Nations and Medical Treatment

I feel like nations in Hetalia don't have good histories with hospitals. Due to their mysterious functions and inhuman nature, it's difficult to find solutions to their complex medical issues. I have a list of headcanons on how nations are treated medically. tw for medical malpractice.

In the modern day, nations are usually assigned an extensively trained physician. Multiple nations often see the same doctor.

Certain hospitals that are frequented by nations are often equipped with trained staff. Training videos are provided to every hospital.

Anaesthesia was historically administered rather poorly to nation people. They were either given too little, none at all, or way too much based on biases on how nations tolerate pain. The latest publicized incident occurred in 2014, when America underwent an appendectomy without any anaesthesia. This event and the following lawsuit resulted in a bill being passed making it illegal to deny anaesthetic to nations.

Nations often have physical medical conditions confused for symptoms of being a nation, and vice versa. As a result, a nation’s concerns may be blown off as untreatable, while others are overmedicated for something that is caused by domestic events.

Female nations are less likely to receive proper treatment than male nations. The reasons behind this are due to the lack of studying on female nations as well as misogyny.

It’s a common occurrence for nation medicine to not be government approved or tested properly. Very rarely are nation medications actually tested on nations. They are usually run through human trials and then magnified to meet perceived “nation levels”. The largest ever recall for nation medicine was in 2010, when a popular anti-depressant was causing paradoxical side effects.

It’s a common occurrence for hospitals to turn away nations due to the perceived difficulty of treating one.

Many medical textbooks used for training doctors often perpetuate misinformation about proper treatments and dosages, such as the myth that nations have extremely high pain tolerances compared to humans.

Some doctors have expressed contempt for nations requiring medical assistance, believing it to be a “waste of time” due to overestimating their regeneration abilities. Another common belief is that nations are “seeking attention” so they can mimic human experiences.

Due to negative experiences with doctors, many nations have developed hospital-related anxieties and phobias. They often refuse to seek medical attention until it’s life-threatening.

Psychological issues are rarely treated properly. It's common for bosses and government officials to hold off on what they think is unnecessary treatment. Though not all nation psychiatrists are bad, many are only really interested in the paycheck.

I want to explain why HWS is more fitting for the series than APH.

APH doesn't represent the series as a whole very well. Hetalia may have once focused on that time, but it's always depicted other parts of history, too, like the American Revolution, the Seven Years War, the Chibitalia stuff, etc.

It makes sense that if Hima wanted to show lots of countries, cultural trivia, and moments in history then the name would change to reflect that, so the HWS rebranding makes a lot of sense. This series is about the world and all that happens on it, hence: Hetalia World Stars.

You can see this 'World' theme in all of the anime seasons' titles after APH as well: World Series. Beautiful World. World Twinkle. Then s7, World Stars.

So then why do we specifically use World Stars?

Despite how it may seem for anime-only fans, World Stars isn't a recent thing. The name was actually given to the series long ago.

APH is a webmanga that began as a oneshot in July 2006. It later continued as a full series that same year, and in 2008 began being adapted into printed manga tankōbon. In Sep 2011 the series began being serialized monthly in Comic Birz magazine, which ended in June 2013. In Sep 2014, the series relaunched in Shonen Jump Plus under the new title of Hetalia: World☆Stars.

This means Hetalia has officially been HWS longer than APH.

Hopefully I was able to provide some helpful information for those who didn't understand the shift! I look forward to the day most of us are on the same page. Less to tag that way, too.

The Battle of Grunwald: so basically in 1410 Poles with their king Jagiełło and their amazing Lithuanian allies defeated the Teutonic Order in a great battle and it became super symbolically important bc wahooo victory over the Germans (remember all of these were painted while Poland was partitioned). The guy in the white cape is the grand master of the Teutonic Order, the one in red in the middle is the Lithuanian ruler prince Vytautas. i feel like im back in my 2014 hetalia days

The Prussian Homage: blah blah the Teutonic Order evolved into the state of Prussia and in 1525 they decided to become the subjects of the Polish king. Another one nicely symbolic if you live in the 19th century and want to show the middle finger to the Prussians/Germans.

The Union of Lublin: basically when Poland and Lithuania became one country (Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) in 1569. The guy with the cross is the king Zygmunt II August (in the round 1 minigame we had Simmler's painting of him and his dying wife Barbara Radziwiłłówna)

Bathory at Pskov: Russian forces asking the king Stefan Batory for peace during the siege of Pskov (you guessed it, this one is to show the middle finger to the Russians). ngl i dont know shit about this period in history so. go read up on it on wikipedia. King Batory is the manspreading chad in the gold cape

Rejtan (The Fall of Poland): Tadeusz Rejtan was a deputy in the Partition Sejm of 1773 (basically russia going ''heyyyyy poland and lithuania, could you pls officially agree to give away like half of ur territories to us and prussia and austria'') (fr im having 2014 hetalia flashbacks writing this) and he hated it all so much he bared his chest about it and tried to not let the other deputies out of the chamber.

Constitution of 3 May 1791: first constitution in Europe, second in the world babeyyyy. big win for the Polish enlightenment. attempt to reform the country while it was at its lowest. many cool ideas. so cool that russia, prussia and austria felt it was time to wipe the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the map :/ so sadly there wasnt enough time for the reforms to work

What do you think about Finland x Norway? Or Finland x Denmark? I've been trying to think of ships with Finland that doesn't include Sweden and I think those 2 would be a good choice.

What is this, anon? You're spoiling me with these questions. I feel super interesting and important all of a sudden, hehe. No you're really sweet!!

I personally like NorFin! I'm always happy to see it around. Their personalities would work nicely together, and they have surprising historical and cultural connections. They'd seem like a chill couple. But then DenFin, I don't mind it, but I don't see them working as effortlessly. They're not as compatible or have as many connections to draw from. I guess my problem with Norway and Denmark is that there are way more characters to ship them with, so Finland isn't that high of a priority!

But damn, choosing my favorite Nordic is just impossible. I'm not saying this out of neutrality but because I literally cannot choose! Of course, I write about Finland a lot, but that's because I have access to information so I can share ideas and thoughts about him. But still, I don't think I'd call him my favorite character. I guess personality-wise, it's either Denmark or Sweden! I have a very clear vision in my head of what kind of people they are and what their relationships with other people are like; plus I can relate to both of their personalities. But when writing, I find myself analyzing Iceland the most. I have many ideas and thoughts about him, so perhaps he's my favorite character. He lives in my head rent-free. Like I said, I can't choose! They're all my favorites for different reasons!

When it comes to drawing, Denmark is definitely my favorite! His face has an interesting structure, it's almost like a square. I love drawing his smile lines and freckles. Of course, I enjoy drawing all of them, but some pose more of a challenge than others. For instance, Sweden's beard can be quite tricky to shape and draw.

I remember first being introduced to Hetalia around 2011-2012, but I think I actually started to interact with the fanbase around 2013-2014. That's when I made the first Tumblr blog, after all. So I've been here for way too long! Deciding on my favorite characters is challenging as they tend to change over time. But perhaps the Netherlands, Hungary, and Taiwan have stayed at the top of my list all this time. I'd also consider Egypt one of my favorites, which is perhaps surprising - he doesn't appear much in the series, but every time he does, I get so happy for some reason <3

Looking at her(?) post, myrddin is the incarnation of the stereotype of the american who thinks their country only do good vs the evils other dicatorships. I saw that post not long ago where she was talking about rusame fans and basically she saids it brushed her the wrong way that people where making content about this meanwhile russia is a pariah/mafia state waging a genocidal war since 2014 (or before if you go back to chechnya and georgia). Considering she lost a friend in ukraine it's understable that she has these feelings. The problem is that it became very hypocrite when someone pointed out that she don't gave a fuck about the countries her nation had destroyed and the thousands of civilians merely considered as collateral damage, (so it was kind of weird to ask people to cancel a country because they do horrible things but it surprisingly doesn't apply to your). And she answered by posting an article about a russian nationalist killed and called the poster a vatnik. adding the facts that often she post about nato that she considere a 100% peaceful organisation (hi libya and afhganistan who were NOT asked by UN),Usa (hi MeNa/LatAm), that people who posted about iraq war where russians trolls (no way it's people who gets hurt by us intervention, huh ?) everyone who disagree with her is paid by the kremlin and because usa are the 1st global power they should be kind of the world police. The myth of American benevolence and American exceptionalism is a plague lmao. Yeah as someone who's country (Philippines) was directly affected by American imperialism and who's suffering under American imperialism is constantly downplayed because of the myth of American exceptionalism I really don't appreciate any mention of America's imperialist reality being met with "YOU'RE A VATNIK! YOU'RE A RUSSIAN SPY!"

Yeah it's incredibly hypocritical to get mad at people for drawing hetalia Russia art because of the invasion of Ukraine but be completely fine with hetalia America art despite... Everything about America's imperialist legacy which persists to this day. The U.S helped implement a racial hierarchy system in the Philippines and the affects are still felt to this day. American imperialism/interventionism is still tearing people lives apart.

I do sympathise with the fact that they've lost a friend in Ukraine - that's terrible. However that doesn't mean that in some sort of logical sequence it then justifies running around with a blindfold on trying to ignore America's faults.

I admit that I get annoyed myself when people woobify Russia too much because surprise - I'm not a fan of the Russian state either (I despise it) despite the vatnik accusations, and I've been quite vocal about my distaste for their actions myself, but unless the content is crossing the line into Russian (or American) imperialist apologia, it's just content that annoys me/is annoying at the end of the day and that's that. By their logic they should not be America posting then? They hate rusame art/content because of Russian imperialism but... Nothing about American imperialism?

But wait - the U.S and NATO have done nothing wrong, right? And anyone and everyone who levels well founded criticisms at them MUST be being paid off by the Kremlin, right? I stumbled across somebody being disparaging about Hetalia (whoa blast from the past), which made me sad, because it undervalues what I remember of the fandom back in the day.

I haven't seen another fandom use the source material as a springboard quite so much since. Granted, I wasn't across all facets of it at the tender age of 14, so I'm probably just watching the metaphorical iceberg float by, but from what I remember, a lot of the fandom at the time looked at the source material, smiled and nodded and went "Hmm, yeah, but also, no, there's a better way of portraying this", and invested so much care, time, attention, and devoted interest in going off on their own and using their own fanfics/fanart/OCs/etc to explore so many fascinating aspects of history. Pre-Bronze Age China! Golden Horde Mongolia! Filipina rights in the 50s! 7th-11th century Russia! Celtic/Roman Gaul! World War Japan! Taiwan and Hong Kong! Civil War USA! The Metis in Canada! The Treaty of Waitangi!

Honestly, the most I remember of Hetalia from like 2011-2014 was the sheer unadulterated CREATION. It seemed like everybody was merrily making their own OCs, developing a deep passion and enthusiasm for history and obscure bits of trivia, and spreading knowledge around. I remember coming across the most gorgeously drawn Hetalia AMV about the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, for pete's sake, and thinking "whoa, this series looks so cool, I've got to check it out" - only to check out the actual series and go "??? Huh? Where's the drama? Where's the panache? Where's my amazing portraits of nations in a quasi-Neoclassical art style? Where's the epicness?" (and that's how you can tell it was 2012)

And now ... I've completely lost my train of thought. Something something fan creatives going above and beyond? Something about how certain stories/media are creatively inspiring? I think? Anyway.

Would You Follow Me! I️ have a little soft spot for this fic tbh even though I️ don’t interact with, watch or really even follow along DSMP content creators. It’s a sweet little fic!

I️ also love Quiet Day In as well, because it’s just soft and fluffy and cute! No stress, no qualms. Just love and affection and comfort 🥺

8. Have I️ received hate?

Hmm I’ve had criticism that I️ didn’t want or ask for, of which was very nicely put but was just unwarranted tbh. 99.9% of people who have read my stuff are very sweet and very kind. There’s been some comments way back in ye olden days where there was more criticism, mainly just because of how young I️ was when I️ started writing and the internet wasn’t as chill.

9. Do I️ write smut? And what kind?

Like once. I hated it and I’m so tempted to orphan that fic anyways because I️ don’t like it. I️ will probably never write it again tbh because I️ just don’t like writing it. Reading and writing it myself are two different things in my brain.

10. Do I️ write crossovers?

Nah, not really my cup of tea. It’s too much to juggle and I️ don’t really like crossover fics that I️ have read, so I️ don’t read them.

Probably. Honestly it would have been when way back in like 2012-2014 era of writing tbh.

I️ think someone has offered to translate a fic of mine but it never came about from what I️ know. I️ exist in a bubble tbh.

I️ think so?? When I️ was much much younger in my writing style, I️ think I️ co-wrote a warrior cats fanfic?? I have done a “finish the fic” story with one of my mutuals a while ago, if that counts.

Besties idk! I have jumped through so many fandoms in the time I’ve been in fandom that I️ have no clue what my all time favorite ship could possibly be. I️ just love fan works and appreciate the time and effort that goes into them.

15. A WIP I️’ll never finish?

Anything critical role related. I️ was in a two year writing slump and I️ started and quit a dozen fics when I️ was neck deep into C2.

16. Writing Strengths?

Probably fluff scenes in my opinion. Anything with a lot of prose and descriptives!

I️ also love writing angst and the hurt/comfort. The tumultuous emotions with an aching want to be held softly and treated like something precious. Mmm I️ love it!

17. Writing Weaknesses?

Fight scenes or anything really action packed. It’s surprisingly hard to make them flow without seeming repetitive or monotonous in my own experience.

Also smut scenes. Can’t write them to save my life. It’s for the same reasons as fighting scenes. It’s the same repetitive words and emotions that I️ just prefer skipping over them.

18. Do I️ like foreign language dialogue?

I️ think it’s fantastic! Love the incorporation of foreign languages whether it’s translated to English or not.

Oh boy… I️ think it was either Warrior Cats way back in like 2011??? That or twilight self-insert in that same era. 👀

My current WIP, Storm in the Pouring Rain is one that I️ am loving right now. It’s my baby! Otherwise, I️ love the style and flow of Half Past 3, How are You.

It’s hard for me to pick favorites, because they all reflect really well on where I️ am in my life, and they are all products of myself so I️ like most of my fics. Some are silly, some are sweet and some are really in-depth character studies or angst fics. They all bring a little something to my life that I️ love and appreciate.

I don't know if youve answered this before, but what made you come back? I'm not that old in the fandom, maybe half a year and it's so interesting how that fandom changed and how it used to be.

Thanks for the ask! I'm gonna be real with you, it was an accident. This is about to be a loooooooong ass post so I'm putting it beneath the cut:

It happened steadily in July. A very slippery slope.

I left in or around 2018 just because I lost interest. A friend in 7th grade introduced me to it in early 2014. I had been running my Instagram account since Summer of 2014 with my best friend (who at the time had been my partner, and by 2018 we had broken up) and our other friend. We'd all moved on and the account became dead. It wasn't a good account, but we'd amassed 1.1k followers during our tenure. Those were the days of if you wanted to post a comic, there were no Instagram slides. You had to post it all individually. The account was deleted in 2021? I think? 2020?

So come July 2023, I was poking around in my old Google Drive and found some of my old Hetalia stuff. Which included a fic with the aforementioned friends. It uh. Is not good. I reread it and oh boy is it a product of its time (we were probably 13-15 when we wrote it) and it was a 3 way POV that we all wrote with self insert characters. It was basically Heta characters get thrown in the setting of Outlast but with the plot of FNAF. Yeah. So uh. Not much to defend there. I jokingly went to my friends like "Hey, what if we rewrote this but not horrible" and we genuinely thought about it! For a night.

But for me it wasn't one night.

I kept thinking about it.

And one thing led to the next, I was revisiting old Youtube videos I liked and reread a fic I used to like.

I think what really did me in was listening to the character songs again and a couple of hetaloid covers. I was doing artfight and listening only to Hetalia music while I drew.

I genuinely did not really use my normal Tumblr before floralcrematorium came to be. I have an entirely separate account for personal stuff and art (I will not be sharing it) and it got to a point where I was seeking so much Hetalia stuff that I figured, why the fuck not, and eventually made an account. I also eventually made my first A03 account (I was on Wattpad and FFN back in the day) because someone wrote a CanUkr fic where Mattie had overexerted himself and was in the hospital and Katya and Alfred were going to kill him because he kept insisting he could work (I CANNOT FIND THIS FIC AGAIN, I FOUND IT ON TUMBLR ORIGINALLY, PLEASE HELP IF THIS RINGS A BELL!!).

And uh, so here I am!

I draw Hetalia stuff on occasion (I should... draw more considering that's what I went to college for but whatever) and have a couple of ideas for illustration series in my head.

I've got a lot of fic ideas I want to write. I have a literal list on my phone. I think about it in bed, at work, and little things remind me of Hetalia all the time.

I've gotten back into RP (I used to use Shamchat and Kik).

I've met so many cool people and I've been having a wonderful time being back so far. When I was originally in the fandom, I consumed a lot of content, but as far as mutuals went it was just me and my two friends. Meeting so many new people has been absolutely wonderful.

Hetalia is really the only fandom I've been in. I've liked other media and consumed fics/enjoyed art/bought prints (COUGH RWBY), but Hetalia is the only media I've ever had fan accounts for. It's the only media I've so deeply entrenched myself in that I feel comfortable writing fics. My walls used to be covered in Hetalia -- both official wall scrolls and shitty art I'd made myself (I have pictures I can attach at the end of the post). I had... so much merch. When I was 14 I only asked for Hetalia related things for my birthday. Every now and again I get that "am I doing the right thing?" ick because of the negative fandom reputation and reactions I'd get from people when I would admit to having liked Hetalia in the past, but I don't care about that now. Genuinely, fuck that. I like this piece of media whether I want to or not. I'm not going to be a self-hating Hetalia fan like I was in 2018-2021/22. I've come back to the show with completely different... motives? Idk what the right phrase is here -- I'm here to explore the characters of these little freaks (looking at you, Francis), I love all of the fanart I see, I like the exchange of historical and cultural information/resources.

Sure, I'd consider my fandom niche to be humanverse Francis and FACE fam, but I genuinely enjoy exploring outside of my corner of the fandom. I try to spread myself out -- I want to consume everything. I want to be exposed to everything.

Hetalia is one of the single most impactful pieces of media in my life. Without it, I wouldn't have my best friend, who broke up with me for APH Austria in 2015. The friends I ran the Instagram account with and I are all still in contact. I talk to one much more frequently than the other, but they are both so near and dear to my heart and I can't believe that this silly show is what got us to where we are. The youngest of us is about to graduate college a whole year early. I met her when she was 11 and I was 12 or 13? I couldn't be more proud of her, of the three of us, and it's been so fun to have these occasional nights where we (okay, just me) get tipsy and go through old fandom media/watch the dub and go ooooof. I was in a really bad place when I was originally into Hetalia. Coming back now feels like coming full circle.

The old fandom had plenty of its own issues, and the fandom now certainly isn't devoid of issues, but now that the fanbase has shifted to an older audience and I actually have like. Social skills. I love talking to other people. I like creating. I like thinking about these stupid characters before I go to bed.

My single favorite thing about the Hetalia fandom now is the care put into historical work as well as the exploration of portrayals of the characters. Because Hetalia lacks a plot and Hima is constantly retconning things, everyone has their own interpretations of everything. Everyone has their own version of Francis Bonnefoy, Yao Wang, or Alfred F. Jones. And that's so cool!!! You don't see that anywhere else.

I know I'm typically a pessimist on main, but I'm genuinely glad to be back. It's weird to be back. I've had mixed reactions from irl friends that I'm back.

But who the fuck cares?

I'm having fun, I'm making friends, and I can't believe there are still people here.

I genuinely hope I'm here for a while. I have so much I want to write. I want to draw all of the things my skill level was too low for back when I was a teen.

That drawing of Russia with Neko-Talia Russia? Yeah. Uh. I did that for an art project in the 7th grade for class. I also did a ceramics piece with the mochis, that I've since lost. These images scream "I'm 14 and like Hetalia in 2015."

I used to have little hearts with all the ships I liked in them (I think that's AusHun in the picture on the left?). I also had "I love you" written in like 20 languages on index cards taped above my headboard.

Being a young teenager in the old fandom certainly,,,, was something. I would not relive that, but by god would I do ANYTHING to get my favorite pieces of fan media back from that time. There was a video called "Hetalia What Did You Do To Panda" which was a bunch of clips from the anime with Katie Herzig's "Hey Na Na" playing in the background. Every now and then a dub audio clip would interject with the song.

I also really miss this one very specific Character Theme Songs video that had Poland in the thumbnail. Mein Gott would play between each song and I could tell you most of the songs that had been assigned to each character.

I would do ANYTHING to get those videos back. I miss them so much.

i got into hetalia in 2015! i watched it back in 2014 because my friend was into it, but i was really confused and dropped it after that one episode with the island and austria's piano and grandpa rome singing in the sky. but then i got into it really hard a year later and never lost interest! :3

i used to have an otp, for 7 long years, but i don't really anymore?? i'm too shy to talk about pairings i really like tbh. and i wouldn't say there's one particular pairing i'm diehard for, just some i love more than others. mostly i like ships involving veneziano, but there are a few i like that don't include him ^-^

after reading through this blog and its… interesting asks, I'm afraid this might be kind of a downer. but hey I wanna get this shit off my chest so might as well. in the age of us looking back on cringe shit and video essays on years-old fandom drama, I'm honestly surprised NOBODY has talked about the shitstorm that was the Feliciana Vargas FB page (if you have FB, look up Feliciana Vargas/N Italy and you'll probably find it - it's the page that has the orange-tinted pic of her cutting off a braided ponytail). it was a roleplay page by a girl named Mari (and a couple of co-mods who manned the fort), whose family was killed in a fire over Christmas 2011, then she had to testify in court against their murderer, who was sentenced to death. she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer shortly after and passed away in January 2012. exceeeept... one of the co-mods came out in 2014 and outright stated the whole thing was a fucking lie, that nobody died and the whole entire thing was puppeted by their co-mod Charity. in retrospect, it should've been obvious in that we never got ANYTHING to verify any of it. no obituaries, no news articles, I remember even trying to find news reports on a family dying in a fire (which you'd think would be international news???), and everyone involved refused to release any identifying information about Mari despite making a memorial page for her. not to mention all of this shit happening in the span OF A MONTH - but I remember it deeply impacted the Hetalia roleplay community at the time, and her last post in January 2012 still has several comments and likes bereaving her "death".

I guess there isn't much that can be done short of obsessively tracking down every single individual involved and asking them for answers (incredibly difficult because all of this happened well over a decade ago), but I'm still so disappointed that the community that rallied behind "Mari" were so badly manipulated and hurt by all of this. if anything, I just wish someone would shed light on this bullshit and at least give some closure to the people hurt by this. I know a lot of her roleplay partners and close friends were very publicly devastated by this.
