Sustainable Choices: Organic Baby Clothing from France
I. Introduction
When it comes to dressing our little ones, we want nothing but the best. But what if the best for our babies could also be the best for our planet? Enter the world of sustainable baby clothing, where comfort meets consciousness. In this arena, France has emerged as a beacon of eco-friendly fashion for the tiniest trendsetters. Let's dive into the cozy, organic world of French baby clothing and discover why it's capturing the hearts of parents worldwide.
Tumblr media
A. The importance of sustainable baby clothing
We all know that babies have sensitive skin, but did you know that conventional clothing can expose them to harmful chemicals? That's where sustainable baby clothing comes in. It's not just a trend; it's a movement towards healthier choices for our children and a cleaner environment for their future.
B. France's role in organic baby fashion
France, the land of haute couture, is now leading the charge in haute eco-couture for babies. With its rich textile history and commitment to quality, France is perfectly positioned to revolutionize the baby clothing industry with sustainable practices and materials.
II. Understanding Organic Baby Clothing
A. Definition of organic baby clothing
But what exactly makes baby clothing "organic"? Let's break it down. Organic baby clothing is made from natural fibers grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It's clothing that's kind to baby skin and kind to Mother Earth.
B. Benefits of organic fabrics for babies
Imagine wrapping your little one in a cloud of softness that's free from harsh chemicals. That's the magic of organic fabrics. They're gentle on delicate skin, reducing the risk of irritation and allergies. Plus, they're often more durable, meaning they can withstand the wear and tear of active babies (and frequent washing!).
C. Certifications to look for
When shopping for organic baby clothes, keep an eye out for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Oeko-Tex. These labels are your assurance that what you're buying truly meets organic and safety standards.
III. The French Organic Baby Clothing Market
A. Overview of the industry
The French organic baby clothing market is booming, with more parents seeking out sustainable options for their little ones. It's a market that combines the chic style France is known for with a deep commitment to environmental responsibility.
B. Key players and brands
From small artisanal boutiques to larger eco-conscious brands, France offers a diverse range of organic baby clothing options. Names like Petit Bateau and Bonjour Little are making waves in the sustainable fashion world, offering adorable designs with a green twist.
C. Unique features of French organic baby fashion
What sets French organic baby fashion apart? It's the attention to detail, the quality of craftsmanship, and that je ne sais quoi that only French design can bring. Think classic styles with a modern, eco-friendly twist.
IV. Materials Used in French Organic Baby Clothing
A. Organic cotton
The star of the show in organic baby clothing is undoubtedly organic cotton. Soft, breathable, and grown without harmful pesticides, it's the perfect material for baby's sensitive skin.
B. Bamboo fabric
Bamboo is making a splash in the baby clothing world. It's naturally antimicrobial, moisture-wicking, and oh-so-soft. Plus, it grows quickly without the need for pesticides.
C. Hemp
Hemp might surprise you as a baby clothing material, but it's incredibly durable and becomes softer with each wash. It's also one of the most environmentally friendly crops out there.
D. Wool
For those chilly French winters, organic wool is a go-to. It's naturally temperature-regulating and water-resistant, perfect for keeping babies cozy and dry.
V. Popular Styles in French Organic Baby Fashion
A. Bodysuits and onesies
The foundation of any baby's wardrobe, French organic bodysuits often feature classic designs with a modern, eco-friendly twist.
B. Sleepwear
Sweet dreams are made of these – organic sleepwear that's both adorable and comfortable, ensuring your little one rests easy.
C. Outerwear
From organic cotton jackets to wool-blend coats, French brands are creating outerwear that's as stylish as it is sustainable.
D. Accessories
Don't forget the finishing touches! Organic cotton bibs, bamboo socks, and hemp sun hats complete the eco-chic baby look.
VI. Sustainability Practices in French Baby Clothing Production
A. Eco-friendly manufacturing processes
It's not just about the materials – French organic baby clothing brands are adopting eco-friendly manufacturing processes, from water conservation to renewable energy use.
B. Ethical labor practices
Sustainability isn't just environmental; it's social too. Many French brands prioritize fair labor practices and support local communities.
C. Packaging and shipping considerations
From recycled packaging to carbon-neutral shipping options, French brands are considering the entire lifecycle of their products.
VII. Caring for Organic Baby Clothes
A. Washing and drying tips
Caring for organic baby clothes is a bit different. Use gentle, eco-friendly detergents and opt for line-drying when possible to extend the life of the garments.
B. Stain removal techniques
Babies and stains go hand in hand. Learn natural stain removal techniques to keep those organic clothes looking fresh without harsh chemicals.
C. Extending the life of organic garments
With proper care, organic baby clothes can last through multiple children. Think of them as heirlooms in the making!
VIII. Cost Considerations
A. Price comparison with conventional baby clothing
Yes, organic baby clothes can be pricier upfront. But when you consider their durability and the avoided health and environmental costs, they often come out ahead.
B. Long-term value of organic baby clothes
Think of organic baby clothes as an investment – in your baby's health, in the environment, and in quality garments that can be passed down or resold.
IX. Where to Buy French Organic Baby Clothing
A. Online retailers
The internet has made it easier than ever to access French organic baby clothing. Many brands ship internationally, bringing a touch of Parisian chic to babies worldwide.
B. Specialty boutiques
For a more personal shopping experience, specialty boutiques often carry curated selections of French organic baby brands.
C. Department stores
Even major department stores are getting in on the organic baby trend, often featuring French brands in their eco-friendly sections.
X. Conclusion
In the world of baby fashion, France is proving that style and sustainability can go hand in hand. By choosing organic baby clothing from France, parents are not just dressing their little ones in adorable, high-quality garments – they're making a choice that benefits their baby's health, supports sustainable practices, and contributes to a cleaner planet.
As we look to the future, it's clear that the organic baby clothing movement is more than just a passing trend. It's a fundamental shift towards more conscious consumption, starting with the youngest members of our society. So the next time you're shopping for your little one, why not consider a touch of French organic chic? Your baby – and the planet – will thank you.

I haven’t had any questions lately but love your blog and your insights. In a video of the group photo at Milan fashion week, GG is sitting next to the older man and they are talking. I figure in some videos when GG is talking to others he has translators but it does not look like anyone from his staff is around and I was wondering if they were speaking in English or what other languages he might speak. Love to hear your insights and hope you are doing well.
Tumblr media
Hi coyote! Thanks so much, I'm glad you're enjoying my blog! 😊
The man he's seen talking with a lot is Diego Della Valle, the CEO of Tod's. GG has a fantastic relationship with him, and he even referred to him as yeye (grandpa) in his Vogue interview from the show.
Last time GG was in Milan Della Valle took GG on a tour of some beautiful sites around Italy - including the Colloseum in Rome -and some sites significant to the brand (the workshop, the flagship store, etc.). GG got to spend a lot of time with him, so they had plenty of opportunity to build a strong relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can tell just by his entire demeanour around GG that Della Valle adores GG. Which makes absolute sense given how cute, gracious and charming GG is. When GG arrived at the Tod's show this year Della Valle lit up like a Christmas tree.
They sat together last year at the Tod's show as well (those who missed out on last year's trip can check out my 'gg milan fashion week 2023' tag).
Tumblr media
Anyway, you weren't asking about Della Valle, you were asking about how GG is able to communicate with him. The simple answer is that GG does have some English!
Many students in China learn English in school, although they sometimes don't get as much opportunity to speak it, so it's probably kind of like my French - I understand quite well to hear, read and write it, but my accent and pronunciation are a bit rough around the edges (that's putting it mildly 😅).
With the international travel he's done and all the elbow-rubbing he's had to do with foreign celebrities and brand stakeholders I think GG has had a lot more opportunity than the average person to exercise his language skills, so I've no doubt he's improving all the time.
He's also a huge music lover and has many times been seen singing English songs from Avril Lavigne, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith and many more. A couple of English performances he's done in the past:
youtube
youtube
Starts at 3:22 (I'll never get over hockey player GG 🥲).
It also seems clear that GG has a general interest in languages. He knows a fair bit of Korean and he and DD are seen in The Untamed BTS speaking various languages and dialects, including English. This is also a common feature of LRLG rumors.
There are many clips to be found online of GG speaking English for ads, occasionally a few lines for drama roles, throwing in English phrases into interviews, etc. Just based those alone I think one can tell that he's got pretty good English. His pronunciation is quite good.
If you watch some of the vlogs he's posted from the international events, and some of the clips shared by brands and magazines, you can catch moments of GG having English interactions with many people at those events. One of my absolute favorites is when he's replying to a bodyguard in a vlog when he was in Florence last year (starts at 4:08).
The bodyguard is trying to teach him how to roll his r to pronounce Florence in Italian ('Firenze') and GG says, "I can't do it." The way he says it is so damn cute, I almost died when I heard it.
Anyway, so to answer your question, GG speaks in English with Della Valle and others at those events!

A lot can change in a year.
This time last year, I was a student full of hope for my academic career.
(Wait!! Be you scroll past what you think is a vent post, hear me out! There’s a point to what I’m about to say)
Now, where was I?
Oh, right!
I was full of hope for my academic career! I had a plan in place to earn my diploma, then further my education by pursuing an additional degree in a more specialized field.
Little did I know, the upcoming semester was not going to go the way that I had predicted.
I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but despite having this passion and drive for my field, I was unable to sit down and grind the work out in the fashion that was expected of me.
See, I can create quality work. That wasn’t the problem. I am competent, capable, and I love to learn, everything that should in theory make me a good student…
… but here’s the thing: no matter how hard I try, I cannot for the life of me focus when I’m not interested in something.
The way most university programs function (at least from my experience) is that you are essentially boxed in a room with hundreds of other students and you are expected to sit still for hours, focusing on one person talking at you about whatever information we’re supposed to be taking in.
After all that work it takes to sit still for that long, I’m expected to go home and use what little mental energy I have left to sit still for longer to read supplemental material?? Usually this information isn’t even new!! How are we supposed to —
Ok, ok, let’s not get heated about this.
What is the point of me telling you all of this? It’s not just to complain. It’s to bring something very important to the spotlight:
The traditional university experience is not designed for everyone! Even if you’re passionate about learning, the school system may not be made for people of your learning style.
So, spoiler alert: I failed out of school! But am I going to let it ruin my life? NO!!! Of course not!
I’ve been instead using this failure as a way of bettering myself. I’ve reflected on and analyzed my experience with post secondary to determine how best I learn.
Here’s what I discovered:
- I learn best in an environment where I am free to move around and take breaks
- Engaging in conversations with people helps me focus more than listening to a person talk
- Novelty and short-term goals are essentials in creating a sustainable study plan for myself
THIS INFORMATION IS GOLDEN!! Now I know what to take into account the next time I want to learn something!!!
I don’t know if I’m ever going back to university, but here’s my plan if I do:
To accommodate my hyperactive personality, I am going to opt for asynchronous online courses whenever possible. To make up for the lack of interaction that these types of courses tend to have, I will attempt to get a study buddy/form a study group to discuss each week’s content as it comes.
As for what’s in store for this blog, I’m still a studyblr. In fact, as of late, I’m self-studying French! I’ve picked it up again since I’ve been studying it for about 10 years and it’d be a shame to let such a long time of learning go to waste.
Anyways, that’s all! Thanks for reading!! <3

Do you have pictures of this moonlight dress project?
Ah! sorry! I saw this message a few days ago but I didn't have any pictures or time to pin it back up on my dress form, but here she is now!!
Tumblr media
I am very new to sewing so I am incredibly intimidated by this project!! But it has been so fun to work on
and if anyone is wondering why I chose certain things/styles, I'll put more under the cut so I don't bog anyone's dash down, haha
I’m using a 1910s wedding dress pattern, which has been a fun challenge, as the pattern is partially in French and the instructions basically just amount to “put it together.” And the sizing is for someone a lot smaller than me. Also, I’m altering the pattern to better fit my vision lol
I’ve been seeing a lot of fun analysis on trying to figure out when the book takes place, and I’m not quite sure where I stand on that, but I have been making this dress with the idea that the fashion setting is somewhere between 1909 and 1914. Regardless of whether it’s pre or post WWI, the fashion in Deerwood seems to me (based on some online research, I am not a fashion historian) to be set around that time, with the older members of the family dressing even older and Olive wearing her hair in what sounds like a Chignon style that was popular in the 1910s, “pulled low on her forehead, with puffs above the ears.”
So either fashion in Deerwood is real behind and/or there’s some anachronistic factors (e.g. the cars). Either way, I feel like this pattern is really fun to use because both this pattern and younger Valancy’s imaginings of a future wedding dress prominently feature orange blossoms. And even tho the version I’m creating doesn’t have that, I just think it’s a neat connection.
I shortened the sleeves to have a less Victorian vibe and the skirt is a bit of a different shape and obviously not as long. I’m also using some homemade lace I found at a thrift store instead of the orange blossom trimming so that is a fun touch. Not sure if I'll leave the waist bare or add some more thrifted homemade lace tho
But yeah! I'd love to hear what anyone thinks! I am very new to sewing tho, so apologies if I blind anyone with my bad techniques!

Hi, may you please spare some advice on what casual, but also cool in a hot climate, clothing a baby butch could look into wearing that’s a bit fashionable and isn’t just a shirt and a cargo shorts?
whew first of all donate any & all cargo shorts immediately (pretend tan france is telling you that Urgently). i do understand finding shorts can be kind of weird depending on ur body shape bc men’s shorts are often bulky & long. i prefer a 5’ inseam, but you can go for a 7’ if that feels better. under No circumstances should ur shorts hit ur knees lol. madewell has some pretty good options (if you can find one that’s mens & womens in-store that’s the best). pacsun usually has some pretty chill options. for online shopping, bearbottom shorts is not too expensive & has a lot of colors in both 5’ & 7’ shorts. i really like the swim shorts both& just made (not sure if they’re sold out). get lighter colors in the summer if you want for shorts, & just… no khaki.
& i love a t-shirt, but it’s in how it’s worn. i don’t think it even needs to be an interesting t-shirt, but it should have a fit & pov that looks intentional. i like to get my t-shirts a size up & tuck them in, sometimes pair them with an overshirt. if i know i’m going to be SWEATING & i want to wear a tshirt, i’ll wear something looser & actually thicker cotton in either black or white. i’ve had top surgery so i can wear tanks without stress but if binding is a concern, both& has some great tanks for ppl who bind.
if you do want to be more dressed up than a short/t-shirt combo, the answer is & will always be linen. a short sleeved linen button up (from really anywhere you like that fits well — uniqlo has both men’s & women’s in many earthtones for under $50!) is The Key. put it on as an overshirt over your t-shirt or wear it buttoned halfway in a french tuck. i prefer to stay away from patterns & bright colors bc it can easily look a little zany, but do your thing there. i have a few pairs of linen pants i also love, especially for things like taking my wife on a date, or if it’s just a cool day/nighttime activity etc. literally just… linen button ups & linen pants, even drawstring pants! if you wanna ball out, theory makes my favorite linen pants, but oak + fort is a close second & much more affordable. everlane also has all of these pieces in mens & womens & is very high quality!
idk ur shoe situation but two great options are always birkenstocks (the rubber ones are under $50 & v comfortable) and/or all white low air force 1s. a good all white sneaker is a great starter sneaker & will always go with everything. i myself prefer dunk lows but u gotta rly be wanting to invest in some sneakers to do that lmao but if you are! they’re cool
lastly, small accessories go a long way! i have a few chains, a small hoop earring, a ring (& my wedding ring but lol i don’t think we can count that as an accessory), & then sunglasses i love. i have a Beautiful watch from my wife but literally just a watch w a normal watch face & a leather band is better than nothing or wearing a smart watch out when there’s quite literally no need lol. a good baseball cap, either plain black or from a cool brand (mine for this summer is aime leon dore) is both a nice addition & also practical. do not & i mean Do Not carry around a backpack unless u Absolutely have to lol. masc cross body bags or canvas totes are much better if u need a bag
also:
- you can find tons of overshirts thrifting or at outlets! since they don’t have to fit perfectly it can be a great place to look for them
- i live & die by a good pair of light wash denim in the summer. allsaints & madewell always have beautiful denim, but you can look at levi’s as well, or thrift!
- tailoring is not expensive!!!!!!!!! if u find pants u love that are too long, just get them hemmed! fr it’s like $10, everyone needs a good tailor
- never underestimate a good sweatshort/t-shirt/overshirt/birks moment to go get a cup of coffee or something… 10/10
- i have definitely not been in a place financially to do this in the past, so pls take this w a grain of salt & of course do what’s best for your budget, but higher quality, simple fabrics ethically made are ALWAYS going to be best. they’ll last longer & keep their fit. launder ur clothes carefully too! hang drying pants & heavy cotton will get their lifespan to extend. & it’s 100% cool to find brands u love & stick to them. if u find a piece u like, u can get it in a few colors, rather than trying to find a bunch of other stuff. quality > quantity, capsule wardrobes are easier to wear & maintain
- some ppl whose fashion i like rn: courtney williams, arike ogunbowale, shanice van de sanden. & sue bird knows how to wear a short/button up summer set with the best of them. kristen kish Obviously. (& also i love mal from the queer ultimatum lmfaoooo)
- wear whatever u want, just not cargo shorts :)

Greta Garbo - The Face of the Century
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Greta Garbo (born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden on 18 September 1905) was a Swedish-born actress who built her global appeal on a carefully maintained mystique during her short career. Called "The Face of the Century," she is regarded as one of the Hollywood's greatest beauties.
Garbo was born into a poor family and dropped out of school at 13 to take care of her father. His death deeply affected her and promised to make a life for herself that was void of financial hardship.
Following her father's death, Garbo worked as a salesperson at PUB department store.  After modeling for the store's catalogues, she earned a more lucrative job as a fashion model, which led to a role in her first film in 1922.
She then earned a scholarship at the Royal Dramatic Training Academy, where she met Finnish director Mauritz Stiller, who became her mentor.  Louis B. Mayer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer wanted Stiller in Hollywood. The director agreed to a contract with one condition: Garbo. Reluctantly, Mayer inked her a deal, too.
She made her first MGM film in 1926, and by 1928, had become MGM's highest box-office star with A Woman of Affairs. She followed it up with several more hits, including Camille (1936). Her career slowed down in the 1940s and retired at 35.

The original 'it girl' inspired Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol, and was the toast of the New York art scene with her bouffant blonde hair, vintage chandelier earrings and by wearing nothing but a leotard and tights.

The Designers
London's fashion sector existed until the 1960s in the shadow of the renowned Parisian couturiers. Paris served as the centre of global fashion, specialising in tailored clothing for a fantastically wealthy, elite group of women. But all of a sudden, as the youth market expanded, London started to lead the pace.
Thanks to a handful of up-and-coming young designers trained in the couture tradition, Paris has maintained its edge. Fashion firms like Saint Laurent, Cardin, and Courrèges discovered how to appeal to younger customers. They established ready-to-wear shops and concessions in department stores and produced "space age" clothing that was quickly imitated on the high street.
Tumblr media
The youth market was enormous in the US, and department stores made millions by importing London fashions. But retailers also recognised the boutique's potential. Local stores that catered to affluent customers by selling unique, cutting-edge designs thrived, notably in New York.
Tumblr media
Andrè Courrèges
André Courrèges
The French designer is best known for introducing the revolutionary space look- featuring white boots, goggles and boxy dresses designed in futuristic metallic shades, high shine fabrics such as PVC. His look was a blend of avant-garde geometry with sports classic driven by the youth culture.
Tumblr media
Pierre Cardin
Became famous for his brightly colored mini dresses. At the time his garments were "avant-garde" he like other designers at the time was heavily influenced by “Age" movement. His design style is mainly geometric shapes and colours.
Tumblr media
Paco Rabanne
The Spanish born designer made a name for himself in the 1960s with his space-age inspired fashions. He used materials such as metal, aluminum, plastic, plexi glass and even fiber optics. He was the first fashion designer to use black models in a catwalk show. As a result, he was almost thrown out of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, the governing body of Parisienne fashion.
Tumblr media
Givenchy
Responsible for the iconic little black dress that is essential to every woman's wardrobe and dressing the most elegant ladies of the time such as Audrey Hepburn, U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco; Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor and socialite Babe Paley.
Tumblr media
Yves Saint Laurent
Shift dresses and pea coats became YSL trademark styles. In 1965, colour blocking made its entrance in the world of fashion, when Yves Saint-Laurent introduced the colour block dress, inspired by the works of the famous painter, Piet Mondria.
Tumblr media
Emilio Pucci
Is best known for colorful psychedelic prints, especially for headscarves and dresses. In 1962 the world lost screen siren Marilyn Monroe. It's believed that she was buried in one of his dresses. Monroe was a huge fan of his work which can be clarified by the volume of Pucci garments in her personal collection displayed at Christies in 1999 prior to auction. Although an already established designer, Pucci saw an increase in sales in the sixties which he attributed to Miss Monroe and her popularity.
Tumblr media
The Birth of the Hippie
(1960-70s)
Originally used to designate beatniks who had settled in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, the word hipple is derived from the hipster. The hippies sought for alternate lifestyles. The majority of hippies cherished independence, nature, closeness, peace, generosity, and spirituality.
Tumblr media
Nudity was another expression of freedom that hippies used to set themselves apart from society's norms. They frequently stayed in parks or set up camp in the woods, discarding their belongings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All throughout, people wore tight-fitting bell-bottom jeans, preferably with flower patches and ankle fringe, T-shirts, or just a skimpy halter top. All of the peasant blouses complemented jeans. Anything handcrafted was considered an accessory, and many of them had peace symbols. Popular shirts and dresses had floral prints that stood for peace and love.
In general, people dressed in a way that they believed represented who they were as individuals and not only to follow the rules of fashion. For instance, both sexes wore their hair longer and it had an unruly, uncared-for appearance. This was in response to the mid-60s girl in the miniskirt who had neat, short hair.
Tumblr media
Woodstock 1969
At Woodstock over 250,000 hippies showed up to hear artists like Janis Joplin, The Who, Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers, and County Joe and the Fish. Woodstock was not just a music concert. It was a "profound religious experience."

The controversy of drugs
The most popular music of the time was psychedelic rock. Many of concerts were places for lippies to protest, socialise, dance, or take drugs. Drugs like marijuana and LSD were a big art of the hippy/counterculture movement. Using drugs made hippies feel like the were belling from mainstream society.

Style Tips
How to choose the perfect summer dress
Selecting the perfect summer dress involves considering several factors, including the occasion, fabric, and personal style. For casual outings, opt for lightweight, breathable materials like cotton or linen. For formal events, dresses with intricate details or made from chiffon can add a touch of elegance. Always consider the comfort and fit to ensure the dress allows for ease of movement and keeps you cool.
Accessorizing girls' summer dresses
Accessories can enhance the overall look of a summer dress. For a casual day out, pair the dress with a wide-brimmed hat and sandals. For a more formal occasion, add a statement necklace or a pair of stylish flats. Don't forget about practical accessories like sunglasses and a chic tote bag to complete the summer ensemble.
Mixing and matching for different occasions
Girls' summer dresses can be versatile and easily styled for various occasions. For a beach day, a simple sundress paired with flip-flops and a straw hat is perfect. For a garden party, opt for a floral dress with ballet flats and a lightweight cardigan. By mixing and matching different accessories and layering pieces, you can create multiple outfits from a single dress.
Sustainability in Fashion
Eco-friendly materials for summer dresses
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. Eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled fabrics are excellent choices for summer dresses. These materials are not only environmentally friendly but also offer the comfort and breathability needed for warm weather.

Several French fashion brands are at the forefront of sustainable fashion. Brands like Veja and Stella McCartney are known for their commitment to ethical practices and eco-friendly materials. These brands offer stylish summer dresses that are both fashionable and environmentally conscious, allowing you to make a positive impact with your wardrobe choices.

Additionally, investing in high-quality pieces that last longer can reduce the need for frequent replacements, contributing to a more sustainable wardrobe.
Dress Shopping Guide
Choosing the right size and fit
Finding the right size and fit is crucial for comfort and style. Take accurate measurements of your bust, waist, and hips, and refer to the size chart provided by the online store. If in doubt, consider ordering two sizes and returning the one that doesn't fit. Remember that different brands may have slightly different sizing standards.

Gokinjo Monogatari got an English release. I am just - feeling like I got my wish from 1998.
That's right, I'm alive but not very active on the meta for the time being. 2023 sped up for the second half; work got crazy busy for Q4. I worked up to Dec 18th through several weekends so yeah, needed some recharge time.
I don't know how I missed this, but thanks to watching Coleen's Manga Recs, I discovered that the one shoujo manga title that I had been wanting an English release for has finally arrived. Gokinjo Monogatari by Ai Yazawa!
Tumblr media
I discovered Gokinjo Monogatari in '98. One of the local comic stores had the first three tankobons and I bought them based on the cover artwork alone.
It wasn't until undergrad I was able to meet a few more people and figure out more than just the name and artist. I tried to find the translation of the manga online, but was unsuccessful. I have to remind people that before scanlations, you had to buy a tankobon and hope you found the text based translation which would have the text according to page number and what panel location. I read a fair bit of Kenshin that way, but sadly, this series was not that popular with readers in the States. I've been moving my entire adult life hauling my three precious volumes of the manga hoping that someday I would first, collect volume 4-7 to complete the picture and that I'd have my matching English version. Granted, I haven't done a good job of looking for volumes 4-7 when I've been in Japan . . . or using the internet either.
Tumblr media
As if to spite me, the follow up manga, Paradise Kiss, did get a translation in 2002 from Tokyo Pop which exists in the same universe as Gokinjo Monogatari. Note that a previous manga's characters show up at the Flea Market in Monogatari as well and Yazawa likes to keep a lot of her series tied together. Eventually, the scanlation of the series appeared and I read it around 2011. I'd only found an episode or two of the anime during the golden age of file sharing, but didn't follow through on it. I wanted to read the manga before watching the anime. In 2017, I visited the Manga Museum in Kyoto, got to see a cool display about Ribon magazine and of course they had Gokinjo Monogatari merch! I bought the file folder set and stickers! I bought the Gokinjo Monogatari UT shirt from Uniqlo featuring Ribon series. Yet each time I found more stuff, the universe got the last laugh. Japan released the collectors set with four volumes, there was a French translation, German etc and never one for English. So, you have to realize how I absolutely lost my mind when the thing I'd figured would never happen, happened! Not only was it a thing, I'd even missed the December 2023 release date -at least I didn't have to wait for a pre-order to get volume 1.
I'm happy to see that this version included some of the original color pages!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has a few more at the end with a photo wall of Mikako's outfits. Everything about the style of this manga, I absolutely love. The fashion goes so hard even now. I get nostalgic with all of the mid-90s Japanese street fashion which has a mix of 60s mod and 70s flare. I think the series also does a good job of capturing that awkward time in your teenage life when you are trying to figure out how to act with people you are interested in. But failing to sort things out. Unlike a lot of other high school manga series, this one stands out with the much more "normal" appearance of the students. I remember picking it up and thinking that the characters looked like they could be my peers; though there is no way Mikako's outfits would pass my high school's own liberal dress code where dyed hair and piercings were permitted. Her bare midriff would get her in trouble . . . Funny how now when I look at it, this is a very unusual high school set up for a Japanese reader likely coming from a more regimented school environment with a uniform and strict dress code. I never thought about it at the time. More that I was plotting my own hair dying plans for when I moved out of the house for undergrad just like the characters had - while still in high school. I did read Parakiss back when it came out from 2002-2005; however, it never really resonated with me the same way a series that I couldn't even find a decent translation for. I started to watch Nana but couldn't get into it at all. Maybe it was my mindset or the fact that I wasn't the mood for young twenty-somethings figuring their shit out.
Yet, here I am in the winter of 2024, and I have volume 1 of the collectors edition format of Gokinjo Monogatari and I'm still loving every little bit of the story as I read it. Perhaps, Parakiss and Nana were more edgier/grittier than something like this which is why they never quite clicked with me. I wanted my fashionable shoujo drama but not over the top. I'm not sure what I'll write about it. It isn't a well known series both due to the fact it is from the 90s and that it is shoujo but perhaps I can reflect on what I was drawn to it all those years ago and what I think about it now.

This $43,000 Luxury Meteorite Purse Is Literally Out of This World
By Spooky, 24 March 2023
Tumblr media
French luxury accessory brand Coperni recently unveiled a "limited-edition meteorite handbag" that is hand-carved from a meteorite that fell on Earth thousands of years ago.
It can be yours for just €40,000 ($43,000).
As part of its Fall/Winter 23 fashion collection, Coperni has created a unique handbag that ‘combines archeology, design, as well as classical and primitive art.’
The Mini Meteorite Swipe Bag has the general shape of the brand’s iconic swipe bag, but a rougher finish, which makes sense considering that it’s hand-sculpted out of rock.
And not just any rock, but a real meteorite, hence the name.
The bag showcased on the Coperni online store supposedly contains a piece of meteorite estimated to have fallen on Earth 55,000 years ago, but because each purse is unique, the shape and color may vary slightly.
Tumblr media
The Coperni Meteorite bag measures 9 x 12 x 23 centimeters, but you’re probably more concerned about the weight.
It’s supposed to be around two (2) kilograms, quite heavy for an empty bag, so you’ll need a bit of strength if you actually plan on carrying it around.
The French fashion house also stated that each meteorite will be individually sourced per each order and can come from various locations, depending on where the meteorite fell on earth.
Because of the bespoke nature of this unusual handbag, each purchase is non-refundable.
Some sources claim that depending on the size and quality of the meteorite incorporated in the stone purse, the price can be higher than 40,000 euros, but we have found no such information on the Coperni online store.
In case you’re considering getting one, each Coperni Mini Meteorite Swipe Bag has an expected delivery time of about 6 weeks.

essories naturally evolved to fulfill necessities, while others were introduced to represent social status and wealth. Early accessories — when humans were dancing around a fire dressed in leaves and animal skin — were made of bones, seeds, feathers, shells, and stones. Crowns, amulets, or badges often depicted the status of the individual in the tribe or town.
Necessity carved the other sets of accessories, such as bags and footwear. Glasses, shades, and watches (often replaced with Fitbit these days) were introduced to the list with newer inventions.
In the last few centuries, it has been observed that wars and economic depressions have impacted fashion more than any major brand or designer. For instance, in the Victorian era, gloves, fans, and extravagant hats were integral to women’s wear, while after the Great Depression, the style became subtle and minimalist with long socks and simple hats.
Accessories are capable of changing the mood of a get-up. Social media is filled with tutorials to style the same dress for different occasions by just changing the accompanying accessories — just changing how a scarf is worn or adding a belt can change the whole vibe of the look.

What went wrong with Depop
I remember the first items I bought on Depop. It was back in 2017, actually before I had developed an interest in sustainability. I had just dropped out of university and was working part-time at a local pub. It wasn’t a great time in my life to say the least.
It became a bit of an outlet. For a shopaholic like me, branded items being sold for a fraction of their original price was a no-brainer, and was pivotal in getting me over my aversion to second-hand clothing.
I would see items in shops and think to myself “I’ll just wait six months and buy it for cheap on Depop”. It’s how I got my Topshop Hurricane snake print boots. It saved my hide when I bought some ASOS shoes in the wrong size and then they ran out of the right size, only to stumble across them later on the app.
I didn’t just use it to purchase high street items; Depop was the first time I dipped my toes into the waters of vintage clothing and I found some real bargains on there (although the stench of stale cigarette smoke on the floral maxi skirt I ordered still remains in my nostrils to this day). I found a genuine leather white mini skirt and a Burberry trench (although perhaps that should be third-hand as the seller had purchased it from a vintage clothing store).
I personally never sold on Depop, as I found it was only really the sellers who committed to selling their items (and usually keeping a steady flow of new stock) or those whose items adhered to a tightly curated aesthetic. The layout of Depop is very similar to that of Instagram, and having items in the same style, colour or brand is pleasing to the eye and increases the likelihood of shoppers following the seller (and thus receiving notifications of new items to sell). This approach was much more successful than the sellers with eclectic mix that honestly represented the cast-offs of their wardrobe. Many of the items I bought were a casual seller’s first ever sale, despite usually having around a dozen on offer.
This was not a problem in the beginning- at least not from a shopper’s perspective anyway. But it was a sign of troubles to come.
Those who realised there was money to be made by reselling second-hand items sourced from charity shops (not an inherently wrong thing in my opinion, but a somewhat controversial in sustainability circles online due to the allegation that this denies low-cost clothing to those in a local community who most need it) went into overdrive, hiking up their prices.
The magic word was ‘y2k’, a banner under which anything could be sold for £20 and above, creeping close to the original RRP or sometimes surpassing it!
The app became increasingly challenging to navigate. For maximum visibility sellers would list just a blurb of tags regardless of whether they were relevant; a Topshop skirt manufactured and sold in 2013 could simultaneously be tagged ’90s’ and ’00s’ when the skirt itself frankly bore no resemblance to the clothing of either decade. Brand names would just be used for the sake of increasing their chances of appearing in search results. The rise of even faster fashion brands in the late 2010s became increasingly omnipresent, lowering the overall quality of the items on sale.
So when Vinted launched in the UK, I immediately signed up. At the initial stage the app was pretty glitchy; it would only show a few dozen items and then was unable to download more and at one point was entirely in French. But it soon came to find its footing and since then has firmly established itself amongst young people in the UK. I erroneously assumed that Vinted was a relatively new company, but actually it was founded in Lithuania in 2008 and has since expanded into over a dozen other countries.
It would be fantasy to pretend that Vinted is a shining city on the hill- Shein and its ilk are arguably just as prevalent as they are on Depop (with the small caveat that sellers aren’t charging nearly as much) but its search engine and filters are much better than Depop’s. The layout of the website and the range of items sold bear more resemblance to the early days of eBay (before it became an Amazon copycat dominated by mass-produced new items sold by large companies). I also suspect it will follow a similar trajectory to Depop, starting out as a cheap, sustainable and user-friendly platform that is ultimately undone by its popularity, with sellers asking for unreasonable items for low-quality products leading to a migration to whatever new reselling platform senses an opportunity. But for now, I enjoy Vinted as much as I once did Depop (and perhaps more than is good for my bank account).
