Lasso peptides get their name from the way the N-terminus wraps back around the peptide chain and forms an isopeptide bond with the carbonyl of a Glu/Asp residue, forming a literal lasso like shape:

This is a deceptively tricky reaction to study, let alone replicate. At the minute, most studies done on identifying and isolating these molecules use overexpression, chemical or even biosynthetic strategies are inaccessible, which is a real shame because the unusual topologies of these peptides gives them excellent protease resistance and much better pharmacokinetics than linear, or even standard cyclic peptides.

There is no wiggle room at all, and that is key to understanding why these things are so hard to make, they incur a huge entropic and steric penalties for being in these tightly wound conformations and aren’t offsetting that by forming covalent bonds or massive protein scale stabilising interactions. As such I think they’re pretty remarkable and definitely worth studying more.

Family #1: Actinopodidae

Actinopodidae is a family of mygalomorph spiders, meaning they are a "primitive" group, sharing many physical traits of the oldest, most ancestral spiders. They are commonly known as mouse spiders, and can be located in both Australia and South America.

A fun fact about actinopodids is that some exhibit a behavior known as ballooning - in which the young spiderlings throw out a line of silk from their spinnerets and let it carry them into the air as a dispersal method. This is unusual to see in a mygalomorph, because they are generally more stout-bodied and heavy than their araneomorph counterparts (more on mygalomorphs vs araneomorphs in a future post!).

Actinopodids are not considered dangerous spiders. A 2004 study on the effects of their bite reported that while it is certainly quite painful, the very worst systemic affects appear to be headaches and possible nausea. If you were to ask my opinion, I suspect the large fangs, rather than the venom, are what causes the majority of the pain!

2023 WNBA draft fallers

1. Ashley Owusu (G)- Virginia Tech

Owusu started the season in the starting lineup, but in December she was out for several weeks with a pinky injury. Since then she hasn't been able to work her way back into the rotation and play consistent minutes. She was a healthy DNP in the ACC tournament. This is certainly not what she had envisioned when she transferred from Maryland, where she won the Ann Myers-Drysdale award her sophomore season. She has also said she is not going to use her extra year of eligibility, and will be going pro.

2. Aijha Blackwell (F)- Baylor

Blackwell was Missouri's leading scorer and rebounder last season when she decided to transfer to Baylor. However, she has only played in 8 games this season due to a leg injury. She has an extra year of eligibility, but it is unknown whether she is going to use it.

3. Haley Jones (F)- Stanford

So hear me out... at the end of last season Jones was considered by most the #2 overall pick behind Aliyah Boston. I think most people would have expected to see a bigger jump in Jones's stats. This season she is averaging 13.4 ppg 9.1 rpg 4.1 apg 1.0 bpg. Compare that to last season: 13.2 ppg 7.9 rpg 3.7 asp 1.1 bpg. Add to this the fact that she is shooting 9.7% from 3PT this season! That's not something WNBA teams like to see from a wing player. As a #2 pick teams are looking for someone to make an immediate impact. However, I do believe Jones has a lot of qualities and talents that don't show up in the stat sheet. She is a good decision maker and can step up when her team needs her to score. A good thing for Jones is she has been relatively injury free in her collegiate career, outside of her freshman season, and that can't be said for who many think will be the #2 pick: Diamond Miller
