More Transmasc Mike headcanons (he never leaves my brain)

-I like how the Spider-Man AUs brought up the concept of Mike’s middle name being James. I’ve adopted that as my headcanon in general. Furthering the idea by saying that Mike’s deadname had the initials MJW and that he picked Michael James so he could keep them.

-He started going by MJ when he was 11. He told people it was based on the Spider-Man character, but it was really because he was starting to realize that things weren’t quite right and he wanted a more neutral name. He still goes by MJ sometimes once he’s older.

-Mike and Will went to Snowball together. Will had a HUGE crush on Mike at that point (and was painfully aware of it). Mike knew he felt different with Will than their friends, but was caught in that feeling of “I don’t like him how a girl likes a boy” and decided that it must mean he didn’t like him at all. (Did not start to consider liking him how a boy likes another boy until they were 14 and Will had already moved away.)

-He dated El over the summer between eighth grade and high school. It was partly an act of rebellion, dating a girl right under his parents’ noses when they wanted him to find a nice boy like Nancy had, but it was also an attempt to feel more like Dustin and Lucas.

-He hit his hardcore gender crisis when he met Eddie Munson, because who wouldn’t have a gender crisis after meeting Eddie Munson?

-(This can be transmasc Eddie if you want too)

-He was still “dating” El when he went to visit over spring break, but he hadn’t really talked to her or Will since they’d left. He didn’t send her any letters, so there wasn’t a “Love, Mike” argument. Their relationship just sort of fizzled out instead, because neither of them actually had any real feelings for the other.

-He came out to Will during the season 4 Road Trip

-(Him coming out was also what made Will realize he was gay, because the only girl he’d ever been remotely interested in was Mike and then- oh, Mike wasn’t even a girl.)

-He started going by Mike during the post season 4 apocalypse. Obviously everybody was a little too preoccupied to be judgy, and most people were just happy he’d finally figured his shit out.

I think the second most beautiful thing about Furiosa and Jack (the first, of course, being the "My Jack", "My Fury" scene that still hits me like a throat punch) is that they didn't try to shoehorn in a typical romance. They didn't try to force today's version of what a relationship looks like onto these two because it would have never worked.

They took Furiosa, a girl who lost everything so early, that had only been the object of powerful men, who was forced over and over and over again to relearn everything she knew at the behest of monsters dressed as leaders, and gave her the Praetorian Jack, a man in a position of power that never took anything from her at all.

Dementus took her mother, took her home, and took her voice from her under the guise of affection. She was not a person, but an appendage forcefully attached to him.

Immortan Joe, for as kindly (very loose definition of kindly) as he treated his wives, saw her as nothing more than a womb, an object that he could use to birth a boy to continue his iron rule over the Citadel. He took her personhood, her childhood, just as surely as Dementus did. They both kept her in a gilded cage that she had no hope of escaping.

Then, she became a boy, and she was still only an appendage in the great war machine of Joe. She worked with the War Boys and the Black Thumbs as a replaceable piece of his engine that would someday lose its function or die.

And when she finally, finally, gets a chance to escape, to try (and most likely fail) to go back to a home that she can't even be sure exists anymore, she loses that, too. Except, this time, the man who comes back for her doesn't offer her a cage but a key. He sees in her a picture of himself, someone who has learned to be savage by force and not by choice.

He gives her a place to learn to be a person again, gives her the tools and resources to survive, gives her the limited autonomy that his position of power brings, and eventually even gives her his own past without taking anything from her at all. He gives her all of this and then was completely willing to let her go, never presuming that he would be allowed to go with her, only wanting to help her get wherever that was. And when she chooses him, chooses to trust him with the peach pit, he looks absolutely gutted, like he never thought in his wildest dreams that she would.

Their relationship is ambiguous when you look at them through the lens of modern relationships, but it is so beautiful in the context of the world that they find themselves forced into because it is a relationship that they chose. It doesn't matter if they never kissed, or never said "I love you", because it was never about that. It was about choosing each other over and over again, trusting each other with their squishiest places, and knowing for a fact that they would never hurt each other.

Praetorian Jack was a mentor, a peer, and the only person that Furiosa had ever been allowed to choose and he chose her right back.

I'm playing through Dragon Age 2 again and I just can't get over how... idk how to say it exactly, but the way you feel, in every moment of this game, how much Varric loves Hawke. It feels entwined with everything, it breathes through every part of the narrative, it blooms diegetigally through the integration of story and gameplay, makes you a co-conspirator in that love in a way maybe only a video game could.

It's in the way I don't think this story is a defense of Hawke only -- or even primarily -- directed at Cassandra, but at Hawke themselves. Beneath everything else going on there's the quiet, utterly unshakable refutation of Hawke's worst fears: Did you think you mattered, Hawke? Did you think anything you ever did mattered? . . . You're a failure, and your family died knowing it. Rising through the story as Varric tells it there's a fiercely tender voice saying: Yes, you did matter. In tragedy or in triumph, for better or for worse, in love or in hate, you always mattered. The ultimate tragedy of Hawke is always right there in the open before the story even starts letting you in on telling it; they couldn't fix anything. They couldn't stop the downward spiral Kirkwall was set on -- the real truth is that no one person ever could. And yet the point of DA2 is that it matters that they tried, and it matters that there were people who loved and were loved along the way, however badly it all failed in the end. Hawke is the Bioware protagonist who succeeds the least, and they're the character who matters the most, to me. (This is also why the Absolution reveal did not shake me in the least haha, my love for Hawke has nothing at all to do with whether they succeeded or failed at anything.)

What Varric is saying, in the only way he seems to be able to say the really real things -- through stories -- is so simple and so fundamental. You were here, and I loved you. There's the emotional heart of it, at the end of it all, that love and grief and recognition. It's so dizzyingly intimate. There's so much distancing, layers upon layers of obfuscation, to be able to say it. It drives me insane!!!! It makes me feel the same way that 'Poem' by Langston Hughes does:

I loved my friend.  He went away from me.  There's nothing more to say.  The poem ends,  Soft as it began,— I loved my friend. 

He loved his friend. They went away from him. What more is there to say. (Many, many, many things, when you're a compulsive liar and storyteller, but hey sometimes you have to deploy a whole armada of lies to tell one simple truth, I understand, I'm a writer too lol)
