A very lovely meta about Ray made it to my dashboard and even though this meta was aligned with my interpretation of Ray it still hurts to read.
I think there’s something about Ray that I’ve realized for a bit but I think after watching My Stand In and the character Ming, I have a better idea of the character Ray was supposed to be and…Khaotung just never took the bait.
He was supposed to be rich, selfish and toxic and he is but the story gave him an alcoholic mother who likely committed suicide (more or less in front of his eyes) and Khaotung grounded every moment of that character in that pain, in that desperate need for connection.
He put more in Ray than anyone had ever expected him to (Jojo’s own comment), and I am going to go so far as to say that he put into Ray beyond what the story had the capacity for. There’s a reason why his story takes a sharp nosedive after episode 7 when his role as the gun cocked to shoot and destroy Mew and Top’s domestic bliss was done.
The story didn’t care about Ray’s pain, didn’t want to look at it beyond what it could do to make Mew and Boston’s beef more exciting and as a indicator of Mew’s moral superiority over Boston aka Ray sides with Mew at the end. Ray and Sand were the only characters not based on real life people, they were conceived to be padding for the main story.
And Khaotung looked at these restrictions and just went Nah Bro. And he’s going to do it again as Bianca/Bison. I can’t help but feel that Jojo is now intentionally using Khaotung’s unparalleled ability to fully inhabit any role he’s given to elevate his show. Maybe he watched tonhon chonlatee and realized Ray wasn’t the first time Khaotung has done something like that. Why else would you give the auxiliary pair to your stronger actor duo?
Maybe I’m wrong about heartkillers but Bison looking like a happier more murderous version of Ray isn’t inspiring too much confidence. Kant looking like Sand with a firmer backbone is inspiring even less confidence. Khaotung’s entire career trajectory cannot just be breathing more life and depth into stories that didn’t have any. Someone get my man a script and director who can help him shine.

something i see a lot in books is like. capitalizing a word where it really doesn’t need to be? like for an example in Who Censored Roger Rabbit they spell toons as Toons. and i understand it’s probably supposed to make it clear that this is a deliberate Word For Something That The Author Kinda Made Up but like. to me it stands out too much. humans are just humans. a cat would still be a cat and a dog a dog. but toons are Toons. idk i think it just feels unnatural and unnecessary. if toons are natural to the world here why do you need to capitalize the T

why do you hate Joshua Graham or Honest Hearts so much?
This DLC and character represents a bigger issue with fandom spaces I have but particularly fallout fandom in general.
Fallout tends to tackle a lot of topics controversial and not. The first two games it’s heavy cause they are the most satirical and direct with how anti-war, nationalism and etc… they are. 3 loses this as it’s very clear once you play or learn about all the games that Todd and a bunch of guys at Bethesda just liked the 50s post apocalyptic aesthetic and refuse to actually critique the ideals of the time period like the earlier titles.
New Vegas is the game that really gets back into it a degree it almost seems like it’s taking too much on. There are things done exceedingly well while other things are done horribly wrong . I’ve made posts about it before and plan to make a big series of posts (it’s a lot of writing) but my biggest gripe is with Honest Hearts and all the gross and white savior esque depictions it has of indigenous peoples. The entirety if FNV does not do the injustices faced by indigenous people correctly on any count. My two biggest complaints are with the Khans and the tribes in Zion but I’ll talk about the former on a different post.
Both characters of Daniel and Joshua are the most accurate depiction of white saviors I’ve seen and I hate how the DLC tries to justify and defend them. The DLC treats Joshua like this man who has repented for his past actions when he is just retracing his steps after his cruelty bit him in the ass. He was one of the worst parts of the Legion and it is all but explicitly stated that if you don’t force him to be non-violent he will turn the tribes of Zion into the legion 2.0. The Dead Horses and the Sorrows are horribly infantilized by both Daniel and Joshua who both use them for self serving purposes guised by religious duty. The White Legs are the horrible stereotype of violent and savage indigenous and I personally think a lot of their interlinking with Ulysses, his hair and Ulysses character in general are distasteful and very telling of how BIPOC or POC where involved.
But outside of the game it’s the weird obsession people have with these characters ideologies and trying to make them seem more interesting/philosophical than they are. Tumblr is an echo chamber and many fans of Fallout are not the people on this site. Many people are not educated in the issues these characters convey and how poorly they do or used these characters as a poor introduction for their takes. Contrary to what a lot of people believe in, fallout has a prediomeny white cis male fanbase. More importantly a large portion of the fanbase is white.
You can joke how FNV made you trans or see the numbers on post/fics or diverse headcanons but these are kiddy numbers compared to the millions that consume the franchise and aren’t in those more aware spaces or don’t engage in the spaces the same way someone like me does/has to. Their views shape a lot more than people realize and it’s exhausting to be in a space where people don’t correct the more subtle yet toxic aspects of it but also adopt them into some weird quirky view point on the characters or issues. Some people don’t realize and some people don’t care.
My main issue is just the idolizing of these sort of thing in this fandom space and people try to acts like a game like fallout whose tagline is “War never changes” and has never had a game not revolve around political or militaristic factions issues isn’t that deep or doesn’t relate to real issues. I think it’s mainly caused by how over powered you can become and how you can strong arm your way past these learning moments as majority of people who play this game do play it as a power fantasy where they can do so as they please (which of course, go ahead it’s fun) but never take in parallels or lessons in the story as if it was just another first person shooter.
Also like another personal gripe is Cazadores spawn like hell whenever I’m there and I have not found a mod that works to mod them out so I have to play Indigenous Racism the DLC while getting jumped by giant wasps WHILE helping Mormons. Like I cannot catch a break.

I forget about the weird time paradox in TFRB that they never had time to flesh out (or didn’t intend to). You know, the thing with Jules Verne, who’s from the 19th century, knowing Heatwave as a Cybertronian and not as a robot. (He knows of Heatwave primarily, but Cybertronians overall.)
Honestly, it takes me back to my big hypothesis/AU(?) on Prime titles being passed down from the Covenant Thirteen to Optimus’ generation, then passed down to the next generation like Heatwave and Smokescreen, etc. So, what? Does this mean Heatwave, meeting Verne, is enough of a legend to be the primary representative of Cybertronians meeting humans? Does this make him a Prime or mean that he is? Is Heatimus Prime (working title) canon?

yet another reprise of the same post i’ve made dozens and dozens of times before but GEEZ! i am so incredibly lucky to be doing what i’m doing! to think i spend hours and hours and days and weeks and months and years and hopefully DECADES pouring over animation history, lauding the masters and studying their work so intently and absorbing it and feeling and identifying with it, and the fact that i get to walk the same turf they did. that i get to be a part of this business that they established. that i get to carry the torch and that, some day, no matter how small or insignificant, my own work and contributions will be regarded as “animation history” because i work in animation and all history is history. i just can’t believe that i’m privileged enough to indulge in some of the same practices that The Greats did, that i get to study their work and, if i’m so lucky, channel and make homages to it where possible.
this isn’t to say “i’m just like Tex Avery because i work in animation TOO!!!!”, but, rather, an expression of my sheer GRATITUDE and amazement that i get to do what i do at all. i’ve met so many nice people. blossomed so much as an artist and cartoonist. get inspired each day by the talent i am constantly surrounded by. and to think that i get to be a part of it!!!!! that i get to carry the torch! i know this sounds so conceited and pompous and i really don’t mean it that way at all because i don’t WANT to be known as someone who people are only interested in because i work in cartoons. i just wanna be known for me! what “me” is i guess is for you to decide! but, regardless, i’m just feeling extra thankful tonight that i’m able to indulge in my passions and SPREAD my passions and have said passions fostered. that i’m lucky enough to tread the same ground as some of the greatest creatives that gave me this ground to tread on. there will never be enough words to properly articulate just how deeply and passionately my gratitude extends.
