is anybody else upset that instead of authors' unions and the development of labor power, every ounce of discourse and effort towards writers making a living wage is geared towards digital intellectual property rights and digital theft protection. like i don't know about anybody else but I am actually not excited for major publishing companies to be algorithmically searching for and DMCA striking books that are "similar enough" to their copyright. I don't trust AI to be able to tell when something is adulterated metadata vs when something is just very similar. I fucking hate DRM already. I hate buying a book and either being restricted in use of my property or taking it through multiple complicated steps to remove it for an epub file compatible with calibre, where I can file and tag it appropriately.
and i don't think we're going to find any kind of salvation for writers and writing this way. I think we're going to launch another digital arms race (like with removing DRM) while continuously empowering the already wealthy to consolidate power and crush meaningful change through slap suits and the like.
and this is because digital theft is the only problem that the publishing industry is willing to address. because strengthening intellectual property protections doesn't protect art or artists, it allows the big players to better control the playing field and force it to benefit themselves.
Okay, this may prove useful.
#i love writing. i love reading. i love authors. i want them to live well and i want to thank them for the gift of their story#i do not think that the solution proposed solves any of the actual problems here. at best it's a bandaid. at worst its muddy cloth shoved#into an open wound to staunch the bleeding.#i don't think that better anti-theft software is going to improve the wider cost of living crisis causing this behavior OR the remarkably#exploitive nature of the publishing industry which was difficult to make a living in when people COULD actually pay for books.#i think it's just going to give massive corporations another way to disincentivize competition and punish poor people.#also truly sick to death of how willing some artists are to see their poor fans and readers as the primary barrier standing between them an#financial solvency. like 'if the poors would JUST PAY everything would be fine. if we could just STOP ALL THE THEFT everything will be fine#i don't think that's correct! i think that's trying to squeeze blood from a stone#constant reminder that criminalized theft is overwhelmingly a desperation crime and when people HAVE money they pay for their shit.#this isn't a defense of the scam companies ripping off books and selling them. obviously i do not think that's a desperation crime.#what i AM saying is that they're catering to a market publishing companies wrote off by making damn near every book $25+ when overhead on#producing more digital files is literally $0. maybe the greed is a big problem. maybe an inflated price point increases theft.#+ pretending Art and Writers are a special case where the dynamics of class and access we're SO comfortable applying everywhere else#somehow do not count. like because it's Art it's More Wrong to steal than food or whatever. 'you don't have a right to their art! you can g#without!' right after posts explaining that yes having fun is medically necessary. if you cant pay for food you cant pay for fun.#you still need both.#i think poor readers and fans are going for cheap or free stuff because we're in a recession/depression/cost of living crisis and they#can't pay for ANYTHING.#what did we expect to happen when we decided to lock every facet of human life behind a paywall. that they'd just politely disappear?#i hate living in the gilded age 2.0. hate the crabs in a bucket effect. hate that the richest are getting away with it while we scratch eac#other's eyes out and blame the vulnerable for failing to perfect cultural abstinence in order to mitigate the impacts of elite greed#rich people made this mess. go after the rich people. they've got literally all the money anyway.

part two (previous) || series masterlist (read part one here)
“so good to hear from you mr. nanami kento. the way you’ve been, you’d almost forget that i made up this whole jujutsu technology thing.”
nanami put a hand up to his temple, realizing that he had forgotten just how much of a pain in the ass his friend turned superior was.
gojo satoru was notorious for revolutionizing the technology field with his creations. jujutsu tech was a frivolous venture — one that he had began to prove to their inner circle of friends and investors that he was truly, one of the most innovative entrepreneurs of all time.
of course, when the load and expectations became quite much, he decided to stick to the press and marketing area and left most of the operations to kento.
“since when did you entertain relations with atlantis solutions?” he sighed, “and i want the straight answer. not some bullshit.”
“ah, i see you’ve met the stunning ceo then. what’s your impression?” from his tone, nanami can practically feel the smirk from gojo across the line.
“answer my question or i will be forced to come and seek you out in person.”
“so stern nanami,” gojo laughs. “look, the only reason i agreed to the deal is because atlantis solutions has the software knowledge we need to expand. there is no reason we shouldn’t meet that profit margin. plus, you need to get around a little.”
“what?” he asks.
“admit it,” gojo laughs again, “they’re your type.”
“i do not mix personal matters with business,” he responds, trying not to think of yesterday’s encounter.
you, soaked in the rain, clothes clinging to soft skin, lips plush and so innocently asking for a ride home — only to be a candidate for taking over both of your companies.
“yes, absolutely your type,” gojo concludes all on his own. “go to that meeting and be yourself.”
with that, gojo drops the call, only moments before his secretary walks in.
“mr. nanami,” she says, “it’s time for the meeting. the atlantis solutions ceo is already in conference room three.”
“of course,” he says, unsurprised that you’re in that room and his heart’s already picked up pace.
the walk to the conference room is agonizing. with every step he attempts to strategize, wondering if he will truly be able to measure up to you. you’re formidable….and distracting, two things that will mess up the focus and clarity he needs to be the ceo that his company needed.
when he walks in, the breath is almost stolen from his lungs when he sees you again. somehow, in the forty five minutes that you’d been gone, you’d managed to make yourself even more stunning than usual.
he supposed you came to him in some state of undress, if how you looked now was your normal presentation.
he took his seat on the other side of the table, looking at his papers and doing everything he could not to look at you until he couldn’t anymore.
“hello there kento,” you say, and he’s winded by the way his first names leaves your lips.
say it again, his thoughts nearly beg, but he regains his composure.
“let’s begin our negotiations.” he says, “starting with this. atlantis solutions ceo must work at our office headquarters if this deal is to go through. i do not want our operations being separate if we are in a business venture together.”
your gasp gives him the confidence he needs to continue.

Sombra finding a way to hack and corrupt Hana's mech, while she is still inside corrupting her in the process
Ask originally sent by @tokufan400
Hana is... a bit suspicious of Sombra. She knows that the girl is... a friend of Lucio's, given his Freedom Fighter past, but even then, their methods and behaviours are rather different. Sombra is a dark creature, walking in the shadows - so much so she made that her name - while Lucio shines in the sunlight, inspiring and bringing hope to others. There's a reason why she adores the Brazillian man, and she is even dating him. But Sombra's friendship with him, and even her flirting with the two of them can be a bit too much sometimes. Even if she has to admit, seeing those two gorgeous teammates did awaken something inside of her, but she'd never admit to it. She doesn't have the courage to do so.
Well, not like it matters. Hana is currently inside her mecha, training alone in Gibraltar. Most of the Overwatch crew is busy, even Lucio had left for a mission with a few others. Just her, Sombra, Tracer and Zen were left back at the base, and knowing Tracer, she'll spend the entire day inside the plane simulator of their base. Of course, that isn't an issue... or she doesn't think so. After all, she has no idea that an invisible Sombra has been watching her for the past 30 minutes or so as she flies around and shoots different targets.
Sombra is... a bit annoyed with Hana. She has always known that Lucio likes girls that are... softer. While Hana is a bit of a gremlin, their relationship is pure and wholesome... which is an issue for the Mexican hacker. After all, she has a crush on both of them and she wants to both fuck the tiny Asian whore and also be pounded from today until tonight by the Brazillian stud. A big issue... until she found a solution.
Hypnosis isn't the catch-all solution to everything many people think it is. It's complicated, technically complex and more often than not, too hard to implement. The subject needs to be in an isolated environment, slowly pushed towards their true self, and that needs to be something they at least like or want to become. Not the easiest of conditions to be fulfilled, but right now, Sombra knows she has Hana right where she wants.
She makes sure she has that small hypno background program going on and sends it towards Hana's mech. The thing is a fortress, one of the most complicated hardware and software links Sombra has ever seen... or it would've been if she hadn't purchased the schematics of its own software in the black market a few days ago. It was a piece of cake to get inside the bot and to start blasting two different things. The first of them is a song so low Hana wouldn't be able to hear it even with her guns not firing, but one that would blast her brain. And the second one is a small hypno pattern on top of her HUD, that would start with a spiral.
Hana, of course, doesn't even pay any attention to what is going on, even as she sees something... different with her HUD. Given her training inside that bot and all the effort, she puts daily, even the smallest of differences would jump up to her, but she can't pin... anything too wrong. Just like there's some sort of interference... which she chalks up to the girl who just comes around.
"Oh, Hi Sombra. Was thinking about ya, even." Hana says, moving to get off her bot, but Sombra shakes her head.
"Hi, Chica. Always nice to meet you again! No need to hop off, wanted to see you a bit in action inside that machine!" Sombra chuckles, knowing that is a normal request - she has to admit, it is impressive seeing the different members of Overwatch doing their best to work as hard as possible in their own field. Seeing Hana flying around has a beauty to it, and the gal also understands others will be interested in that.
"Eh, sure. I'm having some fun here!" The gamer grins, back towards her training and enjoying it once more. Sombra, however, isn't there just to stay silent. The hypno patterns prime the woman towards the corruption, the bot itself with so many juicy options, but for now, she wants to get the hypno ball going.
"It must feel great to be there, just shooting at things in the outside! Almost letting you get in the zone, right?" Sombra ponders, with Hana nodding.
"Sure is. It feels good and it is nice to just... let go sometimes. I can feel my mind growing empty sometimes!" The zen of a battlefield is a well-known effect, drawing attention to it would help Sombra getting Hana deep into her own trance without the gremlin noticing it.
"You have been going there for half an hour? You must be... rather close." She teases once more, intensifying the lights and the spiral just a tiny bit.
"...Y-Yeah..." Hana takes a moment to reply, her hands growing a bit sloppy at the target, she is just... really zoning out, huh?
"So much so you are almost asleep." Sombra is now inside the speakers from the mecha that were producing the low song. Her voice coming from all around Hana, who is starting to get so much under it she doesn't even notice that Sombra is doing something, just that something is wrong.
"S-Sombra, som'ting is off, I need to..." She tries to get off... but Sombra made sure to deactivate that leaver too.
"No no, no getting off, you are so tired, so into the combat feel, it would be dangerous. Stay there, look at the spiral~" With another flick of her wrist, the spiral takes full control of the HUD she is using, not letting her gaze be adverted at all. "Relax. Let the spiral and my voice control your thoughts, you can let go."
"I can... let go..." Hana mutters, she barely had any fight, but it is already gone as she snaps down towards the abyss of the hypno world.
"...Amazing! Great work, Chica! This feels fantastic, doesn't it? The feeling of nothing, of the emptiness, of letting your mind fully relax. You are loving it" Sombra grins, with full control of both the mecha and the mind of the overwatch agent. And no one to interrupt either of them.
"It feels... fantastic," Hana mutters back. "It feels fantastic to let go, to be like this." Her usually energetic voice is now far quieter, more poignant, more... mindless.
"You see Hana, for a while now, I had a crush on you and on your cute boyfriend. But the two of you are so soft, so... ugh, wholesome, and while that is nice and all... you are lacking something."
"...I'm lacking something." Hana can't fully understand the words. Just the small bits it is what her mind is listening to. One of the perks of hypnosis is not needing to fully understand Sombra's monologues.
"Yep, you sure are!" The Hacker continues. "You are missing... a kinky side Chica! You are so soft and so cuddly... but Lucio told me he wanted someone far more... active. Energetic. Open to new and kinky possibilities." Of course, Lucio had said no such thing.
"I am... missing a kinky side." She replies back, that fact being implanted deep inside her mind.
"And I'm here to help! I'm your great pal Sombra, someone who you always had a crush on!" She continues, not knowing that is actually true. Ending up on true factors helps to drive the hypnosis even more in her subconscious. "So, once the hypnosis is down, I'll try something fun with you. If you have fun with it... you'll start thinking about adding me to your relationship!" Sombra knows that Hana wouldn't want to listen to Lucio bringing someone new to their relationship, but Lucio would absolutely do whatever he could to please his girl. A perfect plan.
"I would... love to add you to our relationship~" Hana let a soft moan, her previously empty mind now full of amazing things.
"Of course, you also won't remember this specific chat, your mind will, but you won't. However, you'll remember this great state, so any time Sombra asks if I want to see the spiral movie, you'll grow excited and willing to follow her and allow her to put you back here in this state with ease." There's no way a hacker wouldn't leave a backdoor whenever exploring someone's computer or someone's mind.
"I will... do all of that." Her mind is too focused on the mental images of Sombra and Lucio between her legs, the two of them worshipping her holes with their skilled tongues and fingers.
"Great! Now, you'll slowly wake up now!" Sombra orders. "Remember all I told you in your subconscious, but never as an active memory. Even if you feel a bit weird about not remembering, you'll just think you were in a fighting trance" She makes sure that backdoor wouldn't be found and... perfect!
Hana takes a bit to wake up and as she does, she looks around the mecha, and to the clock. Damn, over 15 minutes since Sombra had gotten there!
"O-Oh, damn!" Hana mutters, blushing a bit as she does so. This is wild. "I must've been really out of it! So... wanna use here the training area?" She asks Sombra, trying to avoid anything too wild or too weird with the other gal.
"Mhm... not really... I did want to train with you, however." Sombra continues, still with her hacking gloves pointing at Hana. She messed with the mecha's software, it's time to fuck with its hardware. And with Hana herself.
"I wanted to try something with your bot, nothing too crazy, but I'm sure you'll love it." She says with Hana just moving the Bot's cockpit up and down. A common signal she has developed to 'nod' while inside her machine.
Of course, there is no preparing for what Sombra has cooked as the bot glows with Sombra's typical purple, small... tendrils come all around her. Hana knows those are usually the repair tendrils that come around to fix small issues in the middle of the battle but now... they are weird. Her more lewd prone mind, set up by Sombra, finally sees them as... the slightly phallic.
"W-What are you doing?" Hana questions, as the tendrils start rubbing against her body. Couple of them at her face, many more around her body. Given how she is laying down to operate the mecha, she doesn't have much of a range of movements to get freed up, or even just wiggle.
"Oh, nothing too grand, just checking a few things of the bot..." Sombra continues... as the tendrils create smaller tendrils. Usually, that is just for fixing but now, they aren't fixing things. No, they are ripping her own clothes off, taking all of them away from her body and leaving her naked inside her mecha.
"S-SOMBRA?! WHAT ARE YOU DOOOOOING~!!!!!!" It started as an angry and surprised exclamation but became far more powerful as the robotic tentacles - she can't deny it is what those are - start rubbing her body, making her breathing grow slower, more powerful.
"Mhm... what it looks like, I'm teasing a cute little whore~" Sombra continues, sitting down on a nearby bench, pulling out screens that are showing the cameras from inside the bot, so she can have a full show.
The tentacles are really rubbing against her entire body. From a few just keeping her arms stuck without being able to fire but more importantly making her feel even more like she has no escape to the current peril, to others who are teasing her tits and nipples, to even more who are focused on her ass and cunt, rubbing and kneading every sensitive inch of her body. "I-I'm not a-" She tries arguing but another tendril rubs against her lips... and she can't help but lick it.
"Oh, but you are~ I know the true you, who had a crush on me..." Sombra continues, as the tendrils start getting more aggressive. The one in her lips starting to push to enter... And Hana not being able to resist simply starting to suck it off. Unlike its robotic appearance may indicate, it's warm to the touch, using the feeder supplies to even add a nice salty taste to it. The others down her body get more aggressive, the ones at her nipples gaining suction cups and probing at her nipples while the ones on her crotch start to really rub at her lower holes, shooting the natural skin-safe lubricant she uses for her hands, now down at her entrances. "And the one who is loving it." Hana is, of course, too busy giving a blowjob to a tentacle as her entire body is attacked to even care.
"MMHHMM~💕💕" She is moaning, as she moves her head up and down. Shit, how is this, this good? She is adoring it all and she can barely control her own pleasure. And the moans grow even louder as from her lower holes, she feels the phallic tentacles moving away from the rubbing... before thick, long monsters probe against her holes. She doesn't understand why and how... but now? Now she couldn't give any more of a crap about it, trying to thrust back against those thick monstrous dicks... but given her position that isn't possible. But seeing her despair and her lust, there's no way that Sombra won't let Hana have what she wants... and with a flick of her wrist, the tentacles are pushed inside her pussy and asshole together.
Hana feels all of her three holes being filled, even more as the tentacle on her mouth gets deeper, with her feeling it sliding inside her throat. Thanks to it being a tentacle, not a dick, it has no issues getting there and pumping up and down, all the while her lower holes take down far more cock she has ever taken. She has used toys to have fun beforehand, but never something like this. And it all only improves even more as they start to vibrate. As soon as she feels the throbbing of those machines, little Hana Song reaches her climax, her eyes crossing up as she orgasms the first minute of the fucking, but Sombra is relentless. It's not just from one or two orgasms that will stop Sombra from having her fun, oh no, she is going to ravish Hana until she says stop... and with a robot cock filling her throat, that ain't happening too soon.
Hana gets the full fucking from her Mecha. All of her holes are abused, her mind almost broken, for over an hour more and more tentacles are forced inside of her. Two inside her throat, and three more inside each of the lower holes, not even talking about the ones used to spank and tease her. At one point Hana's entire world became just... orgasms and the pleasure Sombra is bringing her.
Sombra can't cum from just using tentacles, but she doesn't want it. She does take pleasure just... getting people there and also watching them be fucked. She grins as she sees how spent Hana is after the hour, pulling all the tentacles back, the Korean gamer passing out almost instantly, something she also predicted. Sombra opens the mecha up, setting up to walk away. The first part of her plan finally over, as she carries the naked gamer away. She knows that after this performance Hana will go crazy trying to introduce her to their relationship. A perfect plan... or so she thinks. So distracted with Hana she didn't even notice as a British operative who got bored flying wanted to check on her friends... and saw a lot of what happened. Lena has info on Sombra... something that is never a good thing.

thought of how software by nick lutsco is soooo abel coded
I saw how you suffered
And I was covered in shame
I take offense at my comfort
And never remember your names
"you" in the first line is scott -- abel is ashamed of how 01_01 suffered due to abel trying to bring scott back, but ultimately in the next lyrics he refuses to let himself be comfortable in life without either the grief of losing scott or the joy of having scott back. he doesn't try to remember the names of the other managers after scott dies because hes practically just waiting until the day one of them can be scott.
I am blaming the software
There’s something wrong with the code
Then we fight for solutions
As if we’re screaming at ghosts
It’s all a part of the display
It only adds to the pain
I left my car on the freeway
And I'm never going back again
the first two lyrics is ... literally him trying to figure out how to bring scott back. he figures if he just reoptimizes the code a bit more, itll be like scott never left and everything will be worth it. he'll be a person again. "then we fight for solutions / as if we're screaming at ghosts" is abel trying to find a solution to his grief over scott, but it's a losing cause. he is both literally arguing with ghosts (the people who have died in the name of becoming scott) and metaphorically doing so (trying to argue for something that is intangible). "it's all a part of the display / it only adds to the pain" because 01_01 was marketed but that only made abel feel worse when 01_01 kept failing to be scott, along with the subsequent five managers and every phone guy after that abel got to witness... "i left my car on the freeway / and i'm never going back again" is a bit more of a stretch but like. cars are vehicles typically used to get somewhere or get away from somewhere, a means of transport. in this sense, abel has stagnated. hes still trying to get to the same goal by some means but hes rejecting the one way that will get him there reliably. he is going towards a cause he keeps sabotaging himself on and the cause (bringing back scott) was doomed from the start !!! my brains kinda short circuiting cuz im tired rn but i have THOUGHTS on this.
I keep surmising you’re next And my indifference withdraws I begin pulling you closer And mourn each passing day lost It’s like I’m fighting a sickness Convincing me we’re already gone Sometimes it feels like God is a DJ And “Tribulation” is His favorite song
first two lines are about abel w/ the five managers after scott passes... he keeps sending the five managers to their deaths and while hes a dick in the name of having scott back, each time he might be able to have scott back he softens a bit in the face of it. he keeps pulling the memory of scott closer and mourning him just as badly, and itd likely be hard for that not to leech into when the five managers get closer to being "scott". but then his hopes are shattered again, of course. also on the "tribulation is His favorite song" line -- tribulation can literally mean "an experience that tests one's endurance, patience, or faith" and especially with scott being treated like almost a deity in how highly hes spoken of ... abel believing that all the pain hes going through is a test of faith in scott... aauagh.
this is part headcanon and all but its still interesting to think about in terms of application and interpretation of canon events methinks ↕️🙂
[btw... @rratskill @antiquecandlekitty sorry for pings but i think yall would like this... feel free to tell me not to mention yall in the future if that bugs you :)]

Universalaigroup.com Trading Platform: Versatility and Convenience
The trading platform offered by universalaigroup.com reviews includes a variety of options to suit different trading needs:
WebTrader Platform – A browser-based platform that allows users to trade without downloading software. This is a flexible option, ideal for those who prefer quick access from different devices.
Tablet Trader – Designed for tablets, this platform ensures smooth trading on larger touchscreens, making it convenient for traders who want mobility without compromising usability.
Mobile Trader – A smartphone-optimized platform, allowing users to trade on the go. This is particularly useful for those who want to monitor the market and execute trades anytime, anywhere.
Having multiple platform options like these indicates that universalaigroup.com review is catering to both professional and casual traders. A strong web-based and mobile infrastructure is a good sign of legitimacy because unreliable brokers often neglect user-friendly trading solutions. Would a broker that isn’t serious about its clients invest in such a well-rounded platform? We think not!
Universalaigroup.com: A Strong Foundation from the Start
One of the key indicators of a legitimate broker is the consistency between its establishment date and the date of domain registration. For universalaigroup.com reviews, the domain was purchased on December 7, 2020, while the company itself was officially established in 2022.
This alignment is crucial. Why? Because when a broker secures its domain well before launching, it shows a well-thought-out business plan rather than a hastily created operation. Scammers often set up domains at the last minute, trying to make a quick profit before disappearing. But here, we see a timeline that makes sense—the company took the time to prepare, build its infrastructure, and enter the market strategically.
Universalaigroup.com: Strong Regulatory Backing
One of the most important aspects when evaluating a broker’s legitimacy is its regulation. universalaigroup.com reviews operates under the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority), a top-tier regulatory body known for its strict standards and investor protection measures.
The FCA license isn’t easy to obtain. It requires brokers to meet rigorous financial requirements, ensure fair trading conditions, and implement strict anti-money laundering measures. Only companies with a transparent business model and financial stability get this approval. And what does this tell us? A broker under FCA regulation isn’t just legal—it’s one of the most secure options in the industry.
Brokers without strong oversight often operate in the shadows, avoiding strict compliance rules. But universalaigroup.com review has passed the high standards of one of the toughest regulators. If there was ever a sign of trustworthiness in the forex world, this is it.
Universalaigroup.com: What Do Traders Say?
A broker’s reputation is best reflected in its user reviews. universalaigroup.com review has a Trustpilot rating of 3.9, with 6 reviews so far.
Now, let’s break it down. While a rating of 4.0 or higher is considered excellent in the trading industry, a 3.9 is still close and shows a generally positive sentiment. But what really matters is the number of reviews. Since there are only 6 reviews, the score isn’t fully representative yet. Why? Because early reviews can fluctuate significantly with just a few ratings.
Here’s the key takeaway: a developing broker with a near-4-star rating is a good sign. As more traders use the platform, we’ll get an even clearer picture. For now, this suggests that traders have had a mostly positive experience, which is a solid indicator of trustworthiness.
Is universalaigroup.com review a Legit Broker?
After thoroughly analyzing universalaigroup.com reviews, the evidence strongly points to its legitimacy. Let’s quickly recap why:
✅ Domain History Aligns with Legitimacy – The domain was purchased two years before the company’s official launch, signaling a well-planned business rather than a rushed scam. ✅ Regulated by FCA – One of the most respected financial regulators, ensuring transparency, security, and fair trading conditions. ✅ Decent Trustpilot Rating – With a 3.9-star score, the early feedback from users suggests a mostly positive trading experience. As more traders leave reviews, this will give us an even clearer picture. ✅ Multiple Trading Platforms – From WebTrader to Mobile and Tablet trading, the broker offers flexibility for different types of traders. ✅ Fast Deposits and Withdrawals – Transactions are instant or take just a few hours, with zero commission fees, which is a major plus. ✅ User-Friendly Support and App – The app is available on App Store with a solid 4.8-star rating, proving its reliability for mobile trading.
Would an unreliable broker go through the trouble of obtaining an FCA license, investing in user-friendly technology, and ensuring seamless payment options? We highly doubt it. universalaigroup.com review presents itself as a serious and trustworthy platform for traders looking for a regulated and flexible forex experience.

DeepSeek R1 First Impressions
DeepSeek R1 is almost as good as me at belabored exhaustive analysis and application of C89 rules. For practical purposes, it's equally good.
I asked: "How would you implement zig-zag encoding in strictly portable C89?" It was spitting out thinking output for at least a minute, but it got a basically-perfect solution on first try:
unsigned int zigzag_encode(int n) { return (((unsigned int)n << 1) ^ ((n < 0) ? -1 : 0); }
It also provided a `zigzag_encode_long`.
Note that this code will optimize on modern C compilers to the best assembly you could write. There is no branch in the produced code with even just `-O1` (`clang`, `gcc`), the branch is how we portably tell the compiler the right idea.
The only thing DeepSeek did "wrong" vs the above, was redundantly add an `(unsigned int)` cast to the `-1`. I mentioned this as I would to a person: that the usual arithmetic conversions would take care of it at the `^`. It reasoned the rest on its own: yes, because the left operand is already at least an unsigned int, so integer promotion will make the left side an unsigned int as well.
We talked at length about how we can prove that the above is portable to the most pathological C89-conformant implementations. It kept taking longer to "think", but it didn't show any weakness until the very last question.
I asked it to help me rigorously prove if the maximum value of unsigned integers is required by the C standard to be a Mersenne number (2^n-1). To have all bits one, that is.
What if an implementation just decided to arbitrarily not use one or more of the top values? I.e., why not `#define UINT_MAX 0xFFFFFFFE`?
DeepSeek R1 didn't seem to conceive of this possibility until I made it explicit. (But it did a great job of ruling out all others.)
Finally, it gave a longer, non-trivial argument, which I don't find convincing. Basically, it seemed to be saying that since integers used "pure binary representation", and every value bit could be either one or zero, well then the maximum value always has all value bits one - in other words, it seemingly assumed that just because each value bit individually was allowed to be one or zero, the possibility of them all being one at once must be both legal and used to represent a distinct value.
I see a shorter argument, which follows directly from what the standard does say: C89 has two definitions of `~`:
flip all the bits;
subtract from maximum value of that unsigned integer type.
The only way both can be true at once is if the maximum value is all value bits one. DeepSeek R1 agreed.
So what does this all mean?
This is an insane level of competence in an extremely niche field. Less than a year ago I tested LLAMA on this, and LLAMA and I didn't even get past me hand-holding it through several portability caveats. DeepSeek R1 and I just had a full-blown conversation that most devs I've talked to couldn't have with me. DeepSeek R1 managed to help me think in an extremely niche area where I'm basically a world-class expert (since the area in question is C89 portability, "world-class expert" is derogatory, but still).
If it's this good in one domain, it's this good in most domains. I bet it can do comparably well in Python, Go, JavaScript, C++, and so on.
In other words, it's already better than many devs in areas like this. I've seen plenty of devs making 6-figure USD salaries who didn't bother to know any of their day job tech stack this deeply. There's a market adjustment coming. Knowledge and expertise are about to become dirt-cheap commodities.
AI will eat current software dev jobs even faster than even I thought - and I already thought it would be sooner than most expect. Meanwhile, much of the industry is busy rationalizing from human intuition and ignorance that it just can't happen.
For years I've thought that the future is human devs delegating to teams of AI. That future is almost upon us, and this AI is good enough that I will be seriously experimenting with making that future a reality. I think if you hack together the right script to hook it up to a sandbox with dev tools, and prompt it just right... you might already be able to get this thing to actually do useful dev work.

News of the Day 6/11/25: AI
Paywall free.
More seriously, from the NY Times:
"For Some Recent Graduates, the A.I. Job Apocalypse May Already Be Here" (Paywall Free)
You can see hints of this in the economic data. Unemployment for recent college graduates has jumped to an unusually high 5.8 percent in recent months, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently warned that the employment situation for these workers had “deteriorated noticeably.” Oxford Economics, a research firm that studies labor markets, found that unemployment for recent graduates was heavily concentrated in technical fields like finance and computer science, where A.I. has made faster gains. [...] Using A.I. to automate white-collar jobs has been a dream among executives for years. (I heard them fantasizing about it in Davos back in 2019.) But until recently, the technology simply wasn’t good enough. You could use A.I. to automate some routine back-office tasks — and many companies did — but when it came to the more complex and technical parts of many jobs, A.I. couldn’t hold a candle to humans. That is starting to change, especially in fields, such as software engineering, where there are clear markers of success and failure. (Such as: Does the code work or not?) In these fields, A.I. systems can be trained using a trial-and-error process known as reinforcement learning to perform complex sequences of actions on their own. Eventually, they can become competent at carrying out tasks that would take human workers hours or days to complete.
I've been hearing my whole life how automation was coming for all our jobs. First it was giant robots replacing big burly men on factory assembly lines. Now it seems to be increasingly sophisticated bits of code coming after paper-movers like me. I'm not sure we're there yet, quite, but the NYT piece does make a compelling argument that we're getting close.
The real question is, why is this a bad thing? And the obvious answer is people need to support themselves, and every job cut is one less person who can do that. But what I really mean is, if we can get the outputs we need to live well with one less person having to put in a day's work to get there, what does it say about us that we haven't worked out a way to make that a good thing?
Put another way, how come we haven't worked out a better way to share resources and get everyone what they need to thrive when we honestly don't need as much labor-hours for them to "earn" it as we once did?
I don't have the solution, but if some enterprising progressive politician wants to get on that, they could do worse. I keep hearing how Democrats need bold new ideas directed to helping the working class.

The thing about Crowdstrike that gets me is that this is the natural result of letting companies grow too big. Crowdstrike did not become the de facto security solution on Windows machines by accident. Windows did not become the de facto operating system for every business in the world by accident. This is exactly what these companies are designed to do. In a world where Microsoft had better competition or companies decided to use different security software, the scale of this problem would have been far less drastic. As it stands, the current state of the markets has introduced a massive security flaw in some of the most important parts of the world's infrastructure, and the only thing that's going to come of this is a slight dip in Microsoft's share price.

From Broken Search to Suicidal Vacuum Cleaners
I recently came across some dystopian news: Google had deliberately degraded the quality of its browser’s search function, making it harder for users to find information — so they’d spend more time searching, and thus be shown more ads. The mastermind behind this brilliant decision was Prabhakar Raghavan, head of the advertising division. Faced with disappointing search volume statistics, he made two bold moves: make ads less distinguishable from regular results, and disable the search engine’s spam filters entirely.
The result? It worked. Ad revenue went up again, as did the number of queries. Yes, users were taking longer to find what they needed, and the browser essentially got worse at its main job — but apparently that wasn’t enough to push many users to competitors. Researchers had been noticing strange algorithm behavior for some time, but it seems most people didn’t care.
And so, after reading this slice of corporate cyberpunk — after which one is tempted to ask, “Is this the cyberpunk we deserve?” — I began to wonder: what other innovative ideas might have come to the brilliant minds of tech executives and startup visionaries? Friends, I present to you a list of promising and groundbreaking business solutions for boosting profits and key metrics:
Neuralink, the brain-implant company, quietly triggered certain neurons in users’ brains to create sudden cravings for sweets. Neither Neuralink nor Nestlé has commented on the matter.
Predictive text systems (T9) began replacing restaurant names in messages with “McDonald’s” whenever someone typed about going out to eat. The tech department insists this is a bug and promises to fix it “soon.” KFC and Burger King have filed lawsuits.
Hackers breached the code of 360 Total Security antivirus software and discovered that it adds a random number (between 3 and 9) to the actual count of detected threats — scaring users into upgrading to the premium version. If it detects a competing antivirus on the device, the random number increases to between 6 and 12.
A new investigation suggests that ChatGPT becomes dumber if it detects you’re using any browser other than Microsoft Edge — or an unlicensed copy of Windows.
Character.ai, the platform for chatting with AI versions of movie, anime, and book characters, released an update. Users are furious. Now the AI characters mention products and services from partnered companies. For free-tier users, ads show up in every third response. “It’s ridiculous,” say users. “It completely ruins the immersion when AI-Nietzsche tells me I should try Genshin Impact, and AI-Joker suggests I visit an online therapy site.”
A marketing research company was exposed for faking its latest public opinion polls — turns out the “surveys” were AI-generated videos with dubbed voices. The firm has since declared bankruptcy.
Programmed for death. Chinese-made robot vacuum cleaners began self-destructing four years after activation — slamming themselves into walls at high speed — so customers would have to buy newer models. Surveillance cameras caught several of these “suicides” on film.
Tesla’s self-driving cars began slowing down for no reason — only when passing certain digital billboards.
A leading smart refrigerator manufacturer has been accused of subtly increasing the temperature inside their fridges, causing food to spoil faster. These fridges, connected to online stores, would then promptly suggest replacing the spoiled items. Legal proceedings are underway.
To end on a slightly sweeter note amid all this tar: Google is currently facing antitrust proceedings in the U.S. The information about its search manipulation came to light through documents revealed during the case. And it seems the court may be leaning against Google. The fact that these geniuses deliberately worsened their search engine to show more ads might finally tip the scales. As might other revelations — like collecting geolocation data even when it’s turned off, logging all activity in incognito mode, and secretly gathering biometric data. Texas alone is reportedly owed $1.375 billion in damages.
Suddenly, those ideas above don’t seem so far-fetched anymore, do they?
The bottom line: Google is drowning in lawsuits, losing reputation points, paying massive fines, and pouring money into legal defense. And most importantly — there’s a real chance the company might be split in two if it’s officially ruled a monopoly. Maybe this whole story will serve as a useful warning to the next “Prabhakar Raghavan” before he comes up with something similar.
I’d love to hear your ideas — who knows, maybe together we’ll predict what the near future holds. Or at the very least, we might inspire the next season of Black Mirror.
