GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. The little dude with the paintbrush in its mouth is supposed to be a gnu. It's not a GOOD depiction, the one used for the GNU software family is much better, but that's the stated intent. The program itself gotten significantly better since I started using it, like its big brother Blender. This is one of the cool things about open source software, and also you can install multiple versions if a feature you like gets removed.

They are also free, which is important now that every industry standard 2D/3D graphics program is owned by Maxon or Autodesk, who have moved them all to incredibly predatory subscription models and no longer let you buy them outright. Seriously, fuck these guys. If I ever win the lottery, Blender Foundation is getting ten million dollars and a polite request to for heaven's sake make it so sims can run on the GPU.

Anyway, that's our Old Artist Yells At Clouds moment for today.

GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix. This is the kind of joke that programmers thought was funny back then. They probably still do now, but I have no point of reference currently, as I am scared to piss off any of the coders I know from work by asking if they like stupid recursive humor.

i fucking hate autodesk

thank ton we have blender which surpassed 3ds max a long time ago in every way other than being “the industry standard”

but blender is a product of a crazy person who created a team of even crazier persons

unfortunately we don’t have this situation with CAD software

like we have freecad but it sucked three years ago and it still sucks now, even simple tasks are painful to do

and fusion 360 is a good product which has a free version but for the last several years autodesk were like “oopsie, you don’t have simulations anymore”, “teehee you need to pay from $500 a year to use generative design now”

and the worst part is i can’t even pirate this shit because it’s cloud based (ew why do you need cloud for that)

i guess i will move to solidworks but i genuinely liked fusion, but i don’t use it enough to pay for it and i won’t give my money to autodesk anyway

their whole business model is too but the competition and burn the product to the ground

softimage was actually good and unique and autodesk killed it just because

i wish hell was real

i try to cut of thoughts along the line of "its not fair my life is like this, i was robbed of a good life" because something something acting like being able bodied is the expected and deserved norm [and how it can dangerously bleeds over into other thoughts about privilege] not to mention that theres no time travel i gotta deal with it but like. Damn. I was set up for a good career in an industry i enjoyed and it turned to dust. Sure i wouldn't be half the artist i am now but i would have a job and a career path as stable as anyone my age can and i would probably be able to move out and live with my friends- both financially and in terms of being able to live independently from my carer. I'm glad my friends didnt study engineering with me because at least they arent working the job i would have been if things turned out differently, because after what 14 years of knowing each other and all the teen bullshit i dont think i could have stood it.
