"The true source of the antipathy between [Peter Sinfield and Robert Fripp] is hard to pinpoint but it's likely that Fripp's profound dislike of Sinfield's lyrics for much of the album poisoned the water."
"Long after its release, the guitarist famously argued that Lizard was essentially unlistenable, a conclusion he'd arrived at due to a dislike of the original mix and the growing personal enmity directed at him from both Haskell and Sinfield during recording."

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “You Won’t Be Seeing Me Anymore” by Tim (a.k.a. Chris) Andrews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8bhFTWVNVU  This was recorded in London, but it has a folk-pop California sound that could’ve come from Laurel Canyon or San Francisco circa 1967 (when this song was made). On a cosmic jukebox this track would play next to It’s A Beautiful Day (“White Bird”) and Love. It was written by Gordon Haskell, Tim/Chris Andrews’s former bandmate from Fleur de Lys. Gordon is often noted for his role in an early incarnation of King Crimson, but beyond that he was a prolific singer-songwriter who, after years as a “starving folksinger,” found success with the hit single “How Wonderful You Are” and the platinum album HARRY’S BAR.
The lyrics are about seasonal love, coming from a young man who travels for a long time and leaves his troubled sweetheart behind. The track (w/Gordon on bass and guitar) was produced by Paul Clay (Ace Kefford, Sharon Tandy, early Yes) and Mike Noble (Joan Armatrading, Fleur de Lys, John Kongos). It was the B-side of “Sad Simon Lives Again,” Tim’s first solo single after he’d signed with renowned producer, promoter, and music executive Tony Hall (who’d plugged The Beatles, Carmen McRae, and later inked Black Sabbath’s first record deal). Tim later reverted to his real name Chris and went on as a solo act and a collaborator with Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees).

King Crimson of 1970 Meets King Crimson of 1981 to Create 2022 Mashup
Take a bit of “Cadence and Cascade,” sprinkle liberally over “Matte Kudasai” and - voilà! - “Cadence Kudasai.”
It’s the latest bit of studio trickery in King Crimson’s occasional series of such things and finds Mel Collins and Gordon Haskel - recorded in 1970 - spliced into a 1981 take featuring Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Bill Buford and Robert Fripp - to create an idea “of what ’80s KC might have sounded like had a woodwind player been invited to join,” as the band put it in a statement accompanying the audio.
The result is a rueful dose of what might have been as the group is earthier, more true to its beginnings in this guise, than much of its studio output from the MTV decade turned out to be.
You can’t go back in time. Thankfully, you can go back in the studio - this clip is an aural gem.

Now I’m on a trip down memory lane. Stephen McHattie and Lance Henrickson also both guest starred as villains on the 1980s TV series, Beauty and the Beast, which is the show that dropped me down the fanficcing rabbit hole for the first time.

Beauty and the Beast also had several well-known names on their writing/producing staff, including George R.R. Martin who would, not long after his stint on BatB ended, go on to write the first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones. Also the writing/producing team of Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, who would soon after be hired by Chris Carter to work on TXF.
Jay Acovone played the recurring role of Joe Maxwell on BatB and would later play Detective Curtis on TXF episode Demons and later go on to play Duffy Haskell in the 8th season. Not looking up the episode names cuz, nope.

"Talking to Disc's David Hughes in 1970, Fripp said: "There were only ever a few people in the whole school I got on with. Ever since the age of ten I've been very much on my own - and of course at that age I was aware of it and upset. I suppose when you're young you think it's a fault not having friends."
"His lack of respect for the school regime and some of the lessons goaded Fripp into precocious displays of protest, such as eating his lunch in class, and quick-fire one-liners such as: "If you had half the intelligence of a pea, you'd be twice what you are now.""
"Such behavior was outrageously hilarious to his classmates and endeared him most notably to Gordon Haskell. Haskell was illegitimate, so perhaps a shared sense of outsiderdom drew the pair together. Haskell visited the Fripp household on occasion but found it unusual. "I spent a lot of time with him and it was a strange life. His mother and father didn't seem to share their life with him and so he was left to his own devices, studying and left in his own little cocoon.""

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Hold On” by Rupert’s People https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbrxbXH5bs. Rupert’s People was a “made in the studio” band formed around members of Fleur de Lys. In 1967, Rod Lynton was a “rising star” songwriter, so managers and record companies got behind him to record his songs by using bands-for-hire—in this case it was Fleur de Lys with Chris Andrews on lead vocals. To avoid confusion over the Fleur de Lys “brand,” the band re-named themselves “Rupert’s People.” “Hold On” was the B-side to the single Rupert’s People “Reflections on Charles Brown,” which received positive response in 10 countries. However, many said “Hold On” is the stronger track, amped up with muscular organ by Pete Solley (future sideman w/Eric Clapton, Al Stewart, Whitesnake, etc.) and edgy lead guitar by Phil Sawyer. The song was co-written with bassist Gordon Haskell (later of “Harry’s Bar” and King Crimson) and guitar hero Bryn Haworth (not credited on the record label). On a cosmic jukebox “Hold On” plays next to the soulful hard-edged blues-rock fusions of Spencer Davis Group, Pretty Things, and Brian Auger & The Trinity.
Lynton went on to collaborate with John Lennon, and Rupert’s People tracks have been reissued on soundtracks and compilations celebrating the best of 60s British rock. Fleur de Lys became a launching pad for several careers, with Chris Andrews going on as a solo act and collaborator with Roger Daltrey, David Essex, Davy Jones (Monkees), and other notables. This video was made in 2023 with remastered audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbrxbXH5bs

Excel is the Most Functional of Programming Languages w/ Simon Peyton Jones
On today’s episode, we sit down with educator, researcher, and all-around information guru Simon Peyton Jones to learn all about programming languages and their impact on hardware, software, and research/development. Simon also brings some professional insight into Excel as a programing language. Oddly enough, around the time Rob met Simon, Rob began to think of Excel as a programming language. In order to be a language, the formulas have to deal with both space and time, so Excel formula language absolutely fits the bill. Just be careful how you code. On older systems, if you perform a VLOOKUP at the same time as a nested IF, it might disrupt the space-time continuum and bring about the blue screen of death!
As an engineering fellow at Epic Games, a researcher for Microsoft Research Cambridge, and a professor at Glasgow University, Simon also brings a unique perspective on changing the educational system to include base learning on computer science as part of general education. Not only did Simon step up and suggest change, but he also followed through and created a coalition to guide the program and ensure future expansion as needed. When Simon talks about research, people listen!
