I was aware people were feral for Mads Mikkelsen, but I didn’t know why until I got to this scene in season 1.

I’ve seen those memes of like “Hannibal vs Hannibal if he had just asked Will on a date” with the second being much smaller
But god can you imagine if season one happened and they were dating, if he had asked Will out in the first one or two episodes? If he wasn’t doing those things to a client/friend but a romantic partner?
(Note: Not implying dating is greater than friendship, but there are more socially defined boundaries in a romantic relationship that come with expectations of responsibility and a feeling of emotional ownership, while Hannibal repeatedly in canon is able to hide behind the idea that he isn’t even friends with Will but merely that there is friendship potential, getting around the idea of said social and personal responsibility that comes with friendship in a way he couldn’t if he had a verbally and socially acknowledged relationship with Will. This is based mainly on the idea of them having definite, undeniable form of relationship with defined expectations others are aware of that Hannibal would not be able to say aren’t there because there wasn’t actually anything happening beyond therapy, as well as an implication of an increase in time spent together and access to each other)
Would it have changed his reaction to Bella if he now had a romantic partner and could understand the idea of having this person keep that level of secret from him and how it would feel to learn this? But also the allure of having a secret like that to keep from his partner and the power it would give him in the relationship, making him feel more secure?
Hannibal’s reaction to Will being too busy for him because he’s going after the Chesapeake Ripper now that it’s not just as a patient/friend missing an appointment/chance to hang out but his partner being at work rather than with him? That in a way he was taking Will away from himself but can’t stop trying to impress him as the Ripper and hear Will’s thoughts? The “date with the Chesapeake Ripper” comment now directly referencing that Hannibal is in one way losing him and in another way gaining him and the lengths he will go to have him both ways?
We saw how Hannibal reacted when it was possible Tobias killed Will Graham his friend, but if Tobias came in and insinuated he had just killed Will Graham the person he was actively in a relationship with? Will Graham who he at that point would have felt a level of ownership over, especially given that in the show it’s the episode he realized he genuinely began seeing Will as a friend so it would be him realizing he genuinely was in a mutual relationship and not just him playing a game while the other person thinks it’s serious? And that being the moment he learns another serial killer might have killed Will?
Hannibal telling Will his job will be the death of him and Will justifying it by saying he’s saving lives and Hannibal snapping back that he doesn’t care about their lives he cares about Will’s life?
Alana in the show saying she can’t be with Will while he’s in his current mental state while Hannibal uses that state to his advantage?
The reveal that Will has had encephalitis and Hannibal has know and done nothing and is in fact allowing it to worsen? It has a low mortality rate but it’s still there (8-10%) especially if not treated, he’s not just in control with Will he’s actively risking Will’s life for his own curiosity. Would he be even more curious in a situation where he could observe Will so much more than occasional meetings? What other inconspicuous tests could he run with Will staying at his home, at least some nights? If he had full easy access to Will’s home while sleeping there?
Will acknowledging he couldn’t be with Alana because of where he’s at mentally being transferred to the question of if he and Hannibal shouldn’t be together while he’s like this and Hannibal panicking at something he genuinely wants to keep being potentially taken away? What he would say to manipulate Will into staying? The half truth way he would discuss it with Bedelia and whether he feels any guilt, and if he does questioning why he does when what he does to people hasn’t bothered him with anyone else before
Hannibal realizing Will is closing in on figuring out who he is and how this complicates him framing Will? Physically it’s easier with more access but would it be emotionally more difficult? Would he want to do it even more because of his emotional reaction?
When Will thinks he killed Abigail and is in jail, he implies Alana is lucky they didn’t get together. What would he say to Hannibal? Would he feel guilty, believing he had been putting Hannibal at risk by not leaving? Would Hannibal manipulate him to keep that feeling of guilt to reinforce the idea that he is a killer, or would he be afraid of the idea of Will ending things? How would Will perceive the state of their relationship with him in jail vs Hannibal? Would they each assume they were on the same page?
Will realizing Hannibal is not only the killer but the person who framed him, the next level of betrayal that would come with that? With the trust and access to himself that would have happened, how much it would close Will off from contact with others even more? The whole “Hannibal doing all of this just to see what Will would do” part of it?
And then how it spills into season two, with how in the show Hannibal is trying to maintain a friendship only now he still wants to keep that defined romantic relationship with Will who is obviously no longer interested? If Hannibal would genuinely see them as not together or this just a rough patch? Would he see Will as being able to stop the relationship from his end?

hi!! I was wondering if you could explain how people break up the seasons of hannibal? I understand 3a/3b but is there a 2a and 2b??? (also I love your blog and analysis’ if you see someone spam liking it’s me sorry😭😭)
aww thank you so much, I’m so glad you like my blog :”)) and no worries, I’d be happy to explain! fair warning though, I’m gonna give you a very detailed answer because I love talking about the nuances of plot and hannibal is so neatly structured it makes me want to devour it <3
so throughout the show the story follows several plot arcs at once (which all constitute the main plot) and because s2 and 3 roughly follow two at a time they’re categorised as either ‘plot arc a’ or ‘plot arc b.’ it’s pretty easy to identify the a/b plots in s3 because they’re so distinct (the florence arc vs the red dragon arc, as you know), plus there’s a big time jump and setting shift.
in s2 it’s a little less clear but still identifiable. s2a follows will’s imprisonment arc which roughly makes up the first half of s2 (I’d say from kaiseki until halfway through yakimono since there’s an odd number of episodes per season) while s2b follows his seduction arc. short-term character goals also change between arcs. for example, in s2a will’s main goal is to prove his innocence, hurt hannibal and escape incarceration, which is resolved once will proves the copycat killer and chesapeake ripper are the same and jack finds miriam alive. however, by resolving the central conflict of s2a will is suddenly faced with new problems/circumstances. thus, in s2b he has a new goal, which is to lure hannibal and assist jack with his capture. this plot thread is resolved in mizumono after hannibal escapes, ending s2b and setting up the central conflict and stakes that underpin s3a (and so on until the main conflict is resolved and the show finishes).
s1 is a little trickier to break up since it doesn’t follow the same structural pattern as s2 and 3. there’s no clear shift mid-season and will’s goal throughout stays the same, which is to find the copycat killer/chesapeake ripper while simultaneously trying to find himself during his sessions with hannibal. i.e no one really says ‘s1a’ and ‘s1b’, it’s all just s1. that being said, I personally have a system of breaking down s1 because I think there are small shifts present throughout the season regardless, even if they’re more minor. this is how I do it:
episodes 1-4 (initial set-up): sets up main themes/concepts the show explores + sets up will’s character by mirroring his psychology with each of the killers (and his foil dynamic with hannibal).
episode 5: transition between initial set up and friendship arc. out of all the killers so far (excluding hobbs) the angel maker reveals the most about will directly.
episodes 6-8 (friendship arc): sets up hannibal and will’s relationship more closely, with specific focus on hannibal’s masks (the psychiatrist vs the chesapeake ripper) and person suit. he destroys the two extremes of his personality (represented by franklyn and tobias) and chooses will despite himself. the rest of the show follows the consequences of this choice.
episode 9: transition between friendship arc and encephalitis arc. after the angel maker, the totem maker (interesting that they’re both “makers”) reveals the most about will directly.
episodes 10-13 (encephalitis arc): end result of everything that’s been built so far, concerning both will and hannibal (as observed through the first two mini arcs, the first focusing on will and the second focusing on hannibal). we look into will’s neuroses and understand his nature, separating him from hobbs, gideon, and georgia (note that the latter two are explored through the water/fire symbols, tying them together). hannibal also becomes semi-aware of the conflict between his need for love and want for control. this could also be described as their mutual “coming to awareness” arcs. by the end, both their s1 person suits (the most “human” aka morally acceptable/meek personas) are destroyed, and we’re left to explore their “monster” sides in s2.
I hope this helps and thanks again for the ask !!

Propaganda under the cut
Misa Amane
She’s goth. She’s a pop idol. She’s a mass murderer. She’s in love with a man who hates her. She had amnesia. She was tortured for fifty days and was just fine at the end of it. Two death gods fell in love with her and she was just ambivalent about it. She willingly halved her own life span twice except it doesn’t even matter because she’s basically immortal anyway. She was written by a misogynistic mangaka. Epitome of gaslight gatekeep girlboss.
Hannibal Lecter
the og of gaslight gatekeep girlboss! he manipulates will graham and the fbi from the start, leads will to believe he has committed a large amount of gruesome murders by taking advantage of his encephalitis leading to him getting arrested, turning the people he trusts against him. he goes out to crime scenes HE CAUSED with the fbi to profile the killers and always stays one step ahead! absolute king
"Hannibal gaslights Will so hard that the latter thinks he (a) hallucinated a killer that was legitimately in the room and (b) that he blacked out and murdered their surrogate daughter. (Also manipulated at least one of his psychiatric patients into becoming a murderer in a prehistoric furry costume) He gatekeeps the FBI for fucking years, only showing what he wants to. Really messes with their minds by leaving DNA and voice recordings of a supposedly dead girl. (Then gaslights *her* so she believes someone completely different held her captive) Even when he was arrested, it was only because he chose to surrender — only so his One True Murder Husband-to-be would know where he was. Hannibal is also determined to succeed in whatever he does. In fact, failure is not his vocabulary. He confidently commits all his murders, makes puns literally every episode about his cannibalism, and always seems to have control over his situation. Even in prison, he plays and wins all the mental games he chooses to dabble in. Hannibal is a gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss bastard and I love him. Pls vote for him"
literally gaslighted will graham throughout season one. also induced seizures, committed major medical malpractice, allowed brain fever to occur, then promptly framed him for murder and attempted to convince him that he had done it. 10/10 insane gay behaviour. gatekeeps the serial killing community by repeatedly murdering other serial killers (tobias budge, that weird racist eye guy, probably other people). also gatekeeps the dante community, also with murder. girlboss in everything he does. the cannibal puns, shattering the fourth wall by looking at the camera, the camp gayness……… the list goes on.
The entire plot is him gaslighting will and gatekeeping various things from various characters and he girlbosses his way through murder and cannibalism
Please don't make me answer this.

the moment after i made a Romeo & Juliet comparison, i saw another post about it, so i guess it's a sign.
Will said a line based on a Romeo line ("O, I am fortune's fool!"/"I am not fortune's fool, I'm yours.") to Hannibal, thus making Hannibal his Juliet (something a little funny considering that the tale ends in a double suicide for the main leads).
but moreover, if we're thinking of Capulets and Montagues as killers vs. the law/general morality, the comparison makes more sense, especially if you allow Hannibal to represent the younger Capulet characters in general.
the comparison gets me thinking about Mercutio and Beverly. Mercutio was Romeo's friend, sided with the Montagues, but was also sort of a comedic relief. he's a good friend, and he lightens the mood as a stark contrast to the tragedy unfolding around them. the same could be said of Beverly and Will's relationship.
and then Tybalt (a male Capulet- citing again the concept of Hannibal representing Capulets in general) kills Mercutio in a duel. specifically, Mercutio dies because no one listened to him in time as he was begging them to get a doctor, much like how no one listened to Will in time except for Beverly. after Mercutio's death, everything afterwards feels that much more devastating. after Beverly's death, the series is cemented in darkness.
and then there's Romeo's slaying of Tybalt, and Will sending someone after Hannibal to kill him. at that moment, Hannibal was Tybalt, not Juliet. he was an enemy, his feelings not yet mutual. however, Hannibal does not die, and thus Will's guilt for any attempts directed toward the man don't come until Mizumono.
Romeo's punishment thereafter was banishment, much like how Will was no longer welcome in the FBI nor fully trusted by his peers after his release. it could also be comparable to the Mizumono ending. the exile could also be compared to Will's self-imposed exile, when he left to begin a new life far away from everything that happened while all the other characters were still dealing with one another.
in fact, i'll take this a step further: Juliet was also going against the Capulets. repeatedly, we see that Hannibal is being courted (in a way) by other killers, all of whom he declines in favor of Will. he even gets mocked for this repeatedly, between Abel Gideon making fun of his desire, Bedelia expressing her disapproval as carefully as she can, and even Tobias' attempt on Will's life. i would even go as far as comparing Bedelia to Count Paris, a character to be betrothed to Juliet in a way that simply was never meant to be.
in the end, the two choose being together over living a life without the other, even if the only way to be together is in death.

it’s absolutely true that whole Franklyn/Tobias vs Will/Hannibal becomes immensely funnier if you see Franklyn as Hannibal’s counterpart (lonely, eager to make a friend out of the only person who seems to understand him) and Tobias as Will (alone by choice, a teacher, an expert in his field) - interestingly, it could be a nod to something that will emerge much later: under that mask, Will is a cold, calculated killer.
Also like, Hannibal kills Tobias as if he wanted to kill Will, to kill that part of himself who is fascinated by Will - after all, he sends Will into the lion’s den by sending him to Tobias’ shop - but the immense relief on his face as he realizes Will is still alive? Yeah, good job dr Lecter, your plan backfired and now you’re in love.

Hannibal AU
Will still is an empathic FBI profiler and teacher who lives alone with his dogs in Wolf Trap Virginia and Hannibal is still a psychiatrist and former surgeon, they both have the same prehistory everything is the same THE only difference is that Will is the Chesapeake ripper and he actually drags Hannibal into his world
(y'know like he says after Hannibal vs Tobias)

Hannibal Tag Meme
Tagged by @fancyoats. Thanks for thinking of me :-) Books, Movies, or T.V. show: TV show, no hesitation. The later books go places I don't want to go with Clarice, and so do the films that followed those stories. Favorite Character: Noooo, don't make me choose! The series needs both Will and Hannibal to work, it could never have been what it is without both of them. I fell in love with Will first, obviously, but Hannibal caught up. Favourite moment of the entire franchise: I think when Will tells Jack that he wanted to run away with Hannibal. Because that's when I knew that the series really was going to go there, and not just be Another Extremely Slashy Series That Doesn't Acknowledge It. Favorite quote of the entire franchise: Just about any time Will is vicious and sassy. Especially to Bedelia :-) "I'd start running, if I were you." Fight scene you’d want to see on NBC’s Hannibal:Will vs Jack, because Jack won't stop and Will's made his choice. Bitter and emotional as well as physical, and Will fights dirty. Alternative theme song to NBC’s Hannibal: Catch and Release by Silversun Pickups could have been written for Hannigram. Pardon me Wanna live in a fantasy Quietly show you everything you'll ever need I hope you'll take it I know you're faking just a little bit C'mon and taste it Just get excited cause you're giving in Come and see How the wind in your hair will feel differently Catch and release the lure above One day when I'm not writing, I'll make a vid to that. Favorite book from the series: It's been a long time, but Silence of the Lambs. Favorite movie from the series: Silence of the Lambs. Genuine quality film-making. Favorite episode from NBC’s Hannibal: SO hard. Maybe Naka-choko? Everything from Randall Tier and the hand-washing through the crazy four-way sex scene to 'You slice the ginger' and the closing eye-fucking cannibal dinner. Hannibal Season 4, yes or no: Tentative yes. I trust Bryan and the actors, and without the hiatus my answer would have been absolutely yes. But after this long a gap, there have been some utterly fantastic post-TWOTL fics written, and I just worry that I won't like what we get quite as much as some of those. Alternative hobbies to replace Hannibal’s cannibalism: He already has so many, does he really need more? Alternative animals for Will to collect: He makes his animals his family, so they have to be social creatures. And predators (I don't see him surrounded by guinea pigs). I can see him indulging himself with ferrets - highly intelligent, curious, trainable and endlessly entertaining. Animal (mythical or real) you’d tattoo on your back like Francis Dolarhyde: LOL, no tattoos for me, I don't do pain XD What brought you into the fandom; books, movies, or T.V. series: TV series, obviously. I read and enjoyed the first two books many years ago, but they didn't make me fannish. And even though I thought the TV series was fantastically made and brilliant, it didn't make me fannish until Hannigram becamse canon. Least Favorite scene from the entire franchise: The pig baby. A very few times, the magical realism goes too far for me, and that's the big one. Add Clarice to NBC’s Hannibal, yes or no: Yes. More smart women are never wrong to have, and the fanfics have shown me how well it can be done without impinging on Will and Hannibal's relationship. Favorite killer of the week: Tobias Budge. Great ep, great outcome. Hannibal invites you to a dinner party, you…: Check to make sure I'm not the only guest, then accept. Wouldn't want to apear rude... Your reaction to Mizumono (S2 finale):Abigail's alive! But! Oh no, no, stop! Your reaction to The Wrath of The Lamb (S3 finale): Wow. If it had to end there, I think that was the most perfect ending I could ever have imagined. @crystalusagi, do you want to play? @themarionette-theporcelaindoll?

i just thought of something, have more women than men figured out Hannibal's true nature on the show? Will and Tobias vs Miriam, Beverly, Abigail and Bedelia? if so, interesting.
Timeline of “when do people figure out Hannibal is a bastard/see through his person suit”
Chiyoh, *,  Bedelia, Miriam, Tobias, Abel (through no action of his own though), Georgina (sort of, if she saw Hannibal post recovery, she’d know,) Abigail, Will, Beverly, Matthew, Chilton (urgh), Margot, Jack, Freddie, Mason, Alana, the world.
(This is just off the top of my head. the * is for Murasaki, you could argue that, if they did write her in the show, she’d be placed there with Chiyoh, though I think Chiyoh would see it first.)
So yeah, I think it is skewed to the women knowing before the men.
