hi the wip for this was absolutely not supposed to blow up. why does that have 1k notes. horrifying. anyways!!!! it’s update time baby!!!! 64 new assets this time around!
so that’s what the caption was supposed to be. this update was already pretty damn big and took a ton of time to make!!! and i was finally done!! but then my hand slipped and now we’re at 143 new assets. super sorry for the delay! That Was Not Supposed To Happen.
i’ll go more indepth below the cut, but this update encompasses all menu/profile art for both isat and sasasaap, battle portraits for sasasaap, every single pixel icon in isat (to my knowledge anyways), the dialogue skipping animations, and a few miscellaneous additions.
also i spent too much time on these to put them below the cut so Please God Look At My Icon Resprites I Spent 16 Hours On Them. enjoy!

okay first things first. why the hell is this batch 143 assets. so. i HEAVILY underestimated how many times the menu drawings are used in the games. even removing all of the custom art, it’s still ≈30-40 variations! that’s a lot! and once i finally finished everything, i got Posting Anxiety and somehow convinced myself that attempting Animation And Pixel Art (two things i haven’t done in YEARS) would be easier than writing a normal post. so here we are.
the custom art here is pretty much par for the course at this point. extra menu art for bonnie, extra expressions for the party in act 5, we’ve done this enough times that it’s expected. i am aware that bonnie’s custom menu art gets completely covered by the ui. i kept it in because it’s really funny (and also i didn’t feel like extending the sprite (but then the sasasaap version forced me to extend the sprite anyways so Whartever)).
once again, provided a spritesheet for sasasaap’s battle portraits! i do intend to cover both games, it’s just a slightly lower priority atm. unlike isat though, i’ve got Less (read “No”) experience with sasasaap, so there might be more issues with those assets?? apologies if there are, i’ll try to fix any issues that come up!
the Miscellaneous Additions i mentioned above are the sprites used on the teleport map and the loading screen, which is just a tiny version of the skipping animation. they were pretty small, so i figured i might as well get them out of the way!
not actually much to say about the 75 icons surprisingly! i haven’t done pixel art in about 5 years?? and that’s a Travesty actually these were super fun to make. i did make mockups for the overworld sprites earlier, but they aren’t Officially part of the redraws (yet) so they’re getting posted seperately
and also!! some exciting news!! this project might actually become a Proper Published Mod pretty soon!! i’ve been in contact with someone who’s willing to help me get everything set up, and i’ll be getting a Usable Computer around the end of the year!!!! it’ll still be at least a month before it’s up (i’d like to get the enemy art finished beforehand wauaua) but!!! still exciting!

been trying to do some pixel art bc after putting another 60+ hours into stardew valley the want to make a stardew like game but *my* way is strong again ... but i keep getting hung up on thinking about game mechanics (screenshot at the bottom .. sorry for makign this so long again ..)
at some point i thought the whole minecraft aspect is probably impossible to add into a 2d pixel game and im better off to cut that idea out of my head and instead make a dedicated area in which you can build stuff more costumizable and make the rest a more static thing id built so the worlds have more character and theres less problems with NPC pathing (since i dont want you to be able to escape Eadryas wrath if you overstay your welcome by building yourself into a circle or collision boxes .... though they would destroy anything in their path to you either way.. still)
but then i still want you to be able to change the ground in your little area (or maybe multiple ... idk im still conflicted bc i like the idea of finding a place and building your lil hut there ... unless i make it so you can build a hut anywhere but change the ground tiles only in certain areas ... ) and build little ponds and stuff ... so im back to the minecraft in 2d problem
i keep getting into these thinking spirals bc i dont want to draw all those sprites if im gonna scrap it all again anyway
the main point with this little ...... well, lets call it fantasy bc im not confident this 'project' will fare any better than any of my other projects (im a never finished a single project and keeps being haunted by it kind of guy and i hate it)
- is that i want a 2d game somewhat similar to stardew but set in my original story world and focused on the environment and nature, not on earning money, an intricate weather system and no time limit on your day, the twist being you are an ex-demon hunter and are on probation to prove you really abandoned the cause, given shelter and a place to stay in the demon world within the protective bubbles around gates into the human realm (bc humans cannot live in the normal environment of the demon world- this is an already long established thing but works extremely well to limit the space you are able to go in a game without making the world feel tiny plus allows me to give you several different environment designs bc those are gates and bubbles in different parts of the demon world) your task being to help clean up the poisoned land the celestials had caused and repopulating these parts with plants etc. ... there is a tracker that lets you know how well or bad it is doing and if you only destroy instead of restore (like chopping down all trees without planting new ones) you will be given warnings until Eadrya shows up and kills you since you are clearly still working to destroy their lands after all
i still really like this idea but im really doubtful it will go anywhere since i am so slow, need to learn at least two complicated new things (coding, music making) and already have so many things i want to do but never really .. do, the task is just too daunting and it keeps me from just having fun drawing pixel art bc i cant stop (over)thinking about mechanics
(see this is what i mean my brain just cant stop, it just keeps going and it keeps making me spiral into these thinking loops that prevent me from actually doing anything )
this is the same file i have been randomly doodling sprites on since april (by far not the only one, but the current one of multiple sprite tests i keep updating or changing)

Two guys with amnesia wake up at an abandoned hospital all alone and find out from their profiles lying around on the ground that one of them is a genius researcher and the other is a homicidal maniac that killed their whole family and all the power rangers and they're handcuffed together and solve puzzles and shit (while handcuffed together) so they can escape that's the synopsis. There's like shit ton of endings but also it's all on youtube so If you don't care then they're all on youtube..

1. You don't have to be very skilled to process through it + yeah it's horror but it's not like SCARY horror
The only mechanics are to 1. walk around 2. click things to make them do stuff 3. Collect Their Pages . There is like one chase scene that I miraculously survived first try while not knowing what the hell I'm doing cause my game took mercy upon me and bugged but you just gonna dodge the rpg sprite and run around to hide in another room so It can't be that hard . Also if you set your "Tracker" setting to 0 then this is literally the only time ur gonna get chased anyway. Whatever you do do NOT set the Tracker to anything other than 0 this is for your own sanity you won't make it
Also yeah it's like. Horror and stuff cause there is gore (that is just pixel blood + descriptions, and you can turn off the imagery anyway) and "dark" subjects (like the aforementioned. Cannibalism) but there's nothing like. Creepy on screen and no jumpscares. Trust me on this because I am a wimp and if there was anything I thought was Scary then I wouldn't be here talking to you I would be on the floor shaking and crying with a knife to my chest. I literally get scared of Minecraft mobs
Ok so the closest thing to Scary in it would be like, some Tense scenes where you have a timer and you gotta hide before Jeff the Killer eats you or when you get chased that one time. Which was terrible for my heartrate but also it's not that hard + It's me I literally get scared of Minecraft mobs
2. It's actually like. Really Good. Like it's good you guyssss

It starts off kinda slow but once you get there then you Get There. I have a pipe bomb duct-taped to my peanits in the shape of The Red Hair Guy From Zeno. Also it's like really really gay. Like it's wayyy more intimate than if they just kissed like normal people. According to some tumblr user the creator once drew them sucking each others tits which is big if true but I could not actually find that anywhere. Also the music is like really good . Vomiting/Emetophobia (nothing shown and there's no sounds though, it just Happens at one point) Loud banging sounds (right after the throwing up scene) Protag makes some ableist comments but stops completely once [REDACTED], there's also another guy(s) saying similiar stuff but it's pretty clear they're being written to be assholes about it on purpose Suicide via gunshot in one ending (below is a google doc which has guides to all the endings, and lists which one this is so you can avoid it if you want) Screen flashing (^also in like, one route that's also listed there) Unrequited kid crushing on an adult (in some of the routes) Unrequited pseudo-incest ??? Do you know why frisk is that color in game? Because i dont. Putting them next to chara really emphasises the...yellow-ness in a way i never fully realized before.
I will never truly know why Toby made Frisk (and Kris because they share the same color code) this way. Everything I say will only be hypotheses and possibilities.
Firstly, it's not something he ever addressed as far as I am aware. So I feel like it's something he ignores, sweeps under the rug, or is genuinely not aware about (somehow), assuming that people have tried to bring this up with him..?
If I were to speculate, though, I am guessing that (especially because Toby Fox is western/American) it is a few things: the most likely reason is because of the normalization of western cartoons being yellow, especially because of the Simpsons (The Simpsons were made yellow to be eye-catching). So he probably wanted Frisk to be eye-catching. He may have messed around with orange too, but settled for yellow.

I don't find this completely excusable, because of the fact that Frisk is paired with what a lot of people has interpreted as "squinted eyes" or "closed eyes", so it encourages people/fans to draw content of Frisk as yellow-skinned with squinted/closed eyes. That's why there was a strong movement for fan-artists before, to draw the humans as without yellow skin, because it seems like Toby Fox won't be acknowledging this any time soon.
A lot of why this is so frustrating is because while one can argue about Frisk being pixels all day, their pixels will not stop people from making fan art of Frisk with realistic styles and proportions, even if they are cartoon-y, with all these features combined. It's hard to watch.
The second possible reason is to be racially ambiguous, but because Toby Fox never claimed any of this, it's only speculation. I personally think that he might not have even thought that far ahead since UnderTale was meant to be a simple game for him.
Either way, here's a Tumblr post on why racial ambiguity doesn't help anyone even if it's well-intentioned.
The first paragraph of the linked post hurts because the argument being presented to us in the past few days have been "A lot of people HC Frisk as White" which is exactly the point of this frustrating thing, but that is no longer relevant to your question.

What's your favorite game you played this year?
You've activated my “review of my year in gaming” trap card! I was already going to make this post in some form or another, you've just given me the perfect launching point. So, the first thing you should know about asking me for favorites: I never give just one. How could I, when it's been such a banger year of games? (Heads up, this one's going to go long.)
I loved Tears of the Kingdom to death, and it took home my most hours played on Switch. It is a shining example of what devs can do with an extra few months to polish a game. There were so many remarkable moments that testified to how much care and ideas the devs were able to put in. I loved how it used the time since the first game to develop familiar places and characters, adding depth (no pun intended) and also making sure every familiar location had some new twist. The story was a much stronger followup to BotW, and I think this overall has my new favorite ending sequence of anything in the series (I'd love to make a full post sometime about how the final Ganondorf battles just keep getting more spectacular with each new title). I am so, so, so, so normal about this incarnation of Princess Zelda. 
Also in my favorites this year is Fire Emblem Engage, which hit at just the right time to scratch my strategy itch. As a long time FE fan it’s not a surprise I enjoyed this one- though it lost the political intrigue of its predecessor in favor of a more traditional/tropey story, I still had a lot of fun with all its gimmicks and gameplay innovations. Also it is hands-down the most visually appealing game in the franchise, a title previously held by the series’ GBA entries which are masterworks from the peak era of beautiful sprite art. From the incredible crit animations to the spectacle of super attacks to the battle maps which are so beautifully detailed that the game lets you free roam around them after a battle just to appreciate them better. 
I finished the Link’s Awakening remake this year! It was a charming trip back to an older era of Zelda design philosophy and I found it fascinating to compare the ways where the classic puzzles and challenges differ from what the game would be like if it were made today, as well as the places where modern technology allowed for better QoL changes that weren’t in the original. I really enjoyed the music as well, which I find to be a standout among the series still.
Here at the end of the year, I have to give a shout out to Sea of Stars. It has everything you want in an indie darling- very pretty pixel art, very nice music, turn-based battles with timed hits I joke, but Sea of Stars does a great job balancing evoking/paying homage to icons like Chrono Trigger and bringing new gameplay to the JRPG formula. I like its pared-down take on JRPG combat which revamps skills/mana into a much more dynamic resource that’s constantly being spent and regenerated, and I’m a known sucker for character combo attacks which this game has in spades. The later parts of its story are told with a lot of heart, and again I am a known sucker for certain character archetypes. Surprisingly also, I think the movement and exploration is absolutely a standout- not something that’s typically emphasized in the genre. But this game constantly has you hopping across stepping stones, balancing on tightropes, climbing walls and ledges… the emphasis on interesting traversal and verticality is a strength few games like it can boast. 
Before my final pick, I’m including a special section for all the games I didn't play myself but watched my friends play and still want to praise: Hi-Fi Rush, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Mario Bros Wonder, Pizza Tower, the Minish Cap Switch rerelease, and more all came out this year and all of them have brought killer music, excellent gameplay, and stunning visuals that I’ve enjoyed to no end. Anyone considering to pick up any of them would find a quality product without a doubt.
With all that said: I think ultimately it has to be Tunic in the end. Underneath its premise of a Zelda/Souls-like adventure game there is a wealth of secrets that goes as far down as you have the courage to delve. It’s a game built to evoke nostalgia for games that you didn’t understand yet, posing as a game that you watched an older sibling play or a game you could only find a poorly-translated foreign copy of. It obscures everything and teaches you its secrets through context, exploration, and discovering in-game pages of the manual (remember manuals?). It’s a game made for lovers of secrets and puzzles, full of hidden paths and trophies that reward inquisitiveness and observation (and taking paper notes). It was when I saw that it not only has a conlang, but that it gives you the hints you need to fully translate it, that I knew I had to get it myself. It spurred me to screenshot every in-game piece of menu text, then spend evenings cross-referencing it to identify phonemes and construct a key.
The rush I got on completing that key is one of two moments I knew this game was absolutely special. The second standout moment is when the game teaches you its hugest secret, and then invites you to prove your mastery of it by presenting you a huge, multi-part puzzle. But, Tunic does the same thing that one of my other all-time favorites, Outer Wilds, does so well: powerups via knowledge, “unlocking” abilities that you always had, you just didn’t know that you did. The pieces to this puzzle are hidden in plain sight; it’s only when the game tells you what you’re looking for that your understanding shifts, everything clicks, and your eyes are opened to the path you have to follow. I don’t say it lightly, but I consider Tunic to be a one-of-a-kind title, and one that delivers completely on its unique vision. 
In case that brick of text doesn’t make it clear, I love this game. 
I love all of these games.
It's a fine time to be alive.

Character Design and Animations:
These images all represent my character design for my game. When I thought about how to design this character I had to think about the whole balancing ideology. This is why I designed a man who balances different objects whilst riding a unicycle. The main designs I had to focus on were the idle, Tilting left and right, Falling (L&R), Death (L&R) and peddling with both feet. I am very happy with how these designs turned out and I look forward to seeing them used in the final product of this game.

Idle: This design was the main foundations for the others. With this design, I had to be symmetrical with balance in mind. I also tried to design the arms so they would be outstretched and the hand were held out to hold the stacks of objects. With the facial design, I tried to make my character look old fashioned so people would look at him and know he is a veteran of this sport.

Tilt Right: This next design was fairly difficult despite me only having to change one thing which was the arms. To do this, I had to rotate the arms to a fairly balanceable angle using CTRL + T thinking about how my character would balance the objects in such a precarious position. I found an issue when doing this in which the arms went blurry as this happens when you rotate pixels on photoshop because they're square designs. This was easily fixable by readding the cubes in slightly different areas to make it look like the arms had moved

Tilt Left: This was probably the easiest design as all I had to do was flip the previous design horizontally creating a smooth and identical design.

Falling (L&R): This animation was hard as I had to actually throw the character off the bike and completely change the arm positions. I first took off the arms and my character off the bike. I then tried rebuilding them shorter and more upward so that it looked like the character was falling. I also changed his facial expression as well. I wanted him to look shocked and scared. To do this, I added a black square to create a mouth open effect and then raised the eyebrows as well as expanded the pupils.

Death (L&R): The final design I did was the Death design. Based on the rules for this game, the character isn't actually dead but I will abbreviate it as this to make things easier. This was the most difficult design because I had to actually design my character so they were on the floor. To do this I used the same legs and changed the angle of them to represent the state of my character. I also used the same head and positioned it so it was on the floor and gave the character cross eyes as well as a tongue sticking out to make the character looked "dazed" and "Confused". The biggest challenge for me and this design was recreating the whole body and arms from scratch. I did this because I would have struggled to use the normal body design in this state. I designed this part so the back was arched over and the hands were flat on the ground so it looked like he had just made contact with the floor. I also morphed the bike on the floor so it looked damaged from the crushing impact.

Sprite Sheet: This was the Sprite Sheet that I made in order to import each of these designs into UE5 to use them for my player character and their animations. I did change some of the animations but only once I'd imported them into Unreal.

Sprites Extracted: These were the sprites I extracted once I'd imported the sheet in UE5. To do this, I applied paper 2D settings to the sheet and then extracted the sprites by right clicking and going to sprite actions.

Animations:
Idle: The Idle animation was quite basic. I used two different sprites with each of the feet peddles either way round. I then changed the speed to 6.0 frames per second so the speed of the peddling was smooth.
Tilt L&R: For both of these animations I was able to keep the arms in their respective directions. However, I once again had to make it so the feet of my player character were still peddling. I will eventually plan to make the animations so that when I move in a direction, my player will move left or right and then when finished it will return to the idle animation.
Falling L&R: These next animations only consist of one frame for each side. I plan to play these when my player character is on the verge of falling of the unicycle once it reaches a certain point.
Death: This animation is quite unique as I am not using it either way. I plan to add ragdoll physics so when this still image plays it launches in a certain direction depending on what way the character falls.
Adding My Character to the Viewport: This is my player character added to the viewport of the blueprint. I had to increase the size of the character to 3.0 on each axis so it was a similar size to the default mannequin you get at the start. All the boxes around the player are the different collision boxes that will allow my player character to balance the objects.

pretty muuch everyone in the cast has some minor inconsistencies between their artbook cover artwork, ingame art work, and sprites. (this is INCREDIBLY nitpicky i do not care thaat much.. but still. wanna point it out. also i am DEFINITELY missing things i am not going too in depth here i am soo eepy)

WILLDLY inconsistent between artworks, even in the game itself. (im NOT getting into other official artworks here but . her shoes too i believe tend to not stick too one design)

yup!! that’s a lil habit!! looks like habit has already spawned even though i just got finished talking to kamal about opening up the tunnel for the ending. i tried getting a better shot but with not much success due to, y’know, perspective and things in the way.
what can we do with this information? well, it seems his default sprite might be this one from what i can see from the few pixels we have, mostly because he only has two sprites that stand upright from his dentist-outfit which i can tell he’s in. and i can’t see green pixels where his hands would be under his chin on one of the other sprites so it must be this one:

it also reveals that his sprite spawns in much earlier than I would’ve thought- right after you tell Kamal it’s time to open the tunnel to habit’s office. personally i would’ve thought he spawned in as soon as you wake up after his last puppet PSA, but nope!
maybe none of you care, but i am a bit of a video game nerd and fanatic and therefore i find this stuff interesting.
... oh, by the way, after completing it i noticed the credits still has Day Lane’s deadname, so. oof.

For the first time ever, I am having to play a backup character. I saw this coming when we started Curse of Strahd, and I was a bit torn on what exactly to play. I thought at first I might play one of my exiting characters, but then the thought of playing a native Barovian crossed my mind, and I loved that idea too much to not go for it. Idalia Alastroi is a Barovian and a member of the Keepers of the Feather. She is a Beast Master Ranger/Arcane Archer Fighter. Normally she wears an eyepatch, as she is quite self-conscious about her eye. Her companion is Hook, a black phase wolf. He looks scary, but he's really a big softie, at least for Idalia. Her family was killed by monsters (Perhaps werewolves?), and her scar and damaged eye is proof that she is the only one who survived. Having ben born in Barovia, a land of loss and despair and oppressive fog, Idalia is a pragmatist. She knows she can never leave, and that Strahd will likely rule over them forever. But she can't help but be curious about the outside world, and enjoys hearing stories about it. She's also very jaded, and is not surprised by much of the horrors of Barovia anymore. She's going to be alot of fun to play, and I can't wait. Another attempt at a pixel and I think I'm getting pretty good at these~! This is Idalia Alastroi, my backup character for our streamed Curse of Strahd game. Seriously I am very happy with how she came out. Plus her wolf. Probably the easiest pixel I have made so far, and I don't know if it was just that he had less detail or if I'm just better with animals. But! Here is Hook. You hummed, gently tracing a finger across your television screen as the familiar menu music played oh-so beautifully. It was truly the peak of music in your eyes, not that it had any right to be anything but however. What would you do if the game that inhabited your beloved soulmate was anything but remarkable? It would be nothing short of blasphemy, that was to be for certain.
Under any other circumstance, you'd be turning this game on simply to see the man that made your entire universe go round. To just talk to him, read those dialogue screens with the same amount of interest you had before you memorized everything the absolute angel had to say, to just be in his presence for as long as you could. Every second you spent around him made your world feel a little bit purer, he made everything feel like it was going to be okay.
Today, however, marked the day that you would be the one giving to him, instead of just he giving everything he could to you. It broke your heart that you couldn't do anything to repay Senpai for his kindness, almost as much as it broke your heart when you forced yourself to obtain a negative game ending for curiosities sake. Your body fell under a deep, agonizing sickness every time you even pondered about whether or not Senpai realize how truly adored he was. That is why you did everything in your power to make sure you could show your love to him.
You went through every library in your area and even beyond that reading various literature pieces regarding dimensional travel, as you assumed that is what it would take to finally be with him physically in his very world. By the time a few days passed, you considered yourself a master of the subject.
Your once clean desk was now cluttered and messy as you went over a final draft for your plans. It was simple, really, to simple. It was quite inconvenient that you only had to rely on books that were written before video games were even established on the consumer market, but it would have to do. Search engines were deemed unreliable from the minute you began doing your research on them - believing that you were intending to enter the video game industry rather than physically entering the universe of a certain title.
Eventually, you stood in front of Senpai with grand confidence, and with a promise to fufil. Soon, you'd be within his physical reach. He was smiling at you, saying words of such love and adoration, as if he was breaking through the bounds of the games script just to praise you for your hard work. Within the next hour, you'd have paid your debt to your beloved. His hard work and determination to make this relationship work would finally be appreciated by his one true love.
Giving the pixelated figure a gentle kiss, you laid back on the floor and relaxed your entire body, thinking solely of who you were trying to meet and exactly what you wanted to accomplish. You remembered reading in one of your covered books that the main method of dimensional travel was complete detachment from your physical self in this reality. Of course, your fears of not being able to meet Sen were immediately eased, considering you felt you have long mastered the art of depersonalization.
Soon, you felt yourself grow tired. Maybe that was a sign everything was falling in to place, or maybe it was just your lack of proper sleep catching up to you the moment it saw the opportunity. You hoped the second reason wasn't the case, and you quickly focused your thoughts back onto your goals as everything faded into a calming black.
You truly had no way of knowing how long you were out for, but what you did know was that the climate felt noticably different from your room. The air felt pure, clean and just the perfect amount of coldness to make breathing a genuinely enjoyable necessity. As soon as your eyes opened, you were met with a figure standing closely in front of your face. Upon waking up just for a few more seconds, your eyes quickly widened and your heart began to pound in an extremely fast paced rythem. It was him. It was your cherished, beloved Senpai.
"Ah, there you are!" He sighed in relif, gently patting your head as he gave you a reassuring smile. "I thought you'd never wake up, I was so worried!"
"Sen-Senpai?!" You immediately sat up, prompting him to give you a soft laugh as he sat you back down into a more relaxed position. He hummed and nodded his head, looking at you with a look of such elegant care that it made your heart completely swell.
"I appreciate you being so happy to see me dear, but I can't have you moving too much after you just woke up. It must have been a nasty fall for you to be out for so long..." He gave you a slight pout, and you stared at him for a moment whist blinking.
For some reason, he didn't seem as...happy to see you as you would have expected. You wanted to feel a form of disappointment, but everything had its reason, and you had to ask Senpai before making assumptions.
"Sen...do you know who I am?"
You asked, and all he did was tilt his head. "Well, no, I assumed you were a new student at first..." He gave a nervous giggle, before rubbing the back of his neck. "Have we...met before...?"
Your heart sunk. He didn't...he didn't remember you? No, that couldn't have been the case. The love the two of you felt was too strong for him to just forget. Maybe something needed to just jog his memory.
"M-my name is (Y/N), I told you my name was (N/N), we spent entire days together, I got all of your games endings, we've been through so much together Sen! Please, try and remember!" The desperation in your voice was as clear as day, and even Senpai felt it. He looked down for a moment, trying to throw your name through every inch of his mind. Until, he hit a mark.
All those times he spent with you, the good, the bad, everything you gave to him and everything you did for him. It was you! His player, his (Y/N)! Suddenly, you saw his eyes brighten and tears prick his pretty blue eyes. Letting out a choked gasp of pure bliss, he threw himself into your arms and pressed his forehead lovingly against yours. Of course, you immediately wrapped your arms around his perfect form, peppering him with as many kisses as you could manage and moving your arms up to be able to run your fingers through his hair. It was just as soft as his game sprites made it look. Absolutely perfection. You knew you had no reason to worry, you just needed to jog Senpai's memory a bit. After all, how could he forget the love of his life?
"I-I can't believe I'm finally able to meet you, (Y/N)..." He said, his normally perfectly silky voice trembling with euphoria. "Please...never leave me..." A soft sniffle could be heard as he nuzzled his head into you and completely laid himself onto you, and you promptly gripped him as tightly as you could without bringing him harm.
"Don't you worry, Senpai..."
You said, leaning back slightly to be able to look him in his pretty eyes. You made him a promise from the moment you saw him, and you could never even think of letting a person as pure and perfect as Senpai down.
"I'll be by your side forever." Kissing him gently on the top of his head, you smiled and rested your cheek upon it. "I wouldn't dare let anything tear us apart."

Pinch Reviews: Slipstream
Slipstream, released in 2018 from Brazilian indie developer "ansdor games" is an Outrun inspired arcade racer inspired by all the goodness of the era of it's inspiration's release.

Packed to the brim with 90's nostalgia, iconography, cars, and writing styles, Slipstream serves as an excellent modernization of a classic genre, modernized for current audiences.
Slipstream is a racing game where you drive one of five cars and attempt to fight your way to the front of the pack in a multitude of different gamemodes across multiple tracks. You can accelerate, brake, turn, drift, and rewind time up to 5 seconds based on a meter that's filled by your continued ability to perform well. Additionally, as is the namesake of the game, players and other racers can drive behind a racer ahead of them in order to remove drag from their vehicle, and gain speed to pass the person they tailed, or slipstream them.
This game's simple but effective controls and mechanics make it a dream to pick up and play, but incredibly fun over long periods of time as well, as truly racing in this game Never gets old. It's consistently incredibly fun regardless of the mode to try to optimize your line around the multiple beautiful tracks at hand, and the sensation of speed given in this game is awesome.

More than the substance of this game, this game is *stylish.* Slipstream knows its influences very well, and utilizes just the right amount of the "crust" found in the older titles that it references and pays homage to and implements it in an incredibly tasteful, unobtrusive way. My favorite examples of this game's presentation being amazing are primarily in the varying optional settings to apply CRT and NTSC filtering effects to the game, as well as a similar setting for screen tilt on turns. I find that these optional settings were the moment I looked at the game and said "this guy gets it!"
The other, more traditional, aspects of the presentation that I found myself falling in love with are of course, the retro style found in the excellent pixel art, and intentional lack of anti-aliasing to accurately call back to the nostalgic past this game loves. In character sprites, car sprites, backgrounds, UI, menuing, and everything in-between, Slipstream is nostalgia implemented the best it possibly can be.
My other favorite feature of the game is the rival system, in which every race, in specific modes where it's enabled, a specific racer will appear ahead of you, provide taunting dialogue, and serve as a short term goal to beat in the time that you have on that specific stage. I found that the rival system REALLY helps certain gamemodes, as when you're too far from a racer ahead of you, it can feel hard to catch up without someone to slipstream on, which having a racer who spawns more or less on you helps to mitigate. Additionally, the Rival makes it such that there's always at least ONE person to race at any point in time, helping to keep instances where you're smoking the competition engaging, and not punishing you for winning.

My other favorite part of the rival system is the rivals themselves. There are a total of 16 rivals in the game, all of whom are references to 80s or 90s anime, gaming, comics, movies, or other pop culture. Each of them are rendered excellently, their bits are concise and easy to read, and each of them demonstrates a major love for the source material they originate from, such that it's impossible not to be endeared by the rivals in some way.
My final point on the game is it's soundtrack, which can be best described as "exactly what you expected from this game, in the best possible way." It's this synth-y, cheesy rock soundtrack that would sound at home in Out Run, and it absolutely makes the game in my opinion.
Normally, this is the part of the review where I start talking about my nitpicks or criticisms with the game, but I am so serious, I've been thinking about what I could potentially have a problem with, and I don't think I can really conceive of anything that I have an issue with in this game. Slipstreram provides an incredible mix of substance and style, with a swath of interesting and varied content to match.
Slipstream is about $10 on Steam, and I COULD NOT recommend it more to ANYONE who's feeling an arcade racer shaped hole in their heart.

curiouscat has been weird lately so i am going to take this opportunity to archive some more SLARPG-related Q&A stuff in case it goes down again. here's a big dump of questions covering a wide range of topics from throughout 2021:
How much Sonic influence would you say SLARPG has?
there's definitely sonic influence, but it's less specific references or even an intentional desire to make something Like Sonic and more just... sonic was the first game series i really got into as a kid. there's probably gonna be some level of sonic influence in everything i make because those games and the archie comics were formative media for me
i started drawing furries because of sonic. melody is a fox because my first fursona started out as a sprite edit of sonic advance tails, and working off of those sprites (as well as mega man 7 ones because i read bob and george) influenced my pixel art style. the wasteland is on a floating island because angel island made me think floating islands were cool - although it's not intended to just be a reference to that, since obviously sonic isn't the only thing with sky islands. i didn't intentionally set out to make a game about colorful anthro characters going on adventures in a world that blends fantasy, sci-fi, and modern earth elements because i wanted it to be Like Sonic, but i probably like that kind of thing in part because of sonic
beyond that kind of thing there's very little in terms of intentional nods to sonic, but i will say that there is one (1) easter egg referencing idw sonic. but you'll have to play the game to find out what it is!!!!!

Do you think any members of the zany cast of SLARPG would make good parents/parental role models? Why or why not.
i mean there are multiple characters on the cast who are literal parents. beyond that, jodie and faith would make good parents for sure. and beverly. probably holly too. they've all got that nurturing nature in their own ways while also having their shit more or less figured out
i am normally not invested in shipping but that tiger and unicorn need to kiss more often
i regret not actually having any scenes where jodie and faith interact in the demo but you will be pleased with the full game
is it possible for the different sapient (are they different races or outright different species?) in Reverie to interbreed? Would an Elf/Beastfolk mix have the potential to basically be a kemonomimi?
we don't currently have any hybrid characters in the game, but it's definitely possible. a lot of traditional fantasy creatures would probably just be part beast folk and part elf/whatever on reverie. centaurs, fauns, that sort of thing. and yes, kemonomimi are probably a possibility
(note: this was answered in june, we now have a couple characters that could be considered species hybrids in there)
if you could add one thing to the game, regardless of potential cost or dev time, what would it be?
i've heavily considered adding alternate costumes, but i just don't think it's feasible. given unlimited resources i'd love to go for that. rpg maker's sprite sheet requirements mean that all of the sprites for the party members (their normal walking poses, specific actions, bespoke poses for story scenes, lighting variants, etc.) are split across a bunch of different sheets, and it'd just be a total pain to have to juggle costume variants on top of that. especially when you get into combined sprites for stuff like two characters hugging, which would then need alternate versions for every possible combination of costumes
on future projects, though, when i'm not working under rpg maker's restrictions, i'd love to do alternate costumes
i mean i'd also love for the game to have a full blown anime-ass opening so that it could truly become the shounen anime for sapphic furries that it exists as in my heart, but the costumes are a thing i've thought about a lot
you mentioned implementng ff6s relic system, are you gonna add any kind of deliberately overpowered BS?
i'm trying to keep the charms fairly balanced so that they all feel useful in their own way, but there's an optional one in the late game that you can only find one of that has the potential to be a little broken. if it suits the build style you're going for, anyway
Would Claire eat a hamburger, with no one in Greenridge (or anywhere with a beastfolk heavy population) thinking it's weird?
there is a very clear delineation drawn between beast folk and regular animals on reverie, so in-universe i don't think these sort of things bother anyone. melody is not a literal fox, she is a beast person who looks like a fox, and so on and so forth
but i just kind of avoid touching on that kind of thing because people can get fixated on it. most of the food items in the game are sweets and drinks or vague things like "picnic sets" lol. if i depict any meat it'll probably just be fish or something made up just so people aren't weird about it

claire would definitely try to run a speedrun of her own video game just to prove she can and to hold a world record for a day or two before its beaten

claire started to figure it out around 16 or so, but it took her a bit longer to come out. the details will come up in the game
As the creator of SLARPG, do you or anyone you know well enough that have already had opinions formed of all the characters, have any headcanons you kept yourself from fully implementing, or scrapped before finalizations? Or maybe just stuff you would never implement but would keep in your head because it didn't for the narrative or was too spicy?
i think it's natural to have lots of little ideas about your own characters that you can't quite fit into the actual story, yeah. although i'm not sure how much of that i'd wanna share here. given the writing style of slarpg a lot of my fun little character ideas make it into the game as optional dialogue and sidequest content and that sort of thing
like i've been asked if the party plays any video games, and if so what, and now allison's got a fightstick in her house for a little extra flavor. or i decided faith would probably read schlocky romance novels in her spare time, and so you can inspect her bookshelf in her office and there's dialogue about finding one of those
Are there dwarves in SLARPG? Are they the type of dwarf where even the cis women have full blown beards?
i won't rule out the possibility that they exist somewhere on reverie, but there aren't currently any in the game. but because of this i can't comment on what they'd be like
Will you release an image of the world map you made (even it if turned out to be a work in progress when you scrapped it) after the game comes out?
i mean the thing is that the overworld was cut so early that it only ever had proper locations for melody's house and greenridge. the rest is just a vague archipelago where i figured i'd stick the other locations later. (and it's not a huge game, so it's not like there'd be that many locations to visit on the overworld - which is the main reason why it got cut)
right now what's left of the scrapped overworld just looks like this

Is there any antagonists happen in SLARPG? I wanna see the boss fights in the game
the game does have villains, and quite a bit of the story revolves around them. to say there's a lot we haven't shown would be an understatement. we're keeping them under wraps for now because i think it'll be more fun for players to discover that side of the game for themselves. you'll see what i mean

What's the Watsonian reason why beastfolk are part animals? Do they share a close common ancestor to Orcs/Elves/other sapient races? Are they technically primates?
the origins of beast folk and the other sapient species on reverie are kind of foggy in-fiction because of all the business with magic and gods and whatnot. it's unclear what's due to natural evolution and what's the gods being like "hey wouldn't it be cool if our planet had cat people?" all beast folk are technically members of the same mammalian race, though, even the ones that look like birds and reptiles and whatnot. and yes, they're presumably closely related with all the other sapient species
Would Paula and the Fortune Teller get along? I'm envisioning Paula overhearing Allison saying that the guy was a jerk and thinking "well if Goleta doesn't like him there's a chance he ain't that bad"
i had to ask anthony and he says: "I think it'd be one of those things where, no matter when or where you ask him, he'd be like, 'Which one is that?' or 'Who?' and then the person would explain and he'd be like, 'Oh, erm right right, she's good. I like her a lot, she's a great friend.'"
personally i think they would get along but they aren't really Friends. acquaintances though, sure. but also paula would definitely be too scared to get a reading from him
we know about the other 2 but what breed of dog is Holly?
holly is a sheepdog, but anthony only decided on this long after designing her so she doesn't really look like a sheepdog

v3′s art is comically terrible for a professionally distributed game in a series: a compilation
in this not-essay I will list all of the mistakes and problems I have spotted in v3′s art. don’t worry, it’s entirely for fun and I’m doing this on a whim, so please feel free to not take this seriously but also it’s hilarious and embarrassing how ridiculous this is like what happened did they speedrun the whole production or what
see, there are some things you can take as meta like “they made it bad on purpose to allude to the downfall of tv shows that have been on air for much too long” but I have a very strong feeling this is not the case due to the nature of some of these errors
disclaimer, the more I study this art, the more I fear that the artists were underpaid and underslept, so if this is in fact the case, I am so sorry to all of them but also I’m going to make fun of the art anyway
anyway let’s get started!

if you study this image for longer than 5 seconds, you will see that kaede is the only one fully shaded and keebo is literally just his normal sprite pasted into the image. every other character is just an ordinary ref, hence most of them facing the exact same direction with neutral expressions on their faces. it looks like a bad edit, and is probably one of the worst pieces of art in the game. it kind of gets better from here on, but my roasting will not.
with that out of the way, here’s the problem that officially bothers me the most and clarifies my viewpoint of “this is not meta and an actual lack of company communication”

this freaking cg, which seems normal at a glance, but some wiseass was like “oh, kaede is a girl, so obviously she’s going to be shorter than the Male Protagonist™” ah, that’s funny. because if you look at the character bios, kaede is, in fact, one inch taller than shuichi and not like 6 inches shorter as she is shown here.
also shuichi’s shoulder is disproportionate and horrendous and he looks vaguely like a jojo character, but I wasn’t even thinking about that until right now.

thanks guys, 50% of the fandom who has never bothered to check these bios thinks that kaede is like 5′3 (did the developers really put so little thought into her to the point where drawing her correctly in the game didn’t even matter??)
also I would like to point out that, even though this isn’t related to the art itself, yes, a character kaede’s size being only 117 lbs is unfeasible, but this applies to literally every character in danganronpa ever and it’s not new news that it’s unrealistic
update: someone in the tags informed me that in versions of the game that use centimeters, like the japanese version, kaede is actually shorter than shuichi, which just adds another thing to the list of weird decisions the localization team made for no reason. that said, after confirming this, kaede is 167 cm in the original, while shuichi is 171 cm, which are approximately 5′6 and 5′7 respectively, but one inch is still nowhere near as drastic as it is depicted above. (in spite of this, I would rather depict kaede as slightly taller, so I’m probably going to keep doing that.)

I have to mention it, guys. this has to be one of the worst danganronpa cgs. kokichi’s facial proportions look atrocious. look at the way his face sticks out like his jaw is in the wrong place. his scarf is a pasted texture. that’s it. this moment was so iconic but the cg just looks so… so… off. like something is terribly wrong, but you can’t put your finger on it.
you know what? let’s get into that ‘pasted texture’ thing.

let’s imagine you’re an artist working on a professional game. you’re assigned to draw cgs of kokichi ouma, who has a checkered scarf from hell. sure, it will be terrible to draw, but you only have to draw it once at a time! plus, perspective is pretty important, right? can you be bothered? nah, actually. let’s just copy paste a checkered pattern into the cg, because I’m sure nobody will notice. it’ll blend right in with the other cgs that someone actually put effort into drawing his scarf in, right?

no. the answer is no and I very much noticed. this genuinely looks terrible and I would understand taking a shortcut like that in fanart or even an indie game but this is a full price pc and console distributed game

real talk, maybe you could argue that he’s missing muscle because he’s deathly sick, but most of his cgs don’t line up with this, and his arms just look disproportionate to his torso size (granted this is a consistent problem across all danganronpa games and a lot of characters have this weird problem, like hajime, but also kaito is bigger than hajime so I kind of have higher expectations of him) maybe it’s his stupid goatee and the way he reminds me of yasuhiro?? it creates this illusion that he’s older than he is and so I keep expecting him to look more like an adult
oh, also rantaro is missing some of his accessories in that video he made–you know the one–but I don’t wanna go back and screenshot it
also you may have noticed that I’m skipping all of the monokub cgs because I literally do not care about them and I’m not even bothering to check and see if they have artistic mistakes in them

so, that done, the sprites are also pretty terrible at times. they’re not as interesting to go through, however, and downloading the full sprite sets for every character and studying every single one of them will drive me insane, so I’ll just sum some of the ones I noticed up. I made things for kaede and shuichi before deciding I wasn’t going to get into it, so here are these.

that said, other mistakes include kokichi missing his purple highlights in all of the sprites encompassing a specific pose, stray pixels all over the place on everyone, and everyone also has heavily inconsistent shading, but literally all I think about is how pregame shuichi is unshaded and two of kaede’s pregame sprites have glaring outfit change mistakes in them
anyway, thank you for taking the time to read my ridiculous ramble. in all seriousness, there’s this looming presence of some lack of communication in the development team, like with all the art and design inconsistencies, pieces and sprites that look rushed, stray pixels, and missing basic proportional stuff. these are the kinds of things that you supposedly have to pretty much have in the bag in order to get jobs in professional businesses, so it’s really weird to me that this game suffers from so many of these problems. it’s like they tried to make the art so much more crisp than the other games, but it fell on its face as they realized it was going to take longer to draw everything and they started to rush. it’s weird, because the coloring itself looks normal–it’s just sloppily drawn, and the proportions are a mess once put into the context of perspective. many of the cgs look like they were drawn by different people, and I’m still not over the fact that half of kokichi’s cgs have his scarf pasted in as a texture.
the moral of the story is that if you’re selling a game at full price that also happens to be in a series that has had 3 very good games in it already the stakes should probably be higher than this. v3 has been out for more than 3 years and it’s still $40 (did it cost more than that before? I sure hope not), and the overarching quality of the game is just not as high as the other games. I’m not saying that the other games don’t have any problems with their art at all, they’re just not as glaringly obvious and every artistic choice in those games feels intentional.
regardless, I had a blast roasting the art at 2am, so maybe you got a kick out of all this chaos.

They sould only sputter as wild theories became reality before the small grey screen, the only point of interest being their avatar for the game.
He was sentient. They all were.
No wonder the story would completely derail off the few times they used a walkthrough, how all the start of chapter cutscenes seemed to be so censored. No wonder there were more chapters than what they were told in game - they were told there was 5 maximum per game, not 10. No wonder character dialogue would be so... off, out of character almost, eerie and almost directed towards them.
...rationality decided to pop its head back into their mind, bordering a state of panic from confusion, commenting that maybe they were just seeing things.
It was late at night after all. Trial 10 was taking its sweet time with the pre trial segment with miles and maya seeming to always vy for phoenix's(...? They couldn't decide. Was it for him or them?) Attention.
...right, they'd get through this and save.
It was just another part of the game. The supernatural didnt exist - otherwise it'd just be natural.
"Alright... talk... there's no dialogue options though." They glanced down to where the bottom screen emulator would be.
"Oh no, just use your mic, S/O."
The abrupt text change made them jump. The supposedly "unique" sprite to phoenix's avatar in their game portrayed a gentle look to the side (coincedentlsly staring directly at heir Point of view)
...were they being hacked?
Through an emulator of all things? Using phoenix wright: ace attorney sprites?
No, no...
"You Look worried. Are you alright?"
The air went cold as S/O's hand retreated back from theur pondering, a slow burning whithin not pleasant with the icy air felt as if their emotions were a fever "...You can see through my camera?"
"Of course. Your dressing gown really suits you."
They scrambled to the drawer in their desk with tape in it and tore a piece of paper, quickly sticking it over their laptop's camera.
"What do you want?!" They nearly screamed, but it was hoarse, a whisper.
"Whoa, hey, its alright. I'm no hacker! I wouldn't ever do anything like what you're thinking!"
The sprite took on the iconic shocked expression, as if he had any justification to feel that way.
"Then..." their throat was burning. "What are you, if not a hacker?" Because what or who else could do this? It didn't make sense.
Again, eliminate the impossible whatever remains is only the truth, the very last "normal" case in their playthrough had said.
"Oh, S/O..."
He was looking again. It felt like a reassurance initially when it first came up in 1-3, like things were only going to get better from there, but that sprite seemed to have the opposite effect on that late night.
"You've played enough of the game. You should know."
"The theories in my head are more than impossible right now. You- You're not real. You're just a character."
"Ouch... what about edgeworth and maya?"
"Also characters! What the fuck, just-just explain this already!" They leaned into the computer, slamming their palms down as they took of the paper guard. phoenix -or whatever (...whoever?) That was, shook his head.
"Well, since you've done that... i might aswell state the obvious."
S/O leaned back with a hitched breath and frozen fingertips, awaiting anything but the truth.
"We're all living beings beyond your screen, S/O. Not hackers, nor ghosts. We're alive. And theres a whole world in here."
He was smiling again. S/O was not. Frozen in place, any heat drained from their body led them only to feel the radiation off their laptop.
"I'll keep in touch, hell if I don't-I won't, S/O. I won't."
S/O stayed silent, just taking it all in.
"And hey, maybe one day we could even meet face to face - no more pixels..."
How would that be possible? Something felt wrong just begond the light as the side glancing smile seemed to grow more earnest, but even more so creepy.
"how would that sound? Again, I'll keep in touch. Talk to you later. It's late after all. You really ought to take care of yourself..."
"but I don't mind. I can do it for you if need be."
(Whoops i didnt mean to write this much but uh... heck. I guess i have brainrot. Sorry mod miles /lh i took some of the ideas this au has slowly gathered and just slammed it together.)
