haven't read a book in french by a french author in so long it's like i'm rediscovering the language

anyways my friends activated my conlang brain and I've made smth insane as usual
red is influences, blue is Elezen-family languages, green is like a mix bc I see the Alliance cities as having a trade language (that critically is limited to them).
I see Duskwight as a separate language from Black Shroud Elezen (but sharing a lot - easy enough to learn for those speakers). Coerthan and all its derivatives are a whole different language under the Elezen umbrella and isn't mutually intelligible with BSE. Because they split so early, they probably don't share much more than root words and etymologies; within the same family so not difficult to learn for other speakers of Elezen languages, but very distinctly different.
(also I'm not listing them but the branches extend to include other diaspora Elezen languages)

It's their version of liturgical Latin.#Proto-Ishgardian *probably* wasn't using Old Hyur as a prestige language so its influence was probably limited#(it probably wasn't like English with French)#Alliance Trade Standard is a prestige language in Ishgard for nobility but proficiency varies. Probably dialect-dependent.#Duskwight derived theirs from Golmorran and Ishgard from Old/Liturgical Ishgardian bc that's what the Enchiridion is written in.#the friend I'm building this with posits that BSE uses a lot of obtuse speech (verlan basically) for cultural reasons re: elementals.#Ishgardian forms dialects like crazy bc of the geography but there's a lot more interplay and movement of speech around than#you'd think bc of the movement of soldiers from different High Houses and places around the Holy See constantly#High Houses each have their own specific slang and jargon and you can get surprisingly specific placing where in Coerthas someone is from#and what High House he works for based on his accent and what military slang he uses.#the Coerthas-Shroud pidgin/creole refers to the zone between North Shroud and Coerthas where the two languages intersect for trade reasons#and mix together.#BSE mixes with a LOT (padjali / duskwight / coerthan in the north / thanalan languages in the south /#moon mi'qote languages / hyur in general) depending on region and thus has a *really* broad array of variation.#City Ishgardian as a dialect is facing huge change atm bc of the massive influx of Coerthan refugees.#bc of the Calamity and the Horde a lot of local Coerthan dialects went extinct very quickly.

one of my resolutions for this year is to get more serious with learning a language, but committing to just one is so difficult, I love learning languages 😭
#rev rambles#bc like.#rn my focus should be spanish#bc that’s the one I’d use the most (aside from French)#but I also want to keep up with my French (which I’ve taken for 12 years and want to stay proficient in)#…..but then there’s my desire to get better at german#bc my mom and grandma both spoke it#and my NEED to tackle Hungarian bc everyone says it’s impossible and I like a challenge. (also to talk to more family).#but having too many choices is what’s stopping me from actually LEARNING ANYTHING#everything aside from French is a family language so that’s part of why it’s hard to choose one.

it upsets me more than it should that i don’t know every language. More so, that im bad at mentally remembering grammar and spelling which makes learning a language also rough.

One cherished hobby of mine is watching those very 2000s style usamerican science documentaries on youtube. With the very enthusiastic voiceover over and poorly aged cgi sequences and stuff. It's delightful
#i like these usa style TV documentaries fr. theyre so energetic#otherwise ive seen french german and British documentaries mostly bc they dont rlly put subbed docs on youtube#and those are the languages im proficient enough in to be able to understand those types of videos and where theres a lot available#i haven't seen many Netflix produced docus bc the ones ive seen i didnt like#theres something about made for TV docus especially from the 90s to 2000s

#i have no idea how to respond to the whole qsmp situation right now#i mean. i dont watch it or interact with qsmp ITSELF#only the fans around it#I have made fanart for it but not really because i have any particular attachment to specific characters but just because#its a very good springboard for character design and inspiration#Im very involved with the fanbase though as the QSMPnews discord is one of my main discords#and I mainly use the fandom space as a way of practicing/getting into foreign languages#although i dont watch qsmp it still has impacted my life massively in the last year#this clusterfuck of project management is difficult to unravel and know what to do with#and its difficult to know exactly where to turn your attention#or who to blame#since theres so many levels of miscommunication that hasnt been helped by the sharing of it online#i think. even if QSMP doesn't survive#it would be ludicrous to state it as an inherently harmful server#since there has been an evident change in the minecraft gaming space because of it in multiculturalism.#heck IM direct proof of that as someone who does not reguarly engage with the server itself via streams#the fact that as a result of a 21 year old kid deciding to start a sever I can end up with a group of spanish speakers trying to explain#various concepts to me in my language while i respond in theirs is. insane#so do i think that the qsmp will survive?#um. look i dont see how it can.#I've never thought that it could#but i dont think that im going to demonise fans or avoid content relating to it#considering how integral the fanspaces around it are to me and my personal quest for language proficiency#however I will attempt to keep qsmp posts on my french/spanish blogs#well that was. long-winded#idk this is a very self-centred look into the qsmp and this whole situation#obviously I hope that the staff get paid but. Never met anyone who actually knows the name of them! Usually everyone calls them granny candy or little jellies or something
They're some of my favourites, I tend to remember trivial things like that! Plus bon bon = candy in French; all of our packaging comes in English and French, so yeah.

Also I feel like it's ok for me to spend my free time enjoyably so the fact I've tried many of these on my own volition and just didn't want to keep reading is cool with me lmao. 9/10 that's writing style]
Let's see... my assigned reading from this list:
To Kill A Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby (both of these were middle school), Animal Farm (we actually read this twice in Elementary School, once in 2nd grade and once again in 5th. I could actually read it myself in 5th), Lord of the Flies, Moby Dick, Heart of Darkness (all High School). Didn't actually DO the reading but Hamlet was also assigned reading in High School. Le Petit Prince was assigned reading in High School French. Les Mis was assigned reading in college French (didn't finish). Charlotte's Web was read aloud to us in its entirety multiple times in Elementary School, I count that.
Lord of the Rings was optional reading (I chose something else off the list) in Middle School... Catch 22, Catcher in the Rye, and Of Mice and Men were on a similar "choose one thing off the list to read" list in High School -- my choice off that list was the play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" [Please, please imagine young Hergan's surprised Pikachu face to learn this had NOTHING to do with Virginia Woolf. Very formative.]
I was in the class that read "Benito Cerneo" instead of the class that read "Moby Dick," but that could have been assigned to me, I just had a different teacher. Likewise, we read something by James Joyce but I don't think it was Ulysses (and it was fucking awful I do not recommend it. TOO MUCH THINKING).
Like, I'm well above 6 if I just did my homework.

#i don't even think that i took any non-required english classes that had us read. i think my elective english class was a writing class#i mean college french was optional i didn't have to get a french minor#but the system was fucking busted and i had SO MANY credits from high school because testing proficiency gives you credit#BUT so does taking college in the schools french in high school which is HOW I TESTED PROFICIENCY#and so i was like 3 classes away from a minor like who doesn't want to look like they can speak a language out of college?#so a grammar class#a literature class (which was primarily attendance and essay based... if you didn't have an essay assigned on the book...why read it?)#and a study abroad trip later and I was a french minor lmao#anyway les mis didn't have an essay so like... i read a little so i could say a sentence or two in class... but i definitely didnt finish i#sorry no one probably cares about this i am just having fun

I am trying to avoid that
