The world is seeing alarming rates of population declines for sharks around the globe. Targeted fisheries and bycatch have rendered one-third of shark species to becoming vulnerable to extinction (Dulvy et. al., 2014) For an animal that has been around since the age of dinosaurs, it is important to preserve their presence in the ocean. Thankfully, shark sanctuaries collectively cover >3% of the world's oceans (Ward-Paige,Worm 2017.) A study showed that shark sanctuaries experience less pronounced shark population declines as well as lower levels of sharks being sold and fished. (Ward-Paige, Worm 2017) Just like home security systems keep out robbers, it is critical for these areas to be protected from commercial fishermen and threats to the environment. “Since 2009, fifteen coastal countries in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans have opted to ban commercial shark fishing altogether and have laws that prohibit the possession, trade or sale of sharks and shark products.” (Ward-Paige, Worm 2017.) Though steps are being made to reverse this curse of shark fishing, it is still important to push for more regulations and laws around the world.  #oneocean  #environmentalissues #globalconcern #shark #sanctuary.
