How to make an offline backup of your Minecraft Bedrock Realm World!

A friend of mine asked me if I could make a guide for how to do this, so here it is! I recommend everyone with active realm do this at-least once a month to keep a safe local copy of your Realm worlds!

This tutorial was done using a Windows 10 OS, but hopefully it will not be too different for other Operating systems. This procedure may also be possible on console versions but with some limitations.

Go to where you would normally head to play on your Realm, but instead of clicking "play", click "options".

Then, select "realm settings".

Click on the bottom left square showing your world, then select "edit world".

From here you can either download the world at its current state via "game settings" or download one of its backups buy clicking on the down arrow. I use the backups tab, myself. The auto backups are usually made when a player was last active so they should usually be completely up to date unless someone is currently playing.

Minecraft will run through a series of progress bars as it downloads the world backup to your hard drive. If your realm has addons, it will do some extra stuff too, I assume this is the process of "baking" the addons into your world save.

When that's all done, go to your list of local world saves, and your realm world should be the newest one. Select "edit" under its title.

Scroll down on general settings until you see "Export world" and click on that.

You will be asked if you want to clear player data. This is a bad idea generally, if you want to use this world for a realm again later, but it could be useful for some things such as player privacy if you're wanting to post the world up somewhere publicly.

Once you've made your choice, select in explorer where you want your world save to go.

Wait for the export to be finished and you're done!

Your exported file will be an MCWORLD file. This is an installer file that can be used to install the map onto any computer that has Minecraft Bedrock Edition installed. Now you can back this up somewhere safe, send a copy to your friends, or post it publicly online to show off your cool world to others! :)

I know, you’re on vacation and want to relax. But a little caution goes a long way. Use the safe if there is one, or get creative with hiding valuables. And please, don't leave your laptop sitting on the dining table when you head to the beach!

 5. Know Your Surroundings 

Take a stroll around the neighborhood during the day. Locate the nearest police station, hospital, and pharmacy. It's like having a mental safety net - hopefully, you won't need it, but it's comforting to have. 

6. Stay Connected 

Make sure your phone is always charged and you have a way to contact your host or local emergency services. Consider downloading offline maps of the area in case you lose signal. 

7. Fire Safety Matters

This one's often overlooked, but it's crucial. Locate fire extinguishers and check that smoke detectors are working. Know your escape routes, it takes just a minute but could be a lifesaver.

While most hosts are wonderful people, remember that you're still dealing with strangers. Be polite but cautious, and don't share more personal information than necessary. 

Remember, the goal isn't to be paranoid - it's to be prepared.

I did genuinely attempt to be ready to get to Maastricht early in the day to spend more time with former Italian roommate (FIR) but that obviously didn't happen. I am kinda glad though, because it takes 30 minutes to get to my faculty from her apartment and that would have been a pain to do multiple times in one day.

I met with my supervisor where we decided to do a fresh install of MATLAB because he said he remembers there being a checkbox I might need to tick. My laptop was still working on uninstalling when it was time for the lab meeting to start. He had another meeting at the same time, but walked me to mine because the room was different. I'm very grateful for that because I have no sense of direction and I find the building very confusing. It still takes me about 10 minutes to find my supervisor's office.

There were some familiar faces in the meeting, which I was happy about. Having to fiddle with my laptop every few minutes also gave me an outlet during the presentation. The PhD student presenting is also doing something with rhythms but her focus seems to be more on the default mode network. She's also using fMRI and eeg. Afterwards some of the other masters students were talking about how they think she and one of the other PhD students are hardcore flirting. This is at odds with the fact that one of the guys thinks he heard her say she has a boyfriend. Faulty information, a misreading of the situation, or a blossoming forbidden romance? Who's to say? I was able to contribute that I heard them talking about getting drinks later today. Suspicious, no?

FIR tried to meet me at the bus stop near her house, but my bus arrived sooner than she thought so I ended up wandering around with offline google maps while she stood at the bus stop. Eventually she spotted me and we headed inside. The first thing I did was set up my laptop to start downloading MATLAB and chatted a little. She made dinner, a spinach dish that I had loved before. She complained about her roommates a lot which I thought was pretty bold considering they were all in the house. They're all Italian, so it was like I stepped into a little Italian outpost in the middle of the Netherlands. I haven't met that many Italians at uni, but as soon as you know one person of a specific nationality you generally find out that people with similar backgrounds tend to flock to eachother. FIR didn't start out intending for a 100% italian household, but these things happen.

There were (of course) several bottles of wine in the kitchen. One immediately caught my eye due to the label's incredible graphic design. It has, what I presume to be, a drawing of Zeus/Jupiter staring angrily ahead with the words "ROMAGNA DOP SANGIOVESE SUPERIORE RISERVA 2020" on it in what i can only describe as a microsoft word style font. I made FIR take a photo of me with the bottle.

After dinner, we went into town to get some dessert. She suggested an Irish pub nearby that had some sticky toffee she wanted to try. They didn't have any when we got there, but they did have some sort of creme brulee dish. I paid as a thank you for hosting me, and got myself a ginger beer. She decided to try ginger ale because she's not the biggest fan of ginger but was curious, and ended up not minding it.

The dessert was interesting. It came in a bowl with the sugar topping snapped and crumbled on top. There was also fruits mixed it, I think maybe oranges and something else? Not sure. Everytime I felt I had decided if I liked it or not I would take another bite that would change my opinion.

Afterward, we went to this jazz club to hear live music. The band was incredible, and it was packed. We leaned against the windows in the back in front of a table with chairs that had long since been squeezed around other tables. While we listened, we spotted cards that had been left on every table that were "never have I ever." Armed with Google translate, we played, and I very quickly lost. This was just in time for the band to start playing Freedom '90, and everyone started going insane. We danced and sang along, and I tried to get at least one video of FIR dancing because she always takes photos of other people.

As we were leaving, FIR spotted her roommate walking with a girl she very excitedly told me was also American. The girl was from New York, buti could've guessed that without being told. Truly she emobided every single negative stereotype about New Yorkers, but I tried my best to be nice. I think FIR was expecting us to be instant besties, and seemed a little taken aback when that did not happen. Ah well.

As we walked back, we talked about school systems and how the only reason I am a grade ahead of FIR is because I did the America system. She doesn't like it when I talk about being older because we were born in the same year. We are only the same age for 2 and a half months out of the year. I did tell her, though, that the reason my parents decided not to put me in Japanese school was because they would have sorted me in the year below. I guess being a spring baby just means that everybody wants you in their class.

This week I looked at using WebSoilSurvey. As I explored the site, I had this tutorial up in a separate window to help me find my way around. The tutorial is broken down into segments, with the titles of each displayed on the time bar at the bottom (not sure exactly what the red progress bar is called on Youtube). This segmentation of the tutorial is helpful for going back later, as you don’t have to rewatch the whole video to find what you need help with. 

For this specific assignment, I took a look at Kualoa Ranch Nature Preserve since I am familiar with that particular area. I mapped out Mōli’i, an ancient but still active Hawaiian fishpond carbon dated around 800-1000 years old. This area boasts sustainable practices, and I was curious how that affected soil quality. Since I was not sure of the exact boundaries, I used the coastline and the road as guidance for creating my AoI. 

It also has the capabilities to import and use a preexisting shapefile, so those with more prior areas of interest from prior projects in GIS programs can import them into the site. However, I did not use this function. WebSoilSurvey also allows you to copy the link of your site to share with others or save it for future use. Here is the link for mine. Finally, you can also export your shapefile for future use. 

Moving on, I clicked the soil map tab and was presented with this map legend of the different soil types in the area. As you can see, I got lots of clay. 

Below is the map itself, with orange borders defining the boundary of different soil types and letters telling you what soil type is where. Well, except in the case of W which is just >40 acres of water. 

There are also ways to just download the soil survey for an entire town, but I did not use that application. However, as always, I’ll be filing that resource away for future worldbuilding projects. Get some semi-literal dirt under my nails to make different locations even more realistic from a biodiversity standpoint, even if I’m the only one who’d find it interesting. I’m sure Tolkien would have loved this, but I digress. 

You can go into the soil data further by clicking Soil Data Explorer which took me to “Suitabilities and Limitations for Use”. There you can see the ratings of the different soils, as seen below. 

As you can see, there’s also plenty of other limitations to explore. I poked around with a few, but some lacked definitive data for the selected area. More populous/well known areas would probably have better data, but I’ve noticed that Hawaii as a whole often lacks research compared to some areas in the Contentious US. 

Each information set also comes with a description at the bottom, making the maps very “beginner friendly” as see below with the example of drainage class. 

You can also do a custom soil survey, but I didn’t opt for that route for this assignment. However, as mentioned earlier, it will come in handy for future Worldbuilding endeavors. All of the data is downloadable, making it good for official reports or standard offline viewing for more casual users. 

Overall, the interface was simple and straightforward, making it very user friendly even to someone with zero experience (myself). It’s also easy to use even if you don’t have an advanced degree in something, which is good if you’re someone who happens to hyper-fixate on random facets of the natural world or are looking to craft a more believable world from a biodiversity standpoint. 10/10, would definitely recommend.

uuuntil tremors start happening around the island. turns out Herbert took that gear for a reason, and that reason was making the Earthquake Driller! he drilled around a bunch, making a maze for the player, and drilling through the Gift Shop’s foundation enough to make it fall underground, just to block your way. gotta love that villainous need to just,, inconvenience people. so once you (presumably) get back his map (I think you can do it without actually doing that? but don’t quote me there, I’ve never tried it) and find a way to lift the gift shop and keep it there, you can actually get to the polar bear meat of this mission! Herbert’s trying to steal from the boiler from well,, the boiler room. walking in on him distracts and upsets him, though, and he hits his wrench on one of the pipes... causing the boiler to shake violently. violence isn’t the answer, Herbert. apparently it’s overheating and gonna blow up! so, of course, Herbert hightails it out of there and you’re left to fix his mess.

mission 9 is just trying to track down Herbert, so he’s not really.. in? most of it? the parts he is in though... honestly, I’d just recommend watching it yourself. Herbert dancing is much better with visuals.

I really love this one bc it’s a fun story. we open with mission briefing from Gary (we’re supposed to keep a golden puffle statue safe at the Night Club), but then Herbert hacks into the PSA’s computers! pretty much just to gloat about how he used the camera from the last mission to hack in and that he’s also got a plan! but uh...

.... yeah, i think this speaks for itself.

THANKFULLY, though, this was all planned! Gary (and The Director) wanted this kind of slip-up, because this is all one big plot to capture Herbert! after you help JPG and Rookie with their preparations (and then get distracted by Klutzy), Herbert shows up at the Club to steal the Golden Puffle. dropping the cage on him seems to work until he just.. lifts it off. despite everything, he is a polar bear, and thus, is pretty strong. but joke’s on Herbert, because we have backup! and you can rely on either of your teammates to trap him again, either by shining the spotlights on the Electromagnet 3000′s solar panel to strengthen it, or by taking JPG’s jet pack and strapping it to the cage. either way, the cage gets slammed back onto Herbert. Gary comes in and goes through some options as to what to do with Herbert (ban him from the island, detain him in a holding cell, make him do community service, let him go because they’re nice (that one was a joke)), and the mission is over...

(fun? fact! the “first” time I played this mission I just kinda.. stole Guy’s jet pack and did Rookie’s solution anyways bc I 1: just meant to talk to him and 2: I didn’t realize that was a solution! sorry Guy, but you’re not getting it back.)

except it’s not over! Herbert demands one phone call and... well... Rookie gives him his Spy Phone. and he teleports out of there. cue mission 11! though since we’ve already gone through that, I’m not gonna re-explain The Veggie Villain. that’d just be redundant.

what we will get into real quick is the Battle of Doom! after a Medieval Party where Gary built a mechanical hydra to fight, Herbert took that robot for his own purposes and tried to attack the Everyday Phoning Facility with it. some damage was done to the exterior, but the robot was still pretty easy (and fun! I can attest!) to beat, and no damage was done to the EPF HQ. 

(fun fact! the music for this fight slaps.)

next comes Operation: Hibernation! the name is,, pretty self-explanatory, I’d say? gotta make the bear go to sleep. despite the fact that polar bears... uhhhhh... only do that sort of thing when pregnant? but that’s a can of worms I am going to throw RIGHT out the window. 

the writers later lampshaded that fact anyways. whatever. just add it to Herbert’s Un-Polar Bear-iness List. don’t look too far into this- it doesn’t make any sense either way. also I’ve spent way more time on this than it deserves.

and now let’s get into the final part here! which is going to be Very Fun to talk about! Operation: Blackout!
