Virtual Personal Assistants

Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, Google Now, Microsoft's Cortana are some of the common examples of virtual personal assistants. These applications assist in finding information, when asked over voice. All that is needed is activating them and asking questions like for example “Siri, What are my appointments for today?”, “Alexa, What are the flights from Bangalore to New York”. For answering such queries, the application looks out for the information, recalls your previous queries, and accesses other resources to collect relevant information. You can even tell these assistants to do certain tasks like “Alexa, Set an alarm for 5.30 AM tomorrow morning”, “Siri, Remind me to visit Passport office tomorrow at 10.30 am without fail”.

Google Assistant is launching its first celebrity voice cameo today, starting with the silky-smooth voice of John Legend. For a limited time, the Grammy-winning artist will sing “Happy Birthday” to you, tell you the weather, and answer questions like “Who is Chrissy Teigen?” everywhere Google Assistant is available, including iOS and Android devices. John Legend is one of six new Google Assistant voices that were previewed at Google I/O 2018 where the company gave a preview of its speech synthesis model WaveNet. Siri

We kunnen de virtuele assistent in de film linken aan Siri dat in 2011 werd geïntroduceerd door Apple via de iOS 5 (Murph, 2011). Aan Siri kan je eenvoudige dingen vragen zoals het weerbericht opvragen, een timer zetten, apps openen, restaurants opzoeken en dergelijke meer (Apple Inc). Je kan Siri ook kennisvragen stellen die de informatie haalt via Google. Siri werkt met voice recognition, een herkenner dat op je iPhone geïnstalleerd is communiceert dan met een server in de cloud en bepaald dan of de opdracht het best lokaal kan afgehandeld worden (bv: als je Siri vraagt om een liedje te laten afspelen) of dat deze best verbinding maakt met een ander netwerk voor verdere assistentie. De “geluiden” die je uitspreekt worden begrepen als klinkers en medeklinkers. Zo worden letters, en uiteindelijk woorden gevormd. De computer gaat dan door een soort lijst vol met interpretaties voor wat de volgorde van de woorden zou kunnen betekenen. De computer kan dan vernemen wat jouw bedoelde boodschap is (bv: een liedje afspelen in je muziekbibliotheek) en de opdracht doorvoeren (Nusca, 2011). De nieuwe functie “Hey Siri” maakt het bovendien mogelijk dat men Siri kan gebruiken zonder op de homeknop te drukken. Je zegt dan “Hey Siri” gevolgd door de opdracht die je Siri wil laten uitvoeren (iCulture).

Hoewel Siri een leuke en bovendien ook handige tool is, heeft het zijn imperfecties en beperkingen. Om je virtuele assistent te activeren moet je WiFi hebben, want Siri werkt niet zonder verbinding met het internet. Daarbij, kan het niet op al je vragen een antwoord vinden (bv: “Siri, hoe zie ik er vandaag uit?” of “Wat is het populairst liedje in België vandaag?” ) en moet je jezelf soms herhalen of je zin herformuleren, wat bij de operating system in Her niet het geval was (Wollerton, 2018).

Hoewel Siri en de OS in de film in bepaalde mate gelijkaardige functies hebben kunnen we ze toch niet met elkaar vergelijken. Hoewel ze allebei virtuele assistenten zijn, is OS Samantha geavanceerder en kortom, slimmer.

Google Assistant

Google Assistant is ook een virtuele assistent en werd ontwikkeld door Google. Eigenlijk werkt Google Assistant net als Siri. De digitale persoonlijke assistent werd gelanceerd in mei 2016 en maakte deel uit van de app Allo, een chatapp van Google (Google Allo). Via de app Allo kan je de Google Assistent vragen stellen en opdrachten geven, zoals een wekker zetten om 08:30. Je kan dus één-op-één chatten met je virtuele assistent, dit is wat Google Assistant onderscheidt van Siri. Uiteraard kan men ook een “gesprek” voeren, waarbij er gebruik wordt gemaakt van een NLP (Natural Language Processing) algoritme (Purewal, 2016). Net als Siri heb je nu ook de functie “Ok Google”, waardoor je je virtuele assistent kan activeren zonder op de home button te drukken (Google Assistant Help)

Google Assistant’s (artificiële) intelligentie is wel geavanceerder dan Siri omdat hoe meer je je assistent gebruikt hoe slimmer het wordt. Het systeem onthoudt informatie uit eerdere gesprekken. Deze eigenschap heet reinforcement learning: de computer leert bij naarmate het opdrachten uitvoert en meer gebruikt wordt (Purewal, 2016).

Daarbij, kan men de app downloaden op elke smartphone (Apple, Android, LG, …). Daarbovenop, kunnen we Google Assistant linken aan Google Home, dit is een “slimme” speaker waarmee de gebruikers spraakopdrachten mee kunnen uitvoeren. De gebruikers kunnen vragen dat er muziek wordt afgespeeld uit de luidsprekers, de actualiteit opvragen en zelfs films en series streamen via je televisie (die uiteraard geconnecteerd is aan je Google Home). Google Assistent is dus geïntegreerd in de Google Home (Google Home)

Amazon Alexa

Alexa is de virtuele assistent die ontwikkeld werd door Amazon en die eerst werd gebruikt via Amazon Echo. Echo is een “smart” of slimme luidspreker dat muziek kan afspelen maar dus ook, verbonden met de AI assistent Alexa, geschikt is voor spraakinteracties. Aan Alexa kan je het weer opvragen, alarmen instellen en informatie vragen. Naast het vragen naar muziek kan Alexa je ook helpen met een berekening (“Alexa, wat is 120 maal 90?”) of peilen naar algemene kennis (“Alexa, wie was de regisseur voor Back To The Future?”) (Clauser, 2018). De spraakservice van Amazon is beschikbaar op verschillende apparaten van Amazon maar kan ook verbonden zijn aan apparaten van derden. Alexa kan dus verschillende “smart” apparaten besturen (Amazon Alexa). Je kan het apparaat connecteren met je oven of zelfs met je koffiemachine (“Alexa, vraag het Home Connect-koffiezetapparaat om een latte te maken”). Er is bovendien ook geen activeringsknop om je virtuele assistent te activeren, het trigger-woord “Alexa” gevolgd door je commando zal de service aanwakkeren (Home Connect).

Van alle bovenstaande besproken virtuele assistenten (Siri, Google Assistant, …) sluit Alexa zich het dichts aan bij de OS in de film Her.
