body + mind (never let me go, ep. 3)

in episode 3, palm and nuengdiao are explicitly mapped onto the concepts of "body" and "mind," respectively. philosopher rene descartes argued that the body and mind are separate entities and that the mind (often thought to be superior/civilized) can live on without the body (often thought to be inferior/primitive). i don't know anything about philosophy, but in the context of never let me go, that's bullshit, and here's why.

in the opening scene of episode 3, nuengdiao and palm debate the relative merits of knowledge and physical abilities. nuengdiao argues that knowledge is more important because it won't deteriorate like one's physical body. palm counters this by proposing a hypothetical situation in which someone forgets things due to a concussion. the exchange is played for laughs, and is perhaps intended to cast palm as a "dumb jock" type, but ironically, palm is right. rather than being separate entities, the body and mind are intimately connected - if one is hurt, so is the other.

the metaphor extends nicely to palm and nuengdiao's relationship. nuengdiao says palm can be "the muscle" (body) and he will be "the brain" (mind). critically, palm's physical abilities are framed as just as important as nuengdiao's strategic capabilities. nuengdiao claims this makes them a "good match," and as the episode progresses, we see this synergy in action.

nuengdiao utilizes his quick wit to linguistically obliterate the kids making fun of palm in chinese class with a clever idiom, then tricks phum into revealing that he is behind all the pranks by leading him to take his necklace in a box with a gps-tracker. palm shows nuengdiao how to shoot a gun effectively and beats phum within an inch of his life :)

what's important here is that both nuengdiao and palm's skills are vital to taking down their common enemies. one cannot succeed without the other. similarly, one cannot be hurt without the other feeling hurt themselves, which is why they consistently stand up for each other. lastly, they can take each other's roles in order to protect one another. we see nuengdiao take on a physical role when he tackles phum (preventing him from hitting palm with a bat), and we see palm take on a strategic role with his (probably justified) suspicion of ben.

so: while it might seem like they are two different entities, the body (palm) and mind (nuengdiao) are really both essential parts of the same, integrated system. one cannot live on without the other.

first off I just wanna say Happy New Year!! I only just joined last month but I am so overwhelmed and grateful for all the support I have received so far 🥲💞

I am so sorry that i keep dropping art and disappearing every other week this app does not work on my phone so I avoid it like the plague and also I get really anxious whenever I leave a post tgat I know a ton of random strangers r going to see I know it's not that big a deal and I do like sharing art but I also do not wish to be perceived 🙈💕

Genshin fans ignore me on every other social media I have so let's see what happens here I haven't played this game either I just think the characters r pretty and fun to draw sometimes I love seeing ppl come up with headcanons and interactions for them but unfortunately I am Not That Cool,,

I will never be a genshin fanartist account on Instagram with 125k followers but that's okay at least I can admire them from afar 💖 I will just be in the corner doing my own thing and if u wanna come over too that's awesome I love sharing my little bits of serotonin :))

It was so funny going out with my wife and her gf last night cuz my wife is just. tall and her gf was wearing like platform heels that made her even taller than my wife and I was frolicking alongside them almost a foot shorter than both of them like a gnome among goddesses
