Hello Hellenic polytheists, deanists, pagans in general, and anybody else interested! I run Awful & Lovely, a submission-based online shrine to the Greco-Roman goddess Aphrodite/Venus. This blog was inspired by a 2017 Getty Villa project-- the museum hosted a shrine to Venus where visitors could leave prayers, wishes, and gifts for the goddess.

In the spirit of the original project, this blog is meant to be both a resource for Aphrodite worshipers to leave offerings, as well as being a unique experience for non-pagans. The blog hasn't gotten much traffic since I started it, but with so many Aphrodite/Venus devotees on this site, I feel like a lot of you would get good use out of it, so I'm blazing this post to try and get the word out. Why Crowley can’t go back to Heaven and can’t be restored as an angel…

…using Satan’s soliloquy from Book IV of Paradise Lost by John Milton.

Because I have a deep-below-lower-deep unholy decade-long obsession with Paradise Lost and Good Omens S2 has prompted a re-read.

(Quoted from the UPenn online version, linked below.)

Broad Context: In Paradise Lost, Satan fell because he “trusted to have equaled the most High”—he pushed for equality with God, challenged the idea of Omnipotence, and led war against Heaven trying to prove that God was not supremely powerful and if he and his forces could achieve victory, that they deserved power, too. But they lost, Lucifer fell and became Satan, and everyone who fought with him was cast Down as well. He wasn’t claiming to be above God, but challenging God’s supremacy was an act of hubris. There are TONS of themes, language, and visuals from classical/Hellenic myth and epic poetry and Satan reads largely as the hero of a Greek tragic epic. He follows Aristotle’s Poetics ideas of peripety and discovery: he massively fucks up his own life, leading to his own tragic downfall, and only realizes too late that all his ruinous problems are his own damn fault (pun intended). People have debated since publication the degree to which Milton knowingly or unknowingly had sympathy for the devil (cue Rolling Stones) but tend to agree that Satan isn’t a typical obvious bad guy villain.

Kind of like how Good Omens’ Heaven/Hell dichotomy isn’t really about Good/Evil and its main characters are a demon who is a bit of a nice person and an angel who is enough of a bastard to be worth knowing.

Scene Context: Post-Fall, Satan struggles with the understanding that he fucked up his own life, that he fucked up the lives of everyone loyal to him because they were all punished for that loyalty, that he deeply regrets his choices knowing now how they worked out and wishes he’d never Fallen, but that he can never go back to Heaven or to being “some inferior angel” knowing what he knows now.

SCENE SETTING (Lines 17-31)

And like a devilish engine back recoils

Upon himself; horrour and doubt distract

His troubled thoughts, and from the bottom stir

The Hell within him; for within him Hell

He brings, and round about him, nor from Hell

Good Omens Read:

For many of the same reasons as Satan in Paradise Lost, Crowley can’t return to Heaven. He can’t trust it anymore. He knows what it did to him and others like him. He can no longer abide the lie that Heaven is the side of the ang— the side of the good guys. Good guys don’t do the things that God and Heaven have done. Heaven and Hell take similar, parallel actions throughout Good Omens but at least Hell doesn’t pretend to be righteous about their destructive, cruel, unjust actions. Hell is awful but at least it knows that. Better the devil you know, if the alternative is the angel who is fundamentally dishonest.

If Crowley returns to Heaven, he’ll saunter back downwards immediately and there will be nothing vague about it the second time. He doesn’t trust it, he can never trust it again, and he has 6000 years of anger towards Heaven for his own Fall, which are 6000 years of viewing Heaven as the enemy, even if only as lipservice to maintain professional courtesy.

But now he’s been cast into a deep personal hell, (“a lower deep;” the internal turmoil that makes a shitty external situation orders of magnitude worse) because now Heaven has taken Aziraphale from Crowley.

And Heaven can hurt him. They’ve tried to destroy Aziraphale before. They tried to destroy Gabriel by destroying everything that made him Gabriel. They’ve been threatening “extreme sanctions” and removal from The Book of Life and Crowley only recently learned that was a real possibility and not a made-up horror story.

Crowley hadn’t trusted Heaven in 6000 years, but Heaven hurting him and Heaven hurting Aziraphale are incomparable metrics to Crowley.

Contrast Crowley’s typically cool responses to being personally threatened with his incinerating rage at anyone threatening Aziraphale.

Crowley responds to threats to his own personal safety and well-being (Hastur, Ligur, and Shax all threaten Crowley himself and Crowley responds with one-liners, sarcasm, cinematic threats that makes a cheap plant mister sound like a ‘44 magnum, and, you know, holy water) without breaking a sweat. But threaten Aziraphale and there isn’t a one-liner to be found. He can’t pretend to be unaffected when Aziraphale is in trouble. He sputters. He trails off. He shouts. He snarls.

Noting also that when Crowley forgets to act cool is a good indicator that something has deeply rattled him. Ex. Soaking wet, ash-streaked, screaming, sobbing, knocked on the ground, grief-wrecked Crowley in the bookshop fire. So when Crowley doesn’t have a quip ready, he’s actually scared. In the moments that matter, Crowley is as cool as crocs with mismatched socks.)

Crowley hasn’t trusted Heaven I’m 6000 years because of what it did to him. He could never have gone back.

But now Heaven has taken Aziraphale and can hurt him. So now Heaven, through the Metatron, offers Crowley the possibility of return.

The Metatron knows as well as Crowley does that Crowley can never go back. The Metatron knows it as well as God knows the same to be true of Satan in Paradise Lost:

There was never an honest offer to restore Crowley to Heaven. He could never have trusted Heaven, even if he’d returned, and he’d have Fallen again immediately. That’s why the Metatron offered. Because Aziraphale still wants to trust Heaven and Crowley never can again. Because the Metatron knew Crowley would say no. And the Metatron knew that even if Crowley accepted to stay with Aziraphale or to protect him, Crowley would be cast back Down in short order anyway. (“Does anyone ever ask for death?” The Metatron asks Nina.)

Would Crowley have chosen not to Fall, knowing what he knows now? Probably. But he did. He can’t go back. Neither could Satan.

Just a note or two for followers and bypassers

The info I post on my page is of the BOWYNN FAITH. It is not the beliefs of Wicca or other Pagan faiths. I got a couple of notes this morning slamming me saying the info I am posting is wrong. Point of fact - No it is not. It is of the beliefs of the Bowynn faith. It is NOT the beliefs of Wiccans, Hellenes, Nordic or Keltic. It is not the teachings of Buddha, Hindu or the Lakota.

So, if you are Wiccan and watching my page for more info for your Wiccan or Pagan faith, you are going to get very confused and find that the information is going to contradict Germanic and Keltic teachings. The meaning and pathways of elements will not be the same.

Also, I just need to stress, that the Bowynn faith is not a Cafeteria faith: You cannot pick and choose what fits your current belief and wedge it into your Saxon-Roman-Hermetic Pagan faith. Either embrace it in its totality or move on path.

After ten p.m. the television would be shut off and I would be left lying awake in bed, against my parents’ hopes that I should sleep, endeavoring to programme a television showing inside myself. There, in the diligent dark, I would imagine as hard as I could new, phantasmagorical adventures framed in a four by three aspect ratio, projected onto the cathode ray tubes behind my eyes. Every sound, every drop of rain or creak in the floorboards would remind me of an important, transfixing event that had occurred during my day, I imbuing it with a cosmographic meaning: a precious, shimmering artifact that slotted - or was to be slotted now, under the cover of night, by my diurnal over-accretion of imaginative powers - into the perfect, reasoned out star map of my life. My tiny, compact, meaningful life. I would close my eyes and find my universe exploding and recombining itself: now in blue velvet, now in the rhythm of a somber gait across puddles in the morning, now in the images of picture book crescents and pentagrams, steadfastly inked in delicate, undeviating line and diffused throughout with the nebulous, downy touch of watercolor, each star and constellation holding some esoteric meaning, like an abacus made out of blazing gemstones, in account of all my life so far.

Sometimes I got away with leaving the TV on ‘till eleven and even midnight, of course, but perhaps I preferred it better when I was made to sleep on time. With nobody to save me (I slept in my own room always, apart from my parents), I would struggle against my assailant always as a pleasurable act of motioning, by feigned resistance, to the notion, the possibility, of my total submission. He was already inside my room and under my white-blue sheets: he was me and no one else, he was my body heat, my insatiable urge for believable confabulations and for finding meaning, the most inebriating of the human vices, one less debasing but more rapacious than Lust herself. I would writhe and tangle, and feel consumed, in this chasm of the hypnagogia, by an infinitely more powerful version of myself: the totality of me, which was no more, really, than the totality of all that had transpired to me during the day, a saving grace from the present me who, like all little children, was oppressed by both past and future in horrid perpetuity.

This was, perhaps, the true reason why I could never fall asleep. Long after this solar flare of activity within the mind of a typically precocious child, when it came to be that my mind, without me sensing it, had ossified into a cold and hollow, porous rock, then I would continue to employ the habit, uselessly, of delaying my sleep for as long as I could, since I wanted, of course, to extend myself a little farther. I wanted five more minutes of listening to my sheets, of rubbing my skin across the plush blankets and imagining that the successive sensations of touch which they produced somehow shared a kinship with the successive strokes of pen on paper, that not just sound and sight were the privileged mediums of representation but that touch, also, shared in their ability. Yes, then, in those moments, I had a suspicion so heavy that it pressed the old, goose feather pillow terribly against my resting curls, I felt touch to be capable of a language of its own, which a mind like mine, so apt in the art of finding novel patterns, may humbly learn by simple supplication to its tactile prosody. I then went on, from this very likely conjecture and by reasonable induction, to the conclusion that all five saints which guided me through life, those whose names had been inscribed, in Hellenic script, over the arches of my sensorium, that all of them held this capacity to tell me all I asked of them, that they all could be reasoned with and reasoned through. I was afraid of going to sleep, in short, because I thought the world might die tomorrow and, if so, I would fail to see and talk to it just one last time. This estrangement from all I knew, I perceived as a fate far worse than any physical death. Since then, though this has no place in the beginning of my story, I gradually came to be haunted by dark suspicions that it is, in fact, a fate chillingly equivalent to really dying.

Saddened by the news of the Passing of Actor Louis Gossett Jr. (1936-2024)

Louis Gossett Jr., who won a supporting actor Oscar and an Emmy for his role in the seminal TV miniseries “Roots,” has died.

He was 87.

No cause of death was revealed.

Gossett broke through on the small screen as Fiddler in the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries “Roots.”

Gossett became the third Black Oscar nominee in the supporting actor category in 1983. He won for his performance as the intimidating Marine drill instructor in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” He also won a Golden Globe for the same role.

Gossett attended New York University on a basketball and drama scholarship. He was soon acting and singing on TV shows hosted by David Susskind, Ed Sullivan, Red Buttons, Merv Griffin, Jack Paar and Steve Allen.

Gossett became friendly with James Dean and studied acting with Marilyn Monroe, Martin Landau and Steve McQueen at an offshoot of the Actors Studio taught by Frank Silvera.

He made a series of guest appearances on such shows as “Bonanza,” “The Rockford Files,” “The Mod Squad,” “McCloud” and a memorable turn with Richard Pryor on “The Partridge Family” He also starred in series “The Young Rebels” The TV movie “Black Bart” based on Mel brooks “Blazing Saddles” and “The Lazarus Syndrome.”

Louis Cameron Gossett was born on May 27, 1936, in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, New York, to Louis Sr., a porter, and Hellen, a nurse. He later added Jr. to his name to honor his father.

He also is survived by sons Satie, a producer-director from his second marriage, and Sharron, a chef whom he adopted.

Gossett’s first marriage to Hattie Glascoe was annulled. His second, to Christina Mangosing, ended in divorce in 1975 as did his third to actor Cyndi James-Reese in 1992.

Hello! Just wondering when you devote time to a god/goddess do you “announce” (for lack of a better word) that you’re devoting the time of just do it

It depends on what I’m doing. When I’m doing Sudoku, for example, I spare a thought for Athena. When I do makeup, I spare a thought for Aphrodite or Artemis. The things I do Daily I don’t so much as announce as I do just spare a thought for them. They know when I’m doing these things even if they aren’t hearing me shout praise of some sort.

Though if I’d like to spend time with them, I prefer to set a candy or offering out that they like, for example, Hades appreciates when I give him Caramel, and then just put my phone away other than putting on some pagan music, and sit and talk with them or relax.

You don’t have to do it this way yourself, as my practice is not your practice and that’s what makes each devotee’s relationship with their gods/goddesses special and unique. However, they don’t mind that I do it, so if you did, I’m sure they wouldn’t either.
