the great nicobar serpent-eagle is (believed to be) the world’s smallest eagle species; their name comes from being endemic to the indian island of great nicobar. as their name implies, snakes are a large part of their diet; they primarily feed on reptiles such as snakes and lizards. due to their small range, they are threatened by habitat loss. typically, only one egg is laid per clutch; if two eggs are laid, then only one will be successfully raised.

Remember to read about the contestants before voting!
Dodo
The Dodo, is an extinct, fat little flightless bird from the island of Mauritius. Although it’s name is often used to call someone “dumb”, the dodo is actually quite smart! They are closely related to the Nicobar Pigeon, and were well adapted to an island that experienced a lot of hardships. Hardly a slow, dumb bird like we often think they were. Humans, who were the one of the factors to hunt them down to extinction, actually found dodos to not taste very good. But, they were large and could feed many people at once. Learn More!
Great Eared Nightjar
Often called a "little dragon", the Great Eared Nightjar is found in the forests of Southeast Asia. Not unlike the Tawny Frogmouth or Potoo, this fellow eats mainly bugs. However, they are often in motion when they are trying to catch their prey, which is a big difference from the Tawny Frogmouth and the Potoo. Learn More!

Excerpt: Tamil[b] (தமிழ், Tamiḻ, pronounced [t̪amiɻ] ) is a Dravidian language natively spoken by the Tamil people of South Asia. Tamil is an official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and union territory of Puducherry, and the sovereign nations of Sri Lanka and Singapore. Tamil is also spoken by significant minorities in the four other South Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is also spoken by the Tamil diaspora found in many countries. One of 22 scheduled languages in the Constitution of India, Tamil was the first to be classified as a classical language of India. Tamil is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world. A. K. Ramanujan described it as "the only language of contemporary India which is recognizably continuous with a classical past". The variety and quality of classical Tamil literature has led to it being described as "one of the great classical traditions and literatures of the world". Recorded Tamil literature has been documented for over 2000 years

It descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French evolved from Gallo-Romance, the Latin spoken in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul. Its closest relatives are the other langues d'oïl—languages historically spoken in northern France and in southern Belgium, which French (Francien) largely supplanted. French was also influenced by native Celtic languages of Northern Roman Gaul like Gallia Belgica and by the (Germanic) Frankish language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders. A French-speaking person or nation may be referred to as Francophone in both English and French. French is an official language in 27 countries and is spoken across all continents. French is also one of the most geographically widespread languages in the world, with about 50 countries and territories having it as a de jure or de facto official, administrative, or cultural language. French is also one of six official languages used in the United Nations

reading up a bit more on the plan that the indian gvmt has to build on (aka destroy the local flora and fauna of) the great nicobar island that has the potential to begin a genocide on the shompen people and endanger other indigenous peoples and it’s just so infuriating that we’re witnessing 3+ genocides right now and experts are warning about another. like i don’t have the words for how angering it is ESPECIALLY because the people in high places of power don’t fucking care to do anything about it. i’m hoping this plan won’t come to fruition but honestly i don’t have much or any faith in governments or organizations like the un to stop or prevent it anymore

Burnt Friedman - Hexenschuss - new album of electronic polyrhythms, also available as extended versions
Hexenschuss (Extended Versions) by Burnt Friedman
The vocabulary of modern ‘Western’ music or of the so–called Global North has finally been spelled out. The ever more hasty striving to move forward led to a music that is ‘starving among this embarrassment of riches’. In those days, the music that was oscillating in a state of “permanent obsolescence” — often in short cycles of a few months — and preserved as a sign of the times in musical codes, has gone in the completely opposite direction, into a state of obsolete permanence.
In this drive forward towards refining and expanding a catalogue of superlatives, a never changing, underlying, but underdeveloped isometric schema has irreversibly and imperceptibly cemented in the body. The corresponding theory – the persisting phantom terms of academia – seek to break free of its phenomena. In contrast to this, in the music beyond the 'Global North', a nature of 'polyrhythms’ is detected, or, in other words, every beat that can not be grasped easily must therefor be a polyrhythm and African in essence. Now, shift the focus away from the contrafactual cultural connotations of the record sleeve towards the animating principle of the music, the phenomenological vectors of rhythm and view ‘groove‘ as the intrinsic attribute of regular harmonic motion patterns. This formulaic, animating principle is solely based on the law of the octave (doubling and halving). It appears repetitive, or circular in nature as opposed to linear and progressive. Such a formula is derived from a recurrent, balanced body movement from which every impulse originates as something sensed, as opposed to being subject to will or notation. What sounds merely technical or sophisticated in theory turns out to be basal in practice. It can also be grasped as an energy structure. In other words, a controlled regular movement yields stable interrelated time intervals with the least expenditure of energy.
In 'grooving', or 'composing a guiding path' all those involved (sequencer, drummer, dancer, etc.) become attuned to one another in a resistance against arbitrary dictates such as cultural appropriation, man–made aesthetic framework or notions of folklore. Such a 'guiding path' seeks to dispense with taste as much as possible, ultimately in favour of an experience of harmonic accordance, strangeness, displacement and not least, freedom. (Burnt Friedman) In regard to the people depicted on the cover: The Andamanese are the indigenous peoples of the Andaman Islands, part of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands union territory in the southeastern part of the Bay of Bengal in Southeast Asia. They have lived in substantial isolation on the islands for thousands of years. Although the existence of the islands and their inhabitants was long known to maritime powers and traders of the South– and Southeast–Asia region, contact with these peoples was highly sporadic and very often hostile; as a result, almost nothing is recorded of them or their languages until the mid-18th century. Until this period, the Andamanese were preserved from outside influences by their fierce reaction to visitors, which included killing any shipwrecked foreigners, and by the remoteness of the islands. The various tribes and their mutually unintelligible languages thus are believed to have evolved on their own over millennia. Some of the tribe members were credited to having supernatural powers. They were called oko-pai-ad, which meant dreamer. They were thought to have an influence on the members of the tribe and would bring misfortune to those who did not believe in their abilities. When the British first established a colonial presence on the Andaman islands, there were an estimated 5,000 Great Andamanese living on Great Andaman and surrounding islands, comprising 10 distinct tribes with distinct but closely related languages. From the 1860s onwards, the British established a penal colony on the islands, which led to the subsequent arrival of mainland settlers and indentured labourers, mainly from the Indian subcontinent. This coincided with the massive population reduction of the Andamanese due to outside diseases, to a low of 19 individuals in 1961.

Video transcription: warning racism & discrimination. Indian settlers dressed as Indigenous Jarawa in blackface dance at the official opening of Andaman airport. The Indian government's racist attitude to Andaman and Nicobar Islands' tribes is a threat to their lands and survival - like the uncontacted Shompen people, who won't survive the Indian government's plan to turn their island into the "Hong Kong of India".
From Survival International:
The indigenous peoples of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India —including the Great Andamanese, Jarawa, Sentinelese and Shompen— have endured centuries of racism that has justified the theft of their land and their near-total annihilation. Indigenous peoples of India are still often treated with contempt, as racist displays like this video of Indian settlers wearing blackface shows. These attitudes continue to fuel land thefts today.
For example, the Indian government is set on using Indigenous land for development without consent. The Shompen who live on Great Nicobar Island are at risk of being wiped out if their forest is used for a mega-development project, which aims to settle over 650,000 people on the island— the equivalent of an 8,000% increase in population.
Without their forest, the Shompen, most of whom are uncontacted, could be totally wiped out.
More information on the Shompen, the Indian Government's mega-project for turning their island into a military, commercial and touristic base through ecocide and genocide, and a link to easily send a pre-written email to the government officials and companies involved here:
Some context to understand why Indian settlers are caricaturely dressed up as Jarawa people in this airport:
The Jarawa are a nomadic cultural group indigenous to the Andaman Islands, where nowadays indigenous peoples are outnumbered by settlers from India. Still, like most tribal peoples who live self-sufficiently on their ancestral lands, the Jarawa people thrive and their numbers are steadily growing. Research on their nutrition and health found that their nutrition is "optimal", in large part thanks to their deep knowledge of their natural surroundings (they have detailed knowledge of more than 150 plant and 350 animal species) and the well-being of the forests.
In the 1990s, the local Indian settler authorities revealed their long-term ‘master plan’ to settle the Jarawa in two villages with an economy based on fishery, suggesting that hunting and gathering could be their ‘sports’. This meant forcing the Jarawa, who are nomadic and get their food from hunting and gathering, to abandon their way of living. The plan was so prescriptive it even detailed what style of clothes the Jarawa should wear.
Forced settlement had been fatal for other tribes in the Andaman Islands, but a vigorous campaign brought success and in 2004 the authorities announced that the Jarawa would be able to choose their own future with minimal intervention. However, in the next years (most notably 2010), Indian settler authorities have again tried to force the Jarawa to abandon their way of life and become part of India's mainstream society. This pressure continues, including Indian MPs asking for residential schools to be created to take away Jarawa children from their families and strip them from their culture.
Indian government officials repeatedly refer to the Jarawa people as "primitive", "backwards" and "uncivilized".
Tribal peoples like the Jarawa are used as a tourist claim by Indian settlers, who organize "human safaris" for tourists to go see Jarawa people. Even though in 2002 India's Supreme Court ordered closing the highway that runs through Jarawa land, it's still open and used by thousands of outsiders who go watch them like they're wild animals in human safaris.
Outsiders, both local settlers and international poachers enter their rich forest reserve to steal the game the tribe needs to survive. Although in recent years many poachers have been arrested, none have been sentenced by the courts, despite the offence carrying a prison term of up to seven years.
Jarawa girls and women are sexually abused by poachers, settlers, bus drivers and others. Jarawa people report outsiders who get drunk on alcohol and high on marijuana going in Jarawa villages to rape Jarawa girls and women.

India's First Transhipment Port: Vizhinjam Port in Kerala
Tumblr media
India's first transhipment port, the Adani Group's Vizhinjam port in Kerala, has become operational, ending China's dominance in the maritime sector and reducing India's losses.
The port is strategically located at the southern tip of Kerala, near the border of Tamil Nadu and Kanyakumari.
The project was initiated in 2015 by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd.
It faced several challenges, including protests from religious groups in Kerala.
The port is now complete and operational.
Vizhinjam port is located at the southernmost tip of Kerala, India, which makes it a strategic location for ships traveling between the Suez Canal and the Malacca Strait.
This location advantage eliminates the need for ships to deviate from their course, saving time and fuel.
Vizhinjam port has the potential to become a major transhipment hub, similar to Singapore, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Busan, and Hong Kong.
The port's strategic location can significantly contribute to India's global sea trade.
India is now able to accommodate ultra-large container ships, which was not possible before.
The government's Maritime India Vision 2030 aims to develop world-class mega ports, transshipment hubs, and modernized infrastructure with an investment of 1.25 lakh crore.
India is positioning itself as an alternative manufacturing destination to China.
Efficient transportation plays a crucial role in manufacturing, and the lack of transshipment ports and large ports in India has increased logistics and shipping costs.
By developing these capabilities, India can reduce its logistic and shipping costs, making its goods more competitive in the global market.
Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to become India's premier mother port, surpassing even Singapore.
The port aims to handle 1 million containers annually, exceeding the capacity of Singapore's port.
The port incorporates advanced automation and technology, reducing turnaround time for loading and unloading ships.
The port's strategic location along the Malacca Strait and Suez Canal shipping routes makes it attractive to the world's largest container ships.
The international shipping route passes through the Indian Ocean, and 30% of global cargo traffic goes through this route.
India can benefit significantly by developing the Vizhinjam port, which has a natural channel of up to 24 meters below sea level, allowing large ships to enter.
India's Plan to Improve Port Infrastructure and Compete with China
India's plan to improve its infrastructure and compete with China includes developing its port infrastructure.
The first step in this plan is the construction of the Vizhinjam port, India's first deep-water port.
Other major projects include the Great Nicobar Project and the development of transshipment ports in the Andaman and Great Nicobar Islands.
A new port is being built near the Malacca Strait with an estimated cost of around 41,000 crores.
Eleven companies have expressed interest in building the port, which will have an ultimate capacity of 16 million containers per year.
The first phase of the port is expected to be completed by 2028 at a cost of 18,000 crores and will be able to handle over 4 million containers.
The Great Nicobar Project is also mentioned as another significant development in India's port infrastructure.
The Adani Group's development of the Vizhinjam port is considered a game-changer for India, as it is the country's largest port to date.

HMS Wasp - 1850-1869
Warship – 970 tons burden – 8 knots – 170 crew
Superficially similar to the other sloops discussed so far, the sixth HMS Wasp in fact boasted significant technological improvements that made her a far more capable ship. Her construction was part of a flurry of British shipbuilding spurred by a naval arms race with France during the 1840s, one which continued even after the February Revolution of 1848 effectively put a halt to French naval expansion. Originally intended as gun-vessels, Wasp (named after the sloop retired in 1846) and her sister ship Archer were ultimately designed as sloops, far-ranging weapons with which Britain might project force across its vast maritime empire.
The Wasp was a large ship for her rating, capable of acting at need as a fast supply ship or even a troop transport (she could carry 400 men over and above her crew). Capacious and ship-rigged with three masts, she was a far cry from the brig-sloops of the early 19th century and well suited to extended deployments – with one caveat. That relates to her alternative propulsion system, a screw propeller powered by a coal-fuelled steam engine. This was still novel technology at the time. Capable of providing 100 horsepower of thrust, the propeller allowed the Wasp to sail directly into the wind – providing exceptional agility – and to outrun just about any ship reliant solely on sail power. Early “screw” ships were made somewhat ungainly by this addition, but the Wasp saw little or no reduction in her performance. The only real drawback of the propeller system was that coal was at this point hard to come by outside Britain itself, limiting the use of the screw to critical moments. Unlike steam-powered paddles, a propeller also allowed the ship to employ traditional broadside firepower. The sting of this Wasp reflected a British move away from carronades and towards a smaller number of heavier guns: she carried ten (soon increased to twelve) 32-pounder cannon and two 64-pounders – guns with considerable range. With the screw, the Wasp could outrun anything she could not outfight, allowing her to operate independently in relative security.
The Wasp had a varied career, being stationed in the Mediterranean upon the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1853 and thus becoming part of the fleet which landed British forces in the Crimea and blockaded Sevastopol. It is unclear whether she directly took part in the bombardment of that city, but evidently it was decided that she was too light a ship to withstand the fire of Russian shore batteries. Her captain and some of her men disembarked to join the British army, while the Wasp herself returned to base at Malta. Most of her postings, however, were to join the naval campaign against the slave trade. Initially this meant service in the Atlantic, but in the 1860s she mostly patrolled the east coast of Africa. Here her screw was of great value in allowing her to run down nimble dhows in coastal waters, and the Wasp was able to liberate large numbers of people through capturing slavers. More generally she was used as a coercive tool of imperial rule, intimidating populations in the Nicobar Islands and Penang in 1867. She was finally retired in 1869.
