood in the poultry yard for a long moment, leaning against the half gate that kept the hens, quail, and ducks safe in their enclosure and away from the hounds. He watched Arthur tumble after a goose, laughing as it squawked and ducked him. Their dinner pail of scraps and grain was sitting neglected as he played, but Rhys looked on, letting him play. They'd have to keep more honey than what he'd wanted to sell, if only for Arthur's sake. Honey cakes with stored apples and cheese or on bread were one of those precious things that would cheer him when the worst of the winter gloom gripped him worse than any of them. Arthur rolled to a halt, cackling as the goose bobbed angrily and finally noticed him.
"Rhys!" He grinned, leaping to his feet and making a beeline for him. He exhaled a loud "oomph" as Arthur knocked into him, throwing his arms around him. "You're back!"
"I was only gone a night," He laughed. "How is Mother? And where is your cloak? Have you lost it again?"
"The same," Arthur said. "Maybe a little better. She laughed this morning when I fell right on my arse out of bed. Bridgie pushed me."
"Good! And you probably deserved it. You kick in your sleep." He replied, and his smile was genuine. Mother had at least made an effort to shake her recent gloom then. She'd been thinner, paler, and sadder than he'd ever seen her in the last few years, and it hadn't gotten any better as the days became shorter. "And your cloak?"
"I forgot it!"
"You'll catch your death." Rhys ruffled his hair. "Hurry and feed the birds and come in for dinner."

Hi! Random ask: If you were forced to choose only a single passage from all of your works (published or in progress) that best demonstrated your writing and what it’s all about, what would you choose?
Oooh, interesting question. And difficult, because I have written a LOT.
It's really hard to choose a single passage that encompasses everything I want my writing to evoke, but I do like this one about Arthur’s connection to his home/the countryside. I love nature writing and there's a fair amount of it in my work, and not to be too much of a hippy, but I really think humans forget too often how wonderful and amazing nature and our planet is, and I hope that I can occasionally stir up some wonderous feelings in them toward it.
It was between this and descriptions of the dick tree, though. Lmao
Sometimes they had finished up at the same time as the sun, and stood watching it sink whilst they leant on what barn or fence was available, passing back and forth the flask of tea whilst time was erased. The same old revolutions of the planet had brought the same old miraculous non-miracle to the flat-affected fields, and burnt them and Arthur up with feeling. There were the great black monoliths of the clouds, and through the chinks in these towers the little dribs and drabs of light which found and fired the grasses like poppies in season. There were the Dales, made entirely anew; the same country in which he had lived and his mother had died; the same old earth under his young feet, keeping time and the bones of his ancestors. He had forgot sometimes that he loved it; that a country which seems only a miscellany of hills and flattops and cliffs returning ledge by ledge to their Maker can be to a person a kind of person itself; that to go away from it or come back to it can be like the pain of grief or joy. Some humans, carried away by time or migration, have found their way to new homes; but the old one is burning in them still, like a lamp left out for those travellers in darkness; and they will feel, on coming back to it, or coming to it for the first time, the inexplicability of love, the sudden rush and bluntness of it, what is both the storm and the calm of the storm. He loved the Dales like he would have loved a child. He was smiling, to see them coming up like this in the world; to see that they were there, unchanged in the ever-changing century, capable in their great immovability of moving beauty.

Doppelgangers, Homunculi and Other Narrative Possibilities in Walpurgis no Kaiten

The key visual for Walpurgis no Kaiten shows Homura confronting what appears to be a duplicate of herself (or someone wearing her face). Combined with PMMM's predilection for Germanic literature references, this instantly makes me think of the concept of the doppelganger (literally "double-walker"), a term which was coined by the German Romanic author Jean Paul in his 1796 novel Siebenkäs ("Seven Cheeses").
Siebenkas (full title, Flower, Fruit, and Thorn Pieces; or, the Married Life, Death, and Wedding of the Public Defender F. St. Siebenkäs in Reichsmarktflecken, Kuhschnappel). The Wikipedia entry summarizes its plot thusly:
As the title suggests, the story concerns the life of Firmian Stanislaus Siebenkäs and is told in a comedic style. Unhappily married, Siebenkäs goes to consult his friend, Leibgeber (Bodygiver), who, in reality, is his alter ego, or Doppelgänger. Leibgeber convinces Siebenkäs to fake his own death, in order to begin a new life. Siebenkäs takes the advice of his alter ego, and soon meets the beautiful Natalie. The two fall in love; hence, the "wedding after death" noted in the title.
Since then, the doppelganger has migrated further afield, appearing in stories like Edgar Allan Poe's "William Wilson" (1839) and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Double (1846). In addition to being a figure of inexplicable mystery and horror, the doppelganger frequently infiltrates its target's life, taking on their name and place in society by displacing the original. The doppelganger is also similar to many doubles from folklore and legend, including the Celtic fetch, which is usually seen as a omen of death. None of this bodes well for Homura, obviously.
The doppelganger is also closely related to the Gothic Double, where one character's personality is divided across two bodies (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde being the ur-example). In these accounts, the character's shadow--all of the traits that they repress or deny about themselves--manifest physically in the form of a double (often distorted or otherwise visually distinctive) that serves as antagonist and narrative foil in one.
Finally, the doppelganger also serves as the inspiration for the Doppels in Magia Record, which are temporary manifestations of a magical girl's witch form inside the controlled environment of Kamihama City. However, the game takes place in an alternate continuity, so it's not clear what, if anything, will carry over to the movie.
A design similar to Homura's in-game doppel from the 2015 concept movie trailer, featuring the Clara Dolls armed with pins.
While it's not quite the same as a double, there's one other example from German literature that this image reminds me of: the Homunculus from Goethe's Faust, Part II (1832). Homunculi (Latin for "little human") are perhaps best known from shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, but they have been popular in literature for centuries as alchemical creations and artificial life.
In Faust Part II, Faust's assistant Wagner creates the Homunculus--despite greeting Mephistopheles as "cousin", the Homunculus has a unique relationship with Faust, capable of seeing into his dreams. The Homunculus guides Faust and Mephistopheles to the "Classical Walpurgisnacht" featuring the Thessalian witches and other characters from Greek mythology (unlike the more Germanic Walpurgisnacht celebration from the original Part I). In contrast to Faust, who is both matter and spirit and spent most of Part I yearning to be spirit alone, the Homunculus is pure spirit, but yearns to be human. However, he dies in the process as the fire of his being mingles with water and the glass flask containing him shatters on the throne representing Love.
Given all of the Faust references in previous installments--not to mention the association of the Homunculus with fire (remember, "Homura" is a homonym for "flame" and her emblem is a salamander, which was associated with fire in European heraldry) and the shattering of the glass flask mirroring the shattering of a soul gem--it's entirely possible there might be more in Walpurgis no Kaiten. We shall see!
Not every odd or unusual design choice in this show heralds back to Faust, but it's generally a good starting point.
(As an aside, a common term used to describe Wagner is famulus, which has the same Latin origins as the word "familiar". In one of those twists that makes translation so fun, it's also a 100% accurate rendering of the word Sayaka uses in Rebellion to describe her relationship to the Law of Cycles--かばん持ち, kabanmochi, or "private secretary".)
While it's still too early to tell which if any of these archetypes/references will be present in Walpugis no Kaiten, the key visual suggests that the primary conflict of the movie will be Homura confronting herself--though how and why this doubling/splitting/mirroring comes about has yet to be explained. It also suggests that the movie will be as complex, deep, and chock-full of allusions to German literature as its predecessors and I am so here for it.

Senator Kent
Lionel:
Lionel: So...you liked your father?
Jonathan: He was a good man. I...will probably never be like him. But he was a good father. The best I ever could ask for.
Lionel: wow
Lionel: What's THAT like?
Jonathan:
Jonathan:
Jonathan: We're going to need booze aren't we?
Lionel: Yes. *takes out flask.*
Jonathan: Oh that's not good
Four hard drinks in and Jonathan Kent was surprised at how open Lionel Luthor could actually be when he was drunk. He had seen his son inebriated before and he knew he could either be moody with gloom or down right angry from whatever stress or abandonment he was feeling at the time. But the father? He's never seen Lionel Luthor drunk before and it probably would have made the tabloid news if he ever had been publicly intoxicated, so it came as a surprise that the man could actually be likable.
"You are lucky," the businessman slurred just ever so slightly. Jonathan suspected it probably would take a lot more, maybe an entire bottle of Jim Bean, to get him to really slur his speech. "That you had a good father."
The senator side-glanced at the man while they were both sitting at the bar of the Wild Coyote, another first for Jonathan as well. Lex was more likely to share a drink with him at Smallville's only pub than Lionel Luthor was. So to have him here now, sharing a bottle of whiskey between them, had to say a great deal about what was on the billionaire's mind.
"Yours was not," he simply stated. It was well known these days that Lionel Luthor hadn't grown up in a stable or loving household. The murder trial he had gone through had revealed a lot about his childhood, though Jonathan had to wonder how much of it was actually true and how much was a fabrication to make the jury sympathize with the billionaire.
Lionel was quiet and Jonathan could see the man was trying to focus before he spoke, no doubt trying to figure out what he should say that wouldn't turn into a scandal. He lifted the glass and took a long drink of the whiskey, nearly finishing it off. As he reached for the bottle to refill his own glass, he finally continued, "Lachlan Luthor was a Scottish immigrant who came to the United States with Eliza in the hopes of a better life."
He gave a sharp laugh, "New York was not kind to my parents and finding work there was nigh impossible. That's why they migrated to out here. Metropolis had plenty of work even though it wasn't quite that new of a city."
"It was still small compared to places like New York and Gotham," Jonathan concluded and sipped at his drink a little. He was only on his second serving while Lionel was starting his fifth. "I take it the demand for construction workers was high back then?"
"It was," Lionel confirmed and held onto his glass with both hands. He was staring into it and he had to wonder what the man was thinking about. "I remember several of the skyscrapers were in the process of being built during my childhood. The Daily Planet was one of them. My father actually worked on that one."
He took another drink of the whiskey before continuing, "But it didn't pay well and with the trouble my father tended to get in to, he didn't keep those jobs for long."
"Which led to him being abusive?"
Lionel scowled at the question and Jonathan could see the knuckles of his hands paling as he gripped the glass tighter, "It contributed. What made him abusive was his other life."
"Other?"
"He was Intergang."
Jonathan hadn't expected that nor did he expect Lionel to roll up his right sleeve and reveal a faded scar on the underside of his wrist. "You were too?"
"Forced into it, actually," Lionel corrected and he rubbed at his wrist as if it could magically scrub away the remnants of an erased tattoo. "It would have been my life if I hadn't the misfortune of my parents dying. Instead of a business tycoon, I would have been a crime boss."
"I could actually see you as that."
Lionel barked a laugh that drew the attention of a couple nearby patrons. But when nothing else happened or was said they returned to their own drinks and worries. "Morgan thought so too."
"The crime boss who killed your parents?"
The man nodded. "Is it so wrong for wanting an honest life?"
Jonathan was quiet for a moment while he nursed his drink. He couldn't say that Lionel's life was honest, but the man wasn't wrong for wanting to, at least, be on the lawful side. He refrained from commenting, deciding that this conversation wasn't about judging a man for his choices in life.
"So how does being a gang member contribute to your father being a douchebag?" he instead asked and he watched as Lionel thought about it and drank some more. Jonathan was certain that he was going to have to help the man to his limo later at the rate he was drinking.
"Lachlan was a thief and he tried to drag me into that life. I have... skills that you wouldn't associate with business," Lionel confessed and he contemplatively stared into the glass he brought to his lips. "Skills I actually keep up."
"Why?"
"It comes in handy from time to time." He chuckled a little as he remembered something. "I once picked the lock of my own home while a pregnant Lillian waited in the car because I forgot my damn keys."
Jonathan actually found the imagery rather amusing, "Instead of calling for a locksmith?"
"Why waste the money when I can do it myself? Even you have to agree on that." He wasn't wrong. He imagined how much money he would have saved if he had such a skill. Of course he didn't actually call a locksmith, not when he had Clark who could lift the door off its hinges. "Anyway... when it came to my father's criminal life, he needed to make sure I wouldn't rat him out."
"So he controlled your life as much as possible."
Lionel nodded and finished off his fifth glass. "At first it was just to keep me quiet," he explained while refilling his drink. He glared at the bottle when it emptied before calling to the barkeep to bring him another one. "Then it became about anything and everything. I couldn't so much as take a shit without his permission."
The barkeep came over with another Jim Bean bottle and Lionel simply forgoes pouring himself the rest of his drink and drank straight from the bottle instead. Jonathan would have to figure out how to take the alcohol away from him before he passed out or lost his temper.
The clarity of his speech was certainly on its way out the door.
"You can think of it, my father tried it," Lionel revealed with a scowl. "I was broken by the time my parents were murdered. If it wasn't for Morgan, I don't know where I would be today honestly."
"Surly it wasn't that bad?" It was the wrong thing to say because Lionel gave the senator a dark scowl and a curl of his lips in reply. Jonathan held up his hands to placate the man, "What's the worse he did to you?"
"Raped me."
Alright, maybe it was bad.
"I don't want to know how that came about."
"Nothing I did had warranted it. The man was drunk and hadn't any money to go looking for a whore." Lionel pursed his lips. "My mother was passed out from gin and that left my fifteen year old self available. I was scrawny and all limbs, not an ounce of muscle on me to fight back. What could I do but take it?"
Jonathan reached over to take the bottle from Lionel when the man started chugging it. "Alright, you had enough."
He gave a quiet snarl in protest, "Never will be enough to erase what he did to me." Lionel took back the bottle and opted to nurse it instead. "I hated him. I still hate him, but at least I know I got justice even if its not the kind that society would approve of."
"Lionel..."
"Don't."
"You don't even know what I was going to say."
"I don't want your sympathy or pity, Jonathan." Lionel started to stand and wobbled against the bar counter. He held on to steady himself and when he was certain the world had stopped spinning, he grabbed the bottle and started to stagger away.
Jonathan dropped a hundred on the counter to pay for their drinks and started after the businessman. "Lionel," he called after the man and quickly stepped up to his side and grabbed him by the arm. He didn't let go when the man tried to wrestle himself free and when Lionel accepted his grip, began to help him out of the bar. "Look, lets get you back to the manor or the farm so you can sleep the alcohol off and if you're still in an amicable mood, we'll continue talking about our fathers."
"I don't want to talk about mine anymore," Lionel protested quietly and allowed the senator to guide him to the waiting limousine. Jonathan helped him into the car and climbed in after him. "Lets talk about yours. Hiram Kent sounds like the kind of father I would have liked."
"I think, at this point, any father would have been better than Lachlan," the senator pointed out. "Even you."
Lionel scoffed, "I'm no better than him. You know some of the things I've done to Lex."
"Unfortunately."
A silence fell between them at that and Jonathan thought, perhaps, that Lionel had passed out. His eyes were closed and his breathing had slowed, but then after a while he stirred and stared out the tinted window beside. him. "I regret it."
"Regret what?"
"The way I raised my son."
"Why did you raise him that way then?"
"Didn't know any other way, to be honest," Lionel confessed and unscrewed the whiskey bottle again. Jonathan knew he needed to get the alcohol away from him soon. "I knew I didn't want to raise him like I had been raised, but... I didn't know what a father's love was. How do you comfort a crying son? How do you give him advice to help him overcome whatever it is that is troubling him? Every answer I had to those questions was what Lachlan did to me. I tried... god knows I tried my best. But..."
"You gave up?"
Lionel closed his eyes tightly and nodded regretfully, "I decided I would raise an heir instead of a son. It was easier and I knew what I expected of him then. The lessons I learned as a businessman, I would apply to him in some way. Prepare him for that life and if I lost his love along the way, it was a sacrifice I was willing to make to ensure he would survive."
He looked over at Jonathan, "Do not get me wrong. I do love my son, but I... even observing you and how you raised Clark, I cannot wrap my mind around it or figure out a way to apply it to Lex. I just can't. Hugs are uncomfortable, for Christ's sake!"
Jonathan looked at him with pity. "Its not easy loving someone, Lionel."
"I know."
He sounded sad by that admission and Jonathan watched as his demeanor changed with it. Lionel seemed to deflate in his seat and shrink back into it with each passing second. He continued to nurse the whiskey and returned his gaze back to the scenery outside. "I would sacrifice my life for Lex if that was the only option available to me."
"That is love," Jonathan tells him.
"But I am incapable of showing it." He swallowed a mouthful of the drink and then lazily held the bottle between his knees. "I don't know how to love him without Lex interpreting it as some mind game."
"Keep doing it?" the senator suggested. "Talk to him. Father to son."
"That may be something you can do with Clark, but Lex and I..." he shook his head before resting it against the back of the seat and closing his eyes again. "Its too late for that."
"Its never too late, Lionel."
When he didn't get a reply from the man, Jonathan narrowed his eyes as he observed the businessman a little more closely. He saw his breathing had slowed to a point that he realized the man had actually finally passed out. The bottle of whiskey nearly slipping out of his fingers was probably the biggest give away.
Jonathan took the bottle from him and recapped it. He wasn't sure what he should make of their conversation or whether Lionel would remember it come morning. But it certainly gave him a knew understanding into the man.
Lionel Luthor was still a broken man who had tried to love his son once upon a time. He understood now why Martha was so willing to give him the benefit of doubt and work on how to resolve things between him and Lex.
He doubted he could ever fully trust the man, but after this he could at least give the man a chance to prove himself trustworthy.

The journey to mastering full-stack development often begins with choosing the right combination of technologies. For many developers, Python, Vue.js, and PostgreSQL form a powerful and versatile stack. This trio provides a robust backend, a dynamic front end, and a reliable database. Whether you’re a budding developer enrolled in an FSD Python course or a seasoned programmer exploring new frameworks, this guide will provide the foundational steps to set up a full-stack project.
Why Choose Python, Vue.js, and PostgreSQL?
Python: Known for its simplicity and versatility, Python is a favorite for backend development. Frameworks like Flask and Django make it easy to build scalable APIs and web applications.
Vue.js: Vue.js is a progressive JavaScript framework for building user interfaces. Its simplicity, flexibility, and reactive components make it ideal for crafting modern, dynamic frontends.
PostgreSQL: As one of the most advanced open-source relational database systems, PostgreSQL is renowned for its scalability, reliability, and extensive feature set.
Step 1: Plan Your Project Structure
In a standard full-stack project using Python, Vue.js, and PostgreSQL, the project structure is typically organized into several main directories. The backend directory contains the Python-based backend code, which could use frameworks like Django or Flask. The frontend directory holds the Vue.js frontend code and is responsible for the user interface. The database directory includes scripts and configuration files for setting up and managing the PostgreSQL database. The environment directory stores configuration files, such as environment variables and deployment settings. Finally, the docs directory is dedicated to documentation and notes related to the project. This structure ensures clarity and separation of concerns, making the project easier to manage and scale.
Step 2: Set Up the Backend with Python
Choose a Python Framework:
Flask: Lightweight and flexible for simple APIs.
Django: A full-fledged web framework with built-in features for authentication, ORM, and more.
Create the Virtual Environment:
Using virtual environments ensures project dependencies remain isolated, a key concept covered in any Python FSD curriculum.
Install Necessary Packages:
For Flask: Flask, Flask-Cors, and SQLAlchemy.
For Django, use core Django packages and DRF (Django Rest Framework) for API handling.
API Design:
Develop RESTful endpoints to handle CRUD operations.
Implement authentication mechanisms like JWT for user management.
Step 3: Develop the Frontend with Vue.js
Set Up the Vue.js Environment:
Use Vue CLI to scaffold your application. This creates a starter project with essential configurations.
Design Components:
Break down your application into modular components (e.g., header, footer, forms).
Use Vue’s data-binding and state management to handle user interactions.
API Integration:
Axios or Fetch can be used to connect the Vue.js frontend with your Python backend.
Styling:
Choose between frameworks like Vuetify, Tailwind CSS, or Bootstrap to style your application.
Step 4: Configure the PostgreSQL Database
Install PostgreSQL:
Ensure PostgreSQL is installed and running on your system. Tools like pgAdmin simplify database management.
Set Up the Database:
Define your schema and relationships. Django’s ORM or Flask’s SQLAlchemy can streamline this process.
Database Connection:
Configure your backend to connect to PostgreSQL using libraries like psycopg2.
Migrations:
Use migration tools provided by your framework (e.g., Django’s migrate command) to keep your database schema synchronized.
Step 5: Link the Frontend and Backend
Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS):
Enable CORS in your backend to allow API requests from your frontend.
Environment Variables:
Use .env files to securely manage API keys, database credentials, and other sensitive information.
Serve the Frontend:
Deploy your Vue.js application and configure the backend to serve the frontend (or use a separate web server).
Step 6: Deployment
Containerization:
Use Docker to containerize your application for consistent deployment across environments.
Hosting Platforms:
For the backend, consider platforms like Heroku, AWS, or Azure.
For the front end, platforms like Vercel or Netlify are excellent choices.
Database Hosting:
Host PostgreSQL on cloud platforms like AWS RDS or DigitalOcean for better scalability.
Conclusion
Setting up a full-stack project with Python, Vue.js, and PostgreSQL may seem complex initially, but with proper guidance and practice, it becomes a manageable and rewarding process. Whether you’re enrolled in a Python Full Stack Development Course or self-learning, this stack equips you with the tools to build modern, scalable web applications.
Each step in this guide provides a foundation for exploring and implementing advanced features like authentication, real-time updates, or cloud deployment. With persistence and curiosity, you’ll be well on your way to mastering full-stack development.
