okay I have a bit of a theory that was inspired by your Yuna Aerith parallel gifset, while I immediately thought of Yuna during that scene as well, I didn't really think about it beyond it being a reference until seeing your gifset again just now. A lot of people think there are parallels between ff7/ffx already and that maybe the games are connected in some loose way. And thinking about Yuna's story... how the game revolves around her intending to make this big sacrifice in order to save everyone until we find another way and are able to put an end to things for good without her needing to die (a better ending than her sacrificing herself and restarting the cycle). Not to mention other parallels between her and Aerith in general. And a lot of people are unsure if the ending of og FF7 is actually a "good" ending. And I am now wondering if Aerith's lifestream dance scene was more than just a fun reference and it was actually more of an intentional nod to her and Yuna's similar stories and maybe a hint to the fact that she doesn't need to die for us to win in the end (ofc Aerith already meeting her fate in rebirth has happened, but with the other worlds etc we know things can potentially be altered somehow in game 3 and that we may have saved a version of Aerith already). Perhaps this time we can get an even better outcome. Defying fate/destiny is very relevant to Yuna's story and is a heavy theme in this re-trilogy which I would like to see have a purpose beyond faking us out. I feel the direct comparison between her and Aerith does potentially feel more intentional along that line of thinking
apologies that got quite lengthy and disjointed but hopefully made some sense hah
That's a really good catch! I think as well it's interesting to note that as well as Yuna not having to sacrifice herself, they also brought back Tidus at the end FFX-2 - albeit only in the hidden ending that you have to 100% complete the game to get. So clearly SE aren't against bringing back characters that appear to be gone for good.
I definitely think that Aerith is going to live at the end of Part 3 - the lifestream dance is obviously a nod to Yuna, but in terms of FF7's narrative I think it was also deliberately meant to show is that Aerith can and is learning to control the lifestream while she's alive, so she doesn't need to die to be able to manipulate the lifestream to help defeat Meteor.
I'm absolutely convinced we'll get a payoff to the idea of defying fate, just because otherwise it would be really bad writing. They very carefully set it up in Remake with Aerith and Nanaki having full knowledge of the future, and Cloud having fractured visions of it and have then built on it further in Remake; both through Marlene having gained that knowledge from Aerith, and using the interludes with Zack to establish a) that characters we expected to die could survive and b) the rainbow motif to show when fate's been changed, a motif that then appears when Cloud blocks Sephiroth's sword and in both scenes when he's holding Aerith and she wakes up. To suddenly undo that in Part 3 and return to the status quo of the OG would be a complete narrative letdown and anti-climax after everything they've teased, and I think the devs are better than that.
The OG ending is a complicated one and was always intended to be bittersweet, but it's telling that in an interview in the Rebirth Ultimania, Kitase said that he hopes all the characters find happiness at the end of Retrilogy, implying that he doesn't consider that they did at the end of the OG. And if you want everyone to have a happy ending . . . well, the characters that had the most obviously unhappy ending of all of them were Aerith, who died, and Cloud, who was broken by her death.
Not to mention that Nomura said in the same interview that Kitase asked for "a very major something" that wasn't in the OG for Part 3, and I really don't see what else that would be except a ending in which Aerith, and possibly Zack, both get to live and Cloud and Aerith are reunited.

Asks for a Fic Writer!
Tagged by @eemamminy-art and @nateharmonica thank you!!
--
1. how many works do you have on AO3? 138! Which is weird cos it feels like only 2 minutes ago I was excited about hitting 100 lol
2. what's your total AO3 word count? 401,149 total
3. what fandoms do you write for? My top 5 written for fandoms are FFXIV (27), Resident Evil (26), FFXII (15), inFamous (13) and FFXV (13)! But I have a load of others as well - atm it's Baldur's Gate 3, alternated with my perennial beloved FFXII
4. what are your top five fics by kudos? Point of No Return - Resident Evil, Chris/Wesker, time travel fix-it fic Aphrodisiac - Overwatch, Reaper/Soldier 76, collaring and gloves kink Like a Drug - Resident Evil, Chris/Wesker, STARS era drug bust Filters - FFXV, Prompto/Ignis, 5 things fic about Prompto's photo taking Between Death and Ascension - Magnus Archives, Jon/Gerry, post season 3 fix it that got immediately jossed upon s4 releasing lol. Honestly I'm amazed this one is here, considering Jon/Gerry is a bit of a rarepair. Or at least, it was back then!! I have no idea of the current state of TMA fandom (and don't wanna know, ugh lmao)
5. do you respond to comments? Always as a rule, but usually quite a long time after I get them lksgfg
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Has to be From the Flames of the Fire, I Feel You, part 4 of my Sartauvoir/Basch series, because it's the fic where Basch dies at the end, and it finishes off with a notice from Noah about the death and funeral arrangements. I cried on my lunch break at work writing this fucker lmao
8. do you get hate on fics? I've not had anything since my ffn days, where I got a very mean comment about OOC. I mean, it was true, but MAN.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind? It's very rare that I don't write smut! I think the yuletide fic I wrote was the first time in years lol. Either way, I like to write kinky porn with feelings and character study shit
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written? Not any more, but the craziest crossover with the most specific-ass audience was a British Comedy RPF crossed with FFX, where David Mitchell is a summoner and Charlie Brooker and Robert Webb are his guardians. It's called Spira Infinita, and I never did end up finishing it lmao. Oops. Either way, I had a blast writing it and I still think it was fucking good, all 9 kudos of it!! God... this just made me remember I also wrote a brooker/mitchell crossover with mgs. I was on some shit back then I tell you what
11. have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I'm aware of! I'm not big enough for that, I think
12. have you ever had a fic translated? I thiiiink someone once asked me, but I forgot which fic it was tbh!
13. have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes!! I co-wrote one of my fave Ashe/Basch/Vossler fics with my friend when we got assigned each other for an ff_land exchange - Five Moments of Desire. It was really fun, we had a great time!
14. what's your all-time favourite ship? GOD this is hard!!! I think Nero/Credo tbh, I never get tired of thinking about them, even as sadly underrated as they are. Also Sartauvoir/Basch is highly up there, I've never been seized with such an insane streak of inspiration for a ship. They got me in their clutches and no mistake!!
15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I don't actually have much in the way of wips, but I do have 5k of a Sart/Basch AU where Sart channels his fenex summoning to bring Basch back to life, but it stalled a little due to a combo of scheduling for other things, other ships taking over my brain for a bit, and honestly the general lack of fandom for them? I have a few close friends I met because of the ship, but getting such low response to things is really demoralising and makes it hard to continue. I DO want to finish it for sure, but atm I am too gripped by other ships so idk if it'll happen.
16. what are your writing strengths? I think dialogue for sure, and characterisation.
17. what are your writing weaknesses? Fight scenes x_x Which is annoying, because I love them and have a lot of sparring/fighting related kinks!!! I persevere, but I hate every moment of writing them lol
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Uhh nothing I've ever done! I think it'd be fine if you're fluent in that language OR if you have a trusted friend who is, who can give you actual sense-making sentences, but otherwise, do not!
19. first fandom you wrote for? Baby's first fandom was handwritten Redwall/Discworld crossover in reporter's notebooks as a very young child, but my first fandom-fandom was ffvii, where I wrote a frankly terrible Reno/Vincent fic! And idek why cos I don't ship it at all? I think I just had a boner for both of them and wanted to get it out. It is still on ffn alas, but eugh.
20. favourite fic you've written? Honestly I think it's my SartBasch series, Body Politics. It caters directly to my own id, and I think it's really good! I actually planned it out as a cohesive series AND actually finished writing it! Proud of myself lol. And I just.... *clenches fist* love those old men.....
----- tagging people, if u wanna do this, then consider urself tagged!!

Ok before I forget about it completely now that I've moved on to other stuff for like a week already I should probably say something about Astria Ascending.
Astria Ascending is a trainwreck, but it's one that I spent literally a hundred hours on. The art style and music are generally pretty good (although some NPC designs are kinda iffy, but at least the artists were less horny on main than for XC2), and I thoroughly enjoyed the job system and combat. It's obviously heavily influenced by various older FF games in a lot of ways, especially 12, but mechanically I actually liked this more than most of them.
Coincidentally, and despite being made by a non-Japanese indie studio, they had a couple people who've worked on FF games contribute writing and music. The music was a good call, and that was one of the things that was consistently pretty good in the game. The writing was not a good call, and it was one of the things that was consistently not good in the game.
I know Tetsuya Nomura has worked on lots of good games, including ones that I've really liked, but I kind of have a long history of not getting along great with his writing. Like I had plenty of fun with FF7 and FF8, but I'm not going to pretend the stories weren't a complete mess, especially in 8. I liked the worlds and characters and stuff enough to get past that though. And even though I haven't played them myself, I kind of had the same reaction to the KH games he's worked on.
And then there's FFX, which I kind of hated. Like a lot. I only finished it out of spite and because my laptop was in for repairs that week. It started out with a bunch of interesting stuff, and I had tons of ideas of where it might be going with it, but every time they revealed something significant about the world or plot it was less interesting than everything I'd thought of. So I'd readjust my speculation based on the new information, and then a few hours later I'd be disappointed again. By the end it had just been disappointment after disappointment for a few dozen hours, and it remains one of my least favorite RPGs I've ever played, and definitely my least favorite I've actually finished.
Good news though! Astria Ascending's story and writing is a lot like FFX, only a lot worse. There are a decent number of interesting things about the world, but it just doesn't go anywhere with any of them ever and has the most bland and superficial possible story with no real depth. At least in other stuff he's worked on they generally at least have good characters or character interactions or character development that carries them, but that barely exists here. I would struggle to come up with five adjectives to describe most of the main cast without resorting to really generic stuff, and hardly anything happens to them and they barely change or grow.
I know I said good news, but that wasn't actually entirely sarcastic. It kinda lets you know up front that it's not particularly well written, so I never got my hopes up and was never really disappointed.
I feel like I've been almost entirely negative, but I really did have plenty of fun aside from that. They said they were inspired by FF12, especially the International Zodiac Job System version, and it shows. I genuinely liked the job system and some of the wacky combinations of things you can put together with it, and once I figured out how things work my party was constantly doing very silly things.
The side quests are sometimes poorly explained, and I eventually stopped wandering around finding where stuff was on my own and just looked it up online, but I was actually pleasantly surprised that it had some decent puzzles here and there in the dungeons/temples and mostly enjoyed going through those even if the map is a disaster. They've also basically fixed the game breaking bugs it had for the first few months it was out, so while it's still pretty unpolished and has some weird issues sometimes it's at least playable now without major issues.
Also it has one of the best card game minigames since Triple Triad, which I wasted a lot of time on. It's not quite as good as Triple Triad in the end because the random rule just makes it stop being fun 80% of the time instead of just being harder and taking more thinking, but at least the rules each NPC uses are fixed so you're not spreading around bad rules like in Triple Triad. I feel like they had potential to do a bit more with it than they did, but ultimately I had a lot more fun with it than something like Gwent.
So yeah, I can't really say it's a good game, but it's a game that has good things in it while also being a total mess, and I mostly enjoyed my time with it. Also the battle music is going to live in my brain for the next several years.
(edit while updating tags years later: I have no idea why I went on a tangent about Nomura when the writing in this is Nojima's fault. Sometimes my brain doesn't work, but I suppose they did do most of those FF games together so most of my issues still stand I guess)

WOLSDAY QUESTIONS
Questions from @mythopoet-of-amaurot here
Tell me about what inspirations and influences went into the creation and development of your WoL/OC. Did you have a vision for them in mind when you created them? Or did it take time and experience to figure out who they were? Feel free to go into detail!
I did not think much about my WoL on creation. In fact, I didn't even think I would get this invested in FFXIV as I had tried to play the game beforehand and dropped it quickly. But here we are today, hehe.
My WoL was formerly more of a self-insert and went by a different name, my cosplay alias, Sorayomi. But then I began thinking about her past and where she came from. Who is she outside of her WoL title. When I got to the end of the Dragonsong War and the beginning of Stormblood, that's when the wheels started spinning and I was slowly separating myself from the character.
However, it was until after I completed Shadowbringers when I sat and just started writing out my character lore. I kept using the name "Sorayomi" and it just felt... wrong. So my WoL took on a slightly different identity and I changed their name to Wisteria--- a flower and word I was already associating with my WoL because of their hair color and a work-in-progress short story on why they chose that for their name (she is an orphan and had no known name).
There is still some parts of me in Wisteria and our namedays are still the same. But the fictional characters that I drew inspirations from to create who Wisteria is today are Zelda (TLoZ), Yuna (FFX), Sophie (Ghibli), and Danielle (Ever After)--- all who are some of my favorite fictional characters of all time.

I Do...I Guess? (Chapter 3)
Djose Temple
Ao3 | FF.net
In my mind, Zanarkand is just like...Los Angeles, or New York. Just a big city with modern day technology...with slightly questionable fashion statements?
And OMG I’m so happy to get reviews! I knew writing for FFX was like shouting into a void, but I got responses! And they were good! So I guess I’ll keep going??
In the morning, the team braved the Djose Highroad to the temple. Along the way they came across a smattering of survivors. They had endeavored to reach the temple but had succumbed to exhaustion from fiends.
Thankfully, they had yet to find any casualties.
Djose Temple was a magical marvel. Theme parks in the ancient Zanarkand had similar awe inspiring attractions, but nothing as amazing as the suspended rocks with lighting bolts.
“That happens when a summoner reaches and convenes with the fayth,” Lulu explained.
“So there’s a summoner here already?” Tidus asked aloud. He wondered if it was Dona, or heaven forbid Seymour.
Dona hadn’t seen the devastation of the failed operation. Her callous, holier-than-thou attitude would be anything but a balm to the wounded and dying.
And Seymour? Well, he was just creepy enough that Tidus just didn’t like him.
“Let’s see if we can help while we wait for them to finish,” Yuna suggested.
The others agreed, and they volunteered to help where they could.
Tidus watched Yuna rush into a room where there was much groaning. Her hand rested on the doorframe, and the ring he had given her glinted on her finger.
No one seemed to notice.
Even when they returned to camp last night, no one noticed. Lulu and Wakka were already asleep, while Kamahri and Auron took their first watch. Pleasant greetings were exchanged before Kamahri offered some of the cooked fish they had left over from dinner. Then they fell asleep shortly after.
Now it was the next day, and their engagement was official. Who did he talk to about that? They did say he had until Djose Temple to figure it out. And he did.
But it didn’t seem like a good time to bring it up. Would Yuna do so? It was her idea after all.
Tidus was directed to a cot with a wounded crusader on it. The man had a piece of shrapnel in his stomach, and Auron, one of the only others in the room with a strong stomach, was tasked to pull it out.
Tidus was to hold the poor bastard down by the shoulders, while Wakka had his legs.
And it continued like that for a few hours. The patients were different, but the job was the same. Some were being amputated, while others were just getting stitches.
But no matter what, it seemed like Operation Mi’ihen’s casualties were far from over.
By mid-afternoon, the summoner in the cloisters finally emerged. A man named Isaaru, and his brother-guardians.
Finally, a polite summoner. He did rib Yuna a little, but it felt like friendly rivalry compared to Dona’s outright harassment.
“The cloisters are empty, you two should go.” Auron urged Tidus and Yuna.
“But there’s more people to heal...”
“We can spare some potions. Now, go.”
Hard pressed to argue, Yuna simply turned to Tidus. “Will you come to the trials with me?”
“I did the first two on my own. I think I can handle another.”
“Oh, I’ll help too.” She smiled.
“Oh then, I have nothing to worry about. After you?”
They still didn’t speak of the impending wedding, but Tidus still tried to be the best fiancé/guardian he could be. He didn’t allow her to lift a finger, though she figured most of the puzzles out on her own. He moved the pedestals, he inserted the spheres, and when it came to leaping across a live electric pit, he gladly made the jump for her. They then reset the puzzle and activated the floor panel, which allowed them to go up to the next level. This time, Yuna helped him push all the pedestals into place and revealed the stairs to the Fayth.
He followed behind her as she ascended the stairs.
The door to the chamber opened for her, and she turned to look at him in question.
“I’ll wait right here for you,” he promised, sitting on the floor.
She offered a smile, and went inside.
And so he waited. Patiently, ankles crossed.
This would be the first time he waited the entirety of her prayer. The last two times, he came in at the end.
This time, he was alone in his waiting. The other guardians were busy helping downstairs.
Besaid had taken her two days, but Kilika was only about an hour. Was she getting better at whatever happened in there? Or was it based on the Fayth itself?
His ignorance to this whole situation was like a punch to the gut.
Wakka was right. Yuna needed someone that was more educated on Yevon, who could help her.
And yet, he could only believe she needed someone to remind her to be human more. Sure, if he knew more, it might help. Maybe he’d try a little harder to learn the  religion. If only to stop embarrassing her with his ignorance.
Yuna emerged two hours later, sweaty and panting. He caught her before she could faint, and brought her back down into the temple.
He sat her on the stairs to the cloisters and retrieved a flask of water for her. “Better?”
“Yes, thank you for taking care of me.”
“As a fiancé should,” he smirked.
There was a loud gasp at that, and they both turned to see—Shindig? Shanda? The pious lady they had met on the Mi’ihen Highroad, standing not too far away. “Truly?! Is what I hear correct? You are to be married to Lady Yuna?”
The other guardians, who had not been informed that he had made his decision, all came closer to listen.
“That’s right.” Yuna smiled softly. “I asked, and he accepted.”
Auron gave a thumbs up, while Wakka shook his head. Kimahri and Lulu were unreadable, but didn’t look angry at least.
“This is wonderful news! The wedding of a summoner is always a blessed occasion! Will you be waiting until you reach the temple in Bevelle?”
“Well,” said Tidus, “we were going to do it here, but...”
“An even better idea! The survivors could really do with the hope!”
Yuna sputtered. “I don’t know if it’s an appropriate time—“
“Nonsense! I’ll take care of everything! Leave it to me!” And she hurried off to find the head priest, leaving Tidus and Yuna to face the other guardians alone.
“So, were you going to tell us you said yes?” Wakka asked, arms crossed.
Tidus sighed. “We made it official last night, after all the sendings. I wanted to give Yuna something to be happy about, but we weren’t going to push it. Especially with everything that happened.”
“We did give him until Djose to reach a decision,” Lulu reminded patiently. “There’s no reason for you to be angry.”
“I just wish he had the common sense to say no.”
Tidus frowned at Wakka, crossing his arms.
“So what made you change your mind, ah? Wanna get in on that post-sin glory?”
Tidus’s heart raced a little faster as he confessed. “I just wanted to say yes. I don’t want her to be lonely.”
Lulu smirked. “Sounds as altruistic as can be. If Yuna wants a companion that doesn’t interfere with her quest, I’m for it.”
Yuna blushed. “Well you didn’t have to say it like that.”
Before more teasing could ensue, the head priest arrived. “I hear there is a couple wishing to be wed?”
Yuna bowed to him. “Yes sir, my guardian and I. But if you’re busy with the operation, we don’t want to intrude.”
“Nonsense. Everyone is stable, and you have done so much to help us. It’s the least we can do for repayment.”
So it was happening. It was really happening. Marriage. At seventeen. And he hadn’t even gotten her pregnant first.
Were they going to have sex tonight? Yuna didn’t seem the type. Would she try for the sake of legitimacy? He certainly wasn’t going to force her into anything. He’d let her take the lead. This was her idea anyway.
A stone pillar, much like the ones in the cloister, raised out of the ground. It had a little dome with two holes on either side.
“Now reach inside and clasp hands, so the soul scryer may tell if your souls are compatible for the soul bonding ceremony.”
Tidus blinked several times, hearing things he was not prepared for. “The what what?”
“Isn’t a soul binding ceremony...a little antiquated?” Asked Auron.
Shalinda, who had returned with the priest gasped. “Oh no! It’s a beautiful and sacred ceremony!”
“Huh...just for some of us who are a little...out of practice...” Tidus mentioned sheepishly.
Lulu explained. “The soul binding ceremony is an ancient wedding practice, in which the souls are joined in life, so the beloved can find each other in death.”
“It’s not to be taken lightly.” Wakka urged.
“It’s just for show,” Yuna whispered. “They can’t actually bind our souls. But if the idea bothers you—“
“No no, it’s okay. It’s not going to, like, hurt or anything, right? Or change me as a person?”
“The more compatible you are, the less of an effect you should feel on yourself.” The priest explained. “Come, present yourselves to the soul scryer.”
No point in putting it off any longer. He put his hand in on one side, and Yuna put hers in the other. They met in the middle and entwined fingers.
Immediately, the scryer turned blue, then a blinding white.
Tidus spoke while covering his eyes, “is that a good thing?”
“Blessed be this day! A summoner is a perfect match for her beloved! This union will be wonderful and prosperous in love!”
Okay. So a good thing it was. He and Yuna a perfect match? What were the odds?
It seemed pretty low, considering the bright blush on Yuna’s face.
“Are you okay?” He asked.
“Yes—just—“ she rested her free hand on her face. “Perfect matches are really rare. I didn’t know...”
He squeezed her hand. “Hey, it’s alright. I’m not upset. Actually, quite the opposite! No need to be embarrassed!”
She gave him a weak smile, obviously still embarrassed despite his reassurance.
“Let us begin the ceremony. Did you bring a change of vestments?” Asked the high priest.
“Ah, no. Please, we’d like to be as streamlined as possible. We don’t want to take up any more resources than necessary.” Yuna bowed again.
“Very well.”
Both of them removed their hands from the scryer, as it lowered back down into the floor. Then the head priest urged Yuna and Tidus to follow him to the door to the cloisters. They stood at the top of the stairs, while the other guardians and other witnesses gathered around to watch.
Yuna raised her hands for him to hold. And he did so daintily.
“O Fayth, O song of the Farplane. Hear as we call out to you in prayer. This couple has sought to be joined in the holiest of traditions. In soul, love, and flesh and bone. Knit them together in a tapestry of absolution. Bind their souls so that they may find each other in the end. May their love be pure and strong, and may they find peace and strength within each other.”
He looked at both. “Do you have the rings?”
Tidus took out his, and Yuna awkwardly took off the one she was wearing, then they traded.
“Tidus, please repeat after me: ‘I, Tidus,”
“I, Tidus,”
“Do take Lady Yuna, to have and hold, in sickness and in health, to the Farplane do we part.”
“Do take Lady Yuna, to have and hold, in sickness and health, to...not even the Farplane do we part.”
The wording change was not lost on those assembled. Especially Yuna, who smiled bashfully.
“You may place the ring on her finger.”
Tidus took off his gloves, and then very delicately slid the ring onto her finger.
“Lady Yuna, if you will repeat after me: I, Lady Yuna,”
“I, Lady Yuna,”
“Do take Tidus, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, to the Farplane do we part.”
She smiled. “Do take Tidus, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, to not even the Farplane do we part.”
“Non Traditional vows, but lovely nonetheless.” The priest praised. “You may place the ring on his finger.”
Just as he had done, Yuna slid the ring onto his finger. Then she squeezed his hands affectionately.
“I pronounce you, in the name of Yevon, husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Yuna blushed again, then whispered, “I’ve never kissed before.”
“Well, do you want a normal first kiss? Or a traditional Zanarkand wedding kiss?”
“Hmm, I’ll try the Zanarkand wedding kiss.”
He winked at her, before holding her close. “Hang on to me.”
Yuna only had a minute to hold around his neck, before he lowered her into a dip, and pressed a deep and meaningful kiss to her lips.
Those gathered either gasped in shock or wolf-whistled. Either way, Tidus realized maybe these people weren’t used to such public displays of affection.
But still, her kiss felt incredible. She was warm and soft, she smelled of flowers and this unnamed spice that tingled his nose.
The kiss only lasted a few seconds, but when he righted her, she had a contented and gleeful smile on her face.
Then applause broke out, and they returned to reality.
Married. They were married. Officially. There was no going back now.
Not that he wanted to. Yuna was wonderful. She deserved as much support as she could get, and he was honored that she picked him.
“Presenting Lady Yuna, and her husband, Sir Tidus!”
The ‘Sir’ was a nice touch. Did he get to keep that name?
They descended down into the crowd, receiving heartfelt handshakes and pats on the back of congratulations. People were genuinely happy, and it was a relief to see people smiling. Maybe getting married now really wasn’t a bad idea.
“Many congratulations on your marriage, Lady Yuna.” Isaaru bowed. “I hope your husband aids you on your pilgrimage.”
“Of course I will!” Tidus exclaimed, like suggesting otherwise was ludicrous. “I’ll do anything to help Yuna.”
“Glad to hear it. Well, may the first to Zanarkand be the winner. We’ll be moving on to Macalania.”
“Oh, and a word of warning for you and your guardians,” his guardian added. “Rumor is that summoners have gone missing on the road to Zanarkand. Best keep sharp.”
“Well, thank you for the warning! We’ll be extra diligent!” Tidus saluted.
“Glad to hear it. Now, we’ll let you go. Heard you did a lot of sendings for these poor folks. You must be exhausted.”
“It’s always an honor to perform such a ceremony. Thank you for thinking of my well-being though.”
After marinating in the glad tidings of the crowd, the head priest approached the couple. “The ceremonial cleansing is ready for you both, if you desire it. I assume you’d like to get cleaned up after the ordeal you’ve been through.”
“Oh!” Yuna blushed. “Ah, yes, well, that would be nice...”
“What’s wrong?” Tidus asked softly.
“The ceremonial cleansing is basically a bath that the wedded couple share. The temples are almost all built on hot springs for this reason, and for summoners to take baths on their journeys. We really don’t have to...”
“I mean, I would like to get cleaned up. I wouldn’t want to offend my ladyship’s nostrils.”
Yuna giggled and then glanced at the priest, who was looking at them curiously, either concerned that Tidus didn’t know about the hot springs that everyone else knew about, or that this newly wedded couple wasn’t absolutely ecstatic to be bathing together.
“Alright. Let’s try it.” Said Yuna, with a little forced optimism. “I’m sure we’ll be seeing...a lot of each other, from now on. Might as well get used to it.”
Tidus held out his hand to her, and followed the priest outside the temple. He had remembered seeing a river when they had arrived here, and they weren’t too far from the ocean. The hot springs, however, were inside the rock on the back side of the temple. The priest led them into a little alcove in the mountains. There was a single, wide tub, where milky water was already steaming. There was a collection of soaps and perfumes near the edge, and a pair of towels and robes hanging nearby.
“If you leave your clothes in this basket, we will make sure they are cleaned and returned to you in the morning.”
Yuna bowed in gratitude. “Thank you for all of this. It is much appreciated.”
“You are most welcome, Lady Yuna, and Sir Tidus. If there’s anything else we can do, do not hesitate to ask.” He bowed at the waist, and exited the room.
“I could get used to being called ‘Sir’, that's very fun.” Tidus said with a laugh.
“I’m glad you enjoy it. I worried that the attention would make you uncomfortable.”
“There’s still time,” He chuckled. Then he glanced at the water. “How about I turn around so you can get undressed, and then once you’re in the water, I’ll join you?”
“Alright.” She agreed with a relaxed sigh.
Tidus turned around, and waited patiently for her to give the okay. Instead, she gave a series of frustrated grunts. “You good?”
“Lulu tied my Obi too tight, and I’m having a little trouble getting the knot out…”
“Can I help?”
She chuckled, “you can try.”
He turned around, seeing the problem immediately. She had pulled on the bow, but the knot remained.
“You’d think I’d know how to undo this stupid thing, but in my haste, and I pulled the wrong side.”
“No judgement from me.” He dug his fingers into the knot and slowly got it untangled, and then completely undone. With the obi gone, a lot more skin was visible, and he awkwardly tried to avert his gaze. “Is that good? Need help with anything else?” He cringed. “Not that I want to undress you, just if you were having any other wardrobe malfunctions…”
She giggled. “I understood. No, I got the rest of it.”
Glad that he hadn’t offended her, he turned back around and began to unbuckle his bracer.
Once he was down to his shorts, he heard Yuna get into the water.
“Okay, I’m decent.” She claimed.
She was just a head above the water. She was so cute that he let a giggle out.
“Why are you laughing?” She pouted.
“Nothing. I’m just surprised you’re letting me see your neck!”
“I’m modest!”
“And it’s very becoming.” He kicked off his boots and socks and went to remove his pants. But he glanced at her beforehand, and noticed she was completely turned away.
“Oh come on now, you don’t have to look away. We’re married after all.”
“I need to work my way up to that point.” She urged. “You may be my husband...but you’re still sort of a stranger.”
Now fully naked, Tidus splashed into the water, and scooted closer to her. “I think you’re the strange one. You proposed to me after all.”
“And you accepted.”
“Touché.”
“And maybe I did rush things. Maybe proposing was impulsive.”
“You’re not having cold feet now, are you?”
“What? No, my feet are very warm!”
“Is that not a phrase these days? Where I come from, ‘getting cold feet’ means that you’re regretting a wedding. Usually before the ceremony.”
“It’s a common thing?”
“Unfortunately, yes. Lots of people get married for all different reasons. And not all of them are good.”
“Do you think we got married for the right reasons?” She looked at him with big, sad eyes.
“Well, I hope so. You wanted a companion for your journey, right? A taste of romance?”
“If I hadn’t been a summoner, I would have just asked you to dinner, and see where things went. But...I’m on a bit of a tight schedule, you see. I don’t get to watch things unfold. If I want something, I have to take it.”
“So you wanted me?” He moved his leg, and his knee brushed against her bare thigh.
She blushed. “When you put it like that, it makes it sound like...like I was lusting after you.”
“I wouldn’t blame you if you were. I know I’m irresistible.”
She smiled at him. “You are pretty cute.”
“Hey! I’ll take it!” He glanced over the shelf of soaps, and popped the caps to sample them. There was a really nice fruity one. “Would you mind if I washed your hair?”
At this point, Tidus was worried she was going to pass out from how red her face was. “I—if you want to? You don’t have to!”
“Think of it as a bonding activity.”
“...okay...”
She settled in front of him, arms wrapped around her chest (though he had no way of seeing). He took a pitcher and wetted her hair, then very carefully started to massage the shampoo in.
The sensation sent chills up her spine. “It’s...weird. But nice.”
“Just like me.”
She let out a very unladylike snort.
“Cute.”
“No it’s not! I used to get picked on for that all the time when I was younger. So embarrassing!”
“Well, I think it’s cute. And my opinion is the only one that matters.”
She just snorted again. “Quit making me laugh!”
“I can’t help it! It’s my natural charm!”
He scrubbed at her scalp, doing his best to get the sand out from the beach. Then he used the pitcher to rinse, before applying conditioner and rinsing again.
“There we go. Squeaky clean.”
“Then it’s only fair that I return the favor,” she announced.
Now it was his turn to blush. “Well...I guess that’s fair.”
“Are you afraid I’m going to find out you aren’t actually this tan? Just dirty?”
“I am tan! It’s from training in the sun. Even then, I have naturally darker skin.”
“Did I hit a sensitive topic?” She couldn’t help but laugh.
“No, I’m just usually very hygienic, so your world with no showers or deodorant is making me uncomfortable.”
“I truly am learning so much about you in just a little time.”
“I have nothing to hide from you,” except one major thing, “so feel free to ask whatever you want.”
It continued like that. Yuna washed his hair, and then he washed her back and shoulders while she returned the favor. They talked, they laughed, they teased and flirted, all until they turned pruney and Yuna yawned.
“I’m sorry, you’re probably exhausted, and I’m keeping you up. Let’s get ready for bed.” Again, he stayed turned away so that she could get out and get dressed in the silk robe provided by the temple. He followed along soon after, and they returned to the temple. They were then escorted to a private room reserved for summoners. It had one big bed, and a stone floor.
Tidus frowned, but got to work searching through the cabinets. They were mostly empty, as the supplies had gone to all the survivors in the other parts of the temple.
“What are you looking for?” Yuna asked.
“I was looking for another blanket and pillow. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Oh!” She sounded horrified at the idea. “You don’t need to do that! There’s plenty of room on this bed for both of us! We might not even touch!”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course! You were working just as hard as me today. You don’t need to sleep on the cold ground!” It was rather endearing how indignant she was. She crossed her arms over her chest and frowned. “I can’t have my guardian having a poor night’s sleep.”
“Alright, alright.” He chuckled. “You get in first, and I’ll take the outside.”
She crawled in the bed, and tucked herself close to the wall to make sure he had plenty of space. Then he scooted under the blankets and turned his back to her, and then turned out the bedside lamp.
“Goodnight, Yuna.”
“Goodnight.”
After a moment, she spoke up. “Tidus?”
He decided to mess with her a little and didn’t answer.
“I know you can’t already be asleep.”
“Ahem,” he cleared his throat.
“What?”
“My full title, please.”
She snorted. “Sir Tidus?”
He rolled over. “Yes, My dear Lady Yuna? What can I do for you?”
“You’re ridiculous.”
“I’m only kidding. You can call me whatever you like. I’ll make everyone else call me ‘Sir’.”
“What if I want to call you something cutesy? Like Snookie Wookums?”
“I love it, because everyone else will hate it.”
She giggled.
“What were you going to say earlier? When we said goodnight?”
“Oh…um. I was just wondering…if you would give me a goodnight kiss?”
He sat up a little on his arms. “Yuna, I would love to give you a goodnight kiss.” Since it was dark, he reached out for her, and cupped her cheek with his hand. Then he slowly leaned in and kissed her lips, oh so gently, oh so sweetly. “How was that?”
She hummed, and then answered. “Perfect. I’ll be able to sleep now. Thank you.”
“Anytime…Snookie Wookums.”
She snorted.

Survey #446
“so you can throw me to the wolves  /  tomorrow i will come back, leader of the whole pack”
Favourite cheese? American. Superman or Batman? I know literally nothing of Superman, but I like Batman. Who are your best friends? The only person I consider a best friend is Sara. Name the 3 most important people in your life: My mom, Sara, and... I suppose myself since I cherish my mental health VERY deeply. Are you currently learning from anyone how to play any instruments? No. Do you know anyone who is overly flirty with people? Girl or a boy? In my personal opinion, yes. I do believe it's possible to be "overly" flirty, considering you can really lead people on. It's a she. Do you believe vampires are real? Not the stereotypical Twilight kind. No. Have you ever been to a porn website? Were you addicted to it afterword? No. I'm really not into that. What is the most disgusting thing you think the opposite sex can do? I think the most disgusting thing anyone can do is commit rape. Would you rather be able to teleport or freeze time? Which one seems best? I feel teleportation is obviously more convenient and useful in dangerous situations. Have you seen the movie Twister? Did the tornadoes look real to you? LKJFL;AKSDJFKLASJDLFKA;WE NOOOOOOOOOO. I am WAY too terrified of tornadoes to watch that. Have you actually been through a devastating natural disaster before? Hurricane Floyd was pretty devastating. I was too young to really remember it, though. Did your mom ever fix your eggs and bacon into a smiley face as a kid? She probably did. What fast food place, in your opinion, has the best french fries? BOJANGLE'S, AHHHHHHHHHHHH. Do you believe one day aliens might take over the planet Earth? I mean, it's possible, but I don't know. Do you remember when they used to actually throw candy out at parades? I didn't know they stopped. Does it bother you when people burp around you or do you do it too? I couldn't possibly care less, it's a natural bodily function. Just because of societal standards though, I don't burp in public, though, but only around family and close friends. What is one kind of music you’d do anything to not listen to in the car? Anything like rap that has a STUPIDLY loud bass that just annoys everyone within a ten mile radius. When was the last time you babysat, if ever? Did anything bad happen? A year or two ago, for my nephew. No one else was free to watch him, so I had no choice. Nothing bad happened, besides nearly having a panic attack. Do you ever talk to people you met online through webcam? Or is that weird? No. Even Sara and I don't do it, because I'm too self-conscious of how I look. Even though she's seen me plenty before irl. Would you ever consider becoming a scientist? Why would you or why not? Well, I majored in biology briefly... I wanted to be a wildlife biologist. I just adore animals and thought I could do it. I just couldn't handle school. When is the next time you’ll talk to the cousin you’re closest to? I'm not especially close to any of my cousins. Are you really into vintage things? Have you ever been into that stuff? Yessss! is writing something that you enjoy doing? Definitely. Would you rather read or write? Write. Would you rather draw or take photographs? If I wind up being very proud of the product, I prefer drawing, but I take pictures far more. When was the last time you cheated at something? I have no clue. Has anyone ever copied off of your homework assignments? I think so? Do you have any pictures of celebs saved to your computer? ... *stares at my folder labelled "Mark"* What would you consider your favorite holiday? Why is this? Christmas. I love the whole vibe of it. The weather, the smells, the treats, my niece's and nephew's excitement... I adore all the lights and decorations, the gratefulness for family and your loved ones in general... I just love Christmas. If you’re a girl, do you have big hips? Too big? I'd say my hips are normal. Girls, do you think you look good in dresses or not? God no. Not anymore. Have you ever taken a pottery class before? Nope. How many times have you seen Star Wars? Be honest. Once. I didn't like it. Has your best friend ever made you cry? Yes. But in her defense, we've both made the other cry. Have you ever entered a talent competition? God no, I ain't got shit to flaunt. Are you smiling in your Facebook profile picture? Yes. If you wear eye shadow, do you put on a dark colour or a light? And if you wear mascara, what colour is it? I only ever wear black for both of those. What is your favourite Christmas movie? Jim Carrey's How the Grinch Stole Christmas. What do you get complimented on the most? My Markiplier tattoo, actually. What do you think of your best friend’s ex? One I REALLY don't like, the other I'm neutral about. Are you biracial? No. Do you have Pop-Tarts in your house right now? No. We try to not buy them, given they're just TOTALLY empty calories. They don't fill me at all. Is anyone’s birthday coming up? No. Does/did either of your parents serve in the military? No. Do you like sour candy? I LOVE sour candy. Where would you like to go on your honeymoon? Alaska, to see the Northern Lights. Do you usually wear sunglasses when you’re driving? I haven't driven in well over a year. Hell, maybe two. But no, because I'd need prescription sunglasses. Ignoring nutrition, could you live off veggies for the rest of your life? God no. Has anyone taken their shirt off in front of you? Yeah. What time do you usually have dinner? 5:30-6:30, usually. What’s your favourite meat? Chicken, I think. What is your favourite meal of the day and why? Breakfast. I just enjoy breakfast foods. What colour is your shampoo? White. Tell me a silly little old wive’s tale you believed when you were a child: My older sister got me to believe that if you said a word a ridiculous amount of times, it'd be the only word you knew how to say anymore, lmao. Shut up, I was little. What was the last magazine you bought? Do you subscribe to any? I don't buy magazines. Whose Facebook profile did you last look at? Was there anything that caught your attention? Uh, that's a good question. Do you regret your last relationship? Not at all. What’s better, mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes? Mashed potatoes, though I'm picky with them and the texture. Did you ever used to make cookies, cakes, or pie with your grandma? No. Do you like kids? Not especially. They ask too many questions and can be really rude, even though I know they usually don't mean to be. What are you listening to? I'm watching Gab Smolders play Dino Crisis 2. I finished her playthrough of Final Fantasy X, so now I feel a void in my soul that I am trying to fill with a new series lmao. Do you burn incense? Not really anymore. I'm not against it, I just... haven't. What is your favorite kind of cracker? Cheese-Itz. Can you name a single song by Billy Joel without looking it up? Yeah; I can name a few, actually. My dad loves Billy Joel, so I heard him a lot growing up. "Piano Man" is a classic. Do you like regular peppermint candy canes, or do you prefer different flavored ones [fruits, bubble gum, cinnamon, etc.]? I actually really like the Jolly Rancher ones. Have you ever been kissed while sitting atop the hood of a car? That's actually possible... but I'm not sure. I think I have a faint memory of lying on a car hood with Jason before. What do you think is the dumbest/tackiest piercing? I don't like calling a piercing either of those, like if they make someone feel more confident and attractive, good for them. I can say I'm personally not a fan of the smiley piercing, though. Have you ever requested a song on the radio? No. When I was a kid at a birthday party, though, one of the girls did. Does your mother still take care of you if you get ill? She helps a lot, yeah. What is one song that always brings back memories every time you hear it? Honestly, too many. I attach way too aggressively to songs. Do you currently have any pimples? Not currently, no. Did anything disturb your sleep at all last night? Ugh, yes. I couldn't sleep for shit. How does it make you feel looking at pics with your ex and someone else? I have only seen one picture of Jason with the girl he dated after me and it. Set. Me. On. Fucking. Fire. It's pathetic. If you’re not in college, why? All it did was give me emotional breakdowns. What do you think about MTV? I am way too out of the loop on what goes on on any TV channel to answer this. What was your very first day of your very first job like? What’d you do? How long did it take you to get the hang of it, and feel comfortable with working? This was waaaay too long ago... All I remember is actually being hopeful, though nervous. I never got to the point of feeling comfortable there. Or at any job. If you have a dog, are they friendly to strangers or other dogs? We don't have a dog, but we do have a cat that is EXTREMELY skittish around strangers. Someone he doesn't know comes through the door? He's bolting to hide. Do people ever comment on or joke about your driving? Well, I got flipped off once by a driver, so... I'd consider that a silent comment. I, to this day, don't know why they (it was a group of guys) did it, but it's stuck with me. What was the last thing to move you? Are you easily moved or inspired? The ending of FFX alsdkfjkaljlkwjer. And yes. If you`ve ever seen your very favorite band, did you cry when you saw them? Was it like a dream come true? If you`ve never seen them, do you think you would? I haven't, but I probably would a little bit. Of all the reality competitions you’ve watched, who are some of your all-time favorite contestants and what shows were they from? From America's Got Talent, I adore(d) Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., as well as Prince Poppycock. I keep up with them both on Facebook. Ever had a friend named Alex or John? One of my closest online friends was Alex. A couple years ago she just... got a boyfriend and fell off the face of the earth. Are you happy with your relationship status? I mean... no, I'm ridiculously lonely, but being single is for the best right now. What kind of stuff do you like on your hot dogs? Just ketchup and mustard. Have you ever been in a spelling bee? No. What is the most annoying thing that your parents do? Mom absolutely always assumes she's right. Dad repeats himself like CRAZY. Would you say you’re someone who has good manners? Yes. Did you parents know what gender you were before you were born? Actually, the doctors couldn't determine mine (or any of Mom's kids') because my legs were ALWAYS crossed when they did ultrasounds. Mom says she "knew" I was a girl, though. Have you ever been addicted to something unhealthy? I'm addicted to caffeine, yes. Who makes the best desserts in your entire family? Hm, I dunno. Do you have good dreams or nightmares more? I have very severe sleep apnea that results in very violent nightmares almost any time I sleep without my APAP mask. Even WITH the damn mask, I have them a lot. When was the last time someone insulted you? What was the insult? *shrug* Do you have trouble reading small fonts? Yes. I used to find it aesthetically pleasing, but my vision is just too bad now, even with my (shitty) glasses. Do you know anybody that believes that magic/witchery truly exists? I think so. Do you find watching animals in their natural habitat to be exciting & fascinating? Absolutely!! The last time you had sex: did you want it, or did the other person want it? ... You know it's supposed to be a mutual desire, right?? What does your sibling(s) call you? "Britt." Has anyone you’ve known claimed to be psychic? Maybe? I'm unsure. Did/do you believe them? Hell no. I don't believe in psychics and believe people who claim to be so are manipulative pieces of shit. Is anything annoying you right now? I am bored to an inexplicable level askldjfla;wejlr. Have you ever worn a pair of scrubs? Yeah. Anything in your room that you’re hiding from your parents or someone else? No. Have you ever felt abandoned? Well yes. By definition, my dad abandoned our family. Where are you? I’m in my bed. What’s been the worst part of this day? I've just been so, so bored. I'm sick and fucking tired of dealing with anhedonia. Who last encouraged you to better yourself? My therapist.

I’m tempted to vid all of the Buffy musical songs.
SoKai from KH to “Let Me Rest in Peace”... don’t ask. Though I did explain that once.
Tuna from FFX-2 to “Going Through the Motions”?
Sora from KH to “Give Me something to Sing About”, based on my AU where he’s actually sad to be brought back to life because he was in heaven.
Neku and Joshua from TWEWY to “Under Your Spell”. Though now that I think about it, Madoka and Homura from Madoka might be better.
Jack and Sydney from Alias to “Wish I Could Stay” (and its reprise. Also, Sydney and Vaughn to Tara’s part in the reprise? Though once again... Madoka and Homura would work well for that, too. But I’m thinking of making this a whole Alias video).
Tenchi and Ryoko from Tenchi to “I’ll Never Tell”.
Probably Naminé from KH to the two seconds of Dawn’s song: “Does anybody notice? Does anybody even care?”:(
I actually haven’t figured out “Walk Through the Fire” yet!
But RokuShi from KH, oddly, to the “Walk Through the Fire/Let Me Rest in Peace Reprise”.
Probably nothing to “I’ve Got a Theory”, unless I get inspiration.
The ending of KHIII to “Where Do We Go From Here?”

Some Random 5.2 Thoughts
Under the cut because spoilers!
Ruby Weapon/Sorrow of Werlyt
I like how they have been including the EX fight series (I know technically the EX fights aren’t the “canon” fights but for a lack of a better way to phrase it, I’m calling them the EX fight series) and making them more integral to the MSQ.  I know they first kind of did this with the Four Lords quest, which I actually thought was one of the better quests in Stormblood.  The story branched out from the MSQ and they did the same with the Werlyt quests, which I think is cool.  My one gripe about the Warring Triad quests from HW is that they felt important but they were kind of removed from the main story, so I think overall this way of storytelling just feels better?  It feels like... everything is more connected?  Which I really like.
I know Gaius in this quest series has been kind of controversial and I have my opinions on the discourse but I’m not gonna talk about it because I don’t feel like adding fuel to the fire.  Overall, I thought the Ruby Weapon fight was tragic to replay when I did inevitably get the fight in Duty Finder.  That poor girl. ;__;
An FCmate commented to me about sometimes how it feels like the devs can’t “let go of Coil”, which I do agree-- there’s a lot of homages to Coil in the game.  The latter half of Ruby Weapon is def a big homage to T9 and I kind of wish it hadn’t been, if I’m honest.  I like when they interconnect fights with similar mechanics for lore reasons, but having Nael show back up was kinda off-putting this time.  It felt like they just wanted to add Nael to add Nael and eh.  I could’ve done without it but I did enjoy the fight a lot.  Nael showing up was a huge gasp moment for sure.
I feel like each fight with this series is gonna wreck my heart lmao, I don’t wanna see Gaius have to watch his kids die one by one ;__;
If they make the Duskwight evil, so help me God, I am going to scream.
Gaius is distractingly hot.
I cannot wait to see what they do with the Sapphire Weapon.  Are we gonna get to fire a cannon at it?  Is someone else gonna pop out a la Nael style?
The nod to Oversoul from FFX-2 was not missed on me, good job SE.
Eden’s Verse
Thancred being a protective dad figure to Ryne has me feeling feelings every time.  I was kinda lukewarm towards Thancred til HW and his growth just continues to impress me.  The day that he has to say bye to Ryne is gonna break my heart, I just know it.
Gaia was a huge surprise to me.  I didn’t think she was gonna act like that?  I was expecting someone more reserved and with full knowledge of what she was doing.  But tbh?  I was not disappointed.  She provided a really good foil to Ryne and I hope they enjoy their coffee biscuits because they earned them.
Every time someone bitches about Gaia’s lips in shout chat, I wanna scream lmao, sometimes people just have big lips, it’s not a novel concept people.
Gaia yelling at the end of E8 about wanting to see what tomorrow will bring inspired my depressed ass to go outside so thank you for your motivation, Gaia.
Ryne fusing with Shiva was kind of weird to me, but the concept of a merged Hydaelyn/Shiva like fight was neat.  I don’t really like the Redress mechanic.  I feel like there’s a implications and it doesn’t take a lot of digging to really see those implications. I know some people are trying to justify it because she’s fusing with the idea of a thousands of years old person but to me, it’s physically still Ryne and that... makes me feel weird about the mechanic.  Like they really didn’t have to add that in.  I worry that may add more fuel to the already on-fire dumpster bin of pedophiles in this game that lewd on her.
THAT BEING SAID... all of the songs were bangers, bless you Soken.  Shiva’s theme has been playing nonstop in my apartment and I cannot wait for the official lyrics to be released!
MSQ
Funnily enough, I was kinda meh about the MSQ lmao.  I feel like this + 5.1 was a lot of build and there hasn’t been much payoff, not like we got at the end of 5.0.  I feel like it’s time we get answers for something at least, not more questions.  The Echo being part of our Amaurotine heritage didn’t feel exactly groundbreaking-- it felt obvious.  Elidibus being “Ardbert” was also obvious.  It just confirmed what we already kind of figured.
Urianger trying to walk on water made me laugh out loud but then feel horrible because there’s some dark implications there.
Venat as a namedrop made me soft gasp too because the similarities between the Occuria from FFXII and the Amaurotines were never obvious to me but now they are.  Venat seems to be playing a similar role as they did in XII-- disobeying the ruling elite, or Convocation.  As a big XII nerd, I was very hype about Venat being in XIV.
The Rak’tika part felt kind of pointless if I’m honest, but it was fun.  I felt like it was there to buff the story and didn’t supplement it well.  Except the bit with Runar.  Poor Runar.  That being said, I didn’t mind returning to the Greatwood because I love that area.
I am far from a Zenos stan but I’m curious about his visions of the Final Days.  I feel like this was the most surprising part of the MSQ tbh.
Qitari
I just started this questline but holy crap, La Hee becoming canon was the best thing about this patch hands down.

WIP interview questions
My week is just about up for @alexprompts wipweekly event, better answer these ASAP! Sorry for the busy weekend, and thank you so much for the spot on the event!
CURRENT ACHIEVEMENTS:
What’s the word count of your WIP currently?
My current draft is only at 10,685 words but I hope to add 50,000 is November!
Which scene are you the most proud of, and without (or with, if you’d prefer) spoilers, can you share an excerpt?
My current draft is still in a very young stage so from where it starts to where it is now there isn’t much I’m exactly proud of. However, there is a scene that I rather excited to get to and I’m proud of it in the sense that it really captures the chaos of my main villains the Flame Emporer and his children. I can’t share an excerpt since right now it’s just in my head, but I think I’ll write up the scene and share it sometime soon!
Can you explain the development of three characters you particularly enjoy for us, and where you drew their personalities from, or how they develop throughout the story?
This question seems hard to answer for me... at least, I’m thinking very complex for the answer.
I rather like Neria, she is a major bad-ass who is always so calm and cool and I love to draw out a more compassionate part of her as she learns to consider her own wants and desires.
Kor is always fun because you never really know what’s going on with him. He is very chaotically eccentric, yet everything he does always accomplishes something. When I write him, I think with his goals in mind but also that he is very bored with everything and just wants a little excitement at any expense. every time my characters think they have him figured out, they realize they don’t. I draw his character from the idea of “fun for fun’s sake.”
Another character I always enjoy writing is Chess. Being a fey, I draw their personality from that lot, being a trickster and all. Unlike with Kor, not even Chess’ base actions or what they say make sense, though also unlike Kor my characters end up understanding it, especially when they need it most.
SHORT TERM GOALS:
What’s the aim of sharing on tumblr?
Really, it’s to try to meet other writers and share our stories to one another.
What’s the biggest changes, progress, or development you would like to make to Immortal Warrior before the end of the year?
I’d really like to be done with the first draft if possible haha, other than that I want to continue intricate world and character building and actually recording it.
What draft are you currently on, and how would you like to see it evolve?
I am currently on my third draft, my previous two just weren’t what I wanted. I either got stuck or I just realized it wasn’t particularly good. In its current stage, I really want this draft to get completed and move onto editing and finally getting published.
LONG TERM GOALS:
Do you have a word count/ chapter amount goal?
I suppose about 90,000 for my first book. I know publishers don’t want a too high of a word count for first-time writers but I don’t want some meat on the bone.
Do you plan on publishing in the future? If so, how would you like to do so?
Of course, and however I can, really. I defiantly want physical copies, though.
If your WIP were to be turned into a movie or other form of media, what’s the most important three things you would want to be included/focused on?
Character personalities, the villains, and relationships (all sorts, not just romantic). The plot is important, of course, but I feel if you nail these three things the plot would follow suit.
What would you like to do to develop your skills as a writer?
Engage in constructive critique I suppose. You get better by knowing first that you can and knowing where to go from there.
INSPIRATION:
Which authors inspire you?
I suppose Stephen King and recently, Kel Kade. While I’m not the biggest on reading horror, King’s accomplishments are something. As for Kel Kade, I love his writing style and how fluid it is.
Which works in any form of media have helped shaped the way you like to write or plan your stories?
Oh no, there are too many. I read, I watch, I listen nonstop. Though perhaps FFX, LotR, and Dragonball Z shaped my writing the most.
Where did you get the names of each of the main characters in Immortal Warrior from, and what attracted you to them?
For the most part, I play around with sounds and names in my mouth until I like the way they sound for different characters.
Seth: I really just liked the name, but then I learned and really like the symbolism behind the name, too.
Fenrir: So I was super stuck picking a name and personality out for my mentor character and landed on Fenrir by just pulling him out of another story idea I had.
Caldour: I just played around with sounds.
Neria and Avroth: Both of these characters originated from good friends, who are also writers.

Press Start Letter
AO3: Siver
There are some pretty big groups here, so I’ll try to keep things short. Prompts are just possible starters. As long as the DNWs are avoided it’s all good! Really can’t go wrong taking anything from my Likes list. A lot of found family vibes happening in this batch so anything in that vein in particular is great.
All requests are for fic or art. Art: Interactions of some sort: emoting at each other, talking, sharing some activity, taking a walk, hugs are always welcome, soft things, whatever suits the pair/group
Likes: fluff, hurt/comfort, comfort, missing scenes, friendships, long-term friendships, close relationships of any sort whether romantic or platonic, familial bonds, found family, sickfic, AUs, fandom crossovers or fusions, angst with a happy end, bonding, cuddling/hugs/holding, banter, mutual care and support, emotional bonding, loyalty, pre-canon, post-canon, reuniting, slice of life
DNW: NSFW, non-con, dub-con, underage relationships, unrequested ships, infidelity
Ghost Trick
I love this game, its characters and pretty much everything about it, so whatever you want to do will be great I am sure. New timeline mysteries and missing memories are always welcome where it makes sense. Alternate timelines and what-ifs are cool to explore. Fluff, comfort, family found or otherwise and friendships are always a go. Any combination of these characters is more than welcome too!
Alma & Emma: Friends! Mom-friends? Knew each other before the girls were born? Is Alma Emma’s beta-reader?Is a certain detective husband merely a great inspiration and Alma is endlessly amused?
Alma & Sissel: That cat is Strange shenanigans. Alternatively Alma knows and teamup times of any sort! Or just some good old comfy cat times
Cabanela & Jowd: Close friends (or more), partners. Determination and loyalty. Really can’t go wrong with anything and these two. Case fic? Just time spent together? Mutual insufferability? Nothing like it!
Cabanela & Kamila: Best weird cool uncle! Best cool niece (whether kids are a what do situation for Cabs or not). How do they spend time together? How does he spoil her rotten?
Cabanela & Missile: Loyalty to the max--of course they get along. Anything cute/fun for these is welcome. Dog snuggles! Dance lessons! Rookie Detective Missile is on the case bark bark!
Cabanela & Pigeon Man: I’m always down for anything during the year they worked together. Alternatively what the heck might pull them together in post-game?
Cabanela/Jowd: No infidelity please. So, this could be a no-reset scenario, something during the game events–ch.9 and ch.15 stuff is always great. Or on a less angsty route, it is the ot3 or some kind of happy V. but Alma’s simply not involved if they’re at work, she’s at work, or a trip or she’s on a trip, etc, so the focus is on their end.  Fluff, bonding, banter, travel, domestic stuff, on-the-job antics either at the station or out on a case.
Cabanela/Jowd/Alma: Post-game. All the polyamory fluff! Domestic fluff, travel fluff, vacation fluff, road trip, picnics, beach trips, train trip? etc. Go for a date whatever a date might entail for these three. Hugs, snuggles, and love.  Light angst is fine too, as long as they get a happy end.
Jowd & Lynne & Memry: Detective group/mentor shenanigans. Likely chicken.
Jowd & Pigeon Man: Old friends. Anything from their past working together, or new timeline working together! Jowd’s gotten strange. There’s a meteorite. PM is intrigued.
Jowd & Sissel: Detective and Ghost Cat. Working together!
Kamila & Amelie: Anything friendship is good. Current ages or future fic/art when they’re older!
Lynne & Memry, Lynne/Memry: The Odd Girls working together drawing all the oddest cases!
Pigeon Man & Blue Doctor: Who is the Blue Doctor. How long has he been around? How might they meet and what do think of each other?
Rindge & Lynne & Memry: Odd Girls + trying-to-be-normal Rindge in an odd world. Contrasts! Clashing ways of working that manage to work!
Sissel & Missile & Lovey-Dove: The animals just hanging out doing animal things. The animals getting on a mission of their own?
Cabanela: Anything Cabanela being his sparkly determined Cabanela self. Something during his five years goal? Day to day life? A hobby? Post-game fun times? Just. Cabanela.
Crossover settings are cool too. Some other settings that I like born of Discord Talks:
FFVI: Half esper Sissel? Magic infused Cabanela with the Empire working in secret? Jowd suplexing a train? Returner Lynne somewhere back there? General Final Fantasy VI shenanigans with these characters. World of Balance? Reunions in the World of Ruin? Opera Cabanela. More info here https://archiveofourown.org/series/1169099 or here: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1196335 or here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16407494
Ivalice: Viera Cabanela! Nu Mou (Tactics Nu Mou specifically) Jowd and family! Anything here. I am more familiar with Tactics versions but anything goes. Fluff? Intrigue? Mist frenzied Cabanela and after effects–maybe the first time Jowd’s seen this happen, and particularly startling from the usually controlled Cabanela who relies more on magic?
FFX: Summoner Jowd, devoted guardian Cabanela who hates this whole process, but isn’t about to leave Jowd. Something during the journey? Something with Yunalesca? Even shortly after it’s all over but they have this new world and old scars to contend with?
Crystal Chronicles: No idea what races they’d be but if there’s something fun to be had here, fly at it. Lilty Jowd? Yuke Cabanela (got that tall bird thing going)? Something more fitting? Something something miasma, something crystals. A moment in their caravan journey?
Trails Series: The cast in Zemuria! Dominion Cabanela undercover in Arc-en-Ciel. What might his stigma be? Knight Alma of the Gralsritter assigned with Cabanela. Crossbell Chief of Police of Jowd separated from Alma some years previously to some disaster (like the manifestation of Cabanela’s stigma) and doesn’t know the other two are alive, along with his daughter Kamila who’s learning all she can about orbal tech. Reuniting! Hermit Pigeon Man orbal scientist and contact for Jowd? Is Lynne a Detective under Jowd or a Bracer? What of Memry? Other ideas entirely!
Trails in the Sky | Sora no Kiseki
Anything in any of the three Sky games or something in between them. Missing scenes, scene extensions, travel along the roads, airship travel times, etc. Ample opportunity for anything in the Garden in 3rd. I love these characters, their world, their relationships or potential for.
Estelle Bright & Cassius Bright: Any kind of father-daughter bonding time. Pre-FC, post-SC before she and Joshua set off, post-return to Liberl, anywhere something can fit really.
Estelle Bright & Olivier Lenheim | Olivert Reise Arnor: Estelle is perpetually and understandably exasperated with him, but what about a quieter moment? Parting ways after SC, or some encouragement at some point during SC for Estelle, or Estelle catching Olivier in an off moment (example: like their talk about the dreams from Luciola).
Estelle Bright & Tita Russell: Sisters! Anything showing a sisterly bond is great.
Julia Schwarz & Mueller Vander: They share the same role with drastically different charges. Relate to one another in some respects? Do some training? Commiserate? Encourage through some similar worries for Kloe and Olivier respectively?
Kevin Graham & Ries Argent: Kevin is a dumbass and is lucky Ries is patient for this self-deprecating fool. More seriously anything about their relationship is good during 3rd or post-3rd (nothing that could spoil Cold Steel III or IV please)
Olivier Lenheim | Olivert Reise Arnor: Just Olivier being Olivier during his Liberl travels either when he’s alone or while he’s with the group, whether it’s outrageous Olivier or quiet time Olivier with a hell of a long road ahead of him on this battle he’s chosen.
Kloe Rinz & Julia Schwarz: Beyond their bond as knight and princess I think they love each other platonically. Sisterly? Something showing their close bond. Helping each other out? Julia protects Kloe but Kloe protects her back in turn? Talks of duty but also personal wants?
The Legend of Heroes VII | Zero/Ao no Kiseki
These games hit my found family buttons hard. Anything portraying some kind of relationship among these characters is awesome. Any combination of these characters is more than welcome too!
Elie MacDowell: Explore Elie’s thoughts and feelings on everything that’s happening in Crossbell. What about her personal feelings on the Croises and betrayed by Mariabell? Her feelings on her own standing and what she wants?
Cecil Neues & Ilya Platiere: They’re an odd friendship and both married to their work but they make it work. Anything exploring their friendship or the time while Ilya was hospitalized--hard on both of them in different ways.
Elie MacDowell & Tio Plato & KeA: Girl’s day out! Aidios knows they could use one. Some kind of Mishy involvement is a bonus (or a necessity in Tio’s eyes).
Lloyd Bannings & KeA: Lloyd is the daddest of dads. Lloyd and KeA time of any sort is good.
Lloyd Bannings & Randy Orlando: They’ve both lost family but they can be brothers for each other. Supporting each other
Randy Orlando & Tio Plato: Big brother Randy and little sister Tio? They both lost their childhoods. Something to relate on?
Rixia Mao/Ilya Platiere: While Ilya clearly cares for Rixia, Rixia’s love may be one-sided (for the time being at least, perhaps more in the future?). Rixia’s thoughts and fears while Ilya is hospitalized. Once awake, Ilya’s concerns for what Rixia really wants and her place--she belongs with Arc-en-Ciel and they both know it
Sergei Lou & Alex Dudley: Past working together or connections in current time. Wildly different personalities but Dudley still listens to Sergei. Anything exploring their working relationship, or anything exploring them off the job on break.
Sergei Lou & KeA: Grumpy uncle Sergei cannot resist the charms of KeA. Anything familial (possibly despite himself) between these two.
Shizuku MacLaine & KeA: Let these kids be happy. Give them a good time together.
Wazy Hemisphere & Noel Seeker: The temporary SSS members, outliers that never quite fit the same as our core four. They’re completely different in personality but how might they connect at least for a little while?
Randy Orlando: Always interested in anything exploring Randy’s struggles with home and family and where his place is (the night he runs away included!). He belongs with SSS but it’s hard for him to see. Also appreciate how casino owner Drake looks out for him. He’s cared for even if he can’t always see it!
Trails of Cold Steel | Sen no Kiseki
Following the theme of these games, bonds! Old bonds, new bonds, forming bonds!
Elliot Craig & Fie Claussell: They don’t get much interaction in-game all told, but I have a special soft spot for a budding friendship between them. School days activities or something during the month they (and Machias) spent in the Celdic area between CS I and II?
Fie Clausell & Instructor Beatrix: Fie finding comfort in Beatrix’s presence. Beatrix looking out for her.
Olivier Lenheim | Olivert Reise Arnor & Alfin Reise Arnor & Mueller Vander: Olivier is Too Much. Alfin is Too Much. What is a Mueller to do when he’s got both of them around?
Olivier Lenheim | Olivert Reise Arnor & Alfin Reise Arnor: Alfin is very much Olivier’s sister. Little sister and big brother shenanigans! Or maybe something welcoming him back to Erebonia?
Olivier Lenheim | Olivert Reise Arnor & Mueller Vander, Olivier Lenheim | Olivert Reise Arnor/Mueller Vande:  Gen or romance slant. I’m good with either or one with shades of the other. I enjoy Mueller and Olivier’s closeness and how they contrast each other. Olivier’s more eccentric and flamboyant nature, but also his more serious side. And Mueller’s regular exasperation with him, but also his care for him. Being there for each other. I’m fond of the little things like how Mueller always calls him Olivier even in Erebonia when Olivert’s identity is known and public. Heimdallr fun or trouble (Olivier…). Planning against Osborne. Look after a tired Olivert? Something during the civil war when they’re in the west?
Principal Vandyck & Instructor Beatrix: Both are more than they appear. I loved the Instructor teamup in the last part of CS I and these two have a history. Explore their connection, or reminiscing. Would also be interested in their activities during Trista’s occupation.
Towa Herschel & George Nome & Angelica Rogner: Anything exploring their friendship, or perhaps something during their time as the proto Class VII or their memories of that time in comparison (or contrast) to the new Class VII?
Mueller Vander & Elise Schwarzer: Elise is sliding into a similar role for Alfin as Mueller for Olivier. Maybe he can give her some advice? Or the two stand by while their respective charges/friends are <vague gesture> That. One way or another the siblings are a handful and Mueller and Elise know it (and if forced into honesty wouldn’t have it any other way).
Pyre
Another case of give me all the found family joys. Daily activities while they travel? Post Peaceful revolution activities? (Note: I’m good with any of the _ae options for Vagabond girl for naming purposes)
Big Bertrude & Volfred Sandalwood: I adore their close friendship and that it came about from Bertrude’s unrequited love, but it’s okay, better than okay! Anything between them in their history, or during the Nightwings travels or post revolution would be great.
Big Bertrude & Sir Gilman: Big snakes and little snake. Grump and enthusiast. Awkward mutual (grudging?) respect?
Jodariel & Sir Gilman: Contrasts in everything from personality to size. Something exploring that would be great
Tariq | The Lone Minstrel & Big Bertrude: We don’t see a lot of interaction between them. How do they get along? What stories might they share? An appreciation for music or something to tolerate? What does a day in the blackwagon look like between them?
Tariq | The Lone Minstrel & Sir Gilman: The Moon and the Wyrm. Music and Knighting. Just these two interacting somehow
Vagabond Girl & Jodariel: Jodariel going mom-mode on _ae? Or just a big hug? _ae being far more enthusiastic than Jodi is used to these days?
Vagabond Girl & Sir Gilman: So much energy!
Volfred Sandalwood & Sandra: So much potential for interaction as a reader. And snark. And an unimpressed Sandra. But on some things they can maybe agree...
Volfred Sandalwood/Tariq | The Lone Minstrel: Something gentle for the tree and the moon who somehow fell for him, any time period
Ti'Zo: Imp doing imp things. Anything Ti’zo will make me happy
FFVI
All that travelling time is ripe for more interaction or character exploration. Equally interested in what they might be doing after the world is saved too.
Cayenne Garamonde | Cyan Garamonde (FFVI): Where does Cyan go when the world is saved? What is a new home for Cyan? Alternatively a look at Cyan’s time during the year between the World of Balance and the World of Ruin
Celes Chere (FFVI): Opera Celes! Celes time away from the party after Vector. Celes after the world is saved--what does she do, where does she go?
Edgar Roni Figaro & Setzer Gabbiani: King and Engineer in a mechanical moving castle? Pilot of the only airship? They could have some great talks. Maybe some proposed airship upgrades?
Thank you for anything you do!

11/11/11.... again!
ive been tagged by @surroundedbypearls & @elliswriting for 2 different sets of 11 questions, so i’ll be doing them both here! for @surroundedbypearls
What’s your favourite genre to write in and why? contemporary!! because contemporary issues are fun, and i like to write about people interacting with each other more than anything else!
Do you think you have a style/voice that you use more often in your writing? When did you develop that style? hmm... from the one creative writing class i took a few semesters ago, i guess it was kinda odd to a lot of the students there that i wrote in present tense??? i didn’t always write in present tense, i used to write in the past, but idk, over the years i just felt that present tense has a ... stronger sort of.... hmmmmm.... idk how to explain it. i just like how it feels or sound more than past tense at times.
Do you play video games? What’s your favourite? i don’t really play video games! not really a gamer. but i did play FFX and FFXIII (+ XIII-2 and lightning returns) before, though i sucked HAHAHAHA but i enjoyed them! and the only game i’m actually playing now is like... pubg on mobile, so yea. not a gamer! prefer watching people play games!
If you were going to do a WIP crossover, which OCs would be most interesting together? (If you’ve only got one WIP crossover with something else) oh yea i’d totally cross over with percy jackson that’ll be really fun! i love greek mythology anyway & i’d love to add some chinese mytho into the mix (even if i’m not particularly well-versed in it)
Do you prefer to plan WIPs in a document or through handwritten notes? in my brain, where it goes missing like, 98% of the time. sometimes i try to write notes in my phone, where it also goes missing when my phone dies. so basically... there’s no planning.
Do you multiple languages exist in your WIP? If so how do you address that in the story? not really i guess, but... well because i do imagine some characters to speak cantonese instead of chinese, and jun might also speak a lil hokkien since he’s from taiwan... i mean, i don’t really address that HAHA they are just presumed to all be speaking chinese. or, yknow, i’m doing what the good place is doing and like, everything is kinda translated for them. but it’s not said outright in the novel itself. idk man
What’s your favourite animated film that’s not Disney or Pixar? this is TOUGH because there are so many!!! hM. maybe grave of the fireflies. i love myself some history and angst.
Do your real-life surroundings influence your WIP’s settings? not at all
Which OCs would be most likely to breath the fourth wall? jun and zhen. the former has already done that.
How do you work out your OCs’ personalities? well i just observe things that i like and get inspired by them!
Do you prefer worldbuilding or character building? character!
now for @elliswriting!
What genre do you write? contemporary / fantasy
Are you a planner, pantser, or planster? i have no idea what this means but if you’re assuming i plan things out, you’ve thought wrong!
What is your approach to research? google a lot, open a bunch of tabs, let them fester while i wail over the amount of text i have to read, and leave them to lag my computer over the course of a few months or even years while i never get to them
What POV is your novel? Why are you writing it this way? third-person multi POV! well because they all have their own stories and you’ve to understand things through various characters. also, it’s more fun that way
Do you know how your story ends before you start writing? yeah, most of the times i do. the middle is the amorphous mess that i try not to touch, though
When creating characters, what comes first: appearance, backstory, motivation, personality, something else? personality! most likely, i have something that i am VERY EXCITED for the character to say (usually like... humour stuffs) and that’s where their personality gets built from
What trope do you actually like? ummmm... enemies turned friends. love it when it’s done well!!! look at zuko!!! look at scar (from fmab)!!! look at law (from one piece)!!! my loves!
How did you come up with your title? HAHA tbh i can’t really remember. i guess it’s like... okay so my title is like all things out of season, and yknow, fruits and stuff are out of season when they’ve... well, past their season. or like, when they’re no longer ripe and might be wilting and people just throw them away. and it’s kinda related to death also i think??? and since my wip is about death, they’re all kinda like... out of their ‘ripe season’ or their ‘prime’ so to speak and ... yea. HAHAHA. i don’t know. the name just gives me a sort of really strong feeling that i like.  also since where they live, it’s always like... between spring-winter, those are the out-of-season months, don’t you think?
If your WIP had a theme song, what would it be? i’ve answered this here !  go check it out!
How has your MC developed, not within the plot, but since you first created them? well, i never thought that shou would be this absurd a person. or this dramatic. he was supposed to be a lil spooky yknow, kinda weird but also creepy. now he’s just weird.
Your MC faces certain death.  What are their last words? i think for shou it might be “i’m sorry”, but to what exactly, i’m not sure even he knows.
thank you for the tags!!! i’ll be tagging a few more new followers, and yall can either use the same questions / pick and choose what you want to answer! @lexaawrites @francestroublr @rebelwritingwild @ruthewriter

I've nearly finished Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin and here are some thoughts.
This is definitely intended to be a Final Fantasy Soulslike. I don't know whether the final product counts as one, since you don't leave behind exp when you die and you don't see phantoms of other players. However, both of these mechanics are written into the story and treated as though they are in the game. I feel like this game probably went through a ton of revisions mid-to-late-development, and they sorta half-kept the bones of everything they ended up changing anyway. That's why the game starts with like five very quick incomplete entirely separate opening cutscenes. That's why there's no hub town but they have a list in the main menu of all the dialogue NPCs would say in the hub town at each point in the story if there were one. That's why the title is like three different titles smushed together.
The gameplay is mostly very good and the story is mostly very bad. The idea of Final Fantasy 1 recreated as Dark Souls is honestly brilliant. FF1 is an old enough game that the story's vague by design, but its twists are still legitimately good and it has really cool super varied locations. Using the style of the new most popular JRPG to tell the story of the Ur-JRPG is inspired. But...Nomura made this game. So there's a lot of character banter and all of it is stilted and unnatural; there's a ton of really interesting lore that's delivered in the least interesting ways possible; and most glaringly, Nomura had created an alternate history and mythology for the FF1 world already in the Dissidia games, and clearly he thinks that alternate version of the FF1 world is actually the world of FF1.
This means that what we got is a dungeon crawler that follows some of the beats of FF1 but substitutes each dungeon for a dungeon from a different FF game. Instead of going to a port town to get a ship from a pirate, you go to the sea cave pirate dungeon from FF14. Instead of Mt. Gulg, you go to the volcano dungeon from the first four minutes of FF8. There's one dungeon for each main FF title, which means there are 15 dungeons and the game has to skip a ton of FF1 beats to make that work. I am the exclusive perfect audience for this approach, as I've played FF1 enough times that I remember each of the locations and story beats they're playing off of, I've played all the other titles so I can recognize the dungeons they're recreating, and I legitimately like and appreciate Dissidia's lore so I can translate the otherwise entirely opaque lore explanations for why these locations are here and why the characters are visiting them at all.
Despite this, I'm mostly mad that they did it this way. Very few of the dungeon choices are exciting. I hate FF8 and I was still mad that they chose that fucking volcano for it. I was similarly pissed that all FFX got was the snowy mountain. I've seen 14 of the 15 dungeons, so far, and of them I was excited to see 6 of them? And if you're choosing a location that doesn't clearly represent the game it's supposed to be from, the only nostalgia left would be the music, but only about half the dungeons bother to include uninspired reorchestrations of the music from the original games at all. The only reorchestrations in the game I can say are good are the ones from 1 and the one from 9, and 9's is still not nearly as good as the original song it's calling back to.
I'm not sure this would bother me quite as much as it does if FF14 wasn't so fucking good at calling back to previous games in both overt and subtle ways. Three of the locations from past games are actually also recreated in FF14, but 14's recreations blow this game's out of the water in terms of accuracy, music, incorporation into the narrative, and just plain nostalgia. And like....I know it's not fair to compare this to literally one of the best games I've ever played but like.....they drew this comparison themselves when they recreated a 14 dungeon. It's unavoidable.
The gameplay of Stranger of Paradise is mostly excellent. It's a hack and slash built around being punishing and making you retry encounters a lot until you've learned them, and it mostly succeeds at that. The job system is incredibly deep and complex. There's 8 weapons types and also magic and each of them feels unique and fun. There's 27 jobs that each have their own fun gameplay gimmick. There's a surprisingly deep blocking system that has the player determining when to block, when to magic guard, and when to evade, and reacting with the right block rewards you with stuff like parry opportunities or even Blue Magic. It feels great, and the dungeon designs get really good a little over halfway through the game (before that they're unfortunately mostly pretty hallways). I've had a ton of fun unlocking and leveling all the jobs, learning fights, and stuff, and there's an option to temporarily nuke the difficulty if a boss is just too hard.
Which is good because unfortunately this game isn't well-made enough for some of the encounter designs they implement. You can't hit the more mobile enemy types at all if you aren't locked onto them, but locking onto mobile enemies can mess with the camera a ton, and forces you to give up camera control entirely. During the biggest bosses, for some reason, the game will also just take control of the camera away from you, regardless of whether you're locked on or not, and then the camera will pan over to look at random walls. It's uncommon enough that it's not a dealbreaker, but there were a few enemy encounters that took me a good twenty tries simply because I had to choose between being able to hit enemies and being able to see them.
As a game, Stranger of Paradise is very good. It's a lot of fun, very deep, with some real weighty gameplay systems to sink your teeth into. The game....probably shouldn't have a story. I've been thinking while playing through this that it's kind of the perfect genre for Nomura. It's got rpg elements, locations that rely more on vibes than storytelling, and no need for a story. He can make ten sequels to this and I'd probably play them all and the rest of Square's catalogue would probably be better off for his reduced presence. But I also keep thinking about what this game could have been, either as a dungeon-crawler through previous FF locations or as a soulslike reimagining of FF1, and both of those are really cool games that Nomura has ruined here. It's a weird trade-off. Fun game, though.

My Favorite FFX and FFX-2 Piano Collections Songs to Play
During the pandemic, I picked the piano back up, which I had not seriously touched since I went to college and left my parents’ home.  I had learned several pieces off of the FFX Piano Collections back then, but never had the discipline to learn the more difficult (and more beautiful) pieces.
Well, now I know almost all of them and let me tell you my opinions!
The Absolute Best
Akagi Party.  Omg my favorite.  I just love the jazzy middle section, so many twists and turns, which nevertheless allows creative fingering to make it achievable for an intermediate player like me.  I struggled so hard on almost every measure of this, but once I got it, I couldn’t stop playing it.  It’s just SO FUN.  Not a boring measure in sight.  I also like to go HAM on the bombastic ending passage, fff, loud as can be.  This is the best of FFX-2 PC.
Guadosalam.  After I’ve played a few X-2 pieces, the FFX pieces all sound kind of simple and empty, boring even.  That is not the case with Guadosalam.  This piano arrangement transforms the original, it’s almost a new song.  There are 3 sections of this song, each so different from each other that it’s hard to say they’re variations, but some distant almost-melody threads them together.  I cannot put my finger on it.  That’s why I return to this one out of all the FFX pieces, for its mystery.
The Overlooked
Creature Create.  I wasn’t excited to learn this because I wasn’t so hot on the original, and I had no nostalgic feelings urging me on because I never played FFX-2 International Last Mission as a kid.  But, this has become one of my favorite challenges, and now I LOVE it.  Avant-garde, jazzy as fuck, doesn’t try to dumb itself down for you, you have to rise to meet it.  And it’s a heck of a difficult piece.  The time signature is weird, the off-beats are emphasized, and it’s a stamina trial for sure.  Still, this one is inspired. Maybe only those attempting to play it can appreciate that.
The Important Ones
Eternity-Memory of Light and Waves.  Story time. I started learning this piece when I was sixteen.  Never got past page 3 (of 8).  Skip some 15+ years later, and I’ve finally mastered it.  This is the song I wanted to just grind out when I picked back up with piano.  Out of spite?  Out of a desire to prove to myself that I can do it?  Well, it’s a gorgeous song and deserves its place in the hearts of many FFX-2 fans.  I’m so glad I came back to put this one down, finish this unfinished business, to just send it.
To Zanarkand (original, not PC version).  I still play, to this day, an arrangement of this song made for me by my childhood piano teacher.  Faithful.  Steadfast.  Always there for me.  Ready to my fingertips as the first thing I’ll play and the last thing I’ll forget.  Bringing back to me that campfire, that sunset, and little me in front of my PS2.  Listen to my story...
The Absolute Best - Part Two
Epilogue - Reunion.  This one is so good it almost beats Akagi Party.  But no, nothing can beat Akagi Party, it’s just head and shoulders above anything else.  But on any other Piano Collections, Epilogue would prevail.  I am in love with the shimmery opening on the Besaid theme, made majestic via multiple cresting arpeggios, transmuting through several keys to settle on a comfy G, and then climaxing in thundering chords one after the other... and a final tremolo to shimmer yourself out.
Song of Prayer.  Another one of those inspired arrangements that would have been a best-of-the-album but for the ambiance and atmosphere of Guadosalam.  Maybe because it’s such a sentimental song, associated so strongly with the game as a whole, that I feel so respectful and reverent towards this one.  But really, I think it’s the transformation of a simple melody into this, an orchestral and multi-vocal, multi-layered thing, that puts it up there.
