I’m sure you’ve all heard this piece of writing advice: diversify your vocabulary

But what does that actually mean? It’s not grabbing a fucking thesaurus or looking up verb lists and swapping words out at random!

You need to consider the effect you want, the impact of the word choice, and each word’s connotation! Consider, for example: murmur, mutter, and mumble.

They each vaguely mean to speak quietly, but they have entirely different connotations!If you are saying something gentle and affection, you might use murmur. If you are shittalking someone under your breath, you would use mutter. If you are lacking confidence and aren’t speaking clearly, you would use mumble.

Word choice is all about context and purpose and it is vital to understand the connotations of the words you use!
