• its funny that he married a farmer because he is a germaphobe and absolutely hates the idea of doing anything remotely dirty. TAKUTO MARUKI - Persona 5 Royal

PROPAGANDA (UNDER THE CUT):

The Persona fandom might pounce on me for this one, but Takuto is such a sweetheart! He's a cringefail malewife high school counselor! He's awkward, naive, and clumsy, he's the "how do you do, fellow kids?" meme. He's a great cook and he's always taking little sippy sips from his little apply juice box during his counseling sessions. That man sure loves his apples!

Takuto is the only adult in the game that's willing to support the teenage protagonist fully and enthusiastically from the get-go, no questions asked. He's tired and horribly traumatized but that won't stop him from trying to be a ray of sunshine for his students, all while repressing his own pain. He also goes out of his way to help total strangers. Basically he really thinks he needs to be the one giving and giving but never taking.

HOWEVER, he is not a pushover and this is important! He WILL speak up if he considers someone is being treated unfairly. He supports changing the system and believes in restorative justice for literally everyone except his One (1) sworn enemy which I think is funny.

Anyways, he might be a lovable dumbass but he is incredibly passionate about his research into cognitive psience. He could ramble on and on about it all day and I swear his eyes light up whenever you talk to him about it or show the slightest interest in it. You cannot convince me that man is neurotypical. Either way he seriously believes in his research's power to change the world for the better and will do ANYTHING to achieve it.

[MAJOR SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ONWARDS] Sooooo if the protagonist helps Takuto with his research, he's eventually bestowed the power to rewrite the very fabric of reality with no warning! Of course, being who he is, Takuto decides to use this power to rid the world of pain, to erase everyone's memories of their trauma and bring their loved ones back from the dead, and create a reality that's easier for everyone according to himself!

My favorite thing about Takuto's writing as an antagonist is that his motivations never change. Yes, he goes to some fun and cool extremes to achieve his goal, but he never does anything for himself even now that he has the power of a god, and he still really believes he's only sacrificing himself for everyone else's happiness. He's a great example of thinking "the ends justify the means," and "the road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Even if the protagonist chooses to confront him, they both still respect and care about each other like they did before. Takuto is genuinely distraught when he hears the protagonist doesn't approve of his vision for the world, because he really does think this is all for the best. He's just brainwashing people to make them happy! He also has some cool religious symbolism going on. He's convinced that the universe chose him specifically to guide humanity into a better, happier world. He misses his wife, Tails. He is perfect.

Reading Lord of Chaos now and there's SO much good Gawene content. "Rare was the man who wanted to marry a woman who, with the Power, could handle him like a child if she chose." Well this man likes it!!

It feels weird to me that people hate him, because malewives are such an important part of the Wheel of Time world of gender relationships, and Gawyn is the Ultimate Malewife.

LOC was the book that first got me truly invested in gawyn and in gawene! and what a top-tier line that i'd forgotten!! rare is the man who wants to marry a woman who could handle him like a child but gawyn is over here going "mommy? sorry. mommy?" god bless him. he IS the Ultimate Malewife! he's crucial to the ecosystem!

it truly is baffling that he is the #1 Most Hated WOT Character. he doesn't do anything! at most i could see people finding him boring or annoying, but the level of hatred directed at him just makes no sense. most of the Reasons Why Gawyn Sucks posts i see are just people deliberately interpreting everything he does in the most uncharitable light possible, or hating him for things that they straight up made up and that did not happen in the text lmao

but also, getting briefly into a couple instances of Narrative Malpractice (to use @butterflydm's recently-coined phrase) re: gawyn later in the series. if i'm remembering correctly, you know most/all spoilers but this is your first time reading the series, so i'm putting a cut here to be safe - i don't mention any big spoilers though, just a few things that may not make total sense if you haven't read the book in question haha (mostly with TOM and point #2)

i feel like the biggest actual, not-made-up-by-haters issues are 1) gawyn was sooooo slowburned because his storyline can't move forward until egwene's does and hers can't move forward until the ta'veren boys' do and mat is busy getting walls dropped on him and fucking around in a circus for 4 books and killing the pacing, and so the ripple effect out from that makes it feel like gawyn is sitting around stewing in indecision for way longer than he actually is.

and 2) when sanderson took over, he brought with him a hell of a lot of real-world patriarchy-rooted assumptions of what it means to be a prince, and applied those to gawyn in a way that does not make sense since gawyn is a prince in a matriarchal society (or rather, in a country with matriarchal royal succession; culturally, andor is definitely not a full matriarchy despite what reddit believes). so he invented this whole arc of "gawyn needs to learn how to be a warder instead of a prince aka how to step out of the spotlight and live in a woman's shadow" but as the son of the reigning queen and brother & protector to the future queen, gawyn was literally raised from birth to be in a woman's shadow instead of holding the spotlight himself. this is not an issue for him. he literally swore the oath "my blood shed before hers, my life given before hers" as a toddler and was raised with that mentality, which translates pretty fuckin directly to being a warder and being in the shadow of a woman who's more important than him!

but sanderson assumes that a prince would struggle to play second fiddle to an aes sedai, because that would be the case for a prince raised in a patriarchal royal family. which is a shame because it leads to takes like "gawyn hates that egwene is more powerful than him" which is patently untrue for his original characterization, as you point to with this line straight out of RJ's mouth! (and even for his sanderson characterization it's patently untrue since the conclusion of that arc is that gawyn DOES happily step into egwene's shadow.) it's also a shame because that struggle between his identity & duty as a prince vs. as a warder could have been really interesting, but sanderson approached it from the wrong angle. alas!

in conclusion, the only things wrong with gawyn are things that are the authors' fault, but gawyn himself has done nothing wrong ever in his life <3 i have faith that the show can bring more people around to him! especially because galad will be there being so rancid in comparison as a show!whitecloak.

in gong ziyu's defense...

he wouldve gave the sword wielder position up in the first few eps to shangjue if they just asked him without berating him every 10 seconds. everyone and their mothers KNOW he is not fit to rule, hell even he knows he isn't. he's one night called by the elders and told his dad and brother are dead, shangjue is m.i.a and he's going to be the next sword wielder. i don't even think his spirit has woken up yet in that carriage ride with zishang and the next thing he knows is he's getting a good old back tattoo that prohibits him from ever going out of the valley.

ziyu grew up thinking he wont ever need to train that hard or be as good as his brothers, huanyu was there fully capable and responsible, shangjue was also there, even yuanzhi despite being the youngest. zishang and him were the outcast, though zishang kept on trying; ziyu stopped caring. what ziyu lacked in skills in fighting and lack of knowledge about ruling he was extremely kind. he's the exact opposite of what they expect a gong man should be. the man has no mean bone in his body, he has some snarky remarks sometimes but never really says anything demeaning. like that scene where they were prying his mother's medical chart and found out that it was shangjue's mom instead, he could've said something to shangjue, something mean, something that would hit shangjue like truck; but he didn't. (noticed this too with zishang in the scene with yuanzhi in the workshop where yuanzhi said something about her dad hating zishang, she could've said something about yuanzhi not growing up with a mother and father bc they're deceased, she just weeped).

we've literally seen him want to give back the sword wielder position to huanyu when he came back, he was going to give it back 100% if huanyu wanted it. what ziyu wants in the beginning was to be the next hot malewife in jiuchen valley not to be the sword wielder.

yes, ziyu had doubts and was suspicious of everyone, especially gsj and gyz, he was grieving. but literally everything would've been cleared up if (1) they just sat down and spoke to one another without trying to one up each other. the front hill gongs have this animosity between them even if they do try to deny it, you can see how much of a better-fit zishang and ziyu are when they're with the back hill gongs. if anything shangjue and yuanzhi's consistent berating of him, made him want to become a legitimate sword wielder. he just went "well damn, might as well!", spite being one of his motivations to become better is sooooo funny to me, because same. People bend over backwards to praise Daemon for getting his brother seated when Alicent has given years of her life to Viserys and she gets vilified.

And then Daemon decides to choke Rhaenyra and people are shocked? Wtf. We all told you he wasn’t your little meow meow, your little malewife, and now you pikachu face?

I think part of my resentment of Daemon comes from the fact that he was horrible to so many women, but sooooo many female fans defended him because they thought that their malewife would never turn on the character they projected themselves onto. Like that’s some layers of internalized stuff tbh.
