Catching Up on Movies I Happened to See in March 2025
CREDIT: (Clockwise from Top Left): Marvel Entertainment; Ketchup Entertainment; Stan Alley/IFC Films; Cinetic Oh wow, look at the time! I guess I’ve been pretty busy the last few weeks. Marbled Monday
This week's Marbled Monday post is A Study of the Illuminated Books of William Blake: Poet, Printer, and Prophet. It was written by British surgeon and author Geoffrey Keynes and published by the Trianon Press in 1964. The Trianon Press was a Paris-based publisher of fine art books founded in 1947 by Arnold Fawcus. The book includes an essay on Blake's illuminated books and reproductions of some of his illustrations. They are printed on paper specially made to reproduce the tint of the paper used by Blake.
The slipcase and binding are covered in the same marbled paper—a red field with green, chartreuse, and lighter red veining. The book is quarter-bound in brown Morocco leather and features the title gold-stamped on the spine and a gold-tooled line where the leather and marbled paper meet on the front and back covers. It is signed by Geoffrey Keynes.

The Saint: The Double Take (6.6, ITC, 1968)
"Now, Templar, please... You are very angry, yes?"
"That is an understatement."
"It will all be made good. You are here, now listen to me and sit down. I need something done, done urgently."
"Mr. Patroclos, let's get one thing straight. I very rarely do favours for the overprivileged - and never under pressure."
#the saint#the double take#1968#itc#leslie charteris#leslie norman#john kruse#roger moore#grégoire aslan#kate o'mara#denise buckley#blake butler#michael robbins#june abbott#michael mellinger#martin wyldeck#geoffrey morris#rose alba#anne godfrey#iain blair#michael pemberton#somewhat frustratingly we seem to have hit another dip in picture quality; it's not that the picture is particularly bad or fuzzy it's just#that it looks really quite faded when compared with the last couple or with the monochrome eps. anyway this is an intricately plotted#mystery along the doppelganger line‚ and pretty cleverly done; i still guessed the twist almost instantaneously‚ just bc it's the only#thing that made sense. the clever but relatively simple plot made me think this could have been based on a Charteris story (making it one#of the last eps to be so) but apparently not; he may have contributed a plot outline of some sort but it's Kruse's script. funnily enough#this is a rare backwards adaptation case: the ep would be turned into a short story for a 70s Saint collection credited to Charteris but#written by one of his ghost writers (as all post 60s Saint books were). Kate O'Mara is once again in doubling territory but doesn't have to#play two characters this time‚ just look sort of kind of a tiny bit like Denise Buckley (she doesn't all that much succeed tbh)#still she's playing a nice calm character for once and not a raving vamp threatening to murder anyone who crosses her

Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer - Pirates of the Caribbean - He's a Pirate 2003
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a 2003 American fantasy swashbuckler film directed by Gore Verbinski, and starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley. The plot follows the pirate Jack Sparrow and the blacksmith Will Turner as they attempt to rescue the kidnapped Elizabeth Swann. The trio encountersthe crew of the Black Pearl, who are afflicted by a supernatural curse.
After composer Alan Silvestri left the project, Hans Zimmer was asked to score the film, but since he was working on other projects, he gave the assignment to his colleague Klaus Badelt. Badelt is known for his collaborations with Zimmer, helping to write scores for dozens of critically acclaimed films including The Thin Red Line, The Prince of Egypt, and Gladiator. Zimmer however ended up writing many of the themes, including an early version of "He's A Pirate". Since the schedule was very tight and the music was needed for the film in three weeks, seven other composers — Ramin Djawadi, James Dooley, Nick Glennie-Smith, Steve Jablonsky, Blake Neely, James McKee Smith, and Geoff Zanelli — were called upon to help orchestrate the music and write additional cues. The resulting score was recorded with a group of musicians over the course of four days.
"He's A Pirate" received a total of 94,7% yes votes - sooo close to reaching the top spot of this blog!!! Previous PotC-related polls: #221 "Jack Sparrow"

WIP Re-Intro: Herald At Dawn
Title: Herald at Dawn
Genre: Murder Mystery, vaguely noir, vaguely historical fantasy
Status: draft 3 ! / 20k words as of late feb 2025
Setting: Unspecified American city in September/October of 1949
Universal TW/CW: Murder, corruption, legal systems being really really shit at their job, period-typical homophobia, cheating/affairs on spouses (past), bribery, death, implied past sexual assault, severe injury, discussion of war, religion (& complicated relationships to it).
Plot/Synopsis: In 1941 Alexandrina McLelland was a court reporter, covering the case where Evelyn Belmont was tried for the murder of her husband's mistress, Marisol Ekker. Ms. Belmont was acquitted, Marisol Ekker’s son went to live with distant relatives, and the case drifted out of the public eye. A world war later, and with Marisol’s son now 18, Alex is ready to expose the dirty laundry of the Belmonts--one of the most powerful families in the city-- , & the corruption that let Geoffrey Belmont bribe a judge and three members of the jury, & the systemic hatred that meant he didn’t need to bribe the other nine to ensure his wife’s freedom. Shortly after her article is published--in The Clockwork Herald, the paper her father wrote at for two decades--one of the highest ranking politicians in the city is murdered. There's seemingly no connection, until someone points out that he was a member of the jury during the Ekker Trial.
Notes: Two major things are different from actual, historical september/october 1949: fae exist, and passenger pigeons didn’t go extinct in 1914. they are not extinct at all, and in fact exist in large numbers. They’re also sentinent, but that really has more to do with the fae than anything else.
Main Characters & Important Side Characters:
Alexandrina "Alex" Gates. 31, she/her, aroace. She's been The Clockworks Herald's investigative reporter for the last 8 years, and before that she was a court reporter for another paper. She writes under the name Alexandrina McLelland, the same last name her father used when he was the Herald’s investigative journalist 20 years ago. She wants to finish what her father started and expose the crimes of the city’s wealthy and powerful, but it's going slower than she would like.
James Blakely. 32, he/him, gay, editor at the Herald. Alex's childhood friend, and Leo's partner. Is best described as a golden retriever with anxiety. He worries too much for his own good. James inherited editorship of the Herald from his uncle 5 years ago, but he had been working there in various capacities since he was a teenager. He cares about the truth, and about his friends.
León "Leo" Rivera. 33, he/him, bisexual & bilingual. Writes the pages on politics at the Herald, James' partner. Leo wrote the original Herald articles on the Ekker trial 8 years ago; he used to be a court reporter. He does his best to not get hurt by his job, but sometimes he’s terrible at it (Chapter 10. Chapter 10 is when he’s really, really terrible at it.). He’s also cursed by the Fae, but he tries not to think about that. Leo’s favorite hobby is annoying politicians, and he’s extremely good at it.
Ronald Wilkes. 58, he/him, ???. Sports reporter at The Clockwork Herald. Donovan was his best friend, and they worked together before he died. He blames himself for Donovan’s death, got a cigarette addiction about it, very sad all the time. I think far too much about him. He wants to stop Alex from dying the way her father did, but it isn’t really working. Alex & Amelia’s godfather. Desperately in need of therapy. Unfortunately, the 40s.
Donovan Gates. Deceased, died 20 years ago (he was 37, he would be 58). He/him. Former investigative reporter at the Herald. Currently, his main job is making his best friend (Ronald) very, very sad. Alex & Amelia’s father, Ronald’s best friend, Mary’s husband. He was murdered in an alley when he was 37, because he was working on an article about cheating at the horse races, until the subject found out and objected strongly. He wrote under the pen name “D. McLelland”.
Amelia Gates. 37, she/her, ???. Fae liaisons clerk. Her job is to deal with all the random Fae shit that goes on in the city, and she doesn’t get paid enough about it. Alex’s older sister, Donovan & Mary’s daughter. Close with Ronald. She wants Alex to not die the way their father did, doing dangerous shit just for tiny fragments of information. She also wants Alex and their mother to start speaking to each other again.
Mary Gates. 58, she/her, ???, retired. She used to be a switchboard operator. Alex & Amelia’s mother, Donovan’s wife, and Ronald’s... it's complicated. She blames Ronald for Donovan’s death, and they haven’t spoken for 20 years, but they used to be good friends. She’s worried for Alex (who has the exact same job her father did), and feels bad for what she said to Ronald the last time they spoke.
Nathaniel Ekker. 19, he/him, queer. Tailor, and the son of the woman whose murder was the focus of the Ekker trial. He agreed to do Alex's article on the condition it would be anonymous (and it was). He was 12 when his mother was killed by his father’s wife. His aunts (fae and cursed by the fae, respectively) raised him, and he hasn’t lived in the city since his mother died. He wants his mother’s murderer to be brought to justice, but he also wants to have a quiet and unnoticed life without having to deal with his father.

I'm not sure how to info dump for a bunch of character concepts in a way that's digestible but eh whatever
Concept work for a group of mafia hitwomen and their long suffering handler. They're likely going to be used in a underground illegal wrestling ring arc because that's all I really want in my media.
This post plus additional sketches and more background info will be going up on my patreon and kofi tomorrow.
more under the cut,
They're all vampires that I really cooked up to test a concept for vamps for my comic project. Based on a blood sucking animal and a historical anti-vampire burial method, some of the burial methods are gonna be pushed and fibbed because there's not that many of them. so yeah incidental vampires will have a cage motif even tho I know good and well that cages were to prevent resurrection men getting in not vampires getting out. I feel that's thematically close enough. There's so many really good sanguivore animals out there these are maybe too safe even.
The other thing I really wanted to accomplish with these designs is targeting lesbians, hey ladies these are for you. How am I doing?
going left to right here we got
Flea- She's a Flea I tried taking a lot from Blake's Ghost of a Flea but I don't think it comes through. Her grave-shackle is that scythe coming out her shoulder, it's maybe a bit of a stretch, the real thing was buried in the ground next to the corpse so if it rose it would decapitate itself but I didn't really want to complicate the design with a bunch of dirt or something. Regardless I like her design a lot. Short hairy goblin of a woman, someone stop me from naming her Puce.
Mosquito- Her hair took a little bit to sort out, it used to be real bad but this mess is perfect. Horrible 90's stylized part call back, reminiscent of boxer braids while being ostentatious enough to work in any setting. That cool bangle is her grave-shackle, an actual shackle this time. Her build was immediate, huge arms, weird long butt, perfection. She's the easiest to dress which isn't that surprising considering shes thinner but usually big arms are really difficult in women's wear. Flea is actually the second easiest to dress. There's gotta be a better name than Malaria, but i could call her Mal.
Geo(?)- small mafia man, constantly put upon, constantly behind the 8-ball with upper management; you know the type. The other guys definitely tell him he's lucky all the time but they'd never switch assignments with him. Why is he so small? because I can do whatever i want. His name might be Geoffrey.
Lamprey- Went through the most iterations, was very hard to piece together a woman this disaster lesbian. The spike through the heart, traditionally meant to keep the alleged vampire pinned to the ground was always part of the design, so was the long neck and heart lipstick, the hook earring came and went. Everything else was difficult; general build was pretty similar but i didn't actually work until I gave her a gut and dropped her waist. I used to have gill markings on her neck that looked like vampire bite marks and that took a while to give up but that hair is too good. She probably will end up being named Nakkila, it's a Finnish town with lamprey on their crest.
Leech- Took just two stabs to get her hair, body and face where I wanted it. Those bright red eyebrows work so well to subtly mimic leech markings, her hair shapes are perfect and I love drawing them. It's hard to tell at this size but her lips are sewn together which works almost too well for the theming, the cartoon jack'o lantern shape just sits right on a leech. Being built like a brick shithouse with fantastic fat rolls really gives the body diversity in the group the punch it needs. But dear god in heaven she is so hard to dress! I'm liking this dress a moderate amount right now and I really love the shoes but it's not perfect. I've tried suits instead, I've down active wear, all crazy difficult. It's like fashion doesn't want to accentuate horizontal stripes on large bodies or something? I gotta keep trying on it. I've almost convinced myself to name her Annelid.

Literary Canon (from kissgrammar)
The Holy Bible, Authorized King James Version [At a minimum, the books of Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, from the Old Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Apocalypse from the New.] Whether or not you are Christian is irrelevant. The civilization in which we live is based on and permeated by the ideas and values expressed in this book. Understanding our civilization, the world in which we live, is probably impossible without having read -- and thought about -- at least the most famous books in the Bible. Historically, the King James Version is considered the most artistic, and thus has probably had the most literary influence.
