i don’t mind suspending my disbelief for leverage’s person-sized ventilation shafts bc that’s pretty standard for the genre, but that doesn’t mean i won’t laugh a bit at some of the egregiously large vents. particularly in the crowning acheivement job (lev: red s2 finale) because - well just look at this lol! harry and parker, two adults, can kneel side by side in those vents. parker can sit upright.

that museum was made for vent crawling purposes. that’s just an extra room in the museum they forgot to decorate. the leverageverse has a thief union that successfully lobbied for a better working environment. these vents double as a playground for museum-goers’ children. i was crying with laughter thinking about this and harry’s vent crisis was NOT helping me remember that there was a serious heist thing going on lol, i love this show.
#leverage redemption#leverage#parker leverage#harry wilson#harry wilson leverage#parker#wren speaks#leverageposting#the sun roofs (or are they just lights?) really get me lmao#ALL of the person-sized vents are unrealistically large so this is not criticism! this is a generic convention!#vents are not human-sized and clean or remotely safe enough to reliably crawl through irl#but basically every building in every crime drama has comfortably person-sized vents#usually for knee crawling not even people lying on their stomach bc that’s difficult to move and looks sillier#and that thin layer of the ceiling under the vent is usually surprisingly built well enough to support a persons weight#and there’s no fans or rats or dust or bugs or that foil tube stuff i forgot the word for#and it’s often oddly well-lit. and that’s okay! it’s fiction! we’re having fun!#sewers tend to be unrealistically large + accessible + well-lit etc in fiction too.#anyway my point is i’m not saying this as criticism! just a neutral obserativion of something i found funny!

i say this with all my heart, from one person who cares about animal welfare to hopefully many others:
please take the term “factory farm” out of your vocabulary when discussing animal welfare
talking about the welfare of livestock and livestock production is incredibly important! all animals deserve to have the best welfare possible, regardless of if they’re going to end up on a plate or not
but the term “factory farm” does not actually discuss animal welfare in the way so many people seem to assume it does
for starters, “factory farm” is not an actual industry term. it doesn’t actually mean anything, because what constitutes a factory farm is completely subjective. you will never see the phrase “factory farm” in any kind of published research or official article because, again, it doesn’t mean anything
sure, the phrase definitely has connotations. and the connotation is the issue here. people use the term “factory farm” as a shorthand for… well, typically, “farming practice i don’t understand but think looks bad”
the term isn’t something neutral. it is specifically designed to create a negative image when you hear it. someone says “factory farm” and most people imagine large amounts of animals kept in bad condition
the key here: large amounts of animals
the size of a farm does not dictate the welfare of the animals on it. there are plenty of large farms with hundreds, thousands of animals that take stellar care of their livestock. there are small farms with only a couple animals that live horrible lives
the size of a farm is not the issue when it comes to animal welfare, but rather the practices used on the farm. sometimes they do go hand in hand, yes. there are some practices that are only necessary because of the amount of animals present
but say that
there are other terms that are actually industry terms that work better for these scenarios. try “conventional farming” “industrialized farming” “commercialized farming”. these actually have meanings that you can then jump off of into talking about animal welfare practices on these farms
“factory farming” is just a term used to paint farming in an entirely negative light, when what actually makes a farm have good or bad welfare depends on so many other things
#mal's shitposts#animal welfare#my point being people use the phrase factory farming to insinuate farming or a type of farming is bad#when what really needs to be said is something like:#[x] practice used in conventional/commercial farming is harmful because of [x]#ask five different people to describe a factory farm and you’ll get five different answers#ask five different people whether a certain farm is a factory farm and you’ll get five different answers#and a lot of it comes down to how well people understand farming practices#some things seem or look cruel but are actually the best practice#and some things seem like a great idea but aren’t actually good for animal welfare#‘factory farming’ is just a broad generalization for something that is so nuanced

#that which could not be included:#scarecrow#sci-fi (aliens‚ robots‚ mad scientists. my mind seems to separate sci-fi and horror as concepts so it just lumps these all together lol)#pirate apparently#the headless horseman. just a smidge to specific and singular#generic 'monster' that isn't an alien but is physically weird as if it were#technically haunted dolls but veering a bit less ''conventional''#i wouldn't count folklore like Medusa or the minotaur cause then this list would be endless. plus feels weird to level those as 'spooky'#I'm thinking too much now I'm done lol#Halloween

going to say something about writing that is not a complaint and i know it sounds exactly like someone complaining but the conclusion i have drawn is that this rules. preface over am currently "working on" (in the most generous, nebulous sense possible) an original fantasy story & i just keep finding more stuff about the world i need to decide because it feels extremely formative to me even though it will barely appear on the page, if at all
but like... just the sheer volume of communication irl that happens symbolically that you never question becomes so apparent when you try to create a world that doesn't have those things or doesn't have the conditions for such a thing to be created. writing a character wearing a wedding ring and then going wait a minute— would these people communicate marital status via ring placement? why do we do that irl? when did we start? surely thats not the only way people ever communicate marriage— what does everyone else do? and really, come to think of it, what does it mean to be 'married' in this fictional world i'm creating? is there a legal component or just a social one? should it have all the same connotations/obligations as the real world (e.g. monogamy, having children, romantic love, impact on finances, etc)?
you can do this with literally Everything In The World. what language is everyone speaking? is it the same one? how many languages are there in the region i'm writing about? is the language we're speaking anyone's second language? when did they learn? is bilingualism common? and where does everyone here live? speaking of living, is that a permanent dwelling situation or are people nomadic? what's the climate like? are all the characters here used to the climate or is someone used to ten degrees cooler and kind of short tempered because of it? the clothes are probably impacted by the weather, what's everyone wearing? what's it made out of? what would be around here that could be used for dye? help me i have a case of worldbuilders disease and its incurable. these motherfuckers are never going to finish this journey because i cant even get them on the page long enough to pack a cart. also would they use carts? when did we start having cart and carriages pulled on roads irl? if there's roads, who's maintaining them— or is it just the path from years of people travelling that way? does the terrain allow for wheeled vehicles or would some other way be better?
anyway. you may call all this a waste of time and "not technically writing" since i "havent written any prose". i think im just slow cooking this novel. oooooh im thinking about it so much. you just wait when im like 56 im going to knock your socks right off with my intricate detailed world where i thought about everything except whatever element of society you understand most deeply. that part i fucked up and clearly didn't know anything about. sorry
#trying to make a couple basic words so i can derive names from them. so hard. SO hard. extremely doesnt matter#but also l*ghtlark has now turned me deeply against the 'generic noun' sort of fantasy naming conventions#[muttering under my breath] starstick... wildlings... moonling. sunling. the fuckin... bondbreaker#so i have to do SOMETHING. some effort into fantasy naming. things i actually thought about and didnt use a random generator for lol#good idea generator

Initially came because I saw the hot shark man ridge. Stayed for the masterful story you’re making. I love
Thank you! Here's a bonus doodle of Ridge, as a treat.
#also thank you in general to everyone who has sent me nice asks and questions!#I am working on putting together answers for several of them but they come in faster than I can draw and script#I'm not ignoring them on purpose though just super busy and with finite drawing time#working on a bunch of projects at the moment including 2 comics scripted a few asks maybe convention stuff etc#plus some life stuff like trying to get my new deck railing installed before the weather turns#and getting the new Wishbone beta released#so if I've been scarce lately that's why :P#my ocs#ridge#verse: amaranthine#furry#ask

One of the best things about Disco Elysium by far is that it does not fear ugly women. The world is full of ugly men, but ugly women are so hard to come by.
#I'm not calling the characters ugly btw#i don't believe any one can be ugly#i do not care for beauty standards and thus i don't rank people based on how “ugly” or “pretty” they are#but the characters in DE do not meet the conventional beauty standards and look like actual people with unique faces#and thus would be considered “ugly”#and that is so important to me. i go feral whenever media represents how people look like in real life and not how they look like in the#fictional parallel universe where everyone is a model and where a majority of the movies take place#because irl you don't have to be a model to be desirable#the most attractive man in any video game I've ever played has a receding hairline and a big nose and thick glasses and a small chin#and not only is representing realistic people. just good. in general. but it makes the character of Dolores Dei stand out so much more which#works for the game so well. she's barely human. she's a deity- a myth- a legend. the only version that exists of her now is the one with#glowing lungs. she's perfectly beautiful because she's inhuman. the fact that everybody else looks so human only highlights how inhuman she#has become yk?#if everyone was as conventionally attractive as her then she wouldn't stand out. we wouldn't get why she's so special.#disco elysium#disco elysium analysis#media analysis#beauty standards#this is only one aspect of how this game portrays real people btw. as someone interested in character design this just immediately stood out#to me#the first time i noticed it was when i first met garte and the second time was when i met ruby because neither are conventionally desirable#oh my fucking god the nerds who complain about a woman with a model face having body hair in a video game would perish if they played this#mainstream game/movie studios catering to western masses could never

I do think character design diversity is important but pls let's not act like the boys in dandadan are diverse when they're all skinny white-skinned generically attractive boys with ONE exception
The point of the post wasn't even so much diversity as it was just character distinguishability. Whether you think Okarun's design is "attractive" or not he still has notably different features and a different build from Jiji, meanwhile Momo and Aira are identical aside from their hair and eyebrows.
And then there's obviously the aliens.

Where the male ones look weird in their base forms and have even weirder transformations, but the one female alien just happens to be a girl with antenna 100% of the time.
This weird need for female characters to be one specific kind of attractive all the time just gets in the way of decent character design.
#i think even the fact that people think Okarun's design is “generally attractive” shows how pervasive this is#because he's MEANT to be the dweeb ass everyman protagonist. he's mid so the mid viewer can project onto him#but because we've spent so long allowing male body diversity we can see multiple different male builds as “conventional” while there's still#only one kind of attractive available to women (and every woman must be it)#jiji is conventionally attractive but he's literally the only one. we are blinded by the fact that every girl is in love with okarun#but hes not good-looking. meanwhile momo is canonically pretty and aira is canonically pretty and vamola is canonically pretty and even#the grandma is canonically pretty#like cmon guys. please#the class president was sort of the bland one but then they put her through magical girl idol transformation and turns out she too is#canonically pretty and build identical to every other girl in the series#dandadan#asks#momo ayase#aira shiratori#jin enjoji#okarun#vamola

Kind of a sequel to this behold what happens when I listen to ‘Sailor Song’ on repeat for 3 hours during mermay. How every swimming expedition goes after this discovery.
‘Alright all ready to go, I just need you to… uh. You know?’
‘Oh? OH. Right uh. For. Underwater breathing purposes.’
‘Yes yeah right that’s it no other reason it’s just. Yeah.’
Behold a completely platonic kiss. Very businesslike.
#mermay#I’m losing my mind can you tell#robbie reyes#lisa (ghost rider)#ghost rider mer au#my art#ughhhhhh I need to draw more convention stuff but I just wanna draw more of the fimsh. the FIMSH.#this angle was a pain in the ASS by the way#I don’t draw kissing frequently. I generally leave enough room for Jesus yk#so this was a challenge

J.G. Hertzler and Bob O'Reilly, our beloved Klingons Martok (DS9) and Gowron (TNG, DS9), have much fun on the FedCon stage with the audience. Everyone asking a question had to talk like a Klingon. 😅 Qapla'!

It’s kind of wild seeing Viz use RWBY to advertise their new merch shop alongside Bleach and Frieren. Like they’re both very highly rated and popular anime. RWBY for real is the little web series that could and idk what’s in store for its future but despite the lack of v10 news (for good reason) I have a lot of hope for it
and not just alongside those but directly before them, like Viz is putting a lot of faith in RWBY and its fandom, and we haven't even gotten to the good stuff yet
#rwb/y#think we should keep our eyes on any upcoming big anime conventions (in both the US where Viz will be and in Japan generally)#not in expectation of any major announcements mind - they'd be teasing the shit out of that well beforehand - but on the angle of#more merch announcements and possibly smaller manga projects

Idk i feel like complaining about relationship dynamics in shipping fandom is like looking at high fantasy setting and complaining that there's dragons. It's a fantasy. It's not a 1 to 1 mirror of life.
#not fallout#kal talks#1. if you dont like it you can write other stuff#2. a great deal of fandom is shipping/ao3 is almost entirely shipping... people generally want their romances to work out??#like a lot of these complaints seem directed at the romance genre in general in which case... idk how to help you#sounds like you just dont like those particular genre conventions idk#3. i have definitely read multiple fics that have done all the things you complained never happen???#like ive actually noticed a marked shift in romance writing away from 'one true love'
