At the end of August, some 70 youth were detained in Nigeria’s southern Delta state, accused of organizing a same-sex wedding. Another 76 people were detained in October for organizing a similar event in the northeastern Gombe state. These mass detentions seem to send a clear message: LGBT people are less welcome than ever in Nigeria, the most populous state in Africa, at nearly 240 million inhabitants.

That is certainly how it seems to Francis Ndimele. Only a month after the mass arrest in August, which made headlines, he forced to emigrate from his home in Lagos to the United States. “My parents disowned me in 2020 after discovering I was gay. I had the support of an LGBTQI+ group that gave me shelter in Lagos. Despite this, my family kept sending police officers to chase me. They believe my sexual identity is an embarrassment to the family, especially since they are clergymen from an apostolic church. And the Nigerian police use the arrest of LGBT+ people for extortion, knowing that the law does not protect us,” the 24-year-old says, bitterly.

In 2014, the then-president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, enacted legislation banning same-sex relationships, as well as any public display of same-sex affection or membership of LGBTQ+ groups. The law imposes a penalty of up to 14 years in jail for anyone who “enters into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union,” and sentences up to 10 years in jail anyone who “registers, operates, or participates in gay clubs, societies, and organizations” or who even supports said groups. Nigerian lawyers and human rights activists argue that the draconian law is a violation of basic universal freedoms, and that the police regularly use it to make arbitrary arrests, and even to torture arrestees.

Lagos-based lawyer Chizelu Emejulu defends LGBT people in different Nigerian states. He says, “It seems that [the anti-LGBT law] was only passed in order to harass and extort.” It is an instrument of the government “to suppress democracy,” he says. Emejulu points out that no one has been convicted in the African country since the homophobic law came into effect a decade ago, and says that all the individuals who were arrested during the most recent raid were released on bail, although the court has ordered them to appear every month since. No charges have yet been brought against them.

Nigerian police applied the law for the first time in 2019, when they processed 47 men for “public show of same-sex amorous relationship,” according to human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch, although that case was dismissed because the prosecution did not present any witnesses in court.

In January, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights joined critics of the law with its Universal Periodic Review, a periodic review that analyzes the state of human rights around the world every four and a half years. The U.N. recommended that the Nigerian government withdraw the anti-homosexuality law, the liberation of anyone who had been arrested based on their sexual orientation and the end of persecution of the LGBT community, according to Human Rights Watch, which warns that this kind of recommendation has “little to no impact” on these kinds of issues.

Parades of humiliation

Human rights activists have also raised the alarm over Nigeria’s latest group arrests being paired with a humiliating police tactic: pre-trial media parades of detainees. The Nigerian Supreme Court declared in 2022 that this practice violates the Constitution, but during last August’s arrest, the police operation was streamed live on social media, as has been the case with most homophobic arrests.

Lawyer Stephen Okiroro stresses that these practices go against Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the presumption of innocence. “Public parading of suspects by Nigerian security agents was common during the military era, when the repressive military government suspended several human rights laws. Now we have a democratic government, and one of its values is fundamental human rights,” he says.

Only 22 of the 54 African countries allow same-sex relationships. Although in Nigeria, the law establishes prison sentences, in 12 of the country’s 36 states where Sharia (Islamic law) is in force, the death penalty can be applied to members of the LGBT community or to those who go against traditional norms of behavior. In November, local media reported the arrest of eight young men for “immoral dress.” The accusation: dressing in garments considered to be women’s clothing. The punishment: three months in prison and 10 lashes. “Transvestism” is being targeted by the federal government, warn organizations such as Human Rights Watch. In April, a legislator introduced an amendment to the law against same-sex marriage that imposes penalties of six months’ imprisonment or fines of 500,000 naira ($513).

The privilege to flee

Those who can, escape this suffocating environment. “I had already planned to travel and had my visa, but I got help from human rights advocates to pay for my flight reservation to the United States, where I now consider myself safe,” says Ndimele, the young man persecuted by his relatives. “My parents are happy that I am no longer around and that their church members can no longer make fun of them.” Daniel Orji, who lived in the southwestern Nigerian state of Ogun, also left the country after being fired from his job. “A colleague saw me in a gay venue when I was on vacation, took pictures of me on the sly and sent them to the office. They fired me and asked me never to come back, under threat of reporting me. I got a job in the U.K. and moved about six months ago,” he says. “[In Nigeria] we face all kinds of discrimination from people at work and in all other social encounters. I feel very sorry for those who can’t travel like me. It’s really hellish.”

Ndimele and Orgi were lucky to be able to flee the country, but leaving isn’t an option for everyone. One of the people who don’t have that privilege is Kunle Adeagbo, who says he has been detained and extorted on various occasions. “I live in fear. The law doesn’t just allow the police to treat LGBT people in an inhumane way, it also subjects us to mob violence. I was once injured in the street on the way to a party. But it was hard for me to go and report it at the police station because of the stigmatization and discrimination committed by those who are supposed to protect the lives and property of citizens.” Adeagbo eventually worked up the courage to report his assailants, but the accusation backfired. “The police detained me, tortured me, kept me in custody and forced me to confess that I’m gay. They only released me after I paid them,” he says. “We are not asking for very much, we just want the violence to stop so that human rights defenders and organizations that provide services to LGBT people can freely support us.”

The spokesperson for the Nigerian police force, Muyiwa Adejobi, did not respond to calls or text messages sent by this publication. The Nigerian Minister of Justice did not respond to questions, either.

A law that violates the Constitution

Benjamin Abiboye, human rights lawyer, says that Article 40 of the Nigerian Constitution states that every citizen has the right to freely assemble and associate with others, and in particular, form or belong to political parties, unions or any other association to protect their interests. “So, why should the anti-LGBT law punish people for gathering peacefully? Why should the government look the other way when there is mob violence against them?” he asks. The law Nigeria passed in 2014 “is the most repressive law passed since the return of democracy to the country in 1999,” he says. Okiroro agrees: “Freedom of association is a fundamental human right in a functioning democracy, and it is essential that the government provide space for people to express different views and defend their common interests.”

In addition to violating the Nigerian Constitution, the homophobic law also violates international human rights agreements, like the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom of expression, freedom of association, freedom of assembly and the equality of all people. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Nigeria assented to with reservations in 1993, assures the equality of all people before the law and their right to not suffer from discrimination.

Canoeing is both a sport and a recreational activity — one that’s relaxing and good for the environment. Wherever there is water, there are canoeists. History of Canoe Day

Canoes have been around for millennia and used by different cultures and civilizations throughout the ages. The oldest canoe in existence dates back to 8000 B.C. It was carved out by hand with basic flintstone tools from the hollowed-out trunk of a pine tree. Canoes predate the arrival of Europeans on the American continent. They were widely used as a method of transport, catching food, trading items, and even in warfare.

Native Americans used canoes made of birch-bark trees, tying together strips of wood with strong roots, then sealing them up with a pitch to prevent leakage. In 3500 B.C. the design of South American canoes was simpler but still effective. They made their boats from hollowed-out logs, which they expanded with heat and sharpened on both ends. This made them cut through the water faster. Around 1500 B.C. Polynesians had very elaborate, colorful canoes equipped with sails and crossbeams. They were much larger and sturdier than conventional canoes as their purpose was ocean voyages.

By the 19th century, the techniques and technology for building canoes had evolved thanks to centuries of interaction with Europeans. Canoeing became a popular activity in the Western world as a result of this. In a world when ships and railroads existed, there was no need for canoes to be utilized for maritime transportation. Instead, Europeans used them for recreational and sporting purposes. John MacGregor, an English explorer who popularized canoeing in the United States and Europe, created the Royal Canoe Club of London in 1866. This was followed by the “American Canoe Association” formed in 1880. In 1946, the International Canoe Federation was founded, acting as the umbrella body for national canoe organizations worldwide.

The books Ted gives to his players (I could only catch 4)

Sam: Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.

It is about a child genius selected by military forces to save the world from destruction. He is a brave and determined person. Ender is given a special teacher to help him reach a top division. Through a series of tough obstacles, Ender becomes a better tactician. He was so young when he started training and was sent into battle to kill the ‘buggers’.

Parallels: Sam is from Nigeria and is picked to move to England to join Richmond’s first team because of his playing skills and potential. One of the main conflicts is between Ender and his brother, Peter, who was not selected for the elite training program. Maybe this is a reference to Jamie? I think the message Ted wants to give to Sam through giving him this book is even though Ender was successful in battle, he did not make any friends during training. Sam should take the initiative to make more friends. Also, in the book, everything was treated as a competition, and people were not above manipulating each other. This could be a warning to Sam to be cautious and avoid manipulation as his success grows.

Jamie: The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitszgerald

The Beautiful and Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch in 1910s New York, a socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune; his complicated marriage to Gloria Gilbert; the couple's troubling experience with wealth and status; his brief service in the Army during World War I; and Anthony and Gloria's journey through alcoholism and partying. Gloria and Anthony's story deals with the hardships of a relationship, especially when they are each pitted against the other's selfish attitudes. Parallels: I honestly think this can be about Jamie’s relationship with Keely. Jamie is obviously Anthony, as the superstar of AFC Richmond. Throughout the book, Anthony is greedy and consumed with dreams of wealth and glory, until he reaches his lowest point (financial ruin, cheating on Gloria, alcoholism). That is when he regrets the decisions he made in his youth. The purpose of giving this book to Jamie is to remind him that maturity is important and he needs to start growing up. Jamie needs to work harder to achieve his goals of becoming a great player, instead of waiting for success to come to him and ending up wasting his youth.

Ok I’m going to add another point. I feel like Jamie throwing away this book could be some foreshadowing that he won’t fit into Richmond. He is ultimately not given the choice to improve because he is traded back to Manchester City. Or perhaps he just hated the idea of reading something given to him by Ted. I’m reading too much into this “lighthearted” comedy. Oh my god.

Robbie (thank you for telling me who this is!): Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Sixteen-year-old Jacob Portman grew up listening to his grandfather tell him stories of living on an island in a children's home where each child had a supernatural ability of some sort. He goes to the island, fails to find the home a couple of times, and is taken by six children to a stone cairn. He travels back in time to 1940. The school is run by a headmistress named Miss Peregrine, who has her own peculiarities. As Jake learns more about her and the children at the orphanage, he starts to uncover some very dark and scary secrets.

Parallels: From what I know of Robbie, he might like the fantasy adventure element. It’s a book about a group of society’s misfits (with special powers, even the main character eventually discovers he’s special) coming together to get out of a time loop. Or maybe defeat some monsters. I don’t remember the plot, but this could be a message to Robbie to become an important part of the team under the guidance of wise teacher.

Roy: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline d’Engle

A young girl’s struggle with leadership. Meg is a girl who struggles at school and cannot fit in with the crowd, although she is a smart person. Together with her friend, Charles Wallace, they save Meg’s father from IT. It is about a battle between good and evil, and the eventual triumph of love. This book can be spotted in 3 episodes, including one where Roy is reading it on the treadmill.

Parallels: Let me start off by saying Ted and Beard got it spot on with this book. The need to recognise one’s limitations in order to grow? Roy’s task of being captain of a ‘mediocre’ team. How to distinguish between good and evil? Roy trusting his instincts to make judgements, help the others around him, and choose love instead of hate. (Perhaps have a more cordial relationship with Jamie.) The message that even though conformity brings a sense of peace, it is still so much more worthwhile to embrace the unexpected? This is Roy Kent, a once powerful midfielder going to a middling club to end his career quietly, but then being inspired by Ted and Keely to be a better version of himself.

When you’re an extremely isolated person, how do you find people who can answer cultural questions? When I asked Writing with Colour it wasn’t answered and a few others just said “speak to people you know of that religion/heritage and if you don’t, find out why you don’t have any PoC friends”. I don’t have any friends or acquaintances of any religious or cultural background (health issues have lead to a decade of isolation), so I have nobody to ask. I want to write a PoC lead but I’m white.

Guide: Writing About a Diverse Character from Outside the Community

Things to Consider and Where to Find Information

Although this particular question refers to writing People of Color when you’re white, a large part of my answer applies to writing any character from a diverse group, when you’re not part of that group, whether it’s people who can see writing about people who are blind, or a white American writing about a Mexican American person with Mexican immigrant parents. So, while my first answer is specific to writing People of Color, the others apply to writing people from pretty much any diverse situation or community.1. There’s a difference between "race” and “culture.”

I think one of the most fundamental points of confusion white writers have about writing People of Color is not understanding the difference between race and culture. Outside of experiencing racism (which isn’t really for white writers to write about in the first place), race doesn’t tell us who a person is and what their lives are like. If you’re writing about a Black Canadian, Brit, or American, for example, you shouldn’t have “cultural questions” about them. Just write about a Canadian, Brit, or American. You should only have cultural questions about a person if they belong to a particular culture. Just because someone is ancestrally Indian, for example, doesn’t mean they practice an Indian religion or culture. If you’re a British white lady and you want to write about a British Black lady, that’s super easy–just write about a British lady and you’re all set. But if you’re a British white lady who wants to write about a Black British lady who was born in Western Nigeria to Yoruba parents, moved to London with them as a teenager, but Yoruba culture still plays a role in her life, then you need to research Yoruba culture. And, more specifically if you can, Yoruba communities in London or elsewhere in the U.K. But, again, don’t worry about the “culture” of a Person of Color unless a particular culture plays a big role in their life. Just write people.

2. There’s nothing about race, culture, ethnicity, or nationality (or anything else, really) that you can’t find out through a simple Google search.

If you have questions about your character’s culture, I promise you can find those answers via Google. As the writer, it’s your job to go out and find that information, which doesn’t mean asking someone else to give it to you. That data is out there. It’s up to you to find it. And the fact that people in diverse communities, particularly writers in those communities, frequently put together guides and other resources to help writers portray people in their community–that’s a huge boon that all writers need to take advantage of. Instead, there’s a huge issue with writers asking “how do I portray….?” instead of finding the information and figuring it out themselves. Will there sometimes be questions that genuinely can’t be answered by information that’s out there? Sure, but it will be very rare. Most of the time, that information is there. You just have to take the time and put in the effort to find it.

3. If you do have one of those rare “this can’t be answered by a Google search questions,” if you have done your other research, there are places you can go to find people who can answer your question. But they’re not going to bother if they can see you haven’t done your due diligence.

A writer friend of mine was writing about a particular culture in the far-future and needed to know what elements of that culture might be affected by an element in the story. That’s not the kind of thing you can find out on Google, because this is a thing that has never happened before and couldn’t realistically happen in a non-fantasy world. But because he had done loads of research on the culture, both in terms of the past and present, had specifically looked at how things like colonization and advancing technology had affected those elements, and used that information to guess how the elements of his far-future fantasy world might affect this culture, he was able to go to an online forum of other writers (I’m not sure which one, but the NaNoWriMo, Reddit, and Absolute Write Water Cooler writing forums are examples) and seek out people from that particular culture, present his situation and his thoughts, and then ask them how they thought elements of their culture might change in this situation. He had loads and loads of responses because people could see that he had done his legwork and was as well-versed as he possibly could be on the culture. So people from that culture didn’t mind filling in the gaps that couldn’t be filled in by research. But if you go to a Q&A site like Writing with Color or a writing forum like on NaNoWriMo, and you just ask, “How do I portray a person from such and such culture?” not too many people are going to want to help you, because why should they tell you information that can easily be found through a Google search? So, keep that in mind. Do your research and save your questions for things that genuinely can’t be found via research.

4. Where to find information about diverse groups when you are isolated or otherwise unable to experience those groups firsthand.

Online Community Groups - Any community, whether it’s people with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Peruvians living in the U.K., Black American feminists, trans writers, disease survivors, etc., almost certainly has at least some sort of online community if not an entire organization dedicated to that community. It may take some digging around, but you can find them, and as long as they’re not private support groups meant only for people from that community, most of the time they welcome people who are interested in learning about their community. So, look for these groups and if they welcome people from outside the community, join the group and start absorbing everything you can.

In-Person Community Groups - Many communities also have actual groups that get together and put on different events and activities rooted in the community, and once again, they often welcome people from outside the group who want to learn about the community. Even if you can’t attend these activities and events in person, you can still typically follow them online and can learn a lot from pictures and video from the event. So, try looking for events within that community and see if you can find video or an online picture gallery from that event. And if you can and they welcome people from outside the community, try to attend one!

Look for Community Leaders, Activists, and Other Notable People from That Community - Many communities have vocal people within the community who stand as unofficial (or sometimes official) ambassadors of that community. They speak out on issues affecting the community, they share news and events related to the community, and offer lots of firsthand commentary from the perspective of that community. You can find them on social media, particularly twitter, they often have blogs or YouTube channels, and sometimes they have web sites. Find the notable people in the community you want to write about and follow them. Read their posts. Read the things they share. Absorb the information they give you.

Watch a Video or Documentary - There’s a really good chance that there are videos or documentaries about the group you wish to write about. Go to Google and type in “documentary about people who are deaf” or “documentary about Latinx Americans.” There’s a good chance something will come up. Try doing the search on YouTube.

The operation against Mayo — which was reported at the time but until now was not known to have been carried out by American mercenaries — marked a pivot point in the war in Yemen, a brutal conflict that has seen children starved, villages bombed, and epidemics of cholera roll through the civilian population. The bombing was the first salvo in a string of unsolved assassinations that killed more than two dozen of the group’s leaders.

The company that hired the soldiers and carried out the attack is Spear Operations Group, incorporated in Delaware and founded by Abraham Golan, a charismatic Hungarian Israeli security contractor who lives outside of Pittsburgh. He led the team’s strike against Mayo.

“There was a targeted assassination program in Yemen,” he told BuzzFeed News. “I was running it. We did it. It was sanctioned by the UAE within the coalition.”

The UAE and Saudi Arabia lead an alliance of nine countries in Yemen, fighting what is largely a proxy war against Iran. The US is helping the Saudi-UAE side by providing weapons, intelligence, and other support.

The press office of the UAE’s US Embassy, as well as its US public affairs company, Harbour Group, did not respond to multiple phone calls and emails.

The revelations that a Middle East monarchy hired Americans to carry out assassinations comes at a moment when the world is focused on the alleged murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi Arabia, an autocratic regime that has close ties to both the US and the UAE. (The Saudi Embassy in the US did not respond to a request for comment. Riyadh has denied it killed Khashoggi, though news reports suggest it is considering blaming his death on a botched interrogation.)

Golan said that during his company’s months-long engagement in Yemen, his team was responsible for a number of the war’s high-profile assassinations, though he declined to specify which ones. He argued that the US needs an assassination program similar to the model he deployed. “I just want there to be a debate,” he said. “Maybe I’m a monster. Maybe I should be in jail. Maybe I’m a bad guy. But I’m right.”

Spear Operations Group’s private assassination mission marks the confluence of three developments transforming the way war is conducted worldwide:

Modern counterterrorism combat has shifted away from traditional military objectives — such as destroying airfields, gun emplacements, or barracks — to killing specific individuals, largely reshaping war into organized assassinations.

War has become increasingly privatized, with many nations outsourcing most military support services to private contractors, leaving frontline combat as virtually the only function that the US and many other militaries have not contracted out to for-profit ventures.

The long US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have relied heavily on elite special forces, producing tens of thousands of highly trained American commandos who can demand high private-sector salaries for defense contracting or outright mercenary work.

With Spear Operations Group’s mission in Yemen, these trends converged into a new and incendiary business: militarized contract killing, carried out by skilled American fighters.

Experts said it is almost inconceivable that the United States would not have known that the UAE — whose military the US has trained and armed at virtually every level — had hired an American company staffed by American veterans to conduct an assassination program in a war it closely monitors.

One of the mercenaries, according to three sources familiar with the operation, used to work with the CIA’s “ground branch,” the agency’s equivalent of the military’s special forces. Another was a special forces sergeant in the Maryland Army National Guard. And yet another, according to four people who knew him, was still in the Navy Reserve as a SEAL and had a top-secret clearance. He was a veteran of SEAL Team 6, or DEVGRU, the sources told BuzzFeed News. The New York Times once described that elite unit, famous for killing Osama bin Laden, as a “global manhunting machine with limited outside oversight.”

The CIA said it had no information about the mercenary assassination program, and the Navy's Special Warfare Command declined to comment. A former CIA official who has worked in the UAE initially told BuzzFeed News there was no way that Americans would be allowed to participate in such a program. But after checking, he called back: “There were guys that were basically doing what you said.” He was astonished, he said, by what he learned: “What vetting procedures are there to make sure the guy you just smoked is really a bad guy?” The mercenaries, he said, were “almost like a murder squad.”

Whether Spear’s mercenary operation violates US law is surprisingly unclear. On the one hand, US law makes it illegal to “conspire to kill, kidnap, maim” someone in another country. Companies that provide military services to foreign nations are supposed to be regulated by the State Department, which says it has never granted any company the authority to supply combat troops or mercenaries to another country.

Yet, as BuzzFeed News has previously reported, the US doesn’t ban mercenaries. And with some exceptions, it is perfectly legal to serve in foreign militaries, whether one is motivated by idealism or money. With no legal consequences, Americans have served in the Israel Defense Forces, the French Foreign Legion, and even a militia fighting ISIS in Syria. Spear Operations Group, according to three sources, arranged for the UAE to give military rank to the Americans involved in the mission, which might provide them legal cover.

Despite operating in a legal and political gray zone, Golan heralds his brand of targeted assassinations as a precision counterterrorism strategy with fewer civilian casualties. But the Mayo operation shows that this new form of warfare carries many of the same old problems. The commandos’ plans went awry, and the intelligence proved flawed. And their strike was far from surgical: The explosive they attached to the door was designed to kill not one person but everyone in the office.

Aside from moral objections, for-profit targeted assassinations add new dilemmas to modern warfare. Private mercenaries operate outside the US military’s chain of command, so if they make mistakes or commit war crimes, there is no clear system for holding them accountable. If the mercenaries had killed a civilian in the street, who would have even investigated?

The Mayo mission exposes an even more central problem: the choice of targets. Golan insists that he killed only terrorists identified by the government of the UAE, an ally of the US. But who is a terrorist and who is a politician? What is a new form of warfare and what is just old-fashioned murder for hire? Who has the right to choose who lives and who dies — not only in the wars of a secretive monarchy like the UAE, but also those of a democracy such as the US?

BuzzFeed News has pieced together the inside story of the company’s attack on Al-Islah’s headquarters, revealing what mercenary warfare looks like now — and what it could become.

The deal that brought American mercenaries to the streets of Aden was hashed out over a lunch in Abu Dhabi, at an Italian restaurant in the officers’ club of a UAE military base. Golan and a chiseled former US Navy SEAL named Isaac Gilmore had flown in from the US to make their pitch. It did not, as Gilmore recalled, begin well.

Their host was Mohammed Dahlan, the fearsome former security chief for the Palestinian Authority. In a well-tailored suit, he eyed his mercenary guests coldly and told Golan that in another context they’d be trying to kill each other.

Indeed, they made an unlikely pair. Golan, who says he was born in Hungary to Jewish parents, maintains long-standing connections in Israel for his security business, according to several sources, and he says he lived there for several years. Golan once partied in London with former Mossad chief Danny Yatom, according to a 2008 Mother Jones article, and his specialty was “providing security for energy clients in Africa.” One of his contracts, according to three sources, was to protect ships drilling in Nigeria’s offshore oil fields from sabotage and terrorism.

Golan, who sports a full beard and smokes Marlboro Red cigarettes, radiates enthusiasm. A good salesman is how one former CIA official described him. Golan himself, who is well-read and often cites philosophers and novelists, quotes André Malraux: “Man is not what he thinks he is but what he hides.”

Golan says he was educated in France, joined the French Foreign Legion, and has traveled around the world, often fighting or carrying out security contracts. In Belgrade, he says, he got to know the infamous paramilitary fighter and gangster Željko Ražnatović, better known as Arkan, who was assassinated in 2001. “I have a lot of respect for Arkan,” he told BuzzFeed News.

BuzzFeed News was unable to verify parts of Golan’s biography, including his military service, but Gilmore and another US special operations veteran who has been with him in the field said it’s clear he has soldiering experience. He is considered competent, ruthless, and calculating, said the former CIA official. He’s “prone to exaggeration,” said another former CIA officer, but “for crazy shit he’s the kind of guy you hire.”

Dahlan, who did not respond to multiple messages sent through associates, grew up in a refugee camp in Gaza, and during the 1980s intifada he became a major political player. In the ’90s he was named the Palestinian Authority’s head of security in Gaza, overseeing a harsh crackdown on Hamas in 1995 and 1996. He later met President George W. Bush and developed strong ties to the CIA, meeting the agency’s director, George Tenet, several times. Dahlan was once touted as a possible leader of the Palestinian Authority, but in 2007 he fell from grace, accused by the Palestinian Authority of corruption and by Hamas of cooperating with the CIA and Israel.

A man without a country, he fled to the UAE. There he reportedly remade himself as a key adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, or MBZ, known as the true ruler of Abu Dhabi. The former CIA officer who knows Dahlan said, “The UAE took him in as their pit bull.”

Now, over lunch in the officers’ club, the pit bull challenged his visitors to tell him what was so special about fighters from America. Why were they any better than Emirati soldiers?

Golan replied with bravado. Wanting Dahlan to know that he could shoot, train, run, and fight better than anyone in the UAE’s military, Golan said: Give me your best man and I’ll beat him. Anyone.

The Palestinian gestured to an attentive young female aide sitting nearby. She’s my best man, Dahlan said.

The joke released the tension, and the men settled down. Get the spaghetti, recommended Dahlan.

The UAE, with vast wealth but only about 1 million citizens, relies on migrant workers from all over the world to do everything from cleaning its toilets to teaching its university students. Its military is no different, paying lavish sums to eager US defense companies and former generals. The US Department of Defense has approved at least $27 billion in arms sales and defense services to the UAE since 2009.

Retired US Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal once signed up to sit on the board of a UAE military company. Former Navy SEAL and Vice Admiral Robert Harward runs the UAE division of Lockheed Martin. The security executive Erik Prince, now entangled in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference, set up shop there for a time, helping the UAE hire Colombian mercenaries.

And as BuzzFeed News reported earlier this year, the country embeds foreigners in its military and gave the rank of major general to an American lieutenant colonel, Stephen Toumajan, placing him in command of a branch of its armed forces.

The UAE is hardly alone in using defense contractors; in fact, it is the US that helped pioneer the worldwide move toward privatizing the military. The Pentagon pays companies to carry out many traditional functions, from feeding soldiers to maintaining weapons to guarding convoys.

The US draws the line at combat; it does not hire mercenaries to carry out attacks or engage directly in warfare. But that line can get blurry. Private firms provide heavily armed security details to protect diplomats in war zones or intelligence officers in the field. Such contractors can engage in firefights, as they did in Benghazi, Libya, when two contractors died in 2012 defending a CIA post. But, officially, the mission was protection, not warfare.

Outside the US, hiring mercenaries to conduct combat missions is rare, though it has happened. In Nigeria, a strike force reportedly led by longtime South African mercenary Eeben Barlow moved successfully against the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in 2015. A company Barlow founded, Executive Outcomes, was credited with crushing the bloody RUF rebel force in war-torn Sierra Leone in the 1990s.

But over spaghetti with Dahlan, Golan and Gilmore were offering an extraordinary form of mercenary service. This was not providing security details, nor was it even traditional military fighting or counterinsurgency warfare. It was, both Golan and Gilmore say, targeted killing.

Gilmore said he doesn’t remember anyone using the word “assassinations” specifically. But it was clear from that first meeting, he said, that this was not about capturing or detaining Al-Islah’s leadership. “It was very specific that we were targeting,” said Gilmore. Golan said he was explicitly told to help “disrupt and destruct” Al-Islah, which he calls a “political branch of a terrorist organization.”

He and Gilmore promised they could pull together a team with the right skillset, and quickly.

In the weeks after that lunch, they settled on terms. The team would receive $1.5 million a month, Golan and Gilmore told BuzzFeed News. They’d earn bonuses for successful kills — Golan and Gilmore declined to say how much — but they would carry out their first operation at half price to prove what they could do. Later, Spear would also train UAE soldiers in commando tactics.

Golan and Gilmore had another condition: They wanted to be incorporated into the UAE Armed Forces. And they wanted their weapons — and their target list — to come from uniformed military officers. That was “for juridical reasons,” Golan said. “Because if the shit hits the fan,” he explained, the UAE uniform and dog tags would mark “the difference between a mercenary and a military man.”

Dahlan and the UAE government signed off on the deal, Golan and Gilmore said, and Spear Operations Group got to work.

Back in the US, Golan and Gilmore started rounding up ex-soldiers for the first, proof-of-concept job. Spear Operations Group is a small company — nothing like the security behemoths such as Garda World Security or Constellis — but it had a huge supply of talent to choose from.

A little-known consequence of the war on terror, and in particular the 17 combined years of US warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan, is that the number of special operations forces has more than doubled since 9/11, from 33,000 to 70,000. That’s a vast pool of crack soldiers selected, trained, and combat-tested by the most elite units of the US military, such as the Navy SEALs and Army Rangers. Some special operations reservists are known to engage in for-profit soldiering, said a high-level SEAL officer who asked not to be named. “I know a number of them who do this sort of thing,” he said. If the soldiers are not on active duty, he added, they are not obligated to report what they’re doing.

But the options for special operations veterans and reservists aren’t what they were in the early years of the Iraq War. Private security work, mostly protecting US government officials in hostile environments, lacks the excitement of actual combat and is more “like driving Miss Daisy with an M4” rifle, as one former contractor put it. It also doesn’t pay what it used to. While starting rates for elite veterans on high-end security jobs used to be $700 or $800 a day, contractors said, now those rates have dropped to about $500 a day. Golan and Gilmore said they were offering their American fighters $25,000 a month — about $830 a day — plus bonuses, a generous sum in almost any market.

This week’s number one coin is without a doubt Cosmos (+53% and big volume) but nobody can figure out why an announced Binance.us listing creates such a buzz. Second place is also a double digit gainer EOS (+11%). But sadly we see some double digit losers as well. Ethereum Classic (-11%) lost a part of its previous gains in the final week before it’s 12 September hardfork and Lisk (-12%) performed disappointingly reaching its lowest price of 2019.

The net effect on the Bundles was a flat performance this week, but with large differences between the currencies. Big 3 (-2%) was slightly down because of Bitcoin (-5%) returning yet again to $10k and only compensated by Ethereum (+2%) which seems to have found its bottom price for now. In the Top 30 (-0.7%) only as little as eight coins performed positively. In Penny Stock (-1%) the BitTorrent token (+12%) stole the show and with Cardano (+2%) another big drop for this Bundle was prevented. There is a shift towards a few altcoins, but not yet a general change.

All in all the market responds very positively to news of adoption and actual use-cases and negatively to struggle and conflict in a project team which could cause delays in development. Keep an eye out for this type of news if you are investing in single cryptocurrencies.

Stellar (XLM)

Stellar was founded by Jed McCaleb, who also founded another popular currency, the Ripple. In the beginning, Stellar even used the same protocol as Ripple. Stellar token

Stellar received an initial $3M funding from payment processor Stripe (in exchange for 2 billion lumens) and donations from organizations like BlackRock, Google and FastForward.

The project covers the operational costs of further development of the protocol by accepting tax-deductible public donations, and by using the 5 billion lumens (5%) reserved for this purpose at the start of the currency.

Stellar wants to be the email of money, and of course with the exception of spam. A required minimum balance of 20 lumens in your account is meant to prevent spam accounts. This minimum does not apply if you hold lumens on your Triaconta account.

Stellar inflation

Stellar does not use Proof of Stake like other cryptocurrencies and also does not use Proof of Work like Bitcoin or a dividend system like Neo with Gas. Stellar has an inflation rate of 1% per year. This fixed nominal inflation is distributed in the form of new tokens to all Lumens holders with more than 0.05% of the votes of other accounts in the network. So there is no block reward, and most transaction processing nodes in the Stellar network will be active applications of the Stellar blockchain. They don’t run a node for any other reason than to maintain the network they use themselves.

Decentralized exchange

A very important part of the Stellar blockchain is the built-in decentralized exchange. Through the lumens token a user can send every coin (crypto and fiat) to someone else and they can receive the value in every coin (crypto and fiat). The network automatically finds the best exchange rate.

Stellar and IBM

World Wire is a global payment system that connects banks via the Stellar network. It is developed by IBM and six international banks. Currently, the network is limited to two currencies: Stellar Lumens (XLM) and Stronghold USD, a stablecoin with underlying value in US dollars. It replaces the usual SWIFT network in a way that makes the entire “crypto” part invisible to the banks. Invisible but capable of switching real-time between different (crypto) currencies. A large reliable party like IBM makes it a little less stressful for the conservative banks to step into such a new technology.

Stellar or Ripple?

World wire looks a lot like Ripple, and that’s not a problem. The more banks become convinced that they can save money for themselves and their customers by joining a digital crypto network, the better. Some will choose Ripple for this, others will choose IBM and Stellar. While this is a great improvement and definitely a step in the right direction, people of colour are still underrepresented. We can do more to make sure that authors of colour are seen and heard. The following list, while by no means exhaustive, is a selection of excellent YA and MG novels written by Black authors*. This month, take some time to explore their stories.

While the confiscation of the black market items went on without a hitch, transporting the Ivory and Vibranium turned to be more problematic.The convoy was hit with a series of bombs, leaving the majority of Squadron X dead, and Ulysses Klaue now with the Vibranium and Ivory in hand. Klaue knew who Jaime Lannister was, he knew the price Tywin Lannister would pay to have his son returned to him, even if his son were maimed.

To no surprise Tywin did pay the ransom, but the man who returned home was not the man had left for the jungle. Thirty percent of Jaime’s body was burned, his right hand, his trigger hand was completely gone and due to a head injury Jaime was left in a coma and unresponsive.

Fast forward three years : Tywin has spent a fortune in healing his son’s brain injury, to no avail. Until he stumbles upon an abandoned American military project called Weapon X. Jaime was injected with a serum meant to bring out any latent mutant abilities. The process was insanely painful, but it did bring Jaime from his coma. The process made Jaime more than a little unstable, his memories more or less gone. The mutation that manifested included heightened senses, agility, strength. His ability to heal is quicker than an average human but no where near that of Wolverine or Sabertooth. It also includes a more than perfect aim, Jaime never misses his mark even with a bionic hand.

Jaime would end up leaving his family and making himself a name as a mercenary known as the Kingslayer. .

Music lovers will enjoy this year’s programme, which features a wide range of sounds and styles. The ever-popular festival ceilidh and the Dulwich Festival choir night will both return.

The Harlem Meer Cats are also back by popular demand. The group will recreate the music heard at the Cotton Club in the 1920s and 30s, playing the hits of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway among others.

Renowned blues singer-songwriter Adam Norsworthy will also return this year after two sold-out shows. He will perform with London Symphony Orchestra violinist Tom Norris and with his blues band The Mustangs.

Dulwich’s beautiful Christ’s Chapel will be hosting a chapel organ open afternoon and acclaimed ensemble Onyx Brass will play at the 400-year-old venue.

One of our top picks from this year’s programme is a performance by the brilliant Caleb Femi, former young people’s laureate for London. Caleb draws upon childhood memories of Nigeria and Peckham in his powerful poetry.

He will be joined by another Peckham voice, writer and poet Yomi Sode, who explores Nigerian and British culture through work that can be humorous, loving, self-reflective and uncomfortable.

Eighty years ago 10,000 children arrived in Britain as unaccompanied refugees on the Kindertransport from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia to escape the Nazis. A screening and panel discussion with two former kinder will explore how they adapted to life in Britain.

At Bell House, catch a discussion with Jocelyn Catty and Trevor Moore, editors of Words in Pain, with readings from their embellished centenary edition of the collected letters of writer, thinker and rationalist Olga Jacoby.

For youngsters the children’s art competition will return, and the Kingsdale Foundation School will play host to a youth concert, where local schools and music groups will showcase their talented young musicians.

Award-winning children’s theatre will be on offer at St Barnabas Parish Hall with the fantastical tale of Tommy Foggo – Superhero, a magical multimedia story of a life saved by music, composed by award-winning Stephen Deazley and cellist, baritone and actor Matthew Sharp.

The Dulwich Festival Fair on Goose Green will provide further fun for all the family with a range of stalls and activities, including the colourful community chain of pom-poms and donkey rides. The Love West Dulwich and Dulwich Park fairs will take place on the final weekend of the festival, with a host of entertainments for children and grandparents alike.

Another family-friendly outing will see the London Wildlife Trust lead a spring orchard tree-care event and picnic. The orchard is being developed by the Dulwich Estate to mark 400 years since Edward Alleyn founded a school, chapel and almshouse in Dulwich. The day promises nature-themed activities for all.

Meanwhile to mark the 400th anniversary of Burbage Road’s namesake, Richard Burbage, artist Lionel Stanhope will be creating a mural to celebrate the actor, who famously founded the Globe theatre.

The HandleBards will perform an original take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, while Tim Crouch will present his one-man show I, Malvolio, which reimagines Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night from the point of view of its abused steward. It’s a charged, amusing and sometimes unsettling show, which sees Malvolio ask the audience to confront some uncomfortable truths.

The popular walks programme will feature a street-art walk that will take visitors on a tour of the Dulwich Outdoor Gallery. Ian McInnes will lead a walk giving an insight into Dulwich’s Georgian heritage, Lette Jones will give a tree walk and Brian Green will lead a walk on local history.
