Do you ever think you're completely mentally healthy and then have a realisation that maybe you live in a fantasy land in your mind 24/7 because life is too stressful to think about?

It doesn't work. Masochistically, I search the names of other UK YA debuts that came out at the same time as mine and compare the number of ratings. This does not help at all. In fact, it makes me feel substantially worse.

"If anything," I point out to myself, slightly desperately, "a lack of ratings only suggests I don't primarily appeal to the type of readers who are on Goodreads which, given that I left Goodreads myself because I didn't like the vibes, is in fact no bad thing."

I look at the number. Half the number of Goodreads users, though? Can that be true?

"You're not supposed to be comparing yourself to other authors," says the voice in my head that sounds like the group chat. "And you're not supposed to be on Goodreads. Block the site already, for goodness' sake."

But--

"At least put a time limit on it."
