Today marks 21 years since the CN City era and exactly 1 year since I started making CN CIty art. So, to celebrate both occasions and to sort of conclude this chapter of my art, I've created my largest piece to date!
Come! It's a party downtown, and you're invited! "This is Cartoon Network."
I want to thank everyone who's seen my art and interacted with it, liked it, shared it, etc. for the past year. It all means a lot to me! 🖤🤍 I might not be posting as much CN City from now on, but I will continue to post general Cartoon Network art indefinitely, some of which will be part of new projects. As always, here's the full renders of all 36 characters in this piece. No points for guessing why I stopped on this particular number, lol.
But wait, there's more!
I decided to make a list of all the CN characters to illustrate just how many of them I've drawn for the past year. This encompasses all the CN City art, the CN City adjacent art, like the Villains Bar, etc., all FusionLore thumbnails I've done so far and the last triple art style challenge piece, because all 3 of its characters didn't appear in any of the other drawings.
This all comes to a grand total of 48 CN cartoons + FusionFall + (not shown) 8 Disney and 10 Nick shows represented, among which there's 213 different characters that made an appearance (counting the Ben 10 variants of characters + Ben's aliens separately).

I love good characters. Like GOOD good characters. not "the good guys" in a generic sense. not "perfect" or "pure" necessarily (though there can be overlap). GOOD characters. characters who help others because that is what they want to do. Characters who see a wrong and want to right it. people who see someone hurt and want to heal them. characters who hold justice and mercy in their hearts and want to spread it. Not because they have some grand reason, but because they have the ability to help and there is someone who needs them.

After Ben turns into Upgrade and merges with Rex, there are some unexpected consequences that leaves Ben trapped in Rex's universe.
Words: 4,109 || Chapters: 1/4
Read on AO3 or under the cut!
“What happens when the best you can do just isn’t enough?” Rex laments.
Ben’s expression has a moment of brief surprise before he states with confidence, “You get an upgrade.” His brows are set and a self-assured smile on his face. Rex falters at Ben’s statement. Huh? Doesn’t this guy understand the stakes right now? There’s no time for an upgrade!
“Weren’t you listening? Alpha has the Omega!” Rex stammers.
“I’m not talking about a nanite!” Ben clarifies before slapping the top of his alien watch. Standing before Rex is an amorphous creature that was black from the shoulders up and an olive green from the chest down with glowing circuit board-like patterns across its whole body. Ben approaches Rex and before the EVO can even get out a “Hey! What are you-“ Ben, as this, alien dives straight into Rex’s chest and disappears. The sensation was otherworldly and it makes Rex’s nanites thrum in a way that is way different than he was used to. It feels weird and…alien. Rex says as much out loud, not even knowing if Ben could hear him. Then, the same sort of appearance the alien had covers his body like a scuba suit and the symbol for Ben’s watch appears on his chest. Rex looks his body over in confusion.
“What’s…supposed to happen now?” Rex asks the open air. Suddenly, the head of the alien grows out of his bicep and Rex is really feeling like he’s had enough alien stuff for one day. “Don’t do that, you’re freaking me out!” Rex yelps.
“Build something,” Ben outright commands in a voice that sounds like the speaker at a drive-thru. Huh? Rex activates his nanites and instead of the usual blue glow across his body, it’s green like Ben’s alien watch and the patterns covering his body. Rex opts for a Smack Hand and can feel the rush of something enhancing his nanites. He quickly realizes it’s Ben’s nanites that are inside him. I thought Ben was nanite-free, so why does this alien have nanites? Before Rex can dwell on it further, his fist gains spikes on its knuckles and feels way more lethal than what he normally builds.
“Sweet! So what’s the plan?” Rex asks the alien head growing out of his arm.
“You build stuff, I make it better, fight fight fight, we win,” Ben states matter-of-factly. The confidence in Ben’s voice has Rex’s spirits lifting. It feels like he’s done something like this before and knows it’ll work out.
“Works for me!” Rex declares as the blob head disappears back…somewhere. He can’t really tell. Rex fastens his goggles over his eyes and builds his Boogie Pack. Following the usual feeling of the nanites forming the wings and propellers, he feels Ben rush in with his own nanites and they blast off into the sky towards Alpha. There was a slight delay when Rex formed his Boogie Pack but there most certainly isn’t one when he forms freaking rocket fists at Alpha. They explode right in Alpha’s empty eye sockets and it shrieks from the impact and staggers on its insectoid legs.
Rex lands and summons his Slam Cannon except Ben turns it into a massive multi-rocket launcher. As the rockets hit their target, he easily dodges Alpha’s flaming breath attack and oh my god the Boogie Pack also has rockets now. As the rockets fly at Alpha and blast it into the side of a building, Rex alights onto a rooftop.
“Nice shot Rex!” Ben cheers. Rex can’t tell if he’s hearing the other teen’s voice in his head or out loud but either way, he can’t help the satisfied smirk that crosses his lips. It’s quickly dashed from his face upon seeing Alpha pulling itself up and looming towards him. “Run run runrunrun!” Ben shouts with increasing urgency. Rex’s body is slow to react and it gets them sent into the side of a building and then on top of a car. Rex isn’t sure if it’s his grunt he hears or Ben’s upon landing on the vehicle.
He ignores the ache in his back or lack thereof and sprints back towards Alpha with inhuman speed before building his Rex Ride. Ben swiftly enhances it into a levitating motorcycle and they speed up a ramp where Rex switches to BFS and slices cleanly through Alpha’s arm and leg. He summons his Boogie Pack and doesn’t have time to think about the fact that with Ben he can build two machines at once as if the Omega nanite hadn’t been taken at all. With a final slice, Alpha is unbalanced and crashes into another building. Before Rex can celebrate, Alpha is regenerating its form with the nanites it absorbed from the EVOs in the Bug Jar and blasts him with its fiery breath. It knocks him back and as he’s tumbling across the empty street, he feels his nanites activating without his control. A Smack Hand forms and clings to the ground to stop his momentum.
Rex stares at his robotic hand in confusion. He didn’t build that. Rex feels the sensation of his nanites retreating from his build and he is left staring down at his now human hand. “Heads up, Rex!” Ben shouts and Rex is positive that he’s hearing Ben’s voice inside his head this time. Alpha slowly approaches them, giving Rex time to figure out a game plan.
“We need a direct shot,” Rex says aloud. “I’ve got an idea but you have to trust me! When I fire, you gotta make your roly-poly thing!” Ben is silent for a moment before muttering a quiet uh oh. “What’s wrong, Ben?” Rex asks, not hiding the worry in his voice.
“I can’t- I can’t get out of you,” Ben admits nervously. What.
“What?”
“Never mind, just take the shot! I’ll do what I can,” Ben says, all traces of trepidation gone from his voice. Rex pushes his concern to the back of his mind and builds the Slam Cannon again only this time instead of multiple rockets, it has one massive cannonball. Rex feels the nanites reacting to Ben and an aiming scope appears on the Slam Cannon as well as stabilizing mounts. He then aims carefully at Alpha before shooting the cannonball straight through Alpha where Rex detected the Omega nanite. It shrieks in agony and Rex has a feeling he got it. Before anything else can happen, Rex feels Ben controlling his nanites into disassembling the modified Slam Cannon and building Block Party around him and okay, now this is getting weirder than it already was and Rex has a lot of questions.
Alpha shrieks and explodes with a blaze of fire but Rex is unharmed because of the green bubble shield around him. Once the fire subsides, only Alpha’s legs remain as the rest of it has turned into a billowing nanite tower leading up to a cloud of red nanites. Rex retracts Block Party without any resistance from Ben and pumps his fists in the air with a whoop. “Woohoo, yeah! Oh yeah! He shoots, he scores! Woo, and the crowd goes wild!” Rex celebrates. A distant howl from inside the nanite cloud has Rex cutting his party of one short as he rushes to Alpha’s legs. “Whoa there little nanite brothers! Where do you think you’re going? Alpha’s not the only one who can tell you what to do!”
Rex immediately sets to work on forcing Alpha’s nanites into compacting in on themselves. He’s only tangentially aware of Ben because he feels a shiver within his nanites and a soft muttering he can’t make out. “Isn’t your Omega nanite going to be in there too?” Rex hears Ben ask aloud.
“I’ll handle that.” Rex hears César’s voice behind him and the sound of something being shot into the red sphere of nanites. “Where are you, little guy?” César mumbles to himself. “Got it!” Just as Rex lowers the nanite sphere closer to the ground, a blue light streams out of it and into César’s big gun. Rex continues concentrating on condensing the nanites until they’re collectively the size of a softball. He releases it and the red sphere of nanites falls to the ground with a sizeable crash.
“And that, my friend, is how you save the world!” Ben says lightheartedly. César looks around in confusion before realizing that Rex is “wearing” a new outfit.
“Is that?” César asks, pointing at the black and green suit. Rex nods. César stares and Rex has no doubt in his mind that his brother’s brain is whirring with ideas and theories.
“Oh yeah, speaking of. Ben, are you okay?” Rex asks, now that Alpha is properly contained. Ben pops his little alien head out of his arm again and Rex only flinches this time. He doesn’t miss César’s surprised gasp.
“I don’t know. I can’t separate myself from you for some reason. And as much as I’d love to stay here, I really should get back to my own universe and take Alpha away from here,” Ben replies. “Who knows when it’ll hatch like an egg.”
“Well, the density of the sphere is over 30 grams per centimeter cubed. It would be extremely difficult for Alpha to slip through the molecules of this. Assuming it survived compaction,” César explains as he scans the sphere with a handheld device. “We need to get rid of it. I wasn’t fully able to repair the Void Gun. I’m not sure how long my repairs will hold before it discharges. We only get one shot at this and we have to do it fast. It’s now or never, Rex.”
“César, wait! What about Ben?” Rex interrupts. “How is he supposed to get home if he’s still attached to me?” César pauses and appears to ruminate on this.
“If you can figure out how to separate us, I can take Alpha somewhere it won’t be able to escape from,” Ben offers, his little alien blob head still poking out of Rex’s arm. “That way you can be absolutely sure it won’t come back.” César actually seems to consider this.
“I am curious how you managed to merge with Rex,” César admits. “Still, I do need to get rid of Alpha. I’ll repair the Void Gun properly after this.” César picks up the Void Gun and fires it at Alpha, sending it into a portal before the portal quickly collapses in itself. Rex stands there dumbfounded at his brother’s action. “Oh, and before I forget,” César says as he rummages around with the other gun. He pulls out a smaller gun with a syringe on the end and appears to transfer the contents of the not-Void Gun into it. César then approaches Rex with the syringe gun.
“You’re sure this is the Omega, right? I mean, you didn’t grab the Alpha by mistake?” Rex questions sternly. César simply smiles at him.
“100% certain! Well, actually, 99.998%. Nothing is 100%,” César corrects. Just as he’s about to inject Rex with the Omega nanite, Ben audibly winces and the black and green suit retreats until Rex can’t actually see anything of Ben anymore. César watches with great interest as Ben’s form disappears.
“Okay, he can inject you now,” Ben says inside Rex’s head. Ben’s behavior was starting to worry Rex a little but he offers César his bare arm. César breaks out of his stupor and nods, sticking the syringe into the offered arm. Rex grits his teeth and closes his eyes as he feels the Omega nanite return to him. He flexes his arm to alleviate the ache before turning to César.
“You’ll be able to help Ben, right?” Rex asks. César contemplates this as he sits in his chair, no doubt planning to disappear in his aircraft.
“Perhaps. His alien biology is quite fascinating, though I doubt I’ll be able to study him regularly. Especially since White Knight will be after me,” César explains. “I’ll see what I can do.” Rex figures that that’s as solid an answer he’s going to get from his brother. Ben is oddly quiet during this so Rex leaves César to his computers and walks to a corner.
“Are you okay, Ben?” Rex whispers. There’s silence but he can feel an odd thrumming in his left shoulder. Rex twists around and pulls the neck of his shirt down and sees the black and green over his shoulder blade like a patch. Okay, so he’s not completely gone.
“Sorry Rex. I didn’t mean to get us stuck together like this. I only wanted to help. I feel like I keep screwing things up for you,” Ben admits and okay, Rex wasn’t expecting Ben to start apologizing right now.
“What are you talking about? We just saved the world together! You helped plenty!” Rex assures aloud.
“Are you talking to Ben?” César asks over his monitors. Rex blinks in surprise. Has Ben been only speaking inside his head? He hears Ben sigh but it sounds more like a defeated laugh.
“Yeah. Is he not speaking aloud?” Rex asks, somewhat already knowing the answer.
“You responded as if he said something to you,” César offers, which okay, thanks César for being less cryptic than usual. Ben groans but it sounds more like odd static rumbling that reverberates over Rex's shoulder.
“Whoa dude, Ben, that feels weird! Actually, everything about this situation is weird,” Rex complains. Ben stays silent after that. “Hey, sorry, this is just very new to me.”
“No, it’s not that. I’m just worried about the people I’ve left behind,” Ben says softly. “I don’t know what effect this will have in the space-time continuum if I’m stuck here because I’m not supposed to be here.” Rex was not expecting Ben to start getting this upset. Though, Rex isn’t sure how he’d be coping if he were tossed into a world where everyone he’s ever known and loved didn't exist. And he was stuck inside another person.
“Don’t worry Ben. Holiday or my brother will figure out how to separate us and get you home,” Rex promises. His eyes widen as he remembers that his mentor is still in a coma. “Oh my god, I need to check on Six! Adios, hermano!” Rex shouts as he exits his brother’s aircraft and quickly forms Boogie Pack. He feels Ben spread out across both of his shoulders and enhance the Boogie Pack but nothing else on Rex’s body appears to sport the black and green from earlier. Before César can call out to Rex, he takes off in a blast of green light towards headquarters.
Because of Ben’s upgrade, Rex got to headquarters in record time. He rushes to where Six was resting and sees Bobo and Dr. Holiday hovering over his pod. “Six…?” Ben whispers as he walks through the door. Bobo pads over with a serious expression on his face.
“He’s gone…” Bobo says gravely. No way.
“Gone?” Rex asks shakily. He averts his eyes and slowly drops to the ground in a crouch, his hands on his head. Six can’t be gone. There’s no way.
“…To the little ninja’s room!” Bobo finishes with a flourish of his hands. Rex feels a foreign rush of agitated nanites and remembers that Ben is still attached to him. Was he angry at Bobo?
“He’s going to be fine, Rex,” Dr. Holiday reassures. Rex lifts his head up, still in his hands.
“He is?! All right, yes!” Rex cheers, jumping up from his crouch and pumping a fist in the air. “Oh man, I knew it! I knew the whole time!” he shouts as he uses the momentum from his jump to skid across the floor in celebration. Rex hears the doors open behind him and he turns and sees Six walk in wearing a bathrobe. Rex quickly hides his excitement and feigns nonchalance by sticking his hands into his pockets and averting his gaze. “I mean, cool.” Rex looks back up to Six’s face and sees a small smile grace his features. Yep, can’t contain the excitement. He goes in for a hug with a rushed out, “I’m glad you’re alive!”
“Me too,” Six replies, Rex hearing the mild humor in his voice.
“I was so scared, Six. I’ve never done anything so hard in all my life. I really thought the world was going to end,” Rex admits, pulling away his embrace. “But then I totally kicked butt!” he adds, punching his fist into his palm.
“I hear you had a little help,” Six comments.
“Yeah, when his monster watch wasn’t conked out!” Rex chuckles. Oh, right, his watch is technically still conked out. “Actually, Six, he’s still here. We, uh, didn’t send him back yet.” Six raises a brow over his sunglasses. “Something happened with his monster watch and now he’s stuck to me. Stuck on me? Stuck in me? I don’t know but you can meet him officially,” Rex says. Ben spreads himself out over Rex’s arm so now it looks like he’s wearing a black and green sleeve. Then he pops his little alien head out of Rex’s arm. If it were possible for Six’s eyebrow to rise higher, well, it did.
“Hey, I’m sorry about you blowing up,” Ben apologizes, bowing his head. “For what it’s worth, I’m glad you’re alive.” Six hums in response, his brow lowering back behind his sunglasses. Ben then disappears back to somewhere on Rex’s back, leaving his arm bare.
“Six, you should take it easy. You’ve only just recovered from being in a coma. Rex, I would like to scan your bios,” Dr. Holiday orders. She waves Rex over and he follows her down the corridor to his usual bio scanner pod. He’s glad she didn’t put him in the pod Six was just in. He doesn’t know if he’d be able to handle that. Rex lies down in his usual pod and waits for Dr. Holiday to begin his scan.
“Is this a normal thing?” Ben asks. Rex jumps at Ben’s sudden question, which has Dr. Holiday looking over at him.
“Is everything alright Rex?” she asks, her brows furrowed.
“Y-yeah, Ben just asked me a question and it surprised me,” Rex replies with a nervous laugh. It looks like she wants to delve into his response more but she continues with the scan. “Yes, this is a normal thing. I lose my nanites when I fight so I have to recharge them. Scanning my bios is usually how we can tell how fast or slow they’re regenerating,” Rex explains aloud. Dr. Holiday looks at him again before looking at her screen, her lips pursed and brows drawn even more. Ben stays quiet during the rest of the bio scan but he does make his nanites hum, no doubt elevating his stats.
“Rex, you’re going to want to look at this,” Dr. Holiday says. Rex exits the pod and walks over to where she’s looking at the screen. He can see directly over his left shoulder a dark cluster labeled ‘unknown’.
“Oh, yeah, that’s Ben,” Rex replies easily. “But wait, isn’t he made of nanites now too? He feels like he’s made of nanites.” He turns to Dr. Holiday.
“He is? Our scanner isn’t picking that up. Maybe it’s because it’s from an alternate universe that it’s different enough that we can’t recognize it?” Dr. Holiday suggests. “I’d like run some more tests but you and Ben must be exhausted after today. Get some rest, Rex,” Dr. Holiday suggests before ushering Rex away. Rex thanks her and goes to his sleeping quarters. He gets to the door before Ben surprises him again.
“I could go for a smoothie,” Ben randomly comments.
“Stop doing that!” Rex gasps as he holds onto the doorway to still his racing heart. “And we don’t have smoothies here. Can you even eat the way you are?”
“No, I can’t,” Ben concedes. “I just miss smoothies. And chili fries. And my body.” Rex walks over to his cot and sits on the edge of it.
“How does this even feel for you, by the way? It felt weird when you entered my chest,” Rex asks, patting right over where Ben merged with him. Ben hums in thought and it makes Rex shudder.
“You feel different than other things I’ve possessed as this alien. Must be because you’re technically organic,” Ben answers. “Your nanites seem to be okay with me. I would have thought you’d have more security in you but you’re pretty easy to read.”
“Is that how you were able to force my builds?” Rex asks. He leans his elbows over his knees and rests his chin on his hands.
“Yep! Your nanites didn’t fight me on it. Probably because we were both in agreement in keeping you safe,” Ben speculates. “If we were in disagreement, I probably would have been ejected from you.”
“Then let’s try that!” Rex shouts, jumping up from the edge of his bed.
“I don’t want to hurt you though,” Ben argues. “Besides, that scary doctor of yours said to get some rest.”
“Is that why you were so quiet during the scan? Holiday isn’t scary at all! She’s super smart and super cute!” Rex insists. He feels Ben rolling his eyes. Or whatever the nanite approximation of it is. A thought suddenly dawns on Rex and oh boy, this is gonna be awkward. “I need to change and I should probably shower,” Rex starts. “Are you cool with that?”
“That’s fine,” Ben answers easily. Huh, okay. That was less awkward than I thought it was gonna be.
“Oookay then. If you say so,” Rex says skeptically. He takes his shoes and socks off before grabbing a towel and padding into the bathroom. Once inside, he closes the door and actually looks at where Ben is through the mirror. There is a round blob of black with the green circuitry pattern over his left shoulder and the symbol of Ben’s watch in the middle.
“I can move if you need me to,” Ben offers, his blob head appearing out of Rex’s shoulder.
“New rule! Only come out of my arms like that!” Rex yelps, attempting to shove Ben’s head back into his body with little success if Ben’s laughter is anything to go by.
“Fine fine, only your arms!” Ben relents. “Just take your shower.” Rex eyes Ben dubiously; pointing at him in the mirror to make sure he doesn’t pop out again. Though Rex isn’t even sure Ben can see him.
“Hey Ben? Can you see?” Rex asks. I hope he says no.
“Only if you want me to,” Ben replies. What kind of response is that? Rex watches the black and green patch expand down his back until a circle appears above where the watch used to be. Then Rex sees the circle make an expression like it’s an eye and Rex can’t help the blush that warms his face. “Based on your expression, I don’t think you want me to see right now,” Ben says smugly. The nerve of this guy! “I’ve seen a lot in my trips across the universe but if it bothers you so much, I’ll stop looking,” Ben amends before shrinking his spot on Rex’s back until it’s just the watch symbol again. That was an oddly ominous statement. Rex doesn’t dwell on it seeing as he just wants to get this shower over with at this point.
Ben stays quiet during the shower and Rex almost, almost forgets he’s there until he’s drying himself off and sees the patch of black and green over his shoulder. Rex pulls on his pajamas and exits the bathroom before lying down on his bed. What a day. He takes a deep breath, replaying the events in his head and remembering the feeling when Ben would upgrade his builds on the spot. Now that he’s out of danger, it’s occurring to him that Ben was able to do just what the Omega nanite did. He was able to boost Rex’s builds to the point he was effectively a replacement Omega nanite. If Ben is as powerful as the Omega nanite, will he be safe here? Rex has experience with being a weapon, a teenage soldier, but he doesn’t know if Ben has that experience. Which, silly thought, he probably does given how confident he was during most of the fight with Alpha. Rex opts to ask Ben in the morning now that exhaustion is catching up to him. He turns off the light, crawls underneath the covers and closes his eyes.
“Good night, Ben,” Rex mumbles to the dark.

I have so many things I want to draw about the three of them since I think their dynamic would be really fun—Ben being the most responsible one, Rex the laid-back one always trying to impress girls, and Zak… well, watching Rex’s failures (hehehe).
