Tuesday, January 16th, 2024. This mango, dragonfruit, tangerine, and watermelon fruit salad felt like eating a bowl of sunshine! I heard this song earlier for the first time and loved it, it felt like it had the same uplifting and energizing sunshine vibe as the fruit salad did. Fruit salad with chia, flax, and hemp seeds is my favourite summer breakfast. Yes, it’s the middle of the fucking winter and this was my dinner, I did write January at the top of this paragraph, not June or July, but as a Leo, summer is my favourite time of year and yeah I fucking miss it?! I was so damn lucky this summer and got to enjoy so much fresh fruit that was both high quality and low cost thanks to a local shop that seemed to have taken an “anti-price gouging” approach as a response to many larger western chain stores significantly increasing the cost of groceries. I am always shocked with how low the prices are and how the produce is still great quality. So damn grateful for the non-western grocery shops that seem to have taken this opposite approach. I got the fruit at t+t and it seems like their produce selection is huge and only speciality items are higher priced? Idk why but my grocery bill is always like $37 every single time there- I guess that’s what fills up my reusable bag I usually bring. I really like trying different random exotic fruits from the Chinatown grocery shops. I’ve always loved trying new food and I’m forever grateful for K and his family for introducing me to so many different types of delicious Asian food when I first moved to the city.
This year I’m trying to learn more about the history of the land that I live on, which is the general area of Strathcona, Chinatown, DTES, Gastown, and Railtown. Last year I was fascinated with looking at old maps of what this area used to look like before settlers arrived, and throughout the last hundred years as everything changed. Last fall I was learning about the Indigenous names for the areas that I live, work and play and learning about how the local area where traditional medicines were harvested was turned into a city dump, then later restored and turned into organic community gardens. I’m gonna have to save that topic for a longer blog post cuz it’s super fascinating and I feel like I’m still just barely even scratching the surface. My current hyperfixation and special interest: learning about Chinatown, the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, Chinese astrology, the Tong Shing, Feng Shui, and face reading. Did you know that Pender street used to be called DuPont Street and was one of the first red light districts in Canada? I think I just might have spent a past life working in the brothels there and frequenting the Opium dens, I know I’ve came back to this land to reincarnate in many past lives. yesterday, after writing that blog post and applying sunscreen (like I said I would), I went out for a walk in Chinatown down Pender street. I looked around Bamboo Village near Pender and Main and looked at the super vast selection of plants, decorations, and their whole wall of vintage and antique items from China. It’s easy to lose track of time here because there is just so much to look at. The antiques are fascinating! It’s like a jungle of plants growing in humid warm air, a history museum and a store all in one. I spent $4 on a pretty pink bowl and left to continue walking west on Pender. I was thinking I kinda wanted to go sit in Dr Sun Yat Sen Gardens and chill for a bit, but when I got there, a film crew had rented out the gardens for filming some dramatic scene so I decided to come back another day and go get some lunch and groceries instead. I had walked past so many cool little shops on Pender, and so many of them that I had never even been inside or explored what they had to offer. Or if I had, it had been a long time since. Honestly I feel it’s about damn time that I open my eyes and start viewing the world in a fresh way instead of just feeling like I have no time to look around and be curious instead of hyper focused on getting shit done and making money. I have all the time in the world now that I’m not doomscrolling anymore. I grabbed some groceries and got on the bus going home. The sky was this absolutely beautiful pink/purple/blue sunset and I got off a stop early because I wanted to witness it’s beauty all around me instead of just through the window. I thought to myself- THIS is why I’m so damn glad I left the house today and didn’t waste the day in bed staring at my phone aimlessly.
Today was a chill day as it’s the day before welfare and typically I’ll usually take this week off to focus on catching up on rest and housework. I spent a couple hours learning online, made some fruit salad, and chatted with some friends. I’m feeling so much better mentally and physically already! I feel happy and excited about life most of the time instead of sad, now. I feel like I want to get better at writing in more of an organized way? I feel like I’m jumping from topic to topic randomly and not sure how it all flows but I’m sure I’ll figure it out as I go along with more practice writing. I’ll probably end up writing and publishing a memoir at some point in my life and this is just practice.

“I Fought The Law!” GH Live! #NewMusic DEMO #Acoustic #CountryMusic #Com...
PUBLISH GRIFFINHEART NOVEMBER 2021 “I Fought The Law!” And I WON!!! Eventually! I grew & supplied my neck of the woods with MEDICINAL Marijuana AKA Cannabis, for 15 Years until a mentally ill ex-wife who had already reaped the benefits of my medicinal dispensary created an elaborate inside job STING forcing at this point a totally uninterested Government & their Systems such as: Healthcare, Social Services, Child Services, RCMP, Courts Etc. to actually, against their own will, take me down! Some of the People involved in the bust, RCMP, Social Workers included, actually were customers of my Distribution Outlets! This essentially ruined my life via the loss of my home, income & all support systems impoverishing my ex-wife’s children & family generally! Among many other Law Fighting Battles I also, as a Child Revolutionary, took part in the now famous Pro Marijuana Gastown Riots when the Mounted Pigs charged us on Horseback & ran us down like vermine!!! But, Cannabis is NOW LEGAL IN CANADA & “I” discovered the Impetus of Human Motivation which changes the whole paradigm of the critical thinking of mankind, Philosophy, Psychotherapy & Behavioral Science & Science generally! Plus I created the timeless “3 Chords & The Truth!” & “The Evolution Connection!” for motivational healing & a happy life to herald, distribute & publish this groundbreaking, cutting edge information to our species! Now Cannabis, very likely the most Medicinal substance on earth for HUMANS, is no longer illegal in Canada & held underground by the CRIMINAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM you are getting your JABS from! Jabs which are, in all reality, still in their Trials & BETA period!!! If you are a parent, before you turn your child into a GUINEA PIG please consider your healthy 5-12 year old has NO RISK from ill effects of Covid 19 & if they get it they have the best VACCINE of all from MOTHER NATURE! If you jab them you create RISK where there was none! THAT IS ON YOUR HEAD!!! THINK ABOUT IT HARD BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT BE ABSOLVED!!! This Summer months of June July and August. We are having an Exhibition series geared toward Black and Indigenous creatives who practice spiritual medicine.
The Exhibition series will take place in a window space known as the Cheeky Proletariat 320 Carrall st. (The Cheeky Proletariat website is down right now, instead I will give you a brief rundown of its history). The space is Black owned by Anthonia Agundele, who also runs Ethos Lab. Since the alternative space has been open, it has become energetically charged with the centering of art around revolution and Black empowerment. Nya Lewis Williams who ran the space in the past for Anthonia, left behind a huge legacy known as Black Art Gastown . As Black Arts Vancouver, we are now running the space in partnership with the Cheeky, looking to continue that legacy. Black Arts Vancouver's mission in centering Black, Brown and Indigenous Artists and youth in and around Vancouver, we want to utilize the space for artists and creatives alike who have been at the forefront of this revolution. This comes in many forms and ultimately is Spiritual Healing. Even though our communities are far from being healed and we may not see it in our lifetime, this notion does not stop us from doing our work.

so i've basically just felt like collecting the stories about all of my shoes that i keep in my mind, in my blog instead. i think of my shoe collection on kind of the same level i think about my book collection: something full of stories, experiences, emotions, and beauty.
i know for a lot of people shoes are simply practical, they get you to from point a to b without stepping on a rock. i know people who only have two pairs of shoes. if you like this, i'm probably going to do more of these so stay tuned, if you don't that's okay this obviously feeds a very particular kind of interest.
full disclosure: while i own some fairly expensive or difficult to acquire brands of shoes, i'm not doing this to show off my "wealth" or lack of. nearly all were bought on sale or passed down to me. i am a generally savvy sale shopper with a lot more luck than $$$
So this shoe story:
This shoe stories begins with the tale of another pair of shoes. I had a pair of black oxfords (i believe from nine west - perhaps spring? - but definitely no more than $20), with about half an inch of a heel that I had from 2013-2015. I loved those shoes. I wore them nearly everywhere from spring to fall (and through a single vancouver winter) two years in a row. if you know anything about nine west or spring shoes you are already seeing the problem.
by the beginning of summer 2015 they were utterly destroyed. but i loved them so much. they were so worn and flexible they were practically jazz shoes, a favourite for rehearsals that weren't character shoes.
but alas it had to end. my mother, tired of seeing her daughter wander around with holes in the soles of her dirty, smelling, half destroyed shoes, made me throw them out. however this was not terribly cruel. she did not rip them from my hands as i wept, it was a reluctant but understanding goodbye. you can wear your shoes until your toes are poking out the ends but you will at some point have to let them go.
she did promise me one thing though, and that is that she would replace them. which is a fair promise if you throw out your teenage/near adult daughters favourite pair of shoes. so after a long drawn out search that always reached the conclusion of not quite right, these shoes finally came into my life.
while visiting vancouver in the fall of 2015, my family went shopping through gastown and found this John Fluevog workshop and fell in love with so many pairs of shoes there. i believe my mother bought both herself and my shoes from there, although i cannot remember what she bought for sure. she justified the shoes for me because they replaced the ones she had thrown out (and i would stop whining about it.) these are probably the most expensive shoes (money paid wise not original price) that i own at $235ish. but my mother paid so counts as free in my bank account
now these are obviously not black supple oxfords, but they are so gorgeous in their own particular way. first of all they are so beautifully made, the leather is so beautiful. i thought about cleaning them to show off their truest, cleanest beauty, but i think that defeats the point of showing off how i love my shoes. the soles aren't plastic, but rubber. and damn, do i have a thing for designs in the grips of a shoe, it's such a wonderfully understated way of doing something so unique to show off the craftsmanship in the shoe.
this is where the story goes downhill. i don't pack a lot on vacations that i intend to shop on because how else am i suppose to get it all back? (my mother and i do have a bit of a bad track record for shipping special books found at local booksellers back home in order to avoid going over the weight limit) so of course i'm going to wear what i've bought. so the next day i wore these new beautiful pair of shoes all. day. long. that day we happened to be going to the vancouver aquarium, which is in the middle of a park. so i walked down the street from our hotel to catch a bus, walked through a park, walked through the aquarium, and all of that in reverse back. those who know about stiff leather shoes already know the problem.
to be completely honest, the aftermath probably wouldn't have been quite so bad had i not have worn socks with broken elastic around the ankle. the long and the short of it is that i got two very big blisters on the insides of both my feet around my heel. i didn’t want to draw attention to my idiotic mistake so i just ran out to buy bandaids the next morning and wore my doc martins very loose for the next few days.
things in general were pretty as normal for a few days after returning from my trip. i put bandaids on the holes in my feet and kind of forgot about them. they were still uncomfortable, and now i couldn’t wear my fancy new solemates (shoes - soles - get it?), but i just kind of left them? which was a terrible mistake
the long and the short of it is one of those giant holes in my feet got a staph infection. i figured this out when one day it hurt way too much to put shoes on or even touch and later that night i took off the bandaid to see a kind of puss/blood swollen mess about half an inch protruding from my foot. it looked like the inside of a muscle. it haunts me to this day. so i went to emergency because at this point i can barely walk and it’s like 10pm. I wait until like 2am to see a doctor and get a prescription for an antibiotic cause ya it’s probably a staph infection because staph lives on our body all the time and i just gave them such an opportunity to slide in my wounds.
complete side bar but - Radiolab did a super interesting show about this viking cure for staph which weirdly aired at the same moment i was suffering with this staph infection so i will never forget it http://www.radiolab.org/story/best-medicine/
now this obviously causes general disruption in my life: including but not limited almost getting fired from my job because no one will take my shifts even though i can’t walk, rescheduling a shitty group project presentation, and not being able to wear shoes for three days. cool right?
now you are probably thinking this is a pretty long and kind of wild story about a pair of shoes, right? are you glad it’s over now? well wait a minute. i’m not done. things happen in three don’t you know?
i turn out to be allergic to the antibiotic that they gave me, i get some really cool, itchy rashes on my hands and am told to stop taking them immediately and then just pray that the staph infection gets better or get an iv antibiotic. now as a good theatre kid i knew things come in three’s and thought the third thing was definitely going to be me having to get hooked up to an iv for two weeks.
it was not that, it instead was my dad having a (mini) stroke (there is a word for it i forget, but it is all good and fine and he is alive and well) so it was a pretty generally terrible time of life, that all began with the suffering these beautiful devil shoes rendered unto me
and to be completely honest it took me a long time to get over it and wear them again. in my defence it was winter and i live in a very snowy winter city so i couldn’t have worn them until spring anyway. over the last year and a half i’ve been wearing them a little at a time, wearing them in, molding them to my feet. soon they’ll be perfect. they’ll give me no more trouble. the picture above with the girl with the pearl earring socks is from last week.
life goes on, shoes get easier to wear, holes in your feet heal with no scarring, your father gets better, you can now list the antibiotics you can no longer take, and you learn what it means to suffer. and that’s just life
#shoe stories#this one is a bit of a shoe oddessey tbh#most of my shoes don't have this much character#background to them#also this story gets a little grotesque tbh#so#fair warning#this bad boy clocked in at 1500 words holy shit y'all know i have a 2000 word essay due on friday DAMN hope#anyway if you see a spelling error let me know i am dyslexic and it is hard for me to see the errors or the difference between words

1. Tag: Alice Lake, kurz vor Whistler - Wohnwagenübergabe - Stopp in Squamish - Besichtigung der Shannon Falls - Sea to Sky Highway - schöner, am Fluss gelegener Campingplatz 2.
