While searching for a wife for Jakob Jorstedt (her Executioner), Queen Matilda came across a high prowess lady by the name of Raingarda Lantpertidi whose father won a Prize Mail from the Pope's Grand Tournament. The Prize Mail was passed down to Raingarda and equipped by her which explains the high prowess. Hopefully, she'd have some children with Jakob and pass the Prize Mail down to them. After which, Prince Goffredo could swoop in to forge a claim on the Prize Mail.
Tumblr media
Next, Queen Matilda forcibly recruits her 2 child prisoners, Elianora de Lacon-Gunale, the Giant girl and Torchitor de Lacon-Gunale, the Comely and Pensive boy. Both are captives from the Sardinian war with former Judike Torchitor of Tortoli. The hope is that they will grow up to be talented courtiers that we can make use of in future.
Tumblr media
Queen Matilda also demanded a hostage (girl) from some Count in the HRE which she had a strong hook on, and this taking in of the new hostage enabled Queen Matilda to search for a new Wet Nurse. This time around, the experienced Agalina was Frail in constitution, which meant the healthier but childless Anastasia had a higher Aptitude than her.

(maximilian habsburg – john david washington – 43 – holy roman emperor) welcome MAXIMILIAN HABSBURG. you hail from THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE and have been risen to the position of EMPEROR. you are a member of the house of HABSBURG and will go down in history as the JUDICIOUS. though you are VENGEFUL & , MYOPIC you are blessed with being DEVOTED and PRUDENT. [juno – 21+ – she/her– none– gmt] ♱
BIOGRAPHY
Maximillian knew greatness would always come to him; born to strong bloodlines in the heart of the Empire, he had little doubt he would become Emperor - the election process, being a mere formality; his parents primed him for the throne from the moment he was born. Max honors his parents in all that he does -- he is superemely proud of his family and stellar lineage.
Serious and studious from a young age, Maximilian is prodigious in his biblical studies, and nearly zealous in his beliefs (a very important note that he loves his faith but in no way believes it superior; he believes himself a defender of all faith, for otherwise we would all fall to hedonism)
The empire is everything to him -- its prosperity and might, a deeply personal cause; he believes all failures and triumps, are his presonally. Max is prudent and cautious -- he does not readily leap into battle or conflict, and seeks peace above all other things; he is aware of his power, and more so, of how easily a man can lose his crown. He has watched English kings come and go -- his Empire is more tediously strung together, govening different people and cultures; should he become unpopular, his reign would be greatly challenged.
Intelligent, affable, softly-spoken to some, and an ardent quoter of scripctures and philosophers, Max is eager to share and learn from the delegations in Paris; if he had not been born a man of the Empire, born to rule, he would have happily been a scholar.
Max has a close relationship with the Pope and Rome -- he sends letters so often, the Pope undoubtedly rolls his eyes when he receives another; but the relationship on the surface, is wholly united and strong.
His sons marriage is a promising one, and his empire stands at new heights, as he enters Paris; Max believes himself at an advantageous position, one that will allow him to pick and choose alliances that greatly favor him; he wishes to forge bonds with the east, and create further opportunity for trade and friendships. He does not wish to become involved in others petty squabbles -- unless those who plead their causes, are able to to persuade him their victory, will be echoed in the Holy Roman Empire.
HEADCANONS
he loved his first wife, and conducted a prolonged state of mourning; but he was eager to be wed again, once the worst of his grief has passed -- he knows he may not father further heirs, but his second wife is as dear to him as the first. he is loyal and believes firmly in the power of marriage
max is far more involved with this son than most royal parents of the era; he has had a large hand in his sons education and tutoring, and believes his son as the divine heir to his empire
 WANTED CONNECTIONS
Foreign allies, friends, etc - diplomacy aside, max is an engaging figure, and seeks to make the summit a personal success, as well as a political one; he deeply hopes to form friendships with likeminded figures ; perhaps they both enjoy archival work, share notions on god, religion, etc or eat cakes and vibes
trade partners, diplomatic ties  -- the empire has vast and has a lot to offer; likewise, there is plenty they lack, and max wishes to strengthen the HRE through new diplomatic ties
enemies of the empire - for whatever reason, your character detests the empire; being the figurehead, it is impossible for it not to lead back to disliking max; he is a patient man, but would bristle at those who oppose him

Vow
“Are you out of your mind, Gilbert? What did you think you were doing, bringing him back, like this?”
Holy Rome, who was no longer Holy Rome, who was no longer interested in statecraft or making sarcastic comments about his impending death to Roderich—but instead, preoccupied with toy trains, pets and picture books. His eyes had lit up with childish delight at the sight of the Archduchess’ new puppy. He had begged Gilbert to be allowed to play with it.
He hadn’t even recognised Roderich. It was surreal.
Gilbert’s countenance is infuriatingly, one of utter calm.“I didn’t ‘do’ anything. When I found him, he had no memory.”
“You’re lying.” Cycling through life and death was the norm for their kind. But no one, as far as knew, had ever returned like this. Missing chunks and pieces of time? Many times. But as a blank slate?
“Well, believe what you will.” Gilbert shrugs. There’s something like mockery playing at the edges of his smile. “It’s very flattering that you think I did—what? Cast a spell? Made a bargain with the Devil himself?”
“You gave him a new name.” Ludwig. Old German. The name of kings. One familiar to his culture, but still strange and foreign to his ears. Roderich still cannot match it to the child wearing the face of the boy-emperor. “Does he know he once had another?”
Did the boy know he once had another name? Another life?
“Not yet. But I will tell him, in good time.” Gilbert’s eyes meet Roderich’s, cool and steely. “Naturally, you wouldn’t want to traumatise a child, would you?”
“You? Caring and being responsible for a child? I suppose you think this is funny. Making us participate in this farce, when all of us know who he once was.”
There’s something in Gilbert’s gaze that Roderich can’t put his finger on. Conviction? Commitment? It unsettles him.
“Because he remembers nothing. He is not Holy Rome anymore. Why tie him down to a dead legacy, instead of a new beginning? It is a good name. And I will raise him to be worthy of it.”

Druids ain’t shit and here’s why.
Straight from the Pond- here’s a lesson from your friendly neighborhood historian.
It’s a long post so the history lesson is under the cut.
Druidic “history” (or pseudohistory rather) actually begins with early renaissance politics.
Basically Italy is dominating politics and religion by being able to call back to an ancient history that led directly into the formation of the centralized Catholic church. Surprising nobody who's familiar with European history- the German states want in on that action but they don't really have that direct line linking them to antiquity beyond their conquering by Rome- so, like any good 15th century academics, they create that link by just making shit up.
So they look back at ancient roman writings, and see mention of druids, and also realize that they actually don't know fuck all about them, there's no records of them beyond a few classical authors- and for the record, classical authors are NOTORIOUSLY unreliable, there are entire graduate level seminars dedicated to teaching people how to read through ancient Roman propaganda, almost every druid I have ever met has taken classical authors at face value, anyway I digress, they just start making up a history of the druids, German lands used to be populated by Celts, and they create these mystical druids who serve as the direct precursor to The Church in these areas, like they forge documents and everything so when Italy goes "oh yeah since when?" they have something to hold up as a "gotcha" - they fashion statues and hide them in crypts as further evidence. It’s wild.
So, France sees that the German states are becoming more politically popular within the HRE (Holy Roman Empire) because of these druid stories, and so they go "Hey Celts used to live in France too... we should have druids"- and they create druid stories. Scotland at the time is very close with France politically and they go "Hey us too, we're still Celts,” and then it spreads to Wales, and then England. Ireland is mostly staying out of druid nonsense- like in this period of the OG pseudohistories Ireland is like "this is disgusting we don't want druids" so like all the writings in Ireland in this period on druids are like "yeah the Church HATES druids"
Things quiet down for a little bit, because the stories are established, the cards have been played, whatever, but then Neo-Classicism and the Enlightenment- and now suddenly it's cool to have ancient history again - but like... Britain has "we got conquered by Rome" or "hey a few centuries ago people were saying we had druids?”; so naturally the more nationalistic go with druids....which is how we get, Iolo Morganweg.  Iolo's real name is Edward Williams but he insisted on going by his "bardic name"- bc druids.  Williams was a Welsh antiquarian- who is in some scholastic circles considered the father of “modern” druidry.  Williams literally named his son Taliesin after the bardic poet behind the Poems of Taliesin which is frequently in association with the Mabinogi in Brythonic texts. To pull from the wiki on this asshole:
[he made] claims that ancient Druidic tradition had survived the Roman conquest, the conversion of the populace to Christianity, the persecution of bards under King Edward I, and other adversities. His forgeries develop an elaborate mystical philosophy, which he claimed as a direct continuation of ancient Druidic practice. Williams's reportedly heavy use of laudanum may have been a contributing factor
Yeah.... just... yeah. So not only did he forge like hella documents, which today in the 21st century, over 100 years after he was revealed as a fraud, are still more popular than the originals- but he also is the reason that ogham is like that. Williams created a ‘bardic alphabet’ based on combining Scandinavian runes and extant ogham - we are still wading through his bullshit trying to fix ogham.
And this brings us to the Celtic Twilight......
Tumblr media
To quote @liminalblessings, “And a bunch of noodle fuckers decide "hey, we didn't bastardize the Irish enough for the last however long.... We should do more of that."” But for those of you not familiar with the term, it's a nationalistic pan-Celtic movement that wanted to like, make the Celts in vogue again? but like their idea of the Celts as "noble savage” - because the modern era was scary. At this point, Pan-Celtic Nationalism is starting to rise as pushback against British colonialism in Celtic nations. Unfortunately it's heavily reliant on the Druid myth as like.... A foundational shared cultural history between the surviving Celtic nations. The point largely is, though, "look at us. We should all be sticking together because we're the same / cousins / brothers". Which leads to a L O T of Celtic culture from various countries kind of getting.... molded into one singular idea- which is USUALLY what we think of today when we think of Celts. Basically everything gets branded as Irish because the Irish were “pure” and a “separate racial identity” as opposed to the Scots and Welsh. It took that idea of a pan-Celtic singularity, and then went ham with it mostly on Irish pre-Christian stuff, and as it occurred not too long after Williams’ fuckery, it really cemented those forgeries and psuedohistories in the cultural memory. And Williams wasn’t exposed as a fraud until after the Celtic Twilight had died down.
Now... Yeats, we all know Yeats- some people recommend his writings for learning about the fairies. DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE PEOPLE. Yeats makes up an entire tree calendar, and also files all Scottish fairy lore under the “Irish” tab because he’s part of the Celtic Twilight and didn’t you know that everything Celtic is actually Irish? Fuck this guy. #yeetyeats
Enter... Robert Graves- destroyer of histories and all around fuckwit. Graves maked up an ENTIRE religious notion around a mother goddess and shit. And like, the irony of that is the people he supposedly went to originally were like lol dude you're a fucking idiot none of this is real. But he published it anyways and of course it got taken seriously. And then there's a lot of reverse etymology at this point which is just.... really bad linguistics. And because of Graves’ white goddess + said bad linguistics by others, you get Danu.(Danu is a whole thing, please shoot me an ask if you want a post about all of that nonsense).
So.... Gerald Gardener.... to quote @liminalblessings again- “didn’t have a direct role in druidism, except he kind of did.”  See, Gardner had a good friend who was hella interested in the Celtic twilight. Said friend was hella inspiried by Gardner's "recreation" of old British trad witch traditions... But he didn't jive with the old British trad witch traditions. HE jived with Irish Druidry. So while Gardner's doing HIS thing, his friend's doing the modern Druid thing- heavily drawing from Gardner's own work but "making it more historically Druid" Except, as you may have picked up- there is no such thing as “historically druid” that can be reconstructed. Basically he can only pull from Williams, but because he had issues with with the old 15th century on stuff, up to the Twilight era (despite those being his sources) so he tries to distance himself from the earlier movements and leans hella heavy into Gardner's work as a result. Which is, if you've ever wondered, why Wicca and Druidry have such incredibly similar ritual structures and beliefs.
SO, this guy starts the Druid Order, decides that he’s gonna like pull his teachings from Williams- but he's also gonna say that Williams has nothing to do with his druidry because y'know, Williams has relatively recently been revealed as a fraud. This guy goes through the grueling process of ripping off his best bud gardner founding Druidry, right. So The Druid Order has this rebranding in 1951, that lauds the “history of the druids” as written by Williams but simultaneously rejects Williams saying “yeah we have nothing whatsoever to do with that guy.” Mix into this narrative, Gardener’s “burning times” bullshit, and now not only do we have mythical pseudohistorical druids, but a rewrite of Williams’ “the druids survived conversion” which then turned into - “The druids were heavily persecuted by the church and survived a horrible burning times but despite this there’s a tradition of continuous druidic belief.” Here begins the bullshit known as “vestiges of pagan thought”- which took actual historians not even a decade to disprove, and yet still circulates in pagan circles, because nobody picks up a fucking book.  Theoretical Folkloric archaeology became very popular at this time, which postulates (incorrectly) that all folk traditions and folklore absolutely stems from Pagan times and is 100% the Christianization of pagan practices and thoughts- which is not at all true. (Not-so-friendly reminder that Eostre? DOESN’T FUCKING EXIST. STOP FALLING FOR A JOKE MADE BY A MONK)
Td;lr so far- the druids went from
the Catholic clergy before the Catholics existed
to
a religious group that survived conversion
to
druids survived an intense and violent persecution
And now? In this our 21st century?
Well.... druidic organizations today tend to still push these ahistorical narratives, that buy into the pagan persecution complex.... and several of these organizations also have known racists and terfs on their recommended reading lists. And while some organizations have made attempts to become more historically accurate- but the end result is usually.... bad. It tends to result in them using a source from like 1960 that’s been disproven 1000 times since by other historians to go “look a historian agrees with us!” rather than like... keep up with current research trends and academic standards. Druids also tend to be hostile to the syncretism of the Irish church which is just..... so fucking dumb. Don’t worship gaelic deities if you can’t accept that our lore are Christian texts about pagan beliefs.
So yeah..... druids ain’t shit and I can prove it historically. I am also more than willing to send anyone links to full length books on the history of druids if you want to learn more.

In the Holy Roman Empire book i'm listening to, the author talks about the church getting more involved in politics as contrary to Gregory's reforms, but my impression of the papal reformers isn't that they're reforming to become more holy in the abstract and separate themselves from the temporal power, it's so that they're more worthy of leading kings - being more pious strengthens your position with temporal rulers, because you're trying to find a reason why they should listen to the church rather than carry out their own plans, and the pope having a more direct line to God is one that makes a lot of sense.
and my problem with that is that it seems to tie into a lot of the problems I have with him - he does a lot of, idk, next-century generalship? whatever monday morning quarterbacking is for emperors. in general (the emperors should have forged a German identity rather than chasing the "chimera" of wider imperial power) but this one especially seems to look at the problem with entirely modern eyes - it's coming from a world where the concept of separation of church and state exists and is held to be good.
And historians always look at the past with modern eyes - you have to, they're the ones we have - but 1. it seems to me to be bad history to say what they should have done in a world where we only have the failure (who's to say that trying to make the HRE more German wouldn't have destroyed it earlier) & 2. it's definitely bad history to say what they should have done from an entirely modern perspective.

REGÉ-JEAN PAGE, 32, FREDERICK BABENBERG. ❝ ⤚⟶ EUROPE, 1458. thanks is given by the ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA, FREDERICK BABENBERG, from AUSTRIA. they are at best AMBITIOUS, and at their worst EXPLOSIVE. whilst abroad, their ambition is to CONVINCE EUROPE OF HIS RIGHT TO RULE, THUS DEPOSING APOLLONIA. HE seems to remind everyone of REGÉ-JEAN PAGE & FALCON CLAWS CLAMPED TOO TIGHT UPON A LEATHER GLOVE, THE MIST OF WINTRY BREATH BEFORE ONE’S FACE, AND A PERFUMED BATH SCORCHING THE TOE THAT TESTS ITS WATERS. ❞
HISTORY:
Frederick’s father, an Austrian prince, was an ambitious man, if easily distracted. He desired to prove his worth by navigating trade deals with far flung kingdoms, and was so keenly adventurous that he was rarely seen in Austria. He forged a great relationship with the kingdom of Zimbabwe, particularly, and was lauded for forging profitable trades of gold and ivory. However, his trips to Zimbabwe became more and more frequent, as he had fallen in love with its eldest princess, Cebile, and she in love with him. The relationship was discouraged as Leopold ought to marry someone from a country with closer ties to their country, but he had always been willful, and in time they were wed. Their marriage was not fruitful, bearing only one son, but it was extremely loving.
Unfortunately, in spite of this union Austro-Zimbabwean relations did not improve massively, particularly after several large ships transporting gold were lost in a storm. Frederick was raised to believe in love, and was quite sheltered from the tempestuous politics of the HRE, so as a boy he had no real idea of his birthright. When Emperor Maximilian died it was vaguely noted that technically he had the right, but his parents preferred to keep him away from that. He was their only son, and they didn’t want to put him at risk, not even for power. At first he was ignorant, quite content in his studies. Frederick was a keen linguist, particularly in his shared mother tongues of German and Shona, and also proved a quick study in falconry -- a passion he carries with him still.
Kept in relative ignorance, he didn’t particularly question his place in the world until his parents died when he was still quite young. They perished on a journey to his mother’s home when their ship was attacked by pirates, leaving Frederick in the care of his tutors. They gave him a more rounded education, focusing more on court and politics - already the wheels were turning in his head, but the real catalyst for his burgeoning anger came during an attempt on Apollonia’s life that left her sick in bed for weeks. Everyone thought she would die, and Frederick began to prepare for the throne. When Apollonia lived, denying him that right, he was furious, and he’s not really calmed down since then.
PERSONALITY:
Frederick is fuelled mostly by anger. He is angry that his parents, by attempting to shelter him, instead denied him the role he was born to fill, and he is especially angry at Apollonia for taking advantage of his parents softness and seizing a throne that was not hers. This rage is kept behind a cool, even charming, veneer, but it is a thin veneer indeed and maintained only by sheer obstinacy. Frederick believes he will need to curry favour with as much of Europe as he is able, to obtain their support so that one day he can take the throne without issue; so, he does his best to charm whenever possible. Apollonia is the only person that sees the true extent of his rage, as he makes no secret at all of how much he loathes her. He does, however, have a soft spot for gentle souls. Although he feels wronged by his parents' detachment from politics, he appreciates that their actions came from a place of love. Sometimes he even wishes he shared that softness, but it has all been burned out of him. He is, though, fiercely protective of more gentle people, and will not stand by and watch anyone getting bullied.

On 25 Dec 1085, Christmas Day, Duke Robert "the Fox" of Apulia died from his wounds at age 70. As he was Queen Matilda's dear friend, his death pushed her slightly over the edge towards harbouring dark thoughts. So Queen Matilda took to writing her worries down on paper and gained the trait Journaller, which helped her reduce some stress.
Meanwhile, Queen Matilda offered vassalage to Duke Roger of Apulia, Duke Robert's son and heir on Low Feudal Obligations, bringing the Duchy of Apulia under the fold of the Kingdom of Italy and the HRE.
Tumblr media
Finally, Queen Matilda's beneficiary, Liutold von Eppenstein had finished crafting Queen Matilda's Crown which is forged from silver and set with small pieces of zircon.
Tumblr media
And last but not least, Queen Matilda visits the Royal Court of the Holy Roman Empire in Klingenberg, a Level 8 royal court where Kaiserin Jutta "the Wicked" resides. Queen Matilda takes the knee and pledges her oath of loyalty to the Kaiserin.

Absolutely true, we're pretending to have our shit together and as soon as we're home everyone cussing each other out. All the German state rivalries have been cultivated like fine wine over a millennium or more and now we're making all these washed up former independent territories work together and it's grand. And yep the Bavarian main dude will be on TV saying "I spoke to the chancellor and he said" and I'm like did Merkel get a sex change before realising they're trying to be Austrian again
it’s why I love following you guys’ news. externally, all of you seem to be so collected and play the role of “the only sane man of the west” really well! but peer around the corner domestically, and it’s coming to blows and it’s beautiful (especially as my ass doesn’t have to directly feel the consequences unless the AfD wins). I love that all the nationalists who forged Germany were really like ‘ok so maybe we didn’t like each other much in HRE but maybe since France is staring at us funny it’ll work this time’. ugh really if Bavaria wasn’t so rich and important, I would say throw them to the Austrians. especially since Austria’s wanted the damn place for centuries, maybe it would get them to shut up. but fucking Bavaria has to be “important” and “necessary”. absolutely disgusting
